Spirit of Boston Dinner Cruise

The overall experience was very enjoyable, as we enjoyed a wonderful meal, and got to see all the improvements to the Boston Harbor area, while not feeling crowded. The staff was very friendly and attentive to your needs. Our server, Daniel, was awesome!

The food was delicious, there was pork, chicken and fish as the main with several salads & sides. It is a buffet and you may go up as many times as you like. The cruise around the harbor was great, you could go outside, where there were tables to sit at. The staff was very friendly.

Very enjoyable for our first time to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was on the cool side for the first week of June. The Seaport area is also a good time walking around and checking out the various waterfront establishments.

This trip was a Christmas present for our Mother. She had a great time. The food was amazing and the weather was perfect to be out in the harbor.

The weather was not so nice the evening of our cruise but one can only hope for clear skies! The meal was very good! Lots of selection and no end to the amount of food! The stag was quick to replenish if the dishes became empty. Our server Ashley was great! A lot of fun! The cruise had dancing which started out lovely. 2 slow dance songs to fit the crowd celebrating anniversaries. However!! That changed quickly to music for a handful of youth celebrating a birthday! I believe there were 5 slow songs from the start and through the duration of the evening. The largest portion accommodated the maybe 14-16 year olds. Rather disappointing for many! (When the slow songs were played the door was full of dancers!) Overall a great evening! Just a note to Mike!! Be more accommodating to ALL the audience!

We had a family birthday party of 4 people. And the party was good. This dinner cruise worth every penny you spend. You get pretty nice buffet, good drinks and the most important is atmosphere. Everybody celebrates something. Mostly anniversaries, birthdays. Lots of happy people. And nothing to say about the views of Boston sunset and night Boston. Neither picture can show how gorgeous they are!

Best Boston cruises

Whale watching cruise

1.  Whale watching cruise

Stellwagen Bank is one of the best spots for whale watching in the world. Each summer, around 50 individual humpback whales return to this hotbed of biological activity. Take a whale-watching cruise and you'll see not only these majestic beauties but also other species of whales as well dolphins, seabirds and otters. Learn all about the marine life you encounter from a knowledgeable on-board naturalist.

Boston Duck Tours

2.  Boston Duck Tours

  • Things to do
  • Walks and tours
  • price 3 of 4

The city’s most iconic tour lends both land and sea perspectives to Boston’s history and architecture, with sense of humor to spare. Hop on a revamped, World War II-era amphibious vehicle and you'll cruise the streets of Boston, then plunge into the Charles River for views of both the Boston and Cambridge skylines and a chance to intermingle with sailboats, kayaks and, yes, local ducks. Along the way, you'll be educated and entertained by a ConDUCKtor, who will surely encourage you to occasionally quack at the locals.

Historic sightseeing cruise

3.  Historic sightseeing cruise

Sometimes it’s best to combine education with your alfresco outings. This 90-minute tour immerses you in the lore of Boston’s waters, detailing heroic happenings during the Revolutionary War; the earlier industrial workings of the city’s ports; and the history of the Harbor Islands National Park Area, consisting of 34 bucolic islands and mainland parks.

Sunset cruise

4.  Sunset cruise

This cruise offers a bit of history and spectacle along with gorgeous sunset views. The 90 minute cruise takes you around the Harbor past historic sites, then pauses as the USS Constitution fires her cannons and lowers her flags to mark the end of the day. Enjoy beautiful colors of the setting sun reflecting off the downtown buildings, and watch as the skyline lights up as darkness falls.

USS Constitution cruise

5.  USS Constitution cruise

Get up close and personal with one of the city's most famous historical landmarks. This 45-minute tour takes you over to Old Ironsides, one of the very first ships commissioned by the US Navy (1797). After an up-close view of the ship, you’ll take a quick harborside swing around other historical landmarks, including Bunker Hill Monument and Old North Church.

Classic Harbor Line Boston

6.  Classic Harbor Line Boston

Classic Harbor Line offers cruises around Boston Harbor year-round on the yacht Northern Lights as well as seasonally on the Schooner Adirondack III . Take a standard cruise to see the sights, or check out one of the many themed cruises on offer: sunset sails, barbecue and beer series, holiday brunch cruises, Jazz cruise, Cinco de Mayo cruise, and more.

