Originally from North Wales, Sasha is a DJ who burst onto the scene in the late 1980s. He has worked Madonna, Hot Chip and the Chemical Brothers, and he earned himself a Grammy nomination in 2004 for his remix of Felix da Housecat’s “Watching Cars”.

Hailing from Bangor, Wales, born, Alexander Paul Coe on September 4th 1969, is DJ Sasha. He stumbled across electronic dance music at an establishment called The Haçienda in Manchester. He naturally gravitated to the sound of acid house, with it’s raw sound. He would make regular trips to Manchester, and eventually moved to Disley just outside of the city. It was around this era that he began to teach himself how to mix. It was a gradual rise to success for Sasha, as he struggled financially, whilst trying to maintain his career performing at low paid gigs. Fortunately, he landed a residency at the Hacienda, but decided to move on to a club named Shelly’s Laserdome in Stoke-on-Trent. His music was growing, in popularity and musically, drawing influences from Italian piano and acid house. Through his efforts, he landed a recording contract.

Moving on, in 1993 he crossed paths with John Digweed another DJ on the circuit. Together they released “Renaissance – The Mix Collection”. The single “Be as One” which he produced with Maria Nayler on vocals, peaked at 17 in the UK Singles Chart. Sasha eventually came to the attention of Ministry of Sound, who released the album “Northern Exposure 2”, this earned the Sasha and Digweed an international tour, which notably cemented and crafted the sound of trance. They earned themselves a residency at Twilo nightclub in New York City. It was around this time that Sasha produced remixes of Madonna’s “Ray of Light”, and also went on to score the PlayStation games Wipeout 3 and Gran Turismo. This was now the age of “superstar DJs”.

Following further international tours, and a successful album, the 2000s saw Sasha part ways with Digweed, and continue working on his own success. He released his sophomore album of original material, entitled “Airdrawndagger” in August 2002. It was pursuing another style of music, a less heavy and more ambient project. “Involver” was his following project, released in 2004, which was debated amongst the Grammy committee as to whether it was up for an award; unfortunately it didn’t receive a nomination.

Sasha’s career took all sorts of twists and turns, especially with his September 8th 2008 release, “Invol2ver”, which was more of a progressive house record. He is always voted into the top 10 DJs in the world in the DJMag each year, achieving the top spot in 2000.

Live reviews

Alexander Paul Coe, aka Sasha, is Wales’ contribution to the Electronic Dance Music scene, and damn is it a good one. Grammy nominated for remixing Felix da Housecat’s “Watching Cars Go By”, he has remixed tons of artists, from Madonna and The Chemical Brothers. Like most established EDM artists, his live sets are nothing short of epic. An inclusive light show that is perfectly synched with every track that flawlessly transitions into the next. He does a great job of building anticipation for the beat to drop by a continual tone progression that just repeats and repeats, and slowly builds upon this one tone repetition. This all leads to the fast-paced first track that erupts the huge crowd into dance. He doesn’t speak much, but really doesn’t need to. His sets are centered on his tracks, and they are more than capable of speaking for themselves. He includes the remixes he has done, in addition to his original songs. An hour long set usually results in the best dance time you have in a long time, and you leave completely knackered but with absolutely no regrets about it. There is even a point where the entire crowd is so deeply entranced by the music that everything outside of the tent disappears.

Legends within the house scene don’t come often but Sasha is definitely one. Coming from as far back as the illegal raves in the hacienda day in Manchester’s derelict warehouses – to now, still going and still pleasing a new and even younger crowd to what he is used to due to house music finally breaking the walls down and falling into mainstream music.

With the elongated intro to get the crowd pumped and enough strobe lighting to make 4 Star Trek films, it’s clear who wrote the book on how to do today’s EDM/ house music. Best of all is, Sasha doesn’t “Drop the Bass” or anything of the ridiculous kind. Instead, he moulds his live intros into the next song and then mixes the rest of the music together – how it should be done of course. There aren’t any ridiculous noises that are considered cool, and there are some sampled vocals over the top of some of his shimmering beats.

A gig in which he celebrated the 20th year release of his essential mix showed that the guy has still got it and he isn’t afraid to flaunt it.

If you’re looking for a night of nostalgia, and to gain the feeling that you belong in the hacienda days, then a night at a Sasha gig is definitely for you.

Sasha was beautiful at 99 Scott I couldn't get enough I want to see him again!! There's more to it than just beauty the sensation of love lye's underneath my heart letting all the women know they should loved.

The day I was born!

My absolute favorite artist. Night and day experience. Saw him in April 2017, show was put on by the same production company and LOVED everything about it. Smaller crowd, Very intimate, ample space to dance, great show. Last night... extremely crowded, venue had no ventilation, 1700 people? How many at April’s event? I would rather pay a higher priced ticket and enjoy the show.

El dj excelente, sin duda uno de los mejores, toda la noche buenísima música. Empezó a tocar aprox a las 23 hrs, salimos como a las 4 hrs del día siguiente y la música continuaba súper, la gente seguía llegando. El lugar y la ubicación también me parecieron excelentes.

He cancelled all his shows this weekend due to "illness"....first Coachella, now this? Alexander is losing his edge, which is very disappointing. Maybe he needs to take a long break and get his life in order.

DJ superstars Sasha and John Digweed are setting out in late March on a two-month jaunt across North America, dubbed the Delta Heavy Spring 2002 Tour. The famed mixing duo will be transporting its own sound system, custom-designed visuals, and interactive lighting to create the right atmosphere at each of the tour’s performances. The tour crew will set up each venue accordingly, transforming traditional concert venues into more ideal settings for dance/DJ productions. “It’s a new challenge to bring the creativity of electronic music to a multitude of diverse venues,” tour producer Kevin Lyman of Immortal Touring and Events said in a statement. “Since we did our first tour in ’96, we’ve watched the American scene grow, and hopefully we’ve grown with it,” Sasha and Digweed elaborated. “The Delta Heavy tour gives us an opportunity to play in cities we’ve never played in before and bring something special to each and every event.” New York DJ Jimmy Van M will open each show with a DJ set and serve as master of ceremonies. The visual aspects of the performances have been created by design firm Imaginary Forces (who created the opening sequence of the film “Seven”), and will utilize “tribal” and “lost civilization” themes with characters based on Sasha, Digweed, and Van M. Sasha and Digweed’s “Communicate” (Kinetic) debuted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart in July 2000, peaking at No. 149 on The Billboard 200 the same week. Digweed’s “Los Angeles” album (Studio K7) — part of the “Global Underground” DJ mix series — hit No. 11 on the Top Independent Albums chart in March of last year.
