Everything about this concert was amazing. It was everything I had hoped for. He mentioned being a little under the weather, but I didn't notice any difference at all! He had amazing energy, as did the crowd, and the venue was remarkable.. All I can think about is the next time I'll be able to see him! :)

Best show I've seen in years. The vibes were simply amazing. He sounds even better live in comparison to his recorded tracks, that's not often that an artist is that great. I was able to meet him after the show and I wasn't VIP. Amazing person, artist, and performer. 10/10 Would go to another Tiller concert any day.

Having been to nightclub "concerts" in the past, I already knew the main show wouldn't start until 2AM. That was expected, and I figured the soothing sound of Bryson Tiller's voice would make up for the sobering headache and unbearable pain of my heels. What I did not expect was for Bryson Tiller, the headliner, the main attraction, to exit the building without not only failing to perform a single song, but also without even stepping foot on the stage. The only proof that he even graced us with his presence was the MC's announcements that "Bryson Tiller is in the building" and "Bryson Tiller has left the building". If a tree falls in the woods and no ones there to hear it, does it make a sound? If Bryson Tiller shows up at a nightclub and no one even sees him, was he ever actually there? Hmm, seems suspicious to me. What also seems suspicious is the multiple announcements of celebrities that were supposedly in the building, yet were never seen. The only walk through that anyone really noticed was Wiz Khalifa. Other than that, there was a (very long and drawn out) performance by 2chainz, Bryson's co-headliner, in which many people left in the middle of. This will definitely be my last nightclub concert. The next time I go to a concert, it will be at a venue, so I know the concert is more about the actua artist and less about getting heads in the door to promote a nightclub.

Bryson Tiller’s Self-Titled Album Will Come To A City Near You Thanks To ‘The Bryson Tiller Tour’

Wongo Okon

Later this year will mark four years since Bryson Tiller released his third album Anniversary . That project at the time was released to celebrate the fifth anniversary of his breakout debut album Trapsoul . Since Anniversary , things have been moderately timid for the Louisville singer who released a Christmas project in 2021, and his three-part Slum Tiller mixtape series with a few singles sprinkled in between. Tiller is about to get a bit more active in the music world as he recently announced his self-titled album and released a new single “ Calypso .” As if that wasn’t enough good news, the singer will also embark on a tour in support of Bryson Tiller .

About Bryson Tiller:

Bryson Tiller became one of the key breakout stars in 2010s contemporary R&B with the single “Don’t” and a descriptively titled parent album, T R A P S O U L (2015), a moody swaggering set of slow jams that neologized a subgenre the singer/rapper took to the mainstream with multi-platinum certifications and Grammy nominations. True to Self (2017) and A N N I V E R S A R Y (2019), his subsequent studio albums, have either topped the Billboard 200 or reached the chart’s Top Ten. Tiller’s additional hits as a featured artist and duet partner are highlighted by DJ Khalid’s “Wild Thoughts” and H.E.R.’s “Could’ve Been.”

Tiller started singing and rapping as a high schooler in his native Louisville, Kentucky, and in his late teens released a mixtape, Killer Instinct, Vol. 1. He was just into his twenties when SoundCloud uploads such as “Don’t,” “Break Bread,” and “Let ‘Em Know” brought him greater recognition. Timbaland reached out to collaborate and convinced Tiller to quit his job to do so. Drake expressed interest in signing Tiller to his OVO Sound label, but after some deliberation, Tiller accepted an offer from RCA, and made his major-label debut in May 2015 with the commercial release of “Don’t.” The sparse ballad peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and eventually went multi-platinum). The full-length T R A P S O U L followed a few months later and reached number eight on the Billboard 200. Within six months, the album was certified platinum, supported by additional multi-platinum hits “Exchange” and “Sorry Not Sorry,” the latter of which was co-produced by Timbaland. “Exchange,” a number 26 pop hit, was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best R&B Song.

