A jungle theme is a common kiddie party theme because there’s just something about animals in the wild that children find cool, mysterious, and amazing. Don’t get me wrong, the theme works for grownups, too. Contrary to popular belief, there are several ways to go about a jungle cake. This list of unique safari and jungle cake ideas will show you.

Having planned several jungle-themed parties for my nephews and friends in the past, I would admit that it can be a real struggle to find a cake that’s unique and different. That’s because when we talk about a jungle cake, we always picture the same elements: animals, trees, leaves, and a color palette that’s mainly brown and green. It’s almost always the same animals, too: lion, giraffe, elephant, and probably a monkey.

The good thing is that you can go for a jungle theme and veer away from the jungle cake cliché because there are some unique jungle cake ideas you can get inspiration from.

My Bottom Line Up Front

A jungle-themed cake is not just for little kids. Grownups, who love nature and animals, would appreciate a jungle cake, too. I would prefer something out of the usual fondant jungle cake with gum paste animals. I’d go for a number cake with buttercream topped with a mix of jungle animal decorations and the usual meringues, chocolates, fruits, and macarons.

Narrowing Down Jungle Cake Ideas

Getting unique jungle cake ideas may be difficult because you would have to sift through so many of the more common ones. So to help you save time, I have done it for you. In selecting these cakes, I made sure they fit the jungle or safari theme or that they have elements representing some of our favorite jungle animals.

I also look for the uniqueness factor. This is the tricky bit because “unique” is relative and could mean different things to different people. For me, however, jungle cakes are unique if they fit any of these criteria:

  • They apply any modern cake decorating trend.
  • They stay away from the traditional fondant animal models.
  • They stay away from using plastic trees and animal toys as toppers or decorations.
  • They are more experimental and adventurous with the use of colors.
  • They don’t stick to the usual color palette of greens and browns.
  • They are more creative in the representation of animals or jungle life.

Jungle Cake Ideas

1. baby jungle cake.

Jungle cakes with fondant animals are quite common and ordinary. So, some cakemakers give it a new — and cuter — twist by modeling the jungle animals as baby animals. The foliage will be done in fondant, too.

This uber-cute first birthday cake has buttercream frosting with a baby lion, baby giraffe, baby monkey, and baby elephant that are finely modeled in fondant. The leaves provide the foliage for this cake.

Here’s another take on baby jungle animals. This fondant cake also has a baby for a safari tour on a jeep. The name on the base is painted in gold, which is pretty trendy these days.

This jungle cake has baby animals in fondant, but it doesn’t have the usual green foliage. Instead, the leaves are pink and brushed with gold on the sides.

2. Cake with Gold-painted Toys

I know that little toy animals are overused as jungle cake toppers. But if you want a unique and modern twist to this otherwise very common jungle cake decoration, paint it gold. Gold, after all, is a very stylish color these days.

This three-tier buttercream birthday cake takes the jungle theme to a higher level by spray-painting the toy animals’ gold. This makes the toys look less plastic and cheap and classy. To make things more interesting, the cakemaker also wrapped the middle tier with a leopard print wafer paper, then topped the cake with dried pampas grass — both of which are modern cake decorating tools.

3. Prehistoric Jungle

Well, if you’ve decided on a jungle theme for your birthday, it doesn’t have to be the jungle as we know it now. You can go back to prehistoric times!z

This vanilla and Nutella jungle cake shows us exactly what we mean when we say prehistoric, with a T-rex and some plastic foliage right on top of it. The T-rex even has a little party hat and bowtie on and is holding a balloon! The cakemaker also showcases their piping skills on this one. That acrylic name in front of the cake adds a touch of elegance and sophistication.

Here’s another take on the prehistoric jungle cake. This time, T-rex is accompanied by a stegosaurus on top. The green pipings are still there to add texture and more greens to an otherwise overly basic cake.

The cakemaker decided to paint the dinosaurs gold for this buttercream cake. There are synthetic leaves for foliage and pallet knife elements on the sides.

4. Quilt-style Jungle Cake

This cute safari or jungle cake has an expertly executed quilted effect, with the fondant animals and other decorative elements sporting “stitches,” thus making them look like they were sewn.

5. Colorful Jungle Cake

A jungle theme doesn’t have to be dominantly green and brown. Experiment with color combinations. Or you can apply the celebrant’s favorite colors.

This fondant jungle cake, for example, is dominantly pink. Some of the leavers, the balls, the elephant’s ears, and the monkey’s party hat are pink.

More colors aren’t a bad idea. That’s what this fondant cake proves. The flowers give this cake a much-needed touch of pinks and purples, plus there’s a little bit of blue added to an otherwise green palette.

Of course, you can do a jungle theme sparingly, and for a lilac or lavender cake at that. There’s not even a tinge of green in sight. This fondant cake also proves that even if you only have an elephant and a monkey, that’s already enough.

6. Number Jungle Cake

Number cakes are very popular and in vogue right now. These are cakes that are shaped in a number from the top view, which number represents the birthday celebrant’s age. So why not incorporate the two concepts and make a number cake with a jungle theme?

This number cake for a baby girl’s first birthday showcases lots of bright colors. It has colorful cream pipings in various shapes and sizes, fondant animal faces, and fondant leaves. Here’s another safari number cake , for a baby boy turning a year old. This cake has a more subdued color palette. The theme is carried out through cookies with iced animal illustrations, leopard print, and leaves.

Take a look at this safari number cake with yellow and green piping. The animals are made of macarons.

7. King of the Jungle Cake with Synthetic Foliage

If you want a jungle-themed cake but want to keep things simple and avoid overcrowding your cake with too many animals, then just pick one. There’s no better choice than the king of the jungle himself: the lion.

A toy lion was painted gold for this cake. And just so nobody makes any mistake about him being the king of the jungle, a gold crown is there on top of the cake with him. Add some plastic foliage for more depth and more greens, sprinkle gold, silver, and white balls, then paint the sides with green buttercream using a pallet knife.

