Daystate Redwolf Safari .30 Full Field Review

safari and outdoor air rifles

Early this year Daystate released the top tier Safari line of high powered PCP rifles. The Safari model is similar to the standard Redwolf but has upgraded electronics as well as a one of a kind Italian produced stock. Beyond the stunning looks the rifles performance has been enhanced by the ART polygonal LW barrels.

safari and outdoor air rifles

DESCRIPTION

A bold challenge by Daystate that the new Red Wolf Safari high performance air rifle meets with ease. The new Daystate Safari GC2 power plant provides a massive power upgrade and faster speed of the action’s cycling rate. Each Safari has three individual power settings that can be selected by the shooter in seconds to satisfy any target or hunting requirements. The Red Wolf Safari’s LCD screen displays the state of air pressure in tenths of a bar, shot count, total shots fired, magazine counter and more. The heart of the water proof computer controlled system is the electronic MCT. This firing valve takes pressure readings from the carbon fiber air supply and relays to the system the air pulse required in order to give the maximum shots per fill for tight shot-to-shot consistency and bench rest winning accuracy.

The new Daystate A.R.T. barrel on each of the Safari rifles has been developed and tested to provide the best long range accuracy from an air rifle. This new barrel technology is the result of hundreds of hours in testing many different design specifications such as choke, spin rate, profile, lead in, ballistic coefficients etc. The large capacity battery powering the unit is conveniently stored in the grip for easy access and provides thousands of shots before a recharge is required from the included charger. There is no finer trigger on a sporting air rifle than the fully tune-able match unit on the Red Wolf Safari. The trigger can be set to break on a breath or set for sporting applications as needed. The action of the Red Wolf Safari features a left or right hand reversible, super glide side lever that requires almost no effort. The action is fast and positive and the new GC2 (or gun control unit) can provide the power required for speed competitions or a lighting fast follow up shot in the field. The Red Wolf Safari has a 10-shot magazine or can be used with the included single shot tray. The carbon fiber shroud system reduces muzzle report with minimal weight and adds to the impressive appearance of the air rifle. Each Red Wolf Safari is nestled into a unique Italian produced stock. This beautiful stock has a patented finish applied that is extremely rugged. The weather resistant process requires hours of hand labor resulting in a non slip surface that is durable and elegant. The stock has been crafted with a thumb up or around position and fine stippling on the grip areas. A soft touch adjustable cheek piece and three way adjustable butt pad complete the Safaris attention to detail. A five year transferable warranty comes standard. The Daystate Safari represents the absolute pinnacle in airgun accuracy, technology, performance and quality!

*The Red Wolf Safari can be further tuned with an optional Daystate programmer within the rifles limits. This feature is not for the novice as it allows each power level program to be manipulated to achieve the best speed and accuracy for a given pellet out of each individual rifle. A specialized Accuracy Research Team or A.R.T. tune is available as an optional upgrade this highly advanced custom work is performed by a specialist A.R.T member with many hours spent in shooting each rifle with software customizing and barrel conditioning. The A.R.T. tune is NOT required for match winning performance it is only for those desiring to squeeze every ounce of accuracy out of each individual rifle. Daystate has included the default program if the user wants to return to the factory settings.

Airguns Of Arizona sent the Daystate Safari and sponsored us to get out and bring this review to you. My first impression of the Safari was WOW, what a gorgeous rifle. The stock on the Safari is unlike anything I’ve ever seen on any PCP rifle.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The grain on the ambidextrous stock looks very similar to barnwood but with a much smoother texture. The process to produce these stocks is very unique and very much a secret to Daystate. I looked at the 24″ LW Polygonal barrel that’s carbon fiber sleeved for stiffness, very well done.

safari and outdoor air rifles

At the end of the barrel is a cap that hides the 1/2″ UNF threading for mounting a wide variety of moderators. My experience with the Polygonal barrels is they shoot both slugs and pellets very accurately. The Safari has a 480cc bottle that can be filled to 250 bar and and in .30 caliber should yield about 30 good shots on high power.

safari and outdoor air rifles

Moving back the Safari has a beautifully crafted sidelever that opens and closes very smooth thanks to the electronic firing system. The electronic guns have no spring that usually associated with firing the hammer to open the valve. The sidelever is also fitted with a small magnet that keeps it held closed and free from noise when walking around. The sidelever can be moved to the other side easily for left handed shooters.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The breech itself has a very nice finish as well as 11mm dovetail for mounting optics. I have mounted the Aztec Emerald 5.5-25×50 ffp side focus scope that works very well for hunting and is more than adequate for most target shooting applications.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The .30 caliber Safari comes with one 5 shot self indexing magazine, this magazine loads very easy and has a magnet that holds it snugly in place.

safari and outdoor air rifles

Out back of the receiver is the manual crossbar safety that can easily be used with thumb, very comfortable and easy to use. This safety is also used to wake the electronics from sleep mode, more on this later.

