Hiking in Denver

Denver is a city with boundless outdoor fun and has an ideal location next to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. While The Mile High City is conveniently close to major peaks for hiking, there’s actually no need to head into the mountains when Denver’s regional trail system encompasses hundreds of miles for all ages and abilities to explore.

Make sure to have a comfortable pair of shoes, appropriate clothing layers for the weather conditions, plenty of water, and a snack. It’s also handy to have a copy of “The Best Urban Hikes: Denver,” written by Chris Englert for the Colorado Mountain Club, in your pack, as the trail descriptions and accompanying maps can help ensure excursions go off without a hitch. Englert focuses on 30 options that have easy access and typically range from 2 to 8 miles, including eight routes that are part of the 9 Creeks Loop that covers 41 miles.

Best Urban Hikes Denver Book Cover

For those seeking nature and wildlife watching, the 2.4 mile Lowry Park Loop is in the floodplain of the Aurora-Kelley Road Reservoir and is a favorite for bird watchers. On top of the dam, enjoy views of both downtown and the mountains. Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge , previously an army base, covers almost 23 miles and has 15 miles of trails. There is a visitor center, ponds, and lots of wildlife to view, including bison.

Even if you are staying out near Denver International Airport (DEN) or you want to squeeze in one last hike before flying home, there is a 3.8-mile option that is situated on airport-owned land next to Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge . The “First Creek at DEN Open Space Out-n-Back” trail parallels First Creek and is slated to link up to High Line Canal Trail in the future.

Speaking of airports, Central Park has miles of trails through Denver’s former Stapleton Airport grounds and is one of Denver’s largest urban parks. There's even a route that traverses by former runways and the old control tower.

“The Best Urban Hikes: Denver” guide also has all sorts of recommendations for hikes throughout the metro area, including options in Arvada, Aurora, Brighton, Broomfield, Centennial, Commerce City, Golden, Lakewood, Littleton, Thornton, and Westminster. What’s unique is how many involve water, open space, banner views, and a taste of Colorado’s iconic plains. Even more distinct is the fact that the metropolitan area has successfully created a 41-mile trail system known as the 9 Creeks Loop that circles Denver’s core via the Sand Creek Greenway, High Line Canal, Cherry Creek Trail, and Platte River Trail.

Englert describes the 9 Creeks Loop in eight segments, each with its own trailhead. In addition to the water, natural environments, and urban sights along the way, a few highlights along the loop are the historic Riverside Cemetery, Bluff Lake Nature Center, Morrison Nature Center at Star K Ranch, DeLaney Farms, Fairmount Cemetery (featuring one of North America’s largest heritage rose collections), Cherry Creek Golf Course, parks that honor two of Denver’s sister cities, Sunken Gardens Park, and public art.

Denver residents are an outdoorsy bunch, so don’t be surprised if you see people on these trails year-round! Even in the middle of winter, there are often 60- or 70-degree days. Some trails are busier than others based on location and if they are on commuter paths for locals going to and from work, school, and other favorite places.

Get out and hit the trails—even if it’s for just a short time—to experience The Mile High City from the ground up!

When to Hike Colorado

The state of Colorado offers a diversity of hiking opportunities, from high in the Rocky Mountains to low down in the deserts of Western Colorado, near the Utah border. We are focusing this information on when to do trips that Wildland Trekking offers in Rocky Mountain National Park and the Flat Tops. Both of these areas are high up in the mountains, where the scenery that Colorado is most famous for is at its best.

The short answer of when to hike Colorado is “summer.” But it is more nuanced than that because the summer months each offer a different experience. And winter months offer snowshoeing and skiing opportunities that are magnificent. To help understand the nuances of when to visit, we have provided descriptions below of the primary hiking/snowshoeing months in Colorado:

  • June marks the beginning of the summer hiking season in the Rocky Mountain State. It is great for hikes below treeline, but above treeline there can often be quite a bit of snow. Also, the creeks and rivers that drain the Rockies can be swollen in June, making river crossings more difficult. All in all, June is an excellent month to get your walking legs under you in Colorado.
  • July is the first month of the year when the alpine snowpack is mostly gone, rivers and creeks are back to lower levels, all trails are open, and the hiking is at its peak. Think about alpine treks this time of year, hikes to the tops of 14ers like Longs Peak , and long wilderness hikes like our Alpine Peaks, Lakes and Waterfalls Thru-Hike .
  • August is arguably the best month of the year to explore the Rockies on foot. Warm days and cool nights make for excellent hiking and sleeping, so a Rocky Mountain backpacking trip is a great option. Day hiking is also fantastic though. By mid August the crowds (especially on weekdays) are thinning out, most bugs are gone, and the mountains are at their prime.
  • September is perhaps the most under-appreciated month for hiking the Rockies and for Colorado backpacking trips. The days are still warm, and the nights are getting cooler which can be lovely. Fewer people are in the mountains since schools are in full swing. By late September the elk can be “in the rut” and bugling, which is a joy to hear. Finally, also by late September, the Aspen are often beginning to show the first signs of fall colors.
  • October is good for hiking through the first week or possibly into mid October. Days and nights are cool, the backcountry will be quite empty, and the Aspen will will be in their full autumn glory with yellows, reds and oranges exploding across the mountains.
  • November-March , i.e. winter months in the mountains, are of course not good months for hiking. But they offer the joys of skiing and snowshoeing instead. The mountains in winter are quiet, peaceful and astonishingly beautiful with frozen lakes and creeks and active winter wildlife (never guaranteed of course.) We offer half-day, full-day and multi-day snowshoe tours in Rocky Mountain National Park .

I’ve Never Heard of the Flat Tops – Are They Worth It?

Yes! The Flat Tops Wilderness is a remote, off-the-beaten-path range in northwestern Colorado. The Flat Tops rise out of the lower country as a magnificent plateau with an abundance of alpine lakes, high ridges and summits above treeline, pristine creeks and wonderful mountain solitude. If you’re looking for a more unique experience with fewer people, the Flat Tops offer a wonderful opportunity.

Safety Considerations in Colorado

As mentioned above, our Colorado hiking and backpacking tours feature both backcountry trips (backpacking, portered and llama treks) and frontcountry trips (inn-based and basecamp tours.) The safety considerations will vary depending on which option you go with.

On backcountry trips the primary safety considerations are black bears , lightning storms when above treeline, and river crossings. Of these 3, lightning is the main one that also applies to frontcountry trips. We use bear cannisters to securely store food, and we keep very clean camps to avoid attracting bears into camp. We have never had a serious bear incident in Colorado. To avoid lightning storms, we leave camp early when we know we are going to be hiking above treeline. Thunderstorms often form in the afternoons, so the key is being up and over any high passes or plateau before the storms set in. And river crossings on our trips tend to be quite manageable; the main consideration is using your trekking poles effectively to avoid slipping on wet rocks. If needed, your guide can also ferry your backpack across the river so you can cross less encumbered.

Guess what? we have a quiz for you!

  • A Black Hawk
  • B Central City
  • C Idaho springs

This one's wrong, but you're dang close. In fact, it is within walking distance of the correct answer. Originally called Mountain City, Black Hawk was the local gold-milling center for nearby miners. Booms and busts defined much of its history, but Black Hawk is a lovely gaming destination today.

Eureka! You struck trivia gold on this one. Keep it up!

While this locale was once a Colorado boomtown, it's harder to strike it rich there today. Still, you can visit for memorable experiences. Available activities include hiking on nearby Mount Blue Sky, gold-panning and soothing your body in the town's warm mineral springs. Those supplied the town's name, after all.

  • A Wild Bill Hickok
  • B Billy the Kid
  • C Buffalo Bill

Shoot! You missed this one. Wild Bill's birth name was James Butler Hickok. Wild Bill had many pursuits. He scouted, gambled, acted, served for the Union during the Civil War and he into a gunfight or two. Hickok was a Bill with many facets.

This beloved era included plenty of Bills and Williams, but America's most-infamous Billy was actually born Henry McCarty, and he went by many monikers, William H. Bonney among them. The Kid lived fast and died young, but you might catch a feel for his spirit when you visit Colorado.

Very nice! You got this one right, you straight shooter!

  • A Marijuana, duh!
  • B Elevation
  • C Miles to drive

If you chose this answer, we suggest you clear your head with a natural high. You can find plenty near Denver. Colorado's peaks exceed 14,000 feet, and you can enjoy them during every season. In addition to skiing and snowboarding here, you can bike, hike and enjoy arts festivals, too.

This answer's correct. Keep it up for a truly high score!

In fact, Colorado has about 185,000 miles of road within its borders, but they do not provide our largest city with its famous nickname. Denver sits at the base of the Rockies and atop the Great Plains. When you're here, you're one mile above sea level.

  • A Mount Elbert
  • B Pikes Peak
  • C Mount Blue Sky

Well done! Your Colorado knowledge extends to impressive heights.

