2023 has been an exciting year at Walt Disney World, with the opening of TRON: Lightcycle/Run as well as the expected completion of the long-awaited re-imagining of EPCOT with the opening of Dreamer's Point, CommuniCore Plaza, and an all-new nighttime show.

However, it looks like 2024 is going to be even bigger at the resort, with some very exciting new attractions getting ready to make their debut! As always, timelines are subject to change, but as of right now, these are all of the new additions that Disney fans should be able to check out in 2024:

1: Tiana's Bayou Adventure

theme park tourist destination

Park: Magic Kingdom

Opening Date: Late 2024

Work is progressing quickly on Tiana's Bayou Adventure, which is set to open sometime late next year. This attraction will be a follow-up to the events of the Princess and the Frog movie, acting like a sequel of sorts, and will find Tiana preparing to host a large party for Mardi Gras but missing a key ingredient. To find it, guests will join Tiana on an adventure deep into the bayou, meeting new and familiar faces along the way as they search for this important ingredient and rush to make it to the party.

During the ride, guests can expect to hear familiar tunes from the film as well as voiceovers from the original voice actors from the film, including film including Bruno Campos (Naveen), Michael Leon Wooley (Louis), and Jennifer Lewis (Mama Odie) and, of course, Anika Noni Rose who voiced Princess Tiana, who will all be returning to record new dialogue for the ride.

2. County Bears Musical Jamboree

theme park tourist destination

Park : Magic Kingdom

Expected opening range:  Mid-2024

Magic Kingdom opening day attraction Country Bear Jamboree is set to be reimagined as the "County Bears Musical Jamboree" next year.  This updated attraction will have a completely new story and soundtrack, with the Country Bears characters now set to reinterpret songs from classic Disney movies in different genres of country music during the show.

Disney has yet to debut an official tracklist, but a preview showed various musicians working on a country version of the "Bare Necessities" song from The Jungle Book, which will presumably be a part of the show. No opening target was given, but considering Disney has already started work on this project, we'd guess that a mid-2024 opening, perhaps just in time for summer, would be likely.

3. Star Tours Ahsoka Update

theme park tourist destination

Park : Disney's Hollywood Studios

Expected opening range : Mid-2024

Another project that doesn't have a specific timeline, but will likely be ready for summer is a new Star Tours update. Back in 2023, Disney announced during Star Wars Celebration that there would be "more stories and characters" and "all new adventures" coming to Star Tours in 2024. And now we know at least one of those new stories and characters will be Ahsoka, as seen in the new Disney+ series bearing the same name.

No additional information has been made available about what other new destinations will be a part of this new update, but considering how popular baby Grogu is we'd be shocked if the Mandalorian character doesn't at least make an appearance.

4. Fort Wilderness DVC Cabins

theme park tourist destination

Expected opening range: Late 2024

The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort are currently being reimagined as the next Disney Vacation Club property as part of the overall refreshment of Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. More than 350 new cabins are being constructed to replace the existing cabins nestled across 750 acres. Each stand-alone cabin offers spacious accommodations, sleeping up to six adults, and features a bedroom, bathroom, living room, full kitchen, and private patio.

An expert's guide to Orlando, Florida – beyond the theme parks

Tamara Gane

theme park tourist destination

From glistening beaches to space exploration past and present, Orlando has tons for you to see © Shutterstock

There's a reason 75 million people visit Orlando annually, and it isn't just the mouse. Don't get us wrong. Disney World is incredible and deserves a place on any theme park lover’s bucket list, but Orlando is so much more than its theme parks. It’s an ever-evolving city with vibrant parks, public art and award-winning restaurants. And that’s before you get to amazing day trips to the Kennedy Space Center or New Smyrna Beach .

I have family near Orlando and I’ve visited dozens of times through the years, usually for a week at a time. I’ve come to love this special place. Whether it’s your first trip to Orlando or you’re looking for something to do outside the theme parks, our expert guide to Orlando will help you make the most of your trip.

When should I go to Orlando?

