15 Ideas To Go on a Solo Ski Trip and Enjoy It Fully

Are you about to go on a holiday by yourself? No worries! Whether you enjoy your own company or your friends have stood you up, I hold all the cards to make sure you have a wonderful trip. It’s time for the best ideas to fully enjoy a solo ski trip.

UCPA

Do you like working out ? Then the UCPA is made for you. The Union Nationale des Centres Sportifs de Plein Air will be absolutely delighted to welcome you during your next holiday .

All year round, you’ll be able to choose some of various destinations and programs , depending on your preferences and availability. Downhill skiing or snowboarding, ice skating, backcountry skiing or dog sledding: there’s something for everyone .

Some destinations are intended for young adults over 18 , until the age of 40 or even 55 , depending on the activities.

With the UCPA, you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for. However, you may have to spend a great deal of money if you want to apply for a UCPA program since the fees are a bit high.

You are likely to meet a greater number of youngsters and young adults during your stay. Indeed, the atmosphere resembles that of a summer camp . Nonetheless, people under the age of 55, being with people younger than them doesn’t bother them, can get their satisfaction by meeting nice fellows.

Ski Lessons

ski lessons

Another great means to end your solitude in a ski resort is to sign up for classes.

No matter if you’re a beginner or an expert , follow some lessons to learn the basics or discover a new sport. You’ll be able to have a few words with the other students and maybe the opportunity to go skiing with them on the tracks later in the day.

This solution is a good compromise for those who are looking for a little bit of social interaction without being completely overwhelmed.

cleec

Your friends can’t take some days off but you still want to leave? Cleec is your solution.

The concept is pretty simple, click on the “ activités ” tab, then post a message in the forum dedicated to the activity you’ve chosen. Now, you just have to wait for someone to answer favorably. Otherwise, in the “ partenaires ” tab, you’ll find all the people who are looking for a sports partner . Tell when you’re available and where you work out, then jump right in by sending a message!

The website is particularly useful for people trying to connect with users who share the same sport interest , whether it is winter sports or combat sports. In my opinion, Cleec is one of the best platforms to ask for someone to work out with you or go on a ski trip in the mountains.

The only problems would be the numerous ads and other spams the forum is overflowing with.

Websites to Find a Fellow Traveler

travel buddy

Did you end up alone the day before taking a leave because your friends ditched you? In that case, have a look at the websites dedicated to finding a travel companion .

There are many of them on the internet! All you have to do is post a message on TripTogether , the forum of World Traveler Club or check the website Travel Buddies .

Finally, you can also leave a comment on the forum of a website dedicated to traveling and see who is answering!

On Va Sortir!

On va sortir

The thought of going skiing on your own doesn’t satisfy you? Post a message on On Va Sortir ! and see who wants to follow you to the mountains.

You can either go to the “ les sorties ” tab, then click on “ lancer une sortie ” to organize your own trip, or click on the “ vacances inter OVS ” icon to see what the travel agency Soloways already has to offer.

In both cases, On Va Sortir ! will allow you to meet new friends near your home and spend some nice time surrounded by pleasant people who share your interests .

The website is intended for adults between 20 and 40 , so if you belong to this age group, don’t hesitate to sign up for OVS to enjoy heartwarming moments. However, the site charges fees to have the right to use it.

Knockk

Created by French people, Knockk is an app that promotes the possibility of meeting people near your location.

Thanks to its interactive map , you can see where every planned event takes place. Check them according to your preferences and have a look at those who interest you best.

The app is free as well as easy to use which makes it a great alternative to On Va Sortir ! that now charges membership fees.

Anyway, Knockk is an ideal app to meet new people in your hometown or vacation resort . Feel free to organize a ski trip or go downtown, if you’re staying in a ski resort and nothing interesting has happened yet. With Knockk you’ll certainly have fun!

Yepngo

The Yepngo app works in the same way as Knockk. it’s free and easy to use, it’s a great way to make new friends.

You don’t want to go on vacation alone ? Set a participative activity on the app or sign up for an outing! Since Yepngo works with geolocation , only the activities near you appear on your screen. All you have to do now is keep an eye on the upcoming outings .

Ladies, you’ll be glad to read that you can organize women-only events to spend peaceful moments. So if you’d like to set a snowshoeing female-only trip in Chamonix, please do.

Yepngo is a great alternative to On Va Sortir ! but the application is rather intended for young adults .

Attending Events

Ski event

Never hesitate to attend the events organized by the ski resort you plan on going to. It’s the best way to get acquainted with other people and have a nice time.

Tartiflette evenings, 1990’s themed party… everything’s an excuse to go meet your future friends .

Travelers are generally in a good mood, open to discussion and inclined to enjoy the present moment. In this way, you can break out of your solitude , if it’s too much, during a congenial lunch.

Meetup

Meetup is the perfect platform to organize events and create groups around a common theme .

Write the activity that you’d like to participate in, choose the city and see the results. You also have the possibility to join a group , depending on which you prefer.

Multiple events are organized by ski resorts on this kind of website, so keep a close eye not to miss anything! No matter where you are, whether you go skiing in France or Switzerland, Meetup will help you meet people that are looking for the same thing as you thanks to nice activities.