Odyssey Cruises Boston

7.  Odyssey Cruises Boston

Brunch and dinner cruises on the Odyssey combine good food, a relaxing cruise, and a decent bit of sightseeing in one outing. Enjoy a freshly-prepared meal as you slowly cruise through the Harbor, where you'll see landmarks like the USS Constitution. Reserve a window table for the best views. There's a cash bar and live music, so go ahead and make it a party.

Spirit of Boston

8.  Spirit of Boston

This classic cruise has all the trappings of a classy, old school date: a beautiful sunset plus dinner and dancing as you sail around the harbor. A sizeable buffet offers plenty of options to start the evening. Upstairs on the deck, a DJ keeps the party going as the sun sets dramatically over the water. Ocean breezes, a sunset, and beautiful city views are perfect for romance or a celebration.

Charles River Cocktail Cruise

9.  Charles River Cocktail Cruise

Go all out on date night with a pre-dinner cocktail cruise, while taking in the spectacular scenery from the serene waters of the Charles River. Enjoy watching the sunset over the city of Cambridge with a drink from the full-service bar in hand, and lowkey cocktail music playing in the background.

Essex River Clambake Cruise

10.  Essex River Clambake Cruise

There’s not much that’s more quintessentially New England than a clambake, and combining it with a river cruise that sees you and your friends cruising to a sandbar, hanging out and sharing boiled lobster, clams, corn on the cob and all the fixings, is the perfect activity. Head to the North Shore for a tidal beach clambake, or just take a scenic river excursion on a public cruise.

Cape Cod Canal Cruise

11.  Cape Cod Canal Cruise

Just a few minutes before the Bourne Bridge, take a detour to Onset for the only sightseeing cruise of the history rich canal and see Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Sagamore Bridge, Bourne Bridge, Cape Cod Bay and more on a sightseeing cruise, a music cruise or a family music cruise.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

spirit of boston cruises

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

A man with dark hair wears navy blue and white clothing as the captain of a large windjammer sailing vessel. He stands on deck, a walkie-talkie-like device in his hand, beneath the ropes and riggings of the vessel's sails.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

spirit of boston cruises

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

The Best Way To Access Canada's World-Famous Spirit Island Is This Popular Lake Cruise

T he Canadian Rockies are incredibly photogenic. Moraine Lake, with its turquoise waters dwarfed by peaks, is so beautiful it was once on Canada's $20 note. The aptly named Emerald Lake, located in the breathtaking and underrated Yoho National Park , offers a shot of the wooden lodge and red canoes so typical of the Rockies. However, both of those iconic sights are given a run for their money by Spirit Island in Maligne Lake. This small island sits in aquamarine waters, enveloped by majestic mountains. It's a view that will stay in your mind forever and is definitely up there with the most Instagrammable travel destinations .

The catch is that Spirit Island isn't easy to reach, as it sits over eight miles up the 13-mile-long lake, and there are no footpaths or roads leading there. The best way to access Spirit Island and capture one of the most famous pictures in the Canadian Rockies is by luxury lake cruise. The Maligne Lake Cruise takes you on a picturesque journey along Maligne Lake to Spirit Island in a glass-enclosed, heated boat. You get to stay warm and dry while enjoying panoramic views. As you cruise, your guide will give you fascinating insights into the natural wonders and cultural history of the area.

Cruising To Spirit Island

First things first: Spirit Island isn't actually an island all year round! In fact, it's connected to the shore most of the year, only becoming an island when spring snowmelt makes the water levels in the lake rise. However, as we said, there are no footpaths leading to Spirit Island, so whether it's connected to the shore or not, you can only reach it by water.

There are two options for cruises: 90 minutes or two hours. Both reach Spirit Island, but the longer one allows you more time around the island and a stop to enjoy the views at gorgeous Pincushion Bay.  Jemma Lovie , who reviewed the cruise on Google, wrote that they were "speechless" at the beauty of Spirit Island. They also praised the guide, who told them about the history of the area in an "informative, respectful but engaging manner."

Another happy cruiser,  How it is Liz , wrote that they were able to get off the boat near Spirit Island and "take impressive photos of the magnificent scenery." (Note that you can't walk on Spirit Island, but you will have a good chance to take photos.) If you need any more convincing to do this cruise, take some advice from  Denica Beale , who wrote "10/10 experience, a trip to Jasper isn't complete without the Maligne Lake cruise!"

Other Things To Do Around Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is huge, frigid, and the Canadian Rockies' largest natural lake. It reaches depths of up to 315 feet and is one of the coldest lakes in the Rockies. Why are we telling you this? Because there are other ways to reach Spirit Island, but they're far more challenging and less comfortable than the cruise.

