Review: ‘Hotel California’ and more from Eagles at Wells Fargo Center

Three hours of the band's 1976 album, plus greatest hits, with Vince Gill taking the place of the late Glenn Frey.

The Eagles perform in the Hotel California 2022 Tour at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia on Monday, March 28, 2022.

E-A-G-L-E-S … Eagles!

No, not those Eagles. The Eagles that took flight at the sports complex in South Philadelphia on Monday night were the 1970s Southern California rock band Eagles — the group originally led by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. They are the only act in pop music history to count two of their albums on the list of the 10 best sellers of all time.

One of those is Hotel California , the 1976 release about decadence and burnout and the American dream coming to a dead end in the nation’s bicentennial year in cocaine-fueled life-in-the-fast-lane Los Angeles.

That’s the one with the 6 1/2-minute title song with “warm smell of colitas rising up in the air” and an epic guitar coda that’s been a de rigueur aspiration for countless cover bands for nearly a half century.

Not to mention the Henley-sung final line that should have served as a warning to the band and every other showbiz lifer pretending to step off the stage once and for all: “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”

Thus it was Hotel California that had brought Eagles back to life and found the band at an all-but-sold-out Wells Fargo Center on Monday. There they played the album in order in its entirety, followed by nearly two hours of greatest hits, including every cut on Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) , the one even-bigger selling Eagles album.

So at this late date — 42 years after they first called it quits — who are the Eagles?

At the Wells Fargo, the core group was drummer and singer Henley, guitarist Joe Walsh, and longtime bassist Timothy B. Schmit, plus Vince Gill, the country singer-guitarist who’s taken Frey’s position at stage right and is a most welcome addition.

Introduced by Henley as “one of America’s finest singer-songwriters,” Gill took his first star with honeyed tenor voice on “New Kid in Town.”

That was apt since, at 64, he’s approximately a decade younger than the other principals in the band. He sparkled vocally on that Hotel cut, as he did later in the evening on “Take It Easy” and “Take It To the Limit.” And when called upon, Gill showed what an underrated guitar player he is, as he did on the 1970 James Gang hit “Funk #49” in which he squared off with Walsh, who added silliness and slide guitar firepower throughout the evening.

In addition to Gill, the band on Monday was also joined by auxiliary players, including Steuart Smith, their longtime touring guitarist who replaced Don Felder in 2001, and who teamed with Walsh on the aforementioned Hotel California coda.

On select songs, the band was joined by even more musicians. For Hotel’s “Wasted Time” and its instrumental reprise, three dozen string players, whom Henley called “the Northeast Corridor Orchestra,” appeared.

(If you added up all the masks on the back of the stage, it might have totaled more than those worn by all audience members.)

And on Hotel’s elegiac “The Last Resort,” the band and orchestra members were joined by the yellow-robed, 21-member University of the Arts Chorus, which helped give the album closer its aimed-for air of broken dream significance.

For a band with so many millions of fans whose songs’ chief characteristic is their pleasantness, Eagles have never had a shortage of detractors. For some it’s the music’s peaceful, easy, anodyne quality.

For me, it’s that combined with the casual misogyny that courses through their catalog, particularly the greatest-hits portion. So many witchy women who can’t hide their “Lyin’ Eyes,” and wounded male narrators who know all too well “what a woman will do to your soul.”

If there are seven women on the mind of an Eagle — as in “Take It Easy,” written by Frey and Jackson Browne — he counts himself lucky if one wants to be his friend.

Of course, all of those songs are expertly crafted and forever memorable, and for rock fans of a certain age, likely to be burned in your brain, even if you haven’t played an Eagles album in decades.

On Monday, they were performed with verve and precision in a first-class production that only occasionally dragged. Harmonies were sharp and highlights abounded, whether it was a stomping “Heartache Tonight,” with Gill taking the lead, or Walsh’s discordant “Rocky Mountain Way,” or Schmit’s delicate “I Can’t Tell You Why,” a yacht rock masterpiece unlike any of the band’s other signature songs.

Early in the evening, Henley, whose always slightly raspy vocals were strong and expressive all night long, said that the band hoped to bring the audience “a three-hour vacation from all the chaos and discord going on out there.” By those standards, even Eagles haters would have to admit the Hotel California tour succeeded.

As on past tours, the core of Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh are joined by upper-register maestro Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, son of the late Eagles legend Glenn Frey. The additional four musicians backing the Eagles augment an already pristine sound for this two-hour hits parade.

