If you have dozens of tabs open in Safari on iPhone or iPad and need to clear them out quickly, it can be tedious to "X" them out one at a time. Luckily, there are two ways to close all your Safari tabs at once, and they also work in Private Browsing mode. Here's how.

First, open "Safari" on your iPhone or iPad. While on any page, locate the tab switcher button, which looks like two overlapping squares. On the iPad, you'll find it in the upper-right corner of the screen.

On the iPhone, it's in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Place your finger on the tab switcher button and hold it there for a moment, preforming a "long press." In the menu that pops up, select "Close All Tabs." (There will be a number in the choice that lists the number of open tabs.)

When Safari asks you to confirm with another pop-up, tap "Close All Tabs" again. After that, all of your browser tabs will close.

There's another way to quickly close all tabs in Safari on iPhone and iPad. First, open "Safari," then tap the tab switcher button once.

On the tab switcher screen, locate the "Done" button, which is located in the upper-right corner of the screen on the iPad and in the lower-right corner of the screen on the iPhone.

Long-press the "Done" button — place and hold your finger there for a moment until a pop-up appears. In the pop-up, select "Close All Tabs." The exact name of the pop-up action will vary, depending on the number of tabs you have open.

Safari will ask you to confirm closing all the tabs with another pop-up message. Select "Close All Tabs" again. Then all of your Safari tabs will close instantly. The same action works in Private Browsing mode. Pretty handy!

If you accidentally closed all of your tabs and would like to get them back, you can retrieve them one at a time as long as you aren't in Private Browsing mode . Just tap the tab switcher button, then long-press the "+" button until a "Recently Closed Tabs" list appears . From there you can tap on entries in the list to open them again in Safari. Good luck!

Ever close a browser tab by accident or lost a number of tabs after Safari crashed? It happens to the best of us. Thankfully, you can quickly reopen your last closed tab or restore tabs from your last browsing session with the tips below.

Open the Last Closed Tab in Safari on the Mac

Safari lets you undo your action of closing a tab--as long as you act promptly. If you close a tab by mistake and then open a new tab, you won't be able to restore the closed tab with the shortcut below, because the undo feature only works on your last action.

In OS X, after closing a tab, press Command+Z , the standard Mac keyboard shortcut for Undo. Your lost tab will be instantly restored. Alternatively, you can go to the Edit menu and select "Undo Close Tab".

For other tabs you've closed before the last one, head to the History men u for the list of sites you've recently visited.

Reopen Closed Windows in Safari on the Mac

You can also reopen a Safari window with the tabs you had open even days after closing the window or quitting Safari.

If you have more than one Safari window open and close one by mistake, go to the History menu and select "Reopen Last Closed Window."

If you quit Safari and want to restart it with all of the tabs you had open last time, go to the History menu and select Reopen All Windows from Last Session.

All tabs closing in safari without warning when closing a window...

Hi! This started happening about two weeks ago, but every time there's a window in safari with many tabs and I click the close button it doesn't ask me if I'm sure i want to close it, like it did before...any clues why? Thanks!

I just downloaded Lion. Prior to that, I had a warning appear when I attempted to close multiple tabs. Now I don't, AND there is nothing on the Preferences >> Tabs box to enable it. Any help??

I believe it doesn't do it in Lion because of Resume. If you reopen Lion, all of your tabs should open back up

The other reason seems to be that Apple feels the Reopen Last Closed Window and Reopen All Windows From Last Session commands (in the History menu), together with the Undo Close Tab command (in the Edit menu), provide enough safeguards against "lost tabs." Click to expand...

I work in SalesForce all day, and there are times when I type a long email message in it, then want to switch to another application to copy something. I miss CMD+TAB and accidentally hit CMD+Q which is right next to it. Now Safari just quits without asking, and even though relaunching it will bring back all my tabs, all the message I have typed and not sent yet is now lost. I can see why Apple thinks that that warning is not necessary, but I do not understand why they have removed the option to turn the warning back completely. I did loose a lot of work several times ever since I am on Lion.

in leu of warning after closing tabs, do this: If you inadvertently close a browser window and it's tabs, you can easily recover it by choosing Reopen Last Closed Window from the History menu.

How to Keep Safari Open Even After Closing the Last Tab

Safari automatically exits when you close the last tab and there's no setting to disable this feature, but there's a workaround you can use.

When you’re down to the last tab on Safari and you hit Command+W  to close that tab, Safari closes the window itself. This is one of Safari’s most annoying quirks. Thankfully, it does have a workaround that involves creating a simple keyboard shortcut .

When you have multiple tabs open in Safari, if you go to the File menu, you’ll see that the Command+W  shortcut is assigned to the Close Tab function. So far so good.

