river safaris zimbabwe

Halsted Safaris' journey began some years ago when a family’s love and passion for the African wilderness drew them to an area called the Zambezi Valley.

The father had spent much time in the area and told exciting tales of this magical place to his children.

Throughout their life those stories remained so prominent that the brother and sister in 2008 set out on their own safari adventure.

Much to their delight it was true, the legends their father had spoken of were true, as the Zambezi Valley remained a utopia, vigorously alive with pure and natural wild wonder. It is a utopia for the African wilderness as species such as elephant, lion, buffalo, plains game, wild dog and much more thrive naturally in these conditions. The Zambezi River herself inhabits a wide variety of aquatic wildlife, offers incredible birding and in this area is particularly known for the infamous tiger fish and river fishing adventure.

With species such as the infamous tiger fish as well as other species the lower Zambezi is a prime location for keen fisherman to experience an exciting river catch.

Island Dining

An all time favorite here at Halsted Safaris - luxury fine dining, set on an exquisite Zambezi Island.

For the avid bird watchers there is an impressive assortment of bird species along the Zambezi.

Game Viewing

Our osprey river boats and luxury pontoon make it easy to view Spectacular sightings of wildlife from the river.

Zambezi River Cruise

A truly wonderful experience cruising along the Zambezi in our exclusive luxury pontoon, the most comfortable way to explore and discover the magic of the African bush.

The camp itself sleeps a maximum of 8 people.

There are 4 en suite chalets, each chalet accommodates 2 people and has its own private balcony with a spectacular view overlooking the wonders of the river.

There is a gorgeous swimming pool, main dining and entertainment area, braai area, an inside and outside kitchen area, as well as beautifully manicured and lush green gardens.

The camp runs on solar lighting and all chalets are fitted with solar geysers and solar ceiling fans which operate in the evenings.

There is WiFi available in camp on a pay as you go system.

River Horse Expeditions was historically one of the first canoe safari operators in the Lower Zambezi wilderness and we have an exceptional safety record. We put this down to two key ingredients... respect and knowledge.

Zimbabwe Safaris

At the wild heart of southern Africa, land-locked Zimbabwe is adored by those who venture across her lands.

Zimbabwe

The joyful warmth of the people, the breath-taking diversity of the landscapes and – thanks to many of Africa’s top safari guides – the sheer proximity of the wildlife make Zimbabwe a favourite country for many of our more experienced African travellers. Bordered by two mighty rivers, the Zambezi to the north and the Limpopo to the south, and studded with great lakes, mean water-based activities often feature in Zimbabwean trips. A host of beautiful riverside retreats make brilliant bases for laid-back game viewing, serene canoe trips and even white-water rafting. Wildly Beautiful, Mana Pools National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site long famed for its Zambezi canoe trails and first-class walking safaris. Few places in Africa can offer such up-close-and-personal elephant and wild dog encounters. Be it from Mana or Victoria Falls, cruising the Zambezi, past dense pods of hippos and giant crocodiles, marvelling at kingfishers and pausing only as elephant drink at the water’s edge, is perhaps the calmest safari experience we offer. Between the rivers, Zimbabwe’s inland plateau is dotted with rounded granite kopjes (outcrops), rugged mountains and lush forests. Close to Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park is game-rich, blissfully quiet and blessed with simple camps run by exceptional guides. Huge herds of elephants and buffalo roam this enormous protected area, ranging from the Kalahari sands of the Botswana border through woodland valleys and high over granite hills. Like the country at large, Hwange is scenically spectacular and strikingly varied. For many, a trip to Zimbabwe ends in style at Victoria Falls. Here, the mighty Zambezi, at two kilometres wide, drops a formidable 100m as a curtain of water. Beside the Falls, paths snake through lush cloud-forest as rainbows piece the spray, affording jaw-dropping views into the swirling cataracts.

