UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Iceland, the land of fire and ice.

Ever since the first settlers, the Norwegian Vikings, came to Iceland around the year 874, people have lived in the shadows of volcanoes and glaciers. Icelanders have learned to deal with extremes in weather, floods from the glaciers and volcanic eruptions over the past 1000 years.

Iceland is a young country geologically speaking.  It is located on the so called “Iceland hotspot” and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that runs through it. It’s known worldwide for its immense geological activity and large glaciers, and has therefore often been called the land of Ice and Fire

In Iceland, you can expect a new volcanic eruption every 3-5 years. Most of them are small and occur in volcanoes far in the highlands. Usually it doesn’t affect many people. But in 1783 on June 8th, a volcanic eruption becan that changed life in Iceland and the whole world for many years. In fact, the devastation from the 1783 eruption was far more widespread than Iceland. In Iceland, the fallout from the eruption was known as the “Móðuharðindin” (Mist Hardships) as the poisonous gases released by the craters were so deadly that 80% of sheep and 50% of horse and cattle perished, as did 20-25% of the human population.

The gases released by Laki contributed to years of unusual weather patterns across Europe, North America and Africa. North America experienced longer, colder winters. In Europe, the weather remained erratic, with the impact on crops in France greatly affecting poverty, spurring the French revolution in 1789.

All in all, millions of people around the world died in the aftermath of these historic Laki eruptions.

This was the largest eruption since the settlement of Iceland and the accompanying lava flow (Eldhraun) was the third largest on earth since the last Ice Age. Eldahraun lava is estimated to be around 600 square kilometers and up to 15 cubic kilometers.

The stories from when Laki was erupting, only 240 years ago, come alive when Trausti and Guðmann tell you about their own experience in the Grímsvötn eruption 2011.  Although it is not comparable to the Laki eruption, they share with you their experience on how waking up in total darkness and not seeing your own hands because of the ashes falling from the sky.  About the total silence because the ash was so thick it suffocated all sound. It is perhaps difficult to compare with the farmers in 1783.  They lived in turf houses and of course there were no information available about the situation.  Except, of course when they went to church on Sundays to get some comfort by listening to the pastor.  It is hard to compare to today’s people in modern houses with radio, internet and TV to get the latest news. Lakagigar eruption lasted for 8 months comparing to Grímsvötn only 8 days.

Lakagigar is part of Vatnajökull National Park.  On July 5th, 2019 Vatnajökull National Park was listed on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. The decision, was made at a meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Baku, Azerbaijan. It was confirmed that the natural environment of the Park and the Nature Reserve at Lónsöræfi have a unique value to humanity.

You will travel in a specially modified huge super jeep with experienced local guides.

Super Jeep is a four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicles equipped with massive suspension systems and tires ranging from 38″ to 46″ size.  Besides using enormous tires, these vehicles have reshaped bodies to house the larger wheels, extended suspension, and a special lift kit to increase the ride height.

What are the benefits of taking guided super jeep tour to lakagigar with secret iceland.

Lakagigar, also known as Laki Craters, is a volcanic fissure in Iceland that erupted in 1783-1784, causing one of the most significant volcanic disasters in history.  Here are af few reasons why taking a super jeep tour to Lakagigar with Secret Iceland can be a good idea:

  • Access:   The area around Lakagígar can be challenging to access without a super jeep due to the rough terrain and rivers to cross.  Super jeeps are specially designed and modified in Iceland to handle difficult terrain, so they can take you to places that other vehicles can’t.  This means you can explore more of the area, including some hidden gems that you may not be able to access otherwise.  A big benefit is to be able to start your hike on one spot and end at another as your guide will move the car to the end of the trail.
  •   Scenic beauty:   The Lakagígar area is incredibly scenic, with vast lava fields, volcanic craters, and other geological formations. The unique landscape is of an almost breathtaking otherworldly beauty with its rugged beauty and barren landscapes.  Your local guide will make sure you will not miss out any of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring spots in the area, making it an unforgettable experience.
  • Educational experience:   The Lakagigar eruption had a significant impact on Iceland’s history and the world’s climate.  A guided super jeep tour with Secret Iceland will give you the opportunity to learn about the eruption’s effects, the geology of the area, and Iceland’s volcanic history.  You can also learn about the efforts of the locals to restore the area’s ecosystem after eruptions.
  • Personalised tour:   Super jeep tour with Secret Iceland are with just a few people per vehicle, so you can get a personalised experience.  The tour guides are locals and are knowledgeable and passionate about the area, so you can ask questions and learn more about the place you are visiting.
  • Adventure:   Taking a super jeep tour with Secret Iceland to Lakagigar is an adventure in itself.  Driving the narrow and bumpy track with several rivers to cross can be a tricky thing, especially if you are not experienced to the drive in the wilderness and landscape is unfamiliar. The ride in the super jeep is super smooth and safe thanks to both experienced driver and the modified super jeep with specially designed suspension system and huge 46″ tires with extra low air pressure that makes the ride super soft.  You can relax and enjoy and explore some of the most remote and untouched landscapes in Iceland.  It’s an experience that you will remember for a long time.

Overall, a super jeep tour to Lakagigar with Secret Iceland is a great way to explore the area, learn about its history, and experience the Icelandic wilderness in a unique and exiting way.

The founders of Secret Iceland are the brothers Trausti Ísleifsson and Guðmann Ísleifsson.

They were born in the small southern village Vík í Mýrdal. They moved later to Reykjavík with their mother but always kept a strong bond to Vík and their aunts farm Efri-vík in Kirkjubæjarklaustur were they often spend the summers as kids.

In 1992, they started their successful business together as contractors for the City of Reykjavík. The main work was the construction of roads and sidewalks. The business started small but soon grew to be quite large by Icelandic standards with more than 35 employees.

In the year 2008 everything changed when the bank crisis began in the United States. Icelandic banks had become far too big for the Icelandic economy and as a result they all collapsed all as one. The brothers had a bad feeling about the Icelandic banks and started to retract the sails in their business two years earlier.  Many companies got bankrupted and many families lost their homes and saving in the banking crisis. The brothers managed to keep their company afloat but Reykjavík City, were they got all their work almost went bankrupted and stopped all construction, meaning the company lost all work. While waiting for things to get better something happened that changed the game.

On March 20th, 2010 an eruption began atFimmvörðuháls between the Glaciers Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull. The eruption was rather small and if you got a well equipped super jeep and had the experience crossing glaciers, you could easily get there by crossing the glacier Mýrdalsjökull. People were eager get there to see the eruption, so just a few days later the brothers had the idea of taking tourists to the eruption using the specially modified super jeep they owned together. It was very successful and people loved to see an active volcanic eruption. In general, most volcanic eruptions are dangerous but this one turned out to be quite “harmless” and “tourist friendly” were you could see it up close and people even tried to barbecue food in the hot lava.

The brothers had found a light in the darkness for their company. Going into tourist business with “tourist friendly” volcanic eruption in progress was a blast start.  This eruption lasted for several weeks but slowly faded out and stopped. Just two days later, Eyjafjallajökull volcano started to erupt. Completely different in size and power and was definetely not tourist friendly. The dark ash soon covered large part of Iceland and even caused problems in international flights. The fun was over. Airplanes were grounded all over the world and people were stuck on airports everywhere like in Iceland. Maybe going into travel business wouldn’t be so good idea after all. Maybe people would hate Iceland for all the problem it caused and Iceland was already not on the top ten list in many countries after the Icelandic banks went bankrupt.