Featured appearances and non-album singles as a headliner led to the May 2017 release of Tiller’s second album, True to Self. Another set dominated by thumping slow jams, it went straight to number one. Around the same time, Tiller was featured beside Rihanna on DJ Khaled’s number two hit “Wild Thoughts.” Additional featured appearances and other stray tracks preceded Tiller’s third album. Most notable were duets with Jazmine Sullivan and H.E.R., respectively “Insecure” (for the soundtrack of the like-titled series) and the Grammy-nominated “Could’ve Been.” Issued in October 2020, A N N I V E R S A R Y landed at number five and contained “Outta Time,” featuring guest vocals by Drake and production from 40, Nineteen85, and Vinylz. A year later, coinciding with both Halloween and the tenth anniversary of his first mixtape, Tiller offered his second tape, Killer Instinct 2: The Nightmare Before. Another holiday-themed recording, A Different Christmas, was out the next month with Justin Bieber, Pentatonix, and Kiana Ledé on the guest list. The EP included mostly original songs and an update of “Winter Wonderland.” In 2022, Tiller guested on Diddy’s “Gotta Move On” and released the solo single “Outside.”

Jeremih Taps Chris Brown and Bryson Tiller for New Song 'Wait on It'

Jeremih links with Chris Brown and Bryson Tiller for his new single “Wait On It.”

Produced by Cássio and Retro Future, “Wait On It” finds the R&B gents crooning about the thrills of a situationship—even when they aren’t clear on where they actually stand.

“Just might kiss on her lips right by her hips like mwah, baby / Pop champagne older than, this Lo Spumante,” Jeremih sings in verse one.

Tiller appears in the second verse, singing, “We ain’t even had no conversation for a minute / I ain’t trying to play with your feelings / I gotta know if you’re still his or mine.”

Last but not least, Breezy arrives in verse three, singing, “White sands, you drove the boat to / Now you got all these new friends tryna coach you / I remember when I used to be your go-to.”

Speaking on his new collaboration, Jeremih shares, “I feel like big songs have become a lost art in male R&B and with me, CB and Bryson, it just feels massive immediately. I know a lot of folks are going to say it’s been too long and I agree with them. I’ve definitely felt like R&B has been missing me, but I didn’t want to return with something that I felt wasn’t timeless.”

He continues, “So, after getting off the road with 50 Cent last year, I finally got some time to put together something that I believe can last forever again.”

“Wait On It” is Jeremih’s first proper single since “ Room ” with Adekunle Gold and 2 Chainz in July 2023.

“Wait On It” is the first taste from Jeremih’s upcoming release series, which includes three seven-track EPs and an album that will follow 2015’s  Late Nights: The Album .

As for Brown, the R&B star is on his  11:11 Tour   supporting his 11th album,  11:11 , with special guests Maeta and Muni Long . The album was released Nov. 10, 2023, via RCA Records. On April 11, Brown released  11:11 (Deluxe) , an expanded version of the album consisting of 13 new tracks.

Meanwhile, Tiller is on the tail-end of The Bryson Tiller Tour , named after his self-titled album . The 19-track project was preceded by the singles “Outside,” “Whatever She Wants,” and “Calypso.” It also features Victoria Monét and Clara La San.

Jeremih Recruits Fellow R&B Stars Bryson Tiller & Chris Brown For "Wait On It"

jeremih wait on it

Jeremih has been a major player figure in the R&B space for nearly a decade and a half. While he might not be as eager to release that much solo material anymore, he is back to remind folks why he is still a star. The way Jeremih is doing that is dropping a new single, "Wait On It". However, he is not doing this by himself, as Bryson Tiller and Chris Brown are joining him for this single about being the sneaky link.

