Difference Between Tequila and Mezcal

Blue agave plant at sunset

Many people incorrectly assume tequila and mezcal are the same thing. While they are both distilled spirits made from the agave plant, there is a distinct difference between the two.

Tequila is made, by law, only from one type of agave – blue agave. It must be produced in Mexico in designated areas to legally carry the name tequila.

It is made from the cooked agave heart and fermented with specific yeast. Tequila must be distilled to at least 38% alcohol in order to carry its name.

Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from more than 30 varieties of agave. Not only blue agave, but also Agave angustifolia, known as Espadín.

It is produced in eight Mexican states and the rules are more relaxed than those for tequila production, allowing producers to experiment with different recipes and techniques. Mezcal can be distilled to anywhere between 38-55% alcohol.

In terms of taste, tequila tends to be smoother and less smoky than mezcal. Mezcal is made in small batches with a distinct flavor that includes earthy notes and a hint of smoke.

Many people consider mezcal to be the best-tasting tequila. After my tequila tour, I have to agree.

The differences between the two are not only in the production process but also in their heritage. Tequila has been around for centuries, while mezcal is a much more recent creation.

Because Cozumel is not in one of the approved regions to produce tequila, Cozumel tequila is actually mezcal.

Both have quickly become popular choices in the world of spirits, with each offering distinct and unique flavors. Regardless of which you choose, both tequila and mezcal are sure to leave you with an unforgettable experience.

About Cozumel

Cozumel is a small island with a big personality. The main town is called San Miguel de Cozumel, but most people just call the entire thing Cozumel.

Cozumel tends to be overshadowed by Cancun. Actually, the two locations are very different and offer different types of vacations . Cancun is more of a party spot while Cozumel is more laid back.

Both Cancun and Cozumel have great water sports, but Cozumel (in my opinion) has better snorkeling .

Cozumel has an international airport with direct flights from several U.S. cities. Many people fly into Cancun for their Cozumel vacation. It’s often a cheaper alternative. Getting to Cozumel from Cancun takes a couple hours but isn’t difficult.

Cozumel is a very safe destination . Since tourism is the only industry on the island, the police are dedicated to maintaining Cozumel’s safety record.

Wrap-Up: Best Tequila Tours in Cozumel

A small glass of mexcal with a spoon of sugar and a bit of cheese.

If you’re looking for the best tequila tour in Cozumel, the Mayan Village & Tequila Tour for a great authentic Mexican experience.

Whether you’re spending some time in Cozumel , or just visiting for a day on a cruise ship, tequila tours are a great way to experience the island of Cozumel.

Learn all the basics about the different types of tequila so you can really appreciate it and find your new favorite brand. As a bonus, you may learn how to make the world’s best margaritas!

They said this tequila is not available in the US but it is and for half the price. Total scam..

This tour was recommended by several people prior to my travel and when I arrived in Cozumel- I heard about the place several more times. In Cozumel they refer to the Tequila Tours as "Tequila Museums" as well. There aren't any Agave Farms on Cozumel, so this is as close as you get to having an understanding/explanation of the processing and distilling of Tequila. Although there were some super corny and touristy aspects of the tour, it was a quick and enjoyable tour about Tequila. Out guide was Manuel, he was a knowledgeable guy and a charmer. He made us feel at ease and let us taste whatever we asked for (the key here is that they want you to purchase some tequila-so indulge). The Tequila is great and the different barreling and tastes offered were really good. I do think the Tequila is overpriced, but it is up to you if you feel you want to make a purchase. I say - while you are exploring the town, why not stop in and check them out.

Well worth the time, had Luis as our guide. Very informative and helpful. All the tequila was top notch. Ask for Luis and he will take good care of you. Two thumbs up!

What a great tour. Small spot and a short tour but the guide was super - and the tequila is delicious. I was given a few extra shots in an effort to help my cough! The tequila is expensive but worth it if you want a treat- fancy sipping bottle.

I absolutely love this place , I went on a cruise just to get back here. The people here are so nice and hospitable. They are very welcoming and make you feel like a friend. This was our second visit. The tequila they sell here is very , very good. Nothing like the tequila here in the states. Our guide this time was Rodolfo, he was really nice, and entertaining. He let us taste all the tequila..... And also gave us a lesson on some quotes to say in Spanish before drinking them. They gave us a great deal, and even some parting souvenirs . He was great, I will always go back here whenever I visit Cozumel. It's worth the detour.

