Get to Know Carnival Horizon

The line that brings the sea and the sky together inspired us... to build a ship that unites you with great fun, comfort, dining and exotic destinations. And most importantly, unites you with one another. It's Carnival Horizon! This ship doesn't just do it a little bit, either. First, Carnival Horizon goes big with the two-screen Carnival Multiplex ® , which brings together one theater packed with huge IMAX ® action and one with 3D visuals, incredible motion effects and more! This ship keeps things flowing with an onboard waterpark that splashes you more than a little — Dr. Seuss WaterWorks ™ splashes you oodles, with a little help from the wacky characters everybody loves. Go for a bike ride way, way above it all at SkyRide ® . The Punchliner Comedy Club ™ and Playlist Productions ™ are just two of your top onboard entertainment picks, and they’re both focused on uniting you with unforgettable performances up on stage. For relaxation, get to Serenity Adult-Only Retreat ™ , or step up to max relaxation at Cloud 9 Spa ™ featuring great massages, thermal suites and more. Havana Bar ™ & Pool is a good one too — a spot that brings together stylish poolside lounging with authentically Cuban cocktails... adding hot nightlife into the mix once the sun goes down. And all day long, you know we've got stuff for the kids — Carnival Horizon has three age-specific youth spaces! This ship brings tons of flavor to every meal. It starts with a guy named Guy — Fieri — who created two awesome spots on the ship: one's the crowd-pleasing Guy's Burger Joint ™ , and the other happens to be Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse ™ , a spot that serves up BBQ classics paired with freshly-brewed-right-on-board beers. If you're looking for great seafood on Carnival Horizon, then Seafood Shack ™ 's the place to cast your net. Bonsai Teppanyaki ™ is an intimate meal and interactive performance, while Fahrenheit 555 ™ is a dining experience that stands toe-to-toe with some of the best steakhouses on land. Jiji Asian Kitchen ® and Cucina del Capitano ® each specialize in delighting certain taste buds: the ones craving pan-Asian favorites, and classic Italian dishes served family-style. (Check... and check!) Add all this together and you've got... a vacation on Carnival Horizon that truly brings it all together.

Why Royal Caribbean is about to own the market for short cruises from Florida

Gene Sloan

Call it the ultimate cruise ship for short weekend getaways.

When Royal Caribbean 's giant Utopia of the Seas debuts in 2024 with a series of three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral , Florida, it'll instantly shoot to the top of the list of the best ships available for short getaways in North America.

Not just to the top — but miles above its closest competitor.

The still-under-construction, 236,860-ton vessel, which will be the second-largest cruise ship in the world when it debuts, will be far bigger, newer and more amenity-filled than any other cruise ship sailing short itineraries in North America.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In short, it'll be the ship that everybody wants — or should want — for a short cruise. And, for Royal Caribbean, that's the point of what some longtime industry watchers may have seen as an unusual first deployment for the vessel.

Cruise lines often assign their newest and biggest ships to longer seven-night sailings — a more lucrative market — and place older and smaller vessels on shorter runs. However, Royal Caribbean is taking the opposite approach with Utopia of the Seas.

In the great chess game that is ship deployment among the major cruise lines, Royal Caribbean's announcement Tuesday that Utopia of the Seas would focus on short sailings when it debuts in July 2024 was a king-killer move in the short-cruise market. A checkmate moment.

Aiming at first-time cruisers

Royal Caribbean's plans for Utopia of the Seas are all about drawing new customers who have never cruised before — or what is known as the "new-to-cruise" market.

People who are new to cruising are leery of booking long sailings in case they don't love cruising as much as they hoped. As a result, they tend to gravitate to short three- and four-night cruises where they can test the waters, so to speak. Until relatively recently, many of the ships devoted to such short sailings out of North American ports weren't the best the industry had to offer. To try the best ships, you had to book a longer sailing.

That all began to change in the last four years as Royal Caribbean began deploying some of its best vessels on short itineraries out of Florida, starting in 2019 with two snazzily upgraded vessels , Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas, and continuing this year with an announcement that one of the line's giant and much-loved Oasis-class vessels, Allure of the Seas, would begin short cruises out of Florida later this year .

southern caribbean cruises from florida

Allure of the Seas is one of the biggest, most amenity-filled ships in the world, and its deployment on short cruises will be a game changer for the niche. However, the deployment of Utopia of the Seas on short cruises is even more game changing.

