A fast finish in Willunga on stage 4 of the Tour Down Under - Live coverage

The famous hill is gone but a test for the puncheurs and sprinters awaits

The profile of stage 4 of the 2023 Tour Down Under

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of stage 4 of the Tour Down Under in Willunga. The famous hill might not feature today but the riders still have an uphill finish to contend with.

Stage 4 of the Santos Tour Down Under is a go! The riders are just leaving the neutral zone in Port Willunga.

It's the first time ever the TDU has started in Port Willunga. Just a short neutral zone today, since the race proper has just set off. The peloton have 133.2km ahead.

On paper, it's a flat stage today. But the wind is going to play a huge factor today as they ride along Aldinga Beach.

No attacks as of yet, but the pace is high and the bunch looks nervous as they turn into the wind.

An EF Education Easypost rider makes the first attack, but the peloton is quick to shut down the solo attempt.

122km to go

The peloton has turned right on to Willunga Road and into a cross headwind.

It looks like we're getting some action off the front of the peloton. Three riders are off the front and some others trying to bridge.

There are a few teams keen to get riders up the road. The numbers are growing as more riders attempt to bridge in the crosswind.

It's strung out as the peloton pulls back this first danger move of the day.

UAE Team Emirates is at the front driving the pace in the wind. Today's the last chance for the sprinters today, but the elements are going to make things difficult for their teams to control.

We have two on the attack. Names to follow.

The peloton has eased off and is getting some fuel from one of the feed zones.

100km to go

It's Jonas Rutsch (EF Education Easypost) and Daryl Impey (Israel Premier Tech) who have escaped off the front. They have about 1'33" on the bunch with inside 100km to go.

The gap is up to 3 minutes for the two riders off the front. UAE is leading the peloton.

We're getting close to the first king of the mountain climb at Lower Willunga Hill. They'll reach the top at KM 51.

With 80km to go, the peloton has allowed the duo up the road almost four minutes. They've gone through the township of Willunga where large crowds are there to greet them at the first time through the finish line.

Jonas Rutsch is the first to get over the KOM at Lower Willunga Hill.

The wind is playing havoc out there in the peloton. Crosswinds have cause some splits in the bunch and Taj Jones and Leo Basso have crashed. It's the second crash in two days for Basso.

And we've gone through the first intermediate sprint, but the duo don't contest it. Daryl Impey gets across first, followed by Rutsch. Michael Matthews is third out of the peloton.

The gap has gone way down to just a minute with 65km to go. The peloton isn't playing around at this point.

A mix of sprinters teams are trading off at the front of the peloton. It won't be long before they track down the breakaway.

Another kangaroo sighting along the route! This roo was traveling right with the peloton getting a front row seat.

The riders off the front have been reabsorbed, but the peloton is still split into two groups on the road. The second group is a minute behind.

AG2R is keeping the speed up in the first group on the road.

Daryl Impey (Team Israel Premier Tech) and Jonas Rutsch (Team EF Education - Easypost) made up the early breakaway. They're back in the peloton now which is still split in two.

The break at the tour down under

40km to go and they just heard the bell for one more lap.

They're back into the crosswind section and its desperate moments for the chase group.

Ineos is happy to make this a tough race today. They're driving hard at the front with a gap to the second bunch of 20 seconds.

Full results of the KOM on Lower Willunga Hill:

1. Mikkel Honore - 3

2. Marc Hirschi - 2

3. Ben Swift - 1

The second bunch is now 37 seconds behind. They may not come back before the end of this stage as they continue to lose time to the first group.

It's tense today as the winds continue to play a huge factor in the outcome. There are still two groups on the road with less than 30km to go.

Tour of Down Under Stage 4

Hugo Page (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty) won the intermediate sprint, putting him in third place in the best young rider competition and 9th overall.

Second over the line was Gradek and third was Yates, but the judges may take a look at the bit of argy bargy the Bahrain Victorious rider did to push Yates off his teammates' wheel.

The gap in between groups is 37 seconds. This is Ewan's last chance to get that elusive win, and he's in a good position to do so.

At this point ,the white flag is up for the chasing bunch. It's going to be a sprint amongst the riders in the first group.

They've been flying along today. The average speed has been about 47 kph.

In fact, they're 15 minutes ahead of the fastest schedule today, despite the wind!

Jay Vine is sitting comfortably in the front group with the entire UAE team around him.