Who is Currently Performing with The Eagles? An In-Depth Guide to the Legendary Band’s Current Lineup

Who is Currently Performing with The Eagles

The Eagles are undeniably one of the most iconic and best-selling bands in rock n‘ roll history. Since forming in Los Angeles in 1971, the band has crafted an extensive catalogue of timeless hits and created a legacy that cemented their status as musical legends. While the Eagles disbanded in 1980, they reunited in 1994 for the wildly successful Hell Freezes Over tour and have been actively touring and recording ever since.

However, in recent years the band suffered the tragic loss of two integral founding members – guitarist Glenn Frey passed away in 2016 and guitarist Bernie Leadon passed in 2021. Despite this, the surviving original members and talented new additions are determined to keep the Eagles‘ spirit alive by continuing to perform their catalog of classics to appreciative audiences around the world.

Let‘s take an in-depth look at the stellar cast of musicians currently flying the Eagles banner and keeping their musical legacy soaring.

Founding Members Still Anchor the Band

Founding Members Still Anchor the Band

The two remaining original continuous members providing a strong foundation in the current Eagles lineup are drummer and vocalist Don Henley and guitarist and vocalist Joe Walsh .

Henley, along with Glenn Frey, founded the band back in 1971 and for many fans is the distinctive voice that defines the Eagles sound. In addition to his immaculate drumming, Henley sang lead on hits like “One of These Nights”, “The Long Run” and “The Boys of Summer”. Walsh first joined the band in 1975 in time for their career-defining Hotel California album. His fierce guitar playing is all over Eagles classics like “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Pretty Maids All in a Row”.

Both Henley and Walsh also cultivated massively successful solo careers over the years in addition to their contributions as Eagles. However, they remain dedicated to the band that made them global superstars. According to Ultimate Classic Rock critic Dave Lifton, Henley and Walsh provide “both the musical foundation and institutional knowledge that helps the rest of this lineup excel.”

Vince Gill Adds New Dimensions to the Band

Vince Gill Adds New Dimensions to the Band

After Glenn Frey‘s tragic and unexpected passing in 2016, the band recruited acclaimed country musician Vince Gill to come in and try to fill the large void left by one of their primary vocalists and songwriters. While certainly a daunting task, Gill has excelled beyond expectations by bringing his own flair and style to the band‘s catalogue of hits.

In addition to being a highly skilled guitarist with his own distinctive tone, Gill is known for his pure, smooth tenor voice that melds perfectly with harmonic-rich Eagles songs. His country music pedigree combined with rock sensibilities have added exciting new facets to the band.

According to Don Henley, Gill has been “a perfect fit musically and personally” and his addition to the band has reinvigorated their live performances. Fans who were initially skeptical have fully embraced Gill‘s energy and vocal talents.

Deacon Frey Joins to Honor His Father

Deacon Frey Joins to Honor His Father

In 2017, Glenn Frey‘s son Deacon Frey also officially joined the Eagles lineup for live shows. Deacon had previously toured with the band alongside his father and was determined to help continue his dad‘s musical legacy. Still in his 20s, Deacon contributes his talents on vocals, guitar, piano, and mandolin during concerts and has been enthusiastically welcomed into the Eagles family.

According to Don Henley, “Deacon‘s energy and passion for this music is inspiring. The band loves him, and so do the fans.” Having Deacon join to take over his father‘s vocals adds even more emotion and heart to the band‘s performances. Deacon has more than lived up to his father‘s legacy, helping the Eagles soar to new heights.

Timothy B. Schmit Anchors Them on Bass since the 70s

Timothy B. Schmit Anchors

While not an original founding member, bassist and vocalist Timothy B. Schmit has been with the band since 1979 after replacing original bassist Randy Meisner. Schmit‘s crystal clear tenor voice and high harmonies have become a staple of the Eagles‘ trademark sound.

Schmit sang lead vocals on hit singles like “I Can‘t Tell You Why” and has been providing the steady rhythmic foundation on bass throughout the band‘s live concerts and studio recordings for over 40 years now. His musical chemistry with Henley, Walsh, Gill, and Deacon Frey is seamless and helps recreate that classic Eagles magic fans have loved for decades.

Key Stats on the Legendary Eagles:

  • 6 Grammy Awards Won
  • 150+ million albums sold worldwide
  • 5 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart
  • 240+ weeks total on the Billboard 200 album charts
  • $250+ million in concert grosses since reuniting in 1994
  • Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998

Hotel California 2022 Tour Electrifies Audiences

The current incarnation of the Eagles has been thrilling audiences on their Hotel California 2022 tour across North America. Their concerts see the band perform their entire iconic 1976 album Hotel California from start to finish before treating fans to a long set filled with other classics from their unparalleled catalog.

