Luxair plans seasonal winter flights to montenegro.

Amid recent news of route launches in Europe, including that of TAP Air Portugal , one announcement is particularly surprising. Luxair announced yesterday that it would launch seasonal flights to Montenegro, originating in Luxembourg and landing in Montenegro's capital Podgorica. The route will be seasonal, operating during the winter season only. In the summer months, Luxair will not fly to Podgorica but to Tivat, which is the second of two airports in Montenegro, and just a short drive away from Podgorica.

Luxair's surprising announcement

The Cultural-information center of Montenegro in Luxembourg announced yesterday that Luxair would launch a brand new route from Luxembourg to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. The route will launch on Friday 18th December and it will run until just after the end of the winter timetable, Monday 29th March.

Flights will run every Monday and Friday, except on Christmas Day, for the duration of this period. Luxair will be sending its 76-seat Dash 8-400 aircraft to operate flights on this route. Round trips will start selling at 149 euros (176 USD).

The route was at first ridiculed

To mark the occasion, the Center said (translated):

" The conclusion of the project of creating Luxembourg - Montenegro - Luxembourg flight is evidence that the Cultural-information center of Montenegro in Luxembourg approached this initiative seriously and with dedication in order to connect better the Montenegrin diaspora with its home country, and to enable a speedier arrival home."

Interestingly, the center also added (translated):

" This route faced numerous negative comments and her planned launch was derided by some as a political and electoral idea. Despite the numerous attacks and disapproval, we want to show that the launch of this route is a purely patriotic act, which was postponed only because of the worsening epidemiological situation and a sudden rise in COVID-19 infections in Montenegro."

Summer flights will switch to Tivat

When this route launches in December, it will effectively launch as a year-round route. This is because when the last flight between Luxembourg and Podgorica completes its rotation on Monday 29th March 2021, Luxair will start operating another new route from Luxembourg to Tivat.

Tivat is a coastal Montenegrin city with an airport, Tivat Airport, located just an hour and a half away by car from Podgorica Airport. Simple Flying previously wrote about Tivat as a prospective aviation destination. Before the outbreak of COVID-19, numerous airlines scheduled new routes to Tivat.

Luxair is now the first of these airlines to be actually launching one.

Luxembourg’s national carrier Luxair will be introducing a new seasonal service to Tivat this summer., beginning from July 19th and operating once per week, each Sunday, until September 20th.

What for if the airport cannot sustain flights to CDG or AMS, let alone LUX. Better stick to the German tertiary destinations

If having 9,000 people in the diaspora warrants 2 direct weekly flights between two tiny markets then there should be flights from the ex-Yugoslavia to most cities in Europe.

There are more reasons. Montenegro attracts international business people with low taxes while Luxembourg attracts international businesses with low taxes. That should probably generate some business travel between the two countries.

The first planes from Luxemburg of the Luxair company for this season will land in Montenegro today.

The Cultural and Information Center of Montenegro in Luxembourg announced that German Airways will operate an Embraer 190 with a capacity of 100 passengers.

“They will travel to Montenegro four times – twice to Tivat and twice to Podgorica ,” the statement added.

For Tivat in the period from May 6 to September 30, on Saturdays and Tuesdays, and for Podgorica in the period from July 1 to September 23, on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Reservations can be made on the luxair.lu website.

Taormina is one of the most beautiful places in Italy. It is perched on a natural terrace and has Mount Etna as its backdrop. The Greek theatre, Corso Umberto, narrow streets lined with boutiques and the many taverns all give the town its unique charm. Mazzaro and Letojanni are two other popular seaside resorts, not far from Taormina. The beaches below Taormina can be reached by cable car or minibus. Distance from Catania airport: 60 km.

This small village overlooking Taormina from Mount Tauro offers a breathtaking view of the sea and Mount Etna. It was built around a castle dating back to the Norman period and is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Sicily. Castelmola's layout and authentic little street have retained its medieval character and make this village well worth a visit. Distance to Catania airport: approx. 65 km.

Giardini Naxos

At Cape Schiso, excavations have uncovered the ruins of the first Greek colony in Sicily, as well as the remains of tombs dating back to the Bronze Age. Today, Giardini Naxos is a popular seaside town bordered by long sandy and gravelly beaches. Distance from Catania airport: 55 km. 