There’s no wrong time to visit Orlando , but here are a few facts to inform your decision. First, no matter the time of year, holidays are crowded and expensive (this includes the days framing the actual holiday). There’s also the rainy season from May to October. Luckily, in a place as lovely as Florida, the rainfall is intense but mercifully brief.

Hurricane season is from June through November. In recent years, weather systems like Hurricane Ian have caused theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios to close for multiple days. If you’re visiting Orlando during hurricane season, it’s best to book flexible airfare, lodging, rental car reservations, etc.

The high tourist season in Orlando is from March to April and June to August. Kids are typically out of school for spring and summer breaks, so the big attractions like theme parks are often crowded. Humidity is high, and temperatures are often in the 90s.

The shoulder season in Orlando is in May and September through November. In May, temperatures reach the mid to high 80s, and after the sweltering summer, they drop to the upper 70s in November. During the shoulder season, you’ll usually find better deals on lodging.

December is usually the low season (excluding Christmas through early January when the kids are on holiday break). The temperatures are cooler but exceedingly pleasant, with averages in the middle 70s. This is the time of year when you’ll usually get the best pricing as long you avoid school breaks and holidays.

A boy stands on a wet expanse of sand at New Smyrna Beach, near Orlando, Florida

How many days do you need to see Orlando?

Although you can easily spend longer and not regret it, the average visitor to Orlando spends 5-7 nights. A stay of this length ensures you’ll have time to visit the theme parks (if that’s on your itinerary), plus explore downtown Orlando and some Florida beaches.

Is it easy to get around in Orlando?

Most long-distance travelers fly into Orlando International Airport. If you’re staying at a Disney area hotel and don’t plan on spending much time outside the resort, you might find it cheaper to take the Mears Connect shuttle over an Uber or rental car, although this largely depends on your group size. The shuttle operates 24/7.

If you’re a Florida local, the recently debuted Brightline offers fast train service connecting Orlando to cities like Palm Beach , Fort Lauderdale and Miami . Alternatively, the Sun Rail offers train service with stops in Poinciana (about half an hour from Disney World), downtown Orlando, Kissimmee and DeBary.

Downtown Orlando has an excellent public transportation system. LYMMO provides free Bus Rapid Transit service seven days a week to major downtown destinations like Lake Eola Park or the Bob Carr Theater . The Lymmo does not provide service to the airport or theme parks. Or, enjoy the beautiful Florida weather and utilize Orlando’s bike and scooter share program .

What are the top things to do in Orlando?

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Orlando has theme parks. Walt Disney World , Universal Studios , Legoland , etc, are all in the area. If these attractions are the reason for your visit, that’s wonderful. However, there are a lot of things to do in Orlando outside the theme parks.

Swans swim on glassy water at Lake Eola Park, with Orlando's skyline in the background

Embrace downtown Orlando

Don’t make the mistake of skipping downtown Orlando on your visit to the Sunshine State. Lake Eola Park is the heart of the city, with a paved, wheelchair-accessible walking trail circling the lake. Colorful gardens blossom against the backdrop of the Orlando skyline while swan boats (and real swans) swim in the water. A wheelchair lift was recently installed to make it easier for people with disabilities to enter the ADA-accessible swan boats. If you’re at Lake Eloa on a Sunday, check out the Orlando Farmer’s Market, where local vendors showcase seasonal produce, arts and crafts, plants and even homemade dog treats.

A whopping 48 Orlando restaurants were honored by the Michelin Guide in 2024, so be sure to arrive hungry. For a bucket list dining experience, the intimate Natsu Omakase has just two seatings per night and flies most of its seafood in from Japan. For a casual meal, it’s hard to beat Super Rico , with Columbian dishes like Churrasco or fried green plantains topped with steak, chicken and mushrooms.

While you’re walking around downtown, keep your eye open for public art. Orlando boasts over 900 paintings, sculptures, tapestries and mixed media displayed in its city hall, neighborhood centers, public buildings and parks.