Now close all unpinned tabs except one and visit the File menu again. What do you see? The Command+W  shortcut appears assigned to the Close Window function. No wonder Safari closes the window when you use that shortcut.

To fix this behavior, first go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts . Click on the + icon below the section on the right to create a new Safari shortcut.

In the dialog that pops up, choose Safari from the Application: dropdown, type Close Tab in the Menu Title: field, and hit Command+W  when the cursor is in the Keyboard Shortcut: field. Save the shortcut by clicking on the Add button.

This tweak forces Command+W  to trigger the Close Tab function every time you use it. The drawback here is that if you do want to close the last tab, you’ll have to close the window, either by clicking on the window's  Close button or by hitting Command+Shift+W .

You might also want to try the AppleScript  shared in this Reddit thread to make Safari open a blank new tab when you close the last tab in that window. It did not work for me though.

When the Opening dialog box appears, click Save File .

Press Ctrl+J to open the download Library. When the download Library window appears, double-click the .exe file for Acrobat Reader.

If prompted to open the executable file, click OK .

When you see the confirmation message that the installation is complete, click  Finish .

Chrome: Download and install Acrobat Reader

Follow these steps to install Acrobat Reader using Google Chrome.

Windows 11 version 23H2 is the latest feature update for Windows 11 (until version 24H2 later this year), Microsoft's operating system that launched back in 2021. Also known as the Windows 11 2023 Update, it was officially released in November 2023, and it's now widely available for any PC compatible with Windows 11. Installing this update should be fairly easy, but if you're not sure of what you need to do, we're here to help.

Windows 11 version 23H2: Everything that's new in the latest feature update

If you're already running Windows 11, you should have no worries getting the latest update, seeing as there are no changes to the system requirements. But if you're still on Windows 10, you'll need to meet the system requirements for Windows 11 as a whole. Here's a quick rundown:

• CPU: 1GHz or faster with two or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or system on chip (SoC)
• RAM: 4GB or more
• Storage: 64GB or more
• System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable
• TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
• GPU: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver
• Display: High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9 inches diagonally, 8 bits per color channel

Here are the CPUs that are compatible with Windows 11

Power users can install Windows 11 on almost any unsupported PC , though there are some risks with doing this, since updates may not work as intended and you won't be able to get support from Microsoft if needed.

Before upgrading your OS, it's vital that you set up a full backup of your PC so you don't lose any valuable personal data if things go awry.

You can rely on the new Windows Backup app , but we also recommend you use some of the alternative backup solutions available so you have the peace of mind of knowing you have an off-site backup of your personal data. Move your important files to OneDrive or a USB flash drive, just in case the upgrade doesn't go as expected.

How to back up your Windows 11 PC

The easiest way to get Windows 11 version 23H2 is to use Windows Update on a supported PC. To do this follow these steps:

• Open the Settings app
• Click Windows Update in the side menu.
• Click Check for updates .
• You'll see a message similar (with slightly different text) to the one below, saying Windows 11 version 23H2 is available. Click Download & install .

After restarting your PC, you should be good to go with Windows 11 version 23H2. It's possible you won't see a ton of changes, as most of the features in this update were also made available to version 22H2 as part of Microsoft's confusing release strategy. Officially, version 23H2 barely includes any changes, and this is a very fast update to install.

If the method above doesn't work for you, you can use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant. If you download a full WIndows 11 image from Microsoft, you'll get the latest updates out of the box, so you don't need to use Windows Update at all. For this, simply follow these steps:

• Go to the Windows 11 download page
• Run the program and follow the steps to download and install the latest version of Windows 11.

Keep in mind that using this method means downloading an entire Windows 11 image. That means the download and install process will take much longer, so be sure to make time for it if you plan on doing it this way. Alternatively, you can use the Media Creation Tool to install Windows 11 from scratch with a USB drive, though this will take even longer.

How to download and install Windows 11

If you don't want to use Windows Update or it just isn't working for you, you can download it manually. Microsoft doesn't offer a straightforward way to download the enablement package by itself, as it's not listed on the Microsoft Update Catalog. Thankfully, with some sleuthing, you can grab the files, which we've linked to below.

The update package will only install if you're running Windows 11 build 22621.2355 or higher. You can check your current build number in Settings > System > About .

Generally speaking, the MSU file above is much easier to use, but the CAB file may be preferred in some cases. Unless you know you want the CAB version, though, stick with MSU.

If you're using the MSU file, all you need to do is run it once it finishes downloading, and the update will install, prompting you to reboot your computer.