When to go to Zimbabwe

Our month-by-month guide to the best time for visiting Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe in January

January falls in the middle of Zimbabwe’s rainy season and is the wettest month of the year. Heavy rainfall occurs most days, flooding seasonal rivers and waterholes, with the occasional sunny spell. With the high levels of precipitation the wildlife in the national parks becomes widely dispersed, taking advantage of the abundance of food and water, and is easily hidden by the thick, green bush. While sightings of larger animals are possible, and many species drop their young at this time, game viewing is often sparse. However, many migratory species of bird arrive in Zimbabwe making it a peak month for birding. The rains create incredibly sticky mud in Mana Pools National Park, preventing access and causing camps to close for the season. The majority of the camps in other parks remain open, with low rates attracting a smattering of visitors.

  • Peak of the rainy season: hot & humid with heavy rain most days
  • Bush exceptionally thick and green, with poor game viewing
  • Species such as impala drop their young
  • All camps in Mana Pools closed
  • Very few visitors, and low rates at open camps

A time to avoid if possible

Weather in January

Zimbabwe in February

February remains well within Zimbabwe’s rainy season. Although total rainfall drops, relatively short thunderstorms can still be expected most afternoons. On the plus side, there is a greater chance of some sunshine in-between. Much of the country remains waterlogged, closing access to Mana Pools and severely restricting walking safaris in other parks. While game drives and canoeing remain an option, the abundance of water disperses animals, and thick grass can make it difficult to spot larger species, but birding remains excellent. Conversely, this is a great time of year to view the landscape, and is excellent for photographers. Sporadic cloud cover and clear air can make for some spectacular sunsets too, particularly over Lake Kariba and the Zambezi River where the reflections off the water add to the beauty.

  • Generally wet with frequent thunderstorms & hot humid days
  • Poor wildlife viewing due to dispersed animals & thick bush
  • Clear air, green landscapes & exceptional sunsets
  • Very few visitors & low rates at camps that are open

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in February

Zimbabwe in March

March is the final month of Zimbabwe’s rainy season, when the rains start to trail off and sunny days become the norm. However, some days the clouds can still build, breaking into thunderstorms in the afternoon. Mana Pools remains closed throughout the month but the majority of camps in Hwange, Matusadona and Gonarezhou remain open. Here, the landscape is green and alive, with migrant species of birds taking advantage of the abundant insect life. Larger animals remain elusive though, and walking safaris remain restricted. By this time of year, the rains have normally trickled down to the Zambezi River and the flow of water over the Victoria Falls starts to increase, but without kicking up too much spray to obscure the views.

  • Last month of the rainy season: hot, humid days with occasional storms
  • Lush vegetation means good birding, but poor game viewing
  • Views of the Victoria Falls improve
  • Open camps have few visitors & low rates

Weather in March

Zimbabwe in April

April marks the end of Zimbabwe’s rainy season and the end of summer. Clear skies are the norm, with just the occasional shower. Temperatures start to drop, failing to reach 30ºC most days and dropping down to around 10ºC at night. As the rain fades the landscape starts to dry out. While the vegetation remains thick and green, the soil in Mana Pools dries enough for camps to open, and the only camps to remain closed are the most remote bushcamps in Hwange. Although viewing of larger animals remains tricky, the improved weather starts to draw back visitors, as do prices significantly below those in the peak season. The Zambezi River and flow of water over the Victoria Falls is at its highest, although large amounts of spray diminish views of the waterfall itself.

  • Transitional period, with much lower rainfall & falling temperatures
  • Wildlife is still dispersed & hard to see, but sightings improving
  • Views of the Victoria Falls often obscured by spray
  • Camps in Mana Pools open
  • Visitors start to return & camps increase their rates

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in April

Zimbabwe in May

The first month in the dry season, May is also Zimbabwe’s first month of winter. If the rains are particularly late in a given year, you may catch the odd shower, but you can expect clear and sunny days the majority of the time. While it’s warm in the daytime, temperatures drop to single digits at night, so bring a warm jumper and gloves for early morning drives. With the rain having cleared the air, the sky is bright blue, and it’s the best time of year for photography. Even the most remote camps in Zimbabwe are now open. With the lack of rainfall, vegetation dies back significantly, and seasonal rivers return to sand. Not only does this open up the possibility of walking safaris, but wildlife viewing becomes much more reliable.