Of the five giant Oasis-class ships now sailing, which are the five biggest and most amenity-filled cruise ships currently at sea, Allure of the Seas is one of the oldest (it was unveiled nearly 13 years ago), and it's the only one that lacks a massive water park, a marquee feature for the series. It also lacks several other features found on newer Oasis-class ships.

The deployment of Utopia of the Seas on short cruises as its first mission after debuting in 2024 marks a first for Royal Caribbean. Never before has the line sent one of its new Oasis-class ships directly into short-cruise service.

Related: The 6 classes of Royal Caribbean ships, explained

"We've made a strategic shift to put our best products on short getaways," Royal Caribbean Chief Marketing Officer Kara Wallace told TPG this week. "Our goal really is to bring and attract the next generation of cruisers, and Utopia is a ship that will do that."

Noting that the shift in strategy goes back to the deployment of Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas on short cruises in 2019, Wallace said the idea was to "make that first impression, the best impression" with first-time cruisers.

Royal Caribbean has occasionally offered one-off short cruises on Oasis-class ships in the past as part of ship redeployments, and the sailings have always been a hit with customers, Wallace said. That, in part, gave the line "the confidence to ... move forward and make a move like this."

southern caribbean cruises from florida

Another factor behind the move, says Wallace: Vacationers these days are increasingly eager for short getaways. There are a growing number of people who would rather take multiple short vacations in a year than just one or two longer vacations, she suggested.

"People are choosing to do more frequent shorter getaways, and if they want like a teaser, a sampler platter (of a cruise), Utopia of the Seas is it," she said.

As one of Royal Caribbean's newest and biggest ships, Utopia of the Seas will have nearly all of the most popular marquee features found on various ships across the Royal Caribbean fleet.

Like the five other Oasis-class vessels, Utopia of the Seas will have three separate pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, a surfing simulator, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on the top decks.

Inside the vessel, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine, plus two casinos, a spa and a showroom with Broadway-style shows. It will even have indoor ice skating rinks.

In addition, as Royal Caribbean announced Tuesday, Utopia of the Seas will have several new-for-the-line venues, including an as-yet-unnamed dining experience that will draw on snazzy technology to create a "locomotive journey" as you dine. Royal Caribbean was coy about the latter concept but released the artist's rendering below as a tease of what customers can expect.

southern caribbean cruises from florida

The line also said the pool areas of the vessel will have a "reimagined" look as compared to the pool areas on earlier Oasis-class ships, and the massive, 10-deck-high Ultimate Abyss dry slide that is a signature feature of several other Oasis-class ships will be 43 feet longer on Utopia of the Seas.

Wallace also hinted at two other tweaks to the Ultimate Abyss slide that could make it the most over-the-top slide experience at sea: the addition of "booster rollers" on its inside that will make riders go faster, and new transparent tube sections.

"People on the outside can see you going down the slide, and [riders] get that glimpse of daylight before it goes back to dark again," she said.

Two giant new Royal Caribbean ships on the way

Utopia of the Seas is just one of two giant new ships that Royal Caribbean plans to debut in 2024 — both among the biggest cruise vessels in the world.

The other new vessel, Icon of the Seas , will arrive in January 2024 and has been getting more press of late as it'll be the biggest cruise ship ever built.

Icon of the Seas also will boast a number of buzzworthy new features, as you can see in our sneak-peek video below. TPG's video team got exclusive access to the ship in May at the shipyard in Finland where it's being built.

Wallace said the two ships are aimed at two different markets. Icon of the Seas, which will do seven-night voyages out of Miami, is positioned as the "world's best family vacation" option, while Utopia of the Seas, which will sail from Port Canaveral, is the ship for the "world's biggest weekend."

"The exciting thing about them [is] that they're doing two different products out of two different markets," Wallace said. "Icon is really focused and doubling down on the family market, and Utopia is all about the weekend and the short getaway."

Utopia of the Seas will rotate between three-night sailings starting on Fridays that end on Monday mornings and four-night sailings that start on Mondays and end on Friday mornings.