If you're using the CAB file, you'll need to use Windows Terminal to install the update. Here's how:

• Right-click the CAB file you downloaded and choose Copy as path .
• Right-click the Start menu icon (or press Windows + X on your keyboard) and choose Terminal (Admin) .
• Enter the following command, replacing <path_to_cabfile_> with the path copied in step 1: dism /online /add-package /packagepath:<path_to_cabfile>
• Wait for the process to finish, then reboot your PC to finish setting up.

Final thoughts

And that's about all you need to know if you want to manually install Windows 11 version 23H2 on your PC. Fix 1: Adjust System and Performance Settings in Edge for Reduced CPU Usage

Step 1: Launch Microsoft Edge.

Step 2: Click on the System and performance tab on the right, then on the left, you may do the following:

• Disable Startup Boost .
• Toggle off Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed .
• Update Preferred method of video enhancement .
• Enable Efficiency Mode .
• Enable Save resources with sleeping tabs .
• Enable Fade sleeping tabs .
• Reduce the value for Put inactive tabs to sleep after the specified amount of time .
• Enable Performance detector .

Fix 2: Use Microsoft Edge’s Task Manager to Close Unwanted Tabs

To start, use Microsoft Edge’s built-in task manager to identify resource-hungry tabs and close them. If it’s nothing major, this may drastically reduce Edge’s memory usage.

Step 1: Launch the browser and press Shift + Esc on your keyboard to open the Browser Task Manager.

Step 2: Click on the Memory column to sort tabs based on their RAM usage. Select unwanted tabs and use the End process button to close them.

Fix 3: Disable Collections

This feature allows you to follow content creators and save videos and multimedia to your Collections. However, it may be resource-intensive. When you disable it, you minimize the CPU power required by your browser.

Step 1: Launch the Microsoft Edge browser, type the path below in the address bar, and hit Enter .

Step 2: Toggle off the option for Show Collections and follow content creators in Microsoft Edge .

Fix 4: Disable Microsoft Defender SmartScreen

If none of the previous solutions helped fix Microsoft Edge’s high CPU usage, the last thing you can do is disable Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. Though the Microsoft Defender SmartScreen in Microsoft Edge is a useful security feature, it requires your computer to constantly monitor each site you visit or the files you download, which can increase the overall CPU usage.

Note: Disabling Microsoft Defender SmartScreen makes your computer vulnerable to threats and malware. Therefore, be careful about the sites you visit and the content you download from the Internet.

Step 2: Type the below URL in the address bar and hit Enter .

Step 3: Scroll down to the Security section and disable the toggle for Microsoft Defender SmartScreen .

If the problem persists, ensure it it not a general high CPU problem in the computer .

iOS Safari not closing tabs automatically

I have set the close tabs option for my Safari browser iPhone 12 - iOS 14.7.1.

(settings->safari->close tabs -> After one day)

However, tabs continue to exist or stay open after one day.

This issue is consistent on a new iPhone 12 as it was on my previous iPhone 11.

Thanks for reaching out through the Apple Support Communities about your Safari tabs not closing automatically.

To verify, those tabs hadn’t been viewed in over 24 hours. Did we get that right?

If so, did you restore your new iPhone 12 from a backup of your prior iPhone 11?

Do you sync your Safari tabs with any other devices? Set up and use iCloud Tabs If so, does that still continue if you temporarily disable the Safari option in the iCloud settings?

Hopefully those details will help to further isolate and address your situation.

The fate of Google’s search business is now in the hands of Judge Amit Mehta, as closing arguments concluded in the landmark trial on Friday.

The Department of Justice and plaintiff states made their last arguments Thursday on Google’s alleged anticompetitive conduct in the general search market , and on Friday focused on its allegedly illegal conduct in search advertising. Google was also under fire (separately) for failing to retain chat messages that the DOJ believes could have been relevant to the case.

The government is trying to show that Google locked up key distribution channels for the general search engine market, so that would-be rivals could not grow into significant threats. It says it did so through contracts with phone manufacturers and browser companies to be their exclusive default search engine. If the judge agrees that Google successfully foreclosed competition in that market, he can consider the government’s arguments about the search advertising market as evidence of anticompetitive conduct.

In his summary, DOJ attorney Kenneth Dintzer said that the last major tech monopoly decision, US v. Microsoft , “fits like a glove” on Google. Google’s lead litigator in the case, John Schmidtlein, disagreed. In Microsoft , he said, manufacturers were coerced into deals and customers were spoon-fed an inferior product they didn’t want. “Google has won with a superior product,” he said.

“The importance and significance of this case is not lost on me,” Mehta said as he concluded Friday’s court proceedings. “Not only for Google, but for the public.”

