Unfortunately, it is Closed until further notice. When it was open it was a great family place to go and learn about the Florida Everglades and our indigenous animals. The Swamp water Cafe has reopened and has been remodeled. Great place to stop and have a bite if you are passing through. It is right up against an open area of Everglades where you can see animals and birds in their natural habitat.

Field trip with my students. We have a great time. The airboat ride and tour was awesome. We only saw a few small gators but it was relaxing being on the boat.

Terrible ! We drove 1 1/2 hours to get there and it has been closed since Covid and they still have a recording they are open and operating hours ! We wasted 3 hours of our vacation because they don't care about taking their site down and from I heard at the restaurant it happens all the time that is still open at the site !

This place is awesome! It's a ways out for us (we're city folks from West Miramar) so we had to drive for a little over an hour but it's truly worth it! The staff are friendly and well-informed and the landscape is gorgeous. It's uncanny that land like this, untouched, exists in South Florida!! The wildlife are calm and serene and you can tell they are well-cared for. The airboat ride is both educational and fun (my 8 year old said it was his favorite part) and the buggy ride is bumpy but allows you to see an entirely different part of the land. The Snake show was interesting, learned about venomous snakes native to Florida, and saw them as they were being handled too! The Critters show was both interactive and fun (I held a baby alligator, petted a skunk and fed a deer). Kids and adults both will enjoy this place!!

**Groupon has a discount for tickets. If you are looking to do something off the beaten path, or to experience old Florida... this is a good place to head out to. I'm partial to the Everglades and river of grass since I grew up down here and remember the old days when there wasn't so many buildings. I recommend heading out early to Billie Swamp so you can take your time and enjoy each detail. To get there, you basically fill up your gas tank, and head West on alligator alley if you are coming from the east, or head east if you are coming from the west such as Naples. The exit is definitely closer to the east (Fort Lauderdale side). When you get off the exit with the huge sign directing you for Billie Swamp as well as the last stop for gas, check out the canal aka large pond on your right side. Usually there is a extremely large beautiful alligator in there. Easily a 14 foot well fed Gator to be a matter of fact. If he isn't there, don't worry you will see plenty of gators on the way out to Billie Swamp. Just pay attention to the canals on the winding snake road as you drive out to Billies 2200 acres. Billie Swamp is names after a Seminole Indian woman named "Billie". She stood up to the soldiers during the Seminole was. Just before you make a quick left following the sign telling you Billie swamp is around the corner, there is a yellow building on your right called Sweet Tooth. If you are lucky it will be open. Swing in there, they great ice cream! If you rather continue to Billie Swamp, don't worry they have the Swamp Cafe which opens at 7am. The park is open at 9am, and the airboat and swamp buggy tours start at 10am. You want to spend the weekend out there, they have chickees that you can stay in either on the waterfront, as a couple or a large one for a group. There is no electricity, so bring your flashlights, towels and an open mind. They also have a night tour too if you are staying out there. The airboat tour is short. Only 20 minutes, wish it were longer. The buggy tour is an hour. I can go on and on, however just go check it out! Enjoy!

This was a very interesting place. When I read all the reviews I wanted to give a try here, and oh boy it was a great decision. It's a small zoo, but you will get the best experience. I would highly recommend to buy a day pass so that you can experience all the attractions. My favorite part of the visit was the critter show, where you will be able to pet some interesting things, like crocodile, alligator, skunk ( yes skunk, soft and cute one), New York rat.. very interesting fun place!

