Provence has a number of major grape varietals grown throughout the region. For red wine, these grapes include  Mourvedre  (the main grape used for wine production here),  Grenache Noir ,  Syrah , Carignan, Cinsault, Counoise, Taniat  and  Cabernet Sauvignon . The white grape varietals grown are  Grenache Blanc, Rousanne, Marsanne, Clairette, Bourbulene, Ugni Blance or Trebbiano  and  Rolle  or  Vermentino .

Provence has ideal grape growing conditions with its Mediterranean climate. Mild winters are followed by very warm summers with little rain fall and a significant amount of sun. In fact, this area receives double the hours of sunlight needed for grapes to grow and ripen at more than 3,000 hours of sun per year.

The Mistral winds play an important role in creating the climate of Provence and assisting with keeping the vineyards dry. This helps reduce occurrences of phylloxera by fending off bugs and pests. The winds are essentially Mother Nature’s natural pesticide!

Vines planted on the south facing slopes are offered protection from the damaging winds that can be created by the mistrals highest winds, whilst facing the seaside absorbing the sea’s spray.

One of the most predominant features that can be found in the wines made from this region is the unmistakable aromatic bouquet of lavender, juniper, thyme and rosemary — also known as Garrigue or Maquis. Other defining notes can be that of wild strawberry, raspberry, wet slate, mint, salted watermelon and candied grapefruit.

With its dreamy terrior, sun kissed skin hued wines, and rolling plains wafting of sensual herbs, Provence makes for one of the best and probably underrated places to produce wines!

What Rosé Wines Do You Recommend Drinking?

My go to is  Fleur de Mer ‘Cotes de Provence’, Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah

If you are like me and swoon over Provencal Rosé’s, consider these other regions producing ‘Pink Wines” that will make you think outside of the box.

First, drive roughly 65 miles Northwest of  Marcellie . Kissing the border of the Languedoc you will find the  Tavel region  of France in the  Cotes du Rhone , wine production here is 100% Rosé.

Tavel’s major grape varietals are similar to Provence. Cinsault and Grenache make up most of the production, followed by Syrah and Mourvedre. Here you will also find a Mediterranean climate affected by Mistral winds. In the Western part of Tavel you will find slate covered with chunky limestone. In the East, you’ll find ‘galets roules’ – round stones formed from centuries of flood waters. In the South, expect to see sandy fine-grain soils. Here the wines evoke flavors of raspberry coulee, white pepper, peach, green olive and cherry.

Other regions around the world are also making fantastic Provencal-style Rosé’s!

Try the  Chateau de Trinquevedel, Grenache, Cinsault, Clairette

Let’s take a boat 90 miles from the Italian boarder into the Mediterranean Sea to the  Isle of Corsica . The island is a territorial collective of France, but for many years it belonged to Italy. Many of the region’s winemaking traditions and grape varieties are Italian in origin.

Corsica’s terrain is mountainous, with soils rich in schist, granite, chalky limestone and clay. Most of the islands vineyards are perched along the coastlines. The vines receive an ideal amount of sun per year, at about 2,750 hours.

Major grape varitals grown here are the Nielluccio (ancestor of the Sangeovese), Grenache, Sciacarello and Vermentino. These Rosé’s are produced in the Saignee method. Corsican wines are unlike any you have had with the same grape make up. These wines have notes of green olive brine, fig, chamomile and plum.

My favorite Rosé is from  Maestracci ‘E Prove’, Nielluccio and Sciacarello

Let’s now make our way to the Russian River Valley in  Sonoma County California . Soils here consist of sandstone, loam – “Goldridge soil”, clay and alluvial.

Resting in the heart of Sonoma County near the rugged terrain of the Pacific Ocean you will find the Russian River Valley. This region is known for warm day time temperatures and brisk evening fog rolling off of the Petaluma Gap. Sonoma is famous for its  Chardonnay  and  Pinot Noir , and arguably put the New World on the map for these varietals.

It’s loaded with notes of wild Strawberry, watermelon, ruby grapefruit and honeysuckle.

Wines of Provence - Guide to Rose [6 Vineyards To Visit in France]

Wondering what types of wine are found in the Provence region? The answer: Rosé. In fact, a whopping 87% of all wines made in the region are vin rosé, and the blushing pink wine finds itself exempt from the drinking cutbacks that other wines have suffered in the country. Actually, rosé sales are higher than ever in France, and consumption has increased by 12%

Popular for any time of day, and increasingly used as an apératif, or before meal drink, rosé is perfect chilled or even with ice to cool off on those warm Provencal days.

