A lovely return visit to Lake Garda

An excellent brochure. Each holiday destination has a double page spread, full of useful information. It was very helpful to see what was included in the price. A first class Tour Manager - a lovely lady, extremely well organised. I appreciated her telephone call a couple of days before our departure date to introduce herself and answer any queries. A really interesting and enjoyable few days. A very good introduction to One Traveller with whom I will travel again.

One Traveller & Kenya are recommended.

One Traveller cater very well for the single traveller. The accommodation and food was consistently of a superior standard and the locations chosen provided varied habitats. However this came at a cost. There was a lot of travelling between locations. Equally the game drives were good but long. With early morning starts this meant days were tiring.

Thank you so much for your 5-star review! We are pleased that you have enjoyed your holiday in Kenya and all that Kenya has to offer. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon on another solo adventure. With best wishes, Your One Traveller team

I liked being looked after

I liked being looked after , helped at the airport, staying together as a group worked well . My one observation is that lunches could be soup, sandwiches , lighter food . We had 3 full meals a day , I cannot speak for others but it was too much food for myself . The Prague Hotel was excellent this year ,( 2024)

Date of experience : May 12, 2024

Thank you for this lovely 5-star review! We're glad to hear that you found the assistance you received helpful and that the Hotel Prague met all of your expectations. We hope to welcome you again soon on another solo adventure. With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

3 trips done and 4 more booked so far !

I have travelled with One Traveller on 3 occasions now and they blow the competition out of the water. I have used 2 other ‘solo’ holiday companies and there is no comparison. The hotels they use have all been a high quality standard. Their tour managers work hard to ensure everything runs smoothly. If there is an issue, they are right on it. The local guides I have experienced are extremely knowledgeable. Some will say they are expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review. Its great to hear that your experience with One Traveller has been positive and that the service you receive is always high quality. We are looking forward to welcoming you back again! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team

One Traveller Holidays.

I recently completed holiday number 20 with One Traveller, a Croatian Island Cruise. I keep holidaying with them because they are so very good at what they do. Great care is taken of us from first booking to the end of the holiday. The office staff are always so helpful and tour managers simply the best. As an 85 year old it is so reassuring to have someone attending to all the details, so I can relax and enjoy my holiday. I have two more holidays booked with them in October and Christmas.

Date of experience : May 21, 2024

Wow! Thank you so much for this amazing review! It sounds like you had a fantastic time on your Croatian Cruise holiday. Our team is dedicated to ensuring every aspect of your journey is seamless, and its so great to hear that our office staff and tour managers had such an impact on your experience. Its an honour to have your continued support and loyalty! We look forward to welcoming you back! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

My first Solo trip with One Traveller…

My first Solo trip with One Traveller and I will be going again. The service was great from start to finish. We were well looked after, I couldn’t fault anything from transport, accommodation, food and travel manager all excellent. The group was a nice size and everybody was friendly. Thank you One Traveller

Organisation and planning of trip to…

Organisation and planning of trip to Opatija was v good. I know there was no choice abt having the extra guide for the duration of the trip, but OT guide Sandra got on so much better with everyone it was a shame she was not in charge all the time. One comment ….. just too much food!!! - as you get older you do not have such a big appetite and to have a buffet breakfast, then 3 course lunch followed by 3 course dinner we all found just too much and it occurred on several days. Food lovely but the amount was OTT

Thank you for this lovely 5-star review! We're pleased to hear the planning and organisation of your holiday to Opatija was very good. We appreciate your kind words and hope to welcome you back on another solo journey soon! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

Lake Maggiore Trip 2024

Everything well organised. Every day was full of interesting things to see and do. Hotel excellent and in wonderful position on the lake. Really enjoyed every minute, and having the G7 Finance Ministers meeting at the hotel next door just added to the enjoyment for me, with helicopters whizzing around and security boats on the lake. Perfect timing! (That's not sarcasm! I love that sort of thing!) Food far too good, but I'll get rid of the excess baggage eventually!!!

Date of experience : May 19, 2024

Thank you so much for your 5 Star review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your holiday and to have the added excitement of the G7 ministers must have been great We hope to host you again soon on your next adventure. Kindest Regards The OT Team

Has anyone else suffered a similar bad…

Has anyone else suffered a similar bad experience with One Traveller ? Despite advertising in their brochure a Direct flight from Heathrow to Haneda I was offered an indirect flight that altered my arrangements by over 12 hours. The Director Ian Darkin has also refused to answer a second letter of dispute. One Traveller is holding £500 of my money which it is refusing to return despite this significant change. I would not give any stars to this company. They are acting as both Judge and Jury. Pity there is no travel Ombudsman.

