Routes North - Nordic travel guide

6 of the best food tours in Stockholm

Stockholm’s culinary prowess doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. And actually, Swedish cuisine is more interesting than many first think.

A food tour is a great way to discover Stockholm's cuisine.

Stockholm is also home people from all around the globe, many of whom have imported their own cuisines and opened interesting places to eat in the city.

Choosing where to eat in the Swedish capital can take time and effort, especially if you’re only visiting for a short period. The best thing you can do if you’re here for a couple of days is to join a tour.

If you’re looking for people to guide you on your culinary adventure, check out the five food tours in this article.

What makes Stockholm such a good place for a food tour?

With plenty of tourists arriving in search of classic dishes, central Stockholm’s a good spot for trying traditional Swedish food.

You’ll find no shortage of bakeries offering cinnamon buns and other goodies that are staples of Swedish fika , for example.

Cinnamon buns are a speciality in Sweden

Swedish meatballs can be found too, but they’re not really as widespread as you might think, beyond the most touristy parts of town.

There are some good restaurants offering their own take on the most famous Swedish dish , often served with lingonberry jam.

While you might be keen to try plenty of husmanskost (traditional Swedish food), you’re just as likely to encounter fresh, modern flavours too.

Really, Copenhagen was the founding city of the New Nordic cuisine movement, but the Swedish capital has tonnes of cool, upscale restaurants offering contemporary twists on everything from Arctic char to the famous Swedish smörgåsbord .

What can you expect from a food tour in Stockholm?

Food tours in Stockholm typically last for at least a few hours. And given that they’re mostly indoors, they’re less prone to cancellations due to bad weather than some other types of tours.

Visit markets and food halls on a food tour in Stockholm

Sweden has a big vegetarian scene, so veggies and vegans are usually catered for – as long as you let your guide know beforehand.

Most Stockholm food tours are led by a knowledgeable guide, well-versed in the city’s food scene. Moreover, you’ll often get to sample several dishes throughout.

★ SUGGESTED DISCOUNT

Save with the stockholm pass.

Get up to 50% off at Stockholm's top attractions, including the Vasa Museum, SkyView Stockholm and The Viking Museum, plus discounts on some of the city's best boat trips.

How much do foodie tours in Stockholm usually cost?

Food tours in Stockholm typically cost between $75 and $170, but some will set you back upwards of $200, usually depending on how much food is included.

Where do the food tours normally take place?

Many Stockholm food tours take place in the city’s food markets, such as Östermalms Saluhall.

What are some classic Swedish dishes worth trying on a tour?

Sweden has several classic foods that are renowned worldwide. Of course, Swedish meatballs should be high on your list – but that’s not the only thing you can try. Here are some other dishes you should have on your radar:

  • Kanelbullar: These Swedish cinnamon buns are often eaten during fika breaks at offices all round Stockholm.
  • Semlor: Available from January to Easter, these cardamom buns are filled with almond paste and cream.
  • Gravad lax: Served on salads, bagels or rye bread, dry-cured salmon is popular throughout Sweden – and Stockholm is no exception.
  • Sweets: Swedes love godis (candy), including Swedish fish . You’ll find big, bright candy stores all over the city.

What are the best food tours in Stockholm?

So if you want to find out more about Swedish cuisine, here are our five favourite food tours in Stockholm.

Go on a Nordic food walk

This tour will take you to some of Stockholm’s most famous markets and starts in upscale Östermalm. You’ll get to sample multiple types of food from Sweden, including cheese and seafood.

Take a afood tour and see how polkagris, a traditional Swedish candy, is made.

The walk takes in some of Stockholm’s most beautiful districts – including Gamla Stan – and includes a trip to see how polkagris , Sweden’s most traditional candy, is made.

BOOK THIS TOUR

Take a guided fika tour

Fika is one of the most coveted Swedish habits, and it typically involves coffee and a sweet treat – most often a cinnamon bun.

For more on this Swedish tradition, see our beginner’s guide to fika in Sweden .

This tour takes you to some of the top places that Stockholmers enjoy one of these breaks – and you’ll get to learn more about the tradition.

Of course, you’ll also be able to try some of Stockholm’s best pastries. Hot drinks and snacks are included in the tour price.