All of the Utopia of the Seas sailings will include a day at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, which Wallace notes will turn the short cruise experience on the ship into a resort experience at an epic level.

Related: The ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean

When you include Perfect Day's water park, pool and beach offerings, it's a trip where "there's not three slides [the number on Utopia of the Seas], there's actually 17 slides in a weekend. There's eight pools. There's six beaches," she said. "When you think about all of these things together, it really makes this the best possible short getaway there is."

Members of Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society loyalty program will be able to book initial sailings for Utopia of the Seas starting Thursday. The ship's sailings will open to the general public for bookings Friday.

This Southern Airport Is The Absolute Worst For Layovers In The US

Man sitting in airport

While they may be money savers or inevitabilities, layovers are stressful. Sprinting through hallways trying to make it to your gate on time is nerve-wracking and not a great way to start or end a vacation. And anyone who has been to Orlando International Airport (MCO) knows that this is not an airport for the faint of heart. In fact, it's regularly ranked as one of the worst in the country, especially for layovers.

Thanks in part to its resident vacation hubs, Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando, or even the nonstop flights to the Caribbean , MCO is always busy. It has also at times been the busiest airport in the country. On March 16, 2024, the airport even claimed to have had its busiest day ever with a whopping 102,064 departing passengers.

Weaving through the crowds of people or navigating the trains to get between terminals is likely a big reason passengers hate connecting at MCO — besides the fact that you often have to go back through security if you change terminals, as one user on Tripadvisor noted: "This place is a complete disaster... Had to take 2 trains to connect from gate 5 to 80. None of which was marked on the train or loading area. The worst part, you have to leave TSA secured area to do this. [Thus] making it necessary to go [through] security just to change planes. Good luck if you have less than [a] 2hr layover."

MCO has a bad performance track record

Visiting Disney World and having to deal with the massive lines at MCO is a big personal reason for having TSA Pre-Check. No matter the time of year, it seems there are always backups and issues at this airport. That said, it didn't come as a surprise that MarketWatch named MCO the worst airport in the country for layovers. That rating is based on the amount of seat availability, cleanliness of public areas, charging station access, and food and beverage staff service. Having had to sit around MCO for delays before, for several hours at a time, we agree that all of those areas could use improvement.

Delays are another big reason you don't want to have a layover in Orlando if you can help it. According to a study done on the delays reported by the Bureau of Transportation Services by Places to Travel (vis Business Traveler ), MCO had the second most delays relative to flights with 2,766 between January 2023 and February 2024. The airport's average delay time was just over 90 minutes.

That's at least seven delayed flights per day, so hopefully if you're connecting in Orlando it isn't to fly to another layover or a long delay could put a wrinkle in your travel plans. Though if you get really waylaid maybe you can get out of the airport and enjoy some of the timeless things to do in Florida while you wait.

MCO is absolutely massive

Outside of the notoriously long security wait times or potential delays, there is another obstacle to a layover at MCO: The huge airport itself. In terms of sheer size, MCO is the third largest airport in the United States. Although it only has 129 gates compared to Chicago O'Hare International Airport's 213 (O'Hare is the 7th largest airport), it is truly a behemoth. It takes up nearly 21 square miles. That's because it was originally the McCoy U.S. Air Force Base until it became a public airport in 1976.

This enormous airport also sees its fair share of passengers — in 2023, the airport served more than 57.7 million people. For reference, O'Hare had 73.9 million passengers in 2023. Assuming the massive crowds, we highly recommend that you avoid flying on the worst days of the year out of a place like MCO. Needless to say, MCO is crammed with travelers coming and going as well as its over 150 shops and restaurants where folks can bide their time.

Though, if worse comes to worse and you miss your layover, you can always stay at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport, which is inside the main terminal. MCO is an unbelievable transportation hub that can intimidate even the most flexible airport adventurer. Just don't let the eerily lifelike statue of The Traveler catch you by surprise — maybe he missed his layover, too.

The Caribbean Hurricane Season Is Here—This Is What You Need to Know

Yes, it’s still possible to have a great caribbean vacation during hurricane season..

Even if it is stormy around La Romana in the Dominican Republic, other parts of the Caribbean may have perfectly fine weather.

