Arizona is gifted with two great historic and scenic train rides, the Verde Canyon Railroad (VCR) and the Grand Canyon Railway (GCR). The VCR runs most afternoons along the Verde River into Sycamore Canyon, while the GCR pulls you in style across a rolling plateau to the brink of one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Both railroads were saved from oblivion by rail lovers who believed in a renaissance of travel from Arizona’s frontier days, and we have much to thank them for.

Verde Canyon Railroad

The VCR train is stabled in quiet Clarkdale at the western edge of the Verde Valley, an easy two-hour drive north from Scottsdale. Starting at 1 p.m., this four-hour excursion cruises above the cottonwood-flanked Verde (green) River, to the turn-around site of old Perkinsville. Here the diesel 1953 locomotives switch position on a siding, giving you a close-up of the newly painted American Bald Eagles adorning their noses. During the spring, watch for bald eagles soaring over the canyon, or deer grazing by the river. The VCR is the more intimate ride, as the tracks run under sheer walls of sandstone and limestone almost close enough to touch.  What better way to laze away an afternoon than lolling about on the open-air vista cars, sipping a microbrew or margarita, soothed by the clickety-clack rhythm that harkens back to a simpler time?

In addition to the standard scenic ride, you can book seats for a variety of theme events: Wild Splendor with Sonora the bald eagle (monthly), Chocolate Lover's Special (February), Easter Bunny Express (April), Cinco de Mayo Celebration (May), Starlight Tours (monthly, May-September), Grape Train Escape / Ales On Rails (September-October), Fall Color (October-November) and Magical Christmas Journey (December). For real train junkies, the Locomotive Ride-Along is a bucket-list must. You’ll enjoy lunch at the Copper Spike Café, then take your seat in the cab of the lead locomotive next the engineer. After you get the train home safe and sound, you’ll receive a framed print of yourself with the crew as a souvenir. Now that’s a ride to remember! 

Grand Canyon Railway

If you have more time to play, head for the GCR depot in Williams, Arizona. The drive north from Scottsdale through Flagstaff takes about three hours, so you’ll need to get an early start to make the 9:30 a.m. train. After a scenic 64-mile journey highlighted by breathtaking views of San Francisco Peaks, cowboy storytellers and guitar-wielding musicians, the train arrives at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim at 11:45 a.m., disembarking just below the majestic El Tovar Hotel. You’ll have 3½ hours of free time to stroll the Rim Trail, enjoy lunch or a cocktail on the rim, watch condors riding the thermals, or even take a bus tour that will bring you right back to the Canyon’s vintage depot.

On the ride back to Williams, keep your eyes peeled for outlaws!  On my last ride (okay, on every ride), train robbers galloped alongside and forced us to stop. The scruffy bandits held us up with bad jokes and silly grins, but all they got was a few dollar bills from wide-eyed kids and chortling parents. A grand time was had by all!    

The GCR offers six classes of service, but their unique dome cars are the best choice for viewing. I recommend either the Observation Dome or Luxury Dome class, both of which include morning refreshments, afternoon snacks and a sparkling wine toast in the ticket price. To stretch your budget, opt for Pullman or Coach tickets. To stretch your legs, go for the added legroom and over-sized seats of a First-Class car.

Finally, if you’d like to stay overnight at the Canyon to savor a sunrise at Yavapai Point, a tradition with many visitors, GCR can assist with accommodations at the South Rim’s Maswik Lodge.

Powerful Iron Horses

The FP7 locomotives, two of only 10 remaining in North America, are the muscle that pulls the quarter-mile length of passenger cars. The classic iron horses, built in 1953 for the Alaska Railroad, debuted on Verde Canyon Railroad tracks on March 8, 1997. The meticulously-cared-for engines received a facelift in 2019 with an updated distinctive American bald eagle motif.

• Locomotive Ride-Along

Verde Canyon Railroad offers an exclusive opportunity for one person each day to experience a Locomotive Ride-along  with seating inside the cab of a powerful railroad engine .  It’s a rare chance to experience 1500 horses under the hood while riding a surge of enormous power. You’ll rub elbows with Verde Canyon Railroad’s engineer and conductor as they prepare the train for the run before having lunch at the Copper Spike Café. After the excursion, you will leave as a member of an elite guild with a photograph celebrating your day aboard an historic FP7 locomotive.

Riding in Comfort

All passenger cars are climate-controlled and each one has a restroom.  Comfortable seating, thoughtful décor and friendly, informative attendants add to the beauty of this remote wilderness without sacrificing the luxury of comfort. Each car has large panoramic windows and access to an open-air viewing car for 360-degree viewing and lots of fresh canyon air. The train also meets ADA requirements.

Throughout the trip, an insightful narration about the 4-hour, 40-mile roundtrip is paired with a great selection of classic railroad tunes selected to appeal to a wide range of musical tastes. Access to open-air viewing cars and narration are elite amenities which make our train experience unlike any other.

Seating Accommodations

Each car, whether the exclusively private Caboose or premium passenger cars, each has its own distinct decor, but all offer quality amenities, comfort and service.  There are panoramic windows for remarkable viewing and all cars connect to open-air viewing platforms. Each passenger has two seats for the price of one!