The first wine made in history, as early as 7000 BC, was rosé. Red wines came around 2500 BC and whites even later. The reason?

The wine is made using crushed red grapes and allowing the skins only minimal contact with the juice. Rosé is the simplest wine to make, and is so incredibly versatile, that the flavor options are near limitless.

There’s even a scientific research center, the Centre du Rosé located in Vidauban, Provence, that is wholly dedicated to vin rosé. At the center you can even participate in tastings and training to become a Provence wine savant in no time.

So which are the best vineyards to visit?

1) Domaine de Trevallon, 7 km west of St. Remy, is making some of the most original and striking wines in Provence. Because his slopes are north-facing Eloi Durrbach planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, instead of the predominant and traditional Mourvedre, which makes a wine that exudes the terroir of Provence and the special soils found in Les Baux (as in "bauxite", i.e. aluminum).

2) Brusset Cairanne and Brusset Hauts de Montmirail, nestled up to the slopes of the Ventoux, produce some of the best wines in the region. (Great olive oil can also be found in the district.) They have a place in Cairanne as well as in Gigondas. Go to Gigondas for the views and local flavor. There are some other great wineries there too, like Domaine de Pallieres and Domaine Raspail-Ay.

3) Mas de Gourgonnier, near Les Baux. It's family owned and has been farmed organically for over three decades. They utilize a mix of traditional varieties along with some Cabernet Sauvignon for their red wines and Sauvignon Blanc for the white. Their olive oil is a blend of four traditional local varieties.

4) Domaine Tempier's Bandol Rouge La Migoua, La Tourtine, Cabassaou, and also the Ros are legendary wines which are the product of the genial Lucien Peyraud who passed away a decade ago, but under whose guidance this old family estate, owned since 1834, became the birthplace of a modern Provencal renaissance.

This estate continues to be the summit of French Mourvedre viticulture; it's the classic and defining grape from Provence. Located near the town of Castellet, the local color is also attractive yet sophisticated with F1 and motorcycle races taking place here. It was also the location for the Marcel Pagnol film, The Baker's Wife.

5) Domaine de Rimauresq is in the Cote d'Azur in the beautiful town of Pignans and makes a delicious and unique white wine from around 85% Rolle, with a little Ugni Blanc. The red wines are also outstanding and the estate was one of the top places after phylloxera beginning in the late 1880s. The winery is modern in technique but the vineyard is old and traditionally farmed. It was acquired in the late 1980s by a Scottish family and is located near Toulon.

6) Chateau Vignelaure near Rians is making excellent wines...and so is Richaume in Puyloubier (Cotes de Provence), created by a cello-playing history professor and now run by his son.

Also, while not available to for visiting, Château Miraval, owned by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, makes a phenomenal rosé. The wine made it on 2013’s top 100 wines in the world list, and was the only rosé to get a spot on it, so be sure to grab yourself a bottle while in Provence!

Whatever your preferences are, be sure to experience the delightful wines of Provence one way or another. From wine drives, to vineyard tours, to training, and wine tastings, rosé can be experienced year round thanks to the mild climate and pairs well with the local, Mediterranean flavors.

In the spring, summer and fall, you can catch some amazing wine and food festivals as well, such as the Vendages Etoilees Festival in Cassis where chefs and vineyards offer demos and tastings of the wines of Cassis, which has the oldest registered AOC (designation of origin) in France.

Rosé from Provence, in general, is crisp, dry and refreshing, and not as sweet as American varieties. The wine is highly versatile and pairs well with a variety of sweets and foods and is embraced the world over as a casual wine that anyone can enjoy.

We’re remedying summertime temperatures with a chilled rosé from Provence’s best vineyards, including estates with serious eco-credentials and domaines dotted with contemporary art worthy of a gallery. Forget the lavender fields; this French wine is something oenophiles can really raise a toast to.

T hought Thought Provence was all about lavender? After a few glugs of its delicate rosé, you’ll likely think twice about that. Thanks to its Mediterranean climate and top-notch soils, this sun-drenched south-eastern region of France is strewn with more than 430 vineyards and cellars. But where to get your fix of the pink plonk? Read on for some of Provence’s best vineyards specialising in rosé, including eco-friendly estates, domaines dotted with art and those where a glass of the good stuff is served with Michelin-starred dinners.

