Want a live concert, a game show, and a musical? Watch ‘Six’ at Academy of Music

The queens of King Henry VIII and their ladies-in-waiting take the stage in Philadelphia.

Band member Caroline Moore as María de Salinas, a lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon.

In Six: The Musical , running at the Kimmel Center’s Academy of Music, March 21-April 9, the queens are the stars. British King Henry VIII’s ex-wives unite for a game show-slash-pop concert to determine which one had it worse. The opening song explains their fates: Catherine of Aragon, divorced; Anne Boleyn, beheaded; Jane Seymour, died; Anna of Cleves, divorced; Katherine Howard, beheaded; and Catherine Parr, survived.

Also on stage are the Ladies in Waiting, the four-person band backing the pop star queens’ punchy feminist retelling of Tudor history. Each member is named after actual ladies-in-waiting who served the queens. The band performs with the cast for the entire show, complete with elaborate period costumes.

Drummer Caroline Moore plays Maria de Salinas, who served Catherine of Aragon and held the queen in her arms as she was dying. “Maria was like the best friend to Aragon,” said Moore. “So I’ll wear gold eye shadow to kind of match Aragon, to make it more fun.”

Another lady-in-waiting for Catherine of Aragon, Elizabeth “Bessie” Blount, also served Anna of Cleves. Played by bassist Sterlyn Termine, she was a mistress of Henry VIII who bore him an illegitimate son. (Maybe Bessie should have her own song, too?) Lady Margaret “Maggie” Lee was part of Anne Boleyn’s flock, and is played by guitarist Liz Faure. Joan Meutas, who served Jane Seymour, is the keyboardist, a role that alternates between musical director Lena Gabrielle and associate musical director Jane Cardona.

Most of the band members had served as substitute musicians on Six and performed in shows on and off Broadway before landing their roles on the Boleyn tour. That tour stops in Philadelphia and other cities on the East coast and in the Midwest, while the Aragon tour — with a different cast, band, and crew — plays the West coast.

Termine, though, is a newcomer to this regal stage. She picked up bass in 2018 and soon met Janetta Sherrell Goines, the bassist on the Aragon tour, who connected her to Six ’s music team. “We were simply just friends, like through the DMs, because she was a Black female bassist and so was I [and] it’s not many of us out here,” Termine said.

“I got into musical theater because I wanted to be in a pit under the stage and not be seen,” said Cardona, laughing. Playing Six demands versatility for the songbook’s mix of pop, English folk, jazz, and EDM. The job also requires the band to be on stage each night — not in the orchestra pit — costumed and bedazzled to accompany the high-energy cast.

“If I was in a pit playing the drums, I wouldn’t be hamming it up nearly as much as I am,” said Moore. “I’m making a bit more effort whenever I’m hitting the cymbals and stuff because it’s a show.”

For Moore, Six was a bit of a learning curve. They had to quickly adapt to an electric drum kit, which is different from the kits they typically play. The tour’s instrumentation differs from Broadway, where a fifth player under the stage would provide percussion and keyboard cues when the queens struck a pose.

“There are these musical accents that are like, bam! And bah! Those lights are synced up to the physical notes that we’re playing on the keyboard,” Gabrielle said. “If we play the wrong note, the lights will not go … you have to be very, very precise.”

Keeping up the stamina can be difficult, of course, but the band says between the stellar cast and the buzzing audience, the enthusiasm is contagious. The musical’s feminism is a big motivator as well. “For me, just seeing the way the audience receives the message is really special, especially seeing the kids come dressed up in their costumes,” said Faure. “We didn’t have anything like this when I was a kid.”

“My favorite line is in Catherine Parr’s song, she’s like ‘I did all these cool things, why can’t I tell that story?’” said Gabrielle. Parr’s “I Don’t Need Your Love” resonated with Moore, too. “It reminds me every night that you can reframe whatever your narrative is … you can create your own story. There’s more to you than you think there is.”

“ Six: The Musical ” runs at the Kimmel Cultural Campus’ Academy of Music from March 21-April 9, 240 S. Broad St., Phila., 215-893-1999 or kimmelculturalcampus.org.

A HER-STORY OF THE SIX QUEENS

Catherine of Aragon

Remembered for… Her refusal to accept that her marriage was invalid; her faith; her dramatic speech to Henry when he had her brought to court to seek the annulment of their marriage.

