20 Best Beaches in Rio de Janeiro (Plus Some You Haven’t Heard Of)

' src=

Many of Brazil’s cultural symbols can be found on the beaches in Rio de Janeiro—the string bikini, colorful flip-flops, and beautiful people—and they represent an important part of the carefree, playful lifestyle.

The more mainstream beaches, such as Copacabana and Ipanema, have long been on the traveler’s bucket lists, yet Rio still has lesser-known tropical beaches that await the intrepid explorer.

Here are some of the best beaches in Rio de Janeiro, including some off-the-beaten-track beaches that will show you a different side of Rio. But before you go, make sure you pack your bag with all the necessary beach essentials and brush up on your beach safety (things to do and not to do) before you dive into our list.

20 Best Beaches in Rio De Janeiro

From east to west, Rio is renowned for its extensive beachfront, stretching across 86 km. This vast expanse offers a variety of beach options, ensuring there’s something for everyone, whether you’re a surfer, sunbather, or simply looking to escape the crowds. Dive into the best Rio de Janeiro beaches and experience the city’s stunning coastal gems.

💡 Postos in Rio de Janeiro are lifeguard stations or beach posts along the city’s coastline. The points between the boardwalk and the sand are staffed by lifeguards. Each location has toilets with showers (paid, so make sure to have some reais with you).

1. Ipanema Beach – Iconic Urban Beach

One of the best beaches in Rio de Janeiro: Ipanema Beach at sunset with a view of the Two Brothers mountains.

Let’s start with the most famous of them all, Ipanema Beach. Renowned for its local vibe and the song “ Girl from Ipanema ,” this is hands down one of my favorite stretches of beach in all of Rio. It is also famous for its clean waters, calm sea, and white sand.

The beach offers plenty of amenities, including kiosks, bars, and restaurants along its 2.6 km promenade. The most famous postos to visit include Posto 10 and Posto 9, a gay-friendly spot known as the Farme  gay  beach.

Ipanema Beach Rio also has one of the most beautiful views in all of Rio. Wherever you are, you’ll be able to enjoy the stunning and majestic view of the Moro Dois Irmaos or the Twin Brother mountains. ⭐️ Fun fact, you can also hike up to the top .

2. Arpoador Beach – Surfers’ Paradise in Downtown Rio

An aerial shot of the Arpoador rock

Although technically still part of Ipanema, Arpoador Beach is wedged in between Ipanema and Copacabana. The beach is famous for its surfing conditions, with powerful waves attracting both beginner and expert surfers. If you want to learn how to surf in Rio without driving out to Recreio, then this is the place – this is where I learned!

A picture of someone surfing in Ipanema beach Rio de Janeiro

The beach is also home to the Arpoador Rock, a large granite rock that juts out into the ocean, offering spectacular views of the coastline and the sunset. The sunsets here are incredible but come early to grab a spot, as it can get quite busy.

⚠️ A word of caution. Yes, Arpoador is generally safe.  And during the day, there is a lot of police presence in and around Ipanema and Copacabana. However, as with all the beaches, be vigilant and aware of your surroundings. And avoid walking around at night. This is especially true about walking around the Garota de Ipanema park at night time.

3. Copacabana Beach – World-Famous and Vibrant

A bird's eye view of one of the best beaches in Rio de Janeiro: Copacabana beach.

Known for its crescent-shaped coastline and lively atmosphere, Copacabana Beach Rio is a world-famous destination that attracts both tourists and locals. Its 4 km stretch of sand offers ample space for sunbathing, beach sports, and enjoying the picturesque view of Sugarloaf Mountain.

Copacabana is known for its various amenities. Nevertheless, the water isn’t as clean as it is in Ipanema. However, for water sports aficionados, you can rent a SUP at Posto 6, next to the Forte de Copacabana. The kiosks are also better here than in Ipanema.

Rio de Janiero Copacabana beach is also home to two of the most iconic Rio de Janeiro hotels on the beach. The first is Copacabana Palace Rio, and the second (and my personal favorite Copacabana beach hotel Rio de Janeiro) is The Emiliano .