This is just the Chicago, Illinois native's second solo release in the last year, with "Wait On It" superseding "Room" . That song also had two other guests, as Adekunle Gold and 2 Chainz were enlisted there. There is a slight chance that Jeremih is working toward a new album. If so, it would be the first since the 2022 rerelease of his mixtape, Late Nights With Jeremih . This single is also contributing to the strong years that Bryson Tiller and Chris Brown are having. The former is fresh off dropping his first studio album in four years , Bryson Tiller . Chris Breezy is carrying over momentum from the deluxe of his 2023 album 11:11 and his back-and-forth spat with Quavo .

Jeremih, Bryson Tiller And Chris Brown Attempt To Woo The Same Woman In “Wait On It” Video

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Jeremih has tapped fellow R&B faves Bryson Tiller and Chris Brown for his latest visual, “Wait On It.”

The BenMarc-directed clip follows a woman attempting to be wooed by all three gentleman throughout her day, having dealt with all of them in her past at some point.

Jeremih is up first, as he calls the woman and is saved as “It’s Complicated” in her phone. She later hits up a party where she’s spotted by Tiller, resulting in him calling and being identified as her official ex. After she appears to let him down gently, she then locks eyes with Brown, who tells us in his verse that she has him, “saved as ‘don’t answer’ on your caller ID,” indicating he might be that fun, yet toxic ex you want to keep away from.

“White sand, you drove the boat too (Drove the boat), Now you got all these new friends tryna coach you, I remember when I used to be your go-to, Now when I make a reservation, you say, ‘No, boo (NoBu),'” Brown sings as she finds her way back to Jeremih, and ditches him, too.

The All About You artist is gearing up to drop new music, taking to Instagram (which appears to have been recently scrubbed ahead “Wait On It’s” release) to alert fans of heat on the way.

“I Know I Made Yall ‘Wait On It,’ But I Promise This New Music Is Going To Be Worth The Wait. I Didn’t Want To Give Yall Anything That Didn’t Feel Like ‘Forever’ Again! Ppreciate’ All Mih Fans For Holding Me Down, MUCH LUV!.”

“‘WAIT ON IT’ ON REPEAT ALL SUMMER!!!” he added of the new track. Check it out above.

The Chicago-crooner is also set to hit the stage this summer, as he’ll be performing during 2024 ESSENCE Festival in New Orleans alongside Mya and Jadakiss at the AT&T’s Dream in Black connected stage from July 4-7. He’ll then head to Shreveport to take the stage at 50 Cent’s Humor & Harmony Festival, which will take place from August 8 to 11. Fellow acts will include comedians DC Young Fly, Gary Owens and Bill Bellamy, as well as performers Cam’ron, French Montana and 2 Chainz, with more guests to be announced.

Jeremih Returns with New Single “Wait On It” Featuring Bryson Tiller and Chris Brown

Mail

GRAMMY-nominated singer, songwriter, and producer Jeremih makes his highly anticipated return to music with the new single, “Wait On It,” featuring fellow R&B powerhouses Bryson Tiller and Chris Brown. “Wait On It” marks the official first single from Jeremih’s upcoming music series, which includes three seven-song EPs and his first solo project since 2015’s double-platinum LP, “Late Nights: The Album.”

bryson tiller tour list

The mid-tempo R&B song sets the perfect vibe for summer as Jeremih, Bryson, and Chris explore the tumultuous and sometimes emotionally toxic dynamics between lovers struggling to find common ground. The lush music video, directed by BenMarc, showcases the trio vying for the attention of the same woman, unaware of each other’s pursuits.

Produced by Cássio (Don Toliver, NBA YoungBoy) and Jeremih’s frequent collaborator Retro Future, who has previously worked on both “Late Nights: The Album” and 2018’s Ty Dolla $ign collaboration project, “MIH-TY,” “Wait On It” is a testament to Jeremih’s continued influence and innovation in the R&B genre.

The 2024 BET Awards are officially going down this Sunday (June 30), where people from all over the country will tune into the legendary show to see artists, athletes, entertainers, and trailblazers honored for making their mark in the culture.

