Criminals posing as Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines staff on X could siphon money from your account

staff travel kenya airways

We have found a couple of X handles posing as staff of Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines, who are reaching out to complaining passengers and offering to help them. But we have established that the individuals or groups behind these profiles have criminal intents. There could be a lot more, probably for other airlines.

One of the profiles has been written this way: @KenyaAirwaysn, with an ‘n’ at the end, and another profile @KQSupportor is linked to it.

Then there is one profile known as Rep Vanessa Supervisor Kenya Airways Manager with the handle; @manager94710 created in May 2024. One of the fake accounts claiming to be representing Ethiopian Airlines calls itself Representative Ethiopian Air with the handle @AskEthpn.

“They asked if I have a World Remit account, and I said I don’t, so they asked for my credit card details. I gave it to them, but they got back later to say it didn’t go through,” my friend told me. He then gave them another friend’s mPesa account for the transfer of the compensation, but it was never done.

What saved my friend was that, he had not informed his bankers back at home before he travelled, so, international withdrawals were not allowed on his debit card. The criminals had tried to withdraw money but were unsuccessful, as a result.

A further check of the accounts show that they were created in May and June this year. Indeed, one was created only this week, June 2024.

“Be careful with Kenya Airways staff in Nairobi” Review of Kenya Airways

We missed our 8.30am Kenya Airways flight (the airlines fault, not ours) from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro. The staff at Kenya Airways desk initially insisted that we would have to pay the full fare for a new flight at 5.00pm. When we refused to do so they said there were Business Class seats available on the 1.30pm flight which we could have if we paid the difference between Economy and Business. With reluctance we asked what the difference in price would be. The Kenya Airways staff member said she had checked the price difference twice on screen and it would be $US210 per person. We agreed to pay the difference on the basis that we would dispute the cost later with Kenya Airways. In order to create a paper trail we insisted on paying by credit card. We were told that if we paid cash we could do it at this desk. If we insisted on paying by card we would have to go back through Security, buy another visa (as we had technically left the country) and pay at the Kenya Airways desk on the concourse. When my partner eventually got to the Kenya Airways concourse desk the staff again insisted he pay in cash. When he refused they suggested they would void the reserved Business Class seats. He continued to insist on paying by card. At this point the price for the upgrade mysteriously dropped from $US210 to $US184 per person. Our conclusion was that the relevant Kenya Airways staff had intended to take the additional $US52 as a “commission “. By the way, my partner did not need to buy a new visa to get back through Security. And we discovered on the flight that our upgrade to Business Class entitled us to the grand total of a glass of water and a wet towel!

Another flight: another airline - but what a pleasant experience Enjoyed the help and service from the cabin crew. Would recommend a flight with Kenya

The staff wee polite and friendly The only issue I had with the 6 hour flight was the lack of in-flight entertainment. I would be happy to fly with Kenya again

I have flown Kenya Airlines on many different occasions. Yet, I must say, they are providing excellent leadership. I found the food, service and seating to be quite nice and comfortable. I slept 6 hours of the 8 hours on the flight! You will enjoy Business Class!

Avoid the long haul 737 economy class as these have 3 seats each side and they tend to be full. In addition, Kenya Airways serves food once and keeps th crap 2h in front of you. Engines are very noisy. Food is ok. Drink selection belwo average. Business class is ok albeit no entertainment screens even on long flights. Was told to use IPAD with availale movies via WIFI....

How flights to nowhere can help 'lessen the anxiety' for travelers with autism

“Accessible Travel” is a six-part series focusing on the travel industry’s preparedness to welcome travelers with disabilities. If you'd like to contribute to our future reporting and share your experience as a source, you can click here to fill out this quick form .

PROVO, Utah ― Breeze Airways ’ flight 9951 to Provo, Utah, on April 30 was a lot like any other flight: all the pre-departure announcements were made in the gate area, passengers boarded by zone, the flight attendants gave their safety demonstration, snacks were served – the whole nine yards. But the plane never left the ground.