Our hostess was the best! We been to Cozumel 3 times and love this place, best organic margaritas we can't wait to go back again. They're close to the BnB, we stayed at, and close to airport.

Photo of Chrissy U.

This tequila tour was including as part of a separate tour we took. Glad we went. The tour was simple and pretty short. We had many different tequila samples. Our tour guide was great. The did sell tequila at the end. We bought some to support them (and because it was good) but there wasn't any pressure.

Photo of Marcus H.

I just got back from a cruise to Cozumel. Be careful, this is why. We arrive for the free tour and our tour guy/sales person did an exceptional job showing us how they make their tequila and the history behind it. Then you proceed to tasting the various different tequila's they sale their that is exclusive to Cozumel and their shop only. So my group of course indulged in the various level of quality of tequila that again "was only exclusive to Cozumel". Of course the best tasting one was the extra anjeo which cost $120. Again, this tequila is exclusive to Cozumel. I bought a bottle. Once I got home I popped the bottle open which in itself is a pain and the ass, the tops are different then anything else I've seen. Once I popped it open I shared a shot with my wife and to my surprise it tasted nothing like at the tour. It's not the same tequila or I got a bad batch but of course I'm furious. I end up googling the brand to figure out how to close the bottle and if I accidentally opened it incorrectly and guess what I found online. Los Tres Tonos can be bought in various stores in the US for around $60 and that it is in fact NOT EXCLUSIVE to Cozumel Tequila tour store. I feel ripped off and ashamed that I fell for that scam and to this day no one has emailed me back on how to close the top of the bottle. Enjoy the tour but don't buy the tequila, it's not the same and if it is you can get it cheaper in the US. Also if you go to the shops where they sell souvenirs they sell some other tequila infused with Almond that is delicious and only cost $20

Photo of Janna B.

The tour is quick but oh my goodness, the tasting is superb. I will never look at tequila the same again. We were impressed by the distinctions and amazed by the Extra Aged Los Tres Tonos tequila. We also enjoyed the guava and coffee flavored liquors. We were very glad to taste (and purchase some of the) tequila varieties.

This process requires precision and expertise to ensure the quality of the final product.

The traditional process of agave distillation in Cozumel is a fascinating and time-honored practice. It involves several steps, each crucial in creating the unique flavors of tequila. You will sample a Blanco , a Reposado , and an Añejo (aged), as well as a Tequila cream and Tequila liqueur.

Even their bottles are often lovely works of art.  Delight yourself with a sampling of these excellent and very different Tequilas while being given a detailed tour of the preparation of the most famous drink in México.  You will also learn the all-important art of drinking Tequila - no salt or lime needed!  All the while, you'll get to sample tacos and our outstanding salsa bar with six different kinds of salsas.

Responsible snorkeling in Cozumel is important to ensure the preservation of the marine ecosystem. Here are some tips for snorkeling responsibly:

  • Respect the marine life: Avoid touching or disturbing the coral reefs and marine animals. Keep a safe distance and observe them from afar.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen : Regular sunscreen can contain harmful chemicals that can damage coral reefs. Opt for reef-safe sunscreen that is free of oxybenzone and octinoxate.
  • Do not feed the fish: Feeding fish can disrupt their natural feeding patterns and can lead to dependency on humans for food. Let them find their own food sources.
  • Do not collect souvenirs: It is illegal to collect or remove any marine life or coral from the reefs in Cozumel. Leave everything as you found it to preserve the ecosystem.
  • Practice good buoyancy control: Avoid touching or standing on the coral reefs as this can cause damage. Maintain good buoyancy control and swim with a relaxed and gentle kick.

By snorkeling responsibly, you can help protect the beautiful marine life and coral reefs in Cozumel for future generations to enjoy.

What to Bring for Snorkeling in Cozumel

Bringing your own snorkel gear means that the mask will fit right and the snorkel hasn’t been in hundreds of mouths. (Yes, they disinfect them, but still … ick.)

Also, all snorkels are not created equal. Some let more water in through the top and into your mouth. It’s much better to have a snorkel designed to decrease water intake.

If you want to bring your own snorkel gear, here’s what you need:

Snorkel, mask, and fins. This is a good mid-range set with a dry-top snorkel .

Tours will provide life jackets on request. If you’re going to be snorkeling on your own, this is a good compact, inflatable snorkel vest :

A rash guard is great for protecting your skin from the sun . It will also help you use less sunscreen.

Reef-safe sunscreen will keep you and the coral protected.

Water shoes will protect your feet from rocky beaches. They’re also great for slippery boat docks.