safari and outdoor air rifles

Moving down to the trigger we have a fully adjustable match grade trigger, one of the best I have seen. The trigger shoe can be fully adjusted as well to fit well to anyone’s shooting style.

safari and outdoor air rifles

On the left side of the rifle is an LCD display that will tell us the fill pressure and power level the rifle is set to. With the LCD we can check the health of the rifle as well as to easily tune the power level to suit various performance needs.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The fill port is located just under the rifle standard to all Daystate models as well as having a very nice magnetic dust cap.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The beautiful Italian made Safari stock has and adjustable comb cheek riser to further fine tune the rifle to it’s user. The fit and finish is astounding and the riser has a wonderful rubberized texture that feels nice when shouldered. The butpad is fully adjustable as well but found it to be just fine for my own preference. Just underneath the grip area of the stock is a small door that houses the battery to power the electronics of the Safari.

safari and outdoor air rifles

With a flat blade screwdriver the door can be opened to charge the battery with the included charger.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The wires have very little slack so it’s important to be careful with the wires, somewhat delicate connectors.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The battery should give well over 1000 shots to the gun on a full charge. To charge the battery fully takes about 45 minutes, I like to top it off before any major outing. The charger will have three lights that will turn blue when battery is fully charged, if the battery is low these lights will be red.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The Safari comes with a detailed manual that explicitly shows the charging process as well as all the rifles electronic adjustments. The Safari has 3 power levels that can easily be changed by the user and is explained in the users manual or in the video portion of this review.

The following day I loaded up the Safari and headed for the mountains to test the Safari at various ranges, and to set it up for several days of hunting.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The LW Polygonal barrels from my experience shoot both pellets and slugs very well so wanted to use my time to test both. I brought a variety of Nielsen Specialty Ammo slugs to test at long range as I felt the Safari was a worthy candidate to shoot them. The weather was very cold and windy and did not make for the best shooting conditions, I figured I would use the wind to my advantage. When testing I have found sometime wind can be a good thing, great way to practice. I set a target out at 162 yards and proceeded to shoot both pellets and slugs. After my first few shots I immediately fell in love with the trigger on the Safari, simply perfect for target shooting.

safari and outdoor air rifles

At these ranges I was not correcting for wind, I wanted to see the drift of both pellets and slugs. The goal was to find something with low wind drift. The 47 and 49gr NSA’s both shot very well, the 49’s being a bit heavier seemed to be my best choice for hunting.

safari and outdoor air rifles

I then put out a new target and tried the same thing with the 50.15gr JSB’s, the pellets drifted much more and were less predictable.

safari and outdoor air rifles

I now moved the targets into 100 yards and now tried to correct for the wind and to zero in the rifle producing some very good results with both pellets and slugs.

safari and outdoor air rifles

Nielsen Specialty Ammo 49gr HP 5 shots@100 yards

The Safari is a ridiculously accurate gun, the key is to keep the Polygonal barrel clean. Many standard LW barrels shoot very well but the Polygonal needs to be cleaned much more frequently from my experience.  By this time the weather was getting very poor but I was not done as I wanted to see how the Safari performed at some extreme long range. Marley and I moved the Jeep to another spot that offered a better view for long range shots.

safari and outdoor air rifles

I set out a Gatorade bottle at 208 yards and wanted to see how consistently I could hit it. With my first failed shot I was able to correct enough for wind to connect with the bottle using the 49gr NSA slugs .

safari and outdoor air rifles

When shooting long range it’s important to find where you run out of scope adjustments. For extreme long range adjustable mounts are needed otherwise we will run out of elevation or be limited to lower magnification. My conclusion is the Safari in .30 shoots consistently and accurately out to 150 yards with ease. I was impressed with the Safari’s long range capability and I think with some different mounts the rifle is certainly capable of more. The weather was giving me the hint to pack up so before the snow we made our way back home. I was happy to get out and test the Safari and looked forward to getting it into the field for some hunting.

The area I had decided to camp had just received a good amount of rain and snow so getting there was somewhat of a task. The road going into the area was pretty awful to say the least, the Jeep mashed through it like a champ though. Most of the way to my spot was covered in snow, a beautiful winter wonderland. I drove to several spots before I settled in and decided where I would camp, definitely a change of scenery from a hot and dry desert. I found a spot that had a dry patch that was surrounded by Joshua Trees, really cool area.

safari and outdoor air rifles

Lindsey said I was completely crazy for wanting to “tent” camp in such cold weather, something I don’t often do. One of the things I enjoy about doing field reviews is sometimes it forces me to get out of my comfort zone. The plan was to arrive early to film some time lapse footage and to find a good location to camp. With the recent storm I had expected little to no animal activity but was hopeful to try bringing in some Coyotes.  As the Safari’s firing system is electronic, cold weather and “electronics” don’t mix well from my experience. I figured this trip may be the ultimate test of the rifles “real world” durability and field use. Beyond hunting I wanted to film some survival type things to be used for another project.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The high of the day was 34 degrees with a low of 19 at night. Brrrrrrrr to the bone!

