A self-guided walking tour of Rhodes Old Town, Greece

With its medieval palaces and gates, cobbled streets and thick stone ramparts, visiting Rhodes Old Town in Greece is like taking a trip back through time. This UNESCO World Heritage site owes much of its character to the Knights of St John. Also known as the Knights Hospitaller, this Catholic military order occupied Rhodes from 1309–1523.

During that time they transformed the city into a walled stronghold, and it’s kept a lots of its original medieval character. Today Rhodes Town is a popular day trip destination, whether as a cruise stop or if you’re staying in one of Rhodes’ beach resorts.

Much of the Old Town is pedestrianised (apart from a few scooters) which makes it perfect to explore on foot. So join us on a walking tour of Rhodes Old Town, taking you through its historic highlights including museums, mosques, viewpoints and windmills.

The Liberty Gate – starting point for the self-guided walking tour of Rhodes Old Town

Start your Rhodes Town walking tour at the Liberty (Eleftherias) Gate, one of 11 gates which surround the fortified Old Town. If you’re coming from the cruise ship terminal, it’s around a 12-minute walk following the road west along the edge of the harbour .

Pass through the gate and walk along Apellou past the Municipal Art Gallery. Opposite, behind the taxi stop, you can see the ruins of the Temple of Aphrodite. This was built in the third century BC and dedicated to the Greek goddess of love and beauty.

Argyrokastro Square

Just past the temple is Argyrokastro Square, a pretty cobbled square with a stone fountain made from an old baptismal font in the centre. Overlooking the square is the former Arsenal of the Knights of St John – now home to the Decorative Arts Collection of Rhodes.

Inside the museum there’s a mixture of different forms of folk art from the 16th–20th centuries, including embroidery, woodcarvings, furniture and ceramics. If you want to take a look around, you can get a combined ticket for €10 which also covers the Palace of the Grand Master and Archaeological Museum, both of which we visit later in the walk.

The Decorative Arts Collection of Rhodes in Argyrokastro Square

Carry on along Apellou. On your right you’ll see the Street of the Knights, but walk past the turning to visit the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes first.

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

Rhodes’ Archaeological Museum is located inside the impressive 15th-century former Knights’ Hospital. It showcases 7000 years worth of treasures collected from across Rhodes and other Dodecanese islands. The main building is set around a courtyard with galleries on different levels displaying pottery amphora, vases and statues.

But that’s just the start – there are also gardens, courtyards and annexes to explore, with displays including coins, jewellery and tombstones. Some of the highlights are a first-century marble statue of Aphrodite bathing and the wall-mounted mosaics.

Entry to the museum costs €6, or you can get a combined ticket for €10 which also includes entry to the Palace of the Grand Master and the Decorative Arts Collection of Rhodes.

Exhibits inside the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

Once you’ve finished in the museum, retrace your steps back to the Street of the Knights (Odós Ippotón), turn left and walk up the street.

Street of the Knights

The Street of the Knights was where the Knights of St John once lived, and follows part of an old road between the port and Acropolis of Rhodes. The knights were organised into seven ‘tongues’, depending on where they came from – England, Germany, Italy, France, Provence, Auvergne and Aragon – and each guarded a different section of the city walls.

Each tongue had its own inn, and as you walk up the street you can still see the emblems and inscriptions carved onto the façades which were used to identify them. The most ornate and impressive is the Auberge de France. It’s now used as an office by the French consulate, but is sometimes open to the public for events or exhibitions.

The Street of the Knights on a walking tour of Rhodes Old Town

When you reach the top of the street, the Palace of the Grand Master is on your right.

Palace of the Grand Master

With its tall stone towers, the Gothic Palace of the Grand Master dominates the skyline of Rhodes Old Town. It was built in the 14th century as an administrative centre and the residence of the Grand Master, who was in charge of the Knights of St John.

The palace was heavily damaged by an explosion in the 19th century and later restored by the Italians who occupied the island at the time. Only a fraction of its 158 rooms are open to the public, but the restored halls upstairs display furniture, tapestries, frescoes and mosaics. And there are two museums on the history of Rhodes downstairs.

Entry to the palace costs €6, or you can get a combined ticket for €10 which also includes entry to the Archaeological Museum and Decorative Arts Collection of Rhodes. You can also prebook skip-the-line tickets * (with or without audio guide) to avoid queuing.

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes

After visiting the palace, turn left at the end of the Street of the Knights and walk down Orpheus as far as the Roloi Clock Tower (there are some clean public toilets on your left just before you reach the tower entrance, which cost €0.50).

Roloi Clock Tower

Despite not looking very tall from outside, the Roloi Clock Tower is the highest point in the Old Town. The bottom of the tower dates from the 7th century but the top was rebuilt in the 1850s after being damaged. To get to the top you climb up a steep wooden staircase of 53 steps which takes you to a small, low-ceilinged room with windows on each side.