Dine out in the evening

The tours mentioned so far take place during the day, but Stockholm also offers lively nightlife.

Take a dining out tour to discover the best restaurants in Stockholm

Going out for dinner is a rewarding experience, and this tour will take the decision-making out of finding a place to eat.

You’ll start with a selection of Nordic tasting plates, then head to a nearby restaurant for the main course and a glass of wine.

Dessert and drink follow at one of Stockholm’s most popular lounges.

Considering that eating out and alcohol in Stockholm are expensive, the tour price is reasonable.

Take a personalised, private food tour

Eating out can be sociable, but if you’d rather go on your own, you can book a private tour with your own dedicated host.

This is one of the best in the city, and your guide can pick you up from your hotel, or you can meet in a central location.

You can choose what you want to eat, with a sample of between six and eight local delicacies. The tour lasts for around three hours and includes a drink – alcoholic or not.

Explore Stockholm on a fab foodie tour

This tour allows you to try some of Stockholm’s specialities in a 10-person group, lasting roughly four hours.

Östermalm is one of Stockholm's best food halls.

You’ll start in Östermalm then move on to other food places, passing by some of the Swedish capital’s best-known landmarks en route.

During the adventure, you’ll also have the opportunity to sample some of Sweden’s most popular beer, known as the Gold of The North, plus some Swedish candy.

I’m travelling alone, can I still join a tour?

Yes! Food tours are generally sociable, so perfect for solo travellers. Most tour guides will be more than happy to welcome you.

Are these tours suitable for bigger groups?

For the most part, the tours we’ve included are designed for smaller groups of 10–15 people. However, if you’re in a big group, some tour operators can offer a private guide or organise a tailor-made tour for you.

What if my plans change? Are these tours refundable?

Many of the tours are refundable, as long as you let the tour company know at least 24 hours in advance. But do check the small print before you book.

If the operator cancels, you can rebook or get a full refund.

Is the food included on these tours?

Yes – all these food tours include samples of tasty Swedish dishes. Portion sizes will vary, but you’ll typically be well-fed.

How much additional money should I expect to spend?

While these tours include food, tips are not included. And in some cases, you may want to purchase extra drinks or to go off-piste and sample something that is not included in the tour price.

Bearing these in mind and considering that you might want to buy souvenirs or candy and whatnot, an extra 500 SEK (approx 50 USD) should suffice.

Description

Our Stockholm food tour is a great way to discover Sweden’s capital. Not only do you discover different areas of this amazing city, but you also get to taste your way through a rich and varied food scene . You will get the very best of two food worlds. First, you have the traditional Swedish and Scandinavian food. For instance, meatballs, fish, cheese and cinnamon buns to give a few examples. Second, your taste buds get a more exotic smorgasbord of flavours and colours.

Stockholm is a city of variety and made up of different cultures. With this in mind, you also are introduced to Syrian, Iranian or Lebanese delicacies for example. Our Stockholm food tour is never the same and we like to vary. Moreover, we aim to support local, small businesses and those that have a special story to tell.

The capital of Sweden is a true gem. Therefore, it is no surprise that it has the nickname ‘Venice of the North’. The city is spread over several islands , that each has their character and amazing views on different parts of Stockholm. In general, S?dermalm is the most popular island. Not only does it host many cafes and restaurants, but it is also the trendiest and more bohemian and relaxed part of the city.

Furthermore, there is ?stermalm and its famous food court. This island is one of the more exclusive ones in Stockholm and the area where the rich and famous are living. It has a classy food, drink and nightlife scene and it is more upmarket. In addition to these, you have Norrmalm, which is the heart of the city and the central business district. And last but not least, you have Stadsholmen. For the most part, the latter is commonly known as Gamla Stan or the old town. It is without a doubt the most popular and most photographed area in Stockholm.

About this tour

Our Stockholm food tour takes you on a journey through all these areas . Just as each of them has their special traits, so does the food. Whereas ?stermalm is a bit more traditional, S?dermalm likes to experiment more and Gamla Stan is caught in the middle. This journey introduces you to different food courts and gives you a minimum of 6 tasters. You consume these indoors, while walking or standing. Also, you visit eateries and shops that are local favourites and you see the most popular landmarks and must-sees in Stockholm at the same time. Are you ready for your culinary walking adventure?