Visit the Harry P. Leu Gardens

The Harry P. Leu Gardens is a 50-acre plant-life paradise. Since this is Florida, there is always something in bloom, and each trip to the gardens is different than the last. Throughout the year, roses, hibiscus, bananas, tree orchids and citrus trees fill the grounds with perfume and color. This is also home to the Historic Leu House Museum, which was originally built in 1888. Today, the mansion has been restored to offer visitors a glimpse back at the past.

Take in a Performance at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has been recognized as one of the world's most acoustically sound arts venues. The building takes up two city blocks, offering multiple performance spaces, a school of the arts, event rooms and an outdoor plaza with a welcoming lawn. An ever-changing calendar of performances includes family-friendly programming, Broadway touring productions and local theater groups.

Geek out at Kennedy Space Center

Orlando is only 50 miles from the Kennedy Space Center , and it’s worth a side trip. You can easily spend the entire day there, so don’t short yourself on time. Attractions include encounters with real astronauts, hands-on activities like astronaut training simulators, and virtual reality experiences. Kids love it, and so do adults.

Manatees float in clear water at Blue Spring State Park outside of Orlando, Florida

Explore New Smyrna Beach

Drive an hour to New Smyrna Beach, where you’ll find 17 miles of sugar sand beaches, some of Florida’s best surfing waves, and a cute, walk-around-able downtown brimming with boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. Nearby Blue Springs State Park is a designated manatee refuge with hundreds of manatees from mid-November through mid-March that visitors can see via a wheelchair-accessible path and viewing platform.

My favorite thing to do in Orlando

My favorite thing to do in Orlando might seem a little cheesy if you’ve never been inside, but I always recommend Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition . Yes, there are Titanic museums elsewhere, but that doesn’t make this one any less worthwhile since each exhibition holds different artifacts. This one has more than 300 artifacts recovered from the wreckage and 500 personal items from passengers. Costumed actors wander through full-scale room recreations of the Titanic’s interior, pulling you into an eerie, immersive experience. A regular roster of programs includes dinner galas, formal teas and guide tours with rotating themes.

How much money do I need for Orlando?

  • Basic room for two: $100 a night (and up)
  • Basic Airbnb for two: $100 a night (and up)
  • Ticket for Mear Connect: $32.00 roundtrip for ages 10 and up, $26.00 roundtrip for ages 3-9 years old, children under 3 are free
  • LYMMO Bus Rapid Transit service in downtown Orlando: Free
  • Theme park ticket: varies, but you usually expect to spend at least $120 per person per day
  • Cup of coffee: $3.00
  • Price for a sandwich: $8.00
  • Dinner for two: $60 (and up)
  • Cocktail in downtown Orlando: $14 (and up)

Theme park capital: This city is the largest US travel and tourism destination

theme park tourist destination

Home to Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando and many other attractions, the city of Orlando, Florida, was named the largest U.S. travel and tourism city destination for 2022 by the World Travel & Tourism Council.

The city earned over $31 billion last year from tourism, representing 20% of the city's total gross domestic product, the Cities Economic Impact Report by the WTTC said. The destination made a comeback from the pandemic, having earned more than 2019's economic contribution by $2.7 billion.

Following Orlando was Las Vegas, with a direct GDP contribution of $23 billion. Other major U.S. cities like Miami and New York City also surpassed 2019 level contributions, the report said, proving that these cities "remain iconic destinations."

"It was a fightback year for cities across the country in 2022. Destinations like Orlando, Miami, Chicago and Las Vegas are back stronger than ever before thanks to the relaxation of pandemic restrictions and a strong rebound of consumer confidence,” said WTTC President and CEO Julia Simpson in a statement.

As of November 2022, Florida saw an increase in visitors – welcoming 104.5 million travelers – more than it saw in 2019.

Orlando was also the only major city destination to not only have strong spending by domestic travelers but international travelers as well. In 2022, its international visitor spending surpassed its 2019 numbers by almost 20%.

"Other popular holiday destinations like San Francisco, Honolulu and Washington, D.C., are following suit with growing sector GDP contributions that are well on their way to recovering from peak pandemic lows," Simpson added.