It's possible to canoe or kayak on Maligne Lake and make it all the way to Spirit Island and back within a day. However, if you're heading out there under your own arm power, it's a much better idea to book a campground and stay overnight so you can really enjoy the paddle. There are three maintained campgrounds along the lake; the closest one to Spirit Island is Fisherman's Bay Campground, a 15 to 20-minute paddle away. Fisherman's Bay is also, unsurprisingly, a great place for fishing.

If you'd rather take in the sights of Maligne Lake from dry land, consider doing one of the many hikes in the area. For the best views of the lake, head up the Maligne Lake Viewpoint trail. This challenging, steep route takes you high above the tree line and offers sweeping views of the whole lake. The 2-mile Mary Schaeffer Loop is a short, flatter hike that hugs the shoreline of Maligne Lake before looping around to the start. However you choose to explore, you'll definitely want to add Maligne Lake to your road trip through Canada .

Kyle Stowers had three hits, including two doubles and a career-high four RBIs, Ryan Mountcastle also had three hits and the Baltimore Orioles cruised to a 11-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

Cedric Mullins added a two-run triple as Baltimore scored five runs in the fourth off Boston’s Cooper Criswell (2-2) to help open the series with its fifth consecutive win.

Cole Irvin (5-2) pitched five shutout innings in a return to the rotation spurred by the Orioles placing John Means and Dean Kremer on the 15-day injured list last week.

Criswell allowed seven runs — six earned — over four innings as Boston lost its third out of four overall and fourth straight against Baltimore. Five of the Orioles’ six hits off the right-hander went for extra bases.

Romy Gonzalez hit a three-run triple in the eighth off Baltimore’s Thyago Vieira, who let all five batters reach in his club debut.

TWINS 6, ROYALS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Ryan pitched seven smooth innings for Minnesota, who got a two-run homer by Jose Miranda and a three-run shot from Trevor Larnach and hung on to beat Kansas City in the opener of a four-game series.

Ryan allowed one run and four singles while lowering his team-leading ERA to 2.96. The right-hander struck out nine and walked none.

Ryan (4-3) has pitched at least into the sixth in each of his 11 starts this season.

Alex Kirilloff’s two-out RBI single in the eighth inning gave the Twins (29-24) enough insurance to improve to 5-1 since a seven-game losing streak.

Hunter Renfroe’s two-out RBI double in the ninth off Cole Sands put men on second and third and the tying run on deck for the Royals (34-21), before Jhoan Duran was summoned for the final out.

BLUE JAYS 5, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) — George Springer, Bo Bichette and Davis Schneider homered, and Toronto beat the Chicago White Sox.

Chris Bassitt struck out seven in five scoreless innings as Toronto stopped a three-game slide. Bassitt (5-6) allowed five hits and walked none against his first major league team.

Springer connected in the second inning after Daulton Varsho reached on a two-out walk against Nick Nastrini. It was Springer’s fourth homer of the season.

Bichette led off the fourth with his fourth homer, a 419-foot drive to center.

Nastrini (0-4) allowed three hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked four.

Last-place Chicago lost its sixth consecutive game. It dropped to 15-40 for the worst 55-game start in franchise history.

REDS 3, CARDINALS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) — Nick Lodolo came off the injured list to pitch 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball, Jeimer Candelario homered and Cincinnati won a season-high fourth straight game, over St. Louis.

Lodolo, who missed his last two starts while nursing a groin injury, allowed a first-inning home run to Paul Goldschmidt but otherwise stayed out of trouble against the hot-hitting Cardinals. The 26-year-old lefty allowed five hits, struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Reliever Fernando Cruz struck out all five batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings. Sam Moll fanned two more Cardinals in the eighth, and Lucas Sims retired the side in order in the ninth to get his first save.

St. Louis had a five-game win streak snapped after coming off a 7-1 homestand.

The Cards got solid pitching from starter Lance Lynn, who allowed three runs (one earned) and five hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked three.

BREWERS 5, CUBS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Willy Adames hit a three-run homer during Milwaukee’s five-run eighth inning, and the Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs in Craig Counsell’s return to American Family Field.

Counsell, the winningest manager in Brewers history, left Milwaukee after last season when the Cubs signed him to a five-year contract worth over $40 million. He already had managed against his former team when the Cubs took two of three from the Brewers at Wrigley Field from May 3-5.