I spent the day and night here at Billie Swamp Safari and had fun for the most part. There were some very nice aspects to this place and a few parts that were okay.....maybe not as much to see and explore like a full blown zoo, but for visiting for the first time.....it was a good experience. Billie Swamp Safari is located in the center of South Florida in Clewiston. For me coming from Boynton Beach, it was an 88 mile drive, about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Park hours were from 11am - 6pm. There are prices for each individual activity, but that's pointless. Basically for the day, an adult was $50 and a child ages 4 - 12 was $36. Children 3 and under were free. Included in the price of admission..... - Swamp Buggy Tour - 60 minutes long - ran hourly from 11am - 5pm....eh, sort of boring and not too scenic. - Airboat Ride - every half hour from 10am - 5pm.....too short - only 20 minutes, but fun while it lasted. - Critter Show - 12:15 and 3:15pm only - cool show where we were able to touch and pet some animals. - Snake Show - 2:15 and 4:15pm only - interesting show. You learn about snakes. At the end they let you pet a snake. One awkward thing - the gentleman who handled the snakes and performed the show had a tip jar out. Ugh. -Animal Exhibits were open - 11am - 4pm. Also, upon researching Billie Swamp Safari, you could spend the night here camping out! That was the best part of our visit! So...we had the entire day to enjoy the attractions, and then for the evening, not only did we bring food to camp out and cook dinner, but we rented a "dorm chickee"! Well, at first we rented a "tent chickee", but when we realized how secluded they were "off the beaten path" from the rest of camp, we changed accommodations to a dorm chickee which was situated right next to picnic tables and our campfire. This was much more accessible. Also nearby, they had showers and sinks to wash up. Funny....for the evening I visited, my family were the only ones spending the night along the grounds. I know it was summertime and brutally hot outside...though maybe folks prefer nights in the Florida winter here when it's cooler. Regardless, a gentleman helped start our campfire before he exited the grounds. Then, we washed up. We brought hamburgers and hot dogs ahead of time, along with smore's cookies, marshmallows and chocolate. The cookout and campfire was terrific! Our dorm, featured 10 beds with sheets and bedding....yet we only needed 6 beds. The dorm/hut was relatively clean and roomy. It was certainly good enough for us sleeping for just 1 night. The tent chickee was $65 for 2 people. Since there was 6 of us, we upgraded to the dorm chickee for $120. A great deal and fun to spend the night camping out under the stars. In the morning, we gathered our belongings and headed home. Also, I'd just like to briefly mention how we navigated our time exploring the park here..... -Upon arrival at 10am, we took photos outside the Billie Swamp entrance. -We walked around the animals exhibit area which featured some unique creatures. We then bought our tickets inside the gift shop. -First at 11am, we ventured out on the Swamp Buggy Tour for 1 hour. This ride was just average/mediocre - not much to see. -While waiting for the Critter Show to start at 12:15pm, we bought $5 worth of gator food and fed the alligators from an overlooking deck. This was fun and my niece and nephew enjoyed this. -The 12:15pm Critter Show was interactive. They let a deer roam free. We got to pet a skunk and baby gator. -The Airboat Ride was next. Exciting to ride and a nice breeze, but 20 minutes was too short. -We then watched the adult gators being fed in their pens. Informative watch and remarkable how the gators were handled by a professional. -We ate lunch at the cafeteria. Pretty standard all - American food. -Next, we bought food (in the gift shop) and went to the animal petting area and fed horses, cows and goats. -We bought more food (like $2 a stick) and ventured inside a cage where birds flew onto our arms and nibbled at our sticks. -Finally, we ventured over to the 4:15pm Snake Show. Just an alright show. I was hoping for more interaction. In all, there was enough for us to see and do for our first time visiting. After the Snake Show, we grabbed our belongings, checked out our dorm chickee, casually took it easy, got ready for dinner, and prepared our campfire as the park was closed for the day. Overall, combining the day activities with camping out for the night at Billie Swamp Safari made for a fun, family experience. For anyone who hasn't discovered this place, I'd recommend checking it out. We appreciated sleeping outdoors for the evening....sort of getting out of our comfort zones. It made for a memorable 24 hour Saturday - Sunday adventure.

I've never had more fun at an adult field trip before. I felt like a kid again -- only this time paying attention. But seriously from start to finish 8 to 5pm I enjoyed myself so much and learning more about the Seminole tribe. If you are a history buff like me, or want to know more about the Everglades and native lands this is it for you. I wouldn't recommend if you have toddlers and below because I know my niece gets antsy after a full day but there really is entertainment for everyone. The airboat was awesome, saw about 10 gators! The wildlife shows and then the museum--their staff is A+. They are so knowledgeable I really am glad I came and can't wait to bring family from out of town. They are a little further out than other tour groups but well worth it to get the bang for the buck. Their customs are beautiful and im so happy I got to learn all that I did . They are way beyond casinos and duty free tobacco. The husband and wife tour guide duo (I forget their names) were excellent. So many cool items at the gift shop too. If you're debating don't hesitate to come here!