There are great views over the nearby Palace of the Grand Master, Mosque of Suleiman and the city walls, as well as out across the Old Town to the harbour. Entry to the tower costs €5, which also includes a drink in their terrace café afterwards.

The Roloi Clock Tower in Rhodes Old Town

Mosque of Suleiman

Next to the clock tower is the Mosque of Suleiman. The Ottomans captured Rhodes Town from the Knights of St John after the Siege of Rhodes in 1522. This was the first mosque they built, which is named after Sultan Suleiman I who led the invasion.

Over the years it’s been repaired and rebuilt after earthquakes and explosions. And although it’s not open to the public, you get a good view of the dome and minaret from the top of the clock tower. You can also take a look inside Hafiz Ahmed Agha Library opposite the mosque, which displays copies of Arabic manuscripts and maps.

Views of the Mosque of Suleiman from the Roloi clock tower

Continue walking along Orpheus, which becomes Ippodamou. When you reach a junction at the end of the street, turn right towards Saint Athanasios Gate.

Gate of Saint Athanasios

The Gate of Saint Athanasios (Saint Anthony’s Gate) is another entrance to the Old Town built by the Knights. The victorious Ottoman troops marched through this gate after seizing the city. But they then closed it up to stop other invaders, and it was only reopened by the Italians in 1922 to mark the 400th anniversary of the Ottoman conquest.

If you walk through the gate you get a good view of the imposing walls and moat around the city – more than enough to put off most prospective invaders. The moat (which was never filled with water) is now a park with walking paths running through it.

Saint Athanasios Gate on a self-guided walking tour of Rhodes Old Town

Backtrack to the junction with Ippodamou, but this time go straight on until you reach the next junction. Then turn right and walk along Omirou, a scenic cobbled street with arches over it which is lined with shops, until you get to the Minos Roof Garden Café.

Minos Roof Garden Café

If you fancy stopping for a drink, the Minos Roof Garden Café has some of the best views around. This shaded roof terrace on top of the Minos guest house serves drinks and simple food. But its the views which are the main attraction – across the rooftops to the Palace of the Grand Master, over mosque domes, a nearby windmill and out to sea.

Views of the Palace of the Grand Master from the Minos Roof Garden Café terrace in Rhodes Town

Just past the café, turn left and walk along Sofokleos until you reach a junction, then turn right along Egeos, following this as it runs to the east. Partway along it dog-legs slightly to the right and turns into Minoos, which leads into the Square of the Jewish Martyrs.

Square of the Jewish Martyrs

The Square of the Jewish Martyrs (Plateia Evreon Martyron) is the heart of Rhodes Town’s Jewish Quarter. At the start of the 20th century, 5000 Jews lived in the city. But many left in the 1930s and 1673 were deported to Auschwitz during WWII. Only 151 survived the Holocaust and most later emigrated, leaving only a few Jews in Rhodes today.

There’s a black marble Holocaust Memorial in the centre of the square dedicated to Jews from Rhodes and Kos who lost their lives. You can also see the Sea Horse Fountain in the square, which is a replica of an original destroyed by bombing in WWII.

The Sea Horse Fountain and Holocaust Memorial in Jewish Martyrs Square in Rhodes Town

If you want to find out more about the history of the Jewish Quarter, walk across the square and turn right down Dosiadou to Rhodes Jewish Museum.

Rhodes Jewish Museum

The Rhodes Jewish Museum is located inside the former women’s prayer room at the Kahal Shalom Synagogue. The synagogue was built in 1577. It’s the oldest synagogue in Greece and the last of Rhodes Town’s original six synagogues that’s still in use.

The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of Rhodes’ Jewish population. There’s lots of information about their traditional way of life, religious rituals and the Ladino language they spoke, which derived from old Spanish, as well as a section on the Holocaust showing how the community was destroyed. Entry to the museum costs €6.

Rhodes Jewish Museum

From the museum, retrace your steps to the Square of the Jewish Martyrs, then cross the square to the opposite corner near the Sea Horse Fountain and walk down Aristotelous, following the street as far as Hippocrates Square .

Hippocrates Square

Bustling Hippocrates Square sits at the end of Socrates street, which runs uphill back towards the Mosque of Suleiman. The square is surrounded by cafés, bars, restaurants and shops and is a popular spot in the evenings (though it’s very touristy so if you’re looking for somewhere to eat or drink you’ll usually find better options a bit further away).

The fountain in the centre of the square and a stone staircase are all that’s left of the original Castellania, a former courthouse built by the Knights of St John in the 14th century. And if you climb up the stairs you get a great view out over the square.

Hippocrates Square in Rhodes Old Town

At the bottom of the Castellania stairs, turn right and then turn right again and walk through the Sea Gate (also known as the Marine Gate). This gate was built in 1478 and was the main entrance into Rhodes Old Town from the harbour.

After passing through the gate, cross the road and turn left, walking along the water’s edge. When the road curves to the left, go straight on through the archway, past St Paul’s Gate and on along the edge of Mandraki Harbour towards the three windmills.