To come up with the biggest tourist destinations for the Cities Economic Impact Report, researchers from Oxford Economics analyzed key travel and tourism metrics, such as contribution to GDP, traveler spending and employment, for 82 cities across the world. The report was sponsored by Visa.

18 hottest new theme park attractions for 2021

Terry Ward

Summer is on its way and, for many, that means theme park vacations with the family — especially for anyone looking to make up for amusement park trips that didn't come to fruition in 2020.

Much has been postponed and delayed by the pandemic, but 2021 is likely to see more openings than 2020 ushered in — even if many opening dates still remain vague.

Florida's theme parks, for example, rebounded this spring to levels that often pushed capacity limits.

In California, strict COVID-19 restrictions kept Disneyland Resort in Anaheim closed for a whopping (and no doubt walloping) 13 months. Under California's new health and safety guidelines, however, Disneyland is now set to reopen this week on April 30.

Universal Studios Hollywood reopened on April 16, and Knott's Berry Farm will open its doors to season passholders on May 6 and to the general public on May 21.

Legoland California reopened on April 15 and, after missing its slated 2020 opening, Legoland New York is set to have its grand reveal in 2021, although there's still no news on the official date for that.

While some openings are still in limbo, there are a few new roller coasters and rides that have already opened in 2021 — or are coming soon — to put on your radar for theme park fun this summer and fall.

Walt Disney World Resort

Remy's ratatouille adventure.

theme park tourist destination

Originally slated to open in 2020, Walt Disney World finally announced Oct. 1, 2021, as the official opening date for this favorite trackless ride from Disneyland Paris that's debuting in Orlando.

Timed to launch with Walt Disney World Resort's 50th anniversary , Chef Remy's attraction shrinks you to his size (there's no height requirement, so this is a great family ride) for a rollicking adventure through Gusteau's Parisian restaurant from the Pixar hit "Ratatouille." It all unfolds within the France Pavilion at Epcot, which is being expanded to accommodate the new ride.

La Crêperie de Paris

If you've been wondering if you can get a good crêpe around here, the answer will be oui in Orlando, at least, when La Crêperie de Paris opens Oct. 1 with both table and quick service inside the expanded France Pavilion. Fans of the quintessential French snack who've missed Europe during the pandemic will appreciate the presence of buckwheat galettes and French hard ciders (the typical accouterment to crêpes, when in France) on the menu.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

theme park tourist destination

Two-night immersive adventures aboard the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser — essentially a Star Wars-themed hotel — are still said to be coming soon to Hollywood Studios in 2021, with no specific date announced for opening day. Stays at this new hotel, which surely won't come cheap, will include a trip to the bridge of the Halcyon and lightsaber training.

Drawn to Life by Cirque de Soleil

The debut date for this new Cirque du Soleil spectacular at Disney Springs that's being called "a love letter to the art of Disney animation" remains unknown, but is still rumored to be coming in 2021. Cirque du Soleil saw massive layoffs in 2020 in Orlando, so we're keeping our fingers crossed for a strong comeback to the stage.

Disney's Blizzard Beach Water Park

theme park tourist destination

After being closed for most of 2020 due to the pandemic, Disney's Blizzard Beach Water Park reopened on March 7 to welcome spring break-goers to landlocked Orlando in true liquid fun fashion. Highlights include Cross Country Creek which, at 3,000 feet long, is one of the longest lazy rivers in the country.

Dates still haven't been confirmed for 2021 when it comes to when, or if, this new Epcot restaurant nestled between Mission: Space and Test Track might open. However, we're looking forward to peeping views of the Earth's curvature and the International Space Station while dining on "modern American cuisine," whatever that might entail. Disney has so far announced that the drinks selection will include "1,000 bottles of the world's finest wines and a wide selection of craft beer," which does sound otherworldly.

Disneyland Resort

Avengers campus.

theme park tourist destination

Just having Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park finally set to reopen April 30 after a crushingly long stretch of pandemic closure is in and of itself is one of the biggest pieces of park news to report. So, it's extra exciting for West Coast theme park lovers that Disney California Adventure Park is opening a brand-new superhero-themed land, the Avengers Campus , on June 4.

Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure is the ride everyone is talking about — an interactive screen ride open to all heights and ages, with good family fun all but guaranteed.

Note that park reservations at Disneyland are a new requirement in 2021. Here are a few more ways Disneyland will be different when it reopens .

Universal Orlando

Jurassic world velocicoaster.

theme park tourist destination

Universal is calling this new roller coaster, opening June 10 at the Islands of Adventure theme park, the "apex predator" of roller coasters. And if hurtling along at 70 miles per hour with velociraptors as your wingmen sounds like you're brand of fun, you won't want to miss what will take the lead as Florida's fastest and tallest launch coaster.

Surrounded by detailed rock work and lush landscaping that begets dinosaurs, Jurassic World VelociCoaster promises to make stomachs lurch when it propels riders 155 feet up into the air and then dives into an immediate 80-degree drop — the coaster's signature "top hat" move that has people who yearn for these kinds of thrills counting the days till early June.

Universal Studios Hollywood

Secret life of pets: off the leash.

A crew of 64 animal robot figurines is your supporting cast in this heartwarming new family ride at Universal Studios Hollywood that debuted when the park reopened on April 16.

Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash takes riders on an old-school theme park journey as pets inspired by the movie franchise cavort all around you, luring you into their world of fancy New York City apartments and back-alley antics. At one point, motion-tracking technology even turns the rider, ever so briefly, into a pup for more silliness and smiles all around.

SeaWorld Orlando

Ice breaker.

There's still no update from SeaWorld for when, exactly, in 2021 this new Arctic-themed coaster will open near to the park's Wild Arctic attraction and blast us all with its presence.

Set to be SeaWorld Orlando's first launch-style coaster, Ice Breaker will have both backward and forward launches and flip riders' stomachs with a reverse launch into what's being called the "steepest beyond vertical drop" in Florida, from 93 feet high and a white-knuckle 100-degree angle.

Altitude Burgers

With open-air dining next to Wild Arctic and Glacier Bar, this new build-your-own burger bar (with a chicken sandwich and limited pizza options, too) opened in March as a replacement for Mango Joe's.

SeaWorld San Diego

Hold on to your hats (and sunglasses). Delayed from its originally planned opening for 2020 because of you-know-what, SeaWorld San Diego's all-new dive coaster, Emperor, is still bookmarked for a 2021 opening, according to the park website. With top speeds of 60 miles per hour and a top drop of 150 feet, Emperor's superlative will be the "tallest and fastest floorless dive coaster in the state" (try saying that five times in rapid procession) when it finally debuts.

Fun fact: SeaWorld San Diego is the only place in North America to see the emperor penguin.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Busch Gardens Tampa has no shortage of extreme roller coasters yet continues to one-up itself on a regular basis. Originally scheduled to open in 2020 -- and with no specific date announced beyond a vague "2021," much to the annoyance of fans of the park on Twitter -- the next one-upper coaster contender will be Iron Gwazi.

With three inversions, top speeds of 76 miles per hour and a maximum height of more than 200 feet, it's set to be the fastest and steepest hybrid coaster in the world. The ultimate bragging right on this ride will be a 91-degree drop from 206 feet.

Legoland Florida

Brickbeard's watersports stunt show.

New in February, Legoland Florida's newest stunt show on Lake Eloise, at the heart of the park, features a brand-new female Lego pirate character and an all-new flyboard act designed to thrill. You can count on seeing classic on-water stunts in the show, too, including ski pyramids, barefoot skiing, jump acts and daredevil wakeboarding.

Here's everything you need to know about staying at Pirate Island Hotel at Legoland Florida .

Legoland New York

theme park tourist destination

There's still no opening date on the books for New York's first Legoland outpost , but the largest Legoland to date is confirmed as opening this summer in Goshen in New York's Hudson Valley. The park was originally slated to open last summer but was delayed due to the pandemic.