What You Need to Know Before Riding:

FAMILIES RIDING TOGETHER – Can different families, with individually online-booked reservations, be seated together? Yes. These reservations can be booked separately online, but the “link” option must be activated OR someone must call 800-293-7245 to confirm the combined seating request. A request made the day of travel will be considered but cannot be guaranteed.

ODD-NUMBERED RESERVATIONS – What happens if you have an odd-number of people in your party? There are tables that accommodate two individuals, while couch areas accommodate four (two per loveseat facing each other). Parties made up of odd numbers are encouraged to purchase four tickets to have a guaranteed private couch area or to be exclusively seated together. Otherwise, someone from another odd-numbered party may be seated next to, or across from, you.

Passenger Cars

With welcoming accommodations, travelers relax in living-room style seating on any of 11 passenger cars while soaking up the scenery streaming past during this 4-hour journey through large panoramic windows. Other amenities include a Champagne toast upon boarding, full-service cash-bars, purchasable snacks or premium liquors, all provided through service at one’s seat as well as a variety of individually-packaged, complimentary appetizers.

  **Please note that gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options are available for purchase at the Copper Spike Cafe` but the appetizers onboard the train contain meat, cheese and gluten.

The exclusive  caboose is designed for one private party of six or fewer adults. Its luxurious appointments include over-sized chairs, large picture windows, cupola seating for a birds-eye view, and two private outdoor viewing platforms. A personal valet pours your complimentary Champagne upon boarding and serves your freshly-prepared, individually-packaged, complimentary appetizers. Your choice of premium alcoholic beverages is available for purchase. Due to the historic nature of this car it is not ADA compliant.

The History Of The Verde Canyon Railroad

Financed by William Andrews Clark, the Verde Canyon Railroad is a 38-mile rail line built in 1912. Back then, it was used to transport passengers, copper, and supplies.

Dave Durbano bought the line from Clark in 1989 to keep it from being dismantled. He opened the Verde Canyon Railroad as a tourist attraction in 1990. Today, his vision continues with visitors worldwide enjoying this beautiful journey through Verde Valley.

Pivot Point Interpretive Plaza is an outdoor exhibit in Yuma that creatively takes visitors back in time to when the first railroad train entered Arizona, in 1877. Fun fact: Pivot Point refers to the concrete pivot on which the rail bridge was swung to let boats pass on the Colorado River. Here, a restored 1907 Baldwin steam locomotive sets the scene while interpretive panels detail Pivot Point and Yuma's history and the surround-sound audio experience cleverly helps you immerse yourself in that time. Close your eyes and experience the "ghost train," a modern sensory system that replicates sounds heard upon the arrival of a steam locomotive at the old Southern Pacific Hotel in 1877. You'll hear a steamboat plying the Colorado River, the whine of the swing-span rail bridge cranking open and the whistle of a train that's reached its destination. Have a kid who's train obsessed? Or perhaps you love locomotives yourself. Good news: These train experiences throughout Arizona are perfect for enthusiasts of all ages. Tucson Historic Depot : Here you'll find the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum, which showcases Southern Pacific #1673—choo choo-ing star of Oklahoma—all while cargo trains whoosh and rumble by. (It's still very much an active depot, serving as a stop for Amtrak passenger trains.) Learn about the rail line and the depot's important role in the Southwest's history, including a famous run-in with Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp. Admire trains both big and very small at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in Scottsdale. At the Scottsdale Railroad Museum, several engines include Arizona's "Merci Car"—one of 49 trains gifted to each state and Washington, D.C. as a thank you to Americans for their support throughout World War II. Don't miss the intricate, 10,000-square-foot model railroad building with miniature train scenes and exhibits that are designed for hands-on interaction. Part visitor center, part train depot, the Benson Visitor Center details the city's history as a stopping point for the Butterfield Overland Stage mail delivery route. Now Boarding at Platform 18

Still yearning for train travel without the, uh, travel? Those 21-and-up can book a trip (make reservations) for an evening of cocktails and intimate conversation at Platform 18 in Century Grand in Phoenix. Inspired by luxury train trips of the 1920s, Platform 18 is designed as a Presidential Pullman train car, complete with dark wood paneling, leather seats and windows that display the moving scenery "outside." The 90-minute "train ride" accommodates only 36 guests at a time, and features a menu of more than 45 cocktails influenced by classic Prohibition-era drinks and a story chronicling the history of their unseen host, a railroad tycoon and bootlegger.

Your Grand Canyon Tour starts off with a scenic ride from the Red Rocks of *Sedona, through Oak Creek Canyon (one of the top 10 scenic drives in America) and towering Ponderosa Pines of *Flagstaff. After meeting our Flagstaff guests, we head to the train depot in Williams, where your guide will check you in for your one-way railroad ride to Grand Canyon National Park.