A lot went down from March 2023 – March 2024 (the award show’s official eligibility period), so there’s a lot of recognition to be given. Patrick Mahomes helped the Kansas City Chiefs bring home a Super Bowl win, Nicki Minaj unveiled her highly anticipated follow-up to 2010’s Pink Friday , Beyoncé broke record after record with her Renaissance World Tour, and much more.

In terms of nominations, Drake leads the pack with seven total. He is followed closely by Nicki Minaj with six, while J. Cole, Sexyy Red , SZA and Victoria Monét each have five nods. 21 Savage, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla , and Usher each have four. Check out the full list of nominees here .

The 2024 BET Awards will air live from Los Angeles on BET on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/PT. This year’s theme is “Standing on Culture.” The program is set to be another great one, with Taraji P. Henson hosting and performances by names like Will Smith and Megan Thee Stallion.

Ahead of the 2024 BET Awards this Sunday, check out VIBE’s official predictions list of potential winners.

Best Collaboration

Nicki Minaj, Lil Uzi Vert

  • Lil Durk feat. J. Cole, “All My Life”
  • Beyoncé feat. Kendrick Lamar, “America Has A Problem (Remix)”
  • Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice (with Aqua), “Barbie World”
  • Cardi B feat. Megan Thee Stallion, “Bongos”
  • Ye & Ty Dolla $ign feat. Rich The Kid and Playboi Carti, “Carnival”
  • Lola Brooke feat. Latto and Yung Miami, “Don’t Play With It (Remix)”
  • Nicki Minaj feat. Lil Uzi Vert, “Everybody”
  • Usher feat. Summer Walker and 21 Savage, “Good Good”
  • Drake feat. Sexyy Red and SZA, “Rich Baby Daddy”

Who Should Win: “Everybody” by Nicki Minaj and Lil Uzi Vert

Hip-Hop saw a slew of collaborations worthy of airplay in 2023. Whether it be a track that makes you dance, a thought-provoking single about real issues, or an emotionally charged bop — music artists came together to deliver inescapable tunes that will be on repeat for years to come.

As “All My Life” by Lil Durk and J. Cole became an ear-worm for its catchy hook and K.dot’s surprise verse on Bey’s “America Has A Problem (Remix)” became the collab we didn’t know we needed — other link-ups like Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World” stood as a fun song to rap along to. Lola Brooke’s “Don’t Play With It” originally released in 2021, but she gave the song a fresh remix with Latto and Yung Miami last year.

However, when it comes down to the collaboration most deserving of the 2024 BET Award, either “Everybody” by Nicki Minaj and Lil Uzi Vert or Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy” with Sexyy Red and SZA will most likely score the feat. “Everybody” not only infused Jersey Club the right way (with an actual NJ producer) but has become the party-pleasing tune that can be found on commercials, video games — and upon its release — in everyone’s TikToks. The song also charted top 10 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, serving as a standout on Minaj’s fifth studio album Pink Friday 2 — which has also seen much success.

As for Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy,” the single definitely dominated airwaves, saw much replay value, and garnered even higher chart success than “Everybody,” but the tune simply doesn’t compare to the latter when it comes to popularity amongst the masses. –  Amber Corrine

Best Female R&B/Pop Artist

Victoria Monét 2024 BET Awards

  • Victoria Monét

Who Should Win: Victoria Monét

This year’s win belongs to Victoria Monét, hands down.

Each contender makes for a strong argument. Between Coco Jones’ Grammy win and Muni Long landing another viral single , both women had the R&B streets on lock. As far as other nominees are concerned, H.E.R. has been relatively quiet, Doja Cat is more Hip-Hop than R&B, Beyoncé has been deep in her country bag, and SZA won last year with  SOS .