That’s because flight 9951 was a different kind of trip for the passengers and staff onboard.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

“We don’t fly much in general, and with them, we’ve been intimidated by the process,” passenger Travis Hoki said pointing to his son. “Max is doing well, and we figured this group would be understanding if he’s loud and crazy.”

Max, Hoki’s 3-year-old son, has autism, and flight 9951 was designed for travelers like him to get familiarized with air travel.

“It’s an opportunity to do something that’s just so meaningful for a group of travelers that, in many cases, wouldn’t be travelers if it weren’t for this type of event,” said Breeze Airways’ President Tom Doxey. “When you can do an event like this, and especially if it’s in a smaller community … it’s even more meaningful.”

The boarding demonstration on April 30 was Breeze's third such exercise, but it was the airline's first in Provo. The previous two took place in Hartford, Connecticut.

The exercise is part of Breeze’s partnership with Autism Double-Checked , an organization that aims to make travel more streamlined for travelers on the autism spectrum.

“From a passenger point of view, this isn’t a one-and-done,” Alan Day, co-founder and CEO of Autism Double-Checked, told USA TODAY. He said many travelers with autism take a long time to feel comfortable in new environments and exercises like the Breeze boarding demonstration are just one way they can get more familiar with how air travel operates.

“The goal is to make it blend together so it becomes seamless,” Day added.

The gate area in Provo was crowded and a little rowdy as guests waited for the exercise to start. Many of the participants knew each other from specialized schools in the area or from parent networks. In many ways it was like any other flight – kids played with toys and ran around the terminal before boarding began.

Onboard, the scene was a little louder than on an average trip. People were chatty and excited on the plane. They may not have observed the seatbelt sign as closely as they would have needed to on a real flight, but overall the experience was pretty authentic.

Breeze flight attendants received training in how to interact with autistic passengers. The crewmembers who participated in the exercise on April 30 all did so as volunteers on their own time.

Their training included practical advice for making travel easier for those with autism, such as closing the bins more softly to avoid making a sudden or unexpected noise.

Although the plane remained on the ground, passengers onboard had the full flight experience. Flight attendants checked to ensure everyone was buckled up after the boarding door closed and came around with snacks. The pilot made an announcement about estimated flight time (5 minutes, although the flight got to the gate early), and the cabin crew passed through the aisles again before arrival to collect trash.

One passenger excitedly noted to USA TODAY that she had never flown before, and it was her first time using airplane mode on her phone on an actual airplane.

For participants, the experience meant future travel would be easier.

'Moment of panic:' Disabled traveler's video went viral. She hopes it helps others in her situation.

Breeze and Autism Double Checked advertised the event through local neurodiversity groups and institutions, and said they often partner closely with the host city to get the word out. Spokespeople for the airline said this first event in Provo came together pretty quickly and that advertising was a “grassroots effort” that happened mostly through word of mouth, but that they hope to provide more notice for future events. Some prospective participants heard about the April 30 demonstration too close to the start, so there’s already interest in a repeat.

“We’re getting ready to go on a big family reunion trip this summer,” Kohleen Jones, whose sons Miles, 8, and Alden, 5, both have autism, told USA TODAY. “When we heard of this we were immediately like, ‘we should take advantage of this.’ ”

Both boys even brought practice carry-on luggage in preparation for their trip, and Jones said the exercise was a chance for her kids to ask questions and see what flying is like.

“Just to practice to lessen the anxiety when we’re actually going on our real trip,” she said.

The Hoki family felt the same way.

“We’ve wanted to take our kids on a plane but have felt intimidated,” Lindsey Hoki told USA TODAY. “We saw it, and we were very excited.”

In addition to the boarding exercises, Breeze Airways has made ongoing commitments to be more supportive of travelers with autism. As part of their partnership with Autism Double-Checked, they will publish a travel guide and institute an autism concierge helpline so travelers have a point person to reach out to for accommodations ahead of their trips. They’ll also begin accepting the organization’s autism passport, a document that travelers can fill out once and submit to any participating travel company. It contains information about the specifics of their condition and what kind of accommodations they may need.