safari and outdoor air rifles

I filmed most everything and will enclose the review in video form at the bottom. After setting up camp Marley and I made way North to set out a caller. One thing very important to note about the Safari is it’s “sleep mode”. After 5 minutes the Safari’s electronics will shut down and can be”woke up” by turning the safety off. Sometimes when hunting I will not have the safe on, in this case the rifle will go into sleep mode and we forget. When the opportunity arises to take a shot we raise the gun, aim and pull the trigger only to find nothing happens. This happened to me and was frustrating, was my fault for having a bad habit. To solve this problem in simple I had to learn and remember to put safe on after taking a shot. Basically I needed to be in the habit of using the safety, something I should have  been doing anyways.

safari and outdoor air rifles

Marley flushed one Jack that was buried under the snow, they lay under the sagebrush with ears back. The snow falls and covers the brush almost like an igloo. I set up a caller and we concealed ourselves between some large Joshua Trees, this area looked like a good vantage point.

safari and outdoor air rifles

I ran the caller for a few minutes using Mouse Squeaker that has worked for me several times. Within about 5 minutes I spotted a large Coyote at about 145 yards, he finally made way over the hill and came into about 100 before stopping just behind a Joshua Tree. I had a great shot lined up but he quickly spooked down to the left out of sight. Tried the caller again but it never returned….uggggg/ was happy I at least called one in. By this time it was late afternoon so we headed back to camp to make a fire and get some grub, made some mac&cheese lol Dinner for the lazy as I call it.

safari and outdoor air rifles

It was nice to have a fire and enjoy the dead winter silence, well worth the trip just for that. That night was cold as predicted but we managed well with plenty of blankets. (Note) Bring extra socks!!! The following morning the sun did come out and brought enough to start melting the snow fairly quick.

safari and outdoor air rifles

Marley and I headed away from camp through the forest of Joshua Trees where I spotted several fresh Jackrabbit tracks as well as the yellow tinge in the snow. The Aztec Emerald 5.5-25×50 FFP scope works very well for hunting, I like keeping the scope set to 5.5 magnification when walking around. Staying at lower magnification gives a nice wide field of view and makes finding the target much easier.

safari and outdoor air rifles

We made our way to the edge of the forest where I spotted a fair sized Jackrabbit at just over 130 yards, made a great headshot that took it down clean. THWAAACK!!!

safari and outdoor air rifles

Marley sprinted out to recover and was excited as can be with her first kill of the trip. Thankfully I captured everything on both my large camera and Tactacam 5.0 with FTS mount.

safari and outdoor air rifles

I was so happy to have some success, really did feel like an adventure and was well worth a cold night. The Safari is a powerhouse of a rifle and gets out to range very well with pinpoint accuracy. After this trip I plan to do more cold weather camping, was very pleasant. Enclosed are my final honest thoughts of this rifle that I hope may help those thinking to purchase. I want to thank Airguns Of Arizona for outfitting me with this rifle and sponsoring Marley and I to get out and review it.

There are a variety of types of air rifles that are available today. These each offer different power levels and accuracy, and therefore, certain types of air rifles are often preferred for different uses or applications.

The main types of air rifles that are available today include:

Pre-charged Pneumatic (PCP) Air Rifles

Pre-charge pneumatic air rifles have been trusted since the days of Lewis and Clark to offer superior accuracy and ease of shooting. These rifles are just recently becoming more affordable for the mass market with the development and advance of current technology. PCP air rifles work by first pre-charging the gun by using either a hand pump or a scuba tank. These air rifles can shoot accurate shots up to 50 yards and beyond and are perfect for hunting, casual shooting, and competition shooting.

Break Barrel Air Rifles

In the last few years, there has been a shift in the types of air rifles that are widely used for hunting and pest control purposes due to recent advances in technology. As a result, break barrel or break action style air rifles are becoming more popular than ever before for these purposes. A traditional break action air rifle is powered by moving a piston located in the receiver to the rear as a hinged barrel is pulled downward. The piston then moves to the rear against a strong steel spring, where it is locked into position. Many break action rifles are relatively powerful, launching pellets at velocities of 1000 feet per second or more.

A downside to break barrel air rifles is the fact that these are often difficult to shoot accurately because of the force of the heavy piston lurching forward. New Nitro Piston technology uses a nitrogen filled gas piston rather than a traditional coiled spring to reduce overall recoil and improve precision and accuracy in these air rifles. Additionally, this technology results in air rifles that are quicker, quieter, and easier to fire.