Eventbrite

Eventbrite is the same as Meetup. The website identifies all the events that take place near your city -your only job is to pick a few one from the list! It is very likely that your ski resort hosts some of these activities, so don’t hesitate to go.

Once you’ve chosen the event that has caught your attention, the place, date, hour, price and description appear on your screen. Click on “sign in” to participate.

You can also organize your own event -a ski trip for example- on Eventbrite. Given the wide range of events , you’ll find something to keep you busy and have you meet new people .

Couchsurfing

couchsurfing

One of the most popular accommodation solutions amongst young (and not so young) travelers during a solo trip is definitely couchsurfing . The name of this concept originally comes from the name of the website which has made couchsurfing quite famous.

This solution is not only cost friendly since you sleep at someone’s home for free, but also an opportunity to meet incredible people . The shyest ones will probably be appalled by the idea of being hosted by a complete stranger. However, it can be a good way to get out of your comfort zone .

You just have to enter the name of the city you want to stay in and then start searching for all the people likely to host you in their home. Once you’ve found a trustworthy person , message them!

Several couchsurfing websites exist , among them BeWelcome which I’ve already tried. Now that the original couchsurfing website charges a some money to be used, BeWelcome is a great free solution .

Those websites are easy to use, however, they are better suited for short stays . Indeed, most of the hosts only wish to welcome couchsurfers for a few nights (2 to 3).

So think ahead of your skiing trip if any hosts are inclined to welcome you in their home, since not every city has users of couchsurfing platforms.

Hostel

Who hasn’t heard of hostels? No one, which is exactly the reason why they are included on this list. As they’ve become more and more famous throughout the decades, you absolutely have to try hostels when on a solo trip , whether in France or abroad .

As a matter of fact, young people rather go to hostels because of their affordable prices and the friendly atmosphere that prevails. They are the best way to meet future skiing partners . Indeed, many hostels are located in the mountains, so you’ll necessarily find people to spend time with.

In a dormitory or in a single bedroom, choose what suits you best to enjoy your winter vacation fully.

Partirseul.com

Partirseul.com

This website is mostly aimed at adults over 40 who don’t wish to travel alone during a holiday and want to meet new people .

Partirseul.com offers to solo people, whether they be single or not, to go on vacation as small groups to the destination of their choice. There are several ski trips , so you can choose the one which most pleases you.

You’ll get to know more about your co-travelers throughout the holiday. Maybe they will become your friends at the end of your stay!

Célivacances

célivacances

The Célivacances website is similar to partirseul.com . The concept is to offer single people a large choice of trips, whether they are widows, divorced, single parents, unmarried, etc.

The “célivoyages” are made to encourage love encounters or a friendly meeting between travelers. The stays are organized by age groups and aim to welcome as many women as there are men to reach parity . If the gap is too big, a discount is offered to put things back on an even keel.

The website has a wide range of theme stays, some are even tailored for single-parent families . Everybody is welcome!

Sportpartner

sportpartner

Sportpartner works the same way as Cleec. Thanks to this website, you can meet the users who share your passions .

Would you like to break out of your solitude by finding a skiing partner? Then sportpartner is the platform that will help you reach your goal.

When you create your profile, you can indicate your sports preferences , your age, the location where you work out and the type of person you’re looking for. Profiles are carefully investigated to avoid fakes and your personal data is protected, so the website is relatively safe .

Nevertheless, if you want to access interesting options such as “having a conversation”, you have to become a premium member. It means taht you have to pay €5.95 each month over 6 months . Moreover, it’s important to keep in mind that some people on the website are interested in meeting a life partner . So, make sure to clarify your intentions right at the beginning.

WORK FACILITIES

If you have to check-in with work, Chalet Flori has a discreet, dedicated work space and superfast broadband.

TOP LOCATION

Morzine: bucket-list destination for skiing, snowboarding and more.

Our Chalets

Luxury accommodation.

Three unique properties in one idyllic Alpine setting.  Chalet Flori  and  Apartment Flori  have been purpose-designed to offer the perfect balance of work and relaxation.  Mélodie sous Bois  offers a self-catered alternative nearby and is equally well-placed to showcase the best of the mountain landscape and the resort’s amenities. When you return from the slopes, relax in the hot tub on the sun terrace.

Chalet Basic Facts

Single bedrooms available, seven bedrooms on four floors, outdoor hot tub, optional studio apartment, superfast broadband, large ski room, up to 17 guests, sun terrace, off-road parking, our solo ski holidays might be for you if you want..., freedom to carve your own path and ski alone when you want to, opportunities to meet friendly, like-minded adventurers, the choice to book different room types and configurations, to check-in with work via our superfast broadband, to explore the biggest and best ski area in europe, who comes to heyday chalet as a solo skier.

There are so many reasons why single skiers and solo snowboarders choose Heyday Chalet in Morzine. Here are just a few of the types of independent travellers you’ll meet here.

Total freedom to discover the world at your own pace in your own way. Independent travellers are often attracted to places like Heyday Chalet because there you can find a ready-made network of friendly, independent-minded people to share the mountain with. When you’re ready to breakout and do your own thing for a while, that’s totally cool too. Heyday Chalet offers single bedrooms, as well as twin, triple and quad bedrooms.

