Canadian Rockies Overview

Canadian Rocky Mountains Tours – The Ultimate Guide

The Rocky Mountains (or Rockies) in Western North America have been around for more than 55 million years. This majestic and imposing 3000-mile range extends from British Columbia in Canada to New Mexico in the United States. Formed by movements of the earth and sculpted by the action of glaciers, the Rockies stand today as a testament to the passage of time and the immense power of nature.

Humans have lived among the Rockies since the Ice Age. Today, this is one of the most visited destinations in the world. When you read reviews online, the Rockies regularly feature on peoples’ bucket lists. Tourists and locals alike are in awe of the unspoiled beauty of the majestic snow-capped peaks. Whether they’re visiting for one day or 20 days, the abundance of flora and fauna in the region and spectacular scenery never fail to mesmerize visitors.

Many people plan trips to the Rockies to revel in recreational and sporting activities such as camping, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, golfing, boating, and rafting, to name a few. Others travel to this special region simply to experience a connection with nature that only the pristine expanse of the Rockies can provide. Lake Louise and the  Banff National Park are other popular stops that attract an estimated 4.5 million visitors every year. There are several castle-like resorts dotting the area along the railway line that offer unique backdrops for your photos. While in Banff, a Gondola ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain is a must for what are arguably some of the most breathtaking views in the Rockies. The drive on the Icefields Parkway is considered not only one of Canada’s best, but one of the most beautiful in the world.

We recommend you head up to the observation deck of the Calgary Tower, more than 150 metres above the city. On a bright day, you’ll enjoy incredible views as far as the Rocky Mountains, what a fantastic way to start your trip!

Later, we’ll get together for a welcome drink at the hotel.

Day 2 Calgary -Banff

This morning we will make our way to the town of Banff. On the way, we’ll pass through the spectacular scenery of the Rocky Mountains and tour Banff National Park, where staggering views appear at every turn. Snow-capped mountains, crystal-clear lakes, sparkling streams and swathes of forest are just some of the attractions in this stunning destination. The wildlife is equally as impressive too, so look out for black and grizzly bears, wolves, elk and deer on land, then keep your eyes peeled for eagles, hawks and ospreys in the sky.

When we arrive in Banff, you’ll have some free time to explore and have lunch if you wish. There's plenty to see and do here, you could perhaps take a scenic walk along the town’s trails or browse the shops for souvenirs. If you prefer organised sightseeing, we offer an optional ride by cable car to the top of Sulphur Mountain.

Day 3 Lake Louise

Our first stop today is at Johnston Canyon, where we’ll take a short walk to see the waterfalls. Then, it’s on to the breathtaking Lake Louise, a glacial, jade-green lake set high in the mountains. Surrounded by dramatic, soaring peaks, it is described as one of Canada's most beautiful locations, so be sure to have your camera ready. We’ll have plenty of time here and there are easy walking trails to explore if you want to appreciate the beauty of the lake from a different viewpoint. On the way back to the hotel, we’ll visit the awe-inspiring Moraine Lake and admire its stunning, turquoise-coloured water. Then, if you wish, you can end your time in Banff with one more unforgettable adventure. Why not take an optional helicopter flight over the Rockies for even more spectacular views!

Day 4 Banff - Jasper

At times, the Banff - Jasper Highway climbs to more than 2,000 metres above sea level, and the mountain ranges flanking it soar to more than 3,00 metres. Today, we're going to travel along this iconic route, known as the Icefields Parkway, pausing along the way to take in the views.

Before we arrive in Jasper, we're going to stop at the Great Columbia Icefield. Covering 89 square miles and with ice as deep as 365 metres, you’ll have free time to admire this breathtaking sight at leisure. If you’re up for an adventure, an optional Ice Explorer ride to the Athabasca Glacier is highly recommended. Travelling in a purpose-built, all-terrain vehicle, you’ll learn about the history of this ever-changing wonder and have an opportunity to walk on the 10,000-year-old sheet of ice.

Day 5 Jasper

A former railroad town, Jasper is now known for its breathtakingly beautiful national park. You're going to discover its incredible highlights today, including Maligne Lake, renowned for its spectacular azure waters and Maligne Canyon with its spectacular waterfalls and scenic bridges. Back in the town of Jasper we'll enjoy a lunch of distinctly Canadian produced before an afternoon at leisure – maybe by browsing the shops or sipping a locally brewed beer. Alternatively choose to join us on an optional excursions to take in the amazing scenery on an exhilarating Athabasca River rafting experience.