Fortunately, It turned out to be the opposite. People were interested and wanted to visit this small volcanic Island in the north that caused all this problem, especially after seeing pictures of the scenery.

The brothers decided to proceed the project. In 2010 they decided to start a guided tours to the site that one of the biggest volcanic eruption on Earth in historical time took place. After all, you could say it was in their backyard. They know the area of Lakagigar as their own hand as they started to going there with the farmers when they were only 12-13 years old. Icelandic farmers have put their sheep on the highlands since the settlement and must bring them back before winter comes. During the tour, they tell stories about the old days when they helped herd the sheep on their horses and the how their father and uncle made the road to Lakagigar in 1964.  Today the the road is maintained by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.  It is still a rough track and is not suitable for smaller 4×4 cars.

Secret Iceland is a licensed tour operator, authorised by the Icelandic Tourist Board since 2010.

Highly recommended!

My son and I did the trip today with Trausti and the Holasport beefed-up Ford Econoline and, despite less than perfect conditions, had an absolute blast (no pun intended). Very freaky landscapes almost reeking of the violence of the 1780’s, coupled with stunning waterfalls, great walks and climbs

3

Stunning views

Trausti took us to Laki Craters and AMAZING waterfalls, completely breathtaking! It was an amazing experience that I strongly recommend. It was a whole day trip with many stops in some of the most amazing places in Iceland. Thank you so much for this experience, could have not been more perfect!

1

Fantastic tour!

We did the Full Day Laki Crater tour with Trausti (tour guide) and it was awesome. We got to see so much and it was a great mix of sightseeing and hiking throughout the day. There are places that they take you that are just divine and that so few people probably ever get to see. Would highly recommend!.

11

Breathtaking!

We (mother and daughter) just finished an amazing Raki Craters tour. There is no better way to discribe it but: breathtaking. This tour takes you to places you otherwise could not reach and are therefore less touristic but no less breathtaking.

9

Fantastic Day!

My sister and I did the Mountains, Waterfalls, the Moon, and the Beach tour. We managed to be the only 2 booked, so we had the tour to ourselves. We saw amazing scenery, and were able to take our time at each stop.

The best way to get into the highlands.

We lucked out. Our guide was the owner/one of the owners and had been born and raised in the area so was intimately familiar with the geography, geology and farming culture. He was a joy to listen to and we could ask him just about anything we wanted to about Iceland.

Secret Iceland  is licensed day tour provider authorized by the Icelandic tourist board since 2010.  Founders of Secret Iceland are the brothers Trausti and Guðmann.  They are born and raised in Vík í Mýrdal.

Let us reveal to you the hidden secrets of   Lakagigar  Craters .

Lakagigar is nestled deep in the Icelandic highlands between the glaciers Vatnajökull and Mýrdalsjökull . This is like entering another world like no other place on earth.  Some have seen similarity with the land of Mordor in the epic adventure film Lord of the Rings based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien yet so beautiful and peaceful in the middle of the mountains and mossy green lava.

Don’t risk your precious rental car crossing rivers on the rough track to Laki.  There is no insurance in the world that covers damage to your car when crossing rivers.

Crossing deep rivers and driving on rough mountain tracks are what the Icelandic Super Jeep was made for.  The Super Jeep was born in Iceland.  It’s a four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicles equipped with massive suspension systems and tires ranging from 38″ to 46″ in size.  Besides using enormous tires, these vehicles have reshaped bodies to house the larger wheels, extended suspension, and a special lift kit to increase the ride height.

Most Icelandic mountain tracks and roads (f roads) are just for larger 4x4 vehicles with experienced drivers.  They are narrow little maintained tracks and there are rivers to cross and sharp rocks and pot holes hard to see on the way.

Let your expert local driver guide do the driving while he gives you informative comments about the history and geology of Lakagigar.

Among the places we visit in the tour is Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, Fagrifoss waterfall, Tjarnargigur Crater and of course Lakagigar and the mountain Laki.

The tour begins in Kirkjubæklaustur, a southern town often nicknamed Klaustur by locals.

Many visitors to Iceland will find themselves in this historic location as they travel the South Coast; it is between the village of Vík Í Mýrdal and the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and is steeped in religious heritage.

Duration: 8-9 hours.  Total stopping/hiking time: 5 hours Available from 10 th  June – 30 th  September

We look forward to meeting you.

The owners and founders of Secret Iceland are the brothers Guðmann Ísleifsson and Trausti Ísleifsson.

They are experienced and certified local guides with more than 25 years of experience in traveling the Icelandic highlands on super jeep in wintertime and summer.

"We started our day trip to Lakagigar in 2010 to give people the opportunity to be guided by locals and travel in a specially modified super jeep to get the most out of the day with maximum comfort."

"Our father Ísleifur Guðmannsson and our uncle Reynir Ragnarsson built the road to Lakagigar around 1963.  It was made for the farmers to make it easier to facilitate the sheep collection from the mountains. The rough track is not suitable for smaller 4×4 vehicles and there is always a risk of damage due to sharp rocks, potholes and river crossings."

The track is now maintained by the public sector but only repaired once a year in the spring.   It's still a rough track and our Super Jeep is just the right vehicle to get there.  A muscular built up 4×4, modified in Iceland to be able to deal with the tough surroundings on the highlands and on glaciers.

"We promise you both informative and colourful explanations about the history and geology of the area and we will make sure this is a day well spent."

12 Magical Hidden Gems In Iceland

Fjallsarlon glacier lagoon.

Only a short drive from the larger and more famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is the glittering, iceberg-filled Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon. This nearly two square mile large lagoon is located just off the main Ring Road, so there is no excuse to drive past this site on an Iceland road trip .

As one of the hidden gems in Iceland, it hosts less tourists, so you will be allowed the chance to soak in the calm and stillness a natural wonder like this provides. Like many places in this wild country, Fjallsarlon lets visitors bask in the absolute power of nature as they listen to the icebergs dotting the water’s surface crash and break.

If simply being one with nature is not appealing to you, do not brush off this secret place in Iceland. There are other things to do at this location as well. It is possible to take a boat tour, which will allow you to get up close and personal with the icebergs that glide through the calm water.

If you are planning on staying in the area, be sure to check out Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon . Located only 12 miles away from Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon and close to many other noteworthy sites, this hotel in Hnappavellir offers a variety of room choices.

Studlagil Basalt Canyon

From one amazing natural wonder, we move on to another with this hidden gem in Iceland. Studlagil Canyon consists of towering basalt columns that will cause you to feel as if you have stepped into an epic fantasy novel. Looming, black, basalt rock columns are not an uncommon sight in Iceland, but Studlagil Canyon claims to have the most of abstractly geometric-looking stones, which can also be found at the famous Reynisfjara Beach .

Like Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon, this is a location that boasts the incredible power of the earth. Carved out over time by the glacial river Jokulsa a Dal in the eastern area of the country, this canyon is a secret place in Iceland you cannot afford to miss. You will lose yourself in the serene, vivid blue water that winds its way between the cliffs.