A lot of people who visit Heyday Chalet actually don’t ski every day of their stay. Instead, they use the chalet as a base to work remotely, skiing whenever they can and working whenever they must.

So the group wanted to ski for a week, but you can stay on for a few more days after they go. Pop over to Heyday Chalet and get yourself a few cheeky extra days before you head home.

Backpacking for grown-ups. They travel around the world, working wherever they can find scorching hot wifi. Living on the road, they visit cool places (like Morzine), staying for a few days or a few months. It’s called  coliving .

Heyday Chalet attracts sociable people. It’s a great place to go if your group is made of mixed-ability skiers and boarders. If you want to, you can team up with other sociable people in the chalet and share the mountain with other people of your own ability. Then all meet back up in the chalet and trade stories about your adventures on the slopes.

Yes, it often works out cheaper to stay at Heyday Chalet. That’s true for those travelling in groups as well as solos travelling alone. We keep our prices down because we want to build an awesome coliving space full of interesting and adventurous people. Luckily for our guests, that usually means a cheaper ski holiday than you’d get elsewhere in Morzine.

With a roaring log fire and rustic exposed beams, the dining room provides a great space to trade stories about your day’s adventures. Stop at the honesty bar en route to the lounge and while away the evening.

Heyday chalet - coliving in the alps.

The world has changed. Jobs which once had to be done at head office can now be done anywhere in the world. So where would you choose? When we started Heyday Chalet, we wanted to create a place for people to stay and work while enjoying the most incredible surroundings on earth. For us, that meant The Alps. It had to be a place where world-class skiing, snowboarding and MTB were right outside. Where an incredible day’s walking starts the second you open the door. Where you could go parapenting, hot-air ballooning, climbing or rafting — all before your lunchtime conference call. Welcome to Heyday Chalet.

Active Singles Holidays – No Single Supplement

SingleSport will find you someone to share with so there will be no single supplement. Almost all the rooms we offer are twins with en suite facilities not triples and quads that many companies use. As most rooms are built for shared occupancy we ask our tour operators to charge a reasonable supplement to those who choose to take a twin room for single occupancy.

In 2023/4 ski season we have single rooms as well as shared  available in Les Arcs, La Rosiere and La Plagne.

Kaprun, Courchevel and Arabba  still  have shared rooms available but singles have sold ou.

We never add the single supplement into the base price and then tell you it’s a single room without supplement unless it really is!

We Choose The Best Tour Operators

SingleSport is like a ski club, offering group ski holidays for  solo travellers. We are free to choose  holidays with whichever tour operator we think is best which means that we can offer ski holidays and snowboarding holidays for solo travellers in several resorts.

Whilst SingleSport does all the booking and creates the group your money goes direct to the tour operator so that your contract is with them.

Single Travellers

Winter Holidays for Single Skiers

SingleSport respects that you want to choose how you spend your holiday. We therefore provide different types of ski and snowboard holidays.

In Kaprun we have ski lessons all day to start the ski season off  in November.

In Courchevel , January and March we have ski holidays for solos with 10 hours of lessons included over 3 mornings so that no matter what your ability you can enjoy a social ski group whilst making sure you improve as well.

At Christmas, January & March   we will enjoy Club Med All inclusive hospitality which includes lesson/guiding for all abilities of skiers & boarders on 5 days with absolutely nothing extra to pay on arrival. You can choose whether to take part and as they return for lunch it is possible to have an easy afternoon if you wish.

In March we have our guided holiday in the Dolomites. You can leave the map reading to our qualified instructors

SingleSport Ski Holidays 2024/25

SingleSport summer beach clubs give a huge choice of activities on land, water and in deckchairs!  The price include half board, flight & all the activities.

Group Ski holidays and Snowboard Holidays for Solo Travellers

We do not travel every week because we try to have larger groups (30-80 solo skiers and snowboarders) to enable you to find like-minded friends who ski or apres or sun just the way you do, this opportunity would be limited in smaller groups. Some start early, some prefer a lie in. Some want lessons some do not. Some are technical sportsmen whilst others think skis are to enable them to join up restaurants and summer sun is best spent in deckchairs! SingleSport caters for us all.

SingleSport has a wide range of ages, whilst the majority might be over 40 there are many older and younger from 20s to 70s. Sport is a great leveller and we find that friendships have more to do with sporting ability than age, until it’s time to go out at night and that’s very different! Some curl up with cocoa (well OK wine then!) whilst others are out on the town.

Sociable Singles Holidays

SingleSport makes it easy to meet new friends. Before we leave the UK you will get a list of guests on your holiday so you can introduce yourself to those who live nearby and may share a car to the airport and parking costs if you are on the same flight. On our smaller holidays where we have 20 or 30 guests it’s easy to meet everyone in the hotel but in Courchevel where we often have over 80 guests in several chalets it is a social whirl! About 60% of guests are repeats and so they will introduce newcomers to friends they met in previous years. By going to lessons you get to meet guests staying in other chalets who ski exactly the way you do and who you can free ski with at your pace after the lesson. Of course there are drinks parties and other social events during the week too, you can party as much or as little as you choose.