Just 6km left in the stage. Ag2R has also been a big presence at the front as well.

Not long now before the sprint! The noted sprinters are vying for position.

UAE Team Emirates is leading the peloton.

Now EF Education is pulling through to the front as is Ag2R again.

Now Intermarche is comes up to the front.

Ewan might have come to the front a bit early, he's drifting farther back but is still behind Michael Matthews and a bit boxed in.

Now there's an uphill drag before they reach the final kilometre.

Matthews is in about 7th wheel, and Ewan is too far back.

But it's Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) who wins stage 4! He left them all behind with a tremendous burst of power.

So Coquard wins, Alberto Bettiol (EF Education Easypost) takes second and Hugo Page (Intermarche) was third. What a sprint.

“I love the sprint, it’s a perfect day. A lot of stress today because we have a lot of crosswind … but I was in good position for all the day. For me it was a perfect situation. I am very happy to win my first WorldTour race.” ~ Bryan Coquard

It took him four stages, but Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) finally has a win at this year’s Santos Tour Down Under after sprinting to victory in Victor Harbor. But what might have looked like a routine sprint stage in the race book (and on the results sheet) was anything but, with crosswinds, a selective climb and changes to the general classification all making for a memorable day’s racing.

The longest climb of the day came straight after the neutral zone in Glen Osmond with the riders taking the Princes Freeway up into the Adelaide hills near Stirling. Riders were getting popped off the back of the main field in just a few kilometres as BMC controlled the pace at the front.

An early breakaway attempt from Perrig Quemeneur (Europcar) and Carlos Verona Quintanilla (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) lasted over the top of the uncategorised freeway climb and down through Aldgate but 15km into the stage they’d been brought back.

Orica-GreenEDGE was on the front of the main field, controlling the pace ahead of the first intermediate sprint at 25.5km — an intermediate sprint Simon Gerrans was desperate to win in order to claw back a few bonus seconds on race leader Cadel Evans.

Gerrans enjoyed an impressive lead-out from his team and jumped to take the three bonus seconds and five points in a classification he already leads. Gerrans’ teammate Matt Goss took second over the line while Nathan Haas (Garmin-Sharp), who rode so impressively yesterday to take second into Campbelltown, took the remaining bonus second.

With the intermediate sprint out of the way Orica-GreenEDGE and BMC seemed far happier to let a group get up the road. Five riders — Axel Domont (AG2R), Yukiya Arashiro (Europcar), Cameron Wurf (Cannondale), Wes Sulzberger (Drapac) and Thomas Anderson (Giant-Shimano) — got away and held a two minute advantage by the time 37km had been covered.

After extending their advantage to roughly five minutes the lead group broke apart with Cameron Wurf and Axel Domont moving clear and the remaining three riders fading back towards the main field.

As the riders headed west towards Mt. Compass and the feedzone Wurf and Domont’s advantage started to gradually come down as BMC controlled the pace at the front for their leader Cadel Evans.

profile

The pace up the climb, combined with strong crosswinds on the south-western run towards Carrickalinga, forced a split in the main bunch. In the front group of roughly 40 riders were the main contenders, including Cadel Evans and Simon Gerrans and several of the big name sprinters — Andre Greipel, Jonathan Cantwell (Drapac) and Elia Viviani (Cannondale).

Missing were the likes of Marcel Kittel (Giant-Shimano), Matt Goss and Mark Renshaw (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), the last of whom reportedly mistimed a nature break and missed the split.

By the time the lead group had descended to Normanville (roughly 110km into the 149km-long stage), the two breakaway riders of Wurf and Domont were in their midst. In the chase group, Giant-Shimano was leading a spirited charge to try and get their sprinter Marcel Kittel back in the fold. But a short time later they sat up, the roughly-70-strong bunch enjoying a cruisey spin for the remaining 20km into Victor Harbor.

The day’s second and final intermediate sprint came after 116km as the riders turned south east towards their final destination. Orica-GreenEDGE turned up the heat in support of Simon Gerrans once again but it was Nathan Haas who stormed past the Australian national road race champion to take maximum points (five) and three bonus seconds.

Gerrans had to settle for two bonus seconds after crossing the line behind Haas, reducing the gap between he and Cadel Evans to just seven seconds.

Evans himself, resplendent in the race leader’s ochre jersey, had been looking comfortable in the run in to the second intermediate sprint, but a mechanical issue forced him out of the contest and necessitated a bike change.