Day 6 Jasper - Kamloops

Our journey to Kamloops in British Columbia takes us over Yellow Head Pass, past Mount Robson – the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies – and along the Trans-Canada Highway. The scenery may be spectacular but the highlight of your day is sure to be our stop at Blue River for an exciting Rockies river safari. This once-in-a-lifetime cruise will take you through Grizzly Bear Valley on the lookout for an array of wildlife including moose, eagles, ospreys and, of course, grizzly bears.

Our overnight hotel in Kamloops has a convenient, downtown location, ideal if you want to head out for dinner this evening.

Day 7 Kamloops - Victoria

The ferry terminal is where we're heading this morning on a journey which takes us once again through the rugged scenery of the Rocky Mountains. Our ferry will take us to Vancouver Island and then we'll travel by road to Victoria, the provincial capital of British Columbia. This fabulous city is often said to resemble an old English town, with its narrow streets and grand buildings. We’ll get our bearings and see its highlights on a sightseeing tour when we arrive.

Day 8 Victoria - at Leisure

You can soak up Victoria's old-world charm at your own pace today as you explore at leisure. Maybe you’ll head to the renowned Royal BC Museum or visit one of the city’s craft breweries for a tasting. If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, you won’t want to miss today’s optional whale-watching excursion. The waters around Vancouver Island offer the ideal opportunity to get closer to the delights of the natural world and there's a chance you'll see orca, or killer whales, in their natural environment.

Day 9 Victoria - Vancouver

Later, we return to the mainland by ferry and travel by road to Vancouver. This city boasts an idyllic setting, where the ocean meets the mountains, and you'll see its highlights this afternoon. Your sightseeing tour will take you to the city's historic core, known as 'Gastown', and then on to bustling Chinatown and Stanley Park with its famous totem poles.

Our centrally located hotel is just steps away from some fabulous restaurants, so why not head out and see what’s on offer for dinner. Your Holiday Director will be happy to point you in the right direction if you would like a recommendation.

Day 10 Vancouver - at Leisure

It’s the last full day of your holiday and you’re free to do as you please in Vancouver. You could explore what culinary treats are on offer at Granville Island’s Public Market, check out a museum or head to one of the large shopping malls for some retail therapy.

Alternatively, if you'd like to join an optional excursion, come with us to Vancouver's North Shore. Here you'll see the spectacular Capilano Suspension Bridge and take a cable-car ride up Grouse Mountain. On a sunny day the views of the city, the snow-capped mountains of Washington State and Vancouver Island are simply breathtaking.

Day 11 Vancouver - UK

Enjoy a little more free time in Vancouver before we drive you to the airport for your flight home.

After an overnight flight, you'll arrive back in the UK today.

What is the weather like in the Canadian Rockies?

During summertime, weather in the Rockies is sunny and temperatures tend to be mild and warm. However, it is important to note that weather in the mountains is ever-changing and hard to predict, so we highly recommend packing up layers in case of light rain or chilly nights.

In the summer months, you can participate in a number of activities that the winter frost wouldn’t allow, such as kayaking, hiking, and river rafting. In addition, after the spring bloom, chances are you’ll be able to see lots of wildlife , like bears and elk!

Am I going to see the blue lakes in the Rocky Mountains?

Lakes in the Canadian Rockies are frozen during the winter months, and start to melt in late April. Usually, you will need to wait until late June to be able to swim in them, and they’ll stay blue until October .

There are a number of factors that contribute to the lakes in the Rockies displaying the captivating shades of blue and turquoise, such as glacial and rock sediments, and the refraction of the sunlight on the water.

What is the difference between the Rockies Classic and Rockies Premium tours?

Our Rockies Summer Classic tour is the very first itinerary that Discover Canada Tours created and guided in 2005. It offers an essential, must-have experience in the Canadian Rocky Mountains in only 4 days and 3 nights , with a stay in Revelstoke, Banff and Valemount. While the route is similar to the Rockies Summer Premium tour, the pace  of the trip is faster , with slightly shorter stops along the way, slightly less inclusions, and only 1 night in Banff.

On the other hand, our Rockies Summer Premium tour offers a premier experience with stays in higher-end hotels , like the world-renowned cabins of Mike Wiegele, admission with breakfast to the Banff Gondola, and an extra full day and night in Banff with ample time to enjoy the heart of the Rockies.