Another cake with just the lion roaring away. This cake has the trendy palm leaf in gold foil, chocolate balls, dried grass and leaves, and palette knife painting.

8. Paper-crafted Animal Toppers

You may want to consider making paper-crafted jungle animals as cake toppers. All you need are color boards or specialized paper products, a pair of scissors, glue, and sticks. If you have a Cricut machine, that would be swell, too!

This cake has animal toppers made out of a textured board.

You can also go for printed paper animal cutouts, like the ones on this cake . It’s also nice that this cake has palette knife painting on the side using soft pastel colors.

Paper animal toppers like these also look very cute on a cake.

You can create paper animals and punch leaves for your foliage .

9. Fondant Foliage

While fondant animal figures aren’t exactly a new and different thing, you can still make your cake look modern and stylish by using trendy foliage. Monstera leaves, for example, are quite trendy these days.

10. Palm Leaf + Stencil

This cake uses a combination of modern decorating techniques to turn an otherwise common theme and make it more contemporary-looking. As you can see, the cakemaker used the usual toy animals, but to give it a unique twist, they added a gold palm leaf and a buttercream stencil design on the side.

How about a light blue, white, and gold buttercream cake with gold palm leaf and subtle stencil at the front ? The animals are your usual toys from the dollar store, but they’ve been painted gold.

11. Piped Animal Frosting

Who says your jungle cake has to be three-dimensional? It could still look totally cute with a 2D decoration. By 2D I mean piping the design in colored buttercream icing on top of the cake so that it could be seen from the top view.

12. Edible Jungle Images

Edible images are pictures that are printed on edible icing paper using edible ink. So you can print jungle animals and use them as toppers. You can find suppliers or sellers online who could print the images you’d like.

Take this three-tier jungle Christening cake for example. All the animals are edible images, while the leaves are modeled from fondant.

13. Animal Cookie Toppers

You can pipe your design on a sugar or butter cookie using royal icing, then use the cookie as a topper. This cake, for instance, has lion and zebra cookies on top of the Swiss vanilla meringue buttercream.

These tiger and cheetah cookies are so meticulously done. They are painted using edible colors.

If you’re going for a prehistoric jungle, you can go for dinosaur cookies. These cookies have a dinosaur skeleton design and are dusted gold. The leaves are made of fondant.

14. Minimalist Jungle Cake

This cake is a great example of a minimalist cake. Its design details are very simple, with very basic shapes. Even the lion topper doesn’t require mad gum paste modeling skills.

15. Animal Fur Wrap Cakes

Edible image cake wraps are yet another cake decorating technique. These are designs or patterns printed on sugar sheets or wafer paper that you can wrap around the sides of your buttercream cake. You can get cake wraps with animal or fur prints for your jungle-themed cake.

This jungle cake has a different fur pattern for each layer. The first layer is wrapped in leopard print, the second layer in zebra print, and the third layer in giraffe print. Fondant animal figures are lounging on top of every tier.

16. The Lion is Not the Star

We can talk about jungles and leave the lions out of it. They’re not always the star of the show. With that being said, you can go ahead and let the giraffe or the zebra take the spotlight.

This pink jungle cake, for instance, only features a fondant giraffe and no other. Top it with dried bunny tails, pink blooms, pink monstera leaves, and pink macarons and you have one very feminine cake.

Here’s not just one, not just two, but three giraffes frolicking in the savanna. This cake is mostly beige and brown, with dried grass and brown buttercream smeared on the sides.

Here’s another gorgeous cake with a zebra at the center of it all. The zebra’s black and white stripes, as well as the black and white cake wrapper, provide a dramatic contrast against the pink surface of the cake.

And why not a giraffe and a zebra together ?

This cake only has a giraffe and an elephant. But what I probably find more unique is that the first tier is in a shade of green I don’t usually see in a jungle cake.

17. No Animals, No Problem

This jungle cake shows you that you can stay true to the theme even without animals involved. You only need leaves, something that says “wild,” and you’re ready.

18. Animal Silhouette Cake

You can cut out animal silhouettes from glittery paper and put them on your buttercream cake. Add a glittery acrylic topper, like this “Wild One” topper, and some foliage to complete the look.

19. Wooden Animal Cutouts

You can use wooden animal cutouts for your toppers or ornaments and add a combination of synthetic and real dried leaves.

20. Two-Tone Jungle Cake

Again, there are ways to make your jungle cake unique and elegant even if you decided to use toys from the dollar store. How? Use modern decorating styles and two-tone frosting.

This cake, for example, has buttercream frosting in white and a very soft pistachio green. Spice it up with gold palm leaf, gold names, dried pampas grass, and colored chocolate balls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answer: Technically, jungle and safari are two different things. A jungle is a forest with densely overgrown trees and tangled vegetation, while a safari refers to a trip or excursion. In other words, a jungle is a place while a safari is more of an activity. But when it comes to party themes, you can apply either “jungle” or “safari” to refer to anything about animals in the wild like giraffes, lions, rhinos, elephants, tigers, monkeys, and more.

Answer: Jungle cake pricing depends on a lot of things. It would depend on the kind of cake you want, the flavor and the ingredients needed to make it, the frosting, the design, the size, and the decorative techniques and elements used. Cake prices also vary from baker to baker because of varying skill levels. If you want to have an idea of how much you need to set aside or allot for your cake budget, the best option is to call bakeshops and inquire. You can give them a picture or a description of the cake you want to order, they will suggest flavors based on their specialty, and they can give you an estimated price.

Answer: Jungle cakes are usually great for birthdays and even baby showers. Sometimes, the jungle theme is used for other celebrations, too, like Christening and even graduations. The theme is mostly used for kids since they’re usually the ones who are most fascinated with animals. Of course, I don’t mean to say that the theme doesn’t suit adults, because as long as you love animals and the wild, a jungle cake would still be a great idea.

Jungle-themed cakes have been around for as long as I can remember. So it’s safe to say that the jungle or safari theme never goes out of style. I think part of what makes the theme attractive is the fact that it’s more generic and you have more freedom to give it your own spin and your own interpretation. You don’t need to refer to a particular character or a specific color palette.