Windmills of Mandraki

The three Windmills of Mandraki along the breakwater of Mandraki Harbour were built for the Knights of St John in the 14th century to grind grain after it was unloaded from ships in the harbour. It’s thought there were originally up to 18 mills but only three are left, which have been renovated and make a great spot for photos at sunrise or sunset.

Just beyond the windmills is St Nicholas Fortress, which was built to guard the harbour from invaders on the site of an old chapel dedicated to St Nicholas. It started off as just a tower with the bastion added later on and a lighthouse on top after that.

The three Windmills of Mandraki in Rhodes Town at sunset

Finally, end your self-guided walking tour of Rhodes Old Town by walking on to the end of the breakwater where you’ll see a doe statue on top of a pillar.

Two columns with bronze statues of deer on top sit on either side of the entrance to Mandraki Harbour – a doe on this side of the harbour and a stag opposite. They depict local Rhodian Deer ( Dama Dama ) which are the symbol of the island. They’re said to have been brought to the island by the Crusaders but have probably lived here much longer.

The statues mark the point where the legendary Colossus of Rhodes – a giant 33-metre-tall statue of the Greek sun god Helios – is thought to have stood. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World but was destroyed in an earthquake in 226 BC.

From the statue, you retrace your steps down to the end of the breakwater and you’ll be back at the Liberty Gate. If you want to finish off your walk with a drink, the Auvergne Cafe Bar Restaurant opposite Argyrokastro Square has a pretty, secluded garden. Or it’s around 20 minutes’ walk from the doe statue to the cruise ship terminal.

Where to stay in Rhodes Old Town

The Ancient Knights Luxury Suites * are inside a medieval building built by the Knights of St John, in a quiet side street off Socrates street (around the corner from a couple of great restaurants – Dafni and Marco Polo). They have lots of character with stone walls and wooden beams combined with contemporary décor, and a central courtyard.

Or Kókkini Porta Rossa * is another historic property, built around 1340, this time close to the city walls and St John’s Gate. Their six rooms – named after the Greek, Jewish and Turkish families who once lived there – are decorated with antiques and cosy rugs, and there’s a courtyard garden for breakfast and complimentary evening drinks.

We have just completed the walk and thought it was great. It was nice that you included some quieter streets just off the main tourist areas. We enjoyed a drink at the Minos roof terrace cafe which wasn't busy and had great views. Thanks.

Day 2: Lindos – Old Town & Acropolis

Lindos

Today we explore the town of Lindos, considered the pearl of Rhodes. Lindos conveys the millennium-long Greek tradition, closely associated with music, dance, ouzo and coffee, in all its naturalness and openness. After a panoramic drive along the coast we reach the picturesque village which, with its snow-white houses, the enthroned acropolis and the beautiful bays, is rightly the most popular place on the whole island. During a walk we marvel at the mediaeval old town and become part of the Greek philosophy of life. The many small shops, coffee houses and sociable locals enchant us with their southern flair. Not far from the Acropolis is one of the most beautiful bays on the entire island of Rhodes, Agios Pavlos Bay, where St Paul is also said to have been stranded.

Day 3: Rhodes – Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage), Mandraki harbour & Wonder of the World, the Colossus of Rhodes

Rhodes (World Heritage)

At the beginning of the day, we explore the fascinating history of one of the oldest and largest mediaeval cities in Europe during an orientation tour. Rhodes Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strolling through the small alleys with historical relics from ancient times, we are transported back in time. We admire Mandraki harbour, where it is believed that the monumental Colossus of Rhodes – one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World – once towered more than 33 yd into the sky. The two statues of the stag Elafos and the hind Elafina are known as landmarks of the harbour. Other highlights of the city are the knights‘ street, the bishop’s palace, the Murad-Reis mosque and the famous Grand Master’s Palace. Built by the Knights of St John, the former seat of government is now a museum. The imposing city wall is also a highlight of the sun-drenched island.

Day 4: Panoramic cruise on a catamaran, Marmaris, Hierapolis & Pamukkale (UNESCO World Heritage)

Hierapolis (World Heritage)

First we enjoy a wonderful panoramic crossing in a modern catamaran. Marmaris and the enchanting Turkish Aegean welcome us with their beautiful islands, forests and bays. We travel past beautiful landscapes on to Pamukkale. The town is famous for its unique limestone terraces and thermal springs, which we will of course visit (admission included). Right next door, a spectacular visit to the ancient ‚Holy City‘ of Hierapolis (admission included) awaits us, which is also a UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage Site. We spend the night in a thermal hotel in Pamukkale.

Day 5: Aphrodisias (UNESCO World Heritage) & Meander level

Aphrodisias (World Heritage)

In the morning we reach the ancient city of Aphrodisias (admission included), the capital of Caria and home to artists and sculptors, which is one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world. It is rightly a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mighty stadium, the imposing tetrapylon, the agora and the theatre with inscriptions are just some of the treasures of this impressive ruined city that will inspire us. We will also visit a traditional carpet knotting factory and marvel at this centuries-old craft. We then drive through the beautiful plain of the River Meander to Kusadasi, where we spend three nights with star comfort.