Arrived at Billie's on a late morning/early afternoon Sunday. We finished a tournament that morning and opted to find something entertaining to do with our kids. Leaving from Naples back to Davie, Billies showed up and made this day a great family treat. I searched Groupon and got lucky. We purchased a pack for 4. This included the air boat ride, petting zoo and a snake show. This was the best bang for your buck. The other option included another boat ride. The kids loved the airboat ride and looking at all the gators. The air boat captain was knowledgeable and new his domain! We all learned a little something so it was definitely educational. Petting zoo is limited but still great for the price. The snake show was also a nice edition to end the trip. I wanted some gator tail but left without fulfilling the craving. Maybe next time and I'll fool the kids with saying they are chicken tenders!

RATED THE #1 OUTDOOR ACTIVITY IN LAKELAND, FLORIDA!

a drawing of a person

Our tour guide, was great! He was knowledgeable and funny. Awesome assortment of animals from antelope to zebra and many in between. We got to feed many of the animals which was interesting and fun. Great opportunity to take close up pictures of the animals. Our daughter also enjoyed feeding the lemurs. It's a fun way to spend a few hours!

a screen shot of an animal

The safari was exciting from the beginning to the end. We enjoyed feeding the camels the most. Seeing the ostrich and the huge eggs they lay was amazing. The cheetah was breathtaking. Although the water buffaloes were huge, they were quite gentle and easy to feed. Our tour guide Jan was very knowledgeable. I look forward to doing this again!

a close up of a sign

Our Safari ride was enjoyable and very informative. Our guide, Art, was extraordinarily knowledgeable about all of the animals we saw. My grand children and I really enjoyed being able to feed many of the animals. It was a wonderful experience and I am telling all of my friends that it is a wonderful place to take their grand children.

a close up of a building

We loved this tour. Definitely a hidden gem in central Florida. J.J was friendly and knowledgeable and my 90 year-old father-in-law was able to sit comfortably in the shaded open-air vehicle and enjoy every aspect of the tour. If you're able, feed the Lemurs! It's an optional add-on activity but lots of fun. Would recommend this place to anyone!

a drawing of a face

JJ, our guide, was so knowledgeable about the animals. We were able to feed many treats to the animals as we travelled along on the open air (but covered) safari bus, which was great for interacting and viewing the animals. It was our favorite part of our vacation! Would definitely come here again. Lots of fun for people of all ages.

Billie Swamp Safari

Billie Swamp Safari

With airboat and swamp buggy rides as well as interpretation of native species, Billie Swamp Safari is a nature-based attraction providing immersion into the Big Cypress Swamp.

Big Cypress Seminole Reservation       ( 26.322398,-81.052849 )

When the swamp buggy headed straight for the canal, it startled everyone in the high, bouncing vehicle, including me.

Airboats zip down these canals and I didn’t think our driver, Kat, could power that swamp monster through the muck and keep us afloat, but she did.

Expanse of water in road

About the Park

Billie Swamp Safari provides an immersion into the Big Cypress Swamp, ancestral home of the Seminole Tribe since the 1800s.

Everything is focused on nature. The grounds include numerous animal displays with native wildlife.

Large alligators in an enclosure

There is a Herpetarium with Florida snakes and some of the biggest alligators you’ll ever see.

The Swamp Critters Show showcases more cuddly critters like armadillo, baby alligators, and snapping turtles.

Woman holding small alligator

The Swamp Buggy Tour winds along trails through the dense forest and floodplain swamps.

From the high perch it provides, expect to spot more than native species roaming the swamp.

Horned black buffalos in a water hole

We saw Asian water buffalo and ostriches along with the expected feral hogs, raccoons, alligators, and hundreds of wading birds.

Along the way, the tour guide fills you in on the flora and fauna of Big Cypress and the history of the Seminole.

View of water in forest below a railing

Ours shared interesting tidbits tied to the landscape, such as the best places for Florida panthers to take a perch.

Bumping and bouncing, the Swamp Buggy Tour is a counterpoint to the smooth Airboat Tours, which glide at high speed across open water.

Airboat tossing up water in swamp

The airboat guide makes stops in the swamp at key points, especially where its possible to get up close to an alligator.

For tamer fun, an easy nature trail follows a boardwalk through a cypress and pop ash swamp.

boardwalk into cypress dome

Visitors can stay overnight in an authentic chickee, the Seminole version of a grass hut, and sit around a campfire listening to storytellers.