Jungle Animals Cake (A Safari Themed Cake)

Published: Oct 3, 2020 · Modified: Mar 13, 2024 by Priya Maha

Learn how to make jungle animals cake with this decorating guide. This 1st birthday cake was made in 3 tiers and decorated with cute handmade fondant animals including a little monkey literally swinging on a lovely 3D fondant tree topper.

Poster for a 3 tier jungle themed cake with fondant animal toppers.

I made this jungle animals cake for a 1-year old boy’s birthday. The party theme was centered around jungle animals and the mother requested me to design a cake to match the theme in green and yellow. So I made sure to have those 2 colors as the main ones on the cake. She also requested that the birthday boy is represented with a monkey topper!

👩‍🍳how to make, ❤️more tutorials you will love.

  • Cake – this was a 3 tier cake measuring 6 inches, 9 inches and 12 inches in diameter. And each tier was 4 inches high. I cannot recall the cake recipes I used for each of the tiers, but they were all from  my cake recipes collection here.
  • Buttercream  – Each tier of the cake was filled with buttercream. I also used buttercream to crumb coat each cake tier before covering them with fondant.
  • Fondant – I used  Satin Ice for the entire project. Some were ready to use colors namely pastel yellow, chocolate brown, yellow, orange, green, blue, white, pink, red and black. I also used food colors to tint white into navy blue (using  Americolor Navy Blue  ), light green (using  Americolor Avocado  ).
  • Shortening and  fondant glue  – I used these interchangeably, shortening for smaller lighter fondant pieces and the glue for heavier ones.
  • Gold Dust  and  lemon extract   – I mixed these to form edible gold paint for the crown on the monkey.
  • Green petal dust  - I used this to give more depth to the tree trunks on the cake.
  • Floral wire – These were to make the 3D trees on the cake, the monkey’s hands, legs and tail as well as the string on the balloon held by the elephant. I used  18 gauge  for the trunk (about 3 for the trunk and used thinner gauge wires for the branches. I joined these wires to the 18 gauge wires with brown floral tape). As for the monkey and the balloon, I used 24 gauge  .
  • Brown Floral Tape
  • Styrofoam balls  – these measured about 3 cm in diameter and were used as the base for 2of the animals, i.e., the elephant and lion.
  • Extruder tool  – I used this for the cake border as well as the vines, and borders for the plaques on the cake.
  • Plunger cutters in  oval  ,  round  ,  5 petal flowers  ,  star  and  hearts   – the oval ones were mainly for the leaves on the tree, round for the polka dots on the second tier, 5-petal flowers for the leaves base on the smaller tree, stars for the lion’s party hat and heart for the 2 Red hearts on the plaques.
  • Gerbera daisy petal cutter  – I used this to make the lion’s mane.
  • Clikstix Groovy Alphabet Cutters
  • Plaque cutters   – I used one for the birthday boy’s name and the other for the words, ‘Our Prince is 1’.
  • Scalloped round cutter set   – I used the smallest cutter for the larger 3D tree on the cake.
  • Pizza cutter  – this was a general cutting tool
  • Needle Tool  – This was mostly to mark the trunk grain pattern on the 3D tree trunks.
  • Sugar Craft Knife
  • Fondant shaping tools   – these were used to help in shaping the deco that was placed on the cake as well as the animals.

I started by preparing the animals toppers first. All of them were formed by hand. And I used one Styrofoam ball each as the base.

There are 2 reasons for using Styrofoam balls. Firstly, it saves on my fondant. Secondly, the animals set much faster. And are much lighter too. This was particularly important for the monkey topper as its entire weight was supported by its thin tail. Having a lighter weight makes a lot of difference.

I had a total of 4 animal toppers on this jungle animals cake – the monkey, giraffe, elephant, and lion. I did not capture step by step images of making these animals, but I do have the close-up pictures.

A fondant monkey hanging down a fondant tree on a cake.

Step 1: Make the Elephant Cake Topper

Mix the fondant - I started by mixing white and black to create the grey fondant. And then, using one Styrofoam ball as the base, I formed the elephant’s body.

Make the head - Next was the head. To make the head, I formed a large tear drop with the tip not so pointed. And then, I refined the tip to form the elephant trunk and the base of the tear drop as the face.  I used the end of my piping tip to imprint the elephant’s mouth and attached 2 small pink balls on each corner.

Make the eyes - For the eyes, I formed 2 white ovals, added 2 smaller dots of black and added thin eyelids made in grey on each eye.

3d fondant elephant with a string around its trunk.

Make the ears - This animal's ears were made in grey and pink. So were the hands and legs. All were formed by hand. I started by pinching out 2 equal-sized pieces of grey fondant, rolled each into equal-sized sausages, and then pressed one of each ends thin. I then used glue to attach the flattened part of the legs to the elephant’s body.

Make and attach the paws - For the animal's paws, I cut out small circles of pink and attached to the paws with shortening. The hands were formed in a similar manner too. And finally, I used my skewer to mark the elephant’s belly button!

Add the balloon - As for the balloon, I made it with fondant but the string holding it was floral wire. I poked one end of the wire into the balloon (I made the balloon in advance and let it set before putting it on wire as I did not want to risk the wire poking through the wet fondant of the balloon) and the formed a loop on the other end. Once the elephant was set and firm, I carefully inserted the loop through the elephant trunk.

Step 2: Make the Lion Cake Topper

Make the body and the face - This guy was pretty easy to make. I used orange and brown mostly, with a little bit of white and black for the eyes. I also used my gerbera daisy mold to make the mane.

Similar to the elephant, I used a small Styrofoam ball as the base. And then I formed the head and attached the lion’s eyes, nose, mouth and eye brows and one ear (the other ear was not necessary as the party hat was supposed to cover it).

Make and attach the legs - Next were the legs. Again, each one of these started off as sausage-shaped pieces. For the top legs, I formed the paws on one end and flattened the other ends thin by pressing them with my fingers.