The argument can be made that Tyla and Victoria can tie for the win, but  JAGUAR II   was the best  R&B album that was released this past year — emphasis on R&B. With “ Water ” and “ Jump ,” Tyla is better suited to win Best New Artist and/or Best International Act, but Victoria rightfully owned R&B with her masterful debut album. Between “ Alright ,” “ On My Mama ,” and “How Does It Make You Feel,” the LP catapulted Victoria’s artistry into a new level, setting her apart from all of her contemporaries in the brightest way. — Mya Abraham

Best Male R&B/Pop Artist

Usher wearing black shirt

  • Brent Faiyaz
  • Bryson Tiller
  • Chris Brown
  • October London

Who Should Win: Usher

Most of the eight nominees for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist are worthy contenders for the trophy (less Bryson Tiller, whose self-titled album dropped after BET eligibility dates). Burna Boy and Drake’s eligible releases do not quite fit the category, being better suited for international act and Hip-Hop, respectively. However, the remaining five artists all delivered strong efforts for this year’s R&B/Pop throne.

While the efforts of Chris Brown, Brent Faiyaz, Fridayy, and October London are not unnoticed, experience proves key in deciding the winner.  Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Usher should take the 2024 BET Award for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist.

The VIBE -coronated King OF R&B edges out his competition with vocal skill, artistic vision, and undeniable star power. His Coming Home album finds the singer exploring contemporary styles while not abandoning the traditional R&B his day-one fans appreciate. Through 20 tracks, Usher is sensual and sexy, charismatic and fun, vulnerable and deep. The work boasts his capacity to find inspiration in not only past and present R&B trends but his own longstanding career, an ability his competitors just do not yet have.

Bonus Points: Dropping his 9th studio album in alignment with headlining SuperBowl LVII is an unmatched flex. — DeMicia Inman

Video Of The Year

Victoria Monet in the 'On My Mama' Music Video.

  • Doja Cat, “Agora Hills”
  • Lil Durk feat J. Cole, “All My Life”
  • Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice (With Aqua), “Barbie World”
  • Drake feat. J. Cole, “First Person Shooter”
  • Usher , Summer Walker & 21 Savage, “Good Good”
  • Victoria Monét , “On My Mama”
  • Drake feat. Sexyy Red & SZA, “Rich Baby Daddy”

Who Should Win: Victoria Monét, “On My Mama”

The past 12 months have brought Hip-Hop and R&B fans some spectacular visuals. Cardi B’s “Bongos” transported us to a colorful beachfront while Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice took us on a ride through “Barbie World.” “Agora Hills,” “Good Good,” and “Rich Baby Daddy” all gave us a unique perspective on modern relationships while both “First Person Shooter” and “All My Life” found J. Cole in front of the camera.

Our prediction to take home the trophy, however, is Victoria Monét for her brilliant “On My Mama” video. Not only is it visually stunning, but actively pays homage to her musical influences, HBCUs, and the beauty of Black culture. Its references to everything from viral memes to early 2000s fashion lets us know Monét is a true student of the game, crafting a short that managed to enhance the experience of an already stellar song. Throw in stunning choreography from Sean Bankhead, and it only makes sense for the Best New Artist Grammy winner to walk away with the BET Award for Video Of The Year. — Jessica Bennett

Best Male Hip-Hop Artist

Gunna at P by Gunna launch party.

  • Kendrick Lamar

Who Should Win : Gunna

So, this award would have been a no-brainer for Kendrick Lamar if not for the specific eligibility window falling between March 2023 and March 2024. However, that period excludes everything Lamar put out after his earth-shattering “Like That” verse. So, with that in mind, the logical selection would be the person who dropped a successful album in that period and began rolling out his second out.