CO2 Powered Air Rifles

CO2 powered air rifles are powered by small containers of highly pressurized and liquefied gas. These air rifles are convenient because a small cartridge can provide power for a large number of shots without the need for pumping in between shots. CO2 powered air rifles tend to have slightly lower pellet velocities, but they can typically be versatile enough for most air gun uses.

Variable Pump Air Rifles

Variable pump and multi pump air rifles are designed to allow multiple pumps to be used to force air into a chamber where it is then stored under pressure. Each pump when using a variable pump air rifle will increase the pressure and power of the rifle. Variable pump air rifles can be manufactured to offer a variety of pellet velocities. These air rifles offer outstanding performance, excellent accuracy and can be used for target shooting as well as for pest control or hunting small game.

Developed as a civilian alternative to the military M14 rifle, Springfield Armory’s M1A has been around since 1974. In fact, Springfield Armory just celebrated the 50-year milestone of the M1A’s release with a limited-edition 50th Anniversary model , just as I was wrapping up testing for the air-powered replica version of this iconic rifle. The air version of the M1A is an underlever, single-shot pellet rifle available in .177 and .22 calibers. It features a spring piston power plant and open sights.

Manufactured by Air Venturi under a licensing agreement with Springfield Armory, the pellet rifle is a faithful replica in appearance and a good performer suitable for fun plinking and small game hunting . And at $200, it costs less than 10 percent of what the anniversary edition of the real firearm will run you. Here is a closer look at this replica air gun.

M1A Replica Air Rifle Overview

The air-powered version of the M1A combines realistic style with functional performance. The underlever spring-piston design is a perfect match for the M1A, as what would be the gas cylinder on the firearm serves as the air gun’s cocking lever. Pulling down on the cocking lever opens a port for loading pellets. The loading port is large enough to accommodate all but the largest, clumsiest fingers. But the underlever design means you can’t outfit the rifle with a traditional sling.

On underlever guns, that loading port is sometimes called a bear trap. That’s because some poorly designed guns don’t have safety, so accidentally tripping the trigger after the gun is cocked while the lever is down will snap the action shut. If you happen to have fingers in the port when that happens, it’s something you’ll remember for a long time, likely with scarring as a reminder. On the M1A, the bolt catch on the left side of the receiver is an anti-bear trap safety. You have to hit the catch to move the cocking lever back into place and close the loading port.

The M1A air gun features a workable bolt, but it’s just for show, and the pull is just an inch or so. The rifle has threads for a scope mount should a shooter want to install optics. The stock on the pellet rifle is some kind of non-defined hardwood, and the dark coloring is from wood stain, which looks like it was hastily applied by hand. Maybe that is intentional to give the rifle an antique-like patina.

This is a big, heavy gun—just like its firearm counterpart. Because it so closely resembles the firearm version in weight and feel, it would work well for M1A firearms shooters who want to get inexpensive trigger time.

From left to right: The M1A breech and rear sight; the bear trap safety release, a close up of the stock.

Range Performance

I tested the M1A pellet rifle over several weeks at my 25-yard backyard range and at my local range. The test model provided was a .22. As shooters familiar with spring-piston air guns know, they can be hold-sensitive. I shot off sandbag rests with a light hold that works best for me when shooting springers.

Spring-piston guns also typically improve in smoothness and accuracy after a substantial break-in period of 500 or even more shots. Many are also pellet-picky. Finding the right ammo isn’t quite the involved endeavor that tuning a high-end PCP can be, but it can still take time.

This style of air rifle can also be a bit rough early on, and that was the case with the M1A. But cocking became noticeably smoother after a dozen shots or so. The rifle’s cocking effort is 35 pounds, which is pretty stout. Although the cocking lever can be extended for a bit more leverage.

I haven’t hit 500 shots with this pellet gun yet, but I’m already impressed by its performance. The gun’s power is consistent. Shooting 18-grain FX domed pellets , velocity ranged from 689 to 710 feet per second, which equates to about 20-foot pounds of energy. That’s plenty for pest control or hunting small game.

While accuracy seems to be an afterthought with some replica air guns, that’s not the case here. The M1A is quite accurate, though centering groups required setting the windage adjustment on the rear peep significantly to the left. At 25 yards, I was getting 1- to 1 ½-inch groups out of the gate with the above-mentioned FX domed pellets. The groups tightened up slightly when I tried 18-grain Air Arms domed pellets. The trigger is advertised as two-stage and non-adjustable. I didn’t feel much of a first stage—just a gradual pull before the break, which I measured at just under 2 pounds.

The M1A air rifle grouping at 25 yards.

As I always do when testing springers with iron sights, I pulled out my peep sight adorned Feinwerkbau 124 to shoot a couple of groups under the same conditions. Groups from the .177 Feinwerkbau—which is a tack-driver at 25 yards with a scope—were a little better than the M1A groups, but not by much.