Next we will board the historic, Grand Canyon Railway. You will have a  one-way train ticket   to enjoy the railroad to the Grand Canyon. You will be entertained by cowboys and enjoy the tunes of strolling musicians as the train travels back in time during the scenic 65-mile journey to the canyon. The train offers wonderful views of the San Francisco Peaks and rolls through valleys filled in wild flowers, dense pine forests, high desert plains and small canyons. The train arrives just steps from the Grand Canyon's South Rim, where you will step of the train to see your first views of this majestic canyon, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

We'll make a stop at the Historic Cameron Trading Post, originally built in 1916 and one of the finest places to shop for authentic Native American souvenirs. You may also visit The Gallery, home of many breathtaking pieces of fine and historic Native American Arts and Crafts.

Delve Into Arizona's Natural Beauty On Scenic Train Trips!

The deserts of Arizona may not seem a likely place to find high-class scenic train rides but surprisingly, two of the most popular can be found there, the Grand Canyon Railway and Verde Canyon Railway. 

In addition, the Sierra Madre Express pampers guests with an unforgettable experience, hearkening back to the "Silver Age" of rail travel when on-board meals were freshly-prepared, the scenery was spectacular, and a comfortable bed beckoned each night. 

It operates from Tucson through Mexico as a multi-day adventure which must be planned/booked far in advance.  The Verde Canyon Railway is nestled in central Arizona and has blossomed into a very popular, upscale attraction since its 1990 debut.

Finally, the Grand Canyon Railway operates in a class by itself, whisking passengers to the Grand Canyon's South Rim. 

Other entertainment venues include the Paradise & Pacific Railroad offering miniature train rides and the Old Pueblo Trolley hosting trolley trips in Tucson.  Also included within this guide are railroad museums.

State Rail History

Unlike in some states where a quaint, relatively forgotten operation holds the honor as the first railroad, Arizona's story is relatively straightforward.  Its involvement with the iron horse began with Southern Pacific's march eastward from the west coast. 

The so-called "Big Four" consortium (Collis P. Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, and Mark Hopkins) had recently completed the Transcontinental Railroad's western leg, known as the Central Pacific, and held a grand ceremony at Promontory Summit, Utah on May 10, 1869 to mark the occasion in conjunction with the Union Pacific. 

Afterwards, the group maneuvered to dominate California's intrastate trade and extend their railroad beyond its borders. 

To do this they formed the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1870, which broke away from the Bay Area and headed for Arizona.  Its ultimate destination was Texas and the Gulf Coast. 

By 1876 the SP had reached Los Angeles; it then turned east and opened to Fort Yuma, Arizona a year later (May, 1877). 

According to an in-depth analysis  Trains Magazine  published in its January, 2007 issue entitled, " Great Railroading: State-By-State ," rails arrived in the city of Tucson in 1880.  As work progressed at a lightning-fast pace, the SP was extended to El Paso, Texas by 1881.

In the succeeding years, several other railroads entered Arizona, notably the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe.  The AT&SF was SP's primary rival in the Grand Canyon State and throughout the Southwest. 

According to Keith Bryant, Jr.'s excellent book, " History Of The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway ," it arrived shortly after the SP as the company's leader, William Barstow Strong, sought his own Pacific coast connection. 

Instead of battling with Huntington for access into California, he opted for a southwesterly routing through New Mexico and southeastern Arizona, which ultimately terminated at Guaymas, Mexico along the Gulf of California. 

This western port was designed to capture the "China trade" and all business originating to and from the South Pacific, Latin American, New Zealand, and Australian regions.  In addition, this corridor was actually several hundred miles shorter from New York City than SP's San Francisco line. 

The project was a three part endeavor: first, the Sonora Railway was chartered in 1880 to build from Guaymas to the U.S. border at Nogales, Mexico; second, trackage rights over the SP were secured between AT&SF's end-of-track at Deming, New Mexico and Benson, Arizona; and finally, the AT&SF built a 90-mile connector from Benson to Nogales. 

The latter was constructed as the New Mexico & Arizona Railroad and undertaken throughout the summer of 1882 with crews completing the extension on October 25th that year. 

Unfortunately, Santa Fe's Mexican route never materialized as expected and the company would later open its own line into California (eventually serving all of the state's major cities).  At its peak, Arizona was home to some 76 different railroads, many small short lines. 

According to the book, " The Routledge Historical Atlas Of The American Railroads " by author John F. Stover, the state's network reached its zenith in 1920 when 2,478 miles were in service.  Over the years this number has steadily dropped as other modes of transportation, notably trucks and automobiles, led to abandonments. 

The Association of American Railroads notes Arizona currently has 1,780 active miles, operated by 11 different railroads. 

• Arizona Railway Museum

This museum is located in Chandler, somewhat southeast of Phoenix.  The organization was launched in 1983 and its collection generally focuses on preserving Arizona's railroad history, as well as that of the entire Southwest.

Their more notable pieces include:

• Homestake Mining 0-4-0CA #5 (manufactured by H.K. Porter in December/1905)
• Southern Pacific 2-8-0 #2562 (listed by the railroad as a Class C-9 "Consolidation" it was out-shopped by the Burnham, Williams & Company [Baldwin Locomotive Works] in 1906)
• Chicago & North Western E8A #5022-B (built by Electro-Motive in July/1950)
• Magma Arizona Railroad DRS-6-6-1500 #10 (originally built by Baldwin for the McCloud Railway as its #29 in July/1950).