Birth and death December 15, 1485 – January 7, 1536

Marriage One: to Arthur (Henry’s older brother), November 14, 1501 (aged 15) Two: to Henry VIII, June 11, 1509 (aged 23)

Children Mary, born February 18, 1516 (later Queen Mary I). Catherine also had two other children who died as infants, three stillborn children, and several miscarriages.

Interests Religion, sewing, dancing, a bit more religion.

Cause of death Probably a type of cancer.

Did you know? While Henry fought in France in 1513, Catherine was regent during the Battle of Flodden; when James IV of Scotland was killed in the battle, Catherine wanted to send his body to Henry as a present.

Queenspiration Beyoncé and Shakira

Anne Boleyn

Remembered for… Headlessness; bringing about England's break with the Pope; having a sixth fingernail.

Birth and death c. 1501 – May 19, 1536

Marriage January 25, 1533 (aged 31)

Children Elizabeth, born September 7, 1533 (later Queen Elizabeth I). Anne also had at least two miscarriages.

Interests Fashion, dancing, flirtation, collecting evangelical works.

Queen Links Lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon.

Cause of death Executed on Tower Green, London.

Remembered for… Headlessness; bringing about England's break with the Pope; having a sixth fingernail.

Did you know? Because she was fluent in French, Anne would have acted as a translator during the visit of Emperor Charles V to court in 1522.

Queenspiration Lily Allen and Avril Lavigne

Jane Seymour

Remembered for… Being the “only one he truly loved”; having two troublesome brothers who fought over the regency of the young Prince Edward after King Henry’s death.

Birth and death 1507 or 1508 – October 24, 1537

Marriage May 30, 1536 (aged 28 or 29)

Children Edward, born October 12, 1537 (later King Edward VI).

Interests Religious faith, obedience.

Queen Links Lady-in-waiting to Anne Boleyn.

Cause of death Hemorrhage after the birth of Prince Edward; her child with Henry.

Did you know? While Anne Boleyn was still alive, Henry sent Jane a gift of money which she refused, apparently saying there “was no treasure in this world that she valued so much as her honour.”

Queenspiration Adele and Sia

Anna of Cleves

Remembered for… Being chosen from her portrait and then rejected when Henry met her.

Also known as Anne of Cleves (the Anglicisation of her name) She is referred to as Anna here to distinguish between the two Annes & to honor the name she would have called herself in her own language.

Birth and death 1515 – July 16, 1557

Marriage January 6, 1540 (aged 24)

Children None.

Interests Staying alive.

Queen Links Anna visited Katherine Howard once she became queen and bowed down to her.

Cause of death Probably cancer.

Remembered for… Being chosen from her portrait and then rejected when Henry met her.

Did you know? When Henry first met Anna of Cleves, he disguised himself, possibly imagining some sort of a romantic reaction. According to a witness, when Henry kissed Anna, she turned away coldly from the hideous stranger molesting her. The witness, Lord Russell, observed that he “never saw His Highness so marvelously astonished.”

Queenspiration Nicki Minaj and Rihanna

Katherine Howard

Remembered for… Being completely used (and abused) by those with power over her.

Birth and death c. 1523 – February 13, 1542

Marriage July 28, 1540 (aged 17)

Queen Links Lady-in-waiting to Anna of Cleves; cousin to Anne Boleyn.

Did you know? From her arrest on November 8, 1541 until her execution three months later, Katherine stayed under house arrest at Syon House; in late January of 1542, an act was passed in Parliament that rendered it treason for a woman to become the king’s wife without “plain declaration before of her unchaste life,” meaning Henry could have her killed.

Queenspiration Ariana Grande and Britney Spears

Catherine Parr

Remembered for… Surviving.

Birth and death c. 1512 – September 5, 1548

Marriage One: to Sir Edward Burgh, a courtier, 1529-1533 Two: to John Neville, Lord Latimer, 1534-1543 Three: to Henry VIII, July 12, 1543 Four: in secret to Thomas Seymour, May, 1547

Interests Writing books, encouraging education, the Reformation.

Queen Links Catherine’s mother was lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon and Catherine was friendly with Aragon’s daughter, Princess Mary.

Cause of death Childbirth.

Did you know? Catherine was the first woman in England to publish books under her own name and in English. Queenspiration Alicia Keys and Emeli Sandé

The Phillies and Mets are playing in the 2024 MLB London Series. Here's what to know.