It’s a very different and authentic experience, one that will leave you with an appreciation of the Seminole and the habitats of the Big Cypress Swamp.

The Seminole Indians have 2,200 acres at Billie Swamp Safari, Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation in Clewiston,Florida. The Reservation is southwest of Jensen Beach and takes about 2 1/2 -3 hours. The Seminole Tribe runs this safari park where there are many attractions available to the visitor. Billie Swamp Safari is a big south Florida attraction. There is an airboat ride that whisks you through the swamps as you see alligators, heron, egrets, turtles, and other wildlife. The Swamp Buggy Eco Tour drives through the wetlands and brush and there are wild pigs, raccoons, ostriches, wild turkeys, water buffalo, and other wild animals. You can walk the nature trail and see more of the reservation and the Florida everglades foliage. Visit the alligator pit and take in the show and don’t miss the snake & reptile demonstration. You can stay overnight in a rustic chickee on a Seminole Chickee stay. There is no electricity or running water but the reservation has shower and bathroom facilities. Dine on Indian treats (alligator bits, frog legs) or burgers or hot dogs at the Swamp Water Cafe. Enjoy the Butterfly Garden. Watch the Seminole ladies sew traditional Seminole garments on their Singer sewing machines. Stop in at the gift shop and buy a souvenir or two. I enjoyed the Safari and felt it was well-run and informative. All I ever hear about this attraction is positive. I’ll visit again. Try to get there. It’s a fun trip! Billie swamp safari.

1 star rating

Billie Swamp Safari is an up-close-and-personal view of the Seminole Indians' 2,200-acre Big Cypress Reservation. There are daily tours into reservation wetlands, hardwood hammocks, and areas where wildlife (seemingly strategically placed deer, water buffalo, bison, wild hogs, ornery ostriches, rare birds, and alligators) reside. Tours are provided aboard swamp buggies, customized motorized vehicles specially designed to provide visitors with an elevated view of the frontier while they comfortably ride through the wetlands and cypress heads. The more adventurous may want to take a fast-moving airboat ride or trek a nature trail. Airboat rides run about 20 minutes, while swamp-buggy tours last about an hour. A stop at an alligator farm reeks of Disney, but the kids won't care. You can stay overnight in a native Tiki hut start at $40 per night if you're really looking to immerse yourself in the culture.

Florida Gators

Gymnastics seat selection frequently asked questions.

The seat upgrade/relocation process allows season ticket holders to move their seats during their allocated appointment window .  The below FAQ should answer most questions regarding this process.

General Information

  • This program enables season ticket holders to select their own seats in a transparent and convenient way. By utilizing this technology, ticket holders will be able to take ownership of their seating assignment. Each customer will be able to establish his or her own preferences (seating location, low or high, aisle or middle, etc.) and choose accordingly.
  • All account holders who have placed their 2025 Gymnastics deposit will have the opportunity to participate in the seat selection process based on your Loyalty Point System priority ranking.
  • Seat selection appointment times will be assigned to those with a deposit placed, in order of your Loyalty Point System priority ranking after the May 30 th deadline. Your appointment time represents the earliest time that you can access the system to select seats. Your selection window opens at your appointment time, and you may then select seats at any time until the selection process is complete in early July. There is no time limit; however, please keep in mind that others will be able to select seats as their selection windows open, so we encourage you to choose your seats as close to your assigned time as possible.
  • After the Loyalty Point System priority ranking is finalized following the May 30th deadline, season ticket holders will be placed in order by Perfect 10 status and then by priority points. After that is complete all remaining seats will be available for sale to all Gator Fans.
  • It is important to us to have a system in place that properly rewards those who support Gator Athletics. We appreciate the support from all of our season ticket holders. Our loyal and generous donors have supported Gator Athletics with resources and generous contributions. This support should be reflected in seating selection.
  • You will only be able to select the number of seats that is equal to the number of deposits that you have placed. Any additional seats can be added at the end of the seat selection process at the beginning of July.
  • Season ticket qualifications will not change. You will be able to order and select as many seats as you qualify for based upon the number of deposits that you placed.
  • Season ticket holders will be sent seat selection window information via email.