  • Start of the dry season, with milder days and cold nights
  • Game viewing significantly improves as vegetation dies back
  • Vegetation starts to turn from green to brown
  • Best time for photography with crystal clear air
  • Visitors start to return; all camps open & rates increasing

A very good time to visit

Weather in May

Zimbabwe in June

During June you can virtually be guaranteed of dry and sunny days, although temperatures continue to drop, and can get close to freezing at night in Hwange National Park. Jumpers, jackets and gloves are strongly recommended for early mornings and evenings. The opportunities for wildlife viewing improve throughout the month as the landscape rapidly dries, and the animals start to gather on the banks of the Zambezi River and around Hwange’s waterholes. Water levels in the Zambezi River start to drop, reducing the amount of spray kicked up at the Victoria Falls and greatly improving visibility, but still allowing a full curtain of water to cascade over the edge.

  • Middle of winter, with night-time temperatures close to freezing
  • Game viewing significantly improves throughout the month
  • Views of the Victoria Falls are at their best
  • Noticeable increase in visitor numbers
  • Camps considerably more expensive

Weather in June

Zimbabwe in July

July sits in the middle of Zimbabwe’s dry season. Although it’s warm at midday, temperatures are generally cold and in Hwange it’s been known to drop below freezing at night, with the lower-altitude Mana Pools feeling a bit warmer. With wildlife clustering around the few remaining waterholes, sparse vegetation, and some of the best views of the Victoria Falls, this is one of the most popular times to travel, with camps charging peak season rates to reflect this. That said, visitor numbers to the country in general remain low, and outside of the Victoria Falls it’s rare for any areas to feel crowded.

  • Middle of the dry season with almost no chance of rain
  • Clear sunny days, but very cold nights
  • Wildlife viewing good; game drives and walking safaris unrestricted
  • Views of the Victoria Falls at their best
  • Camps charging peak season rates

Weather in July

Zimbabwe in August

While August is the end of winter and temperatures are starting to creep up, mornings and nights are still cold, and game drives in open vehicles can feel particularly chilly. Well into the dry season, the landscapes will have mostly transformed from green to brown and wildlife viewing in Zimbabwe’s national parks is approaching its best. Due to dust kicked up into the atmosphere and smoke from bush fires you may start to notice a haze on the horizon, but this doesn’t significantly impact photography. August is one of the most expensive months, and the pleasant weather and decent game viewing attracts lots of visitors. While the national parks rarely feel crowded, Victoria Falls accommodation can sell out a year in advance.

  • Warm, sunny days but cold mornings & nights; almost no chance of rain
  • Wildlife viewing nearly at its best
  • Landscape turns brown, & an atmospheric haze develops
  • All camps charging peak season rates

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in August

Zimbabwe in September

Temperatures in September rarely drop below 15ºC, but are yet to reach the oppressive highs of summer. It will normally have been five months since the last drop of rain, so antelope and elephants cluster around whatever water remains, with predators never too far away. The landscape is very brown, and the haze building on the horizon takes some of the colour out of the sky, so while animal subjects are plentiful, the background is not ideal for photography. The combination of incredible wildlife viewing, hot and sunny weather, and cheaper flights outside of the school holidays make this the most popular time of year to travel, and availability at the camps can become limited up to a year in advance.

