5 things I learned from renting a car for a road trip for the first time

Here’s what you need to know about taking an epic roadtripping adventure in a rental car

The agent didn’t seem to mind that I was driving his company’s car from San Diego all the way to Palm Springs, via Joshua Tree National Park in California. However, he did have some advice for me: “If you’re going to Joshua Tree, you’ll need something bigger with four-wheel drive.” 

I didn’t want to take any chances in Joshua Tree, so I upgraded from a compact to a midsize SUV for an extra $20. I was happy with my Volkswagen Tiguan, and I appreciated the extra space for my luggage—but I would have been just as fine with something smaller.

I wasn’t used to rental cars; in fact, I wasn’t used to driving cars other than my own or driving on anything but the hilly terrain of Tortola, British Virgin Islands, where I live. The island, with its hairpin turns and switchbacks, all on the left side of the road, prepares you for just about anything, but the idea of massive freeways and miles of open road worried me. 

When I started working remotely with more freedom to travel, I found myself adding destinations to my must-do list—state and national parks, mainly—that couldn’t be reached easily by public transportation. But there was no way my island Suzuki Grand Vitara, my “mountain goat,” was cutting it on the mainland. 

Could I do it in a rental car, I wondered? Do people even do that?

The answer is yes, a lot of people do. Even if you live stateside, you may not own a car, or want to save wear and tear on your own vehicle. Virtually all online travel agencies and car rental companies allow one-way rentals. They also offer unlimited mileage, so driving from Massachusetts to Texas isn’t out of the question—if you can afford it. 

One-way rentals tend to be more expensive because of the cost of transporting the vehicle back to its original destination. And you’re already traveling at a time when the cost of car rentals is sky-high for a number of reasons: An increase in domestic travel combined with manufacturing and supply chain issues has created supply and demand issues for rental car companies.  

The good news is that rental car prices have fallen slightly from a peak earlier in the summer, and so have gas prices for most of the U.S. Driving, even in a rental car, is generally going to be cheaper than flying to your destination when you factor in extra costs like baggage fees and airport parking. Plus, when you drive, you get to pick the itinerary. 

Based on my recent trips, here’s some advice for roadtripping in a rental car:  

1. Book early and do your research 

Traditionally, rental cars have been available as a last-minute add-on, but with current prices, you’ll want to book early, especially if you’re planning a road trip. Do your research and use a rental car tracking website to compare rates and find discounts. 

If you’re taking a road trip, you’re probably planning to do more driving than the average customer, so you’ll get your money’s worth. On my Southern California trip, I paid $63 per day for a compact car (not including the size upgrade or any fees), which was slightly below the average cost at the time. 

Using a rental car instead of your own car also lets you play the points and miles game. I booked through the Delta SkyMiles travel portal and paid with my SkyMiles card, which meant I got double the miles toward my next trip. On another trip, I used the Capital One travel portal, which allows me to earn miles or redeem them. Several other credit card companies offer similar portals. 

Renting a car in a city or in the suburbs is often cheaper than renting one at the airport, where you’ll pay extra taxes. A road trip can be a good chance to take advantage of this perk. 

Also consider peer-to-peer car-sharing services, like Turo , which can often save you money compared to a rental company. It also offers unique vehicles. Keep in mind that this service isn’t a good choice for one-way road trips. Since you’re renting someone’s personal vehicle, you’ll need to drop it off and pick it up at the same location.

2. Consider the size of your vehicle 

For city driving, a subcompact vehicle is probably fine, and smaller cars use less fuel. Depending on the length of your road trip, you may need to account for things like storing luggage and long hours behind the wheel. You’ll want to be comfortable, so consider the minimum size that you’ll need to fit all of your luggage and passengers comfortably. While you might dream of cruising down the Pacific Coast in a luxury convertible, it might not be the most practical, or cheapest, vehicle for your itinerary.

3. Be savvy about rental upcharges 

You may be tempted to get “the works” when it comes to rental add-ons, but realistically, most of these extras aren’t necessary. On my California trip, besides the midsize upgrade, I let them coax me into paying $40 for fuel service, which meant I wouldn’t have to worry about filling the tank before I returned the car. Since it was my first time renting a car, it felt like a good idea. 