This is one of the best stops around Iceland’s Ring Road . If you happen to be driving in Iceland , you will want to ensure that you make time to see it!

Stay the night in the nearby town of Egilsstadir where you can find the sleek and modern Icelandair Hotel Herad . You will crave a comfy bed to fall into after hiking along this wondrous canyon.

Heimaey Stave Church

Located in the northern part of Heimaey, one of the Westman Islands found off the south coast of Iceland’s mainland, an intrepid traveler can find the Heimaey Stave Church. Constructed not long ago, in 2000, this church was built in the Nordic stave style and is the only completely black church in the country. Even if the coloring is a little too emo for you, you have to admit that it deserves to be called one of the prettiest churches in Iceland !

This beautiful church remains a hidden gem in Iceland only because of its location on a smaller island. Though it is only a ferry ride away, many tourists stick to the mainland and fail to add a photo of it to their Instagram feed. Luckily for you, though, there is a good chance you will get the church all to yourself when you visit.

While on Heimaey Island, look into staying at Guesthouse Hrafnabjörg , which will provide a homey feel and the opportunity to meet fellow travelers.

Mulagljufur Canyon

This next of the hidden gems in Iceland can also be included in the list of the best hikes in Iceland. Make sure you pack proper footwear and break in your hiking boots before your trip, because otherwise this just over three-mile round trip hike will be tough on your feet. Of course, like anything else on your Iceland itinerary, the hike will be worth it for the incredible views of Mulagljufur Canyon. With rugged cliffs, mountain vistas, and a streaming waterfall, this classical Icelandic landscape is certainly Iceland off the beaten path.

It is one of the prettiest canyons in Iceland and you really shouldn’t miss this fantastic hike! It is moderate and not too difficult for beginners, but it is uphill for half the hike. I am not an avid hiker and I am able to do it so keep that in mind when considering this hike!

Mulagljufur Canyon is located just southwest of Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon, so with good timing, it is possible to check off both of these hidden places in Iceland in the same day. As with the lagoon, you can stay at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon .

Nauthusagil Waterfall

Nauthusagil Waterfall is a magical hidden gem in Iceland that takes the word “hidden” seriously. Nestled in a rocky, moss coated ravine in the south of Iceland, this is not a waterfall you can easily spot from the road.

As arriving at this waterfall will take some time as well as scrambling over rocks, walking through water, and using ropes, you have to prepare yourself before committing to seeing this secret place in Iceland. As Nauthusagil Waterfall is beginning to get more popular, you may want to consider visiting soon to avoid too much foot traffic.

Nauthusagil Waterfall is located north of a fellow waterfall, Seljalandsfoss. Make sure to schedule at least an hour for hiking to and from the waterfall as well as additional time for posing for pictures in front of the mighty curtain of water.

Consider staying at one of the Brú Guesthouses . These atypical, square structures are lined up in a neat row in a field near Nauthusagil Waterfall.

Hjorleifshofdi

Hjorleifshofdi is a large, standalone rock formation found just east of the town of Vik. With a height of about 220 meters, it is a secret place in Iceland hidden in plain sight as it is not far from the Ring Road.

While many tourists might drive by without a second thought, any Star Wars fan should take note that this is also the location of a cave known as “Yoda Cave”. This nickname comes from the fact that right above the main entrance to the cave there is another opening that looks like the silhouette of a certain Jedi Master. The area around the rock was also used in the opening scenes of Star Wars: Rogue One from 2016.

Stay the night near one of the many hidden gems in Iceland as well as many other popular sites by choosing the Hotel Kria in Vik, which is a quaint town that can easily be described as one of the prettiest towns in Iceland .

Aldeyjarfoss

Located a bit farther off the main trek than some of the other hidden gems in Iceland, it is a shame more people do not take the time to visit Aldeyjarfoss because it is truly gorgeous. This Iceland off the beaten path location is a mighty waterfall that flows into Lake Myvatn, which, like Studlagil Canyon, is surrounded by black basalt columns.

Getting to Aldeyjarfoss involves driving past the bigger and more well-known Godafoss, so it is possible to see both magnificent waterfalls in the same day. In order to get to the secret waterfall in Iceland, though, you must drive a bit farther past Godafoss onto Route 842. It is suggested you use a 4WD vehicle since the last couple of miles are an f-road. After parking in a nearby lot, you will then have a short walk to the waterfall.

Try staying in Guesthouse Hvítafell in nearby Laugar for a rest before or after conquering the two waterfalls.

Hrunalaug Hot Spring

The next place on the list is not only one of the best-hidden gems in Iceland but is also one of the best hot springs in the country as well. If overcrowded hot springs are not your idea of relaxing than make sure to check out this secret spot in Iceland. While it won’t fit a lot of people, this hot spring is perfect for couples looking for an intimate and secluded location.

Hrunalaug Hot Spring is only about an hour and a half-hour drive from Reykjavik, so it’s great if you only have a few days in Iceland and don’t plan on venturing too far. It is found off Route 30, south of a couple more popular areas, such as Gullfoss and the Strokkur Geyser. Try to add it to your itinerary on the same day you plan to visit these other sites.

Just around the corner from the hot spring is Icelandair Hotel Fludir if you are looking for a place to stay nearby.

Viking Village Film Set

Next up on our list of hidden gems in Iceland is an abandoned film set that was built in 2010 to resemble an old Viking village. A small fee will allow you to wander around the little, wooden, grass-topped buildings. With craggy, mountain peaks as a backdrop, this village has the potential of making a fantastic photoshoot location.

You can find this secret place in Iceland by driving east past Hofn on the Ring Road and then onto a gravel road that will lead you to the private property where this make-believe village can be found. Just south of the village, you can find Stokksnes Beach , a moody, black sand beach.

If you are really devoted to Vikings, you can even stay at the Vikingcafe . Or you can also backtrack to Hofn for a larger variety of places to stay.

Seydisfjordur Church

In the adorable, fishing village Seydisfjordur, you will find another pretty church that makes a great hidden gem in Iceland. The pale blue church with a rainbow-painted path leading to it adds a pop of color to the town’s otherwise moody scene. With mountains set behind it and trees all around, the church is simply picture perfect. The church is also open for visitors to venture inside during the summer months.

Found on the east coast of Iceland, this cute church is about 30+ minutes off the Ring Road and can be reached by driving Route 93. If time allows, you should make sure to add the Seydisfjordur Church to your Iceland itinerary. This is another sight that is seeing an upswing in visitors, so it may not remain a secret place in Iceland forever.

Even though Seydisfjordur is a small town, there are still plenty of places to stay, including Hótel Aldan , a pretty black and white building with mountain views. This stop is in a great area and actually on our list of Best Places To Stay In Iceland . In this post, we offer suggestions for where to stay around the Ring Road!

Reykjanesviti & Valahnukamol

On the southern point of the Reykjanes Peninsula are a couple more of the hidden gems in Iceland only about a 30 minute drive from Keflavik International Airport. First, there is the Reykjanesviti Lighthouse. This looming white and red building is the oldest lighthouse in Iceland and appears to be the only man-made structure as far as the eye can see.