Personal Booking Service Ruth, who founded SingleSport, still offers a personal service. Booking a solo ski holiday can be a risky business and everyone has different criteria and different levels of experience and expectations. Some people fly every day of the week on business whilst others may never have booked their own flight before. Some are expert skiers whilst others are beginners. Whatever your worry you can talk to Ruth on email or telephone before you book to make sure the holiday will be right for you. Ruth will know who has already booked and will usually be on the holiday herself to make sure that all the promises are lived up to!

[email protected], the ski and snowboard short break specialist, ski weekends and midweeks for singles and solo travellers.

Although we do not run specific ‘singles only’ ski holidays, we are pleased to offer a range of ski packages that are solo and single-traveller friendly.

These holidays are ideal for those looking to ski on their own, or wanting to meet people, and get to know and join other skiers on the mountain.

We are able to offer Ski Weekends and Ski Midweeks with a minimal single-supplement for some rooms, in some accommodations, subject to availability.

Le Grand Bornand – our favoured solos & singles ski resort

Le Grand Bornand is a charming ski resort favoured by us, because it is perfect for a solo or singles ski weekend or short break.

It is a thriving little resort, with lots to do and a variety of ways you can meet and get to know others, in both a skiing and social environment.

Also, it is here we offer our highest levels of service and support for solo skiers, helping anyone on your own to meet and find other like-minded skiers, where possible.

You can either choose to stay on a fully supported ‘Classic Package’ at our own sociable, friendly chalet-hotel The Aravis Lodge – or on a ‘Lite’ basis at Hotel la Pointe Percée or Hotel Floralp .

The Aravis Lodge – a sociable chalet-hotel perfect for singles and solo travellers

A perfect location for any type of ski holiday, but single and solo travellers really love the friendly, relaxed and sociable nature of the Aravis Lodge , supported by our own ski team assisting throughout.

The communal dining room, large bar and on-site ski room are all places where people meet and become ski-buddies.

It’s quite common for guests to leave us having made friends, and for them to return again for future ski holidays together!

Although we do not have any single rooms, we can offer sole occupancy of a double room for a single supplement.

Also, keep an eye on our Deals and Promotions page , as well as social media, as we sometimes offer the occasional midweek break with no single supplement.

Please contact us for further details >>>

Ski Hotels with minimal single supplement options

Two of our hotels have some smaller rooms that they are able to offer with a minimal single supplement.

Hotel la Pointe Percée in Le Grand Bornand has two such rooms, and Hotel Floralp in La Clusaz has one, subject to availability.

These stays are on our ‘Lite Package’ , including all the base elements of catered accommodation, full Aravis region lift pass giving access to both Le Grand Bornand and neighbouring La Clusaz, and airport transfers, but on a slightly more independent basis (not communal dining etc.), and without our own permanent team on site.

Please be aware that we are unable to provide ski packages for solo travellers to St Gervais, Samoens, Les Contamines or Arêches-Beaufort.

Ultimate Singles Ski Holiday Guide

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 17/02/2024

Planning the perfect singles holiday is no easy feat. The only person you have to bounce ideas off is yourself. Plus, you get to make all the decisions. The world is your oyster and this is the best opportunity to tailor the ideal holiday for yourself.

Skiing, and all the mountain top feasting, is a pretty social endeavour. And too often we find ourselves holding back on adventures because family and friends aren’t able to accompany us. But there is no reason why you can’t have the most amazing singles ski holiday. Socializing included!

Are you itching to get into that sweet powder snow? Or want to try skiing for the first time? This solo ski guide is going to help you do just that.

Packed with tips for a singles ski getaway and top destination choices, you’ll be in the mountains in no time.

5 Top Tips for Planning a Solo Ski Holiday

If you’ve decided to take the leap and plan a singles ski holiday – bravo! It can be daunting to head out on holiday by yourself. But there are a few things you can do to make it as care-free and fun as possible.

Check out my 5 tips for organizing a fantastic solo ski holiday.

1.    Book a Solo Ski Trip with an Operator

Planning a ski holiday can be a lot of work, especially with no one else to share the responsibility. Equipment hire, accommodation, lift passes and trying to squish your huge ski jacket into your bag can be  a schlep.

For a hassle-free experience and the opportunity to meet a cool group of single skiers, book a holiday with a solo-friendly tour operator. There are a number of excellent singles operators who specialize in tailor-made adventures on the slopes through singles travel groups.

2.    Book a Group Ski Lesson

Of course, this tip is aimed at beginners or people wanting to improve their technique. This is an excellent way to make friends on the slopes and find out some expert tips about the best runs.

Group lessons are not only a social experience, but they’re also much cheaper than private lessons. You can spend the pennies you save drinking an après-ski drink with your newly made friends.

3.    Get Networking

There are plenty of awesome apps, social networking platforms and forums that you can use to connect with like-minded skiers in the mountains. The most obvious one is Facebook, which has a host of ski groups and forums. This is a great way to reach out to people who are in the same area as you.

Check out some singles travel groups to chat with like-minded people, get inspiration and possibly even meet up!