4. Leme Beach – Family-Friendly and Scenic

A picture of Leme during sunset. One of the best beaches in Rio de Janeiro

Leme Beach, located in the neighborhood of the same name, is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and stunning views of Sugarloaf Mountain. This beach is an extension of Copacabana Beach and shares the same crescent-shaped coastline but offers a more tranquil (and safer) setting.

And while you’re here, make sure to walk to the end and visit Mureta do Leme. It’s not just a top-notch fishing spot; it’s also a great lunch spot where you can try some seriously delicious dishes. Oh, and the view of Copacabana and Leme Beach from here? Simply stunning.

Don’t forget to take a walk along the Caminho dos Pescadores or Fisherman’s Pathway . You’ll see locals casting their lines and soaking up the beauty of the area. Trust me, it’s a must-see spot when you’re in Leme.

5. Vermelha Beach – A Picturesque Cove

rio de janeiro beach tour

Praia Vermelha is actually in the touristy south zone of Rio yet has managed to remain a well-kept secret. That’s probably because it is one of the city’s smallest beaches.

Despite its size, it packs in a great mix of tropical beauty and fun things to do, such as stand-up paddling and kayaking. Praia Vermelha translates to ‘red beach’ in English, which is from the deep-orange, reddish sand there. It lies in a cove at the foot of Morro da Urca and is right next to the cable car that takes you up to Sugarloaf Mountain .

The beach is known for its calm waters, which is great for those looking for a leisurely, relaxing swim without needing to worry about strong currents or waves. I love to spend the day at the Praia Vermelha, moving between sunbathing and doing stand-up paddling.

To end the day, I like heading over to Bar e Restaurante Urca to grab a cold beer and some mini crab cakes and settle down on the wall next to the harbor to watch the sunset.

6. Leblon Beach – The Sophisticated Neighbor

rio de janeiro beach tour

Leblon Beach is an upscale neighborhood beach in Rio de Janeiro, located just west of Ipanema. It is known for its sophisticated atmosphere and the high-end real estate surrounding it. The beach is perfect for those who seek a more refined experience, with its pristine sands and calm waters.

The beach is equipped with the same amenities as the other beaches, along with various restaurants and bars nearby. Leblon is an upscale neighborhood, so expect higher costs.

Rio de Janeiro Leblon Beach is also a popular spot for beach volleyball and soccer, making it an ideal place to both relax and engage in some fun beach activities.

7. Vidigal Beach – Enjoy the Local Vibes

rio de janeiro beach tour

Vidigal Beach is a hidden gem, and if you want to get a real taste of the local vibes in Rio, this is the place to be. Nestled right in front of the Sheraton Hotel , Vidigal Beach is often overlooked, but it’s a charming spot that offers a unique experience.

The beach itself is relatively small, yet it has this laid-back, chill atmosphere that I absolutely love. It also caters to an eclectic mix of beachgoers, from the guests of the hotel to the locals from the Vidigal favela. Plus, the view of the ocean with the Dois Irmãos mountains in the background is just breathtaking.

And while you’re there, make sure to explore the Vidigal favela, where you can find some cool street art and even take a guided tour to learn more about the local community .

8. São Conrado Beach – Adventure Meets Relaxation

rio de janeiro beach tour

São Conrado Beach is situated in an affluent neighborhood of São Conrado in Rio de Janeiro and is known for its combination of relaxation and adventure . Surrounded by stunning mountains, this beach is a favorite spot for paragliders and hang gliders who launch from the nearby Pedra Bonita and glide down to the beach.

The beach itself is spacious, offering plenty of room to sunbathe or play beach sports. Thanks to the beach’s favorable conditions, you can also enjoy a variety of activities, such as surfing, bodyboarding, and windsurfing.

To get to this beach, you’ll need to take the L1 or L4 metro in the direction of Jardim Oceânico and get off at the stop São Conrado . From there you can walk to the beach.

⚠️ A word of caution. São Conrado is also the location of the largest favela in all of Rio, Rocinha. Walking by the favela is not an issue, just don’t wander in without a guide. Here are a couple of travel tips on visiting a favela in Rio de Janeiro (plus some recommended tours).

9. Joatinga Beach – Hidden Gem and Surf Spot

Rocks overlooking Joatinga beach

Joatinga Beach is a secluded paradise hidden within the Joá neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. This small, picturesque beach is perfect for anyone looking for a more private experience. Joatinga is inside a residential condominium , but it is still open to non-residents.