Also opening in 2021, presumably with the park, Legoland Hotel will offer guests daily complimentary breakfast, kids entertainment, a heated pool and — what parent won't love this? — a separate kids' sleeping area in all 250 of its rooms.

Knott's Berry Farm

theme park tourist destination

Knott's Bear-y Tales: Return to the Fair

When Knott's Berry Farm finally reopens on May 6, it will come with the debut of this brand-new interactive 4D dark ride. Riders climb aboard vehicles equipped with jelly blasters (to recover stolen pies, of course) for an adventure through reimagined show scenes from the park's original dark ride. Wily pie-stealing coyotes abound as you try to win the blue ribbon for boysenberry pies at the country fair.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Dare devil dive flying machines.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas' newest ride debuted in March in the form of a steampunk-themed thriller called Dare Devil Dive Flying Machines. Set within the themed Crackaxle Canyon area of the park, the four-seat ride plays out like an aerial dogfight with banks, loops and dives that thrill.

Six Flags Great Adventure

Jersey devil.

What's a new roller coaster without a superlative to its name? When it launches this summer (exact date still unannounced) at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, the park's Jersey Devil coaster will break three records at once as the tallest, fastest and longest single-rail roller coaster in the world. Among the hit list of thrills riders will experience on the coaster's 13-story-high track: a zero-gravity roll and 180-degree stall.

Bottom line

This summer theme parks will be abuzz with activity as more Americans are vaccinated and willing to travel to more crowded locations. Families that may have gone camping at a national park , booked a vacation rental home or taken a road trip last summer may now be planning their theme park return.

Just remember that things will look and feel a bit different with ongoing COVID-19 safety protocols — including physical distancing and mask-wearing — in place. But if your family is ready to try some new coasters and attractions, this summer promises tons of fun and thrills.

What Type of Tourism Is a Theme Park?

By Michael Ferguson

Theme parks have become a popular choice for families and individuals looking for a fun day out or a vacation destination. But what type of tourism is a theme park? In this article, we will explore the different aspects of theme park tourism and what makes it unique.

Defining Theme Park Tourism

Theme park tourism is a specific type of tourism that revolves around visiting amusement parks that offer various rides, shows, and attractions. These parks are usually designed with a central theme in mind, such as Disney’s Magic Kingdom or Universal Studios’ Harry Potter World.

What Makes Theme Park Tourism Unique?

One of the most significant aspects of theme park tourism is its ability to cater to all ages and interests. From thrilling roller coasters to live shows and parades, there is something for everyone at a theme park. Additionally, theme parks are designed to provide visitors with an immersive experience that transports them into another world.

The Economic Impact of Theme Park Tourism

Theme parks can have a significant economic impact on the surrounding area. They can create jobs, generate revenue through ticket sales and merchandise, and attract visitors from all over the world. According to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), the global attractions industry generates $250 billion annually.

Types of Theme Parks

There are several types of theme parks catering to different interests:

  • Amusement Parks – These parks are focused on thrill rides such as roller coasters.
  • Water Parks – These parks feature water-based attractions like water slides and lazy rivers.
  • Cultural/Heritage Parks – These parks showcase different cultures or historical periods.
  • Animal Parks – These parks allow visitors to interact with animals up close.

The Future of Theme Park Tourism

As technology advances, theme parks are incorporating new technologies to enhance the visitor experience. For example, Disney has implemented a system called Magic Bands that allow visitors to access rides, make purchases, and more with a simple tap of their wristband.

The factors like high upfront investment costs are working as an entry barrier for new players to enter the market although the industry is anticipated to expand at a high rate. This along with the long time-consuming processes like construction, installation, and permit approvals are not working in the favor of the market; licensing of intellectual properties is also a main cost that the players have to incur. All these factors make the entry into market highly difficult, but overcoming these barriers does guarantee a substantial stream of revenue.

Support key to wooing theme park brands

To attract big-name theme park brands such as Disney, Thailand should offer intensive support, including investment incentives and infrastructure development, according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA).