Day 6 – 7: Ephesus (UNESCO World Heritage) & Wonder of the World, the Temple of Artemis

Library of Celsus, Ephesus (World Heritage)

Day 6 begins with a visit to the legendary ancient city of Ephesus (UNESCO World Heritage Site, admission included). The Odeon, Curetes Street, Hadrian’s temple, the Fountain of Trajan, the Library of Celsus, the Agora, Marble Street and the large theatre, where Paul the Apostle delivered a speech, are among the city’s most notable edifices. We will then discover the impressive ruins of the Temple of Artemis (admission included), one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. Afterwards, the great craft tradition takes us to a jewellery and a leather atelier. When we are there, we will find out some interesting things about manufacturing and will have the opportunity to select a personal holiday souvenir. On day 7 we enjoy our dream hotel or discover the surroundings on our own. A visit to the oracle temple Didyma and the picturesque town Tire is certainly worthwhile.

Country and people:

Few countries have such a rich history as Greece and Türkiye. No trip to Türkiye would be complete without a visit to the Turkish bazaars to soak up the oriental flair. The handmade carpets, jewellery and leather goods are an integral part and to some extent centuries-old tradition of the oriental culture – which is why our tour also includes a visit to a jewellery maker, a leather merchant and a traditional carpet weaver. Here you will find out fascinating facts about the Turkish art of carpet weaving and see how hand-woven carpets have been made throughout the generations. In interesting demonstrations, you will learn more about preparing the silk threads, natural wool dyeing and very intricate and elaborate tying with the renowned ‚Turkish knot‘. You will then get to spend one to two hours in the respective factories looking at the works of art and products. Bartering is a typical Turkish custom. If you are not interested in buying anything, the traders will also accept a clear no. No bartering takes place in department stores and supermarkets, or at markets where local farmers sell their vegetables. In Türkiye and Greece, it is customary to give tips. Similar to the USA, this forms part of their income for people working in the sector. Moreover, it symbolizes recognition for the service provided. One can tip chambermaids £1 to £2 per night. In a restaurant or taxi, tipping around 10% of the billed sum is customary. Tips are not given in shops. On group trips, the suggested sum for a tour guide could be £2 per person per day. While for bus drivers the appropriate sum is around £1 to £2 per day per person. Of course, everyone may decide for themselves whether and how much of a tip they wish to give.

Entry requirements for British citizens:

British Citizens travelling to Greece and Türkiye for tourist purposes are able to travel without a visa for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Border guards will use passport stamps to check you are complying with the 90-day visa-free limit for short stays in the Schengen area. If relevant entry or exit stamps are not in your passport, border guards will presume that you have overstayed your visa-free limit. Nationals of other countries are advised to enquire at the Greek and Turkish Embassy about the entry requirements applicable to them. Customers are reminded that it is their sole responsibility to make sure that passport and visa entry requirements for the country or countries that they are visiting are satisfied and we can not be responsible for any problems encountered (whether at any point of entry or elsewhere) in the event that passport and visa requirements are not satisfied. Cards bearing the Cirrus or Maestro symbol are also accepted as means of payment. CAUTION: When paying with debit or credit cards, we recommend vigilance against fraudsters who will secretly try to copy tourists‘ bank cards and spy out the associated PIN so that they can then withdraw cash from cash machines using a cloned card. Travellers are therefore advised when paying by card to always keep their card in sight and to conceal the PIN when entering it. Caution is advised when using debit and credit cards with a PIN in currency exchanges. Türkiye : Since 1 January 2009, the currency is once again called the Turkish lira (TRY). Customs regulations:

Greece: There are a number of products which have entry or exit limitations in Greece from outside the European Union. These include cultural goods, wild fauna and flora and products derived from these, vegetables and plant products, weapons and ammunition, medicines, tobacco and alcoholic beverages (please note the alcohol and cigarette allowances). Türkiye: The import of foreign currency is unlimited. As for exporting currency, a total amount of 5,000 US dollars or the equivalent in TRY is permitted. Travellers may import and export personal jewellery to a total value of 15,000 US dollars. Any value higher than this must be declared when entering the country. Documentation is required for purchases made in Türkiye. Important: If you are travelling to Great Britain from outside the UK, your personal allowances mean you can bring in a certain amount of goods without paying tax or duty. If you go over your allowances you must declare all your goods and pay tax and duty on all the goods in that category. Please inform yourself about the current customs regulations: http://www.gov.uk/bringing-goods-into-uk-personal-use/arriving-in-Great-Britain .