The Brewers welcomed Counsell back with a brief thank-you video message on the scoreboard that was accompanied by a chorus of boos from Brewers fans in the sellout crowd of 41,882. Counsell was booed every time he left the dugout.

The Cubs lost their fifth straight and wasted a brilliant performance from Justin Steele, who spent most of the day in a pitchers’ duel with Robert Gasser. The Cubs didn’t arrive in Milwaukee until early Monday morning following a 4-3 loss at St. Louis in a rain-delayed game Sunday night.

The NL Central-leading Brewers lead the Cubs by 4½ games.

NATIONALS 8, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) — Mitchell Parker pitched five-hit ball into the seventh inning and CJ Abrams homered, helping Washington beat Atlanta Braves.

Parker (4-2) allowed three runs, struck out six and walked none in 6 1/3 innings. The rookie left-hander has permitted three runs or fewer in each of his first eight major league starts.

The Braves adjusted their lineup in their first game since losing 2023 NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. to a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Sunday.

Second baseman Ozzie Albies was the team’s new leadoff hitter. Jared Kelenic and Adam Duvall, who have been sharing time in left field, each started. Duvall replaced Acuña in right and Kelenic started in left.

Jacob Young had three of the Nationals’ 15 hits. Nick Senzel had two hits, including a two-run single in a four-run first inning against Charlie Morton.

Parker retired 14 consecutive batters in one stretch. He was working with an 8-0 lead before fading in the seventh.

ROCKIES 8, GUARDIANS 6

DENVER (AP) — Charlie Blackmon homered to cap a six-run fourth inning and Colorado ended Cleveland’s nine-game winning streak.

Blackmon drove in four runs and made a sliding catch in foul territory for Colorado, which is 11-6 since an 8-28 start.

The fourth-inning rally ended Cleveland’s longest winning streak since it won an AL record 22 straight from Aug. 24 to Sept. 14, 2017.

José Ramírez continued his strong start to the season with two doubles and drove and increased his major league RBI lead to 54 with two driven in. He had a chance for more but struck out with a runner on in the ninth.

The Rockies own the second worst record in the NL but are 6-1 against Texas, Philadelphia and Cleveland over the last two weeks. They used a big fourth against starter Xzavion Curry (0-1) to turn a three-run deficit into a 7-4 lead and end the Guardians’ streak.

GIANTS 8, PHILLIES 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Brett Wisely doubled in a key insurance run in the sixth inning after an earlier RBI single, Patrick Bailey hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the fifth, and San Francisco beat Philadelphia.

Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell remains winless with San Francisco since signing a $62 million, two-year contract in March. Randy Rodríguez (1-0) relieved and pitched two innings for his first major league win.

Thairo Estrada’s hard grounder scored the tying run in the fifth when the ball glanced off third baseman Alec Bohm’s glove for an error.

Heliot Ramos added a two-run single in the seventh as the Giants won for the ninth time in 11 games, much to the delight of the holiday sellout crowd of 40,598. San Francisco was swept in a four-game series at Philadelphia from May 3-6, getting outscored 29-11.

The Phillies fought back after trailing 3-0 to go ahead 4-3. Kyle Schwarber connected for his 10th homer with a two-run drive in the third. Edmundo Sosa hit a one-out triple in the fourth, then scored the tying run moments later on Snell’s wild pitch.

PADRES 2, MARLINS 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jake Cronenworth drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the seventh, one batter after shortstop Tim Anderson committed his second error of the inning, and San Diego beat Miami.

It was the Padres’ second consecutive home win after losing five straight games at Petco Park.

After failing to score with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, the Padres came through in the seventh for the go-ahead run.

Ha-Seong Kim hit a leadoff single and Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on Anderson’s fielding error with one out. Jurickson Profar flied out and Anthony Bender replaced A.J. Puk (0-6) on the mound. Manny Machado grounded to Anderson, who went for an inning-ending force out at second base but bobbled the ball for another error. Cronenworth then worked a seven-pitch walk to bring in Kim.

Adrian Morejon (1-0) got the win and Robert Suarez pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save.

MARINERS 3, ASTROS 2

SEATTLE (AP) — Bryce Miller allowed two runs over six innings to pick up his first win since April 17, and Seattle used a big first inning against Houston starter Framber Valdez to hold on for win over Houston.

Seattle scored three times in the first off Valdez and then leaned on its pitching to make the early lead stand up. Miller did his part then turned it over to relievers Trent Thornton, Gabe Speier and Andrés Muñoz to close out the victory.

Muñoz got the final three outs for his 11th save.