Seat Selection

  • The seat selection will utilize the Ticketmaster Interactive Seat Map to assist in the seat selection process. This online system allows season ticket holders to choose seats during a specific window of time. Each season ticket holder will have a scheduled window of time in which to log-in to their online ticket account and choose their seats. Appointment times will be assigned based on the donor priority point system. Ticket holders with the highest point totals will select first. Appointment times will be staggered, every 30 minutes. The biggest advantage to this entire process is that the Gator Booster/Season Ticket Holder now has the ability to upgrade or change their own seats and not have the Gator Ticket Office do it for them in year's past based on a list of seat preferences.
  • You will access the live selection site by logging into your Florida Account Manager with your email and password.
  • No. Every season ticket holder already has an existing account. Visit FloridaGators.com/myaccount and click "Forgot My Password" if it is your first time logging in. We recommend trying to log in prior to your appointment time to ensure that you have the correct log in information. If you have any trouble logging in, please contact the Gator Ticket Office at (352) 375-4683.
  • Try using your email address and your password to log in to your Florida Account Manager. To make sure you are in the correct account, you should see your season ticket locations under "Manage My Tickets/My Upcoming Events." To change the email address we have on file, click "Edit My Profile" on the left. You may also call the Gator Ticket Office at (352) 375-4683 to confirm your email address over the phone.
  • Once your appointment window opens, you can look at live inventory and make your seat selections up until the process is complete in early July. You do not have to choose seats right away; however, we do recommend selecting as close to your appointment time as you can. Approximately every 30 minutes, another small group of ticket holders will enter the process and be able to select their seats.
  • Your assigned seating window reflects the earliest time you may log in to select seats. Those who miss their scheduled appointment time may log in to self-select seats at any time after their appointment time has started. Please keep in mind that if you miss your scheduled appointment time, other season ticket holders may be choosing seats at their assigned times which will affect seating availability.
  • Browser: Internet Explorer 9.0 , Mozilla Firefox 4.0 , Safari 5.1 , and Chrome 15
  • Yes. Many libraries have free computer access and you can always ask a family member or friend to help you with this process. However, we highly encourage you to select your own seats through Florida Account Manager, as this will give you the most control in making your selections. In doing so, you will be able to see exactly what seats are available. If you are unable to access the internet at your appointment time, you may give your account information to a delegate or you may select seats over the phone or in person at the Gator Ticket Office.
  • Yes. If you want to designate another person to choose seats for you, it is your responsibility to provide that person with your account ID, password and seating preferences.
  • No. You can browse available inventory for as long as you would like after your seat selection window opens. But, you may only complete the actual seat selection process one time. Once you have finalized your seat selection, you will not be able to log back in and alter your seat selection. If you wish to check the availability of other seating locations, feel free to call the Gator Ticket Office at (352) 375-4683.

Special Groups

  • With the online selection process, each individual will be given an appointment time for seating based on their respective donor priority point ranking. Each group member needs to coordinate his or her selection with the appointment time of the lowest ranked person within their group; and, at that time, each group member can log into the online system and choose their seats together.  NOTE:  Since all seats will be selected online, each person in the group will need access to a computer when coordinating the location of their seating location to make their selections simultaneously. Each group member can log in at their assigned time and check the availability of seats, having the opportunity to make their selections at that point, should they wish to forgo their group seating based on the lowest ranked person's selection time within the group.
  • All fans who placed a deposit, even returning season ticket holders, will be required to select their seat locations for the 2025 season.
  • Individuals requiring seating in wheelchair accessible rows, or specific seating to meet other disability needs, should call the Gator Ticket Office at (352) 375-4683 before or during their assigned seat selection window for assistance with selecting seats from the available inventory that meet their specific needs. If you have any further questions regarding disabled seating, feel free to contact the Gator Ticket Office at any time.
  • If you have any further questions, you may  email us . If you wish to speak with a customer service representative, you can contact the Gator Ticket Office at (352) 375-4683 or Gator Boosters at (352) 375-4683 ext. 5000 for additional information. Our offices are open Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

How Ron DeSantis found a home in Florida’s swamp

Image: Republican presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks during a campaign event, on May 30, 2023, in Clive, Iowa.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Ron DeSantis promised to drain the swamp in Tallahassee. Instead, over more than four years as governor, he has reconfigured the swamp to suit his political needs and shielded it from Florida’s famous sunshine.

In anticipation of his 2024 presidential bid, he pushed the Legislature to change Florida's resign-to-run law. He revised state policy so he could transfer $80 million in campaign cash to a federal political committee. And just after his official announcement last month, his administration pressured state legislators and lobbyists to aid his presidential campaign while they awaited his decisions on pet projects in the budget.