It’s a small yet striking beach. It is also considered part of one of the cleanest parts of Rio’s coastline . The bay here is great for swimming, and the small waves that break on the shore are ideal for beginner surfers.

It is one of the most popular beaches in Rio de Janeiro (the Western part), so quite a few people go there on the weekends, but it rarely gets crowded. To enjoy the day there, take plenty of water and food with you as there as it’s pretty scarce in terms of restaurants, kiosks, and bars.

10. Barra da Tijuca Beach – Longest Beach in Rio

rio de janeiro beach tour

Stretching over 11 miles (18 km), Barra da Tijuca Beach is the longest beach in Rio de Janeiro and offers a diverse range of activities and amenities. This beach is known for its excellent surf, beach volleyball, and ample space for sunbathing and relaxation.

Facilities at Barra da Tijuca Beach include numerous kiosks, beachfront restaurants, and posts. One of the best spots is Praia do Pepê , which is also within walking distance to Olegario Maciel, a street filled with restaurants. If you are looking to party in Barra, this is the best place to go.

Barra da Tijuca Beach is easily accessible by public transportation, including the Rio de Janeiro L1 and L4 metro line Jardim Oceânico stop.

11. Reserva Beach – An Ecological Sanctuary

rio de janeiro beach tour

Reserva Beach, located between Barra da Tijuca and Recreio dos Bandeirantes, is an ecological sanctuary known for its pristine coastline and rich biodiversity. The beach is part of an Environmental Protection Area, which helps preserve the local flora and fauna.

Visitors can enjoy the beach’s expansive stretch of white sand and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing. Reserva Beach has public restrooms, showers, and food kiosks for visitor convenience.

➤ Want to visit these beaches but don’t have a car? Join this Private Half-Day Barra da Tijuca, Prainha, and Joátinga Tour with a local guide. Explore hidden gems, enjoy stunning lookout points, and cap off the 5-hour adventure with Ipanema beach views. This tour also includes : Round-trip, air-conditioned transportation ➥  BOOK IT HERE

12. Praia do Recreio – A Relaxing Oasis Away from the Crowds

rio de janeiro beach tour

Praia do Recreio, situated west of Rio de Janeiro, is a fantastic destination for those looking for a quieter and more laid-back beach experience. This beautiful beach boasts clear waters and soft, golden sand and is less crowded than its famous neighbors.

Recreio is also well-known for its excellent surfing conditions, with consistent waves suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. It is also home to a number of surf hostels and pousadas for anyone looking to spend a couple of days surfing in Rio de Janeiro.

Facilities at Praia do Recreio include postos and beachside kiosks selling snacks and refreshments. You can also find a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance.

13. Praia do Secreto (Secret Beach) – A Unique Remote Experience

rio de janeiro beach tour

Still untouched by any kind of human development, Prainha is a little paradisiacal retreat to the west of Rio de Janeiro city. It’s perfect to sit back, relax and chat with a few friends or simply contemplate the beautiful scenery.

Its big, powerful waves may mean it’s not the best spot for swimming, but it does make it the most popular beach in Rio for surfing. I haven’t mastered the art of surfing yet, but Prainha is still a great place to watch the pros and enjoy the surfer-chic vibe there.

If you’re feeling hungry, then head to Mirante Prainha bar and restaurant (cash only), just a short walk away from the beach. It has some of the best seafood in town, accompanied by lovely sea views.

15. Praias Selvagens: Inferno and Funda – Rio’s Wild Beaches for Adventure Seekers

rio de janeiro beach tour

Praias Selvagens, or Wild Beaches, are a collection of five pristine and remote beaches located within the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. Two of these beautiful, secluded spots are Praia do Inferno and Praia Funda. Both beaches are perfect for adventure seekers and nature lovers who prefer a more untouched environment, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Both beaches can be accessed via a hiking trail that starts at Barra de Guaratiba. The trail takes you through lush vegetation and offers stunning panoramic views of the coastline. The beaches themselves are characterized by their fine sand, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs, making them perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring.

Keep in mind that these beaches are more remote and have no facilities, so it’s essential to bring everything you need. Also, be cautious when swimming, as currents can be strong.