  • The best month for weather, with a pleasantly warm temperature range
  • One of the best months for game viewing
  • Victoria Falls starting to dry but still impressive on Zimbabwean side
  • All camps are charging peak season rates
  • Most popular time to travel, & space can be limited

Weather in September

Zimbabwe in October

October is the last month of the dry season with little chance of rain but building humidity. While the higher elevation of Hwange National Park limits temperatures to the 30s Celsius, they can easily top 40ºC in Mana Pools. With little vegetation or water, wildlife is drawn to the few remaining water sources and viewing is at its best; visitors who brave the heat can be rewarded with some exceptional sightings, although haze in the air diminishes photos. Maximum visibility and dense wildlife concentrations can also make for very rewarding walking safaris, although the heat can make them uncomfortable. Water levels in the Zambezi at the Victoria Falls drop significantly, and large stretches of the waterfall are a dry cliff-face – although it never dries completely. Camp rates remain at their peak, but visitor numbers drop as people avoid the heat.

  • Last month of the dry season; very hot with building humidity
  • Wildlife viewing at its very best
  • Dust & smoke in the air diminish photographic opportunities
  • Victoria Falls starting to look very dry
  • Camp rates remain at their peak

Weather in October

Zimbabwe in November

November is a transitionary period, with high temperatures and humidity. While they can’t be predicted with any precision, the first rains normally arrive halfway through the month, in the form of thunderstorms lasting a few hours each day. Early November is a popular time to travel as the camps drop their rates, so if you’re lucky you can get peak-season game viewing at low-season rates. This is a gamble though as if the rains do arrive, animals are no longer limited to a few dangerous waterholes and will disperse into the bush. While all the camps in Mana Pools intend to remain open, the rains can make the airstrips unusable so you may find yourself moved to a different park, a risk that increases through the month.

  • Typically the start of the rains in Zimbabwe
  • Temperatures & humidity levels remain high
  • Wildlife viewing rapidly diminishes as the rains arrive
  • Camps remain open, but risk early closure in Mana Pools
  • Much cheaper time to travel as camps drop their rates

Weather in November

Zimbabwe in December

By December the rainy season has begun in earnest; this is one of the wettest months in Zimbabwe, with heavy thunderstorms most afternoons and occasionally continuous rain for a couple of days. While temperatures start to cool down the high levels of humidity can make the heat feel more oppressive. With the rains comes an explosion of green growth, and the dust and smoke are washed out of the air. The resulting scenery – with the occasional bright blue skies – can be fantastic for photographers. Thick vegetation and plentiful water makes viewing of larger animals tricky, but with migratory species arriving the birding is at its best. All camps in Mana Pools and the remote Hwange camps close, with those remaining open charging their lowest rates.

  • One of the wettest months in Zimbabwe
  • High temperatures & levels of humidity
  • Wildlife viewing poor, but birding good
  • Lush green landscapes & clear air; great for landscape photography

The Magic of a River Safari Through Zimbabwe

By Heather Greenwood Davis

An aerial of a river.

From my seat on the pontoon boat, I squeal in excitement at the splinter of gray I see in the distance. I almost missed it, despite the attempts of my fellow travelers to aim my gaze, but the flapping ears give him away.

Tucked up on the hill, deep in a green cluster of Zambezi teak trees, his telltale wrinkled grey skin and sturdy legs at first seemed like just another tree in the bush. But once those ears flap, there’s no denying the majesty of an African elephant.

From his perch at the front of the boat on the Chobe River , our guide and captain Emmanuel Maruza, doesn’t attempt to mask his own excitement. “Look at that,” he says, mostly to himself as he maneuvers the boat closer to shore. “Amazing. Amazing.”

It is day three of a nine-day unforgettable African river adventure. The ambitious CroisiEurope itinerary takes a maximum of 16 guests across four countries: South Africa , Namibia , Botswana, and Zimbabwe. In each, we spend time on land with the people and animals. But in three of the four, there’s a bonus: time spent cruising the continents’ scenic and vital waterways.

Having the opportunity to explore from both land and water makes booking with CroisiEurope appealing, and it’s the European cruise company’s first foray into Africa. Most luxury African safari operators whisk guests away to a plush lodge and then offer twice-a-day open-jeep safari rollouts into the wild. CroisiEurope’s RV Zimbabwean Dream itinerary offers a similar lodge stay (it owns two lavish properties on the edge of the Zambezi River where Namibia borders Botswana), but takes it a step further with multiple trips out on water safaris and a three-night stay on one of two intimate houseboats in Zimbabwe. The advantages of exploring the countries by both land and water are almost immediately evident.