Attach the paws - For the animal's paws, I used my sugar craft knife and cut 3 shallow lines to mark the lion’s paws. And the I attached the hands to the lion’s body. Next were the legs which were formed almost similar to the hands except that the opposite ends of the paws were not pressed thin. Instead, they were flattened and attached to the body with some glue. And for the paws, I added small round brown pieces.

Make the mane - For the mane, I used my smallest gerbera daisy cutter and made 3 pieces in brown. 1 piece went in between the body and the face while the other 2 pieces went to the back of the lion’s head.  I attached all with glue.

Make the party hat - Next was the animal's party hat in blue fondant. I shaped it into a cone and topped it with a tiny yellow ball. And then I added yellow stars all around it. And finally, I rolled a thin strip in green and attached it around the base of the blue cone with glue. I let the lion set firmly before attaching the party hat to it.

Add the tail - And finally, I added the lion’s long tail.

Step 3: Make the Giraffe Cake Topper

3D fondant giraffe with a bow, sitting on a cake.

Prepare the fondant - I used 5 colors for the giraffe namely yellow, light brown, chocolate brown, black and white. The body was made using white fondant tinted with Wilton golden yellow.

The brown dots on the giraffe were chocolate brown fondant that has been lightened with some white fondant. The giraffe’s horns and mane at the back of its neck were made using chocolate brown fondant.  The black was for the bow and eyes while the white also went of the eyes.

Form the body and head - To make the giraffe, I started off by rolling my fondant into a short fat sausage. And then I continued rolling one end to make it long and thin. This end was to form the neck and the other end was for the body.

Next was the head. I formed a round ball and then rolled it slightly to elongate it. And then I formed another small yellow ball, pressed it flat with my fingers and attached to the front of the face as the mouth. I used my skewer to mark the nostrils and the back of my piping tip to mark the mouth.

I formed the eyes in white and added black eyeballs to it. For the ears, I used my oval plunger cutter. I used my fingers to make one end of each eye pointy and pinched the other end so that they get folded slightly. I attached these to the head with glue.

Make and attach the horns - Next were the animal's horns. I rolled 2 equal sized thin brown pieces into thin sausages and attached them to the top of the giraffe’s head. To help the horns stay in place while the glue dries, I formed 2 small dents on the head with the end of my brush and attached the horns into these dents. That way, it was so much easier to keep them in place. Once they had become firm, I attached tiny brown ball on each horn, also with glue.

Add the legs and hooves - I left the head to set aside while I worked on the giraffe’s hands and legs. The steps I took to form these were similar to the elephant and lion above.

However, this time, since the legs were hanging from the side of the cake, when making the giraffe, I placed it on a piece of round Styrofoam and let the legs hang on its side while waiting for the giraffe to set and for the rest of the cake decoration to be ready.

Once the hands and legs were in place, I cut out small circles (in 2 different sizes) in brown. I attached them randomly on the body. I also attached the brown circles for the hooves.

Make the mane and bow - And then I added the head followed by the giraffe’s mane which I cut using the scalloped blade of my pizza cutter. I attached the mane using glue.

Next, I added a black bow around the animal's neck.  The bow was just a thin strip of black wrapped around the neck and another piece of the same sized black fondant that was formed into a bow.

3D fondant giraffe with a bow, sitting on a cake.

Step 4: Make the Monkey Cake Topper

This was the trickiest of all the 4 animals on this cake. And that was simply because this little guy was to hang onto a 3D tree branch by his tail.

The body had a Styrofoam ball as the base and the hands and legs were all wired. I formed them in fondant and slowly insert a thin wire through each arm and leg and then attached them to the body.

The tail was also wired. And I shaped it into a hook so that it will be easy to hang him up on his tail on the tree branch as well as easily take him off the tree. This was because I needed to take him off the tree when transporting the cake so that all the shaking during the drive does not detach his tail off the body.

The head was made entirely of fondant. And so was the crown (white painted in gold). The eyes, mouth, nose and ears were all made of fondant too.

Step 5: Make the Fondant Tree

I had 2 of these trees on the cake. The larger one on top of the cake as a topper and a slightly smaller one on the side of the 3 rd  cake tier. These trees were made using floral wire. If you see closer, you will notice that all the branches on each tree are wires.

I used thicker wire (18 gauge) for the trunk for more stability. For the branches, I used thinner wires (gauge 24). To join these thinner wire to the trunk, I used brown floral tape. I also used the tape to tape the branches that were coming out of the tree truck together.

Fondant tree on the side of a green cake.

For the wood grain pattern on the trunks, I used my needle tool and drew the pattern by hand. And then I dusted it with dark green petal dust.

As for the leaves, I cut out green pieces of round scalloped pieces (using the smallest cutter in my scalloped cutter set. I used my 5-petal flower plunger cutter for the smaller tree) and glued 2 pieces together randomly on the wire branches (with the wire branches sandwiched in between).

And then I used my oval plunger cutter for the leaves in a few different shades of green. I attached the leaves randomly on the scalloped pieces.

I also attached yellow flowers on the tree. These were made using my small flower plunger cutter.

Step 6: Bake the Cakes

Once all the cakes were baked and have cooled down, I leveled, filled and crumb coated them with buttercream. And then covered I them with fondant.

The first and third tiers were in green (Americolor Avocado food color mixed with white fondant) while the second tier was in pastel yellow. And then, I stacked them all up.

Step 7: Attach the Birthday Boy's Name

Next was the fun part i.e., the decoration. I started by putting up the birthday boy’s name and all other lettering on the cake. For the plaques on the second tier, I used plaque cutters. The wooden planks on the 3 rd  tier were strips of chocolate brown. I cut these by hand.

Once the lettering was all done and attached to the cake, I completed the second tier decorations by adding a white fondant ribbon all around the tier.

To frame the white plaques and the fondant ribbon around the cake, I used my extruder tool to pipe thin rolls of brown. I attached this as the border, with shortening. And then I finished off the second tier with green polka dots using my circle plunger cutter and green border (piped using the extruder tool).