A Gift & A Curse was treated like a comeback album simply because the Atlanta rapper was written off. Yet, he delivered a certified hit in “Fukumean” and the fan favorite “Rodeo Dr.” He doubled back less than a year later with “Prada Dem” featuring Offset, which departed from the somber sounds of Gift and showed a much more confident Wunna. Though One Of Wun falls outside of the eligibility window, the momentum Gunna created with “Prada Dem” is more than enough. He deserves to be recognized for beating the odds. — Armon Sadler

Best Female Hip-Hop Artist

nicki minaj

  • Megan Thee Stallion
  • Nicki Minaj

Who Should Win: Nicki Minaj

For the last few years, women have arguably been putting up most of the points in the rap game, making this category stacked with some very strong contenders. Ice Spice has been steadily gearing up for her debut album, while names like Sexyy Red, Latto, and GloRilla stayed in headlines for her catchy hits, but one name reigned superior — and she isn’t new to the top.

Nicki Minaj spun the block on her magnum opus, Pink Friday, and shared its long-awaited sequel on Dec. 8, 2024. The marquee album boasted guest appearances from J. Cole, Drake, Lil Wayne, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, 50 Cent, Monica, and Keyshia Cole. Pink Friday 2 spawned viral hits like “Everybody” featuring Lil Uzi Vert and “Needle” featuring Drizzy, housed vulnerable verses, and gave everything that fans were waiting for.

Not only was it a cathartic event for her longtime fanbase, the project met the immense hype in terms of numbers and artistry. It earned over 228,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, with 92,000 coming from pure album sales. It also achieved the largest vinyl sales week by a female rapper in history and broke Spotify’s record for biggest album debut by a woman rapper in 2023. Musically, the boss Barb made the biggest splash from 2023-2024. — Regina Cho

Best New Artist

Sexyy Red posing for a picture.

  • Ayra Starr
  • BossmanDlow
  • Tyla

Who Should Win: Sexyy Red

No offense to anyone else on this list but the battle is really down to two names: Tyla and Sexyy Red. And we’re going to have to go with the latter. Sexyy Red’s 2023 was one for the books and it all began with her breakout song, “Pound Town,” which dropped on Jan. 27, 2023. The single set the stage for Red’s unstoppable year that followed, with the song going viral and the St. Louis native becoming a national sensation in the process. “Pound Town” was everywhere: TikTok dances and challenges, social media posts from the world’s biggest brands, memes, and it even got the rare Nicki Minaj co-sign. The only other two songs in the culture that were more inescapable were probably Tyla’s “Water” and Sexyy Red’s own “SkeeYee” — which found itself on numerous end-of-the-year lists and even landed the rising star at the NFL’s 2023 season opener featuring the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets.

The St. Louis star would cap off the moment with her second mixtape,  Hood Hottest Princess , which also spawned the viral “Hellcats SRTs,” which had impact in its own right. While Tyla may have secured Grammys and Platinum hits with her meteoric 2023, Red’s was for and by Black American culture. And unlike a trophy, that is a cultural stamp that you just can’t replace.

Sportswoman of the Year

Sha'Carri Richardson

  • A’ja Wilson
  • Angel Reese
  • Flau’jae Johnson
  • Juju Watkins
  • Naomi Osaka
  • Sha’carri Richardson
  • Simone Biles

Who Should Win: Sha’carri Richardson

2023 was a great year for women’s sports as we’ve seen a number of athletes individually give exceptional performances in their respective fields and/or lead their teams to big wins. As the 2024 BET Awards will recognize basketball stars: A’ja Wilson, Angel Reese, Flau’jae Johnson and Juju Watkins; tennis sensations: Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka; historical track star, Sha’carri Richardson and championship gymnast, Simone Biles — only one will take home the Sportswoman Award.

Although each of the latter have shown why they stand out from the rest and have in someway paved their own lane in their respective sport, the two athletes who have the best chance at winning are Angel Reese and Sha’carri Richardson. Reese and Richardson have had to fight to prove themselves to be skilled not only on the court and field, respectively, but also in the public eye. As both have continued to unapologetically be themselves — lashes, nails, and all — they have dealt with people considering their confidence as “arrogance.”