Safety information specific to Türkiye:

British citizens wishing to stay in or travel to Türkiye are generally recommended to keep an eye on the security situation, these travel and safety instructions and on reports in the media. Groups of people gathering, including on public squares and in front of tourist attractions, as well as hanging around near government and military buildings should be avoided. Following the failed violent attempted coup, there have been isolated incidents of aggressive attacks by followers of certain political parties on people with supposedly different views. We strongly recommend remaining vigilant for such escalations, distancing yourself from the situation as quickly as possible and finding a secure location.

Special criminal law provisions:

Greece: The acquisition, possession, import or export of drugs (even in small quantities) is severely punished. Photographing military installations and important civilian facilities (airports / ports) is prohibited due to the risk of spying. Violations will be prosecuted. For cases of theft, deliberate or negligent damage, illegal excavation and removal from the site (i.e. without permission or notification to the authorities) of archaeological finds, prison sentences of up to several years can also be imposed on foreigners, depending on the severity of the offence. Türkiye: The purchase, possession and export of ‚cultural and natural properties‘ is severely punished (prison sentence of up to 10 years), as these properties are regarded as state-owned assets. In case of violation, several months of custody and high bail fees (currently approx. 7,000 GBP) are common procedure for tourists, too, even if they hold antiques or old objects of supposed small value. In individual cases, prison sentences are imposed. You are therefore urgently warned not to acquire or take along antiques, old coins, fossils, etc. from retailers. It is strongly advised against making political statements in public against the Turkish state or expressing sympathy with terrorist organisations.

Medical information:

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website ( https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries ). Each country-specific page has information on vaccine recommendations, any current health risks or outbreaks, and factsheets with information on staying healthy abroad. Caution is advised when eating uncooked food, unpasteurised milk (e.g. fresh milk, ice cream) and fruit that cannot be peeled. Please avoid drinking tap water and ice cubes in drinks! Rule of thumb: do not eat anything that cannot be cooked or peeled!

Medical care:

Greece: Anyone entitled to free healthcare in the UK is also entitled to treatment in Greece – if it is urgently required – from doctors, dentists, hospitals, and so on that are approved by the foreign statutory health insurance company. You should get a free UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK. If you already have an EHIC it will still be valid as long as it remains in date. You can also contact your health insurance company for information on current regulations. Nonetheless, you are urgently recommended to take out travel health insurance for the duration of your holiday which covers risks not assumed by the statutory health insurance companies. Such policies usually also offer benefits not covered by state health insurance companies, e.g. the costs of repatriation. Türkiye: Medical treatment options in the country‘s major cities and tourist regions have improved significantly in recent years. In particular, the large number of private hospitals offer a level approaching that of Europe. In many cases, medical care in rural areas cannot be compared to Western Europe and can be problematic in terms of technology, equipment and hygiene. Any valid health insurance cover you may have (foreign health insurance certificate) is often not sufficient. It is therefore strongly advised to take out private travel health insurance and reliable travel repatriation insurance. In private clinics, it is common to ask for a covered credit card or cash before starting treatment. An individual first-aid kit should be taken along and appropriately protected from the hot temperatures while travelling. An individual consultation with a tropical medicine doctor or travel medicine specialist is also advisable.

Customers must ensure that they are in good physical and mental health in line with the trip in question. Customers must enquire about the physical mobility and psychological autonomy required for this trip.

The Street of Knights in Old Town of Rhodes.

A Tour of the Old Town of Rhodes (Map Included!)

There's plenty to see behind the mighty walls of the medieval old town of rhodes. here are 8 stops not to miss at the unesco world heritage site..

Olga Charami | October 5th, 2017

Street of the Knights

This is the most beautiful street of the Old Town , with the “inns” or lodgings of the different languages (or “tongues”) of the Knights Hospitaller, where meetings were held and visitors accommodated. In the Inn of the Tongue of France is the French consulate, which often organizes exhibitions. The Inn of the Tongue of Spain, the largest of all, also hosts various events. The first building you encounter at the lower end of the street was constructed by the Italians and now houses the tourist information center.

Our Lady of the Castle

Believed to have been built in the 11th century , this Byzantine-style church was converted by the Knights into a three-aisled Gothic house of worship, and then into a mosque by the Ottomans.

Our Lady of the Castle:

Open Tue-Sat, 9:00-17:00

Palace of the Grand Master

Once the magnificent headquarters of the Order of the Knights of St John, its spacious halls are rich with medieval decoration recreated by Italian restorers, including columns, capitals and Hellenistic , Roman and Early Christian mosaic floors , which the Italians themselves brought in from Kos. The ground floor hosts a permanent exhibition of artifacts dating from the early Christian era to the period of Ottoman rule. A truly unique cultural event was organized in the Palace with Renaissance songs by the Mixed Choir of Rhodes and the Berthold Gymnasium choir from Freiburg, Germany.

Palace of Grand Master:

Open 8:00-20:00, tel. (+30) 2241.365.270

Decorative Arts Collection of Rhodes

The city’s renovated ethnographic museum is housed in a Hospitaller-era building known as the Arsenal. It contains objects of folk art and everyday use, including colorful pottery, wood carvings and furniture.