In general, one day is not enough. You can spend a long time discovering this mesmerising city that once was a tiny settlement between city walls. Stockholm has it all: not only culture and history, but also nature and of course its amazing archipelago. Unlike other capitals, it takes less than half an hour to be in a green oasis. Our Stockholm food tour leaves you with the feeling that you know this place and have scratched more than just the surface. Therefore, it is perfect if you want an introduction at the beginning of your stay or make most of your time if you only have a few hours.

Food Tours in Stockholm – take the tasty way through Swedens capital

Last Updated on September 7, 2018 by

FOOD TOURS STOCKHOLM. One of the best, maybe THE very best way, to get to know Stockholm is with a great guide by your side and a cinnamon bun in your hand.

Food Tours Stockholm

Sweden has a long and interesting food tradition that's given the world delicacies such as meat balls, gravlax, pytt i panna and – sorry about that – sour herring …

Combine this tradition with modern, talented, chefs and a huge influx of cultures and tastes from most parts of the planet, you get a city that makes foodies very, very happy.

In Stockholm you'll find international, Michelin starred, fine dining restaurants, amazing fast food, super yummy chocolate and toffee, great sandwiches, fantastic food markets and always something good to go with the food.

Beer? We're pretty much world leading experts. Schnapps? The best. Wine? Well, we import all of it, but we know how to pair it and to drink it. Coffee – we consume more coffee than any other country on this planet. Except for Finland. But who goes there, right?

Food Tours in Stockholm

You could of course try to taste all of this by yourself. But we really recommend that you go on one of the very popular food tours that Stockholm has to offer.

Not only for the food, even if we know you'll love it, but also for the fact that the tour guides on these tours are among the best in town. You'll learn lots about Stockholm. This is a unique way to please both belly and brain.

Stockholm Food Tour

This is the original food tour in town . It's popular and always get great reviews. The tour is small scale, never more than 12 participants, and it takes you to some of the most interesting places in town – as well as to some of the tastiest treats.

You'll start from Östermalmshallen, Stockholms oldest and poshest food market. From there you'll continue to a hip food court, then try some local chocolates and Swedish delicacies. Before the tour is over you'll have tried cheese, cured meats, local beer and – never to be missed – cinnamon buns and coffee as well.

Duration is about 4 hours and there are usually two tours per day, even if this can vary depending on the season.

» Read more & book the tour here

Welcome to Sweden Culinary Tour

Meatballs, fish soup, royal chocolate, liqorice – and much, much more. This food tour is an excellent introduction to the flavors of Sweden and it perfectly describes why Stockholm has become a foodie destination.

It takes four hours and makes 7 stops. Usually two tours per day, one at 10 a.m. and one at 2 p.m.

Stockholm Vegetarian Walking Tour

If you don't eat meat, Stockholm's got you covered. The vegetarian trend has been strong for many years and has recently moved into even the fine dining restaurants, with some of the creating entire menus where meat is something you add as an extra.

Many of the good vegetarian restaurants and cafés are located in Södermalm, a part of town that used to be quite bohemian. Today it's more gentrified, but still interesting and, in many places, very pretty.

This vegetarian food tour takes you around Södermalm to some of the vegetarian hotspots, restaurants as well as cafés. It lasts for approximately 2.5 hours.

Please note that for all tours you need good shoes and you need to be able to walk 3-4 kilometers. All other information is available on the booking page .

Taylor Swift Has Eras Tour Wardrobe Malfunction in Stockholm, Handles It Like a Boss (of Course)

The singer paused her show in Stockholm, Sweden to fix an issue with her mic pack

stockholm walking food tour

Michael Campanella/Getty

Taylor Swift is a pro performer — even in the face of wardrobe malfunctions.

During night three of her Eras Tour in Stockholm, Sweden, the 34-year-old singer briefly paused the show to deal with a technical issue.

In a video captured by a fan and shared to TikTok, the Grammy-winner seemingly struggles with her blue wrap dress mid-performance.