On subsequent trips, I’m far more confident in my ability to find a gas station. If you’re on a long road trip, you’ll generally have plenty of time to refuel before returning the car. Agents may also try to sell you a pass to get through toll roads, but if you aren’t planning to drive on freeways, you should decline.

One of the advantages of roadtripping in a rental car is that you can be reasonably certain that the car is well-maintained. Rental companies aren’t always equipped to reach you if you’re in the middle of nowhere and your battery dies. If you’re concerned about this, you’re better off joining a roadside assistance membership service like AAA , which guarantees service anywhere, anytime, for nearly any reason, over any packages that the rental car company might offer.

Also check to see if your credit card offers primary rental car insurance, which protects the value of the car against damage and theft. This way, you can avoid having to pay for collision damage at the counter. Your current auto policy may also cover some items when you’re driving another vehicle.

4. Refuel your vehicle frequently

Don’t wait until it’s too late. When you’re in an unfamiliar car in unfamiliar territory, you may not have a feel for how much gas you’ll use before you run out. This happened to me in Joshua Tree—I drove in at night and underestimated the amount of time it would take to get out of the park (getting lost, with no signal on my cell phone, didn’t help). 

I made it to a gas station in Twentynine Palms with hardly a fume to spare. Even if you’re watching the gauge closely, you should always plan for the unexpected and refuel your vehicle frequently.

5. Take the scenic route

When mapping out my routes for trips, I often have one overarching goal: to avoid freeways by any means necessary. This isn’t only for the scenery—I prefer not to deal with tolls, and I find that driving on back roads is less stressful. Even if you choose to take the freeway, driving on less-trafficked byways first gives you the opportunity to get familiar with the feel of the car, especially if you don’t own a car or haven’t driven one in a while.

I’ll never forget my first solo road trip, stopping for photo ops along the way and having the freedom to know I could change the route on a whim. Renting a car can be the best option to travel safely, memorably, and oftentimes affordably.

If you incurred any spills or stains during your trip, consider cleaning them or notifying the rental car agency of any necessary cleaning.
• Refuel the Car: Check the fuel policy of the rental car agency and make sure that the car has a full tank of gas upon return. Fill up the tank at a nearby gas station before returning the car to avoid refueling charges. Keep the fuel receipt as proof if required.
• Inspect the Vehicle: Conduct a final inspection of the rental car for any new damage that may have occurred during your trip. Take note of any issues and inform the rental car agency before you complete the return process.

With the pandemic forcing hundreds of thousands of workers out of their cubicles and back into their home offices, people hit the road in droves, eager to explore this beautiful land of ours. RV rentals became a hot commodity, with some even ditching their homes to live on the road full-time.

International travel may be making its comeback this summer, but for plenty of Americans, the good old-fashioned road trip -- with its promise of the open road and the discovery of someplace new -- is calling.

But what's a road trip without a suitable car ? With so many automobiles to choose from for your next adventure, we wanted to highlight some of the very best options for any type of road trip.

For a coastal or island drive: Ford Mustang

Picture yourself driving down the Pacific Coast Highway in California or along the ocean in Hawaii , top-down, music turned up. It's hard not to see yourself driving a Mustang. Ford's pony car is one of the most emblematic symbols of Americana ever to exist. Conceived in the 1960s, it instantly became a hit for anyone looking for an affordable car went fast and turned a lot of heads in the process. The Mustangs of the past have become classics, but today's version is a thoroughly modern vehicle that's hard to beat for good-weather cruising.

The standard Mustang is no slouch: It comes equipped with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 310 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. For a cross-country adventure: Volvo XC90

If you're setting out on a cross-country road trip, comfort is key. You'll want a vehicle that's quiet, efficient, spacious, equipped with enough creature comforts to keep you and your companions entertained, isn't bothered by the wide range of pavement quality we have in this country and, perhaps most importantly of all, has comfortable seats.