Date of experience : June 15, 2024

Basque experience

The trip was well organised with a variety of excursions. The hotel was very good and in an excellent location. The One Traveller tour manager was very knowledgeable. Good value for the money.

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback and for 5-stars! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your holiday and appreciated the range of excursions. Its great to hear that the hotel met your expectations with its quality and excellent location. We hope to see you again on another solo holiday soon! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

My 4th holiday with you. As always well organised and we visited some amazing places. Great tour manager in David- he kept us informed and entertained, even endured our leg pulling!

Guided tour of Peru

Although pricey, One Traveller take great care of their customers who may suffer from a lack of confidence travelling on their own soon after bereavement. Of the two tours I have experienced, both Tour Guides were exemplary in their professionalism and care for the travellers. Accommodation and the majority of meals are included in the price leaving the traveller to pay for snacks, social drinks and tips.

Date of experience : May 01, 2024

Thank you so much for this lovely review! We're delighted to hear that you have had a positive experience with us, and that our tour guides were attentive to your needs. We always aim to provide exceptional care and support to all our guests to ensure they have a hassle-free holiday. We hope your travels with us have given you the confidence to journey more often. We hope to see you again soon. With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

Lakes District Tour

I thoroughly enjoyed my first ever visit to the Lakes District and our tour guide(Mandy) took care of everything very efficiently.

Thank you so much for your 5-star review! We're delighted to hear that your first experience in the Lake District was such a success. We hope to see you again soon for more solo adventures! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

Beware booking in June for Swiss alpine railway holiday

I have just returned from the Swiss alpine railway holiday. The itinerary stated that there were 3 rail journeys including 2 cog trains. However 3 weeks before the holiday they said the cog trains weren’t running and provided substitutes. Unfortunately the substitutes were awful and if I’d known when I booked I would have chosen a later date. It turns out the cog trains don’t start until mid June. I can’t believe a company like one traveller didn’t know this when I booked in march. Such a shame as I had heard such good things about the company and as a first experience it was very disappointing.

Date of experience : June 02, 2024

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to read that you are unhappy with your experience regarding the changes in itinerary and do understand that this must have been frustrating for you. If you would like to discuss the matter further, please get in touch (01760 722 011) or [email protected] ). We will be happy to talk through the situation with you. Kindest Regards The One Traveller Team.

Blissful, relaxing, unique cruise

Small group of guests (only 18). Local guides at every town for only 1 hour. Excellent helpful and friendly staff/crew on board. Unique holiday stopping at islands which were fairly unspoilt. Cheerful amusing tour manager.

Date of experience : May 08, 2024

Thank you for leaving us such a lovely five-star review following your recent cruise with us. We're pleased that your experience with us was such a success, and we hope to see you again soon on another solo adventure! Kind regards, The One Traveller Team

Alone but not alone holidays

The holiday was enjoyable right from the start. The booking procedures was easy. The tour manager was very welcoming the 4 star hotel was excellent the organised trips were exactly as promised in the brochure. The group was very friendly. I’m already looking for my next destination with one traveler - thank you all

We're excited to hear you're already looking for your next destination and we can't wait to welcome you back. With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

A great introduction to Madeira

My recent holiday to Madeira was very well planned. Lovely hotel, great excursions and ably looked after by our Tour Manager Jayne. The local guides were excellent and informative. My first visit to this beautiful island and I enjoyed every minute.

Date of experience : May 13, 2024

Thank you so much for this glowing 5-star review! Maderia is a beautiful country full of breath-taking sites and we are pleased that you got to experience this. We hope to see you again soon on another One Traveller adventure! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

Travel planning apps: Comparing options for your next adventure

By Roadtrippers

Travel planning is simultaneously exciting and daunting.

On the one hand, the thrill of a new adventure sends adrenaline flowing as you dream about new discoveries and memories.

On the other hand , there are all the stops and stays to plan, info and reservations to keep track of, and the overarching fear of missing out (FOMO) on a must-see place along your trip itinerary.

If you’ve been conducting your travel planning by frantically searching multiple sites, digging for reservation info in your email, creating spreadsheets, or other time-sucking planning strategies, there is a better way.

Travel planning apps take the guesswork and stress out of planning vacations by inspiring, organizing, and guiding your travel itinerary. But not all travel planning apps are created equal.