Reviews of the new lineup have been glowing, with critics and fans raving about the fresh energy and outstanding musicianship Gill and Deacon Frey have brought to the legendary band.

Here‘s a look at what each member brings to the table musically when the Eagles take the stage in 2022:

  • Don Henley – Lead vocals, drums, percussion
  • Joe Walsh – Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, keyboards, vocals
  • Vince Gill – Guitar, mandolin, vocals
  • Deacon Frey – Guitar, piano, vocals
  • Timothy B. Schmit – Bass guitar, vocals

It‘s evident that – even with the passing of key original members Glenn Frey and Bernie Leadon – the Eagles‘ spirit and top-notch musicianship continues to thrive thanks to this stellar current lineup. The band sounds as tight as ever and their shows consistently garner rave reviews.

Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Deacon Frey, and Vince Gill all possess tremendous individual talent while also demonstrating an ensemble cohesion that allows them to soar through the Eagles catalog with ease. Their passion and commitment to honoring the Eagles‘ musical legacy is apparent through ever note they play.

For long-time fans or newcomers just discovering their music, the current Eagles lineup delivers a live concert experience that reminds the world why they are one of the most beloved and enduring American rock bands of all time.

The legendary band, Eagle,s has announced a set of upcoming tour dates for 2022 that the group is calling its “Hotel California” 2022 Tour.

The new dates are a continuation of the shows the band played earlier this year on its “Hotel California” 2021 series .

Fans will be treated to a plethora of hits from the Grammy Award-winning, Los Angeles-born band, which will be comprised of frontman Don Henley, guitarist Joe Walsh, bassist Timothy B. Schmit, singer and guitar player Vince Gill, and vocalist Deacon Frey, son of former Eagles singer Glenn Frey.

The Eagles had previously announced dates overseas, beginning in the Netherlands on June 17 and wrapping in London’s New Hyde Park on June 26, 2022. The band will be joined by an opening act (so to speak) of Hall of Famer Robert Plant and Alison Krauss on the June 26 gig in London.

The  Hotel California  tour came about after the Eagles performed three sold-out  Hotel California  gigs in Las Vegas last year. The show features a full-album performance of the supergroup’s 1976 classic, with the Eagles playing alongside an orchestra and a choir, as well as a second set of the band’s greatest hits.

The Eagles, who are known as one of the best selling bands of all time, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. The band, which released its self-titled debut album in 1972, is sure to have many fans staying at the proverbial hotel. Check out the live concert footage below.

The Eagles Profile

The Eagles are a classic rock band who have sold more than 120 million albums worldwide while producing five #1 singles and six Grammy Awards. Their 3x Platinum two-disc compilation album ‘The Very Best Of” was released in 2003 and spent a total of 62 weeks on Billboard 200 chart. They are arguably known most for their single “Hotel California”.

2020 was the first Eagles tour since the death of lead singer Glenn Frey. Filling in on vocals for the tour are Glenn’s son, Deacon Frey, and Vince Gill. Most shows had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. That tour was rescheduled for 2021 and then eventually for 2022.

The Eagles announced their final farewell tour in 2023, where they will perform the entirety of their Hotel California album, along with other Greatest Hits. The success of that tour led to The Eagles extending the dates into 2024. They also added a Las Vegas residency onto the end of the tour at the Sphere!

The trek will continue with a gig a Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland, followed by a show at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland and a June 26 gig at Hyde Park in London as part of the BST Hyde Park series, where they will share the bill with former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant and bluegrass legend Alison Krauss. Other acts slated to play this year’s massive BST event include Elton John, Adele, Pearl Jam and Duran Duran.

Breaking news, hanson announces 2024 tour with phantom planet. get tickets today.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Isaac (L), Zac and Taylor Hanson sing together in concert.

Hanson isn’t above a clever gimmick.

The ’90s trio behind the unforgettable cultural sensation “Mmmbop” just announced that they’re taking off on their ‘Underneath Experience Tour’ this fall. They’ll play their 2004 album “Underneath” in its entirety two nights in a row at venues all over North America on the run.

That’s not all, though.

Each night will be wholly different ‘Underneath Experience’ experiences.