Step 8: Attach the Trees to the Cake

For the third tier, I started by attaching the tree on the side first.  I used glue so that the tree would stick securely to the side of the cake as well as the cake board. And then I used my extruder tool to pipe the vines around the top edge of the cake. I piped these in brown and green.

And then I added the leaves in random order in a combination of green tones and yellow. I did the same for the top tier. I also added the leaves on the cake board.

Step 9: Attach the Grass Border

And finally, I added the grass borders for both tiers. I rolled and cut my green fondant into long strips and used the pizza cutter to form the grass.

Step 10: Add a Tiny Cake with Candle Topper

Next was the tiny birthday cake on the top tier. I made this by hand with light blue fondant shaped into a tiny cake. And then I added the white icing on top in white, followed by the handmade candle.

After the cake, I attached the larger tree on the first tier. Since the trunk consisted of a number of wires grouped together, it was convenient to use the extra wire at the base to hold the tree in place on the cake. I did not poke the entire group of wires into the cake. I only used 2 and cut off the rest.

And the two that went into the cake were inserted into lollipop sticks first so that there was no direct contact of the wires with the cake.

Step 11: Attach the Fondant Animal Toppers

And finally, I added the animals. I did this at the party venue which means I transported the cake and the animals separately.

All the animals were glued to the cake except for the monkey which was left hanging on the branch by its tail.

Jungle Safari Cake

October 31, 2022 by Roxy

safari themed first birthday cake

I made this Jungle Safari Cake a while ago for Daniel’s 1st birthday party. This post ends my series of posts about a Safari / Jungle Themed birthday party.  Here are all the other posts in case you missed them:

Part I – Dessert Ideas

Part II – Appetizers, Finger Foods & Snack Ideas

Part III – DIY Decoration Ideas + FREE Printables

Part IV – Cheap Party Supplies & Decorations

How to Make Safari / Jungle Animals Fondant Cupcake Toppers – Tiger, Zebra, Giraffe, Elephant, Monkey, Hippo, Bear, Lion

Teddy Bear Fondant Cake Topper

Ingredients

Walnut Cake:

For a 10.5 inch (26.7 cm) round pan:

  • 45 ml water (8 Tbsp)
  • 150 g flour
  • 240 g sugar
  • 4 Tbsp ground walnuts

Double the ingredients to make two 10-inch cakes.

For a 7 inch (17.7 cm) round pan:

  • 28 ml water (5 Tbsp)
  • 100 g flour
  • 150 g sugar
  • 2.5 Tbsp ground walnuts

Double the ingredients to make two 7-inch cakes.

Sugar Syrup to Moisten the Cake :

  • 400 ml water
  • 10 Tbsp sugar
  • 6 Tbsp rum extract

Whipped Chocolate Ganache Filling :

  • 600 g dark chocolate (baking or couverture chocolate)
  • 1.2 l whipping cream
  • 200 g ground walnuts

Covering the Cake:

  • 5 lbs green fondant ( 2.3 kg)
  • 1 lb white fondant + yellow, orange, brown, dark green and black gel food colouring for the fondant decorations; or you can buy fondant already coloured in those colours

Other Tools/Items:

  • 10 inch & 7 inch cake boards
  • 4 Boba plastic straws or cake dowels
  • Leaf fondant cutter
  • Flower plunger cutter
  • Tree bark fondant impression mat
  • Upper Case Funky Alphabet and Number Tappit Cutters
  • Lower Case Funky Alphabet Tappit Cutters Set
  • Set of 3 Sugar Paste Narrow Leaf Cutters
  • 1.5’’ flower cookie cutter
  • 1’’ circle cutter
  • 1 Wilton/Ateco round decorating tip #8
  • A small paint brush

Making the Cake

Use the ingredients listed above and follow the step-by-step instructions in this other post to make your 4 cakes.

Bake the cakes, let them cool off and cut each of them horizontally in two.

Make your sugar syrup by boiling the water with the sugar and adding the vanilla extract at the end. Let it cool off.

Making the Filling

Make the whipped chocolate ganache following the steps in this recipe. Make this at least a 8 hours before you are ready to assemble the cake as it needs to cool off in the fridge before whipping it.

Set aside 200 g of the whipped ganache to crumb coat the cake before covering it with fondant.

Then, add the ground walnuts to the remaining whipped ganache and fold them in with a spatula.

Assembling and Decorating the Cake

Assembling the cake.

Spread some filling on your 10’’ cake board and place the first cake layer on top. Moisten it with sugar syrup and spread whipped chocolate ganache filling on top (~300 g of ganache per layer). Repeat the steps for the 2nd and 3rd cake layers. Lastly, place the 4th cake layer on top and moisten it with sugar syrup.

safari themed first birthday cake

Repeat the steps for the 7’’ cake. You should spread ~ 200g whipped ganache per cake layer.

safari themed first birthday cake

Crumb coat the cakes with a thin layer of the ganache you saved. Refrigerate them for 1-2 hours.

Covering the Cakes with Fondant

Knead and roll 2/3 of your green fondant to cover the 10’’ inch cake.

Before rolling out your fondant, sprinkle some powdered sugar or cornstarch on your work surface and knead it until it has a workable consistency and it doesn’t feel and look dry.

safari themed first birthday cake

Use a measuring tape or a piece of string to measure the top and sides of the cake. So if you measured 10’’ across the top and your cake is 4’’ tall that is 18’’ of cake in total so you need to roll out the fondant at least 20 inches in diameter but you should leave an inch or two extra.  Sprinkle some powdered sugar onto your work surface and roll out the green fondant in the approximate shape of your cake (i.e. circle for a round cake). As you are rolling it make sure you lift the fondant occasionally and rotate it 45 degrees to make sure it doesn’t stick to your work surface. If it sticks lift the fondant and sprinkle more powdered sugar or cornstarch.