In this post, we’ll compare features of existing tools to help you choose the best trip planning app.

Roadtrippers travel planning app

How we built this list

We’ve been building travel-planning apps since 2012. Over that time, we’ve gotten to know our competition really well. We’ve also deeply connected with what our road-tripping crew wants and doesn’t want in a travel planning app that knocks it out of the park.

To build this list, we tried out our competition and dug deep into other apps’ features. What follows is a detailed review of what other travel planning apps feature compared to Roadtrippers.

What to ask of your travel planning app

We’ve framed this article with a series of questions to ask of your app as you search for the right trip itinerary planner.

We hunt for things ourselves this way, so we figured it’d be a good way to organize our information.

Will your travel app inspire you?

Most of our competitors only offer tools to help you pick and organize the pieces of your trip. Then, it’s up to you to find travel inspiration elsewhere.

That’s why it’s important to ask your travel planning app if it’ll offer travel inspiration for you. If not, it might be time to look elsewhere.

From day one, Roadtrippers has been unique in this regard.

Our thesis is, “We help people discover interesting things along the way and avoid the fast food and big box nation suggestions.” Roadtrippers

We were built by travelers who live and breathe the places and spaces that happen on trips.

The stories from these travelers then live in our app so you can harness the collective energy of the road-traveling community.

one traveller facebook

Source: Anja via Unsplash

Take our Extraordinary Places series as an example. This is in-depth content created by our community for off-the-beaten-path stops in every state. Our content then flows into the Roadtrippers travel planning app so you can be inspired by these stories as you plan your trip.

And then there are our trip guides . These are user-generated trip itineraries, with stories and reviews from fellow travelers, that you can use to customize your own trip.

Best of all, we’ve woven all of the data and stories from 38 million real-life trips taken on our platform to create Roadtrippers Autopilot™ . Autopilot uses the power of human trips plus supercomputing skill to suggest an entire trip itinerary for you based on just a few questions. From there, you can customize the trip as you like.

Our handwritten content combined with the power of Autopilot™ makes us the best travel planning app for travel inspiration.

one traveller facebook

How will your trip-planning app plot your route?

Only one of our competitors’ apps asks if you’re driving an RV or a car. This is a critical question because trip routes for RVers can be significantly different from those for car trippers. For example, a scenic trip off the beaten path might be great for a convertible road trip but a disaster for an RV due to low-clearance bridges and small gas stations.

Additionally, it’s important that your app tell you how one route over the other may impact fuel economy by vehicle type. Folks traveling in large SUVs may want a more direct, fuel-efficient route whereas people in smaller cars might be more inclined to the scenic route.

That’s why your travel planning app should ask you about the vehicle you’re driving before it starts helping you plan your route.

Roadtrippers is one of the few apps that does this. We’ll even estimate the fuel cost of your planned trip based on your vehicle type so you can decide your route accordingly.

How long will it take to plan my trip?

The goal of a travel planning app is to simplify the process of trip creating. Not all apps are created equal in this regard. Some even require you to use outside tools to build a complete trip. Most take large chunks of time that could be spent dreaming about your vacation.

Roadtrippers Autopilot™ is the only trip-planning tool that significantly speeds up the planning process by autogenerating a trip that anyone can use as a baseline to easily add/drop places.

Just answer a few simple questions, and then Autopilot™ does all the heavy lifting for you. It uses data from over 38 million real-life trips to build the foundation of your itinerary. From there, you can fine-tune your vacation by adding extra stops, stays, and detours right within the app.

Questions your RV route planning app should ask you

RVers need a travel planning app that plots a safe and sensible route. We say sensible because many of our competitors offer one-size-fits-all trip planning that doesn’t adjust for RVers. RVers need campgrounds, gas stations that accommodate big rigs, and fun, camper-focused stops along the way. That’s why the app you choose should ask you questions to build RV-safe routes for you. Here’s how the Roadtrippers app does this for RVers :

  • An RV-safe route is plotted for you based on the specific dimensions of your camper
  • Campgrounds (and free overnight parking ) are shown along your route, many spots are bookable in-app
  • Roadtrippers Magazine is stacked with RV-focused travel-inspiration content to help you find the perfect activities as you roll

What about waypoints?

Waypoints are planned stops along your trip. Hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, and attractions are a few waypoint types.