On the land tour of Chobe National Park in Botswana, animals are everywhere: Lions lazing in the tall grass on the roadside, giraffes gracefully crossing the savannah, warthogs bumbling past Cape buffalo who seem oblivious to the Oxpeckers on their own backs.

You don’t have to get on the water to see the wildlife. There are more than 50,000 elephants—my favorite wildlife sighting—that freely roam in and out of the fenceless Chobe National Park, alone. But there’s no question that cruising the region’s rivers will amplify the experience.

The rivers and lakes we traverse are calm. Small ripples across the glassy surface and the occasional bubbles around us are reminders that life—crocodiles and hippos mostly—lie beneath. Reeds and mangroves line the shores on the rides out from the lodge, barely moving in the absence of heavy breeze despite the birds nimbly balanced on their tips. And it’s not long before the gentle hum of the motor becomes almost meditative, and our small group settles into a quiet as we watch hippos yawn and grunt from the land and the water in reverent silence.

The animals look different from the water, too. The perspective change means that instead of looking down on them from the height of the jeep, you’re gazing up or across. Kudus seem larger, hippos more foreboding. And you’re encountering them in places that feel almost intimate: Elephants bathing in the shallows of the river amongst a field of water lilies, crocs sunning on the shore and then slithering into the water beneath the boat. You feel smaller on the water. More vulnerable.

It's a feeling that stays with us when we eventually move to CroisiEurope’s luxury houseboat in Zimbabwe. There, we take turns boarding smaller boats, perfect for sundowner cruises, scooting up to reedy mounds to listen to the birds as the sun sets or zigzagging through sun-bleached Mopane trees on afternoon fishing jaunts. And with no other boats in sight, early risers share the morning with the animals as they start their day. I watch hippos shake the sleep off their backs and head back to the water, and elephant moms nurse their babies and meander the short grass just beyond the shore.

The trip is not all slow cruising and shoreline searching. In South Africa, we trace the life of Nelson Mandela through the Apartheid Museum, on Impalila Island in Namibia we walk the villages with a resident guide, and in Zimbabwe we take in the stunning Victoria Falls by foot and helicopter. Emotional moments abound on this trip and adrenaline is in no short supply.

The moments are all incredible in their own right, but for me the highlight remains that first glimpse on day three and the surprise that followed. As it turned out, the elephant I saw wasn’t alone.

The whistle of tree branches being pulled and broken gives them away. Three adult elephants and a few babies come forward toward us. Our boat backs up to give them space, but we remain close enough to hear them slurp and splash as they drink and dip in the water.

When it’s time to go, we erupt in a smattering of giggles and chatter. A shared moment on a trip where magic seems to flow as easily as the waters beneath us.

After breakfast, we’ll meet up with professional guides who will escort us to Wild Horizons Elephant Sanctuary and Orphanage, an elephant rehabilitation center adjacent to the lodge. At this animal rescue center, you’ll be able to get up close with rescued elephants.

Later in the day, we’ll head to Victoria Falls for a walking tour and/or a helicopter ride over this spectacular natural wonder (available at an additional cost).

Back at The Elephant Lodge, we’ll gather in the main lodge for another delicious chef-prepared meal and perhaps a sundowner by the fire pit. (B, L, D)

Days 3 – 4

Today, our adventure takes us to Canoe Camp along the Upper Zambezi. This portable riverside camp has spacious canvas tents, cots with duvets, a large riverside dining area, flush toilets, and even a hot shower.

Upon arrival, we’ll do an orientation and meet the rest of the crew. This river-based African safari utilizes boats that are more akin to inflatable kayaks than canoes. Easy to paddle and very stable, our two-person “kayaks” are an ideal vessel to explore the Upper Zambezi and its network of coves and shoots.