The city is a very important archaeological site, with ruins of monuments, artworks and statues that offer a complete picture of its history. Founded in the 8th century BC on the Island of Ortigia, Syracuse very quickly became an important city, as evidenced by remnants from the Greek and Roman periods. After the Roman occupation, the city fell into decline. Distance to Catania airport : approx. 68 km.

This charming resort has been a popular holiday destination since the 1960s, and is beloved for its long pebbled beaches bordered by a crystal-clear sea. During the summer months it boasts a lively nightlife, especially along the promenade, with restaurants, bars and shops open until late. Distance to Catania airport: approx. 65 km.

Campofelice di Roccella

This charming village is full of natural and historical treasures, such as the remains of a castle from which you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the valley and the beautiful, long beach. The land is also very fertile, making it possible to grow a wide variety of fruit and vegetables here. Distance from Palermo airport: 85 km.

This seaside town sits on the edge of a green hillside, bordered by a beautiful white sandy beach. Cefalù boasts a historic centre with an impressive cathedral, as well as a range of cultural attractions. You'll also find plenty of restaurants, shops and craft workshops here, all in typical Sicilian style. Distance from Palermo airport: 112 km.

This pretty little seaside town near Cefalù boasts a long, fine sandy beach. It also maintains close links with the land, with the manna harvest still celebrated here at Finale di Pollina in June. Distance from Palermo airport: approx. 100 km.

Castiglione Di Sicilia

This charming little village is perched on a hill between Randazzo and Taormina, in the heart of the Alcantara river valley. Lauria Castle dominates Castiglione di Sicilia from the top of its promontory. Distance to the airport : 72 km.

This former small fishing village has gradually grown into a popular seaside resort. Situated on the shores of the Gulf of Castellamare, it's an excellent base from which to explore the region's wealth of attractions, including the beautiful medieval castle, the Zingaro nature reserve and the picturesque village of Scopello. Distance from Palermo airport: 15 km.

Must-do & Must-see – our suggestions

Sicily is dotted with small islands all around its coastline. Some are very popular with tourists, while others are a little more secret. Favignana, off the coast of Trapani , is part of the Aegadian Islands and is a delightful change of scenery. With its unsuspected coves and translucent waters, it has an other-worldly feeling. Just hop on the ferry to get there and then pick up a bike, so you can take the time to stop wherever you like and savour the moment. 

Arancini are a delicious  food whose shape is reminiscent of little oranges. The traditional version of this fried rice ball is topped with tomato sauce and minced meat. It's a real institution in Sicily! You can eat it whenever you like - often standing up in the street, with your hands! These cheap and delicious snacks are usually homemade by expert hands.

Sicily is home to some magical places where, for a moment, time seems to stand still... The Marsala saltworks are one of them! As night falls, the horizon lights up in an extraordinary range of colours. Enjoy the unique spectacle of pink flamingos resting on the water in front of white salt dunes and still-functioning windmills. It's a truly breathtaking sunset!

The Scala dei Turchi (Stairway of the Turks) is a true miracle of nature, formed by erosion and the wind, which has sculpted remarkable sinuous curves into a white limestone cliff. This impressive, immaculate rock, which takes the form of a staircase with endless steps, contrasts with the turquoise blue of the sea.

Taormina's ancient theatre has been used for performances since Greek times. This exceptional venue with its impeccable acoustics is still used as a stage for plays, concerts and even ballets. Admire the spectacle of nature and the grandeur of the art under the starry Sicilian sky, with a magical view of Mount Etna in the background.

The poet Pindare said that Agrigento was ‘the most beautiful town ever built by man’. Visit the Valley of the Temples (one of the best-preserved sites in the world).

Agrigento is known throughout the world for its magnificent Valley of the Temples and the sacred area of ancient Akragas, one of the largest colonies of Magna Graecia. The Valley of the Temples includes some wonderful remnants from the ancient world: the Temple of Hercules, the majestic Temple of Concordia (one of the best-preserved temples in the Greek world), the unfinished Temple of Olympian Zeus – the largest Doric construction in the western world – the Temple of Hera Lacinia and the extensive Hellenic and Roman district where it’s possible to see dwellings and houses with Hellenic-style patios with their well-preserved coloured mosaics and elegant mural paintings. These monuments all date from the 5th century B.C. In addition to quintessential archaeological treasures, the National Archaeology Museum also houses the famous Ephebos, an original Greek statue from 470 B.C. The 11th-century cathedral and the San Spiritu monastery, with its interior decorated in wonderful Baroque stucco, are the most significant monuments from the modern era.