Due to the region's extreme summer heat the museum is closed from late May through early September.  Admission is free!

• Grand Canyon Railway

One of the most popular train rides in the country is the Grand Canyon Railway, offering upscale trips through the beautiful Arizona desert.  You depart from Williams and 64 miles later arrive at the world-renowned Grand Canyon National Park over trackage (originally owned by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe). 

At the South Rim you can stay at the historic El Tovar Hotel (among other accommodations) or simply enjoy the incredible views.  During the trip there are many level of services provided, from standard coach to dome-cars. 

There are also several vacation packages to choose from.  The popularity of the Grand Canyon has certainly increased since its inception in 1988, and today, the railroad's diesel and steam locomotives pull a well-maintained fleet of restored passenger equipment for unparalleled enjoyment and spectacular views. 

• Old Pueblo Trolley

The Old Pueblo Trolley opened on April 17, 1993 to preserve Tucson's transit history.  The city's first electrified streetcars entered service on June 1, 1906 to replace what had been horse and mule-powered operations (typical in many towns and cities of that time period). 

Unfortunately, the classic trolley proved very susceptible to other modes of competition, including standard steam railroads.  Early automobiles, notably Ford's Model T, put many out of business by the 1920's while the Great Depression finished off the industry. 

The Tucson operation was no different and the last cars ran on December 31, 1930.  The idea for the Old Pueblo Trolley first began in 1988 and its equipment is currently housed at the 36th Street Shops.

The group's 1-mile of track begins at University Boulevard, heads south beneath Union Pacific's main line, and then loops around Congress Street/Broadway Boulevard.  The organization also operates buses and manages the nearby Southern Arizona Transportation Museum. 

• Paradise & Pacific Railroad/McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

The Paradise & Pacific Railroad, located in Scottsdale, is part of the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. The train is based from a Colorado narrow gauge and is exactly 5/12th's the original, carrying passengers on a 1-mile trip around the park. 

They also feature a small museum which includes an impressive of collection of preserved wooden depots: one of Santa Fe vintage constructed in 1907 and that once sat at Aguila, North Scottsdale Avenue; a Southern Pacific structure built during the 1930's at Maricopa, North Scottsdale Avenue; and finally another Santa Fe station originally located at Peoria, North Scottsdale Avenue, completed in 1895. 

A fourth depot replicates an Arizona & New Mexico Railroad building that once stood in Clifton, Arizona.  While there don't forget to see 2-6-0 #6, built for the El Paso & Southwestern by the Burnham, Williams Company (Baldwin) in 1907 and Pullman car "Roald Amundsen," which saw use by every U.S. president from Herbert Hoover through Dwight Eisenhower.

• Gadsden-Pacific Division Toy Train Operating Museum

This organization is based in Tucson and features a caboose on the property and an indoor pavilion, which houses a large operating model train layout. 

The caboose is of Denver & Rio Grande Western lineage; given #01433 it was manufactured by the company's shop forces at the Burnham Rail Yard in Denver, Colorado between June/July, 1944.  It remained in active service until 1986. 

After spending many years awaiting an uncertain fate, it was privately purchased by a hobby shop owner in Arizona City and restored (even the blanked-out windows were replaced).  In 2005, Gadsden-Pacific acquired the car where it remains on display today. 

In addition to their indoor layout the group also has an outdoor garden railroad and large-scale trains. They are closed during July and August due to the extreme heat but otherwise remain open every second and fourth Sunday the rest of the year. Admission is free.

• Maricopa Live Steamers

Large-scale, outdoor railroads have become an increasingly popular alternative to the more expensive, standard excursion rides.  Some groups do not even charge admission!  This organization, based in Glendale (Phoenix), offers just such an attraction. 

What is known as the Adobe Western Railroad hosts 30-40 minute trips on the property which includes a rather substantial network of track.  Their public rides are offered every Sunday between 12 and 4:30 p.m. from mid-September through mid-May (again, due to summer's extreme heat they are closed outside of these dates).   

In addition to their collection of steam locomotives the group also has a fleet of diesels to pull their trains.  While rides are free the organization does eagerly welcome donations.  To learn more and plan a visit their website for more information.

Sierra Madre Express (Discontinued, 2009)

What was one of the most unique rail travel experiences anywhere, the Sierra Madre Express  (hosted by North American Rail Adventures) took you back to the days of yore during railroading's "Silver Age" of streamliners.

During these trips one could enjoy freshly-prepared meals, and high-class accommodations.  The private rail tour operated between Tucson, across the Mexican border, passed through the country's breathtaking Copper Canyon, and operated as far as Creel/Divisadero.  

It was discontinued in 2009.  Today, you can still experience the Copper Canyon by rail on the  Chepe Express , which runs via Chihuahua.