So, why not scope the M1A? The receiver is drilled for a scope mount, and I have no doubt that half-inch groups at 25 yards would be easy with a scope. However, putting a scope on this gun seems like heresy, though I might do it temporarily just for fun and to see just how accurate it can be. But for now, I’m sticking with the iron sights—just like the real gun.

Final Thoughts

Many replica air guns are intended as practice alternatives for firearms shooters looking for an inexpensive way to get trigger time or to appeal to a shooter’s nostalgia for historic firearms. While the Springfield Armory M1A pellet rifle checks both of those boxes, it’s also a functional shooter that can be an effective hunting or plinking rifle. Despite a so-so trigger and open sights, it’s surprisingly accurate out of the box and will likely improve as it breaks in. It’s a gun that wants and deserves to be shot, not just admired as an homage to a classic American firearm.

HARD AIR MAGAZINE TEST CONCLUSIONS

The Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle reinforces the company’s position as the price/performance leader in the expanding air archery market. There’s no other arrow gun that comes anywhere near it’s price and the closest competitor – the AirSaber – is another Umarex product!

The AirJavelin is aggressively-priced, shoots well and has power enough for small game hunting. Its light weight, easy cocking and flexible length of pull means that this really is the product that could interest the whole family in air archery.

It’s another HAM Gold Award winner from Umarex!

VALUE FOR MONEY

The Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is the clear price leader in the expanding air archery market. At a Street Price of $170, it’s close to half the price of the next cheapest model – the Umarex AirSaber . So it’s cheap, but is the AirJavelin good value?

Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle Test Review

The way that Umarex has been able to hit this ground-breaking price point is by using CO2 as the power source. All the other currently-available air archery guns are PCPs.

This brave departure has produced the most powerful ever CO2-powered airgun . True, the power level is still lower than the competing PCPs. However the cost of the gun is much less and there’s no additional costly accessories such as tanks, pumps or compressors as no High Pressure Air is required.

The flip side of this argument is that the running cost of CO2 is high at around 75 Cents per shot (depending on how many shots you’re happy to accept from one 88/90 Gram CO2 cartridge). But with the average HPA hand pump running at around $200, you can take approximately 265 shots with the Umarex AirJavelin before breaking-even with the cost of that hand pump.

safari and outdoor air rifles

Looked at from a different perspective, the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is comparable in price with some low-end crossbows of similar power. However it offers the advantage of compactness and minimal cocking effort, waaay less than that required to cock any crossbow.

The other issue with CO2 power is that it’s not the most friendly power source to use in cold weather – the usual hunting environment for most of us, at least in the northern part of the USA.

However, Umarex USA tells HAM that in their testing: “Hot Hands body warmers will keep the 88g CO2 bottle and expansion chamber at 70F for several hours when the outside temperature is 38F. In our experience, these warmers have not taken the CO2 to a dangerous temperature when applied at any ambient temperature.”

That’s a long answer to the “Is it good value?” question. In summary, the HAM Team considers that – yes – the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is great value. It allows anyone to get involved with air archery for the minimum of investment, yet it’s powerful enough for small game hunting and  target practice.

Speed and accuracy.

Let’s deal with accuracy first…

For our HAM testing, we set-up an archery target at 22 yards from the firing point. Although this was closer than the 40 Yards range we used to test the Umarex AirSaber PCP arrow gun , we felt it to be a more realistic range for an air archery product of this power.

HAM Tester Doug Wall undertook a rough sight-in for the AirJavelin using the supplied open sights.

Then Stephen Archer fired it. The target below shows the first three shots he ever fired with the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle. A 1-Inch Center-To-Center (CTC) group for 3 arrows at 22 Yards!

That clearly demonstrated the potential for accurate small game hunting and definitely impressed us with the ease-of-use of the AirJavelin…

Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle Test Review

As for speed and power, the test results were also good, although not quite what we had expected!

In summary, the AirJavelin gave us 10 shots with an average of 299 FPS. That equates to an average of 33.8 Ft/Lbs. That level of Muzzle Energy confirms the gun as being suitable for small game hunting. As Umarex explained to HAM: “That’s at least 15 high power shots for hunting anything as big as a coyote. There are at least another 15 shots with sufficient energy to kill foxes, rabbits, squirrels, etc.”

We were shooting at an ambient air temperature of about 82 degrees F in the shade.

Our expectations for this CO2-powered arrow gun were that the first shot would be the fastest, followed by a steady decline in FPS. This is what Umarex test data indicates .

However, we found that the Muzzle Velocity had a tendency to increase over the 10-shot test string, rather than fall!

Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle

As the AirJavelin had been “seasoning” in the shade at the 82 degrees ambient temperature for some time before firing, maybe that was the cause of our unusual test result. Perhaps the gun had unintentionally heated-up to a temperature very close to that of valve lock (90+ degrees).