The conventional wisdom is that the Caribbean is a no-go zone during hurricane season, which spans from June through November. But that isn’t necessarily always the case. When major hurricanes do occur, they usually affect only a small part of the islands at a time, which span approximately 1 million square miles of the Caribbean Sea.

“Even if a hurricane is impacting the southern Bahamas, most of the region would likely have ideal tropical weather,” says Frank J. Comito, the now-retired CEO and director general of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association .

But if you do plan to visit the region during hurricane season, it’s important to be prepared for a chance of serious storms and severe weather. Here’s what you need to know about traveling to the Caribbean during hurricane season.

What are the different kinds of tropical storms?

Weather patterns can be difficult to understand, especially when the difference between a tropical storm and a hurricane can feel somewhat nebulous to most travelers. But the difference between the two all comes down to wind speed, which is the most important factor in determining the severity of a storm and its classification. A weather system is considered to be a tropical storm when wind speeds reach 39 miles per hour. Once it increases above 74 miles per hour, it enters hurricane, typhoon, or tropical cyclone territory. Hurricanes, typhoons, and tropical cyclones are all names for the same weather phenomenon—the only difference among them is where the storm is happening in the world.

Hurricanes occur in the North Atlantic, central North Pacific, and eastern North Pacific regions, while the same weather pattern is called a typhoon in the northwest Pacific. In the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific, the more generic “tropical cyclone” term is used to describe severe storms no matter how strong the winds are.

Why is the Caribbean prone to hurricanes?

The Caribbean’s unique geography makes it vulnerable to storms. The region’s warm water and high humidity result in wet summer months. As warm air evaporates and rises, it irritates the ocean’s surface and quickly results in thunderstorms, as well as tropical storms. Warm water keeps hurricanes active—something you can certainly find a lot of in this region.

In very simplified terms, think of a hurricane as a massive group of thunderstorms concentrated in a single area. When high amounts of rainfall combine with strong winds, an influx of water can be kicked inland. But as soon as tumultuous weather systems hit land and begin to cool off, you often see storms start to slow.

When is hurricane season in the Caribbean?

According to the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) , hurricane season in the Caribbean runs from June 1 through November 30 and normally peaks in August and September . The Caribbean region is within the Atlantic hurricane basin, whose storms also affect Florida and other parts of the coastal southern United States. In 2022, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) counted 17 named storms that passed through the Caribbean, and in 2023 this increased to 20. Its 2024 prediction: an 85 percent chance of an above-normal hurricane season and 17 to 25 named storms, of which eight to 13 are forecast to become hurricanes.

To be better prepared, check for updates from the National Hurricane Center before your trip. This NWS division tracks and predicts weather in the tropics and issues hurricane warnings and updates on weather conditions across the Atlantic Ocean up to 48 hours in advance.

Even if there are no reports of hurricanes in the weather forecast, you may experience some rain and tough weather patterns at your destination. Be prepared and take your best waterproof luggage , pack a rain jacket , and consider bringing a dry bag, like those by Sea to Summit , to keep important items like your camera and wallet dry while out and about.

The best places in the Caribbean during hurricane season

The southern Caribbean islands closest to South America typically see fewer storms and are generally considered the best options to visit during hurricane season. They include:

  • Aruba , Bonaire , and Curaçao , which are world-class scuba diving destinations collectively known as the ABC Islands
  • Barbados , whose capital, Bridgetown, is a UNESCO World Heritage site
  • Trinidad and Tobago, popular for music and culture
  • Grenada , known for its beaches and rum distilleries and located off the coast of Venezuela, outside of the Caribbean hurricane belt

Although not an island, the Central American country of Belize , whose coastline borders the Caribbean Sea, is another alternative in the region, since its location keeps it relatively protected from the worst hurricane activity.

It’s more affordable to visit the Caribbean from June to November

If you’re willing to travel during this time of year, you can expect lower hotel fares and smaller crowds. Airlines and hotels don’t explicitly market “hurricane rates,” but shoulder season can be one of the most affordable times to visit the Caribbean, with flight deals and discount resort offers in abundance. (Some islanders even take advantage of deals themselves to travel within the Caribbean.)

To keep an eye on flight deals , set up an alert in Google Flights or sign up for a deal newsletter such as Going , which regularly shares affordable flights to the Caribbean and other destinations.