Down by the dark, rocky shore the lighthouse warns of is the additional secret place of Valahnukamol. Here you will find dark rocks jutting out of the crashing waves of the ocean. As a perfect photo backdrop, you will not need to worry about intruding tourists as long as this beach stays one of the hidden gems in Iceland.

If you are staying in the area, think about booking the Mar Guesthouse in the town of Grindavik.

Hellulaug Hot Spring

Found in the Westfjords area of Iceland, the Hellulaug Hot Spring is another geothermal pool that makes it onto this list of hidden gems in Iceland. With a close view of the ocean, this hot spring is a great place to relax which you will need after the long drive to get there.

From the Ring Road, you will have to take Route 60, for about three hours. Once you get there, it is likely you will have the place to yourself since this Iceland off the beaten path locale is not known by many and too far out for many tourists to venture.

The Hellulaug Hot Spring is free to enjoy, though know there is no place to change. Since there is no fee or official upkeep, make sure to do your duty to leave no trace behind when you pack up after your soak so it is clean and ready for the next lucky visitor. This, of course, is something you should do at each of the locations you visit in Iceland.

After chilling in the hot water here for as long as you want, you can stay the night in Hotel West in Patreksfjordur on one of the many peninsulas that jut out into the Atlantic Ocean.

After reading these tips, we hope you have found a few unique and hidden gems in Iceland to add to your Iceland itinerary.  Take time during your trip to visit Iceland off the beaten path and in the end gain a better insight into the country compared to the regular tourist. And have fun!

Northern Lights Hunt Heading back to Reykjavik, the exciting hunt for the elusive Northern lights begins. Your guide and driver will scout and select viewing spots to give you the best chances of experiencing the amazing display of auroras.

It is a delightful tour, combining some of the best experiences Iceland has to offer; the inspiring Northern lights and a warm, amazingly relaxing open-air bath.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much does a trip to see the Northern Lights cost? It doesn’t cost anything to see the northern lights. However, knowing the best spots to see the aurora borealis when they are visible takes knowledge of Iceland, which our expert guides have acquired over time. Additionally, tours like our Northern Lights Mystery tour, allows you to focus on capturing the best photo of the northern lights. At the same time, we do all of the driving and share the science behind the mysterious lights that appear in the sky.

2. Where can I see Northern Lights in 2020? Northern lights season in Iceland is from late August until late April. The darker and brighter the skies, the better for seeing the aurora borealis. With that in mind, February, March, October, and November 2020 are your best bet to see northern lights in Iceland this winter.

3. Do the Northern Lights happen every night? You need to have a clear night to see the aurora borealis, and so, it’s not guaranteed you will see them every night.

4. Where are the Northern Lights located? You can see the northern lights in Iceland, Alaska, Canada, Norway, and other places in the world. It is important to keep in mind that the polar latitudes have the best view of the northern lights. Anywhere above or north of the magnetic 55º with low light pollution is a good place to catch the lights. The 55th parallel north runs through northern parts of Europe, Asia, and North America.

5. How long do the Northern Lights last? Northern lights season (the time when they are most likely to be visible) lasts from late August to late April in Iceland. As for how long they last, when they appear in the night sky can vary significantly from just a few minutes up to hours at a time. During those few minutes to hours, the lights can also vary in intensity.

6. Where is the best chance to see Northern Lights? Outside of the city lights, with a bright dark sky.

7. Do Northern Lights look white? The aurora borealis can appear in white-gray color even the most common color is green.

8. How do I plan a trip to the Northern Lights? You can easily book a Northern Lights tour with us, where we take you to the best spot out of Reykjavík to watch the aurora borealis.

9. What is the best month to see Northern Lights in Iceland? The best months are February, March, October, and November, but the northern lights last from late August until April.

10. How do I take pictures of the Northern Lights with my mobile phone? You’ll need two things to make sure you capture the northern lights perfectly: a camera (even your smartphone will do) and a tripod. Neither your camera nor your tripod need be top of the line. You need to know how to get the most out of them. If you’re using your smartphone, these tips will help you get a great shot of the lights. If you’re using a regular camera you’ll need to keep these things in mind: Make sure your camera has a manual setting. Set both your camera and lens to manual mode so that you can manually change the aperture and focus. A wide-angle lens is preferable but not necessary. Having a wide-angle lens is a plus as it will allow you to capture the full scope and grandeur of the lights. Turn OFF your flash. Turn off image stabilization. Use a remote, self-timer, or an app to release the shutter remotely. Because you will be using a long exposure, even the slight movement caused by pressing the shutter can blur your image. And then use these simple settings to get started photographing the northern lights: Set the lens’ focus to infinity. Because the lights are so far away, you’ll want the camera to be focused on the furthest possible point. This can be a challenge in the dark, so it’s best to do this before it gets dark out. Using the manual mode on your lens, focus to infinity. If need be, use tape or a marker (brightly colored to show up in the dark) to mark the setting. If you end up having to do this at night, pick the furthest light source around (you can use a flashlight for this too) and focus on it. Be careful not to change the focus setting while waiting for the lights. As for metering, different cameras work best using different modes. For Nikon, you’ll want to set it to a matrix or center-weighted average metering, and for Canons use evaluative metering. Using manual mode, set the lens aperture or f-stop as wide as possible, that is the lowest f-number that your lens can go. Set your exposure according to the movement of the lights. For particularly active lights, 5-10 seconds will do, but for more subtle and/or slow-moving lights, you can try 20-25 seconds. Your ISO setting will depend on the intensity of the lights. If the lights are quite bright, start with ISO 800 and go up from there should the lights be dimmer or begin at ISO 1600 if they are dim and go down from there. In order to capture the colors of the lights as accurately as possible, custom set your white balance to Kelvin 3,000 or so and adjust accordingly.

11. Why do the Northern Lights happen? The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, are caused by solar activity, including solar wind, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections (CME). These are all forms of electrically charged particles ejected by the sun. It takes a solar flare about 8 minutes to travel from the sun to the Earth and collide with gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere. Due to variations in the Earth’s magnetic field and the dark winters at the north and south poles, the lights are more visible near the poles than anywhere else in the world.

12. What includes the admission price to Secret Lagoon?

Admission price includes access to the hot springs bathing area and changing facilities with lockers and showers.

13. Secret lagoon or Blue lagoon, what is the difference?

The Secret Lagoon is located in the fertile countryside of South Iceland, while the Blue Lagoon is in the middle of a lava field. The Secret Lagoon has clear geothermally heated water. The Blue Lagoon, on the other side, has milky blue geothermally heated water that contains algae and silica and other minerals. The Secret Lagoon is simple and quiet and local, while the Blue Lagoon is much bigger and more elaborate and offers steam rooms and spa services

14. Do I need to book the Secret lagoon if I would like to go alone?

Yes, we recommend booking in advance, since the capacity at Secret Lagoon is limited.

15. How warm is water at Secret Lagoon?

The water has approximately 38-40°C.

16. How deep is Secret Lagoon?

Secret Lagoon is not very deep, it is approximately 1 meter (2-3 feet) deep.