STDU14_Bupa_Stage_4_profile_LR

But with Lotto-Belisol determined to bring the race down to a bunch sprint, the two Belgians’ small advantage was erased with just 600m remaining in the stage.

After chasing down the escapees Lotto-Belisol continued the hard work, leading out Andre Greipel who took a comfortable win and a record 15th stage victory at the Santos Tour Down Under. Greipel’s teammate Jurgen Roelandts made it a Lotto-Belisol one-two while Elia Viviani took the final place on the podium.

Simon Gerrans crossed the line in fourth place and missed out on a time bonus. But there was little more he or his team could have done. They controlled the early race and ensured Gerrans took the maximum time bonus at the first sprint point. They did similar at the second but were upstaged by Haas. And they weren’t far off the mark in the final sprint either.

It would have taken a Gerrans win in both intermediate sprints and the finale today to have won back the ochre jersey and even if he had, the general classification would still have come down to tomorrow’s stage-ending climb up Old Willunga Hill Road, as it does now.

Tomorrow’s stage promises to be a great showdown between Evans and Gerrans. Chances are we’ll see the latter heading out in search of the intermediate sprints again because if it’s left to the final climb up Willunga, Gerrans will need to find eight seconds on Evans — either at the finish or in win bonuses — or rely on time bonuses in Sunday’s race around the streets of Adelaide.

Meanwhile Nathan Haas is on the charge and a real chance of a overall podium, given he’s just nine seconds behind the winner of stage 2, Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida), in third place. We’ve seen four terrific stages at the Santos Tour Down Under so far this year and that trend will almost certainly continue tomorrow.

The Santos Tour Down Under has delivered a historic maiden WorldTour stage win for Frenchman Bryan Coquard.

Coquard (Cofidis) crossing the finish line at Willunga town on Saturday saw the Santos Tour Down Under also deliver a fourth winner from a different nation in an intriguing 2023 edition of the race.

The 30-year-old claimed the Think! Road Safety Stage 4 victory ahead of Wednesday’s efex Prologue winner Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) and Hugo Page (Intermarche Circus Wanty).

“I have waited for 10 years for this first WorldTour win,’’ an elated Coquard said.

“I think I had a bad start to the race, I have won many races but no WorldTour races, I am very happy about this.

“It was nice to smell this team spirit with the guys who I can win.”

Coquard joins Italy’s Bettiol, Germany’s Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious), Australia’s Rohan Dennis (Jumbo Visma) and Spain’s Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) as unique international stage winners.

The Cofidis sprinter currently sits 13th in the overall rankings after his empathic victory.

Jay Vine (UAE Emirates) is still the race leader, 15 seconds ahead of Bilbao and Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla).

The reigning Australian time trial champion is just 112.5km from claiming his first WorldTour GC when the Schwalbe stage 5 Unley to Mount Lofty pedals off from 11.30 am on Sunday.

Race Highlights

Daryl Impey (Israel-Premier Tech) and Jonas Rutsch (EF Education-EasyPost) led a breakaway and opened up a 3min:49sec gap in the first real piece of the action for stage 4.

Rutsch was first over the line on High Street, Willunga followed by two-time Tour Down Under champion Impey.

Mikkel Honore (EF Education-Easypost) came third in a sprint to the line, edging a point closer to efex King of the Mountain leader Jay Vine (UAE Emirates).

Taj Jones (Israel-Premier Tech) re-joined the race after a nasty crash just after the first efex King of the Mountain at lower Willunga.

The sound of the bell warning the peloton that this was the final lap of stage 4 saw the serious GC contenders on the chase to the finish line.

Honore earned the maximum KOM points, Marc Hirschi (UAE Emirates) was second and Ben Swift (Ineos Grenadiers) earned a point for third place.

Honore’s KOM points bonus saw him leapfrog Vine in the virtual KOM classification at that stage of the race.

This sprint was chaotic, elbows appeared to be out before 21-year-old Frenchman Hugo Page (Intermarche Circus Wanty) earned maximum time bonuses.

Poland’s Kamil Gredik (Bahrain Victorious) finished second and Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla) picked up the third, time bonus.

Yates’ bonus second equalled Pello Bilbao’s 15-second gap to race leader Vine in the virtual classification with just 22.8km before the finish.