• Southern Arizona Transportation Museum

The Southern Arizona Transportation Museum is housed in the restored Southern Pacific/El Paso & Southwestern depot in Tucson ( At its peak the EP&SW reached over 1,200 miles in length.  It was acquired by Southern Pacific in 1924 ).

Located at 414 North Toole Avenue, the brick/adobe structure was built in 1907 and also acts a stop for Amtrak on Union Pacific's main line. While there be sure to visit their preserved steam locomotive, Southern Pacific 2-6-0 #1673. 

The little Mogul (listed as Class M-4b) was built by the Schenectady Locomotive Works (forerunner to the modern American Locomotive Company of Schenectady, New York) in 1900 and is housed beneath a large outdoor pavilion. 

Inside there are various interactive historical exhibits, not all of which relate to railroad history.  Admission is free although hours vary.  To learn more please visit their website.

Superstition Scenic Narrow Gauge Railroad 

The Superstition Scenic Narrow Gauge Railroad is an often forgotten attraction, located in the rebuilt gold mining town of Goldfield, situated about 40 miles east of downtown Phoenix. 

This historical interpretive center, which opened in 1989 and known as the "Goldfield Ghost Town," tells the story of a small mining community that once produced more than $1.5 million in gold from small, local shafts during the 1890's. 

After just a few years the "rush" was over and the town closed before 1900. 

The Superstition Scenic operates roughly 1.5 miles of track as a 3-foot, narrow-gauge around the grounds with cars pulled by a diesel switcher manufactured by the Plymouth Locomotive Works (but dressed to appear as a steam locomotive).

• Verde Canyon Railway

The scenic train rides available in Arizona today are thanks in large part to the Santa Fe Railroad. The Verde Canyon Railroad is no exception as it uses former AT&SF trackage in central Arizona, near the very popular tourist destination of Sedona.

The Verde Canyon has become a popular tourist attraction since it began operations in the early 1990s. Today, the railroad offers several different excursions and special trips. 

Although prices average a little higher than what you might find on other tourist railroads the scenery afforded within climate-controlled coaches is well worth the cost! 

If you are visiting Sedona, or Arizona in general a visit to the Verde Canyon Railroad, is very much recommended. This is especially true since you can often witness Bald Eagles on the journey and it is the only way to see Arizona's breathtaking Verde Canyon.

These Scenic Train Rides in Arizona Will Blow Your Mind

Arizona is where my family fell in love with trains, or rather, where I finally got what all the excitement was about.

I’d never thought about the wonders of locomotion before toddlers filled my living room with wooden train tracks, and the grandparents ended up as excited about cabooses and switching tracks as the kids were.

While planning a family trip, we were looking for activities that were accessible, comfortable, and entertaining for all of us. Normally, we choose museums, hikes, and mountain adventures, but with our new passion for trains, we decided to climb aboard the state’s two famous, scenic train rides.

Both were one-of-a-kind journeys that were worth the cost and showed us new pockets of the state we hadn’t seen before. The kids loved it. The grandparents loved it. And I had two outings where I got to look out the window and feel what life must have been like a hundred years ago (with a cocktail in hand). Yup. Trains are magic.

Verde Canyon Railroad – Clarkdale, Arizona

40 minutes outside of Sedona, the  Verde Canyon Railroad offers an exclusive eyeful of Arizona with a four-hour, 20-mile ride. This delightful train winds along the Verde River and into the canyon. The Verde Canyon is only accessible by foot and rail, so this ride is a special look at an untouched riparian habitat in any season.

The train often hugs the mountainside and goes over fortified bridges, making for spectacular views of red rock and cottonwood. The route includes a scoot through a tunnel carved straight through solid rock that hugs the train and track perfectly. It’s super dark, thrilling, and a moment of walking (well, chugging) back in time.

Each passenger car has air conditioning, but the real gems are the open-air cars where you can feel the breeze and have unobstructed views. On our ride, most folks lingered in these areas. There was also a wide array of snacks and drinks available for sale.

Overall, it was a great day out for the family and is perfect for anyone wanting some stunning views of the state.

The Grand Canyon Railway – Williams, Arizona

The Grand Canyon Railway is an all-day affair that manages to pack in a shootout, live music, the Grand Canyon, and a train robbery. It’s certainly one of the most unique ways to experience a National Park.

I usually recommend spending at least two days at  Grand Canyon National Park , but this train ride made a day’s outing to the park very manageable with young kids. A fantastic option if you only have one day in the area, or part of your crew loves nature, but would rather not sweat. Plus, you don’t have to think at all about where to park.

The train departs from Williams, AZ, a small town right on Route 66, thirty miles outside of Flagstaff. The train then takes a two-hour ride out to the South Rim of the park, where you are dropped off at the  Historic Village . You’ll have three hours to explore the park, and then another couple of hours on the ride home. In that 3 hours, try a portion of the  Rim Trail , which also passes several shuttle stops if you don’t want to walk back.

Part of the fun of train travel is choosing your car. The railway offers 6 different cars including a budget 1920’s Pullman car, a 1950’s coach, observation domes, and luxury parlors. It’s fun to choose a different car for each leg of the journey, though children under 16 are not allowed in the luxury cars.