The Synagogue

In the 1930s, some 6,500 Jews lived in Rhodes, where they operated six synagogues . Today, the community has dwindled to 20 people, whose one remaining Synagogue (Kahal Shalom), founded in 1577, is the oldest in Greece. Accompanied by Sephardic-Rhodian music, you can tour the building and see artifacts of daily life belonging to the community. For the Jewish holidays of September or on special occasions (weddings, etc), a guest rabbi is in attendance.

Decorative Arts Collection of Rhodes:

Open Tue-Sun 9.00-17.00, tel. (+30) 2241.070.253

The Synagogue:

Open Sun-Fri, 10.00-15.00, tel. (+30) 2241.022.364

Ottoman monuments

Six mosques stand in the Old Town of Rhodes . Most impressive is the Suleymaniye Mosque , while most distinctive is the Mehmet Aga Mosque , built entirely of wood. The most unique interior decoration you can find, however, is that of the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque , which still opens its doors for prayer three times a day. Also worth a visit is the Hafiz Ahmed Agha Library , with a collection of manuscripts and photographs.

Suleymaniye Mosque:

Open Mon-Sat 9.30-15.00, tel. (+30) 2241.074.090

Municipal ART Gallery

A fine collection of modern Greek art , hangs in a gorgeous Italian building on Symi Square . You can admire the works of leading artists including Yannis Tsarouchis, Nikos Engonopoulos and Theophilos, observing how the socio-political changes of the 19th and 20th centuries influenced Greek art.

Byzantine churches

About 30 Byzantine churches exist in the Old Town, but they are not regularly accessible. The only time you can enter them is the last weekend of September, during the Open Doors event organized by the non-profit organization Rhodes International Culture & Heritage Society.

A €10 ticket will grant you access to the Palace, the Archaeological Museum, the Decorative Arts Collection and Our Lady of the Castle Church!

Open Mon-Fri, 8.00-21.00, tel. (+30) 2241.023.766

"A legacy in the making.”

-  The Huffington Post

Song Premiere: "Collector Man"

- Paste Magazine

“The arrival of a significant new Americana/blues talent.”

-  Pop Matters

“There aren’t many unknown artists who get to record their debut albums partially at Muscle Shoals’ Fame Studios with legends such as keyboardist Spooner Oldham, guitarist Greg Leisz and fiddler Sara Watkins sitting in. But, there aren’t many new singers as impressive as Julie Rhodes either.”

-  American Songwriter

“Part of 'Bound to Meet the Devil's' charms come from the production and the players, but Rhodes' songwriting completes the spell. Her songs seem to rise from the ghosts of '50s blues and '60s soul greats."

-  Boston Herald

“On the cusp of a meteoric rise in the songwriter community, Julie Rhodes is a powerhouse vocalist with authentic soul, grounded both in the songwriting traditions of yesterday’s Americana and today’s very present social and political issues.”

- Howl Magazine

2017 Musician of the Year

-  Improper Bostonian

2017 Female Vocalist of the Year

2017 Americana Artist of the Year

2016 New Artist of the Year

- Boston Music Awards

Song Premiere: "Faith"

-  The Bluegrass Situation

“There’s not a throwaway in the 10 listed songs and one hidden track. “Collector Man” and “Skyscraper Blues” seem especially mature, both tracks getting airtime on various Sirius/XM channels.

 - Blues Music Magazine

"Sometimes you hear a voice and you immediately sit up and take notice. That’s what happened when I first listened to Julie Rhodes, her vocals big, soulful and growling through the speakers in a dark powerhouse sass that suits her Americana sound perfectly..."

- For the Country Record

"The ease with which she soulfully sings us through her heartbreak, and subsequent anger, is exceptional. The blend of country, soul, blues, and folk is effortless on this record. Rhodes’ uncompromising vocals, paired along with the sharp lyricism, leave me shattered in the best possible way."

RHODES CITY TOUR (Rhodes Town) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

Why some major artists are suddenly canceling shows, and in some cases entire tours

A series of tour cancellations and changes by big-name artists has sparked questions about whether the post-pandemic live music boom could be cooling, as consumer spending fatigue meets elevated ticket prices.

On Friday, Jennifer Lopez announced she was canceling her 2024 tour , citing a desire to spend more time with her family. Meanwhile, the Black Keys announced they were abandoning a stadium tour in favor of a series of shows at smaller venues.

Both tours had recently become the subject of social media fodder, namely screenshots showing empty venues at select tour dates. (NBC News could could not directly verify their authenticity.)

Silhouettes of people enjoying a concert

Indeed, some of the evidence of a slowdown is anecdotal. SeatGeek said in an email that the average resale ticket price to attend a summer concert is down to $213 from $257 around this time last year. The company suggested some of the decline could be attributed to the absence of megatours on par with Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” and Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” outings last year.

For artists whose popularity has crescendoed, there appears to be plenty of demand — and high prices. The average resale price for Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” tour is $571, and the next-highest is $409 to see Morgan Wallen, according to SeatGeek data first reported by Axios .