By Tom Dougherty

Updated on: June 7, 2024 / 5:58 AM EDT / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets are taking their rivalry across the pond to London Stadium , the home of West Ham United of the Premier League, in England for a two-game series this weekend.

Philadelphia and New York enter the weekend matchup headed in two different directions. The Phils have the National League's best record , while the Mets are spiraling down the National League East standings.

The Phillies and Mets have faced each other four times already, with Philadelphia winning three out of four in May.

Here is what you need to know about the MLB World Tour 's 2024 London Series.

What time do the Phillies vs. Mets play?

The Phillies and Mets will play a two-game series at London Stadium on Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9. The teams will split being the home team, with Saturday a home game for New York and Sunday for Philly.

London is five hours ahead of Philadelphia and New York, so consider the start times for both games.

If you're staying home, the first pitch for the Saturday game is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET. If you're going to London, the game will begin at 6:10 p.m. BST — gates open at 3 p.m. BST.

Sunday's game will begin at 10:10 a.m. ET in Philadelphia and New York and 3:10 p.m. BST in London — gates open at noon BST.

How to watch the 2024 MLB London Series

MLB announced  in December that FOX and ESPN would have the 2024 London Series games. FOX will carry Saturday's game and ESPN will air Sunday's matchup.

Phillies fans can also listen to the game on SportsRadio 94WIP and WTTM 1680.

Mets fans can listen on WCBS 880 or WINS 92.3 FM HD2.

How to buy tickets for the London Series

If you're headed to London but still don't have tickets, don't worry. Tickets are still available for both games on Ticketmaster.

Tickets for Saturday's game can be purchased here , and tickets for Sunday's game can be bought here . MLB is also offering fan experience ticket packages , starting at $785.

Fans can also buy tickets on third-party websites such as StubHub and VividSeats . At last check, it does not appear tickets are being sold on SeatGeek, the official fan ticket marketplace  of MLB.

If you want to head to London for the series but haven't bought plane tickets yet, be prepared to pay. A Google search  showed flights departing from Philadelphia International Airport on June 7 and returning on June 10 cost over $800 — it's cheaper to  fly out of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

How to get London Series merch

Fans seeking London Series merchandise can buy online  or at the Phillies ' or Mets ' team stores.

The teams are selling MLB World Tour and London Series T-shirts, hoodies, hats, jerseys, posters, koozies and pennant flags. The Mets' website lists a London Series baseball  signed by Jeff McNeil.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by New Era Phillies Team Store (@philliesnestore)

London Series merch is also available to buy online at Fanatics .

What to do if you're going to London

If you're traveling to London for the games, there will be plenty to do.

MLB will have a free fan festival at Trafalgar Square  from June 7-9. The festival will include music, merch, batting cages, and a chance for fans from the United Kingdom, Philly, and New York to enjoy baseball and London.

On Friday, June 7, Phillies legend Chase Utley (who said in 2019 he hates the Mets ) and former Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy will participate in a home run derby, and there will be a London Series Pub Quiz afterward.

Fans can also watch both games during the Trafalgar Square Takeover.

The Phanatic has already been through the area in London, walking across The Mall near Buckingham Palace and the Victoria Memorial – while dressed as a Buckingham Palace guard.

Phillies fans can also head to Philadelphia-inspired bar  Passyunk Avenue  in London. The popular bar will have a tailgate, bus tours and other fun events for Philly fans headed to England. More information is available on their website .

Fans can also follow " UK Phillies " on social media. The fan account is run by London native Dave Shaw, who became a Phillies fan in 2012 after attending a game in Philadelphia on the final leg of his backpacking trip across the United States.

"There are a lot of Philly fans based in the U.K. and Europe who are just as hearty as me," Shaw said on a " Gallen of Questions ."

Where to watch if you're staying home in Philadelphia

Not everyone can afford a trip to London, but there are plenty of places in Philly to watch the Phils face the Mets this weekend.

McGillin's Olde Ale House in Center City will host a London watch party on Saturday and launch a Doyle $1 dog day to honor John Doyle . McGillin's will have drink specials and serve its "Phillies-tini."

Founding Fathers  on South Street is another place to watch the games — the sports bar serves brunch at 10:30 a.m.

Fans can also head to Xfinity Live! , which will open early at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the Kenny Chesney concert  and Sunday for the Phillies-Mets' 10:10 am. ET start.