Volvo's flagship SUV, the XC90, has all of that and more. It's roomy enough for you and your friends or family -- and all your things. Plus, it comes packed to the gills with the latest in automotive technology including a touchscreen-based entertainment system and top-notch stereo systems. Its solid build quality guarantees you'll have a comfortable ride, even over the pothole-ridden roads found in parts of the country (looking at you, upper Midwest ). For snowy roads: Audi A4 Allroad

If you're road-tripping in the winter -- or somewhere that sees snow almost year-round -- you're going to want a vehicle that's as sure-footed in the snow and slush as it is on dry pavement. The Audi A4 Allroad is a lifted version of its A4 Avant station wagon that offers extra inches of ground clearance, perfect for snowy roadways. But the main feature that make this elevated wagon a force to be reckoned with in the snow is its standard Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which allows the car to plod through rain, snow and slush with ease. (Of course, if you're driving on mountain roads with deep, heavy snow we'd recommend fitting the tires -- of any vehicle -- with chains for extra confidence.)

And, since this is more or less a station wagon, you'll have extra room for everyone and their things married with the driving dynamics of a car. The Allroad's four-cylinder turbocharged engine means you won't be stopping too often for gas, either.

For tackling all types of terrain: Jeep Wrangler

You can't do much better than a Jeep Wrangler if you're looking for a vehicle that will go anywhere and do (just about) anything. This iconic American truck comes in two- and four-door configurations and offers such options as a removable roof and doors for serious off-roading. The Wrangler comes with a true 4x4 four-wheel-drive system and is equipped with large tires and a high suspension which allows it to tackle rocks and other terrains with aplomb. Its generous ground clearance allows the car to ford through 30 inches of water -- in case your adventure brings you across rivers or streams.

If you're getting off the interstate and want to explore some of the landscape that can't be accessed by any old car, you can't go wrong with the Wrangler.

For national-park hopping: Jeep Grand Cherokee

There's another Jeep on this list -- and for good reason. Its venerable Grand Cherokee has been the brand's standard-bearer for years, combining the best of Jeep's inherent offroad abilities with creature comforts you'd expect from a luxury SUV. If you think your road trip will combine long stints on the highway with some offroading (perhaps at one or several national parks , for example), the Grand Cherokee is the perfect vehicle to choose.

It delivers a smooth ride on the road along with plenty of technology and other comforts that make it easy to spend a lot of time in it, but also can handle anything that comes its way once you veer off the pavement.

Use the right credit card for your rental

When renting a vehicle , it's important to make sure you are covered in case you get into an accident. Damage waivers are typically available to purchase from your rental company at a cost of about $10 to $20 per day, but some credit cards , including the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve® offer a primary damage waiver in case of damage or theft. Since the insurance is primary, you won't have to file a claim with your personal car insurance if there's damage to your car. You won't have to pay a hefty deductible or be subject to rate changes, but be aware that coverage is only valid on rentals of 31 days or less.

Renting a car in Ireland gives you the freedom and flexibility to explore how and when you like, but it can be a  very  confusing process .

Mainly as Irish car rental companies use jargon that can fool you into buying unnecessary add-ons…

Step 1: The key need-to-knows about renting a car in Ireland

1. The cheapest option is never all it seems

Regardless of whether you use a comparison site or go direct via one of the Irish car rental companies, the cheapest option is never  all it seems.

The cheapest price  always means the lowest level of insurance has been selected.

2. Insurance is deliberately confusing

The main issue people have when renting a car in Ireland is insurance.

As a rule of thumb, you’re  generally  best-off selecting the highest level of cover. There are 3 main types of insurance:

• Third Party: A non-optional legal requirement
• CDW: Reduces the amount you’re liable to pay if your rental is damaged or stolen
• Super CDW: Can often reduce your excess to zero
• Full coverage:  Available with Discover Cars

3. You’ll have to leave a deposit

The vast majority of people looking to rent a car in Ireland will have a security deposit placed on their credit card.

• How much : I have seen this as high as €2,900
• My   issue : You only find the exact amount at the pick-up counter
• When it’s ‘released’ : Usually within 4 working days of dropping the car back
• Make sure : Your card has enough of a limit to cover your trip

4. There are many policies and requirements

I’ll go into these requirements for renting a car in Ireland in detail further down, but here are the key points:

• Age : You need to be 21+
• Northern Ireland : You’ll be charged a fee for entering
• Milage limits : They can be tricky if you have a long Ireland itinerary
• Fuel policy : Always avoid ‘Collect Full, Return Empty’

5. Compare prices for the best rate

The best way to rent a car in Ireland is to see how the various companies compare. I have been recommending Discover Cars for the last 2 years and have have nothing but positive feedback (they have a 4.6/5 rating on Trustpilot from 160,000+ reviews).