Many of those tours are being sold through Ticketmaster and its parent Live Nation. And prior to facing landmark accusations that it is a monopoly , a claim it denies, Live Nation reported its biggest first quarter ever, with $3.8 billion in revenues. Its concerts business alone was up 26% to $2.9 billion, while “estimated fans” globally were up more than 20%, and up 42% in North America.

Yet official government data points to the makings of a return to a more normal pace for live music event sales after a post-pandemic boom. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last month that movie and concert admissions prices climbed just 3.4% year over year through April, the lowest reading since 2021 and the second-consecutive month showing a slowdown.

Dave Clark, editor of Ticket News, which tracks the live entertainment industry, said the period of explosive live music growth following pandemic reopenings may in hindsight be seen as an aberration: People were simply more eager — and more financially able — to go to as many shows as they could after months cooped up indoors.

This year, Clark said, a reckoning may be emerging.

“The days where there was enough demand to sell out arenas at top dollar just isn’t there in this live events economy — outside of people like Taylor Swift who can sell whatever they want wherever they want,” he said.

At a time when many consumers are struggling to pay for basic necessities, he said, “people are seeing some of the prices they’re asking and just saying, ‘Hard pass.’”

Another factor may be a supply issue, Clark added: too many acts trying to tour at once, or too many times. In the pre-streaming era, bands would go on tour as a way of marketing an album. These days, he said, it’s reversed, since the returns on recorded music have shrunk dramatically.

“Now they’re making records to sell the tour,” he said. “That paradigm has a lot to do with it. It’s just a very overloaded market.”

The Black Keys did just release a new album, and its debut single hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart in March.

Still, the rock duo announced it would cancel and reschedule its summer touring plans, switching from arenas to other venues that provide a more “intimate experience,” according to the band. The new dates have not yet been announced.

The Black Keys aren’t the only group that may be falling victim to costly concert fatigue.

Pop-rock band 311 announced it had canceled upcoming European tour dates due to the “rising costs of touring overseas,” which made completing certain portions of the tour “unfeasible.”

Other stars including Pink and Justin Timberlake have also recently canceled specific show dates, while the Jonas Brothers recently postponed their upcoming European tour , though none officially cited financial concerns as reasons for doing so.

“I think with all that competition for fan dollars, it was obviously natural that some artists were going to lose,” said Bill Werde, director of the Syracuse University Bandier Program for Recording and Entertainment Industries.

There are still plenty of large-scale tours planned for this summer that, so far, appear to be unaffected by flagging demand. Hootie & the Blowfish have 48 dates booked this year, while Dave Matthews Band is slated for 34. Other top acts hitting the road include Maroon 5, Zac Brown Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kenny Chesney and Chris Stapleton.

But experts say recent economic trends in the live-music industry, especially the type of consolidation the Justice Department is now targeting, have translated into fewer smaller-sized venues.

That’s made it more difficult for a given tour date to make financial sense for the artist, venue and promoter.

“Some shows, they can’t afford to drop prices; they can’t afford to wait to try to sell out the rest of the building,” Clark said.

If there is uncertainty about all stakeholders being able to at least break even, he said, the show might get canceled.

Such realities have collided with a more circumspect concertgoer. Brittney D’Mello, a 23-year-old K-pop fan from New Jersey who works in corporate marketing, posted to X about her frustrations with the current touring landscape.

“The tickets are too expensive,” D’Mello said. “There’s only a SMALL amount of people (10%) that will spend $500+ on vip/floor/premium,” she said. “The rest of us have budgets and won’t spend $100 on nosebleeds,” she said, referring to seats that are typically the farthest away from the stage.

“Everyone is touring this year … and we only have money for 2-3 concerts MAX,” she added.

In a follow-up interview with NBC News, D’Mello said she simply decided to cap her concert budget.

“I will only go see two artists that are my tried-and-true favorite artists,” she said. “But I won’t be casually going to concerts anymore. And after going to concerts twice, I think that’s where I stop.”

Artists Are Canceling Arena Tours Right and Left. Maybe They Shouldn’t Have Been Playing Arenas in the First Place

rhodes artist tour

By Chris Black

Image may contain Indoors Theater Auditorium Hall People Person Amphitheatre Architecture Arena and Building

This is an edition of the newsletter Pulling Weeds With Chris Black, in which the columnist weighs in on hot topics in culture. Sign up here to get it in your inbox every Thursday.

Last week, the Black Keys, a band best known for soundtracking car commercials and occasionally fistfighting fellow Nashville resident Jack White, canceled the entire North American leg of a scheduled arena tour without explanation. Why would a band without a major hit in years think it can sell out arenas in tertiary markets? No one can be sure, but the touring business is in trouble, and part of the reason is ego.