On night one, Taylor, Isaac and Zac will perform an acoustic version of the 13-song record along with special guest Matthew Sweet. To sweeten the deal, all “night one” shows will be followed by an afterparty DJ’d by Taylor.

After that, they’ll return to the same venue the following night for an electric set accompanied by Phantom Planet.

And, yes, they’ll bring their unconventional tour to New York City.

Their first night (aka the acoustic set) goes down at Palladium Times Square on Wednesday, Oct. 16 . The brothers will fire up the amps for their electric night two on Thursday, Oct. 17 .

Can’t wait?

Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming shows on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale is Friday, June 14.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Hanson tour schedule 2024

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

“Underneath”

The 13-track 2004 record is a departure from the boy band’s well-documented bubblegum pop sound.

Over 54 minutes, they lean into hard-charging yet harmonious rock, jangly indie pop, soaring ballads and radio friendly jams about misery all while wearing their earnest hearts on their sleeves.

Undeniable highlights include the infectious opening track “Strong Enough To Break,” shiny, Hall and Oates-esque “Lost Without Each Other” and energetic “Get Up & Go.”

Don’t skip the horn-heavy “Crazy Beautiful” either. While Hanson clearly tried to escape the “Mmmbop” sound, you can hear a bit of the undeniably catchy hit in there.

To hear the record in full, you can find “Underneath” here .

Hanson special guests

Planning on basing whether you attend night one or two on the special guest?

If that’s the case, you can hear each act’s most streamed song on Spotify below to help inform your choice.

Matthew Sweet: “Girlfriend”

Phantom Planet: “California”

Huge stars on tour in 2024

Love Hanson but can’t find other bands with similar sounds?

Here are just five on tour this year that might do the trick.

•  Justin Timberlake

•  Joey Fatone

• New Kids On The Block

•  Jonas Brothers

2024 philadelphia eagles super bowl odds, with conference, division and win total best bets, share this article.

You can classify the 2023 Philadelphia Eagles season as a disappointment. They finished 11-6 in the regular season and were smoked 32-9 as 3-point road favorites at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a Wild Card Game — not what was expected out of the then-defending NFC and NFC East champions.

QB Jalen Hurts finished 2nd in the NFL MVP voting in 2022 behind Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. But Hurts wasn’t in the discussion last year despite throwing for more yards (3,858) and more touchdowns (23) than the season before (3,701 and 22). It was obvious to most everyone that he was playing through pain last year. Whether it was lingering shoulder pain or an MCL issue, he did not seem himself. Hurts was hesitant to run and finished 2023 rushing for 155 less yards than 2022 … and he played 2 more games last season. The Eagles can only hope that rest and rehab this offseason will have Hurts back to 100% before the start of the new campaign.

The Eagles made significant moves in the offseason in hopes of returning to Super Bowl for the 2nd time in the last 3 seasons. The big splash was signing All-Pro RB Saquon Barkley away from the division rival New York Giants. They also bolstered their pass rush by adding DE Bryce Huff (formerly with the New York Jets) and brought back CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson , adding much needed depth to the secondary. Gardner-Johnson returns after an injury-plagued season with the Detroit Lions. He played for the Eagles during the recent NFC Championship season in 2022.

The Eagles did take a major hit to their offensive line with the retirement of C Jason Kelce. The impact he had on and off the field cannot be measured. GM Howie Roseman made sure to lock up stud OL Landon Dickerson to a long-term deal. WRs A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith also received extensions, keep the dynamic duo together in Philadelphia for at least the next 3 seasons.

The addition of Barkley to an already loaded offense should put the Eagles in contention to win the NFC once again. It will all come down to the health and play of Hurts — team will go as far as he can take them.

Below, we look at the Philadelphia Eagles 2024 NFL Super Bowl odds  from  FanDuel Sportsbook  along with projected win total, playoff, conference and division odds as we make our best  NFL picks and predictions .

Odds provided by  FanDuel Sportsbook – last updated May 24 at 5:35 p.m. ET; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub  for a full list.

  • 10.5 wins: (Over: -104 | Under: -118)

According to the Sharp Football Analysis, which based its calculations off the “Vegas forecasted win totals,” the Eagles have the 9th-easiest schedule in the NFL. Their implied line of 10.35 wins is exactly the same as projections by most sportsbooks.