Wuthichai Luangamornlert, board chairman of IAAPA, said investors prefer to develop their attractions in destinations that offer greater support.

In China, a rail transport system was completed one year before the opening of Shanghai Disneyland, with the project planned 15-20 years in advance.

The Hong Kong government reclaimed land dedicated for the development of Hong Kong Disneyland.

In some cases, projects were prepared with extra space for expansion, he said.

"Building an amusement park is not only about the visitors, but also thousands of employees, accommodation, roads and workplaces. The question is how will the government support it?" said Mr Wuthichai.

He said in the past there have been discussions about building a Thai Disneyland.

Mr Wuthichai said laws and regulations regarding investment in Thailand are outdated for the theme park industry, as they favour the industrial segment.

For example, it is difficult to calculate the tax rate involving simulator technology and equipment, as this kind of system does not align with the horsepower units described in the law.

Investing in this kind of business also requires more than 5-7 years to break even, but the corporate tax incentives only last for a short period of time.

He said the government should issue a new investment regulation dedicated to theme park investment.

Thailand has a strong tourism segment that could support the theme park industry, said Mr Wuthichai.

Without world-class theme parks, the country is also losing out on affluent Thai tourists who visit theme parks abroad instead, he said.

Mr Wuthichai said the government's plan for a casino and entertainment complex could provide more travel options for visitors to Thailand, but it needs clear rules and regulations.

Jakob Wahl, president and chief executive of IAAPA, said revenue growth among amusement parks globally has stabilised this year after surging in 2023 based on pent-up demand.

People want to go out and have fun, and are more willing to spend more for this kind of experience, he said.

Recent trends indicate theme parks are shifting to an immersive experience, with mixed-use programmes combining accommodation and experiences to encourage longer stays at parks, while adding festive events encourages tourists to visit more often, said Mr Wahl.

Many global attractions expanded in tandem with established brands, characters or intellectual property, such as France's Louvre Museum entering the Middle East market.

Over the next three years, the most new theme park investments will be in the Middle East, notably Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, he said.

In Asia, new theme park developments will be unveiled in China and Vietnam, said Mr Wahl.

Mr Wuthichai said there is no large-scale theme park development in Thailand, only minor expansions of existing projects, such as hotels or malls equipped with water parks.

IAAPA hosted its Asia trade show featuring more than 350 exhibitors at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center on May 27-30, showcasing new products and trends in the industry.

‘Home is in my heart’: Why Dolly Parton's businesses keep expanding in Pigeon Forge

theme park tourist destination

She built a career that made her a global icon, but it was Dolly Parton's dream to build something that would make her parents proud and honor all the people she grew up in the Great Smoky Mountains.

And she did exactly that with Dollywood. The theme park in Pigeon Forge she opened in the mid-1980s is now crucial to East Tennessee’s tourism , economy and culture.

“There's that old saying that you can never go home again. Well, whoever said that? I can’t ever get out of home. I mean, home is in my heart. These mountains, I’ve always cared (about them),” Parton told Knox News this weekend.

“I’m the only person that ever left the Smoky Mountains and took them with her,” she joked as only she could. “But seriously, I love these mountains. I'm so proud to be a Tennessee girl, and I'm proud to be a Smoky Mountain girl.”

Because there’s not a Dollywood party without Dolly, she was in Pigeon Forge on Sept. 9 to celebrate the theme park's big wins at the annual awards ceremony considered the Oscars of the amusement industry.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Dollywood is a huge part of her legacy, and it delights her to know that it continues to have a profound impact on East Tennessee, especially contributing to the growth of other businesses in the area.

“I'm just proud to have been part of the people that have provided jobs and watched it grow. And it's a good feeling to have been a part of that,” she said.

The ultimate Dollywood surprise

Dollywood guests jumped to their feet with cheers and excitement on Sept. 9 while attending the 25 th Golden Ticket Awards . Not only did Dollywood win the top prize as best park in the world, but the Queen of Country herself made a surprise appearance.

“Don’t you think I should be part of this,” Parton interrupted Dollywood President Eugene Naughton as he was about to accept the final award of the night.