Step 2: See if you fit the car rental requirements

Before you start looking at the ins and outs of how to rent a car in Ireland, you need to understand if you can actually rent one.

While there are several requirements for  driving in Ireland , the one that tends to cause the most confusion is around age.

Requirement 1: A valid drivers licence and ID

You need a valid ID and drivers licence for renting a car in Ireland. Here’s the key info:

• EU and EEA member states : You can drive in Ireland once the licence is valid
• UK licences : These are valid if you live in the UK and are visiting Ireland
• USA + other licences : Once you hold a national driving licence and an international driving permit you can drive in Ireland

Requirement 2: Age restrictions

• If you’re under 21: Can’t rent a car in Ireland
• If you’re between 21 and 25: Some companies will rent to you but you’ll pay a hefty daily surcharge
• If you’re over 75: You can rent a car but may need to provide specific documentation

Requirement 3: Credit cards and debit cards

Some companies allow you to rent a car in Ireland without a credit card.

For example, Enterprise allows you to use a Debit Card , but only at non-airport locations.

Many Irish rental car companies won’t accept debit card and require you to have a credit card with you when you arrive at the counter.

Step 3: Understanding car rental insurance in Ireland

Car rental insurance is the main issue for those renting a car in Ireland. It’s also what can turn what looks like a good deal to a money burner in seconds.

However, once you know what to look out for, there’ll be no surprises when you reach the counter.

1. C ar Hire Excess (you need to understand this first)

Understanding Car Hire Excess is  hugely important when renting a car in Ireland.

This is a set amount which Irish car rental companies WON’T COVER if you have to make a claim.

For example, your rental will include basic insurance in the price (see point 2). However, if you damage the car, you are liable to pay a fixed amount towards the damage.

2. Third Party Liability Insurance is a legal requirement

Third-Party Cover  is included, by law , in your car rental price.

In a nutshell, Third Party Liability Insurance is the  minimum level of cover that’s legally allowed to drive a car in Ireland:

• It covers : Damage to someone else’s car/property and any injury you cause to the person
• It doesn’t cover : Any medical or legal costs you incur along with any damage to the car you’re driving

3. Collision Damage Waiver

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is generally where a good chunk of confusion is caused when renting a car in Ireland.

CDW is additional insurance coverage that you can take out from your Ireland car rental company or via a third party.

It’s optional and the cost is charged on a per-day basis. If you buy this, make sure to check the excess fee (i.e. the amount you’ll have to pay if there’s an accident).

• What it does:  It reduces the amount you’re liable to pay if your rental is damaged or stolen
• If you decline:  Most rental companies will make you sign a contract to say you’re fully responsible for the value of the car
• Credit card cover:  Some credit cards offer this level of cover, but you have  to be 100% sure that 1, it covers you to drive in Ireland and that 2, the rental company accepts it

4. Super CDW and full coverage

Third Party and CDW cover you for major incidents, however, you’ll still be liable for minor ones .

Super CDW is offered by car rental companies in Ireland and it can often reduce your excess to zero (i.e. you won’t need to pay anything in the event of an accident).

If you book via DiscoverCars add their ‘Full Coverage’. This covers the excess so, if something happened to the car, you wouldn’t need to pay anything (always read the Ts&Cs).

5. What I do

When I need a rental, I book via DiscoverCars and add the full coverage for peace of mind.

When booking, I’ll always check if CDW is included (it’s listed under the photo of the car).

Step 4: What to check when you’re booking

I realise that our Ireland car rental guide might seem long winded, but it genuinely only contains the need-to-know info.

So, with that in mind, the next section looks at some the key things you need to be aware of when you book your car rental in Ireland.

1. Time spent reading the Ts&Cs is worth its weight in gold

If there’s one tip you take from this guide to renting a car in Ireland it’s to read the Ts&Cs of your rental agreement before you sign and actually  understand  what’s being said.