However, Richardson has recently made history as the world’s fastest woman — known for her record-breaking speed in the 100-meter dash. As for Reese, she has also made history as a WNBA rookie, by scoring a rare feat of seven double-doubles in a row as a newly drafted Chicago Sky player.

As there can only be one recipient of the award, Richardson seems most fitting for this year’s Sportswoman award. She has continued to beat the odds while fighting through her battles of depression — making herself a walking campaign for those who deal with the same challenges. Despite her personal obstacles and public scrutiny for past poor choices, Richardson will be representing the U.S.A at the 2024 Paris Olympics starting this August — showing that she is resilient in times of uncertainty and ultimately deserving of an award that highlights what it means to be a true “Sportswoman.” –  Amber Corrine

Who Should Win: Patrick Mahomes

The past year has seen a number of male athletes dominate their respective sport, whether it be leading their team to historic feats or earning individual accolades. The nominees for the 2024 BET Sportsman of the Year Award includes a mix of rising stars and established legends, presenting a stacked field to choose from.

Of the eight sportsmen up for the honor, five are NBA players, as LeBron James, Anthony Edwards, Steph Curry, Kyrie Irving, and Jalen Brunson were included as finalists. Rounding out the list are two NFL stars, Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes, and boxing’s favorite knockout artist, Gervonta “Tank” Davis.

Of this grouping, the two stars who are most deserving of the award are Anthony Edwards and Patrick Mahomes. Edwards established himself as the potential future face of the NBA with a breakout regular season and playoff run, while Mahomes led the Chiefs to their second consecutive Super Bowl victory and third title within a five year span.

Ultimately, Mahomes adding his third Super Bowl MVP trophy and looking to embark on a three-peat in the upcoming NFL season makes him our front-runner for Sportsman of the Year. – Preezy Brown

2024 Tour de France: Romain Bardet wins Stage 1, full race results

bryson tiller tour list

Bold racing from France’s Romain Bardet and the Netherlands’ Frank van den Broek paid off as the pair got their storybrook ending to win Stage 1 of the 111th edition of the Tour de France on Saturday.

In his final year before retirement, Bardet will finally wear the coveted yellow jersey. Bardet had previously won three Tour de France stages from 2015-2017, but this opening stage win will surely be the sweetest.

After his win, Bardet told the media that the yellow jersey was the last goal of his decade-long career.

“I’m finally myself, I’m at a loss for words,” Bardet said .

Bardet was joined at the finish line by teammate van den Broek, who helped the team leader all the way to the finish line, highlighting the importance of teamwork throughout the 21-stage race.

Stage 1 of the 2024 Tour de France featured an unprecedented Grand Départ in Italy to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Ottavio Bottecchia's historic 1924 victory as the first Italian to win the Tour. Riders completed a challenging 205 km (128 miles) hilly route with seven categorized climbs and over 3,600m (11,800 feet) in elevation gain. Originating in Florence, Italy, cyclists rode through San Marino and the Apennine mountain range to reach the Italian city of Rimini on the Adriatic coast.

Bardet and van den Broek broke away from the peloton with approximately 40km to go. Although the field faced a strong headwind down the flat road into Rimini, the pair managed to withstand an encroaching peloton armed with the field’s best sprinters with just a few meters to spare.

A group of the best climbers broke away for most of the race, but Norway’s Jonas Abrahamsen did enough to earn the King of the Mountains classification and will wear the polka-dotted jersey used to recognize the best climber.

Temperatures over 90 added to the difficulty of this stage and team Astana Qazaqstan paid a heavy price. Team leader Mark Cavendish appeared to struggle with heat-related issues and dropped from the peloton early on. His teammate, Michele Gazzoli of Italy, who also seemed affected by the heat, became the first man to withdraw from the race.

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar, the favorite to win the 2024 Tour de France, set himself up well with a fourth-place finish, while Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard proved he is certainly healthy enough to be in the mix as he pursues a three-peat after sustaining serious injuries in a crash in April.