It came down to a bunch sprint finish where Coqurd upstaged the favorites at the Willunga township finish line on a sunny and windy day.

Meanwhile, the serious GC contenders Vine, Bilbao and Yates all came through unscathed in another fitting finale in Willunga.

At Santos, we’re proud to partner with organisations and support events across our operating footprint, to give back to the communities where we operate. Year after year, the Santos Tour Down Under continues to innovate, injecting millions into the economy and creating hundreds of new jobs.

Santos has played an integral role in the Tour Down Under (TDU), particularly elevating the women’s race to become a UCI WorldTour event, the top level of road cycling competition. Back in 2018, Santos supported equal prize money for men and women, and now in 2023 reaching UCI status is another milestone that everyone can be proud of.

The final race in Mount Lofty, yesterday, celebrated the conclusion of another remarkably successful festival.

Women’s Race

Congratulations to Grace Brown, winner of Stage 3 and overall winner of the 2023 Santos Women’s Tour Down Under.

“I don’t really have words for it. It’s really special. I never really thought that I would ever become a GC [General Classification] rider. But races like this really suit me and I have a team that believes in me,” Brown said after her victory.

Santos is proud to support an event that puts women at the forefront of sport, placing homegrown and international racing talent on the global stage.

Santos would also like to congratulate Jay Vine, the overall winner of the 2023 Santos Men’s Tour Down Under. The 27-year-old is the ninth Australian to claim the General Classification at the Santos Tour Down Under.

“I think it’s special to join a new team and it’s also my first (WorldTour) General Classification in my own country,” Vine said to the media after his win.

Best Dressed Town

Finally, Santos’ annual ‘Best Dressed Town’ was awarded to Woodside in the Adelaide Hills.

The community utilised recycled and pre-loved materials to decorate the town, and was awarded $1,000 and various prizes.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

santos tour down under 2023 stage 4

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

santos tour down under 2023 stage 4

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

santos tour down under 2023 stage 4

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

santos tour down under 2023 stage 4

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

santos tour down under 2023 stage 4

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

santos tour down under 2023 stage 4

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Your guide to the 2023 Santos Tour Down Under Men’s Stages

Stages in detail.

Australia’s greatest cycling race is back to launch the international cycling season – and you’re invited to share every epic moment. Race director Stuart O’Grady OAM has waited three years to deliver these men’s stages. They celebrate South Australia at its best, taking the peloton from world-famous wine country to the dazzling Port Willunga beach and the summit of Mount Lofty. One thing is for sure: there’s work ahead for those ready to make their mark.

Definitive elements of the race

Stages for the fans   O’Grady has designed a race that takes fans to the heart of the action. Spend a summer evening at the prologue. Watch the pros tackle five laps around Tanunda on stage one. Get a group together for a day at McLaren Vale wineries Penny’s Hill or d’Arenberg on stage four – or line Mount Lofty Summit Road on stage five (O’Grady’s answer to the famed Cauberg climb from the Amstel Gold Race). Bring your cowbell – it’s time to make some noise.

efex Prologue We’re starting the Santos Tour Down Under like never before. Gather beside the Torrens in Adelaide’s centre for a prologue that promises fast, technical racing – plus a chance for GC contenders to exert their influence early.

Port Willunga features Port Willunga is the stuff summer dreams are made of: sparkling turquoise water, an atmospheric old jetty and shipwreck, plus a world-class restaurant overlooking it all. There’s good reason it frequently makes the list of top national beaches. This South Australian paradise will host the start of stage four, with riders to travel through McLaren Vale’s lauded vineyards before finishing on the main street of Willunga.

Lofty finish   A formidable new ascent looms on the race’s final stage. Mount Lofty is Adelaide’s highest point: a fitting scene for the battle ahead. It’s the first time this iconic climb has been part of the Santos Tour Down Under, and there will be ample opportunity to watch the world’s best as they slog it out to the KOM point in front of Mount Lofty House near Mawson Road. They’ll pass this point twice: at 33.8 and 86.8km.

SCHWALBE CLASSIC

This curtain-raiser always sets the scene for a great week of racing. Success here doesn’t count towards standings in the Santos Tour Down Under, but good form in central Adelaide always indicates the riders who mean business.