“This should be commonplace,” Day said. “We want to make the special, commonplace.”

The reporter on this story received access to this event from Breeze Airways. USA TODAY maintains editorial control of content.

Have you, or someone you know, had issues with accessibility while traveling? What happened?

Zach Wichter is a travel reporter for USA TODAY based in New York. You can reach him at [email protected].

This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: How flights to nowhere can help 'lessen the anxiety' for travelers with autism

Travis Hoki and his sons Milo, 7 years old and Max, 3 years old, of Pleasant Grove, Utah wait in the terminal for the call to board the airplane. Max has autism. Breeze Airways hosted an exercise for people with autism, ages 3-20, to experience the process of airplane procedures to make future travel easier.

James Corden stood up for his fellow passengers on a flight from Portugal to London over the weekend after a “chaotic” travel day with British Airways.

A woman named Vanessa told Metro the former “Late Late Show” host, 45, was the voice of reason for everyone else on board as he confronted the staff over the unacceptable experience.

Vanessa told the outlet that the plane circled below altitude for about 45 minutes after takeoff before an automated announcement declared an emergency landing.

“It was something along the lines of, ‘Gather your possessions as best you can, take off your shoes, and when you’re told to by the airplane staff, please adopt the brake position and when we land if you’re able, please find your nearest emergency exit and vacate the plane,'” Vanessa recalled.

However, soon after, “the staff on the plane assured the passengers that they would no longer have to assume the brake position.”

“Basically, what had happened was the flaps on the airplane wing which are supposed to go down when you are in the air won’t go down, which meant that they wouldn’t be able to raise them on landing,” she explained.

The plane, which took off from Faro, eventually landed in Lisbon.

Once they touched down, the passengers were all held on the tarmac for three hours before the aircraft was deemed unsafe for flight.

Despite the upsetting travel day, Vanessa said Corden tried to lift everyone’s spirits by laughing and cracking jokes.

“He walked up and down the aisles talking to people, and let everybody take a selfie with him,” she said.

“He was just really nice, he would have been well within his rights to sit and sulk in his seat like the rest of us would be doing but he didn’t,” Vanessa added.

After the passengers were finally let off the aircraft, the British star acted as the group’s spokesperson as he respectfully confronted the airline crew about how the situation was handled.

“We’re in the terminal and there was not a member of [British Airways] staff to be found,” she recalled. “And they put us in immigration queues. And there was just no one there telling us what was going on.”

According to Vanessa, the comedian was the one who told the flight staff that they were in the wrong place — and they immediately directed everyone to the right area.

Photos from the incident show the “Cats” actor speaking with the airline employees as his fellow passengers flanked him on each side.

However, the group was then told that only club flyers or gold flyers would get free hotel rooms for the night. Corden, who qualified for the comped room, once again rushed to the defense of his fellow passengers.

“James was a club flyer and he stood there, and was like, ‘What about all these people who’ve got all these kids with them?’ like saying that’s not acceptable. It’s not right,” Vanessa recalled.

While it’s unclear if his pleas worked, the passengers arrived at the airport the following day and were greeted by an equally charming version of Corden.

“We were told to turn up at 9:30 for a flight which actually was again delayed by over two hours and James Corden stood in the same queue as everybody else, doing the same things as everybody else did,” she said.

“I saw him let women and children in front of him,” Vanessa continued. “He was a really nice guy both times.”

While Vanessa had nothing but great things to say about the comedian, he has been blasted several times in the past for allegedly rude behavior.

James Corden and Julia Corden

In April 2023, one of Corden’s former TV directors called him one of the “most difficult” and “obnoxious” people he has worked with.

Less than six months earlier, Mel B also labeled the former late-night host as the “biggest d–khead” in Hollywood when asked to list the worst celebrities she had ever met.

“I think you always have to be nice to the people that you work with, whether it be production, camera guys, sound, lighting,” the former Spice Girl said of the comedian.

“We all work for the same thing, so you should always be nice and he hasn’t been very nice.”