Although many hotels close for annual maintenance for a few weeks or months, they’re open much of the season—look for fall promotions.

Buy travel insurance before you go

And in case things do go sideways, it’s best to be prepared. Purchase travel insurance that includes NOAA warnings and alerts for tropical storms. Most travel insurance policies also cover cancellations if a destination is deemed uninhabitable—as long as the policy was purchased before a hurricane or tropical storm was named. Sites like InsureMyTrip.com , which casts a wide net, and TravelInsurance.com , which offers tighter, more curated lists, let you shop and compare for the best travel insurance policies. Trip cancellation or interruption due to inclement weather and natural disasters, both at home and your destination, is covered under World Nomads ’ standard and more premium “explorer” plans.

According to Stan Sandberg, cofounder of TravelInsurance.com , purchasing a travel insurance plan is a necessary precaution to take , and it’s more affordable than most think. “You can get high-quality coverage for what amounts to the cost of a nice dinner out on vacation,” Sandberg says.

While prices vary depending on destination, trip cost, desired benefits, and even travelers’ ages and residences, travel insurance costs between 3 and 10 percent of the trip being covered—around $100 or $200 for a couple planning a $2,000 vacation.

Consider booking a cruise

Cruise ships will reroute when they receive storm warnings, meaning that unless you had your heart set on a particular island, your vacation will be virtually unaffected by unexpected storms. Caribbean cruise line options range from the high-luxury small ships of Silversea , Seabourn , and Azamara to the big vessels of Celebrity , Carnival , and NCL .

What to do if a hurricane strikes

If you booked a trip—and didn’t buy travel insurance—don’t panic if a hurricane hits. “In the Caribbean, we’ve become experienced at dealing with the impact of storms. We know as soon as any system forms and have pretty accurate predictions as to ETAs,” says Johnson JohnRose, former communications specialist for the Caribbean Tourism Organization . Local governments and hotels keep a close eye on storms’ development and have detailed activation plans in place for evacuating or sheltering guests.

If an impending storm looks serious, hotels and airlines often let guests cancel or reschedule without penalties. Ask about policies when you book travel, and if trouble seems to be looming, ask again about your options. “We are regularly made aware of instances where guest satisfaction levels increase during a storm,” says Comito of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association. “They are well taken care of by the resort and staff.”

Perhaps the most iconic sight of the region is the dual Pitons of St. Lucia, where you can hike to the summit or admire them from afar while lounging beachside.

Rich Foodie Experiences

Mouthwatering flavors and fresh-caught seafood await in the Southern Caribbean islands. In Antigua, board a catamaran and indulge in a fresh lobster lunch. Visit the private home and garden of a famous Antiguan chef, who will teach you how to cook Caribbean cuisine at home. Try a chocolate-making class at a cocoa plantation in Castries, or explore St. George’s local markets to discover why Grenada is known as “Spice Island.”

Featured Ports

Oranjestad, aruba.

In Aruba’s colorful capital city, brightly painted architecture in the Dutch style stands alongside 19th-century military fortifications, juxtaposed with a backdrop of aquamarine waters. Learn the history of Aruba at the Museo Historico. Climb to the top of Hooiberg, the town’s volcanic peak, for expansive island views. Top it all off with a swim at Eagle Beach or a kayak excursion along the secluded Mangel Halto.

Bridgetown, Barbados

Barbados is a favorite port of call for beach lovers and watersports enthusiasts. Swim above shipwrecks, cruise along the coast in a catamaran, or snorkel amongst curious sea turtles. Eco adventures abound, from exploring Harrison’s Cave with an expert guide to watching green monkeys roam through the forest. Whether you prefer your rum straight up or in a tropical cocktail, a tasting of the famous Mount Gay variety is a must.

Castries, Saint Lucia

The dual Pitons of Castries are one of its signature sights, of course, but there’s also a wealth of outdoorsy activities waiting in St. Lucia. After an active afternoon seeing the Pitons, lounge at Sugar Beach nearby. Downtown, shop a bit at the Castries Market for spices and handmade St. Lucian goods. If you’re craving rejuvenation during your time in Saint Lucia, head to the Sulphur Springs for a restorative mud bath.