Snacks and cocktails are available for purchase. I can’t explain why it’s so much fun to eat on a train, but we were all giddy with our snacks. My kids also loved the open windows in the Pullman car, even though, in my humble opinion, the AC in first class was much more comfortable.

The train takes you through Kaibab National Forest, but I would say this train is more for access and ease to the park than it is for wild scenery. You’ll be passing through a lot of flat scrub, bush, and pine with very little elevation change, but know that the destination will more than make up for it.

Why Arizona Train Journeys Are Totally Worth It

These two scenic train offerings gave us a new way to encounter the Arizona landscape. The mix of novelty, history, and convenience makes them both wonderful options to explore these gorgeous canyons.

They’re also a great way to bring our family together, allowing everyone from different generations and abilities to see America’s stunning and beautiful Southwest.

When the locomotive first began its entrance into the West, it served as a sign of technological and settler progression into seemingly unknown territories but it also signaled a rapidly changing world for the Indigenous peoples. In fact, even the settlers who benefited from the train’s trail of progress seemed ambivalent to fully adapting to the technology and that attitude has continued into more modern times.

Copper Spike Train

Round trip or one way “Copper Spike” Train Excursions depart from a 2 story 1916 restored depot located on Globe,Arizona’s historic Broad Street. Your forty-five minute ride through the “Land of the Apache” terminates at the Apache Gold Casino Resort. The Copper Spike Train Excursion operates full-length dome cars built in 1954 for the Santa Fe Railway that were used on luxury long-distance trains. They feature seating for 66 passengers on the upper level, with a 22-seat dining area on the lower level. These cars are air-conditioned and restroom-equipped.Polar Express and New Year’s Eve excursions run during December. Locomotive Park is home for AT&SF “Mountain Type” 4-8-4 steam engine #3759. Visitors are allowed to climb aboard the AT&SF 3759. The locomotive is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the highlights of Amtrak's Sunset Limited is the constantly changing and shifting scenery from one state to another from the bayous and the gulf coast of Louisiana, through the plains of Texas, passing the juniper and pinon-covered sandy hills of New Mexico, and on through the deep red, mountainous desert of Arizona.

There is no question that Arizona is one of the journey's highlights. While on board, passengers will be able to enjoy the views from their seats, as well as the unmissable viewing car which has floor to window ceilings.

With a drink in hand, travelers can make their way to the viewing car and sit back and soak in the craggy mountains and sprawling red desert that is picturesque enough to be a painting. There is no better way to arrive in the cool city of Tuscon for lunch and a full day of Saguaro desert exploring.

Hopping on board the Sunset Limited in Arizona is a great way to travel through the state and see the majestic desert landscapes. For travelers flying into Phoenix, a great option is, — after exploring the great capital of Arizona — to take the Sunset Limited from Maricopa, Arizona, down to Tucson, to explore the Saguaro National Park and, from there, continue to Benson.

How much does the sunset limited cost, taking the sunset limited will cost $42 one-way for a coach seat.

The Sunset Limited leaves from New Orleans and Los Angeles three times per week. From New Orleans, the train leaves every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 9: 00 a.m and leaves Los Angeles every Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 10:00 pm.

The whole one-way trip costs around $142 at a base price and will change based on the time of year of the trip and the preferred tier of accommodation. Taking the Sunset Limited from Yuma, Arizona, across the state to Benson, Arizona will cost $42 one-way for a coach seat.

Amtrak offers different levels of comfort on the Sunset Limited, from standard coach seats to private family suits, with roomettes and private bedrooms in between. For those only traveling within Arizona, a coach seat should do the trick. With this ticket, passengers will have access to the viewing car, and the café. However, it's always wise to pack extra drinks and snacks.

It's important to plan the trip according to the day the Sunset Limited will be passing through Maricopa. If headed eastward to Tucson and Benson, the train will be leaving from Maricopa on Thursday, Friday and Sundays in the morning.

Scenic, But Underrated: This Small Town In Arizona Is A Great Alternative To Tucson

A vacation to Arizona is already one worth adding to the bucket list. However, riding Amtrak's Sunset Limited through the heart of it, will take the vacation to the next level. Of course, taking a road trip through the scenic southwest is a classic experience. But, having the opportunity to sit back and soak in every bit of scenery will reveal magic otherwise missed.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Williams Amtrak Station, where the Polar Express awaited. The anticipation was palpable as we boarded the beautifully decorated train, complete with plush seats, warm lighting, and a festive soundtrack.

As the train pulled out of the station, the conductor, dressed in his iconic uniform, greeted us with a warm smile and a friendly announcement. The journey was filled with delightful surprises. We were treated to hot chocolate and cookies, just like in the book, and Santa himself made a special appearance to distribute bells to all the children.

The Magic of the North Pole

The highlight of the trip was the arrival at the North Pole. Stepping off the train, we were greeted by a winter wonderland, complete with snow-covered trees and a bustling North Pole village. We had the opportunity to meet Santa Claus and his elves, take photos with them, and even visit the North Pole post office to send a letter to Santa.