Going on tour used to be a non-negotiable part of a life in music—a way to interact with fans, make money, and see the world. But nowadays, artists either want to play arenas or stadiums or do a residency, playing multiple nights in one city at the same venue, à la Harry Styles and Adele. Every week, another artist goes viral on Twitter for low ticket sales, with a screengrab of a Ticketmaster seat map awash in blue. I will be at the Charli XCX and Troye Sivan show in New York City at Madison Square Garden, but can that duo sell as many tickets in Tacoma on a weeknight? Kim Petras, an artist with hits, had such an awful time with arenas that she resorted to Groupon. And legacy artists aren’t necessarily faring better; for every Justin Timberlake, who just added nine dates to his Forget Tomorrow world tour, there’s a Jennifer Lopez, who recently cut her upcoming summer greatest-hits tour short by seven dates , reportedly due to soft ticket sales.

The Taylor Swifts of the world are still making money on the road, and artists from Wednesday and Waxahatchee to Chappel Roan and Joanna Newsom are selling out shows at great venues. But big arena tours have historically been sustained by early ticket sales, and that part of the market appears to be collapsing. The Twitter account @UnderFaceValue tracks price drops and undersold shows and “other peculiarities across the ticketing ecosystem”; its mantra, because soft sales translate into crazy 11th-hour price breaks, is #PaysToWait. If you’d waited for the right moment, you could have seen the Rolling Stones in Seattle for $29, 21 Savage in Chicago for $19, or George Strait and Chris Stapleton in Indianapolis for $13.

These challenges hit close to home for me. My cohost Jason Stewart and I take our podcast, How Long Gone, on the road. We experienced a high point in Philadelphia at Johnny Brenda’s, a cozy spot in Fishtown with a rich history. The show was a sellout, the crowd was fantastic. The next time we visited, we stepped up to a bigger venue, World Cafe Live. The turnout was decent, but it didn’t reach the same level of energy, and the experience felt different. We're heading back to Philadelphia in June, and we've decided to return to Johnny Brenda’s . It's a lesson learned: Better to have a packed house in an intimate setting than a half-empty room in a larger venue. The ego bruise was temporary, but the lesson was invaluable.

So, who do we blame? Is this the fault of corporate mega-promoters like LiveNation (which produced the Black Keys’ tour) booking artists into the biggest venues possible, then jacking the price of everything from tickets to parking to concessions, all regardless of what the market will bear, while tightening their grip on the marketplace to the point that the Department of Justice is preparing to sue them in federal court for antitrust violations ? Is it agents and managers gassing up the artist? Is it just the artist's desire to sell out these giant venues? Maybe all of the above.

If you’re going out on the road and you’re big enough to even consider booking an arena show, why not do three nights in a prestigious venue like Radio City Music Hall or the Beacon Theatre instead? It provides fans with a more intimate experience, and every night will feel full. The Black Keys eventually released a statement . They didn’t blame anyone. They didn’t whine about how hard touring is. They just said they were recalibrating after a successful European run playing venues like Brixton Academy in London and the Zenith in Paris. It was the right approach. We all know it was ticket sales, but no artist should be ashamed of taking your lumps, switching things up, and selling tickets.

Big streaming numbers look great online but don’t necessarily translate to ticket sales. A touring business has to be built, returning to the same cities every year. A career cannot rely solely on the algorithm. Being great live will get people through the door and keep them coming back. These offline collective experiences are few and far between these days; buying tickets and going to shows is essential and valuable. They just don’t all need to be in arenas.

rhodes artist tour

We start our tour from the port or from your hotel (if it is somewhere close to the town center) or we can even meet outside the Old town. We have the chance to see together the ports and the strong walls of the medieval castle-town, the best preserved medieval castle of Europe, a world’s heritage monument and the home-town of about 6000 Greeks who live and work there. Our stroll inside the walls will give you the feeling that you go back in time as everything there is so well preserved. We’ll walk together through narrow streets, you’ll see original buildings dating back to the fifteen or fourteen century, or even older than that, visit one of the museums, see the street  of the knights, the moats and then walk (if you’re not tired) until the modern town’s center to see all the impressive buildings standing there for over 90 years, the many cafes, the port of Mandraki with all the vessels that can give you daily trips to the neighboring islands and the cathedral of Rhodes, the Greek Orthodox church of the Annunciation. Our tour will end at the entrance of Mandraki port, where you can see the known statues of the rhodian dama-dama deer and where according to tradition, the famous statue of Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world had once been set up. It is a beautiful tour and you’ve got the best company for that! Us! We’ll give you historical details, show you our home town, talk to you about the modern life style, the people of the island and of course show you the best places that you can get fantastic pictures! Our tour can end next to the shopping area of the modern town where you can later pay a visit on your own or we can walk you back. Shops in the modern town are open 09.00-13.30 and 16.30-21.00 the medieval’s town shopping area is open all day long! Everything is in a walking distance of no more than half an hour. We’d love to see you there! *Medium walking condition and comfortable shoes are required *Entrance fees 6 or 8 Euros per museum, children under 18 years old free