His use of state power to aid his presidential ambitions hasn’t come as a surprise to Florida political insiders who have watched him use the tools of governance to advance his agenda and ideology.

“He reshaped the swamp in his image,” said David Jolly, a former Republican who served in Congress with DeSantis and hails from the same part of the state.

Now, as DeSantis campaigns for the presidency, he’s renewing his vow to drain a swamp — this time in Washington — and is trying to convince conservative voters that he is better suited than former President Donald Trump to shrink government and make it more accountable to the public.

"I can tell you, Washington, D.C., isn't producing much other than mountains of debt and loads of hot air," DeSantis said at a campaign stop in Laconia, New Hampshire, last week. "These elites, they don't want to enact an agenda to represent our interests. They want to enact an agenda that is imposed from on high."

Implicit in his assessment is the notion that Trump didn't do much to permanently change Washington's culture. DeSantis is betting that Republican voters will see his sweeping changes to nearly all of Florida's institutions as evidence that he is a better choice than Trump to retrofit the federal government.

In a 2018 campaign mailer sent to Floridians that featured a picture of him and Trump giving the thumbs up sign, he made a very specific promise: He would “drain the swamp.”

The onetime allies — Trump's endorsement was key to DeSantis' victory in the 2018 primary for governor — are now archenemies, with Trump leading by wide margins in national polling and DeSantis running a clear second.

The support DeSantis is getting from top Republican donors and pillars of the conservative establishment, including the anti-tax Club for Growth, has opened him up to criticism from Trump's camp that he is indebted to elites. In March, for example, Donald Trump Jr. called DeSantis a “puppet of the swamp.”

While DeSantis hasn't been as aggressive attacking Trump, he has notably said Republicans need to “end the culture of losing.” That's a not-so-veiled shot at Trump for GOP disappointments in the 2018, 2020 and 2022 elections, the latter of which included the defeats of several of Trump's hand-picked Senate candidates.

As a back-bench congressman from 2013 until he resigned in 2018, DeSantis had little legislative success. In his best-selling book, "The Courage to Be Free," he cast himself as a reformer beset by institutional inertia and the media in the Washington "swamp."

“The media treats reformers, especially those on the right, with hostility, usually targeting them with hit pieces,” he wrote, eliding the possibility that colleagues simply didn’t agree with his legislative proposals in Congress. But as governor of Florida, he had much more power to act unilaterally and to pressure Republican legislators to advance his agenda.

Now, as DeSantis vows to clean up Washington if he's elected president, his claim to be a reformer is getting fresh scrutiny. A flurry of recent laws, administrative actions and political maneuvers serves his White House ambitions, with a less direct benefit for fellow Floridians, according to political insiders in the state.

That raises questions about whether he truly made good on a vow that is central to his argument for why he should win the Republican nomination and the presidency.

Reform record in Congress

DeSantis’ three terms in Congress were defined by moves like helping found the Freedom Caucus, which advocated for small government, and sponsoring the “Drain the Swamp Act” to toughen lobbying bans for former members.

DeSantis has long cast himself in the role of reformer, but in the past the desired changes were geared toward limiting government authority.

In Washington, he introduced several dead-on-arrival constitutional amendments to curb lawmakers’ benefits, including one that would have forced members of Congress to apply all laws to themselves.

Regardless of the reason, his efforts to amend the Constitution failed — as did almost all of the measures he wrote to alter the law. In the one case of partial success, he drafted an amendment to prevent the IRS from holding conferences. The House adopted the amendment, but it was watered down in negotiations with the Senate, and the tax-collection agency kept its power to convene officials.

Boosting his presidential bid

Just before DeSantis officially launched his presidential campaign, the Republican-dominated Legislature rewrote Florida’s resign-to-run law , ensuring he didn’t have to step down as governor to run for president. It also rolled back transparency laws, so the public can no longer track his use of state planes or see who attended meetings in the Governor’s Mansion — which in recent weeks has become a venue for DeSantis to court political donors.

Since DeSantis launched his presidential bid last month, state employees have pressured lobbyists to donate to it and leaned on legislators — awaiting his final say on their budget priorities — to endorse him.

DeSantis’ political operation also transferred more than $80 million to a super PAC backing his presidential campaign after his administration changed long-standing guidelines that said such transfers weren't allowed.