Beyond the Polar Express

Our trip to Williams wasn’t just about the Polar Express. We also had the opportunity to explore the breathtaking Grand Canyon, a natural wonder that left us in awe. We took a scenic hike along the rim, enjoyed a delicious meal at a local restaurant, and even took a helicopter tour for a truly unforgettable perspective of the canyon.

Another highlight of our trip was visiting the High Country Alpaca Farm. We learned about alpacas, their unique fleece, and had the opportunity to interact with these gentle creatures. The farm offered a serene and educational experience for the whole family.

Our trip to Williams, Arizona, was a truly magical experience. The Polar Express Train Ride was a highlight, but the entire journey was filled with adventure, wonder, and family memories that will last a lifetime. Under five hours, this journey is surely one the world’s finest and most scenic one-day train rides. Commence the TranzAlpine experience in Christchurch, before speeding along the Canterbury Plains and climbing quickly through the snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps, then descend through a thrilling tunnel to emerge among the lakes, streams and rainforests of the South Island ’s West Coast. 

6. The Bergensbanen, Norway

This astonishing train is one of Europe’s best railway rides  – and one of the least well known outside of Norway . It covers the spectrum of the Nordic country’s natural splendor: climbing canyons, crossing rivers, burrowing through mountainsides and traversing barren icescapes.

7. Tazara Railway, Tanzania and Zambia

Few trains in the world offer the chance – and we should point out that it’s a chance rather than a guarantee – of spotting big game from your seat. The Tazara ( Tanzania and Zambia Railway Authority) does just that. The highlight, though, is the chance to spend two days watching everyday life out of the window, and enjoying the clamor and chaos when the train pulls to a halt – scheduled or unscheduled.

8. The Sunset Limited, USA 

Start:   New Orleans End: Los Angeles Departs: Three times per week  Distance: 1995 miles (3211km)  Duration:  Two days

The ultimate American railroad ride: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of crossing the States, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer. Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston, across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, partner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.

9. The Caledonian Sleeper, UK

Segueing from the sooty suburbs and crowded concrete-lined cul-de-sacs of central London to the crisp air and soaring vistas of the Scottish Highlands via one overnight train journey epitomizes the romance of rail travel. Enjoy the buffet-car banter, be lulled to sleep by the rhythm of the rails, then wake up to bedside views of towering granite peaks. 

10. Mombasa to Nairobi, Kenya

The Nairobi–Mombasa railway route is among Africa’s most legendary: it even helped foster the modern concept of safari. The rickety old railway has undergone a rebuild in recent years with smart new stations and a new track laid across the Kenyan savannah . What hasn’t changed is the spellbinding journey, with trains departing from Mombasa and passing in the shadow of Kilimanjaro to the cusp of the Great Rift Valley.

11. Tangier to Marrakesh, Morocco

Nothing can fully prepare you for the magnificence Morocco ’s most evocative city – from the clamor and spectacle of the central square, Djemaa El Fna , to the primary colors of the Jardin Majorelle ; and from the peaceful madrassa of Medersa Ben Youssef to the mad profusion of alleyways. There’s no doubting that a railway journey down the spine of this North African nation is a profoundly uplifting experience.

12. The Rocky Mountaineer, Canada

Clattering across the wild Rocky Mountains along a pioneering 19th-century railroad, this train journey is all at once a geological field trip, sightseeing adventure and wildlife safari. It promises cinematic views of Canada ’s quintessential mountain landscapes, plus a bevy of engineering marvels, from dizzying bridges to logic-defying tunnels. And with luck, you might even spy a bald eagle, moose or grizzly bear. 

13. Alexandria to Aswan, Egypt

A ride from Alexandria to Aswan means you will travel the length of Egypt 's rail network – and also undertake an odyssey in the company of the great Nile River , with chances to disembark and explore the relics of empires along its banks . Do keep in mind that, for all their plus points, Egyptian trains are not always known for punctuality. 

14. The Serra Verde Express, Brazil

Start:   Curitiba End:  Morretes,  Paraná Departs: Daily Distance:  42 miles (68km) Duration:  3hrs 30mins

One of Brazil ’s most spectacular train journeys, the Serra Verde Express starts in the architecturally bold city of Curitiba and winds its way through dramatic mountain passes covered with tropical rainforest before it drops you in Morretes in the lush state of Paraná. The half-day trip takes in canyons, jagged mountain peaks and verdant lowlands, and the slow-going locomotive allows plenty of opportunities to photograph the cinematic backdrop while traversing some 30 bridges and chugging through 14 tunnels. Aside from the captivating scenery, the journey provides a fascinating glimpse into the past as it trundles through tiny stations dating back to the late 1800s.

15. The Darjeeling Toy Train, India

India ’s narrow-gauge steam railways are the stuff of legend, and the bottle-blue Darjeeling Toy Train is the nation’s lead engine. The ride from the Bengal plains to Darjeeling travels past emerald-green tea plantations and precariously balanced, tin-roofed townships, while clouds tumble down the looming massif of Mt Khangchendzonga. Steam engines are now only used for a small section of the route, yet this iconic mountain journey still serves up a sizable slice of history.