Ask your travel planning app questions like these:

  • Can I edit, rearrange, and remove waypoints? You should be in the driver’s seat of your trip planning. Roadtrippers let’s you customize waypoints to your heart’s content — many of our competitors do not.
  • Can I add custom notes to each stop? Having reservations and other info saved where it makes the most sense is handy. When you use a travel planning app like Roadtrippers, you can put custom notes for any stop, so this information lives where it belongs. Many of our competitors don’t offer this feature, meaning you may scramble to find reservation info in your email or spreadsheet instead of having it where you need it.
  • Can I change my route? Believe it or not, there are a few travel planning apps out there that make it difficult to change your route after initial planning. The Roadtrippers app has a drag-and-drop feature that allows you to move, modify, and add to your route on an interactive map.
  • Suggested stops? Sometimes you want to leave the trip inspiration to your travel planning app. Autopilot™ is our tool that plans a whole trip for you based on your answers to a few questions. None of our competitors offer this sort of trip planning.

one traveller facebook

Off the beaten path or on it?

Your app should allow you to customize your route, whether it’s on main roads or not.

While some of our competitors support this, none of them have the library of content we do, including our Trip Guides and blog content . This content is right at your fingertips in our travel planning app, helping you with travel inspiration as you roll.

Insider knowledge

The best travel planning apps feature local information about destinations. Roadtrippers combines rich content with real-life reviews to help you live like a local when you travel.

Will your travel planning app help you create an affordable trip?

What help is a travel planning app if it plans a trip well outside your budget?

The Roadtrippers app shows you the approximate fuel cost for the trip in your specific vehicle . Locations in our app also feature pricing information and reviews so you know what to expect.

Autopilot™ will even plan an entire trip for you based on the budget range you select — something not offered by any other travel planning app.

Trip planning app based on your budget

Who’s navigating?

Hard to believe, but many travel planning apps out there don’t have navigation built in.

You could create an entire trip using one of our competitor apps only to have to manually recreate that trip in another navigation app like Google Maps.

Roadtrippers is one of the few travel planning apps with navigation built in, meaning you can plan and navigate your trip from the same app. And our navigation is RV-safe too so you can rest easy as you roll.

one traveller facebook

Will you play nice with Apple CarPlay?

We want easy access to our trips just like you do. That’s why we built the Roadtrippers app to sync with Apple CarPlay. We’re one of the only travel planning apps that’ll show up on your car’s in-dash screen this way.

What about reviews?

Ask your travel planning app if it’ll show you peer reviews of the places you want to stop.

Roadtrippers shines here. You can read about real-life human experiences for just about any waypoint we have.

There are competitors out there that do this too, but they just focus on showing you the reviews. It’s then up to you to find a different system to add in your stops and build out your trip plan.

Do all that in one place with the Roadtrippers travel planning app .

Offline maps?

RVers especially tend toward areas where cell coverage is limited. When this happens, it’s important to have a travel app that let’s you download maps for offline use.

Roadtrippers Premium offers this so you can navigate the radio-free zones, many of our competitors do not.

one traveller facebook

Source: Denys Nevozhai via Unsplash

Travel information or travel inspiration ?

Travel planning apps from many of our competitors serve mainly as storage tools for gathering and organizing trip information.

That’s cool, but we think a travel planning app should inspire and guide you while providing a great tool for planning, navigating, and enjoying your ideal trip.

That’s why we built Roadtrippers, an app that captures the heart of travel while offering all the practical tools needed for your trip.

Can you trip plan with friends?

Trip planning is better when it’s a team effort. Roadtrippers lets you add collaborators to your trip so you can build it with friends and family.

one traveller facebook

Who is the Roadtrippers app for?

Roadtrippers is for RVers seeking a one-stop shop for campgrounds, RV parks, overnight parking, RV-safe routes, fuel stops, and more. Roadtrippers is for car trippers seeking the best hotels, restaurants, attractions, and quirky stops along the way.

Roadtrippers is for groups of friends and family planning travel together.

And the Roadtrippers app is for travel inspiration, trip planning, and navigation that happens all in one place.

Who is the Roadtrippers app not for?

If you’re planning on flying or doing a lot of international travel on your trip, there are other apps we’d recommend to complement Roadtrippers because we can’t do it all (yet).

When comparing the pros and cons of travel planning apps, it’s important to find the tool that packs in all the features you need so you won’t bounce from that app to your email, a spreadsheet, and an outside navigation app.

Many travel apps accomplish pieces of this, but Roadtrippers is the only one that brings it all together in the right trip for you — whether you travel by car, RV, or anything in between.

I've traveled to over 80 countries by myself. Here are 8 things I do to stay safe.