17. Is Secret Lagoon open at night?

No, Secret Lagoon closes at 20:00 during the wintertime and at 22:00 during summertime. After closing, there is no access.

18. Are there any other attractions near Secret Lagoon?

Iceland´s South Coast has many awe-inspiring features, including the beautiful waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss and the stunning Reynisfjara with its unique black sand beach.

Visit the top sights of the south and experience the amazing diversity of Iceland, as well as discovering and exploring various local secrets with an experienced guide.

This tour is “The South Coast of Iceland” in a pretty little package!

Tour highlights: Our special mix of popular sites and local secrets!

Join this fantastic sightseeing tour discovering some of the most beloved natural attractions found along Iceland’s picturesque south coast. This is a great opportunity for visitors to Iceland who have yet to explore this stunning region, as well as those travellers hoping to maximize their holiday time in Iceland.

The South Coast The south coast is widely considered to be one of the most picturesque routes in the whole of Iceland, a region characterized by its rugged shorelines, distant mountainscapes, and cascading waterfalls. From your vantage point on the tour bus, you are privy to this incredible scenery, gaining a real insight into just why Iceland is so desirable as a travel destination.

Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss You will be making a stop at two of the popular waterfalls found along the South Coast, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. These attractions are available year-round, making them a staple visit on sightseeing tours in Iceland.

Both waterfalls cascading at a whopping 65 and 60 meters respectively, Seljalandsfoss differentiates itself by being one of the only waterfalls in Iceland where it is possible to walk directly behind the water. This provides for some really fun, unique snapshots. Skógafoss is wider and more powerful than Seljalandsfoss, and guests here can walk right up to the point the water crashes into the rock pools below.

Black sand Beach Further along the South Coast, you will make a stop at the hauntingly beautiful black sand beach, Reynisfjara. Here, you can observe the incredible basalt stacks built into the adjacent cliff faces, and stand in awe as the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean complement this gorgeous panorama. You will also have the opportunity to explore the nearby coastal village of Vik before heading towards Dyrhólaey.

Dyrhólaey Dyrhólaey is a small peninsula that once stood separate from mainland Iceland. Now joined by a land bridge to the rest of the country, this promenade has become famous for its nesting birdlife, a dramatic rock arch, and stunning views. From here, you will likely be able to see the outlet glacier, Sólheimajökull, glistening in the distance.

We also visit and closely observe a secret ice cave when the conditions allow- this is included in the price.

Don’t delay any further! Join this fantastic sightseeing tour today and you too can experience the many beautiful attractions found along Iceland’s South Coast. Check availability by choosing a date.

Difficulty Ratings

Easy, moderate, challenging … What does this really mean? Below you can read the definitions we use for our ratings. We hope this will help you get an idea of the trip difficulty to make sure you choose a trip that suits you best.

Easy Suitable for most people in fair condition. You have to be able to walk on uneven surfaces and hike for at least 2 – 3 hours at a slow pace, with breaks. Trails are generally of good quality and glaciers travel at a relatively low angle.

Moderate Suitable for those in good condition who are able to walk for about 4 hours at a low or moderate pace. Trails are generally of good quality and glaciers travel at a relatively low angle.

Challenging For someone in good hiking condition and with experience of hiking. Trails are generally in fair conditions but some parts of the tour might be off track. Glacier/snow travel can be on uneven ground with challenging sections. Increased distance. We recommend guests have the ability to cover 12 km a day on rugged trails and snow.

Demanding Only a few of our trips are defined as Demanding. Hence most of our tours are rated Easy, moderate, or challenging.

Demanding tours are for someone in very good hiking and physical condition. Trails are generally in fair conditions but large sections of the tour might be off track. Glacier/snow travel on uneven ground with some challenging sections. Increased distance. We recommend guests have the ability to cover 20 km a day on uneven trails and snow. A significant increase in elevation and some technical difficulty should be expected.

Equipment list

Equipment needed can vary greatly from season to season as well as the length of your tour. The following list can be used as a guideline for our trekking, hiking, and longer Snowmobile tours in Iceland.

Try to pack as lightly as possible and take only essentials. Excess baggage can be a burden to you and to our support crew. Keep in mind that there are limits on how much your duffel bag can weigh because the weight restrictions on international and domestic flights are usually around 20 kg.

Luggage for Multiday tours and longer journeys with assistance vehicle An extra bag clearly marked with your name can be kept at your Reykjavik accommodation. Large duffel bag (60/80 liters) sturdy and water-resistant, not exceeding 15 kg Daypack (30 to 50 liters)

Clothing You will need to bring comfortable and adequate clothing to protect you from the cold and wet weather. Wool, synthetics, and wool/synthetic blends are good. We discourage the use of cotton, as this does not insulate against cold or wet conditions. When camping, tents are provided. You will be responsible for bringing your mattress and sleeping bag.

When layering, the innermost layer should be long underwear. The middle layer can be a synthetic turtleneck or wool shirt, and pants. The outermost layer should be a synthetic jacket, and/or a good quality Gore-Tex wind/rain parka and over-pants.

For quantities for each item listed, use your own judgment, based on the expected weather conditions and overall packing/weight restrictions for your luggage.

  • Regular underwear. Synthetics are easier to wash and dry
  • Synthetic or wool thermal underwear
  • Long-sleeved, synthetic, or wool shirt

Fantastic experience

"We had an amazing experience on this tour. Our driver (Elias) was knowledgeable and had the perfect balance of sharing information but also giving us time to reflect and enjoy the breathtaking landscape of Iceland. Highly recommend this company, tour, and driver!"

Glacier hike with Alberto Marini

"We had a private guided glacier walk for 3 active senior friends with Alberto Marini who is an Italian-born mountain/rock climber. Though cautious by nature, I felt completely comfortable with Alberto who apparently trained many of the other guides we encountered. He was knowledgeable about glaciers and the natural history of Iceland-verified by my geologist husband. Definitely worth doing especially if with Alberto."

Snowmobiling gone wild on a glacier

"We had a private tour with 2 couples to do snowmobiling on a glacier. Magnus was a very skilled ATV driver taking us on an adventurous 1hour drive to get to the glacier to meet snowmobiles. We enjoyed the vantage point even on a cloudy windy day to ride around to see the surrounding volcanoes. Quite a fun 3 hour tour."

Private Tour to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach

" We took a private tour from Hotel Ranga out to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. We rented a car but decided it was too far to drive on our own there and back in one day so we booked a tour with Southcoast.

Our driver, Stefan, was fantastic! It was a 10-hour journey (including a stop for lunch) so it was nice to have a guide that was a great conversationalist and very knowledgeable about Iceland. He answered all of our questions about Iceland and stopped at a few places we never would have found on our own.

We had a gorgeous day and the pictures we got on Diamond Beach were out of this world. Would highly recommend this company and this guide, especially if you're interested in a private tour. "

13 Hidden Gems in Iceland (MAP Included)

This post is also available in: Nederlands

Are you planning a trip to Iceland and looking for some true hidden gems? I got you covered! I can guarantee that these places will leave you in absolute awe and that there won’t be a lot of other tourists to deal with!

When traveling to Iceland most people only stick to the typical route. They drive the ring road and visit the main sights that are located right next to it. And while this is a good option, Iceland has so much more to offer!