After perusing the schedule for Philadelphia, this line is set pretty perfectly. I see the Eagles finishing with 10 or 11 wins, dancing right around this total. The Eagles start their season in Brazil to face the Green Bay Packers, which will be no easy task. Then they get a 10 day break before their home opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Here is where things get tough, they hit the road for 7 of their next 10 games, 8 of which are against teams that finished with winning records in 2023. Philadelphia can close out the season strong with 4 of their last 5 played at Lincoln Financial Field. Three of those games are against teams that combined for 12 victories a season ago.

The Eagles have 5 prime-time games, including their season opener in Brazil with the Packers (Friday, Sept. 6). They also have the daunting task of facing the AFC North this season.

It will be a photo finish for Philadelphia getting to the 11-win mark. The suggestion is to PASS on this wager as it’s too close to call.

Eagles Super Bowl odds

  • +1400 (bet $100 to win $1,400)

The Eagles have the 7th-best odds to win the Super Bowl, behind the San Francisco 49ers (+550), Chiefs (+600), Baltimore Ravens (+950), Cincinnati Bengals (+1300), Lions (+1300) and Buffalo Bills (+1300).

There seems to be slight disrespect from the books toward the Eagles, especially putting them behind the Bengals and Bills. But the Eagles do have a huge mountain to climb if they want to get back to the Super Bowl, let alone win it. They’ve got a rough regular-season schedule and will have to likely get through one or possibility both the 49ers and Lions just to get to the big game.

They certainly have the talent and the coaching to make this happen, but again, Hurts’ health is an issue. There are going to be times when he’ll have to put this team on his back and carry it to a victory. That will take its toll on a QB who is injury prone and often banged up. We also cannot write off the significance of not having a leader like Kelce in the locker room anymore.

I have the Eagles making the playoffs but falling short of getting to the Super Bowl, so betting them to win the Super Bowl is a PASS as well.

Will Eagles make the playoffs?

  • Yes -210 | No +168

The only scenario I see where the Eagles don’t make the playoffs is if Hurts suffers a major injury. That would derail their entire season and open things up in the NFC for a lot of teams. There is just too much talent on this Philadelphia squad not to at least make the postseason.

Despite my confidence in the Eagles here, risking 2.1 times the potential return and tying that money up for several months doesn’t seem reasonable. There are better values and futures bets elsewhere … for the Eagles or other teams, too.

Odds to win NFC East Division

  • Eagles +115 ( bet $100 to win $115 )
  • Cowboys +130 (bet $100 to win $130)
  • Commanders +1000 (bet $100 to win $1,000)
  • Giants +1000 (bet $100 to win $1,000)

The NFC East is a 2-horse race between Philly and Dallas. The Cowboys always seem to impress during the regular season but flame out in the playoffs. They claimed the East crown a year ago, but after losing basically their entire defensive coaching staff and making no moves in the offseason, it’ll be tough for them to repeat.

The Commanders should make some noise in the division after completely overhauling their front office, coaching staff and roster. They’ve also got the excitement of bringing in No. 2 overall pick QB Jayden Daniels (LSU) to lead this franchise into the future. While they should be improved, they are a year or two away from really competing.

The odd team out in this division is New York. QB Daniel Jones is still presumably the guy, but he doesn’t seem to have the full confidence of the coaching staff. The Giants let their best offensive weapon — Barkley — walk down I-95 to the City of Brotherly Love. The only highlights of their offseason was drafting a legit No. 1 WR in Malik Nabers (LSU) and trading for pass rushing specialist DE Brian Burns from the Carolina Panthers.

I give the Eagles the edge to win the division over the Cowboys because of strength of schedule. BET EAGLES TO WIN NFC EAST (+115) .

Eagles odds to win NFC

  • +700 (bet $100 to win $700)

Philadelphia has the 4th-shortest odds to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl — behind the 49ers (+250), Lions (+600) and Cowboys (+650).

There is no question that the Eagles can match talent with any of the 3 bigger favorites. From top to bottom, the Eagles have one of the best rosters in the NFL, which only got stronger with the addition of Barkley.

Philadelphia also has the advantage (experience) of getting to the Super Bowl just 2 years ago, coming within a field goal of winning it all. The Eagles know what it takes to get there. This team will go as far as Hurts can take it, and if he’s healthy, I believe they can get to New Orleans in February.

I’ll definitely put some money down on EAGLES TO WIN THE NFC (+700) .

Recent bird sightings

A flock of ducks is flying in front of a blue sky.

Celebrating the fall migration

Canvasback duck close-up swimming slowly in the water.

Mid-October through mid-November is an amazing time to see water birds on the Upper Mississippi River! As staff and volunteers share estimates of bird counts on the river, we'll update this page to share the news.