“I’m just happy that we’re the number one park! I mean, that’s saying a lot,” she said to the audience.

It might be apt to call her the queen of amusement parks, too. Dollywood’s best park win ended the eight-year streak held by Europa-Park in Germany. The Pigeon Forge attraction was honored with a record five awards and Parton, along with her business partners Jack and Pete Herschend received the Industry Legends Golden Ticket Award.

“I couldn’t even believe it myself, but I just said, ‘Well, thank you, Lord,’” Parton told Knox News about the wins.

“It's great that people come from all over the world. And I've been all over the world and I encourage them to come to the Smokies, to come to Dollywood, and obviously they have,” she added.

A golden night for a golden lady

It was truly a golden night for the popular theme park, which earned recognition in 10 categories in total. In addition to best park, Dollywood also won top honors in the best guest experience, best kids’ area, best family coaster and best Christmas event categories.

And it earned notable recognition in the most beautiful park, best food, best new coaster, best wooden roller coaster and best new attraction installation categories.

The Golden Ticket Awards were held at the Showstreet Palace Theater in Dollywood. The Pigeon Forge amusement park last hosted the ceremony in 2012.

“Each time I enter the park, I am immersed in a sense of welcome,” Golden Ticket Awards spokesperson Tim Baldwin said in a news release. “The food, the music, the rides, the atmosphere - there is a heart to it.”

“Just as Dolly likes to treat people with kindness and love, Dollywood exudes a sense of happiness. It makes you want to come back,” Baldwin continued. “This is why Dollywood has grown exponentially from a regional destination to a national one — and beyond.”

What are the Oscars of the amusement industry?

The Golden Ticket Awards are presented by Amusement Today , the amusement park industry’s leading trade magazine.

The awards are voted on by hundreds of industry journalists, ride manufacturers and experienced and well-traveled amusement park fans from around the globe. The pool of voters changes every year, according to Amusement Today .

Dollywood’s newest and longest attraction, Big Bear Mountain , was a major factor in the park’s 2023 accolades. It won the inaugural best family coaster category and solidified the park’s best kids’ area win.

It also placed third in the best new coaster category and fifth in the best new attraction installation category.

The $25 million roller coaster opened earlier this year and is the largest investment for a single attraction in Dollywood history. It has a top speed of 48 mph, soars 66 feet to rise above the forest and has nearly 4,000 feet of track.

You won’t see Parton on Big Bear or any of the rides, though. “I might lose my hair,” she joked with Knox News. But she encourages families to enjoy the roller coaster.

“I'm just proud of Big Bear Mountain; that's been one of the bigger things that we put in. And that area for kids, in general, Wildwood Grove, that was one of our better moves.”

The Wildwood Grove section – which won its fourth consecutive Golden Ticket award – opened in 2019 and was a six-acre addition to the property to allow more space for visitors to explore without feeling crowded.

“We have spent a lot of effort the last several years focused on our guest and host experience. We want everyone who comes through our turnstiles to have an experience which provides them with happy memories for years to come,” Naughton said after the awards.

What’s next for Dollywood and Dolly Parton?

Memories can be made at two upcoming festivals at Dollywood. The Harvest Festival is Sept. 20-Oct. 30. It will be followed by Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Nov. 4- Jan. 6, which just won its 15 th Golden Ticket award for best Christmas event.

The grand opening for HeartSong Lodge , Dollywood’s second resort, is Nov. 3. The 302-room resort is inspired by Parton’s love for the Great Smoky Mountains and she’s excited for guests to stay at the grand lodge. Reservations are open now.

“It's more of a mountain atmosphere,” Parton explained. “It's set back in the woods and it’s just really like a mansion in the hills.”

The resort is part of Dollywood Parks & Resorts’ half a billion-dollar dream to expand over the next decade into a premiere year-round destination for family vacations.

And that’s not all. Parton’s first rock album, “Rockstar” will be released Nov. 17. It is her 49 th studio album and she recorded it in honor of her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