In that case, firing the AirJavelin would – as with any CO2-powered airgun – produce a cooling effect. However, if the gun’s temperature had been critically close to valve lock, that cooling effect would have actually increased the Muzzle Velocity as it cooled on firing. That, at least, could explain the test results we found…

TRIGGER AND COCKING EFFORT

The trigger of the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is non-adjustable. Average pull weight on test was 10 Lb 1 Oz. That sounds terrible, but for some reason, it actually didn’t feel anywhere so heavy!

Maybe the comfortable shape and good positioning relative to the pistol grip has something to with this perception. When pulling the AirJavelin’s trigger, there’s first a little slack, then a long, steady pull back until a “stop” is clearly felt. Just a touch more pull trips the sear, firing the gun.

So this is definitely not a target rifle trigger. But then this is not a target rifle, it’s a hunting arrow rifle! Overall the HAM Testers found the AirJavelin’s trigger quite acceptable for it’s intended use.

The manual safety has a push-across action that’s extremely positive in operation.

Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle Test Review

Cocking is achieved using the straight-pull side lever. This can be set for operation to the owner’s choice, either right hand or – as in the photograph below – for left-handed operation.

As the Owner’s Manual warns, the arrow must be slid into place prior to cocking the AirJavelin. De-cocking also can be achieved by carefully following the Manual’s instructions.

The cocking effort was regarded as quite light and definitely less than expected, by the HAM testers. Although the pull weight was beyond the range of our Digital Trigger Pull Gauge, it can’t be much more than that of the trigger: perhaps in the 12 – 15 Lb range…

COMPARISON TO MAKERS CLAIMS

The manufacturer claims a maximum Muzzle velocity of 323 FPS for the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle. The maximum recorded in this HAM test was… 323 FPS!

Umarex also claims that the AirJavelin is easy to use. It’s certainly easy to load and cock. Stephen Archer’s first three shots (above) also prove it’s easy to shoot well!

Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle Test Review

CONSISTENCY

Shot-to-shot consistency for the 10-arrow string in this HAM test showed an Extreme Spread of 48 FPS. This is about as expected and in line with the data published by Umarex on the retail box.

Trigger pull weight varied between 9 Lbs 8 Oz and 10 Lb 11 Oz on test, with the average being 10 Lb 1 Oz. While not brilliant, this variability was not easily perceptible to the shooter and, again, approximately as anticipated by the HAM Testers.

NOISE LEVEL

So far as the HAM Team is aware, there’s no way to add a moderator or other noise-reduction system to an arrow-firing airgun. Also, this a very powerful CO2-powered airgun and that power is purchased by using a lot of CO2 for each shot.

So there’s no way around it: the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is LOUD!

This is an unavoidable disappointment in this air archery product which is otherwise so backyard-friendly. If noise levels are an issue, the best answer is probably to invite the neighbors around to enjoy the fun and be part of the AirJavelin experience…

Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle Test Review

SIGHTS AND SCOPE

The Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is supplied with a fiber optic front and aperture rear sight. This rear sight is adjustable for both elevation and windage, although we would have liked to see a greater range of adjustability to aid with sighting-in.

safari and outdoor air rifles

The ideal solution would undoubtedly be to fit a red dot sight, or preferably a dedicated archery scope. However, although the AirJavelin has a long Picatinny-style top rail for mounting optics, the slot spacing will not work with a fixed-base mount.

Look at the way the slots do not match-up with the locking rods of this Leapers red dot sight in the photograph below. For the AirJavelin, you’ll definitely need to attach any optics using separate rings as this will allow the flexibility to match the rail’s slots.

Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle Test Review

SHOOTABILITY

There’s no doubt that the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is easy to shoot – as was already proven above.

It’s light – just 4 Lbs 10 Ozs in shooting trim – and the adjustable stock gives pull lengths all the way from 13.5 to 16.5 Inches. That should cover just about everyone and supports Umarex’s claim that this is an arrow gun for the whole family.

safari and outdoor air rifles

Another shootability/handling benefit is that the AirJavelin has a bolt handle that can be installed from either side of the gun. If you want left-handed cocking, it’s just a matter of screwing the bolt handle into that side.

The bolt handle does become a little loose with use, however. The answer is an occasional twist, or – if you want to keep it located on the same side at all times – a drop of red machinery adhesive (like Loctite) would undoubtedly stop that permanently.

This is the most-easily changed ambidextrous cocking system the HAM Team has ever seen. By far!

Those slots in the side of the “barrel shroud” are actually M-Lok slots. So a suitable bipod or other M-Lok accessories could well find their place on an AirJavelin. We’ll investigate this further in a separate post.

With the light weight and high power, the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle has a fair kick when fired. It’s not a shoulder-bruiser by any means, but there is a satisfying amount of felt recoil when you fire the piece.

APPEARANCE AND FINISH

Ah, appearance!

The Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is definitely an unusual-looking airgun. It has a futuristic look that could be construed as rather toy-like at first. Then there’s that “wide mouth” look at the front end…

But with more than 30 Ft/Lbs of Muzzle Energy available, this really is NO TOY! With time, the HAM Team has become more used to it’s looks. Let’s say “handsome is as handsome does” best expresses the AirJavelin’s appearance.

Externally, this is an all-synthetic airgun. Mold quality looks good, with good fit and finish. There are prominent seams to be found on the top and bottom surfaces, however we need to remember the price and for that, it’s satisfactory. In fact, the only external metal part appears to be the safety and a few screw heads.

The AR-style collapsible buttstock is familiar. It is finished with a pleasant rubber buttpad.

BUYING AND OWNING

You’ll find the Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle available from the usual online sources such as Airgun Depot. It’s clear from the colored retail packing and extensive use of molded synthetic parts, however, that Umarex has designs on a much wider market for this product.

Given Umarex USA’s distribution strength, HAM wouldn’t be surprised to see it make an appearance at big box sporting goods stores and, maybe, other retail locations in the near future.

Below. The iron sights and bolt handle are supplied separately and must be installed by the owner. That’s not a big job…

safari and outdoor air rifles

The Umarex AirJavelin CO2 Arrow Rifle is shipped with three arrows. These are fitted with field points, although broadheads can be screwed into place if required. Additional packs of 6 AirJavelin arrows are available.

88/90 gram CO2 cartridges are a consumable supply. As this gun is a lot of fun to shoot, you may want to consider buying a bulk supply to reduce the cost per shot.

The AirJavelin is supplied with a well-illustrated manual of typical Umarex corporate style in English, Spanish and French. It is, however, printed in color, another indication of Umarex’s high expectations for this price-leading arrow gun.

The manufacturer’s warranty of 12 months is supported by Umarex in Fort Smith, AR.

Finally, make sure to check out the Airgun Sporting Association map for an indication that it’s legal to hunt with any arrow gun. You can then check with your state’s Conservation or Hunting Agency for more details and confirmation.

7 Best Air Rifles for Squirrel Hunting

Table of Contents

This best air rifle for squirrels guide looks at the best on the market taking into consideration reliability, brand, caliber, and noise suppression/dampening.

Squirrel hunting squirrels can be both challenging and rewarding and choosing the best air rifle is very important in ensuring a humane and efficient experience.

Squirrels are often considered pests in certain areas, causing damage to crops, gardens, and homes. As such, responsible squirrel hunting can help manage their population and mitigate potential ecological imbalances.

When choosing an air rifle for squirrel hunting, several factors come into play. The ideal rifle should strike a balance between power, accuracy, and noise reduction. Additionally, factors such as the rifle’s weight, handling, and optics compatibility play crucial roles in enhancing the overall hunting experience.

One of the key considerations in selecting the best air rifle for squirrels is the caliber. .22 caliber air rifles are often preferred for their balance between power and accuracy, delivering sufficient force to ensure a humane kill while maintaining precision for accurate shot placement.

Squirrels are known for their keen senses. Rifles equipped with advanced sound-dampening technology, such as suppressors or shrouded barrels, contribute to a stealthier approach, minimizing the chances of alerting nearby wildlife.

Another important aspect is the rifle’s scope compatibility, as a clear and reliable scope aids in targeting these small, agile creatures with greater accuracy, especially when shooting from a distance.

How to Choose the Best Air Rifle for Squirrels

Choosing the best air rifle for squirrels requires careful consideration of various factors to ensure a humane, effective, and satisfying hunting experience

The .22 caliber is the best for squirrel hunting, it has the best combination of power and accuracy providing enough energy to ensure a clean kill while offering sufficient precision for accurate shot placement.

Noise Dampening

For squirrel hunting choose a quiet air rifle: Squirrels are alert and skittish creatures, easily spooked by loud noises. Look for air rifles with sound-dampening features such as suppressors or shrouded barrels. A quieter rifle allows for more stealthy approaches, reducing the risk of scaring away potential targets.

A reliable scope is essential for accurate shot placement, especially when dealing with small and agile targets like squirrels. Select an air rifle that is compatible with a quality scope, preferably with clear optics and a reticle suitable for small game hunting.

Power and Velocity:

Consider power and velocity: While a .22 caliber is generally suitable, ensure that the air rifle has sufficient power and velocity to deliver an effective shot. Look for rifles with consistent performance, achieving velocities that are humane for squirrel hunting (around 700-900 fps).

Trigger Mechanism

Look for a quality trigger: A smooth and predictable trigger is crucial for accurate shooting. Some air rifles come with adjustable triggers that allow you to customize the trigger pull according to your preferences, contributing to better shot control.

Safety Features:

Ensure the air rifle has reliable safety features, such as an automatic safety mechanism, to prevent accidental discharges. Safety is paramount when handling any firearm.

Is .177 or .22 better for squirrel hunting?