4.    Keep Your Safety in Mind

One of the biggest benefits of skiing with friends is having a safety net in case of emergencies. Even the most experienced skiers should avoid going off-piste alone. Sticking to prepared ski runs ensures that someone will be close by if an accident happens.

Give the front desk of your hotel your number and let them know that you’ll check in with them at the end of the day. The staff will then know to take action if they don’t hear from you. Likewise, you should keep the emergency number of the mountain rescue service if you happen to get lost.

5.    Carefully Consider Destination & Accommodation

Before you book a holiday, think about what you want to get out of this trip. Are you looking for a relaxing holiday with a lot of ‘me time’ and some skiing in between? Do you want a social scene and a typical après-ski holiday? Have you got a tight budget or the desire to lavish yourself in luxury?

There are many unbelievable skiing destinations and accommodation options to suit every travellers needs. Taking the time to figure out your desires and the best destination will guarantee a fantastic singles ski holiday.

Best Singles Ski Holiday Destinations in Europe

If you’ve decided what you want to get out of your ski holiday, this mini destination guide will be the final piece of the puzzle.

Maybe you’re still not sure whether you want to be dancing to electronic music in your ski boots or getting a facial after a day on the slopes? These destinations will give you some inspiration.

Here are my top picks for European solo skiing destinations and the best accommodations in them.

1. Chamonix, France – a Luxury Getaway

There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t spoil yourself with all the finest things on a solo trip. If anything, it’s even more reason to have some pampered ‘me-time’.

This world-renowned ski resort sits at the base of Mont Blanc , the highest peak in the Alps. The mountain views are unparalleled and the ski-in ski-out accommodation options are an absolute treat.

For fabulous luxury accommodation designed for singles, try out Cold Fusion’s latest chalet – Chalet Arberons , 5 miles south of Chamonix. It is a ski-in ski-out property which is ideal as you can avoid long queues for the chairlifts and cramped busses. The chalet is kitted out with sauna, jacuzzi and outdoor hot tub, perfect for unwinding at the end of the day.

The surrounding village is picturesque and has everything you need. Bars, restaurants and shops are all within walking distance.

2. Bad Hofgastein, Austria – Intermediate Spa & Ski Holiday

Chances are that you have never heard of this massive ski area and that’s not surprising. Bad Hofgastein flies under the radar of ski destinations despite having 155 miles of off-piste across the Gastein Valley.

This makes it a perfect spot for intermediate skiers who crave a sense of adventure. And those who love a soak in natural thermal pools after a day of skiing.

The spa town is full of activities besides skiing, which is great for a singles trip. It has less of a ski-resort feel and more of a bustling atmosphere with a beautiful valley setting. If you’re someone who wants to enjoy other activities, this is a good choice.

Hotel Alpenhof is an excellent place for solo travellers as they have single rooms and you don’t have to worry about pesky supplement charges. It’s also a 5-minute walk to the Alpentherme Gastein thermal pools and has a sauna and on-site massages.

3. Sauze d’Oulx, Italy – Après-Ski Vacation

The Milky Way Ski area has some pretty amazing skiing areas and resorts. Sauze d’Oulx is definitely the liveliest of villages along this way and is an up and coming après-ski destination.

Not only does it offer  amazing ski runs, but there are also countless bars, clubs and restaurants to party the night away. It is a beautiful combination of a traditional Italian village laced with a vibrant international skiing scene.

Hotel Stella Alpina is perfectly placed in the heart of the village, with the Via Lattea ski lift right next to it. You can roll out of bed, nursing a bit of a hangover, and head right out onto the slopes.

With an on-site restaurant and continental breakfast, you’ll be adequately fueled and ready to dance till you drop.

4. Itter, Austria – Budget Ski Trip

Skiing is a notoriously expensive hobby and a ski holiday can rack up quite the bill. But Itter is definitely one of the most affordable skiing spots in Europe. It is a great destination for beginners and has a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Itter is part of the wider SkiWelt area and lift passes grant access throughout the region. So once you’ve gotten comfortable on the gentle slopes surrounding Itter, you can head further out for more of a challenge.

Keep your costs down by staying at Apartment-Pension Schmiedererhof . It is simple accommodation with everything you need. A massive bonus is that the lift pass is included in the seasonal prices and there is a 5% discount on ski lessons.

There is a free ski bus to and from the slopes and guests receive free entry to the Panorama Badewelt, with indoor and outdoor pools.

If you’re looking for an organised skiing trip specifically for singles check out Mark Warner Holidays . Several friends of mine have been on Mark Warner ski trips as singles and had a great time. And they have chosen to take Mark Warner ski trips again the following year – the ultimate sign of a good holiday.

I have to agree that the Chamonix region is one of the best! To be fair, skiing in any of the French resorts is amazing, and the people there are very welcoming to solo skiiers too - I'm sure you could just walk into an apres-ski in one of the restaurants and join a party! (Not during Covid, of course!)

Hi Maria - yes good point re Chamonix and skiing in general at the moment - hopefully this will apply again when the pandemic is over!

Solo ski holidays FAQ:

How do you book a solo ski holiday.

A solo trip can take many forms and based on your priorities, we will help book the best holiday for you. Contact us and let us know what you’re looking to do.