Many  (not all) people that have negative experiences with rental companies do so due to a lack of research.

2. The pick up point (plan it around your itinerary)

When planning a trip to Ireland , the itinerary is key. Even more so if you plan on getting around Ireland in a rental.

Have a clear route planned and then ensure the pick-up location (e.g. Shannon) fits with your starting point.

If you follow an itinerary from our massive road trip library you’ll get tips on when you will/won’t need a car.

Book in advance to save cash: As tends to be the case with many hotels and airlines, the cost to rent a car in Ireland tends to skyrocket when you book closer to the date of collection.

3. The provider rating

If you use Discover Cars when hiring a car in Ireland, always look at the rating next to the provider.

Personally, I’d only rent from a provider with an 8+ review score.

4. The Northern Ireland charge

Many car rental companies charge you if you enter Northern Ireland and they track this via the car’s GPS (see our guide to Ireland vs Northern Ireland if you’re confused).

You need to check if:

• It’s a per-crossing charge (i.e. you’re charged every time you cross the border)
• It’s a one off charge (i.e. you pay a sum in advance)

5. The fuel policy

When it comes to fuel, the best way to rent a car in Ireland is to choose the ‘Collect Full, Return Full’ policy.

If you don’t, you’ll be hit with excess fuel costs when the rental company tops it up themselves. You’ll  always  find a petrol/diesel station close to your drop-off location.

6. The toll policy

Ireland has a number of toll roads scattered across the country. All but one is your standard toll – i.e. you approach the toll and you can pay with cash or card.

Dublin’s M50 motorway is what’s known as a ‘free-flow tolling system’ . So, there isn’t a toll booth – your car reg is recorded and a charged is placed against it.

Some Ireland car rentals come with a ‘toll tag’ which covers this charge, but you need to check the Ts&Cs.

7. The transmission (i.e. manual vs automatic)

The majority of rental cars in Ireland are manual (AKA ‘shift’).

Now, while automatic cars are available from most companies, they’re not in wide supply .

If you can only drive an automatic, make sure that you book well in advance to avoid disappointment and hefty rental fees.

8. Airport collection fees

Yep, if you’re renting a car in Dublin Airport there’s a charge of €22 (cost may change).

This won’t be listed in the fee that you’re quoted online – it’s added when you pick up the car and it’s payable upon arrival at the airport.

9. Clarity on what’s been paid and what’s left to pay

When you’re booking your rental online, BE VERY CLEAR on what’s included in the price you’re paying online and WHAT STILL HAS TO BE PAID when you arrive at the counter on the day.

Personally, I tend to go for the ‘pre-paid’ option (i.e. paying in advance).

The only unknown then is how much of a security deposit will be held on your card.

10. Understanding the extras

The cost of extras can make renting a car in Ireland very expensive.

This is where you need to be savvy with your research phase – get out a pen and paper/spreadsheet and compare the different costs .

For example, adding a car seat could cost you an extra €40 while adding an additional driver could cost twice that.

Step 5: What to do when collecting your car hire in Ireland

It’s at this point that, if you didn’t thoroughly review the Ts&Cs of your booking, that you can be hit with unexpected fees that’ll ensure your trip is started off on the wrong note.

Here are some other things to do when picking up your car hire in Ireland:

1. Inspect the car in detail

One of two things will happen when you’re handed the keys to the car.

• Most likely: You’ll be given a few pages detailing the rental agreement and explaining the damage present on the car
• Occasionally happens: The person dealing with your booking will accompany you to your car.

If you’ve been handed a sheet that has a diagram that shows the damage on the car, verify that it’s all correct. Then ensure that there’s no unaccounted for damage INSIDE OR OUT.

2. Take photos

For added insurance when renting a car in Ireland, take out your phone and photograph all damage that’s currently inside and outside of the car.

This ensures that there’s no issue when you’re dropping the car back.

3. Who ya gonna call

Hopefully you’ll have no issues with your car hire in Ireland, but I’ve heard of countless  breakdowns and accidents, both minor and major, over the years.

It’s worth knowing exactly who to call in each situation. If someone has been injured, call the Gardaí (the Irish police) on 999 or 112.

4. Fuel type

Hopefully this goes without saying, but you need to be clear about whether the car takes petrol or diesel.