How do I book optional activities for this tour?

Discover Canada Tours offers special rates in the most popular attractions of the Canadian Rockies while on tour. To benefit from the best prices and secure your spots, we strongly advise that you book your optional activities in advance . Here’s how you can do it:

  • Online: While booking on our website, you can add your optional activities before checking out, after adding your tour to the cart, and on the second step of the reservation.
  • Email: After you complete your tour booking, you will receive a confirmation email with a list of optional activities that you can book by emailing us at [email protected] .
  • Call:  Contact our office by calling the toll free number 1-855-689-8128 "> 1-855-689-8128 , and one of our agents will be happy to book your optional activities for you. Our opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5:30 pm PST.

In addition to optional activities, we can also help arrange pre and post tour travel arrangements , including flights, accommodation, and travel insurance through Uniglobe Specialty Travel. Please contact our travel consultant specialist, Sepideh Sajjadi, at  [email protected] .

See For Yourself

We used Discover Canada Tours for our trip to Whistler BC. The views were spectacular and our bus driver / tour guide (Joe Bitgood) was awesome…very knowledgeable on the history of BC and it’s geology. Would highly recommend this excursion and Discover Canada.

5-stars

Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Value

I took the Whistler sightseeing tour with Joe as our guide, it was really great! Joe was very friendly and helpful, informative and knowledgeable about BC and its history; he told us interesting tidbits and stories about the province and Whistler/Blackcomb. I enjoyed being able to do my own thing on the tour, Whistler was beautiful! Thanks again to Joe and Discover Canada Tours!

My family and I booked 4 tours with this company and the first one was by far the best one. Special thanks goes out to Joe Bitgood for taking care of us and ensuring comfort throughout the day while also delivering the true history of British Columbia.

The tour was great! Our tour guide Meaghan was the best. Very nice and knowledgeable. She was funny too! Highly recommended!

FAQ’S

Your tour includes 3 main components: Hotel accommodation, a Rocky Mountaineer Rail trip, and a Deluxe motorcoach tour. Tour cost is based on the choice of hotel stay (standard or deluxe), rail service (GoldLeaf or SilverLeaf), and room occupancy (Single, Double, Triple, or Quad).

Published rates are per person in Canadian dollars before tax.

Pent-up demand for 2023 Canadian vacations has been extremely high, and we highly recommend that you book your seats as early as possible

Key West Travel does not provide individual pick-ups to ensure our tours depart Vancouver on schedule. Our centralized pick-up location is at 655 Burrard Street, the Hyatt Regency Vancouver..

Standard hotels are mountain lodge-style while Premium Plus hotels are resort-style. The majority of our guests choose standard accommodation as these hotels are very clean and comfortable, and travelers will get their own private room and washroom. Travelers who book Premium Plus accommodation often do so because they want to stay at Chateau Lake Louise. If you want to book deluxe accommodation, be sure to book early as these hotels sell out quickly – availability is limited within 6 months of departure!

Gratuities are not included in the prices, except for onboard the Rocky Mountaineer. It is customary to tip for excellent service in Canada.

Please refer to the itinerary for Rocky Mountaineer info. As for the motorcoach tour, this depends on the day. If you are traveling from Vancouver to Jasper or Banff, it will be a minimum of 10 hours. However, every 2-3 hours, you get out of the bus for mini breaks. During the sightseeing days, you will spend little time on the bus as you will be walking/sightseeing/hiking & etc.

Vancouver is heavily populated by laid-back and environmentally conscious people and is situated directly on the coast of British Columbia. The legendary resort town of Banff , located in the adjacent province of Alberta, is renowned for its mountainous landscape, turquoise waterways, and some of the nation's greatest skiing and other outdoor activities.

With a height of 4,537 feet (1383 meters) , Banff also happens to be Canada's highest town. The 560 miles (900 kilometers) that separate these two Canadian locations traverse three mesmerizing mountain ranges: the Coast, Columbia, and Rocky Mountains.

From Vancouver, visitors may choose to fly, brave the Canadian motorways, or even board a train that passes through some of the country's most breathtaking scenery on its journey to Banff. Visitors can see the Canadian wilderness up close by taking the train from Vancouver to Banff.

UPDATE: 2024/05/09 21:04 EST BY ERYNN RUIZ

This feature has been refreshed throughout with current links, pricing information, and insights into the train experience while traveling from Vancouver to Banff.