When do the birds arrive?

Dabbling ducks and American white pelicans arrive first in late summer and early fall. Diving ducks usually start getting here in mid-to-late October. Tundra swans typically show up in late October or early November. The weather greatly influences when the birds arrive, how long they will stay, and how concentrated they are on the river. Cold temperatures north of the refuge push birds to move south and arrive here on the river. If it's a warm fall, we'll likely see a slower migration. Many birds will stay until it gets cold enough for the Mississippi River to freeze over. When the Mississippi River freezes quickly, we see birds more concentrated in areas where there is still open water. When it freezes more slowly, we still see large numbers of birds, but they may be more spread out over open water. The peak of the tundra swan migration is typically the second or third week of November.

Why do they come here?

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge lies within the Mississippi Flyway, which is like a superhighway in the sky for birds! As one of the largest bodies of water in the Midwest, the Mississippi River takes longer to freeze than smaller rivers or ponds. It is also easy for birds to see from high above! The refuge offers high quality food sources for wildlife and shelter from the elements.

There are many excellent places to see birds along the river! The following locations are some of the most popular walk-in or drive-in locations where refuge staff and volunteers are regularly able to visit to estimate bird numbers. Things are starting to freeze over but there are still a few places you can see birds. These sites are visible on the refuge Pool Maps . NOTE: These sites are not all updated on the same dates so some are more current then others.

Waterfowl are starting to arrive in numbers! Please feel free to share your sightings with us as well.  You can email your sightings to us at [email protected]

Pool 5 - Weaver Bottoms

The best place to see swans in the Weaver Bottoms area is from 116th Avenue/service road adjacent to MN Highway 61 near St. Mary's Cemetery. This location is about 17 miles north of Winona, MN.

Updated 11/16/23

600-700 swans; mostly all Tundra but I did hear a couple Trumpeters

100 Canada Geese

300 Dabbling ducks, mostly all Mallards, but I did see Northern Shoveler, Wood Duck, American Wigeon, Northern Pintail, Gadwall, and Green Wing Teal

5,000+ diving ducks far out and hard to see; Scaup, Ring-necked Duck, Canvasback

5 Bald Eagles

Pool 7 - Lake Onalaska Overlook

The Lake Onalaska Overlook is located at W7687 County Road ZB, Onalaska, WI, 54650. There's a small parking lot across the street from the overlook, or it's about a half mile walk from the La Crosse District Visitor Center. The Visitor Center has a large parking lot suitable for bus parking.

Updated Thurs. 11/9/23

Swans: There were about 1500-2000 swans in the distance on the Minnesota side of the river. There were also some American white pelicans there too.

Puddle ducks: 4000-6000 birds, mostly American coot, some gadwall, American wigeon, northern pintail and mallards

Other birds - red-tailed hawk

Pool 8 - Brownsville Overlook

The Brownsville Overlook is located about three miles south of Brownsville, MN off of MN Hwy 26. There are two spotting scopes available at this overlook. Binoculars are helpful, but birds can usually be viewed from the overlook deck even if you don't have a pair.

Updated 12/11/23

Canada geese - 20-30

Swans - 10-15

Bald eagles - 10-15 relatively close to the overlook and easily seen, 50-75 farther away and visible with binoculars or a scope

Nearly all the swans and other waterfowl that were at this location two weeks ago are gone.  Many have likely left the refuge and are on the remaining leg of their fall migration, or maybe even settling in to their wintering ground.  But many of them have simply shifted to a different part of Lower Pool 8 - the Crosby Slough area east of Brownsville, MN.  The Crosby Slough area is in Wisconsin and the Wisconsin duck season is closed until next year.  The Wisconsin goose season is closed this week but will reopen on December 16.  The waterfowl have likely shifted to the Crosby Slough area, and other similar areas on the refuge, for two reasons (1) after concentrating in the refuge closed areas for the past two months, the amount of food in the closed areas is probably relatively low compared to areas outside the closed areas; and (2) hunting is not occurring in the areas outside of the closed areas, and boat traffic in general is also greatly reduced outside of the closed areas.

Pool 8 - Hwy 26 Overlook

The Hwy 26 Overlook is located about 3.5 miles south of Brownsville, MN off of MN Hwy 26.  Binoculars are helpful but birds can often be seen from the deck without them.

Updated 12/11/23

There's a fair amount of ice but still plenty of open water.