“Talk amongst yourselves,” she tells the crowd in the clip before walking over to her piano. She then fusses with her dress until a crew member appears onstage to assist her. Swift partially unwraps the dress, revealing a sparkly gold bra top underneath, which she wears for the new Tortured Poets Department portion of the concert.

Fans in the comments speculated that the issue was actually with Swift’s mic pack rather than her dress, but it certainly wouldn’t be the first wardrobe malfunction for the singer.

During her November 2023 concert in Rio de Janeiro, the heel of her silver Christian Louboutin boots broke during the opening Lover section of the show.

The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now !

Fan footage from the concert showed Swift reaching down and pulling off the broken heel of the sparkly shoe before throwing it into the crowd. In an X post from Pop Crave, it appears that one lucky fan grabbed the detached heel — a photo shared by the outlet showed the item inside of a concert-goers bag.

Christopher Jue/TAS24/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management

Ever the professional, the "Cruel Summer" singer continued her concert, balancing on her toes as she belted out songs from her 2019 album. One fan shared a video of Swift effortlessly walking on an invisible heel — a move very reminiscent of Margot Robbie ’s floating heel in the 2023's Barbie .

In April 2023, Swift’s garter broke while she was performing her song “Lavender Haze” in Tampa, Florida. In a TikTok video shared by a fan account, Swift walked toward her background singers and lifted up the hem of her sequined Oscar de la Renta T-shirt dress to show them that the belt around her leg had snapped off.

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

She played off the moment like an expert, continuing the song while her singers helped detach the garter from the dress and take it off. As this was happening, Swift happened to reach the point in the song with the lyric, "I end up in crisis (tale as old as time)." In true Swift fashion, she gamely which nodded along while throwing her arm up in the air at the apt lyrical moment.

Everything to Pack If You're Traveling For Taylor Swift's Eras Tour

stockholm walking food tour

In "Pack With Me," influencers and editors give us a rundown of their travel must-haves and a few travel hacks to go along with them. For this installment, PS Features Editor Yerin Kim shares what essentials are in her suitcase for a trip to Stockholm for The Eras Tour.

A week ago, I jetted off to Stockholm for a dream work trip : to see Taylor Swift's Eras Tour for the first time. In my four days in the Scandinavian city, I experienced the ultimate Marriott Bonvoy Moment — members can redeem their points for special adventures like this one — which included premium tickets to the Eras Tour in Stockholm, a stay at the luxe Nobis Hotel, and other activities. While the main purpose of this trip was to see Swift in concert, I was excited to check out Stockholm's famous sights, shops, and food in the days prior.

Stockholm is known as the world's "smallest big city" for a reason. Spread across 14 different islands, the city is easily walkable and surrounded by beautiful lakes and greenery almost everywhere you look. In just two days, I was able to take in the architecture of must-see tourist spots like the Swedish Royal Palace and Stockholm's historic old town Gamla Stan; walk through serene parks like Humlegården and Kungsträdgården; and roam the designer stores in Biblioteksstan — all in between snacking on Swedish meatballs and enjoying afternoon fikas. Although it was admittedly a jam-packed few days, the result was the perfect mix of history, food, and fashion before the main event.

To accommodate for both attending the show and exploring Stockholm, I made sure to pack concert essentials in addition to chic, casual outfits and general travel must-haves for a quick European getaway. If you're lucky enough to catch Swift at an international show this summer or curious about basic travel items for Stockholm, read our complete guide on what to pack for the Eras Tour abroad and find tips for any trip centered around concert tourism.

Best Packing Tips For the Eras Tour

Packing for any trip with multiple objectives can be difficult, but advance planning certainly makes it easier. I consider myself an expert packer, and I owe it to making checklists and building outfit combinations prior to even taking out my suitcase. If you're traveling for a show specifically, I recommend starting with packing your concert outfit, and then working backwards to fill the rest of your luggage. There are so many options when it comes to dressing for the Eras Tour , but I wanted to stick to items I already had in my closet, so I chose a ruffled pink minidress inspired by Swift's "Lover" era, paired with my comfiest, black knee-high boots.