Eco-friendly wine estates, historic domaines and Provence’s best rosé vineyards

Cotignac, Var

Set in the newly created terroir of Côtes de Provence AOC Notre Dame des Anges, the award-winning Mirabeau is a delightful, family-owned business with a curated boutique in Cotignac and a newly found wine estate. Its 14 hectares of sprawling vines – principally of the grenache, cinsault and rolle varieties – is fringed by umbrella pines, cork-oak trees and chestnut groves that form the Plaine des Maures nature reserve. The spectacular location chimes with South London founders Jeany and Stephen Cronk’s commitment to Mirabeau’s eco-credentials; moving beyond organic farming practices, they’ve adopted a regenerative-agriculture approach that supports a naturally thriving ecosystem – alpacas and sheep graze between the vines – and helps re-nourish the soil. If one of its four pale, vegan rosés don’t take your fancy, try the botanical dry rosé gin.

This 1,500-acre estate is found at the end of a winding lane clad by woodland populated with Aleppo pines, ancient oaks and olive trees. If you’re a lover of food, wine and travel, this is where you come for some R&R. Days spent dipping in and out of the estate’s three pools, navigating cycling routes, trying cookery classes and – of course – wine tasting segue into late-afternoon spa sessions and dinner in the Michelin-starred Le Jardin de Berne. The Château de Berne produces all three colours of wine, though it’s best-known for its blushing-pink plonk which embodies that freshness and flavour that makes Provence wines so exceptional. Committed to sustainability, the estate has earned the High Environmental Value (HEV) certification’s top rating (Level 3), so you can shine your eco-halo as you sip.

This is the grandfather of Provence’s rosé brands – in the early 20th century, Marcel Ott was the first to commercialise premium rosé in the region. You’ll likely recognise Domaines Ott*’s distinctive bottle shape, which echoes the Roman amphora. Only available in select five-star restaurants and hotels (Byblos in St Tropez being one) its wines are deliciously exclusive, and hail from vineyards are spread across three Provençal terroirs dedicated to sustainable viticulture: Clos Mireille, Château de Selle and Château Romassan. Our favourite tipple? The Etoile, a new cuvée for 2020 that blends the best grapes of all three vineyards.

In 2006, Château d’Esclans produced, for the first time, a few barrels of Whispering Angel rosé from a vineyard tangled with 80-year-old vines. Today, that’s just one of five quaffable cuvées in production here. Hugged by the Valley d’Esclans, a half-hour drive from the Mediterranean coast, the 650-acre estate (100 acres of which are decorated with vines) is known for its concentrated flavours of the grenache grape – it’s from this that it produces what is hailed as the world’s most expensive rosé: Garrus .

Château Léoube was reborn in 1997 when Lord and Lady Bamford (of Daylesford fame) purchased a crumbling, 15th-century estate on the Côte d’Azur and applied their organic, biodynamic and environmentally friendly farming principles. Stretching across four kilometres of the Mediterranean Coast, it’s the largest privately owned property along the sea – though its size isn’t not compensating for anything. A pleasant walk from the Plage du Pellegrin, it draws epicurean visitors with its farm-to-fork food offerings, olive oil and flavour-packed, sustainable wines – three of which are crisp and bright rosés delivered in delightfully fuss-free bottles courtesy of designer Jacqueline Morabito. Our pick? The fruity La Londe.

Founded in the 13th century by the Knights Templar, the Commanderie de Peyrassol’s 850 acres is carpeted with olive groves, oak trees and grapevines – small wonder pilgrims once made a habit of resting up here on their way to the Holy Land. With several centuries of viticulture know-how under its belt – and after a serious revamp in 2003 – the domaine has earned its place on the map of Provence’s most respected vineyards . For a real taste of Provence, try the 1204, Clos Peyrassol or Château Peyrassol, each fresh, refined and delicate to taste. Between tipples, make time to visit the open-air sculpture park studded with contemporary art, swing a few serves on the tennis courts and check in to one of Peyrassol’s farmhouse-style abodes.

The Château Sainte-Roseline estate centres around the 11th-century Roseline Chapel, to which guests travel from afar to visit the body and relics of Saint Roseline That’s only one small part of this est a te , however. We’ve got our sights set on the 110-hectares of vineyards, which produces the herby Cuvée La Chapelle de Sainte Roseline as well as the award-winning Roseline Prestige – if you’re after something pale, interesting and easy on the palate, this is the bottle for you. Before you down a glass too many, make a point of scouting out the Teillaud family’s incredible contemporary art collection; you’ll spot masterpieces by Chagall and Giacometti.

Perfect wine tour!