Gently lift fondant over rolling pin and place it on the side of the cake. Start unrolling the fondant from the side of the cake and across the top to the other side.

safari themed first birthday cake

Smooth the fondant with a fondant smoother (or the palm of your hand) starting from the top.  Start to gently pull the fondant out and down around the sides of the cake using one hand and spread the excess fondant and smooth it out using a fondant smoother (or your other hand).

Keep turning the cake and repeating these steps until the sides are smooth and without any ruffles formed towards the bottom. It’s better if you use a fondant smoother since the pressure of your hands could leave marks and the warmth from your hands might make the fondant sticky.

Use your fondant smoother to get rid of any wrinkles and air bubbles as well.  If you see any air bubbles, insert a pin on an angle, release the air and smooth the area again.

Trim the edges at the bottom using an X-Acto knife , a pizza cutter or any other sharp knife you have.

safari themed first birthday cake

Repeat the same steps to cover the 7’’ cake and place it on the 7’’ cake board.

safari themed first birthday cake

Cut 4 boba straws or cake dowels to the height of the 10’’ cake and insert them into the cake.

safari themed first birthday cake

Spread another bit of frosting on top and place the 7’’ cake on top.

Making the Fondant Decorations

Sprinkle some powdered sugar or cornstarch on your work surface and roll out the brown fondant. Gently press the tree bark fondant impression mat onto the fondant to give it the wood effect.

safari themed first birthday cake

Cut a 3.5’’ x 4.5’’ square to make the wooden sign post. Then, cut a thin 1’’ x 6’’ strip to make the post. Lastly, cut two thin strips for the top and bottom edges of the sign.

safari themed first birthday cake

Assemble the sign post by using a bit of water to glue everything together.

safari themed first birthday cake

Use the tappit cutter to make the number 1 and attach it to your sign.

safari themed first birthday cake

Make the leaves for the palm trees using the leaf cutters and the dark green fondant. Then, for the tree trunk, roll a log out of brown fondant and make some indentations using the back of a knife blade or the blunt knife fondant tool.

safari themed first birthday cake

Make the elephant, giraffe and lion as shown in the pictures below.

safari themed first birthday cake

Attach all the fondant decorations to the cake using some water.

safari themed first birthday cake

Use the Upper Case Tappit Cutters and Lower Case Funky Alphabet Tappit Cutters to make the letters of your kid’s name out of yellow fondant. Use the flower plunger cutter to make the small flowers out of white fondant.

Paint the bear paws on the cake using brown food colouring mixed with a few drops of vodka or water.

I made a 5’’ Smash Cake following the same recipes and steps above. You just need to reduce the ingredients – e.g. make each cake out of 4 eggs, use about 300 g of whipped ganache filling.

For this safari theme, use various shades of brown, green, and orange, or any other color you might find in the wild. You can also get balloons shaped like typical safari animals to incorporate. Details like this will help bring the wild theme to life!

Pro tip: Hire an event planner through The Bash that is an expert in assembling unique balloon arrangements.

Stuffed Animals

Stuffed animals safari themed birthday party idea

The key for any event decor is to make use of things you might already have. Incorporate your child's stuffed animals throughout the space to capture the safari theme. Find jumbo size plush animals including tigers, giraffes, and elephants that everyone will want to get a picture with.

Tableware safari themed birthday party idea

One of the best places to incorporate themed decor for an outdoor party is on the tables. Whether you decide on multiple small tables or one large one, incorporate animal inspired tableware for guests to use. Shop animal print utensils , napkins, and tablecloths that will make the celebration pop.

For this safari, you can also use details like vines, pampas grass, and compasses for a wild dining experience.

Tents safari themed birthday party idea

Any experienced explorer most likely spends the majority of their time in a tent. Play into the safari theme by setting up tents in the outdoor space for a backdrop. Arrange a few blankets, pillows, and small activities like coloring books that will help keep everyone entertained.

Safari Theme Party Food and Drinks

Make sure there is plenty of fuel for the explorers at the safari themed birthday party.

Safari Themed Birthday Cake

You’re going to want to incorporate the safari theme into every party detail, including the cake. Place an order from your favorite bakery ahead of time to ensure there will be plenty of sugary animals, fake vines, and other wild accents on the birthday cake.

Dinosaur Chicken Nuggets

Dinosaur chicken nuggets safari themed birthday party idea

Who says dinosaurs can’t be invited to the safari party? Chicken nuggets are one of the most loved kid’s foods that are easy to make because all you have to do is pop them in the oven! Serve with different sauces, french fries, and maybe some broccoli trees.

Trail mix safari themed birthday party idea

It’s important that a safari explorer keeps plenty of snacks on hand that are easy to travel with, for example, trail mix. Make your own by purchasing a variety of nuts, dried fruit, and small candies. You can also set up a trail mix bar including separate ingredients so guests can make their own take home bag.

Mud cups safari themed birthday party idea

This dessert is a delicious DIY treat! All you’ll need to do is add crushed Oreos, gummy worms, and candy rocks on the top of a pudding cup to look like mud. If you don’t prepare these beforehand, kids will love decorating and customizing their own.

Ants on a Log

Ants on a log safari themed birthday party idea

One of the best snacks for kids usually incorporates them being hiddenly healthy. Make a childhood classic of ants on a log that will help fuel the little explorers during the safari themed birthday party. All this classic entails is spreading peanut butter on a celery stick, and topping with raisins. This snack is easy to customize because you can easily swap the peanut butter with hummus in case of any allergies.

“Jungle Juice”

Jungle juice safari themed birthday party idea

Whip up a big batch of kid-friendly jungle juice to quench everyone’s thirst. Add any ingredients you want; fruit juice, Gatorade, fresh juice, soda, the possibilities are endless. Serve in a beverage dispenser with a spout so kids will be able to easily refill their canteens. For an adults only drink, try adding champagne for a delicious and fruity mimosa.

Once the face painter turns the kids into their favorite animals, give them ears to match. Visit your local party store or place an online order for lion ears, tigers, giraffes, and more. Try to stock up on a variety so everyone can choose what animal they want to be.