An adequate substitute for Google ads

If Google charges higher prices for advertising, are there suitable substitutes that advertisers would flee to? The answer to that question can say a lot about whether or not Google has the monopoly power that the DOJ alleges it has created through the contracts it has to be the default search engine on various browsers and devices. Google says there’s plenty of alternatives for advertisers; the government disagrees. 

Mehta seemed sympathetic to the government’s arguments, though he acknowledged that alternatives to Google are robust ad companies in their own right. Amazon, for instance, isn’t exactly an inferior substitute to Google for ads, said Mehta. Unlike wrapping a sandwich in newspaper instead of cellophane , Mehta said, “If you move your ad money from Google to Amazon, you’re not wrapping your ad in newspaper.”

But Mehta later differentiated ad platforms like Facebook and TikTok from Google. Users searching on Google come with a strong idea of what they’re looking for, pretty much spelling it out in the query. Social media platforms often have to infer that intent from indirect signals.

And that’s why they’re running experiments to say, ‘well if we up it by 15 percent, how much are we going to lose in revenue?’” Mehta said to Schmidtlein. “That’s something that only a monopolist could do, right?” Schmidtlein disagreed, saying it’s fair to run pricing experiments to figure out if they’re charging the right price. 

Mehta pointed out that there was “no evidence that Google ever looks at a competitors’ pricing” for that purpose. Schmidtlein responded it wasn’t that simple. Because ads are sold through a complicated auction, not even Google has total insight into the pricing mechanism behind it. It simply isn’t the same as a Coca-Cola rep walking through a grocery store to see Pepsi’s prices.

Sabotaging ads on Bing

The plaintiff states — the attorneys general for 38 states led by Colorado and Nebraska   that brought the suit alongside the DOJ — are also arguing that Google intentionally dragged its feet when building certain features for SA360, its search engine marketing tool. SA360 helps advertisers manage ads through different platforms — not just Google, but competitors like Microsoft’s Bing. 

The states say that Google lagged behind in building a SA360 feature for Bing ads when it had already implemented it for Google search ads. 

“The evidence here is a little bit tricky for Google,” Mehta said, noting the significance of Google having said rather publicly at the start that it was “not going to play favorites” when it came to SA360. While Google could have chosen to exclude Microsoft from the tool at the outset, “that’s not the choice they made,” Mehta said. 

The tool was not delivered for nearly five years after Microsoft asked for it. “How can that not be at least inferred to be anticompetitive?” Mehta asked. 

Deleted chats

Hanging over the whole case is an issue about whether Google intentionally deleted or failed to retain documents that might have been used as evidence in this trial. 

Google had a policy of having “history off” on its chats by default, leaving it to employees to determine when to turn it on for relevant conversations. DOJ’s Dintzer called the alleged destruction of documents “unequivocal and honestly breathtaking.” He added that “there’s no question” executives “intentionally had conversations with history off.”

“Google’s retention policy leaves a lot to be desired,” said the judge, adding disapprovingly that it was “surprising to me that a company would leave it to their employees to decide when to preserve documents.”

Soon after, Dintzer’s slide deck paused on a slide that simply read “This is Wrong,” as the DOJ attorney pointed out Google never apologized for the unretained documents nor promised not to do it again in the future. He said it’s imperative that the court impose sanctions that show the risk of destroying documents is not worthwhile. The DOJ is asking Mehta to make an adverse inference about Google for any element of the case where he doesn’t think plaintiffs have sufficient evidence. That would mean the judge would assume that any deleted chats would have been bad for Google and showed their anticompetitive intent behind their contracts with manufacturers and browsers. The DOJ also wants Mehta to take the destroyed chats as a signal of its anticompetitive intent.

Google attorney Colette Connor said the company’s lawyers had informed the state of Texas (one of the plaintiffs) early on about their retention policies. Dintzer said even that disclosure came months after the litigation hold and that the DOJ “clearly” would have acted had they known.

Mehta didn’t seem to buy Google’s defense. “It’s interesting to me that Google has been very deliberate — and perhaps after seeing what’s happened with Microsoft – very deliberate in advising employees in what not to say,” he said. In a training for employees, the company advised avoiding terms like “market share.” ( Bloomberg Law has noted this is a common practice in large companies.)

It’s now up to Mehta to decide how those absent chats should be accounted for. He hasn’t provided a timeline for his decision, but in the meantime, Google and the DOJ will be preparing for their second antitrust face-off over advertising technology in the fall .

Sign in to iCloud on all your devices

Many gamers want higher frame rates. But others have plenty of FPS and instead want to maximize image quality. NVIDIA DLAA (Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing) is a new AI-based anti-aliasing mode for users who have spare GPU headroom and want higher levels of image quality. DLAA uses the same technology developed for DLSS, but works on a native resolution image to maximize image quality instead of boosting performance.