Many squirrel hunters prefer the .22 caliber for its combination of good accuracy, ample energy, and effective penetration. The larger pellet size can help ensure a humane and clean kill, especially when dealing with the smaller and agile bodies of squirrels.

FAQs on the Best Air Rifle for Squirrels

What type of air rifle is recommended for small game hunting?

Selecting a PCP air rifle is advisable for small game hunting, especially when aiming for accurate shots over longer distances. PCP guns typically feature repeaters and exhibit flatter trajectories, particularly with larger calibers. This makes PCP airguns the preferred choice for dedicated small-game hunters.

What features should I look for in a scope for squirrel hunting?

Opt for a scope with clear optics, a reticle suitable for small game hunting, and sufficient magnification for accurate shot placement. A 3-9x40mm scope is a common and versatile choice for squirrel hunting, providing a good balance between field of view and magnification.

Are air rifles effective for squirrel hunting?

Modern air rifles possess the ideal attributes for squirrel hunting, including low noise levels, accuracy, power, and ease of maneuverability in wooded environments. These characteristics collectively make air rifles a highly suitable choice for those seeking an effective squirrel hunting firearm.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, choosing the best air rifle for squirrels will majorly be determined by the caliber choice, noise level (choose noise dampening), optics, weight, and handling. Both .22 and .177 calibers have their merits, but the 22 cal is the favorite for ethical and humane kills.

Huntsman Sporter Stock – Safari

The Huntsman Safari Sporter Stock is made from birch wood that is textured by a special machining process to aid grip

£ 295.00 inc. Vat

Textured ‘Safari Edition’ sporter stock to fit Daystate Revere and Regal PCP air rifle models.

  • High grip textured birch wood
  • Ambidextrous
  • Height-adjustable cheekpiece
  • Stippling panels on grip and forend belly
  • Low-profile action inletting

Can be used as an upgrade / replacement for walnut woodwork if something more practical is required.

Description

Ambi, with textured high-grip finish.

The Huntsman Sporter Stock (Safari Edition) fits the Daystate Revere and Regal actions. It can therefore be used as an upgrade / replacement for the Huntsman’s standard walnut woodwork if something more practical is required.

This stock will not fit those Daystate Huntsman models that preceded the Revere and Regal. These include the Classic, Midas, X2 and X2 Merlyn.

Construction

The Huntsman Safari Sporter Stock is made from birch wood. This is then ‘textured’ by a special machining process to add a much grippier surface. The stock is then dye-stained for a unique and stylish look. The Safari stock is therefore very practical. It offers unprecedented grip in wet and/or sweaty conditions, and is easy to touch up if damaged in the field. It is also very anti-reflective, so it will not give away your position when hunting.

The Safari Edition woodwork continues the Huntsman’s classic sporter heritage, but incorporates many bonus features besides its textured finish. It sports an ambidextrous design, so can be used by both right- and left-handed shooters. The cheekpiece is height adjustable via a hex bolt, and made from non-slip synthetic for a comfortable rest. This allows the perfect eye-to-scope alignment, no matter what sight you mount.

A rubber butt pad anchors the stock firmly in your shoulder. The curved pistol grip features stippled panels for added grip. There are also three stippling panels running the length of the underside of the sweeping forend.

Additionally, the forestock has been made deeper. This allows the action to sit lower, offering better ergonomics and handling.

Above the trigger, the Daystate logo has been laser-etched for an added touch of class.

Compatibility

The Safari Huntsman Sporter Stock will fit the Daystate Revere and Regal. It will not fit earlier Daystate Huntsman models, such as the Classic and X2 series PCP air rifles.

"I’m very proud to own my Daystate Red Wolf Midnight after many hours/ weeks of looking, including research into Daystate, and it is amazing. I know for sure that a guy at the club loves it and wants one. After letting him have a few shots at my club, he is going to get one. He had a FX impact, but he has now sold it to get a Daystate. I love the Daystate Red Wolf and wouldn’t get anything else"

Stephen Virgo

"Hello, I have been shooting air rifles all my life, ever since I was 12 years and I am 55 years old now. I have always wanted A Daystate but was a little afraid of an electric gun. I have put around ten tins of pellets and slugs through it, and this gun (Alpha Wolf HP) is amazing. I have the FX Mark 1,2, and 3 great guns, but this gun is like nothing I have ever had. I love it. The build quality is awesome. I have the new safari stock and love it. The next Daystate will be the Red Wolf, but I have to save up more before purchasing it. AOA is a great store to deal with. Their sales and service are awesome. thank you for fulfilling a life dream. What a great gun."

"I can't believe I finally have this amazing rifle in my hands. The Red Wolf is a thing of beauty that performs just as well as it looks, as consistent and accurate as you could ever wish for, together with an amazing shot count. I look forward to years of fun with the Red Wolf and feel privileged to own such a beauty."