Dabblers - 25-50 mallards

Divers - 100-150 common goldeneye, bufflehead, ring-necked duck

Canada geese - 100-200

Swans - 15-25 relatively close to the overlook, 200-400 farther away in scattered groups.  Many of these were trumpeter swans but tundra swans were present as well.

Pool 8 - Shady Maple Overlook

The Shady Maple Overlook is located a few miles south of La Crosse on Hwy 35, just south of Goose Island Park.

Puddle ducks - 5,000-8,000 gadwall, northern pintail, American wigeon, mallard, wood duck, green-winged teal, American black duck

Canada geese - 30-50

Swans 300-500 (both tundra swans and trumpeter swans)

American white pelicans - 15-20

Pool 8 - Reno Bottoms Canoe Access

The Reno Bottoms Canoe Access   is located off HWY 26, just east of Reno, Minnesota. This canoe access is managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and has a small gravel parking lot. Please be cautious crossing the railroad tracks. Visitors can walk out on a narrow dike/spillway that stretches several miles across the river. Please note that in high water conditions, water flows over the spillway and it's not safe to cross. We count birds close to first hundred yards of the spillway that visitors will be able to see with binoculars, but huge rafts of diving ducks are visible if you take a walk further down the spillway.

Update: 12/11/23

There's a lot of ice and almost no waterfowl, but there are still a lot of bald eagles that can be seen here.

Pool 8 Crosby Slough Area

This is an area of multiple channels and shallow backwater areas that is on the east side of the main channel, directly east of Brownsville, MN, and Wildcat Park and Boat Landing.  Lots of the waterfowl that were previously in the Wisconsin Islands Closed Area (i.e., the areas visible from the Brownsville Overlook and the Hwy 26 Overlook) are now in the Crosby Slough area.  The waterfowl have likely shifted to the Crosby Slough area, and other similar areas on the refuge, for two reasons (1) after concentrating in the refuge closed areas for the past two months, the amount of food in the closed areas is probably relatively low compared to areas outside the closed areas; and (2) hunting is not occurring in the Crosby Slough area and boat traffic in general is also greatly reduced outside of the closed areas.  The Crosby Slough area is in Wisconsin and the Wisconsin duck season is closed until next year.  The Wisconsin goose season is closed this week but will reopen on December 16.

Waterfowl in the Crosby Slough area are viewable with binoculars but a scope is even better.  There are several large, gravel pull offs on the side of Hwy 26 in the Brownsville vicinity where cars can safely park and observers can get out and set up scopes.  There are also some lightly traveled streets in Brownsville that offer an elevated view, and parking on the side of the street is safe.

Dabblers - 3000-5000 mallard, northern pintail, gadwall

Divers - 1000-2000 ring-necked duck, common goldeneye, bufflehead

Canada geese - 500-1000

Swans - 5000-10000

Bald eagles - 75-100

Lower Pool 9 - Various Locations

Updated 11/14/23

There are several safe viewing locations where Hwy 35 runs along the Wisconsin side of Lower Pool 9.  One is called the Leitner Creek Overlook on Google Maps and it is directly across from Leitner Hollow Road, a little less than  ½ mile north of the entrance road to the lock and dam.   Another location, a little more than  ½ mile upstream from the Leitner Creek Overlook,  is a highway wayside area with a historical marker about log and lumber rafting on the Mississippi River during the 1800s and early 1900s.  Finally, Depot Road is a short, elevated road above the Lynxville boat launch.  It has ample pull-off space and is mostly travelled by vehicles pulling boat trailers and sometimes railroad crews.  All of these areas provide opportunities to safely park and get out of your vehicle to view the massive flocks of diving ducks using Lower Pool 9 during migration.  Sometimes binoculars are sufficient to scan the tens of thousands of ducks in the open impounded area of the pool, other times a spotting scope is the best equipment to use. Here's what was visible on November 14th:

Diving ducks - 25000-35000 canvasback, lesser scaup, common goldeneye, bufflehead and redhead could be seen stretching from near the dam all the way upstream to the Lynxville area.  At the Leitner Creek overlook and the Hwy 35 wayside area, a spotting scope was the best way to see them, but binoculars worked as well.  At the Lynxville boat launch binoculars were sufficient because there were many birds close to the boat launch.

Dabbling ducks - a few mallards were seen scattered around here and there at all three viewing locations.

Swans - from the Lynxville boat launch, 200-300 swans could be seen with a spotting scope around some of the constructed islands to the west of the boat launch.