💡 The sea here is surprisingly cold, even in the summer, so be prepared for a bracing dip!

16. Praia de Grumari – Another Great Spot for Sufers

rio de janeiro beach tour

The secluded Praia de Grumari beach offers a wild escape from city life. It is the perfect beach for those that are looking for a beach that seems a little wild and untouched yet still has some basic amenities like simple places to eat and drink.

Because of the facilities at Grumari, it is a popular beach among families but also among groups of younger people, such as students and young professionals. It doesn’t get crowded, but there are always a few groups of people there, so you don’t feel totally cut off from the world.

The sea can be quite unpredictable here – some days it’s great for swimming, others it’s better for surfing. Either way, there are simple outdoor showers there that are ideal for using to cool down.

BONUS: Abricó beach rio de janeiro – Rio’s Nudist Beach

Looking for the best nude beaches in Rio de Janeiro? Head to Abricó Beach, the city’s only official nudist beach. Tucked away in Grumari, this small and secluded paradise is surrounded by lush greenery and rocky cliffs, giving it a serene atmosphere.

Although nudism is not mandatory, this Rio de Janeiro nude beach is frequented by both locals and tourists who embrace the clothing-optional lifestyle. If you’re curious or just want to enjoy a liberating day under the sun, Abricó is the perfect spot.

⚠️ Remember to be respectful of fellow beachgoers and their privacy as you soak up the sun and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Now, that spring is finally coming, I can’t wait to think of beaches, seaside, and summer. Rio de Janiero has so many wonderful beaches. Praia Vermelha is my favorite one. I would really like to go there some day.

Glad to hear that! I hope you come, I’m sure you will love it!

I have been there .i am from Montego Bay ,Jamaica. Also been to Miami,Bali,French riviera,Greece and copacabana

I have heard Brazil has some of the best beaches in the world. I would love to visit the lesser-known beaches that are not packed. Praia Vermelha looks different and so cool with that mountain next to it. Hope I can visit Brazil soon 😀 Thank you for the tips 🙂

We will be so happy to have you here!

Wow, I only heard about Rio De Janeiro, but I didn’t know that it has so much to offer. I love the unspoiled beaches and looks so serene. I would love to traipse my feet here while listening to the waves kissing the coast. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

Yes! Rio de Janeiro has so much more to offer than most people think. We hope to welcome you here some day 🙂

Love this list especially that you have secluded beaches on the wild side with lots of surrounding vegetation and mountain peaks. Sounds like most of these beaches are free which is also great for budget travelers.

Your photos are making me want to go back to Rio! It is one of my favorite places and I have been twice, but not recently. It is wonderful that there are so many special hidden beaches in the city. I would like to go to these places instead of always visiting the tourist spots in Copacabana and Ipanema.

I love finding out about quiter, lesser known beaches! These all look amazing and thanks for all the useful info.

Surf Bus Beach Tour

Operating in the city since 1998, the Surf Bus Beach Tour takes surfers, cariocas, and tourists on a pleasant tour through great part of the city shore

A city postcard, the beaches are a mandatory stop for the visitors who come to Rio de Janeiro. Daily, the bus sets off from Largo do Machado, and passes through the beaches of Botafogo, Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca, Reserva, Recreio, Macumba; and goes until Mirante da Prainha. The original intention is to take surfers to the best surf spots, but it also optimizes the tour of those who want to discover and dive on the beaches of the West Zone of the city.

The bus can take 30 passengers and their surfboards, and has a minibar, stereo, TV and DVD player, where surfing films and video clips are screened. The Surf Bus Beach Tour has a trilingual attendant during the whole rout, and it offers, separately, the service of a photographer too capture your surf moves or your day on the beach. The user has at least four hours to surf or enjoy the beach before the bus comes back. To catch the Surf Bus, you can schedule previously on the telephone, or wait for the bus on any corner of the rout, surfing spot, or in front of a hotel on the shore and signal when it passes.

Areia branca. Brilho do sol. Amigos. Bons tempos.

Praia do Leme

Menos agitada e local. Chegue lá no ônibus 590, sentido Metrô Cardeal Arcoverde.

Praia do Arpoador

Praia do Leblon