16. The Hokkaidō Shinkansen, Japan

The Hokkaidō Shinkansen , one of Japan’s iconic bullet trains , takes you from Tokyo to Hakodate, the southern port of Hokkaidō . Along the way, it zooms past picturesque scenes of rural Japan , through mountains and under the sea. The route is only part of it, though: riding the shinkansen – with its food trolleys and staff who bow upon entering and exiting the train car – is a classic Japanese experience.

17. Colombo to Badulla, Sri Lanka

One of many unforgettable things about Sri Lanka is the variety and intensity of the color green throughout the year . And for train aficionados, there is no better way to appreciate the country’s full, verdant spectrum than an all-day rail journey from Colombo’s urban gardens at sea level to tea plantations in the Hill Country , via brain-spinning sensory doses of jungle and forest, paddy field and palm tree, mountain and valley, national parks…and human habitation, too. Expect to move slowly – and enjoy one of the most scenic train trips in the world.

18. Bangkok to Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore

A railway journey from Bangkok to Singapore spans three countries, three capital cities, and – without disembarking once – can be completed in under three days. But to go so fast would be to miss the point of this artery along the Malay Peninsula – a line suited to capricious roaming. You always have the option to hop off – to see tropical islands, to scale the cool heights of tea plantations, and to linger in a trio of metropolises that are each entirely different.

19. The Glacier Express, Switzerland

Switzerland is a nation of rail fanatics . And if the Swiss could pick one definitive ride, the honor would surely go to the Glacier Express . This eight-hour journey from ritzy St Moritz to Matterhorn-topped Zermatt unzips the lovely Alpine terrain in the country’s south, corkscrewing up to wind-battered mountain passes, teetering across 291 bridges and rumbling through 91 tunnels. It intentionally moves at a snail’s pace so you take in those out-of-this-world views of meadows, forest, falls and mountains – all through panoramic windows. 

20. The Bernina Express, Switzerland & Italy

Start:   Chur End:  Tirano Departs: Daily Distance:  96 miles (156km) Duration:  4hrs 30mins

We can wax lyrical about the glacier-capped mountains, waterfall-draped ravines, jewel-colored lakes and endless spruce forests glimpsed through panoramic windows on Switzerland’s Bernina Express – but seeing is believing. Rolling from Chur in Graubünden to Tirano in northern Italy , this narrow-gauge train often tops polls of the world’s most beautiful rail journeys. The line has even made UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites – and with good reason.

21. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, England, France, Switzerland and Italy

Start:  London End:  Venice Departs: One to six times per month Distance:  1300 miles (2090km) Duration:  Two days

The promise of traveling from London to Venice cocooned in luxury while sitting in twinkly dining cars with fine china and silver cutlery is surely one that endures in the hearts of all rail enthusiasts. While the Orient Express’ various other 20th-century routes are sadly long gone, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express offers a tantalizing sample of the original on a trip that is surely the best journey back in time ever. But this route gained a new rival in 2023 with the Orient Express La Dolce Vita service  – and, in 2025, a new service on the original route is scheduled to hit the rails .

22. Nova Gorica to Jesenice, Slovenia

Start:  Nova Gorica End:   Jesenice Departs:  Daily Distance:  55 miles (89km) Duration:  Two hours

Here is a near-perfect railway adventure that most people have never heard of. The Bohinj Railway connects two places whose significance can be lost to modern travelers. An unassuming regional train rattling out of a faded-grandeur halt on the Italy– Slovenia border doesn’t even hint at what’s to come. The journey is a spectacular tour of Slovenia’s upland highlights from Nova Gorica, climbing through mountain towns and villages along the Soča River , passing through superb Alpine scenery close to Lake Bohinj , and on past world-famous Lake Bled to Jesenice.

23. The Ghan, Australia

Start:   Adelaide End:  Darwin Departs: Twice a week Distance:   1851 miles (2979km) Duration:  54 hours

Cutting vertically across the Outback heart of Australia , straight through the desolate deserts of the Red Centre, the Ghan is one of the southern hemisphere’s most unforgettable train journeys. This cross-country train service has provided a vital link between Australia’s north and south coasts, traveling north across the country from well-to-do, orderly Adelaide to the tropical, croc-filled creeks of Darwin. Luxurious and legendary, it’s Australia’s elegant version of the Orient Express.

24. Cannes to Menton, France

Start:   Cannes End:  Menton Departs: Daily Distance:  34 miles (55km) Duration:  1hr 20mins

It’s the stuff that travel dreams are made of: a slow train skirting the French Mediterranean coast, through towns whose very names resonate with glamour – Cannes, Antibes , Monaco . On one side of the tracks lies that sparkling sea; on the other, dramatic cliffs interspersed with the gorgeous coastal towns of the French Riviera . You can make a long day of this short trip, hopping on and off to explore a street market, linger at an outdoor terrace, take a breath of history and get a taste of luxury.