We had an amazing time on this tour! My fiancé and I have been on several wine tours in the United States and were interested to learn more about French wines, in particular wines from Provence. This tour was exactly what we hoped for! Our guide was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. He provided helpful background information about classification of French wines and then introduced us to wine making in Provence. We went to 3 vineyards – all were excellent and different!!! We really enjoyed the variety, and we were able to taste white, rosé, and red wines at each site (and Peter kindly showed us how to taste the wines properly). On The Rosé Road Again: A Guide to Wine Tourism in Provence

The movie-set beautiful French region is home to the world's most fashionable rosé wines.

Wine tourism is back, and one of the most pleasurable regions in which to indulge grape-driven passion is sun-drenched (even in fall), movie-set beautiful Provence, home to the world’s most fashionable rosé wines. More grand wine estates than ever are wooing oenophiles with luxury lodging, pools, spas and expert-led tastings.

Château de Berne, about an hour’s drive from the buzzy beach clubs of Saint-Tropez, is a trailblazer of the trend, with a serious eco-conscious twist behind its excellent wines. Think of the bucolic 1,700-acre historic estate in the large Côtes de Provence appellation as a sustainable Shangri-La. The château’s gourmet restaurant, Le Jardin de Berne, is one of a small number of Michelin 1-star restaurants in France to earn the Guide’s new Etoile Verte (green star) award for sustainable gastronomy.

Executive chef Louis Rameau draws from a 30,000-sq-ft organic fruit and vegetable garden to create his seasonal, local-flavors-of-Provence cuisine. The château’s savory rosés, as well as rarer estate reds, whites and sparkling wines, come from vineyards that were certified organic in February 2018.

Fresh, light, crisp, dry and mouthwatering, pale pink wines account for about 90% of the wine produced in the appellation. Château de Berne’s winemaker starts harvesting grapes at midnight and presses them immediately to retain the pale color. Traditionally, Provence rosés are blends of several grapes, including grenache, cinsault and syrah.

Before I explain the best tours, I want to explain some background information on the famed Provence wine region. That way, you have a little foundation and better understand what you have to look forward to! 🤠 First, France’s Provence wine region has been making wine for over 2,600 years. This makes it the oldest viticultural (wine-producing) area in all of France, eclipsing the well-known Bordeaux wine region by about 600 years! With such a long-standing history, there are understandably quite a few wineries in the region… as in over 400 of them! Talk about being a vineyard-rich countryside 😅

This region of France is able to produce so much wine because of its favorable climate, which is largely thanks to the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean Sea regulates the weather such that there are plenty of sunny days and a few rainy days. In addition, the region has something called the “Mistral” wind, which also helps to keep the vineyards dry and free of pesky bugs. Add the unique geography and soils infused with limestone and crystalline schist (granite); the region has perfect conditions for growing an assortment of grapes! As a result, there are a total of 9 regions or AOC (Appellation de’Origin Contrôlée) in Provence. I won’t dive into all 9 as you’ll learn about them on the tours, but there are about 450 AOCs in all of France!

The Provence wine region is renowned worldwide for its exquisite rosé wines. That’s right, 88% of Provence’s wine production is the beloved, delicate pink-hued wine! The pin that is almost directly beneath the purple pin is Toulon, which is a much smaller port city. Thus, you’ll find a lot of ships, warships, and maritime-related activities in the city if you visit. To the left of Toulon, about 1.25 hours west via train, is Marseille. This is the second most populous French city and one of the oldest cities to be established in France. It functions as one of the most important port cities and as you explore the city, you’ll notice distinct Brutalist architecture!

Finally, the leftmost pin is Avignon, which is a quaint medieval town, much like the historic city of Carcassonne . This small city was once the center of Christianity with 7 generations of popes residing in the Palace of the Popes!

Is a Wine Tour in Provence Worth It?

My very biased two cents is that these yes, it’s worth it. Let me explain from a broke adult perspective lol… because I wouldn’t know what it’s like to be a financially stable adult — yet 🤠

First, these tours take you directly to la crème de la crème Provence wineries where you get to sip on the region’s renowned wines and indulge in local gastronomic delights. And as mentioned previously, there are literally hundreds of wineries in the region, so finding the best ones can be difficult.

Not to mention, if you aren’t planning a road trip through the region, transportation to the wineries is another factor you’ll have to work out.

Moreover, a wine tour allows you to embark on this journey with a knowledgeable guide who possesses an intimate understanding of the region, its vineyards, and its cultural heritage. When I first solo traveled, I wouldn’t do tours because I was so broke (typical college student vibes I know 🥲).

However, I now prioritize these incredible experiences over staying in super nice hotels (okay most of the time). I’ve realized how tours grant you the valuable opportunity to delve deep into the local culture, which is so much better than reading from your phone.