How much is a solo ski holiday?

Twin or double rooms for single occupancy do usually come with a supplement. The most cost-effective approach is to try and find a single room, either in a chalet , or more likely a hotel . We would recommend booking early to avoid missing out. Other factors such as resort, country and accommodation standard/type all play a part so get in contact with us for accurate pricing. The more flexible you are, the cheaper the holiday can be.

Can I go skiing alone?

Of course! Nothing is stopping you going off skiing on your own, but skiing offers a great shared experience for mixing and meeting a like-minded bunch. Consider signing up to group lessons or guiding.

Do be safe, though. For example, going off-piste on your own is a serious risk even if you’re highly experienced. Make sure you get a guide.

Where is the best place to go on a ski holiday solo?

The most popular resorts for solo skiers tend to be places that have a great town feel or inclusive atmosphere. It makes finding a ski group easier (if you want one) and having a true town, like Chamonix , gives lots of options for when you’re off the slopes.

Popular resorts for solo skiers are Morzine , Meribel , Chamonix Les Houches , Tignes (France), Zell Am See , Mayrhofen , Söll , Niederau and St Anton (Austria).

If you’re looking to interact with others, a shared chalet can be a blessing with everyone eating together and coming together in the evenings. Club Med ski holidays are also a popular choice for solo skiers - book yourself into one of the (included) lessons or guiding sessions to ski with others in the day then arrange to meet your group in the bar or restaurant in the evening.

Girl about the Globe

Making solo travel easier.

Solo Travel in France

solo ski trips france

France is a country in   Europe with chateaus and fairytale countryside and a long and dramatic history. Known for champagne, good wine and cuisine and picturesque old towns. Having visited France several times, France is a wonderful country to explore solo. If you’re planning a solo trip to France, this guide covers where to visit in France to help you decide where to go.

Discover which region to visit in France, which accommodation to stay in and the best time to go. All accommodations have been recommended by myself and our solo female community and comes with our solo female friendly endorsement. Happy planning!

N.b. For every booking made through this article, I donate money to projects helping vulnerable girls about the globe. Thank you for helping to make a difference to their lives.

I have visited France several times solo and loved it. Don’t let being solo put you off visiting Paris either. It may be one of the most romantic cities in the world but it’s definitely worth visiting alone.

If you try to speak a few phrases of French, you’ll be well-received in the capital. Be it talking with a taxi driver, a shopkeeper or a passerby, whose help you want to seek, start your sentence with an appropriate greeting in French. From my experience, French men can be a bit forward too so expect some flirty advances.

If you are in a big city such as Paris or Marseille, just be careful of pickpockets. And as with anywhere at night, avoid walking alone in dimly lit areas. There are plenty of walking tours you can do during the day (see the tours section). You also attend shows such as Moulin Rouge at night.

To meet others, join the MeetUp platform for different types of activities. There’s also a co-living chateau if you want a change of scenery for somewhere to live and work for a while. The Alps are also friendly and the perfect place to meet other visitors who go there for skiing and winter sports.

My personal favourite places to visit in France are Paris, Nice, Montepellier, Toulouse and Val D’Isere.

Working & Volunteering in France

If you are thinking of volunteering in France, Global Work & Travel helps you to organise internships in France and around the world. Choose to be an au pair in France, learn French in Montpelier, or tutor in France.

Places To Visit in France

France is divided into 13 different regions, one of them being the island of Corsica which lies off the mainland. There are so many places to see in France so in this article, I’ll cover the most popular regions and what they offer to help you decide which destination to explore.

solo ski trips france

The westernmost region of France, Brittany is traditionally rich with a Celtic influence. Compared to others, Brittany is a relatively quieter region with charming fishing villages, beautiful medieval houses and ancient castles.

Rennes is the Capital of Brittany and it is the most popular city of this region with many monuments, cathedrals and museums. Walk around the historic town of Vitre which remains in its original medieval state.

Or visit the town of Quimper for the famous Saint-Corentin cathedral and the Fine Arts museum. To view forts and a stunning 360-degree view of the Atlantic, head to the port city of Saint-Malo. Saint-Malo also has one of the most popular beaches in Brittany along with Carnac-Plage beach in Carnac.

The Celtic influence is also quite apparent in Brittany’s cuisine. Buckwheat crepe, caramel and chocolates are a must-try. Brittany is also known for its traditions like the Mass and several other local festivals.

If you love the water, t ry your hand at sailing along the rugged coast of Brittany for large currents and tides or for shelter from the Atlantic Ocean, sail the inland waterway of Rade de Brest, sampling the French restaurants along the way.

The Aulne River is an attractive cruising ground through the countryside and valleys to the picturesque port of Launay in Normandy. There are so many ports to choose from that you’ll be spoilt for choice.

solo ski trips france

Mont Saint Michel Abbey

Bordering the English Channel, Normandy can be described as a region with rolling hills and lush meadows. One of the better-known regions, Normandy’s cities are lively and the villages, picturesque. Marvel at the Church of Catherine in Honfleur, the oldest wooden church in all of France.