Inspired by minimal and classic Scandinavian style, I focused on coastal hues and basic, clean silhouettes for the rest of my looks. That included packing a plain white tee, oversize button-down, and loose denim. For short getaways like these, I suggest sticking to a specific color scheme or neutrals to allow for flexibility when it comes to planning outfits. (After all, while having general outfit formulas in mind is important, you never know how the weather or your mood might affect your dressing.) If you have a fancy dinner or drinks built into your itinerary, throw in a pair of kitten heels or slip dress, though most establishments in Stockholm seemed to lean casual.

As is the recommendation for any European travel, travel light. It's unfortunately not uncommon to lose your luggage, especially during peak summer season, so I'd forgo checking any bags and plan on doubling up with a carry-on suitcase and a compact duffle for your personal item. You might also want to leave a little room — Stockholm is a shopper's paradise for both designer and vintage finds.

Best Travel Tips For the Eras Tour

My biggest recommendation is to make the most of whatever city you're traveling to, despite the main purpose being the concert. Though the highlight of my Stockholm itinerary was definitely the Eras Tour, exploring the city by foot and viewing all of its picturesque sights were also at the top of the list. In preparation for a shorter trip like mine, do your research on your must-sees in advance. I suggest using Google Maps to save all of those places, so you can plan around locations and see what might be feasible for your trip.

Keep reading for all of my packing essentials for traveling abroad for the Eras Tour — right off the heels of my own trip.

Friendship Bracelets

Friendship Bracelets

Little Words Project Fearless Stars Bracelet ($25)

Outside of Swift's performance itself, trading friendship bracelets with fellow Swifties is the best part of going to Eras. Get creative with beaded accessories of your own, or snag a few from Little Words Project , the "original friendship bracelet" brand known for its bracelets featuring words of affirmation.

Main Image

A Portable Charger

Anker Portable Charger ($16, originally $22)

Swift's show took place at the Friends Arena in Stockholm, which didn't allow concertgoers to bring bags or purses of any kind, so I had to stick to true essentials that could fit in my pockets. One of them was this portable charger. It got me and my phone through all of the Eras, as well as my journey to and from the stadium.

Main Image

A Setting Spray

Charlotte Tilbury Mini Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray ($23)

If you enjoy the concert in its entirety, including the opening act and Swift's full set, the production is a total of almost four hours. My makeup needed to withstand not only that length of time, but also the sweat and tears I'd shed from the various eras. I swear by this setting spray from Charlotte Tilbury, which was crucial for keeping my shimmery eye makeup and face gems intact throughout the evening.

Main Image

A Fragrance/Body Mist

Ouai St. Barts Hair and Body Mist ($28)

A fresh fragrance is also a must for a long, active concert like Eras. I opted for a mist over a more concentrated perfume to keep my skin hydrated and refreshed, and this one lasted all night long. I'm a big fan of Ouai's St. Bart's scent in general — it includes notes of dragon fruit, orange blossom, tuberose, and musk — and this hair and body mist just smells like vacation. A little spritz goes a long way.

Main Image

Knee-High Boots

Everlane Knee-High Banana Heel Boot ($350)

I know, I know. Knee-high boots with a heel might seem like a silly recommendation for a concert, but trust me, these are super comfortable and provide a little height. I did a ton of walking throughout the venue and was on my feet for most of the Eras in this exact pair. Plus, I repurposed them for several outfits throughout my Stockholm trip.

A Cute, Comfy Dress

A Cute, Comfy Dress

Abercrombie & Fitch All-Over Ruffle Mini Dress ($90)

I usually like to wear dresses or skirts for concerts. They're easy for dancing freely, quick bathroom trips in between sets, and staying somewhat cool in a crowded venue. Regardless of the era you choose to represent, opt for a breezy look like this one.

Main Image

A White Tee

Reformation Classic Crew Tee ($38)

On top of any planned outfits, I like to throw in a few white tees and tanks in my suitcase. This one from Reformation is one of the white T-shirts I reach for the most — I love its relaxed, boxy fit and soft, cotton fabric.

Main Image

A Cosmetics Case

Calpak Medium Clear Cosmetics Case ($85)

This viral cosmetics case is not cheap, but there's a reason TikTokers and PS editors alike are obsessed with it. Since I got this case from Calpak over a year ago, I haven't used any other pouch to pack my makeup and skin-care essentials. The medium size is perfect for week-long trips in particular. Depending on how you pack, the case can either lay flat with the two open compartments or be tightly folded and zipped.