While visiting Skógafoss and the glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón is a must, you’ll always be visiting these places together with a ton of other tourists. And somehow it takes away a big part of its magic. What if I told you there is an even more beautiful glacier in Iceland, and that you can have it almost all to yourself?

Keep reading this guide to find my favorite secret places in Iceland that are off the beaten path and less discovered by tourism.

13 Hidden Gems in Iceland

1. kvernufoss – a secret waterfall right next to skogafoss.

This beautiful hidden gem is a secret waterfall located only 5 minutes away from Skógafoss and is a must see when visiting Iceland!

How to reach Kvernufoss

Park your car at the Skogar Museum . From here walk to the right (when facing the mountains) and go around the hangar. At the end of the trail there will be a ladder going over the fence. This means that you’ll be entering private property but that the owner actually allows you to visit. So remember to be respectful, don’t leave any waste and don’t damage the property.

It would be a shame if because of this you can’t visit the waterfall anymore in the future! Once you’re over the ladder walk alongside the little river into the canyon. You’ll reach Kvernufoss after 10 minutes of hiking.

Why should you visit Kvernufoss

Just like with Seljalandsfoss you can walk behind the waterfall. Just minus the 300 other tourists. Sit down and take in this amazing view and the tranquility that comes with it.

2. Kolugljúfur Canyon – My favorite hidden gem in Iceland

This hidden gem in Iceland is one of my absolute favorite secret places in the entire country. I think it speaks for itself that on my last trip to Iceland I made a 5 hour detour just to see it again! The canyon is located between Reykjavik and Akureyri and is a must see if you’re driving the ring road.

How to reach Kolugljúfur Canyon

When it comes to following directions this one is pretty standard. Simply put in this location in your GPS. The last part of the drive is a non gravel road so always make sure to take it slower here. You can park either in front of the bridge or drive across it and park on the other side. Once parked you hike down across the bridge, either on the left or right. Always be aware of your surroundings when walking around here.

Why should you visit Kolugljúfur Canyon

Did I already tell you that besides a canyon there is a waterfall as well? You heard me right! You get two for the price of one here. When I visited this place in November we were the only ones there for 2 hours straight. This time around in the summer there were around 10 other people, which isn’t all that bad compared to other places in Iceland !

3. Ingjaldshólskirkja

Located on the beautiful Snæfellsness Peninsula, this beautiful church is often overlooked. Most people simply visit Búðakirkja and Kirkjufellsfoss. But this Peninsula has a lot more to offer and actually holds two of these hidden gems in Iceland!

How to reach Ingjaldshólskirkja

Ingjaldshólskirkja is located on the Northern side of the Peninsula and can be easily reached by car! There is a long driveway up, which is an amazing photo spot and there is parking at the top of the church. If you’re travelling with a Camper Van the best camp site to stay at is the one at Olafsvik . It offers a beautiful view of the coast and the mountains in the back are drop dead gorgeous.

5 Crazy Beautiful Hidden Gems in Iceland

4. Londrangar

Another gem that often gets passed up for it’s more famous counter part at Arnarstapi.

How to reach Londrangar

If you type in this location on Google Maps you will end up at the lighthouse. This is in my honest opinion not the best starting point. Rather park your car here . Once parked you simply walk up and be amazed by the view that lies before you. If you look to your right you will see a small pathway that you can follow down. Definitely do this and go take a look at the cliffside from up close! Also, the drive up here is epic!

5. Fjallsárlón – a secret glacier in Iceland

This magnificent glacier is now my all time favourite place in entire Iceland! Imagine this: you drive up to the parking lot to see it empty. You start a small hike up the hill and then you see it. A glacier so beautiful it actually brought tears to my eyes! I can’t emphasise enough on how magical this place actually is. It’s what I call: Iceland at it’s very best.

How to reach Fjallsarlon

Fjallsárlón is located between Skaftafell camping and the always overcrowded Diamond beach. It is super easy to reach by car. Just one turn off from the main ring road!

Why you should visit Fjallsarlon

I will tell you again. When I visited I had this place entirely to myself. And that doesn’t happen very often anymore these days. Just sit down, relax and enjoy the amazing view.

5 Crazy Beautiful Hidden Gems in Iceland

6. Thakgil – A unique place to visit in Iceland

This incredible place has flown under the radar for so far and I have absolutely no idea how that’s even possible!

Thakgil is made of spiky green canyons, icy rivers, black sand, volcanoes and glaciers. I mean, how can you not want to see this place for yourself?

How to reach Thakgil

One of the reasons that Thakgil is less frequently visited is because  there’s no actual public transportation  leading here. The easiest and cheapest way to reach this marvelous place is to self-drive. Otherwise you have to either take a bus from Reykjavik or Selfoss up until Vik and from there you’ll have to order a taxi to take you more inland.

So yes,  the best way to reach Thakgil is to go by car ! If you’re coming from Reykjavik you’ll have to drive about 180km on the Ring Road until you reach the cute little town of Vik. From there it’s another 5km east until you make a left onto the  214 . If you put in  Hotel Katla  into your GPS you can’t miss it. Simply make a left onto the gravel road and drive past the hotel.

Now, you better prepare for a bumpy ride! I’ve seen people doing this drive with a regular car and camper van but then you have to go very slow! The road is very rocky and bumpy and if you drive too fast with a regular car, chances are high you’ll damage the bottom which is never part of the insurance!

My biggest advice to you if you’re exploring places like Thakgil is to rent a 4×4 . My favorite company to work with in Iceland has always been  Happy Campers . And with their 4×4 camper van the drive up to the Thakgil campground went very smooth and easy.

Why you should visit Thakgil

Thakgil, also known in Icelandic as  Þakgil , is a one of a kind place in the south of Iceland. Arriving here felt like a breath of fresh air after facing all of the crowded and more touristic places on the Ring Road close by.

Typical for Thakgil are the  steep, mossy walls  and the many canyons. And compared to the immensely popular Fjadragljufur canyon you can actually roam around freely here.

7. Sigöldugljufur

Sigöldugljufur is one of those incredible hidden gems in Iceland that actually looks even better in real life! Located in the heart of the Highlands this canyon is filled with  some of the bluest water I have ever seen and has waterfalls as far as the eye can see .

How to reach Sigöldugljufur

Sigöldugljufur is located in the Icelandic Highlands and only accessible with a 4×4. If you only have short period of time to visit you can combine it with a day trip to Landmannalaugar . You can park your car  here  and simply follow the hiking trail across the road. Now for the longest time you’ll think you’re in the wrong place. But once you step a little closer to the canyon you’ll actually see its beautiful landscape instead of a barren wasteland.

8. Studlagil Basalt Canyon – One of the new attractions in Iceland

The Studlagil canyon is one of Iceland’s latest discoveries cause a few years ago you couldn’t even see this canyon. Important to note is that the water inside of the canyon isn’t always this turquoise. In fact after a lot of rainfall the water becomes grey and there will even be a current. The best time to visit the Studlagil canyon is from June until August.

How to reach Studlagil Canyon

There are two parking lots but it’s only from the one on the East Side that you can access the canyon itself.

The other parking lot on the West Side will grant you access to a viewing platform.