Pool 9 - Red Oak Road

Birds can be seen from Red Oak Road, approximately 2.5 miles north of Harpers Ferry, Iowa in Allamakee County. To get there, f ollow X-52/Great River Road north from Harpers Ferry. Turn right, as X-52 curves left, onto Red Oak Road. Follow the narrow Red Oak Road upriver about 1.5 miles, and look for a cove where the swans gather.

Updated 11/27/23

500-1000 swans

100 bald eagles - there were 2 on almost every muskrat hut

Pool 13 - Spring Lake public use site

Updated 11/12/23

This public use site can be accessed by starting at the intersection of Hwy 52 and Hwy 84 in Savanna, IL , then travelling south on Hwy 84 for about 3 miles.  Note that this site is about 1 mile south of the Frog Pond public use site.  Both the Spring Lake site and Frog Pond site are on the west side of Hwy 84.  If travelling north on Hwy 84, it is about 5 miles  north of Thomson, IL,  and about 1 mile north of Airport Road.

Right at the Spring Lake parking lot there is a set of permanently mounted spotting scopes looking over Lower Spring Lake, as well as a dike separating Lower Spring Lake to the south and Upper Spring Lake to the North.  Both areas have a lot of emergent aquatic vegetation that obscures the views of a lot of waterbirds that are using these areas.  In spite of that, a lot of waterbirds are visible in areas of open water.  Also, there is an elevated wildlife observation deck located a little less than ½ mile north of the Spring Lake parking lot.  It can be accessed by walking north on the public use trail located on top of a dike serving as the eastern boundary of Upper Spring Lake.

Dabblers - 4000-6000 gadwall, northern shoveler, northern pintail, mallard, green-winged teal, wood duck

Divers - 25-50 bufflehead

Canada geese - 1000-2000

Swans - 2000-4000 (only tundra swans were heard but there were likely trumpeter swans as well)

American white pelicans - 100-2000

Great blue herons - 3

Bald eagles - 20-30 (many of the eagles were actively hunting, flushing ducks into the air)

Pool 13 - Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center wildlife observation site

This site is right across the road from the refuge's Savanna District office, which also house the refuge's Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center at 6870 Riverview Rd, Thomson, IL 61285.

Dabblers - 100-200 close to the observation site, 1000-3000  were farther out.  A mixture of northern shoveller, gadwall, mallard, and green-winged teal

Canada geese - 150-250

American coot - 2000-4000

Sandhill cranes - they use this area every day and refuge staff said there have been approximately 100 in recent days.  None were observed on this visit so they were likely feeding in the nearby crop fields.

Bald eagles - 10-15

Lower Pool 13 - Potters Marsh

Updated 11/11/23

Potters Marsh and Lower Pool 13 are good viewing sites accessed by driving south on Hwy 84 from Thomsen, IL, then turning right (west) on Lock Road.  Lock Road runs along the south side of Potters Marsh and terminates at a boat landing and elevated parking lot overlooking lower Pool 13.

Potters Marsh

Dabbling ducks - 500-1000 mallards, gadwall

Diving ducks - 50-100 lesser scaup

Other water birds: 2000-4000 American coots, a pied-billed grebe and 5-10 American bald eagles

Lower Pool 13

Dabbling ducks - 500-1000 mallards, gadwall, American wigeon feeding with the diving ducks out in the open water

Diving ducks  - 20000-30000 lesser scaup, canvasback, bufflehead, ruddy duck, common merganser

Double-crested cormorant  - 50-150

Bald eagle - 15-20

A lot of the ducks were easily viewed with binoculars from the parking lot on the upstream side of the lock, but a good spotting scope allows you to see the tens of thousands of ducks that extend a loooong way up the pool.

Voluntary Waterfowl Avoidance Areas

There are few places quite like the refuge to experience the fall migration! Boaters enjoying the river can help keep this a great place for people and wildlife by watching out for special Voluntary Waterfowl Avoidance Areas during the peak of the migration. From October 15 through mid-November, all boaters are asked to avoid these "refuges within the refuge" to give waterfowl a place to rest without being startled off the water. Voluntary Waterfowl Avoidance Areas are marked with either orange-and-white buoys on the water or orange-and-blue Special Regulation Signs posted along area boundaries. These locations are also shown on the refuge Pool Maps .  Making this change for about a month of our lives can make a big difference for theirs! Thanks for being part of our conservation community and for playing a role in their survival!

Staff attach a concrete anchor to an orange-and-white Voluntary Waterfowl Avoidance Area buoy before deploying the buoy on the Mississippi River