Etna/Taormina

Called ‘Mongibello’, or ‘Gebel’ by the Arabs (meaning ‘mountain’), the highest volcano in Europe (3,345 m) is still active. It is a magnificent natural spectacle and source of great pride to the Sicilians. Continuation towards Taormina, the pearl of Sicily, with a visit to its Greco-Roman theatre offering you a sumptuous view of the coast and Etna.

You will cross the hinterland of Sicily before arriving at Etna, the biggest volcano in Europe, which is still active. This pride of the Sicilian people is a magnificent natural spectacle. The bus takes you to an altitude of 1,900 m. Afterwards, you will have 2 to 3 hours of free time to climb by cable-car up to the highest point at 3,300 m, if you wish. Not included in the price. Followed by departure to Taormina, a wonderful town at the foot of Etna with a splendid view of the whole bay. Free time to visit the town and do some shopping. Don’t forget to visit the famous Greco-Roman theatre! Return via Messina.

Lipari/Vulcano

You'll leave in the morning towards Milazzo to take the boat to Lipari, visit the island, then continue on to Vulcano, one of the most interesting islands on the Aeolian archipelago. Visit to archaeological sites and bathing on the black beach.

The Aeolian Islands (or Lipari) are located off the north-east coast of Sicily. Their name comes from Aeolus, the god of wind. Seven of the islands are inhabited: Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea and Stromboli. Vulcano, the closest to Sicily, has a surface area of 20 km² and is made up of three volcanoes. The island is renowned for its geological and volcanic beauty. Milazo is a port on the north-east coast of Sicily and is reached in one hour by road. From there you will board a boat to Vulcano. The crossing takes approximately 1 hour 30 min. The walk to the Large Crater (386 m) is very interesting, as is the tour of the island by boat (additional charge). However, if perhaps you prefer to take sulphur baths and enjoy a swim in water warmed by underwater springs, then a pleasant day spent in Vulcano offers just that.

Palermo/Monreale

Depart for Monreale, near Palermo, visit to the 12th-century Norman cathedral, with its perfectly preserved mosaics, and the Benedictine monastery. Free time in the town for a stroll or a coffee in one of the town squares, and perhaps the option of visiting one of the gardens with unobstructed views of the valley of Conca d’Oro. Continue to Palermo, capital of the island located at the foot of Mont Pellegrino, to discover the treasures of this wonderful city.

Morning visit to Monreale, a marvellous town 8 km from Palermo on Monte Caputo. You will visit the magnificent cathedral there that is decorated with more than 6,000 m² of golden mosaics. Afterwards, there will be free time to enjoy a quintessential Italian coffee, an optional visit, or a walk through the gardens of the town. Afterwards, departure for Palermo, where you will have a guided tour of the city through its historic centre (Avenue de la Libertà, Massimo and Garibaldi Theatre, les Quattre Canti). On foot, you will visit the San Giovanni degli Eremiti church built on the remnants of an Arab mosque, the Cappella Palatina, a wonderful example of Arab-Byzantine style, and the magnificent Arab-Norman cathedral in Palermo. Free time for lunch and shopping. Optional visit to the Capuchin Catacombs with 8,000 mummified remains, including the exceptionally well-preserved mummy of a child who died in 1920, Rosalia Lombardo.

Syracuse and Noto

The city is a very important archaeological site, with ruins of monuments, artworks and statues that offer a complete picture of its history. Founded in the 8th century BC on the island of Ortigia, Syracuse very quickly became an important city, as evidenced by remnants from the Greek and Roman periods. After the Roman occupation, the city fell into decline. Visit the Fountain of Aretusa, the cathedral, the archaeological site of Neopolis with its latomies (quarries used as prisons), the famous grotto known as the "Ear of Dionysus", the Greek theatre and the Roman amphitheatre. Head to Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful towns in Sicily. This tourist destination is famous for its historical and Baroque architecture. Return in the late afternoon.