Now, the chances are they’ll have a sticker with ‘D’ or ‘P’ above the tank to indicate petrol or diesel.

Keep in mind that many Ireland car rental insurance policies don’t cover you sticking the wrong fuel in the rental.

Step 6: What to do when dropping off your rental

The final step in our renting a car in Ireland guide is the drop-off and it’s worth being vigilant to the very end.

I’ve heard of PLENTY of people that have dropped a vehicle back to one of the Irish car rental companies only to discover a random charge on their card weeks later.

1. Checking the car

A member of the rental company will check the rental car over inside and out for any damage that wasn’t present when you picked it up.

If the employee disputes something that was already there when you collected the car, whip out your phone and show them the picture you took upon collection.

Keep in mind that the condition of the vehicle needs to be confirmed by the employee and signed. Ensure that you get a receipt before leaving.

2. Returning the car outside of working hours

If you have to drop your car back outside of normal working hours, check with the company in advance to ensure you’re fully aware of the process.

There is usually a dedicated area where you have to leave the car.

Any time that I have to do this, I take a picture of the car in the designated drop off area just in case something happens to it after I’ve left it off.

3. Keep an eye on your credit card

I’ve a friend who rented a car in Dublin for two days recently. All was fine with the car and he dropped it back after his trip.

Two weeks later he noticed a random charge on one of his credit cards from the car hire company. When he queried it, he was told it was for tyre damage.

Luckily, he had a video that he took before he drove the car that showed scuff marks on the alloy. They eventually accepted that he didn’t cause the damage and refunded him.

I’ve had either first or second hand experience with 3 to 4 of the main car rental companies in Ireland, and the experiences were all fairly similar.

Hi! Thanks a lot for this incredible guide! Even if I rented a car in other countries, Ireland is another world! Hi, coming the US via England, I rented a car from Budget at the Knock airport and dropped it off in Galway. I did get the rental insurance letter from American Express in advance, that process is automated so you can get it and print it quickly. The guy at the rental car counter said he REALLY appreciated having the letter, said he gets into a lot of arguments with folks. So the rental experience was a breeze for us. Worked out to $66 a day for four days.

I got the manual transmission, but wouldn't recommend that unless you are very comfortable with a stick shift. Using the left hand was odd, I caught myself reaching for the shift lever with the right hand a couple of times. The first hours were nervous, but after a day or two my brain had accepted driving on the left. Read up on how to navigate roundabouts if you aren't familiar with that.

Highly recommend touring the Wild Atlantic Way by car, great way to tour the countryside and be able to stop at random places and soak in the scenery. Absolutely worth the expense.

Fortunately refunds were forthcoming and now we were once again planning our visit quite confidently, until "hiring a rental car in Ireland" presented its ugly head. If you are over 75 it seems you need a Doctor's Certificate as well as Driving License etc but this is not explained properly by the rental companies.

Renting a car in the Netherlands can take you off the beaten path to stops such as Gouda and Dijon.

One of the first words you should learn in France or Belgium is “grève,” the French word for “strike,” because you’ll often hear it in the local news.

During the past few years, strikes have consistently interrupted European airlines and rail services. Instead of being vulnerable to tricky cross-country connections, travelers should consider renting a car. That’s even more appropriate if you’re in a small group of people who enjoy going off the beaten path.

As Americans head to Europe over the summer, many will try to fit several countries into an itinerary. A road trip allows you more flexibility and access to places that are harder to connect by rail or plane. Even for locals, traveling by car can be a fun alternative.

“I’m all about driving, flexibility, and accessibility,” says Jane Bertch, the founder of the Paris-based cooking school La Cuisine Paris and author of “The French Ingredient .” “Stay off the highways and stop by small villages for lunch and shopping. I love buying food and wine as souvenirs, and not having to deal with baggage on a train or plane is a plus.”

Renting a car in Europe

If you’re used to driving in the United States, driving in Europe may seem more relaxed. Road rules are mostly the same in continental Europe — except the United Kingdom and Ireland, where you drive on the left side.