A Travel Adapter

A Travel Adapter

Tessan European Travel Plug Adapter ($14, originally $19)

A travel adapter is a must when you're traveling to Europe, and this one from Amazon comes highly recommended. It's compact and includes multiple ports to charge several devices at once, whether that's a flatiron, laptop, or iPhone.

Main Image

A Carry-On Suitcase

United Colors of Benetton x Delsey Paris Hardside Luggage with Spinner Wheels ($100)

And of course, you need a vessel to throw all of those essentials into. I love that this carry-on suitcase has a hard, scratch-resistant shell that allows for a little flexibility if you're prone to overpacking or returning home with some extra goodies. I also prefer bright colors for luggage, because there's less of a chance someone will confuse yours for theirs.

Main Image

A Duffel Bag

Calpak Stevyn Duffel Bag with Shoe Compartment ($112)

Even if you think you might not need the extra room, I always like to bring a duffel or weekender bag as my personal item (Trolley sleeves are a must). This one from Calpak is spacious and extra durable, with several compartments to maintain organization. I kept the duffel pretty roomy on my way there, and sure enough, filled the bottom shoe compartment with my shopping finds from the trip on my way back.

Private classes allow the chef to give you special attention. Families will have ample time to ask questions about the gelato-making process. Everyone can wear fun aprons and chef hats and try a second gelato flavor in addition to the one you will make together.

Rome Culinary Food Tour

A walking tour of the city’s top culinary delights is one of the best Rome tours you can take, with or without kids. Secret Food Tours runs fantastic food tours all over the world. We highly recommend adding their top-rated Rome food tour  to your vacation.

This tour lasts over three hours, which is great value! Another option is a tour with a private guide. This will allow you to travel at your own pace to make sure the whole family has a great time.

Twilight Trastevere Food Tour

Most will agree the best area for authentic Roman dishes and a true Rome experience is the neighborhood of Trastevere across the River Tiber. Check out this  perfect tour of the culinary scene in Trastevere at Twilight  if you’re traveling with older kids.

On this incredible four-hour tour, dine out on the best street food at restaurants like Da Enzo al 29 and ‘Spirito Divino . Expect to visit ancient wine cellars and listen to interesting stories about the neighborhood as you walk through it. You will learn how to spot fake gelato while gorging on the best gourmet scoops you’ve ever tasted.

It’s hands down one of the best tours in Rome for families with teenage kids , though children aged four and up are very welcome. You can choose the group tour option or enjoy a private tour to explore Trastevere your way!

Riding Tours in Rome

Bike ride at night.

Rome’s historical center is  huge . It’s full of incredible archaeological sites and iconic landmarks which would take you many days to explore on foot. Get out of the midday heat and save little legs by booking this cool  e-bike tour of Rome by night !

Enjoy the sunset as well as the architecture of this beautiful city. This is one of the best Rome kids tours because they offer options for kids of all ages. You can request child seats, a trailer bike, or a child-sized bike so no one is left out.

Rome Golf Cart Tours

Another fun way to explore Rome on wheels is to book a golf cart tour for the whole family. Venture on a  golf cart tour along Rome’s Appian Way or explore Rome’s seven hills on a golf cart tour with Rolling Rome .

On a two-and-a-half-hour tour of the  Appia Antica  Roman road, head out of the crowded city and see important ancient sites. You will travel past the Aurelian Walls and the Baths of Caracalla followed by an underground tour of the Catacombs of Rome.

On the three-hour tour of Rome’s hills, you will visit over a dozen places including the famous Mouth of Truth from  Roman Holiday,  the Arch of Janus, and the Knights of Malta keyhole. Most of these spots are in or close to the historic center on top of famous Roman peaks like Capitoline, Aventine, and Palatine Hill.

Both of these tours of Rome are private. Not only are they two of the best kids’ tours of Rome, but they are both ideal if you’re traveling with older family members with limited mobility too.

History Tours in Rome

Gladiator school.