As we maneuver downstream, the low-stress rapids provide a bit of excitement, but the wildlife is the main highlight of this adventure. It will be the dry season when many animals typically come down to the river to drink. Elephants, zebras, bushbuck, kudu, Cape buffalo, ubiquitous baboons, impala, and giraffes are all common sightings. The bird life is an ornithologist’s dream come true, and we might even get a glimpse of a lion, leopard, or rare wild dog. In some places, the river gets up to a mile wide and channels around sandbanks and reed islands. These are the best places to find hippos and crocodiles.

At dusk, we’ll gather around and sit high on the bank overlooking the river. We’ll hear the deep, low-decibel grumbles and burps of the hippos as they call out to announce their nighttime grazing rituals. A few waking lions might be heard, as well. The bush will be alive with sound as night falls and we inch closer to the fire.

Overnighting on the banks of the Zambezi, you should be ready for anything. Trips in the past have been woken up early by large herds of elephants crossing the river and coming right through camp. (B, L, D)

Days 5 – 6

Old Drift Lodge

After a few days in the bush, we will paddle our inflatable boats right to Old Drift Lodge. During our stay at this opulent lodge, you’ll be able to choose from a menu of activities each day. All-inclusive options include morning or afternoon game drives, a walking safari, and a riverboat cruise, all in Victoria Falls National Park.

There are also a number of additional activities available at an added cost, like the chance to plunge into the Devil’s Pools and peer over the edge of Victoria Falls or an exciting canopy tour. Those who prefer to slow down and rejuvenate for a day can book private spa treatments in the comfort of your suite.

In the evenings, we will gather for traditional chef-prepared African dishes prepared on-site and enjoy a sundowner around the fire pit to discuss upcoming plans for the next day. (B, L, D)

Days 7 – 9

Hwange National Park Luxury Safari

This morning, we’ll take a short flight to Hwange National Park. Upon arrival at the airstrip, our talented safari guides will meet us for a game drive that will end at the decadent Somalisa Acacia Camp.

Hwange National Park is known as one of the most biodiverse game parks in all of Africa. Home to more than 40,000 elephants—one of the largest populations on the continent—as well as lions, leopards, cheetahs, hippos, Cape buffalo, and many other species, this park offers an incredible and crowd-free African safari experience.

From Somalisa, we’ll set out each day on a 4×4 wildlife safari or bush walk led by professional guides in search of Africa’s Big Five and other resident wildlife like white rhino, zebra, giraffes, and the rare and endangered roan antelope.

In the evening, we’ll return to our elegant and timeless bush camp. Retreat to your private deck for a reflective moment, sip a gin and tonic in the inviting lounge area or take a refreshing dip in the pool—all offering a front-row seat to the evening wildlife show that will unfold before us in the vast open savannah. We’ll join together each night for decadent chef-prepared meals and delightful conversation around the fireplace. (B, L, D)

After breakfast, we’ll head out on our last game drive in Hwange National Park before heading to the airstrip to fly back to Victoria Falls.

Tonight, we’ll stay at the Batonka Guest Lodge, a quaint hotel in town to prepare for our Zambezi River rafting adventure the following morning. This is a great opportunity to do some souvenir shopping and check out the nightlife in this bustling tourist mecca and Unesco World Heritage Site.

Days 11 – 12

Today, we begin our journey into the Batoka Gorge below Victoria Falls, hiking down a steep trail to meet our waiting rafts. The gorge provides a magnificent backdrop for our safety briefing before we don our high-float PFDs and practice our paddling techniques in the warm water of the river.

Our epic journey begins with “Morning Glory,” a real eye-opener, before one of the biggest commercially run rapids in the world, Class V “Stairway to Heaven.” This is a day of unparalleled fun, with rapids such as “Gulliver’s Travels” and “Midnight Diner,” which features one of the biggest waves you will see on any river. Later, we meet “The Gnashing Jaws Of Death,” a boisterous wave train.