In 2023 the Classic will start and finish in Flinders Street, skirting the Tour Village in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, continuing down Wakefield Street and along a section of Pulteney Street before a left turn back on to Flinders. Prime sprints will take place at 15, 30 and 45 minutes into racing. O’Grady describes it as a simple, fast circuit – one set to deliver all the excitement of international cycling once again.

efex PROLOGUE

At a glance   The best way to welcome back Australia’s greatest cycling race? A city prologue. It’s an event first – one sure to test the peloton. The 5.5-kilometre Adelaide Riverbank route begins on the footbridge and finishes near the Elder Park Rotunda, with tight turns and a dive-bomb descent in the mix. Will local legend, Olympic bronze medallist and former world time trial champion Rohan Dennis take victory? Anything is possible as greatness returns.

Up close   Our time trial will be ridden on road bikes and is the first Santos Tour Down Under men’s stage for 2023. Action will unfold from 6pm until about 8:30pm and is sure to be fast and exciting. The prologue format means fans can settle in and cheer each rider on as they tackle the course – War Memorial Drive, MacKinnon Parade, Bundeys Road and Victoria Drive feature.

Ochre and sprint jerseys will be presented on the night, while the race’s first king of the mountains winner will be awarded after stage one. Maximum elevation for the prologue route is 45 metres, with 57 metres of climbing in total. It’s man versus clock in this all-out effort.

The finish   Gather beside the Elder Park Rotunda to see the world’s best get to work. It promises to be an unforgettable evening – views across the Torrens to Adelaide Oval, a summer sunset and the cityscape surrounding it. Australia’s greatest cycling race is back.

ZIPTRAK STAGE ONE : TANUNDA TO TANUNDA

At a glance   The open road awaits. Tanunda – in South Australia’s beautiful Barossa region – will host both the start and finish of stage one. At just over 150 kilometres of racing it’s the second-longest stage in the 2023 Santos Tour Down Under and a chance for sprinters to shine. Nuriootpa, Angaston, Bethany and Greenock will all welcome the peloton. A section of this stage also appeared in the 2021 Santos Festival of Cycling men’s race, where Luke Durbridge took victory with an 80-kilometre solo break on day one. Fans are invited to settle in for the spectacle – come and spend a day in world-famous wine country.

Sprints   Big bunch sprints are on the cards as the men get out of town. Both intermediate sprints will take place across the line in Tanunda – look for the peloton pushing through at the 45.6km and 97.8km marks. The peloton will pass through Tanunda four times in total before the stage finish.

Climbs   Get ready for four ascents of Menglers Hill – a category four climb found east of Tanunda – with those at 58.2km and 110.4km offering points in the king of the mountains classification. We’ll see a maximum elevation of 502 metres and 2053 metres of climbing.

Finish   The world’s best cyclists will travel through Bethany on Barossa Valley Way before turning right and storming to the line in Murray Street. Tanunda has hosted nine finishes since the Santos Tour Down Under began – but never before from this direction.

OAKLEY STAGE TWO: BRIGHTON TO VICTOR HARBOR

At a glance Stage two is all about the coast. It will start in beachside Brighton – another event first – and trace the esplanade before a sprint at Aldinga’s Snapper Point. Look for the peloton crossing Myponga dam wall and sprinting through Yankalilla before descending into Victor Harbor for a big finish. At 155.9km this is the longest of the Santos Tour Down Under’s five road stages. It’s set to be pivotal.      Sprints   The day’s first sprint is due to take place 33.6km into the stage at Snapper Point. From there the peloton will continue along the esplanade, taking a left on to Norman Road before following Main South Road through to Yankalilla. This charming Fleurieu Peninsula town will host the second intermediate sprint for the day – 71.7km into the stage.

Climbs   There’s 2401 metres of climbing on stage two, with the first KOM set for Parawa Hill at the 87.2km mark. It’s a category two ascent. The second KOM, taking place at Nettle Hill Road – 133.9km into racing – is a brutal category one. Those with good legs over this short, difficult climb will be well positioned for the final 15km push to Victor Harbor. Climbers and all-rounders may well seize it as the launchpad for a late attack.

Finish   Action will culminate at the intersection of Albert Place and the Esplanade in Victor Harbor. We’ve seen blistering sprints to the line here before – who will have what it takes at the first UCI WorldTour event of the year?