From the East side parking lot, which is right next to a waterfall, it only takes the 40 minutes to reach the actual canyon!

Why you should visit Studlagil Canyon

The Studlagil canyon is gaining more and more popularity each year and if youplan your visit in the middle of the day you’ll already see a ton of other tourists. The best idea is to visit this place in the early morning or later in the evening.

9. Klifbrekkufoss

Klifbrekkufoss is one of Iceland’s local secrets and you don’t need to calculate in a lot of extra time to visit this place cause it’s right next to the road that leads into the peninsula.

How to reach Klifbrekkufoss

Klifbrekkufoss is located on one of the Eastern fjords in Iceland. The best part is that it’s actually super easy to reach! Simply drive down the road and park your car in the designated parking space. One thing you do have to keep in mind is that the top of the fjord can be extremely clouded and you’ll be driving through thick fog. So take it slow and be careful on your way down.

Why you should visit Klifbrekkufoss

Klifbrekkufoss is not necessarily the biggest waterfall in Iceland but what makes it so impressive is the endless amount of layers that make up this waterfall!

10. Aldeyjarfoss

Aldeyarfoss is another unique place to visit in Iceland and is tucked away in the Northern Highlands . The waterfall is completely surrounded by basalt columns which makes it look a little like Svartifoss, just without the hundreds of other people.

How to reach Aldeyjarfoss

Aldeyjarfoss is located along F26, one of the most dangerous F-roads in entire Iceland. But not. to worry, the part leading towards this particular waterfall is still okay and doesn’t contain any river crossings. It is however very rocky and bumpy and may only be reached with a 4×4. There’s a small parking lot and from there you simply hike down to the waterfall.

11. Kerlingarfjöll – The most famous unknown place in Iceland

One would think that an incredible place like Kerlingarfjöll is visited by everyone that travels to Iceland. But that’s really not the case. During our visit in August there were only a handful of other people there which made the experience that much more incredible.

Kerlingarfjöll is  one of the most precious natural attractions  in Iceland and is located in the central Highlands . It’s part of an active volcanic system and is home to one of Iceland’s most  impressive geothermal areas .

How to reach Kerlingarfjöll

Kerlingarfjöll is accessible via road F35, also called the  Kjölur Route  or Kjalvegur, from both North and South Iceland. The F35 is  one of the best maintained F-roads on the entire island  and from where you should drive inland totally depends on your itinerary.

There’s not a single river crossing along the entire F35 and only the last part that leads to the Kerinlingarfjöll Mountain Resort and the Hveradalir Parking is very bumpy and rocky.

Why you should visit Kerlingarfjöll

Honestly, in all my life I have never seen a place more mesmerizing than Kerlingarfjöll. There are several hiking trails so you can easily spend a couple of days here but you can also just spend a couple of hours and still see some of the most impressive parts.

12. Bruarfoss – a hidden waterfall in Iceland

This cute little waterfall might not be the biggest one out there in size but it sure makes up for it in beauty. The more unknown Brúarfoss is actually also located on the infamous Golden Circle but because it takes 1 hour of hiking to reach it not a lot of people visit it. So if you want to go  a little bit off the beaten path in Iceland  I highly recommend adding a visit to Brúarofss to your list!

How to reach Bruarfoss

All you have to do is drive to the  official parking lot   and start following the trail along the river. There’s room for a little over 25 cars so try to arrive a little earlier in the day. The hike from the parking lot to Brúarfoss is 3.5km one way and is mostly on flat terrain. It’s an easy hike that you can also enjoy if you’re traveling with younger children.

13. Haifoss

Haifoss is with its 122 meters  one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland  and it’s located close to the Hekla volcano, at the very edge of the Highlands.

How to reach Haifoss

To get there  you don’t have to drive on an official F-road  but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to be extremely careful if you’re not driving a 4×4. The gravel road leading up to the parking lot is very bumpy and your rental car is never insured against damage underneath the car. From the parking lot it’s only 5 minutes walking to reach one of the best viewpoints.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the number one attraction in iceland.

If you’re asking about the number one attraction, many would point to the mesmerizing Blue Lagoon. Just a short drive from Reykjavik, this geothermal spa is set in the heart of a lava field and offers visitors a chance to soak in its milky-blue waters, which are rich in minerals and believed to have healing properties.

What should you avoid in Iceland?

Ah, while Iceland is a dream destination for many, there are a few things to be mindful of. First off, avoid underestimating the ever-changing weather . Those sudden shifts can catch you off guard, especially if you’re out exploring the wilderness.

Speaking of which, always stick to marked paths and trails , as the delicate moss and unique landscapes can be easily damaged.

And while those geothermal areas look enticing, don’t be tempted to take a dip unless it’s a designated bathing spot; some can be scalding hot or have harmful chemicals.

Lastly, be cautious about driving in winter conditions , and always check road conditions and closures. Iceland’s beauty is unparalleled, but it’s essential to respect its nature and stay safe while soaking in its wonders.

What is the least visited part in Iceland?

Tucked away in the northwest corner of Iceland, the Westfjords are a maze of deep fjords, rugged cliffs, and remote villages.

The area’s isolation has helped preserve its untouched beauty and authentic Icelandic charm. With fewer tourists venturing this way, it’s a haven for those seeking solitude and a more intimate connection with nature.

From the dramatic landscapes of Látrabjarg cliffs, home to thousands of nesting seabirds, to the soothing waters of Krossneslaug geothermal pool with its ocean views, the Westfjords offer a serene and off-the-beaten-path Icelandic experience.

I recently completed the 10-Day Self-Drive Tour of the Complete Ring Road of Iceland with Top Attractions & Snaefellsnes, and it was an unforgettable adventure! From start to finish, the experience exceeded all my expectations. The itinerary was perfectly planned, allowing us to explore the most breathtaking landscapes and attractions Iceland has to offer. Highlights included the stunning waterfalls, geothermal areas, black sand beaches, and the mesmerizing glaciers. Each day brought new wonders and unique experiences. The self-drive aspect gave us the flexibility to explore at our own pace, which was a huge plus. The provided GPS and detailed guidebook were incredibly helpful, ensuring we never missed a must-see spot. The accommodations were comfortable and conveniently located, offering a cozy retreat after each day's adventures. The Snaefellsnes Peninsula was a true gem, and I'm so glad it was included in the tour. Its diverse scenery and lesser-known spots made for a perfect conclusion to our trip. Overall, this tour was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and discovery. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to experience the best of Iceland. Five stars all the way!

we absolutely loved this itinerary. It allows you to see the diversity of Iceland's landscape, flora and fauna. Iceland WAY exceeded our exprectations - particularly the northeast and northern coasts. . To make the trip easier, each night we mapped the GPS coordinates for all the points of interest for the next two days onto our iPad. This allowed us to see where our next hotel was in relation to the spots, allowing us to push back or move up some visits by a day. Most days involved 2-3 hours of driving not including the time at stops. We usually made it to our hotel by 5 or 6 each evening. Included breakfasts were all great. We chose to upgrade to the deluxe rooms and none disappointed. For two people, expect to spend $150+ on dinners. We went mid-May and the weather cooperated - only 2 days of rain and the temperatures were in the upper 50Fs / 10-15 C. It was a trip of a lifetime.