Just across lies Le Havre which is synonymous with WWII. This port city was totally destroyed in WWII but has now flourished with some great tourist attractions.

Grim reminders of this part of history in this region can be seen at the Normandy American Cemetery, Caen Memorial Centre, Sword Beach and the Atlantic Wall Museum, just to name a few. Take a tour to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the stunning Mont Saint Michel, a magical island and abbey that was built in 1874.

Bayeaux, Caen and Rouen are other popular places. Bayeaux especially as a base to visit the sites of the D-Day Landings.   Some of the most beautiful destinations in Normandy are Les Andelys, Étretat and Le Tréport.

Normandy also has an enthralling nightlife with many bars and nightclubs. It is one of those regions in France that never sleeps.

solo ski trips france

Île de France

The capital of France, Paris is located in Île de France, which means there is 99% chance that you will be dropping by this region. The romantic city of Paris cannot be compared with any other place.

The Louvre, Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower are just a few of the main attractions in Paris. But make sure to walk along the Seine River and visit the Sacre Coeur too. This Roman Catholic basilica is stunning.   Explore the underground passages and the Carmel Monastery of the quiet ancient medieval city of Pointoise in the suburbs of Paris, which dates back to the middle ages.

Outside of Paris, you can walk around the small town of Melun, see the Baroque French chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte in Maincy and explore its picturesque gardens. Or head to Evry to admire its contemporary architecture, museums and cathedral.

Also in the region, just outside of Paris is the beautiful Palace of Versailles built by King Louis XIV in the 17th century. And I can’t forget Disneyland Paris too if you feel brave enough to visit a theme park solo. * Read: A Solo Trip To Paris

Chateau Ambroise Loire

Centre Val de Loire

Primarily known for the Loire Valley, Centre Val de Loire is where French royalty once resided in the past. At the start of the 16th Century, the centre of power was shifted briefly from Paris to Loire Valley. Following this, it became a holiday hotspot for the royals and aristocracy.

This region has opulent castles with beautiful gardens and chateaus; the Gardens of Villandry are one of the prettiest in all of Europe. Many of these are open to the public and some have even been converted into hotels where you can stay.

For natural beauty head to Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Park in Montsoreau. Two other National Parks which are close by are Brenne and Perche.

Orléans is the capital of this region, built on the banks of the Loire River. This famous city is associated with Joan of Arc, who saved Orléans from English forces in the early 15th century. You can see the statue of her on horseback in Place du Martroi.

You can find wine all over France but the Loire Valley is also known for its wineries and vineyards. It has the longest wine route in the country with 1,000 km of beautifully landscaped vineyards. Other places to visit within this region are Nantes, a bustling university city on the Loire River, and the medieval old town of Amboise, known for its Chateau d’Amboise.

solo ski trips france

Occitanie

Located in the southwest of France, the region of Occitanie has it all, especially nature, culture and gastronomy. Located close to the Spanish border, Cévennes National Park and the Pyrenees National Park are a must-visit for nature lovers.

Visit the 1000-year-old Fortress of Lourdes in the pilgrimage city and take part in the Marian Torchlight procession, an important French religious tradition that takes place from April to October.

See the picture-perfect town of Beziers which is a photographer’s delight or wander around the 7th-century village of Lagrasse. Then there’s the gorgeous pink city of Toulouse, the capital of this region; where you can wander through the pink streets and the canal soaking in the relaxing ambience of this pretty city.

The university town of Montpellier is also within this region. This town oozes charm, especially within the historic centre where you can lose yourself wandering the Medieval streets. See Place de la Comedie and walk up to Place du Peyrou past the Arc de Triomphe and the chateau d’eau (the pretty water tower). From Montpellier, you can travel onto the Costa Brava too.

solo ski trips france

Nice Harbour

Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur

The region of Provence is like something straight out of a fairytale with beautiful lavender and sunflower fields. The quaint countryside is home to some beautiful Medieval abbeys including the Pope Palace in Avignon, and Aix Cathedral in Aix-en-Provence, one of the best-known monuments in the country.

See the Ochre Mine in Luberon with its vaulted galleries, explore the hilltop village of Camargue, or be part of a cultural experience at Carrières de Lumières, a magical place where audio is combined with visuals.

This is where you'll find the French Riviera . This popular area on the Mediterranean coast boasts some of the best nature and beaches in the country, with the beach destinations of Cannes and St Tropez attracting celebs.   Visit Nice for its quaint Old Town and stroll along its promenade or take a day trip to Monaco to see the glamorous yachts and the famous Monte Carlo casino.

solo ski trips france

Vieux Port in Marseille

The port cities of Marseille and Cassis are also within Provence Alpes. Marseille is an interesting city with a blend of cultures and a picturesque port. Walk around Vieux Port and see the fishermen as they sell the morning’s catch or just dine on some fresh fish in one of the restaurants soaking in the bustling atmosphere.

Take a walking tour here to learn more about the colourful history of the city and to see inside the stunning Cathedrale de la Major. For a great view of the city, take the bus to the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, one of the city’s landmarks set atop a hill overlooking both the sea and the city.