1st Birthday Safari Theme Party: Wild One

Turning one year old is wild! That’s why “Wild One” is such a popular first birthday party theme. You can easily incorporate these same safari ideas into this milestone occasion, but you’re not going to want to forget these details.

Wild one smash cake safari themed birthday party idea

If you’ve seen kiddos go wild and destroy their gorgeous birthday cake, that’s exactly why smash cakes have become popular. Smash cakes are typically a smaller, homemade cake specially made for the guest of honor. After the proud parents help blow out the candle, let the one year old celebrate their special day with their own cake. It’s completely up to them if they play with it or eat it, but this way it saves plenty of birthday cake for the other guests to enjoy.

Photographer

Photographer safari themed birthday party idea

A first birthday only happens once, so you’re going to want to remember it forever. Hire a photographer to capture every detail: the decor, the cake, and of course all the smiling faces in attendance! Miss no photo opportunity with our helpful 1st birthday picture list for ideas.

Photo Backdrop

Photo backdrop safari themed birthday party idea

You’re only going to be able to host a “wild one” themed birthday for your baby once, so make a photo backdrop for plenty of pictures. Create your own using a safari background, plush animals, and a big metallic “1” balloon. This backdrop will also act as a focal point in the party space.

Adult Safari Jungle Cakes

For adults, it’s all about sophistication with a wild twist. Think animal patterns, like zebra stripes or leopard spots, on your cake. Here are some tips and ideas for adding that adult sophistication to your safari cakes:

safari jungle cake ideas and tutorials - Gold safari jungle birthday cake

Gold Safari Theme Birthday Cake

De le crème studio does this perfectly with their gold zebra and giraffe print cake painting in the this picture. They even have a template that you can use to replicate it, for those of you that are nervous to go free hand. I say just go for it! But start painting from the back of the cake and make those first errors there, or draw the lines on first with a pencil.

Tips For Painting on Your Cakes.

  • Cover your cake with fondant and let it set to avoid dents while painting or adding decorations.
  • Use dusting colours and lustres with a brush and rejuvenator spirit for a smooth application that leaves no wetness behind. You can also use edible pens if you like, I love working with fractal colours as they don’t dry out fast like other edible pens and I’ve had some of mine for over a year.
  • When painting leopard spots always start with light colours and layer on the darker shades for a bold effect.

Making Animal Print Fondant

You can add the animal patterns to the cake in fondant which would create more texture depending on the detail of the design this could take a little longer, so go for larger shapes that take up a larger area of the cake. The cake below by cakechefis is a great example of this.

safari jungle cakes and ideas with animal print fondant tips /

Lastly you can an animal print, printed onto edible icing sheet paper and wrap it around the cake. I love the way this has been done by Marias Sweet Cakery on the middle cake and then green and gold! It’s creating a striking boho feel safari cake.

How to Make Fondant Tropical Jungle Leaves Step by Step – With No Cutters

Ok, let’s get started! These tropical leaves are super easy to make. You’ll need fondant, green gel/paste colour (I like gooseberry and foliage green Sugarflair), and a craft knife from your basic tool set. You can purchase the set [Link to purchase]. If you don’t have a small circle cutter, a small pea size end piping nozzle will work.

Mix your fondant green tones, roll into a crease-free ball, then shape it into a cone. You can learn these steps and more in my beginner modelling tutorials for free [Link to tutorials]. Flatten the cone with a rolling pin, then use the craft knife to cut in the leaf edges. Use the circle cutter (or piping nozzle) to punch out the holes. Dive into the video; it’s super easy, and you’re going to love it!

12 Cool DIY Safari and Jungle Cake Ideas

Coolest Safari and Jungle Cake Ideas and Photos

This is the jungle cake I made for my son’s first birthday party. I got the design from the Whimsical Bake house cookbook and also used their recipes. It was all chocolate cake with cookies and cream filling.

The filling was the best part – it’s just sweetened whipped cream with crushed up oreo’s in it – delicious! I also made a tiny 6-inch smash cake for my son and it was a huge success – I will continue to make a separate small cake for him until he’s a bit older.

Safari Jungle Cake

The animals on the jungle cake are made out of melting chocolate (or candy discs) colored with candy colors. They took a really long time to make but making them about 7 weeks before the party really cut down on the prep time. Make sure if you try the candy decorations that you pipe them really thick – some of mine were so thin that when I pulled them off of the waxed paper they bent or cracked.

We used a recipe out of the 2007 Wilton Yearbook for our jungle cake. We made the palm trees out of pretzel rods and construction paper, the “water” out of blue gel icing and brown sugar for the “sand”. It was a big hit at the party everyone loved it!

For my son’s 3rd birthday we had an animal jungle/zoo theme. We used Zoo Pals plates and cutlery made a Jungle cake and Zoo juice boxes. All other decorations we animal themed and each child had a different animal box filled with zoo themed goodies to take home.

The Jungle cake is just a plain white cake with vanilla frosting dyed green. The water is blue decorating gel and the dirt is crumbled digestive biscuits. Pretzel sticks make up the fence and Lego and Fisher Price animals are the decorations. What an easy way to make children smile.

The elephant & tiger for this jungle cake is one cake mix split into 2 round pans. The tiger ears are cupcakes. The trunk is the part cut out between the ears.

The jungle cake is iced with store icing tinted with gel. The elephant is decorated with rope licorice. The monkey ears are cookie crisp cereal. The frog’s eyes are mini marshmallows moistened by rolling on a wet paper towel and then rolling in green sugar and add a dot of black icing. A five year old helped me do the eyes and ears!

Safari Jungle Cake

My son wanted a jungle cake for his 5th Birthday I made two round chocolate cakes. Once they were cool I cut one cake in a smaller circle than the other and placed it on top of the bigger cake (tiered).

I made butter icing and tinted it green. I then iced the whole jungle cake green and then piped stars around the bottom of both cakes. I gathered up several jungle animals (I washed them in hot water and dried them) and placed them around the cake. I then used jelly snakes and a large jelly python and placed them around the cakes. I made banana trees with a Kit-Kat piece placed vertically and then three lolly banana were placed at the top of the Kite-Kat to form branches. I also placed Smarties here and there to fill in the jungle cake.