  • After traveling solo since I was 18, I've hit over 80 countries.
  • I've made my fair share of mistakes, but I've learned how to stay safe while traveling alone.
  • Simple measures, like sharing my location, have helped me avoid unwanted situations.

Insider Today

I've been traveling on my own since I was 18. After visiting over 80 countries and 13 years of trial and error, I've learned a few important safety tips.

Although flight prices seem to be rising ahead of the summer surge, they're significantly cheaper than this time last year, so I'm itching to plan my next trip.

I follow these rules everywhere I travel — it doesn't matter how upscale or "safe" the destination is supposed to be.

Although some situations are unavoidable, here's what I do to stay safe and alert while traveling solo.

I always share my location and itinerary with someone close to me.

one traveller facebook

Before a trip, I always share my flight and hotel information with my mom. I've also gotten into the habit of sharing my live location with her (indefinitely).

Other than the fact that it gives her a sense of security, I know that if anything were to happen (or if she doesn't hear from me when expecting to), she would have enough information to make a few calls and confirm I'm safe.

It only takes a few minutes but can make a huge difference in the long run.

Wearing a flat crossbody or belt bag under my clothing is key.

one traveller facebook

I always avoid wearing backpacks and those trendy see-through bags — there's no need to make someone curious. I don't like having my purse and valuables super exposed because it makes me a prime target for pickpockets.

Although it's easier to wear belt bags in colder environments when I'm wearing layers, I can still manage in lighter clothing.

Lululemon's Everywhere Belt Bag, Athleta's Pacesetter Run Belt, and Peak Gear's Travel Money Belt have been my go-to for traveling . They're small and thin enough to wear under my clothing but can hold my essentials (cash, credit cards, a phone, my passport, and copies of my ID).

I don’t wear my expensive bling or designer pieces.

one traveller facebook

I typically want to look good for photos, but wearing expensive clothing and stand-out jewelry always attracts unwanted attention.

Wearing shiny necklaces and a stack of bangles while sporting a Gucci tracksuit makes it look like I have money, which is the opposite of what I want someone to think when I'm traveling alone.

It also means I'm less likely to successfully negotiate or barter a good price on items in markets.

There are basic things I research about each city or town I’ll be staying in.

I'm a super spontaneous traveler. Although I usually have a list of places I want to visit, I rarely follow a day-by-day itinerary.

Regardless, once I know where I'm going, I always take time to plan which area to stay in and book hotels in advance . I try to find the best neighborhoods, then I explore a list of hotel options and select them based on reviews, location, and overall vibe.

I also always ask the front desk staff if there are any areas I should avoid once I check in — not everything is online.

Sometimes, I'll even look for female-oriented hotels or ones with mostly female staff members because that makes me feel a little more comfortable.

Looking lost or scared is asking for trouble.

How you carry yourself is a big deal. If I'm lost, I typically use the Maps.me app, which allows me to use maps even while offline.

I try to pop into a coffee shop — or even a bathroom stall — to look at the map and get my bearings. If I can't find a place to make a pitstop, I'll walk to a more populated area with lots of traffic.

If worse comes to worse, I'll just hail a taxi to take me back to my hotel.

Looking lost makes it pretty obvious you're a tourist and gives the impression that you're willing to accept help from anyone. Unfortunately, some people take advantage of situations like that.

For the same reasons, I also never walk around looking frightened, even if I'm freaking out on the inside.

There are different transportation apps all over the world, so I make sure I have the right one.

Not everywhere has Uber or even many taxis. I always look up popular transportation apps wherever I'm traveling and download them on my phone.

I usually even enter and save my credit card information, so I'm ready to roll and don't find myself stuck when I reach the destination.

I make sure I have enough cash with me.

I've traveled to places where credit cards aren't widely accepted, or I can't withdraw cash from ATMs.

To avoid that panic, I always carry cash and exchange it for the local currency at the airport or hotel.

I don't keep it all on me when I'm exploring — I just carry some with me and leave the rest safely locked in my suitcase.

I've learned to not say yes to everything.

When I travel alone, I'm bound to meet new people, and sometimes they invite me to parties or for drinks. But I always politely decline.

Nothing good has ever come from drinking with strangers in a foreign place, in my experience. And I always want to be clear-minded enough to pick up on strange or dangerous situations.

I don't even share my plans with strangers I meet, and I never post my real-time locations on social media.

It might seem obvious, but I also don't accept rides from strangers because then they'll know my whereabouts.