Overall trip was wonderful - quite happy with hotels booked and guidance that was provided. Played huge role in having wonderful vacation. However, guidance and road-map could be better as in two separate instances it was guided to visit last attraction of the day to be away from hotel and then to drive back for the stay. Either different hotel that is closer to last attraction of the day, or move last attraction as part of following day's agenda. This certainly caused unpleasant experiences on those 2 days. Other than that everything else was fine and we loved it.

A map of Greenland and Iceland that indicates cruising destinations on this CAU Study Tour.

Sail above the Arctic Circle around Greenland, the world’s largest island and perhaps its best-kept secret, stepping ashore in remote, sparsely inhabited villages and ports inaccessible to large cruise ships. Travel in the company of expert naturalist guides and Cornell Professor of Practice and Senior Faculty Fellow, Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability , John Tobin-de la Puente.

Sun hits an ice shelf in Greenland.

On this eight-night cruise aboard Exploris One, you'll board Zodiacs in the company of experts to cruise up close to glaciers, including the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as “the birthplace of icebergs” and a favorite breeding ground for migrating whales. Learn about the impact of climate change on Greenland's epic glaciers as you view them up close.

Greenland's winter clothing on display in a museum.

In a landscape dotted with vividly colorful, colonial-style houses and centuries-old Danish churches, meet local residents and experts to experience local Inuit traditions. Plus, immerse yourself in secluded whaling settlements such as Kitsissuarsuit and Qeqertaq.

Whales by the Icefjord in Illulissat Greenland.

CAU study tours are opportunities to learn from Cornell professors while immersing yourself in extraordinary travel. Alumni, family, and friends are welcome on this small ship excursion across the Arctic Circle.

The newly renovated Exploris One.

Equipped with a reinforced hull, Exploris One is the ideal ship for exploring glacial regions in a completely safe environment. Exploris One perfectly combines adventure and an exceptional level of comfort and a personalized service of excellence, including an onboard fitness area, wellness area, and two outdoor spas.

Greenland Houses on Island

The uniqueness of Greenland's geography, including low and high Arctic climates, fosters diverse and uncommon flora and fauna. Enjoy a Zodiac cruise to Disko Island’s unique Kuannit coastline and admire the fields of angelica and the breathtaking sculptures formed along huge volcanic basalt cliffs.

Plane flying at night

On Saturday, August 30th, depart for Reykjavík, Iceland, on an overnight flight.

Reykjavik, Iceland birds-eye view

After settling in, you may choose to spend the afternoon at leisure, or join a rejuvenating excursion to the Sky Lagoon, an oceanside thermal pool that offers views of a 700,000-year-old glacier. As a third option, participate in an island tour, including a visit to the National Museum of Iceland. This evening, join your fellow travelers for a private cocktail reception, followed by dinner at your leisure.

(Meals included: lunch, reception)

Fly from Iceland to Greenland, arriving in Kangerlussuaq, a tiny municipality at the end of a 110-mile-long fjord. It is here that you'll board Exploris One  and settle into your cabin before setting sail along the fjord and out to sea for the rest of the evening, heading south along Greenland's western coastline to the capital of Nuuk.

(Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner)

secret local tours iceland

Accessible only by sea or air, Nuuk is Greenland’s largest city, situated at the mouth of one of the world’s largest fjord systems known for its waterfalls, humpback whales, and icebergs. Notably, Paleo-Eskimo people settled here around 2200 B.C. Walk past waterfront homes with the nearly 4,000-foot-tall Sermitsiaq mountain as a dramatic backdrop. Visit the Greenland National Museum & Archives, whose collections chart 4,500 years of Greenland's history. An optional additional visit to the Nuuk Art Museum rounds out your day, before enjoying the captain’s welcome aboard reception and dinner, where you will meet the Exploris One crew.

Houses in Sisimiut, photo by Chmee2/Valtameri, licensed under CC 3.0

Cross the Arctic Circle this morning as you head toward Sisimiut, Greenland's second-largest town and a settlement for more than 4,000 years. Offering solitude and fjordside natural beauty, this tranquil town is home to the Sisimiut Museum, devoted to local Inuit history. Return to  Exploris One  for dinner and set forth for Kitsissuarsuit.

This morning, arrive off the coast of Kitsissuarsuit and transfer by Zodiac into town. First settled in 1830 by Dutch whalers, this small Inuit settlement of just 50 inhabitants remains self-sufficient thanks to its marine resources, and its tiny population has kept its age-old traditions alive. Explore the island on foot, enjoy some local entertainment, and sample some local delicacies. Return to Exploris One by Zodiac before setting sail toward the Eqi Glacier, one of nature’s great spectacles.

Up close at an iceberg

Today, you'll board Zodiacs alongside naturalist guides and embark on an up-close cruise to the Eqi Glacier, which stands more than 30 stories tall and more than three miles wide. This glacier, originating from the Greenland Ice Sheet, produces loud cracks that pierce through the silent air as huge chunks of ice "calve," or break off, into the bay, forming icebergs. Learn about how climatologists are monitoring Eqi and similar glaciers as Earth's temperature rises. At lunch, sail to Qeqertaq, a small settlement of 140 people known for halibut fishing and processing.

Ilulissat Icefjord views

From the deck this morning, view the Ilulissat Icefjord, known as “the birthplace of icebergs.” Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, Ilulissat Icefjord produces nearly 20 million tons of ice each day, all floating into Disko Bay. Step ashore in Ilulissat, Greenland's third-largest settlement, with a population of 4,900, for a guided walking tour, a visit to the Ilulissat City Museum, and free time to explore. At the Icefjord Centre, for example, learn even more about the climactic and cultural changes that have impacted Greenland's vast ice sheets.

An ice formation off the coast of Qeqertarsuaq, a town in Disko Island, Greenland.

Cruise along Disko Bay in Zodiacs this morning to view the Kuannit Coast, where huge volcanic cliffs and basalt rock columns offer refuge for numerous sea birds among inlets and coves. Disko Island's unique location between the low and high arctic climates fosters diverse flora uncommon for its latitude. In the afternoon, head to Qeqertarsuaq. With a backdrop of gleaming red basalt mountains and black-sand beaches, step ashore for a guided walk and meet a local expert to learn about Qeqertarsuaq’s history as well as some secrets of modern Arctic life.

Black-legged kittiwake and baby in a nest.

From Disko Island, head south once more to arrive at Evighed Fjord, which is aptly named “the fjord of Eternity,” as it stretches over 60 miles, seemingly endless in its beauty. The landscape transitions from glaciers to tundra, with rich flora and jagged, bird-filled cliffs. Step off a Zodiac cruise, then take a gentle hike amid the stunning glacial scenery and watch as birds such as white-tailed eagles and black-legged kittiwakes soar above. Later, return to Exploris One and gather for the captain’s festive farewell dinner this evening.

After disembarking this morning, transfer to the Kangerlussuaq airport for the charter flight back to Iceland to connect to homebound flights.

It is here that you'll board Exploris One and settle into your cabin before setting sail along the fjord and out to sea for the rest of the evening, heading south along Greenland's western coastline to the capital of Nuuk. (Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner)