Cassis is the birthplace of the well-known blackcurrant liquor, Creme de Cassis. This cute little town has cobbled streets and the stunning Calanques National Park, a beautiful nature reserve where you can see rock formations and hike to your heart’s content. There’s a good reason why this French town attracts many tourists.

solo ski trips france

The island of Corsica

If it’s an island feel that you need, Corsica is located in the Mediterranean sea between France and Italy. Known as an ‘Island of Beauty’ Corsica is a mix of stylish coastal towns and cities. With a 1000 km coastline, Corsica has some of the most beautiful sea views in Europe, especially in Porto-Vecchio on the southeast coast.

Visit Bonifacio Citadel, the oldest fortified city on the island, where you can island hop and snorkel or dive at the Lavezzi Archipelago, or stroll around the old port of Bastia and people watch at one of the terraces.

There is so much nature here that the island is perfect for active solos. See the Bavella Needles as you hike through pine tree forests or explore the Sandal Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with hilly and rocky terrain.

Corsica is well known for its dance and music and every June, the city of Cali in Corsica hosts the International Jazz Festival. And you may even see the occasional music performance put on by the locals around the island.

solo ski trips france

Mont-Blanc (the highest mountain in the Alps)

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

And then there are the Alps. France isn’t just great in the summer season as the winter opens up opportunities for those who like the thrill of downhill skiing or snowboarding. Don’t let being solo put you off skiing either as this is a great way to meet others, especially at one of the apres-ski.

For those longing for fresh mountain air, there are over 300 ski resorts in France with many clustered around the Alps and the Pyrenees. The most popular are the Three Valleys, Meribel and Val d’Isere, (a gorgeous friendly ski resort where I once worked!)

Megeve sits on the Swiss and Italian border with a cosy charm that attracts the chic skier, or head to Annecy with its snow-capped mountains and a wonderful view of the Alps for its romantic old town, cobbled streets and turquoise-coloured lake.

Chamonix is a small mountain town in the heart of the Alps and a haven for ski lovers that attracts the adventurous skier. With slopes that challenge the experts and give beginners a taste of some real skiing, this is one of most premier ski resorts in the whole of Europe but it is worth the splurge.

solo ski trips france

Dordogne Valley

Other Places To Visit in France

There are so many more destinations to see in France. Wine lovers should pay a visit to the Champagne and Bordeaux regions. Plus there’s the Dordogne Valley in Nouvelle Aquitaine which is also known for its culinary heritage.

This beautiful lake is within acres of secluded woodland and is a must-visit for those wanting to try canoeing or a leisurely cruise along the River Dordogne.

You can even try your hand at fishing here, plus there are plenty of pretty chateaus to see. Then there’s Strasbourg on the border with Germany which seems to have its own culture, and Lyon, the second-largest student city in the country that hosts music festivals and theatre performances.

Tours in France

G Adventures France – France is easy to navigate your way around which is good news if you want to do independent travel. But if you prefer company for your trip, sustainable companies such as G Adventures offer tours to France combining the trip with other countries.

Their tours range from 7 days from Paris to Rome to a 26-day European Trail of capitals and cafes in France, Belgium, Amsterdam and many other countries. I have personally used G Adventures and recommend them for solos. * Check rates and availability for G Adventures France tours

Walking Tours – Walking tours are a great way of learning more about a city, meeting others and discovering what you would like to spend more time seeing in a city. They give you a good overview of a city and you can find free walking tours in most of the big cities such as Paris, Marseille and Montpelier.

The tours are donation-based so you give a tip at the end depending on how much you enjoyed the tour. I have used a few companies and really like Sandemans. * Check dates and times for walking tours

Get Your Guide   – Get Your Guide helps you to find top-rated France activities and day tours. Chose from a Louvre Museum entrance ticket, a day trip to Mont-Saint-Michel or Versailles. Some of the tours require a minimum of 2 people but there are plenty to book as a solo including a ticket to the Moulin Rouge cabaret show and it’s really simple to use. Just check the reviews, price and availability then book online. * Check rates and availability for France day tours

Accommodation in France

France has a variety of accommodations depending on your budget. You’ll find hostels in the cities and other accommodations ranging from 2-star to 5-star hotels including boutique hotels. It is common for buildings in Paris not to have a lift (elevator) so expect to carry your luggage up several flights of stairs.

Venture into the countryside and you’ll find cottages and holiday homes (known as gites) and B&Bs (chambres d’hôte). Plus there’s Airbnb where you can stay with a local or rent an apartment all to yourself. One unique place to stay in France is in a chateau; historically castles, a chateau can be a manor house, abbey or even a mill.

Below, I have included the places where I have personally stayed as well as recommendations from our Girls about the Globe community. For all other accommodations click on the link below.   * Check rates and availability for all accommodation in France

Best Time To Go To France

France is great to visit any time of the year depending on what you are planning to do. Visit in the summer months for sightseeing, laying on a beach on the French Riviera or hiking or cycling in the Alps.

The winter months are perfect for skiing and winter sports so plan a winter trip here between mid-December and March. The north part of the country does have a different climate so head to southern France for warmer weather outside of the summer months. * Read: Things To Do in France in The Winter

Below is a weather chart with the average temperatures that you can expect in Paris from January to December to help you to plan your trip.