Keep in mind that the speed limits are in kilometers per hour, not miles. Even after almost 10 years of living in Europe, I still have to do the math in my head. The easiest way to figure it out is to multiply the number by .60; it’s .62, to be exact, but you should go with the easier math to avoid speeding tickets (they will find you!). The Netherlands and Belgium have speed cameras that capture the average speed of a trip rather than one moment on the road, so set your cruise control and don’t worry about the people zipping by you.

Renting a car is straightforward in Western Europe. Most of the big brands in the United States — Hertz, Budget, Avis, Enterprise — are available at most large airports. I stick to those brands because I can earn my airline miles and address any issues at the corporate level back home.

As for driving licenses, I’ve rented cars from Austria to Greece and have never been asked for an International Driving Permit . If you’re pulled over, however, having one could save you a ticket. They’re only $20 with an easy application process via AAA.

Roads and parking spots are often much smaller in most of Europe than in the United States, so be careful about how large of a car you rent. You can get a small SUV, but I wouldn’t recommend anything larger than a Volkswagen Tiguan or a BMW X3. Also, if you can’t drive a manual, specify an automatic car in your booking, as manual vehicles are still pretty standard across Europe.

Electric vehicles are more common in Western Europe than in the United States, and there are plenty of charging stations along the highways, parking garages and most urban neighborhoods. If you choose to rent an electric car, plan your stops around your charging time. That’s also an excellent way to explore a small town. Grab lunch and go for a little stroll while your car charges. Use apps like PlugShare to find charging stations, which display availability and the type of chargers supported.

Google Maps works just as well in Europe as in the United States, so it’s an excellent tool for road trips. Another tip is to pay for parking in advance when visiting the big cities. For example, when I drive to the Netherlands, I use a website called Parkbee . Amsterdam is notorious for its high parking fees, but I still find parking spaces for 20 euros a day. In France, Onepark offers a similar service.

Start from Amsterdam

After a few days strolling along the city’s quaint canals and admiring the Dutch masters at the Rijksmuseum, pick up your rental car at Schiphol Airport and head south to Brussels, which should take less than three hours.

Stop in Gouda, Netherlands

Gouda is known for its cheese but also for its history; the city is more than 750 years old. The charming city center, warm stroopwafels, and enticing cheese present a more laid-back side to Holland without the mass tourism of Amsterdam ’s city center.

Look up the many kaasboerderij (cheese farms) on the outskirts of Gouda. One of my favorites is Kaasboerderij De Twee Hoeven .

Stop in Brussels

Brussels is known for its art nouveau architecture, gastronomy and, of course, chocolates.

A stop at the Grand-Place (where you can also find several parking garages) is a must. Afterward, walk to the Sablon, known for its art galleries, chocolate shops and weekend antique market.

With your car parked, explore the city by metro, tram or bus and head to Saint-Gilles and Ixelles. These local favorite neighborhoods are teeming with cozy cafes and a bustling restaurant scene where you can eat Belgian classics, a pot teeming with mussels with a side of frites at La Quinciallerie , or a crispy gray shrimp croquette at Fernand Obb . You can also explore global cuisines ranging from Vietnamese to Congolese cuisine, reflecting the city’s diverse population.

Stop in Dinant, Belgium

Make some time for the charming, well-preserved medieval city in Wallonia in southern Belgium. Take a boat ride along the Meuse River with a view of the rolling hills of the Ardennes, go for a tour of the Citadel of Dinant , and stock up on chocolates and artisanal local cheeses.

Stop in Reims, France

It takes less than three hours to drive from Brussels to the Champagne region. Make your base at Reims, where you can walk or take public transportation via bus or tram to many champagne producers.

Having a car will allow you to explore other picturesque Champagne-producing towns like Aÿ-Champagne, Bouzy and Avize, as many of these small towns either don’t have train stations or only have limited schedules. These towns have independent producers whose products are hard to find outside of France. Just make sure someone agrees to be a designated driver.

“If you are on a wine trip, be sure to spit as the legal limit is equivalent to .05 percent blood alcohol content (the standard in the USA is .08 percent). Depending on the size of the pour and your size, even one drink could put you above the limit,” says Caro Feely, co-founder and director of Chateau Feely , a winery and guesthouse in the south of France.