'Six' makes triumphant return to Chicago, every bit as electrifying and dazzling as it ever was

Reimagined as pop icons, the women of “Six” turn the party and the pages of history in a show with endless appeal whether you’re a Tudor scholar, a devotee of girl groups or some wondrous amalgamation of both.

The North American Tour Boleyn Company of SIX. Photo by Joan Marcus (0075r).jpg

The North American tour of “Six” has arrived at the Nederland Theatre for a six-week run.

Joan Marcus

From Shakespeare’s plays to history’s texts, the wives of King Henry VIII have long been eclipsed by the corpulent shadow of their royal husband. The brutally reductive rhyme delivered with thunderous portent at the top of the Tony Award-winning musical “Six” labels them accordingly: Divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived.

But that bit of doggerel is only the tip of the iceberg in the musical by Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow. In a breathless 80-minutes, “Six” reframes the lives of Catherine of Aragon (divorced), Anne Boleyn (beheaded), Jane Seymour (died), Anna of Cleves (divorced), Katherine Howard (beheaded) and Catherine Parr (survived), giving them the agency that evaded them in life.

In presenting the queens as contemporary pop stars and giving each one a killer solo, “Six” has the women sashaying into their own. Running through July 14 at the James M. Nederlander theater, “Six” is a fascinating history lesson presented with the vibe of a high-octane pop concert infused with the dazzle of a Vegas-themed coronation and filtered through retrospect of the #MeToo movement.

Polished to a high gloss by directors Moss and Jamie Armitage, “Six” remains an electrifying triumph some five years after its U.S. premiere at Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 2019.

With whip-smart, pop-culture infused lyrics, the show references everything from Lutheranism to the Spice Girls to 16th century portraitist-to-the-stars Hans Holbein to Tinder. Still, the show has more on its mind than salacious Tudor-era celebrity gossip.

The musical is structured as a singing competition to determine which queen King Henry (who is never seen on stage) tortured and traumatized the most. Each woman gets a song to make her case. The women decide that the winner gets to be lead singer. There’s a meta-twist at the end that has the potential to be didactic and clunky, but the cast sells it with mega-watt charisma.

We hear from the six in chronological order of their marriages, starting with a massive banger from Catherine of Aragon (Kristina Leopold). “No Way” swerves from rage and defiance to wrenching pathos inside the space of a few choruses. Leopold knocks it into the gods.

Cassie Silva’s Anne Boleyn has the giddy energy of a young teenager — which she was when Henry brought her from her home in France to his court. The fizzy, frivolous innocence she brings to “Don’t Lose Ur Head” turns the number into a wonderful ear worm. But like Katherine Howard (Taylor Sage Evans opening night, in for Alize Cruz) in “All You Wanna Do,” the number shows how innocence can be mercilessly preyed on and destroyed.

With the soaring ballad “Heart of Stone” Kelly Denice Taylor’s Jane Seymour unleashes a voice that could fill a cathedral. Seymour — supposedly Henry’s one true love — died in childbirth roughly a year into their marriage. Taylor lets you hear her sorrow and her passion.

Anna of Cleves (Danielle Mendoza) turns the heat up to scorching with “Get Down,” a stomping, strutting ode to savvy pre-nuptial agreements and financial independence. (Cleves got a castle and a substantial income of her own after Henry cast her aside for Katherine Howard.) As Catherine Parr, Adriana Scalice brings the competition to a close with “I Don’t Need Your Love,” a number that begins as a gentle, lilting lullaby that builds and crescendos into an anthem.

Carrie-Anne Ingrouille’s precise, bold choreography features a range of styles that you can easily imagine on a pop concert stage. Gabriella Slade’s gleaming, jewel-toned costumes — massively zhuzhed-up interpretations of the panniers, ruffs, and corsetry of Henry VIII’s era, topped by spiky crowns that look like weapons — are the sartorial equivalent of fireworks.

The cast is accompanied by the Ladies in Waiting, a small but mighty onstage band directed by keyboardist Jane Cardona and featuring bassist Sterlyn Termine, guitarist Rose Laguana and drummer Kami Lujan.

“Six” has amped-up the glitz considerably since its time on Navy Pier. The set features Gothic arches framed in blazing neon lights. Throughout, lighting designer Tim Deiling’s kaleidoscope of colors provides visual exclamation points.