HAHN STAGE THREE: NORWOOD TO CAMPBELLTOWN

At a glance   This one is going to hurt. The peloton will start in Norwood and tackle three of Adelaide’s toughest ascents, navigating Norton Summit, Checkers Hill and Corkscrew Road before finishing in Campbelltown. Those with an eye on overall victory – and strength in the mountains – will be in the mix here. This stage also features race director Stuart O’Grady’s favourite spot to ride in South Australia: beautiful Basket Range Road in the Adelaide Hills.

Sprints The stage’s two sprints will take place through Lobethal – 29 kilometres into racing – and then at the 64-kilometre mark in Williamstown. They will follow the Ashton climb and are slotted in before the day’s remaining two ascents. As the legendary Jens Voigt would say: shut up legs!

Climbs   King of the mountains will be a fitting title for the rider who prevails on this gruelling stage. First comes the category two Ashton climb – just 9.6km into the route – followed by two consecutive category one ascents: Checker Hill at 82.2km, then a fast descent into the notorious Corkscrew Road at 111km. An attack on this final climb could offer the dual rewards of stage win and overall lead. Total elevation for the day is 555 metres, with 2447 metres of climbing.

Finish   Tight, fast turns down Montacute Road are in store after riders complete the Corkscrew Road climb. Once over the summit it’s about six and a half kilometres to the finish line in Campbelltown. This is the same stretch of road where Australian cycling legend Cadel Evans broke away in 2014, averaging 49 km/h on the descent to triumphantly take the stage win.

THINK! ROAD SAFETY STAGE FOUR: PORT WILLUNGA - WILLUNGA TOWNSHIP

At a glance   We’re off to Willunga on this penultimate stage – but not as you know it. Get ready for a stage start at Port Willunga: a beach rated among Australia’s very best. And rather than ascending the slopes of Willunga Hill as in years past, the peloton will tackle a 135-kilometre stage set to take in McLaren Vale, celebrated wineries including d’Arenberg and Penny’s Hill, and the township of Willunga (there it is again!). The scene is set for a blistering sprint finish.       Sprints Stage four of the men’s race is another chance for the sprinters to step up. It’s also one that offers great viewing opportunities, including start and finish locations within easy reach of each other. Both of the day’s sprints will take place at Aldinga’s Snapper Point (also the site of sprints during stage two). The first will come with 69.5km of racing complete, with the second at 110.4km.

Climbs Climbing isn’t a significant feature of this stage, with its two KOM ascents to take place in the township of Willunga. They will occur at 51.4km and 92.3km into the stage respectively, with total elevation for the day 197 metres and 1436 metres of climbing.

Finish   The day’s finish is set to be another first for the Santos Tour Down Under. Never before have riders completed a stage on the main street of Willunga township, instead ascending Willunga Hill in years past. This time they’ll tackle a slightly uphill push to the line, a technical approach that demands aggression and exceptional bike handling skills.

SCHWALBE STAGE FIVE: UNLEY - MOUNT LOFTY

At a glance The formidable Mount Lofty will make its first Santos Tour Down Under appearance on this final day of racing. O’Grady has kept the ascent in mind since taking on race director responsibilities. Now the time has come. Riders will leave from the inner-south suburb of Unley and travel up the old freeway, with the end of race neutral set to come at the notorious Devil’s Elbow. Next up: four passes of 25-kilometre loop through the Adelaide Hills – Summertown, Uraidla, Carey Gully, Bridgewater, Aldgate, Stirling and Crafers all feature.

Get out on Mount Lofty Summit Road to cheer the peloton up a long, Euro-style climb – or be there atop the mountain waiting to see who has what it takes. At 112.5 kilometres this decider is set to be short, sharp and furious. We can’t wait.

Sprints   It’s going to be a tough day in the saddle for sprinters. The stage’s two intermediate sprints will take place along Greenhill Road in Uraidla at 15.3 and 67km respectively. Riders will remain on this road as it travels south-east towards Carey Gully.

Climbs The stage has only one – but it will be climbed four times. You’ll find the KOM mark in front of Mount Lofty House, close to the lush Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens. Points will be on offer at 33.6 and 85.3km into racing, with each pass potentially influential in overall standings. O’Grady designed this finale to create an aggressive race, but those going for victory will also have to play a very tactical game. Anything could happen on this short, difficult stage.

Finish   The stage winner will be decided high on Mount Lofty Summit Road, just before the lookout turnoff. Gather here to watch the triumphant victor celebrate, and to discover who will claim ochre for 2023. It promises to be a moment to remember – an emphatic start to the new UCI WorldTour season.