Stop in Lyon, France

Known as the gastronomic capital of France, Lyon, with its cozy taverns known as Bouchon Lyonnaise, serving local fare such as pates and sausage-stuffed brioche and Cote du Rhone wines, has an entirely different feel than Paris with a less touristy vibe and restaurants and bars catering to the home crowd. Just as in other cities, there are plenty of parking garages where you can secure a spot in advance.

Lovers of French cuisine should include a stop to the Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, a food fall with several restaurants, for oyster shuckers, decadent cheeses, charcuterie and wine.

For stunning city views, catch a funicular to the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, a UNESCO world heritage site.

Stop in Dijon, France

Known for its mustard, Burgundy’s capital has a picturesque city center worth a stop. With its cobblestone streets and gothic architecture, it’s a good place for a petit pause.

Stop in Paris

You could return your rental car to Lyon and take the TGV (fast train) to Paris, which will take two hours. But if you’re looking for more adventure, drive back to Paris and head to Auxerre, a small city in the Burgundy region, for a petit pause.

Also, take advantage of the car to go to landmarks on the outskirts of Paris, like Versailles or Parc du Bois, with a bit more ease. The latter is the home of Fondation Louis Vuitton, which not only houses magnificent artworks but also Frank Gehry-designed buildings and gardens that are just as impressive.

Drivers expect to spend about $2 per mile on average, or about $1,000 on road trips this summer, according to an Experian survey.

Summertime — warm weather, t-shirts, concerts in the park… and budget-friendly road trips. Errr, not so fast. Although drivers plan to travel about 500 miles this summer, according to a new survey by Experian , motorists expect to shell out some serious cash. The survey found that 20% of motorists say they will spend between $1000 to $1,499, even though their average budget is only $1,007. Only 3% plan to spend $100 or less.

“Consumers may not have much control over some of the costs of their vacation, but there are many ways to prepare in advance so that they can save more,” says Rod Griffin, senior director of consumer education and advocacy for Experian . “I always suggest consumers make a budget before finalizing their vacation plans, then research costs for different accommodations, activities and experiences, and book those accordingly.”

Additionally, Griffin suggests leveraging credit cards to earn reward points and discounts to apply toward vacation plans. Check out the best credit cards for gas and EV charging rewards .

How far will you go?

Only about one in nine road-trippers plan to drive more than 1,000 miles, with the average planned road trip mapped out to about half that, or 512 miles — just enough for motorists driving gas-powered cars to refuel at least once. The average electric car gets about 250 miles on one charge , according to the UC Davis Plug-In Hybrid and Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Research Center. 

Of course, some EVs will get less mileage, and some can get 350 miles or more. Many hybrid models can travel more than 500 miles on a full tank based on the results of Car and Driver’s 75-mph highway fuel-economy test .

Top three road trip expenses

Not surprisingly, most drivers say they expect gasoline (76%) and lodging (61%) to be the biggest expenses on their road trip, and another 47% say food will be one of their big-ticket items this summer. 

The national average price of regular unleaded gasoline slipped to $3.47 per gallon in June 2024 after peaking at almost $3.70 earlier this year. That’s good news for summer travel. In fact, indications are that gas prices are expected to be below average this summer as a result of the U.S. releasing some of its fuel reserves, but they are not likely to fall below $3 per gallon. Honestly, unless you're driving an electric car this summer, you’re looking for ways to save on gas .

Other anticipated costs

Other expected costs while on the road are entertainment (18%), car maintenance (10%) and vehicle rental (6%). Understandably, 15% of those surveyed also mentioned insurance premium costs for their own vehicle or, if they rent, the additional coverage they'll either use or purchase for their rental. Insurance costs have climbed more than 26% since 2023. As such, they have become a constant pain point among many motorists, even on vacation.

Griffin points out that, “consumers can consider splitting costs with friends or family members, sharing hotel rooms and packing food instead of eating out at restaurants for all of their meals to help cut back on some of these expenses.”  

Test drive insurance premiums

As reported by Kiplinger, car insurance rates will likely remain elevated until 2025 , according to Bankrate’s True Cost of Auto Insurance Report . "So, if you think this summer’s road trip may break your budget, Griffin adds, "it may be time to compare car insurance quotes online from top auto insurance carriers."