Jolly, who has since left the Republican Party, pointed in particular to the DeSantis team's pushing for endorsements and contributions while the state budget sat under his line-item veto pen.

“What screams swamp more than that?” Jolly asked. “You send me your money and you send me your endorsements and I’ll give you state money in return.”

Punishing political foes

DeSantis’ use of state government extends far beyond making changes that directly benefit his political fortunes. He has also increasingly wielded his power to achieve policy ends — and punish his political foes.

At times, that has come through the government's regulation of private businesses and the free market in ways that have made some other Republicans uneasy .

The clearest example is DeSantis' fight with Disney, which drew his ire when it released a statement in March 2022 opposing legislation to ban discussion of sexual orientation and gender identify in classrooms up until third grade. The DeSantis-friendly Legislature then removed Disney's long-standing ability to self-govern and installed a DeSantis-appointed board over a special district that operates a significant chunk of the company's Florida operations.

The move received some pushback for violating Republican Party principles against government interference in the free market, but DeSantis argued the use of the state was warranted.

"Does an absence of government necessarily mean free market?" DeSantis asked in an interview last month with The American Conservative. "I would say, sometimes, absence of government could just devolve into corporatism, and I think too many people on the right have basically been corporatists over the years."

DeSantis' office responded to a request for comment for this article by sending a link to the interview. Press secretary Jeremy Redfern said it explained "his philosophy on conservative governance."

Rewiring institutions

DeSantis hasn't only rewired state institutions; in some cases, he has expanded the scope and the power of the government he leads.

At his urging, legislators also funded a program that led to Florida's paying to fly 50 asylum-seekers, most of them Venezuelan, to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. After a lawsuit challenged the legality of the program, DeSantis pushed legislators to change the law during a special legislative session.

He also attracted national attention when his election investigation office arrested 20 people with former felony convictions who illegally voted in the 2020 election. They were arrested even though state officials had told them they could vote. Despite the criticism, l egisl a tors increase d the office's budget .

DeSantis also suspended Tampa-area State Attorney Andrew Warren, a Democrat, in large part because he said he wouldn't prosecute cases under a 15-week abortion ban DeSantis signed last year. A federal judge later said the move was u nconstitutional but upheld the suspension.

“He is an authoritarian, right-wing populist who bullies and punishes local government, private businesses and individuals whenever they displease him,” said Mac Stipanovich, who worked in Republican politics in the state for decades but is now an avowed Never Trumper and harsh critic of DeSantis. “He wars against an independent press because they are an impediment to him being able to work his will unchecked. He is suborning the judiciary with blatantly ideological appointees. And he has so cowed the Legislature that the Russian Duma acts with greater independence.

“If Donald Trump is an American Mussolini with all of his anti-democratic bluster, then DeSantis is a Florida Franco,” he added. “Calculation, colorless, humorless, brutal and equally anti-democratic.”

Acting without the Legislature's input

Some of DeSantis’ most controversial reforms were executed unilaterally without input from legislators. He has increasingly used the historically low-key administrative rulemaking process to make changes connected to high-profile political issues that have stoked intense support from his backers and vocal pushback from opponents.

His administration’s medical regulatory boards have signed off on rule changes banning gender-affirming care for minors, which legislators months later codified in state law. On Tuesday, a judge issued a preliminary injunction temporarily blocking parts of the DeSantis-signed gender-affirming care law.

The state Education Department, whose leader DeSantis appoints, also signed off on expanding the state’s so-called Don’t Say Gay law, which bans discussion of gender identity or sexual orientation in classrooms, and a rule requiring schools to publish lists of books that have gotten public objection. It is part of a policy push that critics have described as a functional “ book ban ,” even as the DeSantis administration has said its intention is to keep inappropriate books out of the hands of children.

DeSantis’ most consistent focus has been on upending the state’s education system. He has gotten legislators to pass measures to ban spending taxpayer dollars on most diversity programs at state universities and colleges, a move that prompted the NAACP to issue a travel advisory for the state .

In a rare move for any governor, DeSantis helped elect nearly two dozen local school board members. Aft e r they were elected , they quickly moved to oust superintendents seen as unfavorable to his agenda. He also removed top leaders from New College, a small liberal arts college, and replaced them with political supporters in an open effort to make the school more conservative.