The Scenic, Bucket-List Train Itinerary From Vancouver To Banff

The two-day trip offers plenty of sights (and accommodation in kamloops).

A breathtaking two-day trip on the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff includes Kamloops hotel accommodations.

Day 1: Vancouver To Kamloops

Passengers will travel from the coast to central British Columbia aboard the Rocky Mountaineer train, which departs from Vancouver. They will enjoy traveling through the Fraser Valley, the province of British Columbia's agricultural heartland.

The Fraser River, which is home to many salmon, winds through this ancient valley, which is surrounded by beautiful green mountainsides.

The scenic train passes distinctive geographical features like the roaring waves of Hell's Gate as it goes through marvelous river valleys cut into the lofty Coast and Cascade Mountains.

As the train ascends onto the parched interior plateau and makes its overnight stop in Kamloops, the atmosphere progressively changes. On board the train, breakfast, and lunch are complimentary.

  • Hotels: Fairmont Waterfront, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, Pan Pacific, Sutton Place Hotel, and Sheraton Wall Centre

10 Affordable Yet Scenic Train Rides In Canada

Day 2: kamloops to banff.

As it draws closer to the breathtakingly beautiful snow-capped Rocky Mountains, the train progressively departs the ranchlands of south-central British Columbia. Passengers will traverse three national parks of Canada on the route from Vancouver to Banff: Glacier, Yoho, and Banff.

They will travel across the Kicking Horse Canyon and Spiral Tunnels to Rogers Pass and beyond Craigellachie, the historic location where the Canadian Pacific's last spike was driven rail was installed.

On the way to gorgeous vacation spots in Banff , you pass by the Continental Divide. On board the train, meals are served for breakfast and lunch.

  • Hotels: Banff Caribou Lodge, Rimrock Resort, Moose Hotel & Suites, Fairmont Banff Springs, and Elk & Avenue
  • Cost: Price varies according to the month, with rates ranging from $1,720 to $2,782

Optional add-ons increase the price, but you can schedule sightseeing tours to explore Banff, the icefields in Banff, and more through the Rocky Mountaineer's add-ons page . Note that Banff's weather will impact the availability (and enjoyment) of add-ons.

Best Time To Travel On The Rocky Mountaineer

The best time to take a train trip from vancouver to banff might be the summer.

There is no best time to travel from Vancouver to Banff. It all depends on the passenger’s preferences. A snowy mountain background and significant financial savings may both be experienced in April.

If passengers want to take home a camera roll full of images that look like postcards and yet save money compared to the peak season pricing, which typically goes into effect in the latter week of May/early June, May is a terrific month to take a Rocky Mountaineer train trip from Vancouver to Banff .

7 Bucket List Amtrak Vacations In Canada

If passengers want to experience some of the warm summer weather, beautiful scenery, and animal-watching opportunities, but avoid the full summer rush of tourists traveling to the well-known mountain towns of Lake Louise, Jasper, and Banff, June is a perfect time to take the Rocky Mountaineer train.

Warm weather and beautiful landscapes make July and August a top choice for those who wish to go trekking and enjoy the outdoors. The Rocky Mountaineer's most popular month for travel is September since it is such a wonderful time of year.

The golden hues of the larch and poplar trees provide a lovely setting to the low light of the sun glistening off the blue lakes as the leaves begin to change color. Finally, the last of the fall colors may be seen in October while avoiding the heavy tourist traffic. As the Rocky Mountaineer rail travel season ends in October, rates decrease once again.

One of the most influential rock bands of all time will roll into Vancouver next week.

The Rolling Stones will play a show at BC Place on Friday, July 5, performing a selection of their greatest hits and songs from their latest release,  Hackney Diamonds (2023).

The Stones last performed across the U.S. in 2021 for their No Filter tour, marking the first time the band had toured without drummer Charlie Watts since 1963. Watts, the self-effacing and unshakable Rolling Stones drummer who helped anchor one of rock’s greatest rhythm sections,  died in August 2021 . He was 80.

Mick Jagger will be just a couple of weeks shy of 81 when he hits the stage, while guitarist Keith Richards will be 80. Ronnie Wood remains the youngster of the surviving bandmates at 77.

The " Hackney Diamonds Tour " is, suitably, sponsored by the AARP, which is the American Association of Retired Persons.