As the canyon walls soar above us, the whitewater thrills continue with rapids like “Creamy White Buttocks” and “The Mother.” There’s nearly a rapid every mile on the upper stretch of the Zambezi, culminating with “Oblivion,” one of the most famous and exhilarating commercially-run rapids in the world. It isn’t the first wave that gets you or the second, but the third crashing wave that normally has all the photographers poised, ready to capture your big moment.

After we challenge more than 20 rapids on our first day, we’ll reach our first riverside camp, complete with tents, a dining area, and a spacious beach. Here, we meet up with the rest of our gear and baggage boaters, who will join us for the remainder of the trip downstream.

Once settled in camp, your guides will prepare a feast upon which you can celebrate your first day on the river. Relax, watch the sun disappear behind the basalt cliffs, and enjoy your first night under the stars.

After breakfast on the second day, we’ll get back on the boats. As we float further downstream, the river begins to widen, but that doesn’t mean that the rapids get any smaller. On this stretch, we’ll conquer “Open and Closed Season” and Class V “Chimamba” before our big finale through “Upper Moemba,” one of two waterfalls we’ll encounter on the final day of whitewater. The group will portage over the second waterfall as the guides line the rafts down a 30-foot vertical cliff into an eddy below.

We’ll stop at a glorious beach camp for the night within sight of the magnificent Lower Moemba Falls. Here, we can sit back and enjoy the beauty of this majestic section of the river while recounting the day’s events. (B, L, D)

On our last river day, we float to the take-out and hike out of the gorge to our waiting shuttle vehicles that will transfer us back to the Batonka Guest Lodge. Tonight, we will rendezvous for a farewell dinner and celebrate the incredible scenery and experiences of running Africa’s most famous stretch of whitewater.

Today, we’ll say goodbye to Hwange National Park, Victoria Falls, and the mighty Zambezi River. As we transfer to the airport for flights home or onward, we’ll reflect on this unique and adventurous part of the world and the remarkable people we’ve met along the way.

You’re welcome to depart at any time on the final day. We will transfer you to Victoria Falls or Livingstone for return flights home.

On the Zambezi, guides use paddle rafts with oar assist, as well as paddle rafts to challenge some of the best whitewater in the world. Helmets are required on both.

Paddle rafts with oar assist are considered the most agile boat in whitewater. The guide powers the raft with two hefty oars on a rear-mounted frame, while the crew of 4 – 8 guests paddle up front for added horsepower.

Paddle rafts are the sportiest of crafts on the Zambezi. Everybody handles a paddle while the guide steers and gives directions from the rear. Paddling together is essential to finding the right run, and teamwork begets success.

On the Zambezi Canoe Safari, the “canoes” you’ll use are akin to inflatable kayaks. Easy to paddle and very stable, the large, inflatable kayaks are an ideal vessel to explore the Upper Zambezi and its network of coves and shoots.

The Zambezi River is at its best during the dry season (between August and early November) when water levels are dropping. To complement this, these months also represent the best weather window for trips to the region. Expect it to be hot during the day. Down in the Batoka Gorge, it often ranges from 95-105°F but can get even hotter. The water temperature is a comfortable 75°F and provides welcome relief from the heat. It does cool down a little in the evenings, but nothing worth worrying about. Generally, it’s quite comfortable just sleeping under the stars!

Average temperatures in Hwange National Park are similar, and days in the park are typically warm and breezy. Rain is always possible, especially in November as the region transitions to the wet season.

The Zambezi River offers Class IV-V whitewater. We recommend people considering this trip be experienced, strong paddlers. You may find yourself swimming a Class IV-V rapid, which can be an overwhelming experience. Our guides may determine it’s in the group’s best interest to portage some rapids, depending on water levels and individual abilities.

On the Upper Zambezi, the flows are more mellow with small riffles and low-stress rapids that are fun to paddle but don’t distract from wildlife viewing opportunities.