Rome’s Gladiator School  is exactly as awesome as it sounds. We are sure your kids will be talking about this experience for years.

Known as  Gruppo Storico Romano  in Italian, your children can take part in a two-hour lesson where they will learn how to become gladiators. They will be just as fierce as those who fought in the Colosseum during the times of Ancient Rome.

Passionate child-friendly guides with years of experience will teach your kids about the history of gladiatorial fights. They are provided with armor and (wooden) weapons as instructors teach them the skills necessary to ‘compete’ in one of the ‘bloody’ games at the end of the session.

Free drinks, a small snack, and free entrance to the Gladiator Museum of Rome are included in this experience.

Sistine Chapel

Visiting the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel can be a busy, overwhelming experience for adults, let alone kids! But you can’t visit Rome with kids without witnessing the beauty of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

Make the most of your visit to the holy Vatican City by booking an early morning express tour of the Sistine Chapel  or a  Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel tour  with Context Travel.

Both tours offer skip-the-line tickets. The early morning express tour of the Sistine Chapel is semi-private for up to six people and lasts one hour and 45 minutes. On the Vatican tour of both the museums and the Sistine Chapel, you can book the small-group or private option which lasts around three hours.

There are two of the best tours in Rome for families visiting Vatican City. You can choose the tour that makes sense for the age and interests of your kids. We promise your family will be glad you booked ahead and aren’t stuck waiting in a huge line outside in the baking sun!

Visiting Rome without a stop at the Colosseum is like visiting Australia’s Great Barrier Reef but not snorkeling. It has to be done! Luckily, the scale and history of this Seventh Wonder of the World are sure to impress even the most unfazed kids.

If you want to take a Colosseum family tour, there are so many great ones. This express Colosseum tour for kids  is a classic. The private family tour lasts two-and-a-half hours and includes a skip-the-line ticket, games, a treasure hunt, and prizes to engage little ones.

Booking a private, underground Colosseum tour will give you access to areas of this ancient ruin which are usually restricted to the general. Both the  underground tour of the Colosseum  and the  underground Colosseum tour with LivTours include skip-the-line tickets.

On either tour, you can visit the underground where animals were kept for gladiator fights, all levels of the structure, access to the exhibition, and further exploration at the Roman Forum.

Visiting the subterranean burial chambers of Rome’s Catacombs is a fun thing to do with children who are intrigued by spooky and macabre places. One of the best tours in Rome for families of the Catacombs is this  private Catacombs tour .

With over 2,000 years of history underneath Rome, it is a great place to learn about Roman gods, pagan temples, and Christian crypts. There are even graves of some of the first popes in the Rome Catacombs!

This tour goes the extra mile by offering luxury transfers to the city center. It lasts three hours and since it’s a private tour, you can linger at places or skip whatever you want.

Day Trips in Rome

Only two and a half hours south of Rome, Pompeii is the perfect place for a fascinating and educational day trip. However, the hassle of renting a car and driving on windy Italian roads is no one’s idea of fun!

LivTours offers a fantastic  semi-private, small-group day tour of Pompeii  or you can book a  private day tour to Pompeii and Capua with Tours of Pompeii.

Pompeii is an ancient Roman city near Naples whose residents tragically perished in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. They were preserved under the ash for over a century until excavations began and unearthed this window to the past.

LivTours works with an archaeologist in Pompeii who will show you around the site and answer any questions. Tours are limited to six people and include transfers to and from Rome in a luxury van.

Tours of Pompeii also includes transfers but has an extra stop in Capua, a city north of Naples with some fabulous ruins. This is also an opportunity to visit the second-largest Roman amphitheater after the Colosseum and all the top sites in Pompeii including the Vettii House, the Baths, the Forum, and the House of Faunus.

Ostia Antica

Do you only have space in your itinerary for a half-day tour? Viator offers five-hour  private tours of Ostia Antica from Rome .

This ancient Roman port town is only 17 miles away from Rome. Kids of all ages (even those in strollers!) are welcome on this tour which includes hotel pick-up, a driver, and a child-friendly guide.

Check out the ancient Roman buildings in Ostia Antica including the necropolis, dye houses, cleaners, large baths, city center, apartments, and bakery!