My son just loved it! I got lots of comments at his party everyone was very impressed.

My Daughter was going through a Tarzan/Dumbo phase and she wanted animals for her 3rd B-Day. I kept looking at other pictures of cakes and finally decided to come up with my own idea; I created a jungle cake. I used fondant for the covering, I dyed the fondant the colors that I wanted. I used a tier set for the top cake and used white icing colored green for the grass around the cake., , I was so worried that it wasn’t going to come out the way that I wanted but I think that it came out better.

Safari Jungle Cake

I made the candy following the recipe and instructions from The Whimsical Bakehouse cookbook. I used chocolate cake and cookies-n-cream filling for one cake and a vanilla cake with custard and strawberries for the other layer. It was a lot of work to have so many colors but I made the candy about a month ahead of time so that helped.

A teacher at my son’s school wanted a simple animal theme cake for her 2 year-old boy. The animals are toys, and I decided to make a scene for them: hippo in the water, lion behind the bush, and giraffe under the tree. The other animals went around the cake.

The animals of this jungle cake are made out of “Candy Clay”. It’s just white chocolate and corn syrup. The borders are made out of fondant.

I cut the letter out with letter cookie cutters. The top 2 tiers are chocolate cake and the bottom is a white cake. The frosting is butter cream. It was a huge hit and my 3-year-old twins loved it!

Safari Jungle Cake

This jungle cake was a Neapolitan cake. The top layer was white cake and the second was strawberry. Chocolate frosting was in the center. I mixed green food coloring gel into white frosting for the grass and blue for the water. The edges were frosted with green, blue and purple. Little jungle animals finished off the scene.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Donald Trump marked his 78th birthday on Friday night by addressing a fawning crowd in Florida and repeatedly dismissing his opponent in November’s election, 81-year-old President Joe Biden , as too frail to handle a second term.

“Our country is being destroyed by incompetent people,” said Trump, who devoted large swathes of a jovial speech to poking fun at Biden. “All presidents should have aptitude tests.”

The former president addressed “Club 47” fan club members at a convention center in West Palm Beach, a short drive from the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence. As part of the festivities, organizers brought out a towering, multi-layered cake as audience members tossed red and blue balloons.

Setting on a gold-colored base, the cake featured separate tiers that included a “Make America Great Again” baseball cap and the Club 47 logo, an American flag, the phrase “Born in the USA on Flag Day,” a depiction of Trump golfing and the Oval Office fitted gold frames common in many Trump properties as well as Trump and Republican logos.

When Trump took the stage, the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” and chanted “USA! USA!” The layer cake was just for show. But backstage, there was a sheet cake with vanilla icing that was served to some members of the presumptive Republican nominee’s campaign staff.

The event in Trump’s adopted home state sold out of 5,000 tickets at about $35 apiece, with closer spots to the stage costing $60, according to Club 47 President Larry Snowden.

“This is the biggest birthday party I’ve ever had by far,” Trump said.

The former president elicited strong cheers by listing his now-familiar campaign plans, including discussing immigration in menacing terms and pledging to reduce regulations, scrap environmental protections to stimulate domestic energy production and cut taxes.

Despite so often scoffing at Biden, even declaring that the president often “doesn’t know where the hell he is,” Trump also offered a seemingly contradictory message to his own supporters. He endorsed early voting, casting ballots by mail and also on Election Day in person, only to later note: “I actually tell our people, we don’t need your vote. We’ve got so many votes.”

Before Trump took the stage, Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Byron Donalds, both Florida Republicans, helped warm up the crowd, gushing about Trump and his prospects for winning back the White House.

It was yet another strong show of support for Trump and came a day after Republicans in Congress sang their own rendition of “Happy Birthday” and presented the former president with a cake and gifts during a Thursday visit to Capitol Hill — displaying remarkable loyalty for a former president who was shunned by many of the same lawmakers after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot .

Even after becoming the first former president to have been convicted of a felony , Trump has tightened his grip on much of his party’s base and elected officials. Next month, he is scheduled to accept his party’s presidential nomination for the third time — despite facing sentencing in his hush money case on July 11.

Trump referenced his conviction on 34 felony counts on Friday, declaring, “In the end, they’re not after me. They’re after you and I just happened to be standing in their way.”

Mary Lou and Sue Reardon both came to the event from the Villages near Ocala, about 240 miles (386 kilometers) northwest of West Palm Beach. Both were wearing U.S. flag shirts and matching “Birthday” headbands with candles.

“We just feel like he’s our last hope,” Sue Reardon said of Trump.

Biden will turn 82 shortly after Election Day in November. His campaign marked Trump’s birthday by compiling a listing of “78 of Trump’s historic… ‘accomplishments,’” with links to media coverage of policy proposals including “cutting Social Security and Medicare,” Trump’s presidency during GOP losses in the U.S. House and Senate and several references to his legal cases.

“On behalf of America, our early gift for your 79th: Making sure you are never President again,” Biden campaign spokesperson James Singer added to the birthday wishes.

By contrast, there was no hint of GOP disunity when Trump was in Washington to meet with House and Senate Republicans on Thursday, in his first visit to Capitol Hill since the riot, which was carried out by Trump supporters seeking to overturn his 2020 loss to Biden.

Among those attending was Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who endorsed Trump earlier this year despite not having spoken since 2020.

Club 47 is based in Palm Beach County and says on its website that the club’s goal is to keep Trump’s supporters “in our area connected and engaged.” Trump most recently spoke to the club in October, days after the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel.

Lydia Maldonado, a local Hispanic activist, said Friday’s event is unique compared to any rally nationwide with the former president and that Trump feels comfortable and familiar with this crowd since it’s his hometown.

“The purpose of having this event is pretty much to let him know how much the community here loves him and how much the community supports him,” Maldonado said.

Associated Press writers Jill Colvin in Washington and Meg Kinnard in Columbia, South Carolina, contributed to this report.