While Pikes Peak is impressive, and some folks even race automobiles up its demanding incline, its summit falls just short of the highest peak in the state. If you placed a football field that includes the end zones atop this 14,115-foot beast, you would achieve Colorado's tallest point.

This answer's wrong, but you may have been fooled by the mountain's similar name to the actual highest peak. The pinnacle of the Mount Blue Sky Wilderness, this peak rises to 14,271 feet. Whoa! If you hike here, bring plenty of water and snack mix that doesn't taste like a tree.

Are you a history professor? Either way, you got this one right!

Oops! Other territories may have gained statehood during that year, but we're only interested in Colorado, friend. If you've never been here before, we suggest you correct that unfortunate fact soon. Colorado features a wide array of ways to recharge your personal state.

Well, it seems you picked the wrong answer. Don't get down on yourself. You weren't born a Colorado expert, after all. If you spend a little time here, you can change that fact, and you'll surely soon agree with us that Colorado is America's true gem.

  • A Butch Cassidy
  • B Doc Holiday
  • C Wild Bill Hickok

It looks like you missed this one! Though Butch Cassidy also reportedly died due to a gunshot, he was not present at the card game where this infamous hand was dealt. Notably, Cassidy's ties to Colorado include a stretch in Telluride. Of course, he wasn't there to ski.

You guessed wrong, but Doc certainly had a Colorado connection. Most notably, he is buried in Glenwood Springs, where he died at the ripe age of 36. What were Holiday's reported last words? He said, "This is funny," as he gazed upon his bootless feet.

You're right! Did you bet it all on that one? Excellent!

  • A The show about cowboys
  • B The Wild West show
  • C The show about how to ride horses

Darn it! This answer is incorrect. Still, shows like this existed in the 19th century's last decade. You might have caught one in your city. If you did, you're obviously quite old now. Congratulations! Okay! That's enough silliness.

This question kicked like a fierce bronco, but you wrangled it!

Whoa! That's just wrong! You could see horse shows in the 19th century, but we wouldn't want to learn how to ride a horse from one. Today, you can come to Colorado to learn how to ride horses. Heck! You can also visit if you already know how.

This one's tricky! Please put down the ax. Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel was, in fact, shot elsewhere, but the story doesn't end there. In the 1990s, at King's insistence, a television miniseries entitled The Shining was shot at the hotel that inspired his original work.

You got it right! Now, try not to lose your head.

Twist and shout! You're correct. Feel free to share the news here, there and everywhere.

Well, heck! Wrong answer! Ireland's world-renowned U2 famously played Red Rocks early in their career, so you may have thought we were trying to whiz one past you. The Beatles played the amphitheater, too. Interestingly, Red Rocks was the sole date that did not sell out on their 1964 tour.

True! Throughout the year, Colorado is a wonderful place to actively enjoy pleasant days.

Yikes! You chose the wrong answer, but this one was practically a trick question. Denver averages 56 inches of snow annually, and Colorado's ski resorts enjoy significantly more. That precipitation requires clouds, right? Well, it comes in big, fluffy heaps, and our blue-sky days collectively total 10 months.

Larimer Square Larimer Square free

In 1858, a group of settlers struck gold at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Their discovery soon spread back to the East Coast, prompting people to pick up and move west. The site of the original pioneer camp (known back then as Auraria) soon grew into the charming area now known as Larimer Square. Although the city has since expanded, this historic neighborhood remains the heart and soul of the Mile High City, and according to some, it's the place to start your Denver experience thanks to its variety of restaurants, bars and shops. It's also a featured stop on many of the best Denver tours .

Before venturing to Larimer Square, you may want to pay a visit to the Larimer Square  website . Here, you'll find a listing of all the local businesses and upcoming events, not to mention maps that can help orient where specific dining, shopping and entertainment options are.

Football fans won't want to pass up the chance to spend some time on the Denver Broncos' home turf. Empower Field at Mile High can hold more than 76,000 NFL fans and is notable for its elevation, which sits at 5,280 feet above sea level. That, combined with the view of the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Denver skyline to the east, makes it a unique venue to visit.

If you can swing it, try to catch a home game. Ticket prices vary by game and availability, and you'll want to purchase your seats well in advance to ensure availability. If you can't make it to a game, you can tag along on a guided tour of the stadium. Led by employees from the on-site Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Museum (one of the stops on the tour), these 75- to 90-minute tours take participants to the visiting teams' locker rooms, the end zone as well as into the network television production compound and the TV and radio broadcast facilities. Recent visitors described the tour experience as incredible thanks to the knowledgeable guides.