Finally, these tours provide a chance to connect with fellow wine enthusiasts from around the world. One of my favorite bits about traveling is just getting to meet new people. These tours create an easy outlet for swapping stories and making lasting connections with people who share a common appreciation for wine, culture, and exploration!

So, if you have the means (because I am not trying to endorse going into debt lol) I absolutely believe in embarking on a cultural experience through the breathtaking region of Provence!

Tips for Planning Your Provence Wine Tours

• ✅ Book ahead of time: Whether you’re traveling through Paris or Toulouse, drinking wine is like the national pastime in France…okay, maybe next to protesting 😅 Regardless, I recommend booking ahead of time to ensure you get your preferred time slot and experience. Some of these small group tours will actually cancel if you wait until the last minute because the tour operators don’t think there’s any interest and have a minimum requirement to run.
• 🍴  Have dietary restrictions? : If your food tour includes lunch, make sure to inform the guide beforehand about any dietary restrictions or allergies you have. They are usually able to make accommodations as long as you give them advance notice.
• 🍷 Don’t drink on an empty stomach: The golden rule of drinking is always to eat beforehand! I didn’t know that my first time and had to learn the hard way… 🥲

• 💧  Water Bottle  — Similarly, although you will be consuming a lot of wine, it is crucial to still drink some water.
• 🌞  Check the weather:  Check the weather before you leave and plan accordingly. I.E. Don’t forget to sunscreen!
• 🚗  Check departure points and times:  Please ensure that you verify the meeting location for your tour and consider the travel time from your accommodation. Note that only a few tours offer hotel pick-up.
• 📸  Bring your Camera:  Make sure to document your experience by taking lots of pictures so that you can share the story with your loved ones when you return home!

Yes! You can absolutely visit wineries in Provence even if you decide to not go on a tour. You would just need to make a reservation for touring. I would also recommend renting a car as public transportation is very limited outside the city.

Depending on the experience, a Provence wine tour can range from about $100 USD to $500+ USD for the more exclusive, private tours.

Although summer is when people are usually available to travel, I’d argue the best time of the year for a wine tour in France is April – June or September to October . I’ve been to France during both of these times of the year and it’s so much more enjoyable. You don’t have to deal with throngs of crowds, hotels cost half the price, and some of the tours actually provide small discounts! One thing to note is that harvesting season typically runs from August until October. Thus, vintners are often busy in the fields, so you’ll want to be sure to book in advance as supply tends to dip.

Most people will argue that Bordeaux is the region of France with the best wine. However, I’d argue that it really depends on the type of wine you prefer. Other wine regions in France include the Rhône Valley & Beaujolais wine region , Loire Valley, Burgundy, Champagne, and Saint Émilion to name a few.

Yes LOL. From my experience, this is the one French stereotype that always holds true. The French love their wine and they will drink it every chance they get!

Once a wine which was usually only cracked open by the pool in the Southern French sunshine to cool down, wine-makers in the Côte de Provence appellation have seriously concentrated their efforts on producing premium quality, refreshing yet complex rosés, with great success. Rosé has now become an absolute “go to” for wine lovers, although it does certainly taste even more delightful on a hot summer’s day!

Our three and four day Exclusive breaks introduce you to the most exclusive rosé wines, including Whispering Angel and Minuty, with luxury accommodation, private transport, VIP visits and fine dining.

Upon arrival at the beautiful 5* Château de Berne in the heart of the pretty Provençal vineyards, check into your preferred room grade. After settling in, you will be taken on a private tour of the estate’s world class vineyard and winery, tasting eight Château de Berne wines. In the evening, a five course wine pairing dinner will be served in the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant.

After breakfast on day two, you will be met at the hotel by an executive chauffeured vehicle, which will accompany you throughout the day on a private basis. Starting the day in true style, you will be welcomed at Château d’Esclans, the creator of the world-famous Whispering Angel. Your final visit of the day will take place at another prestigious producer of rosé wines, La Commanderie de Peyrassol. Founded in the 13 th Century by the Knights Templar, this historic estate was a favourite resting place for pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. Today’s owners have restored the domaine to its former glory and following a guided tour, you will taste extensive examples of some of the region’s most highly-regarded rosé wines. After returning to your hotel, the evening will then be free to spend as you please.

For those spending a third night and booking the four day package, your chauffeur will return on the morning of day three, and accompany you on a second day of tastings. 5 Things to know about Rosé Wine in Provence

Oh, Provence. That dreamy place in France not called Paris. Provence is probably the place you envision when imagining the French countryside. Surely you know this picturesque region: lavender fields, the French Riviera, olive trees, Cézanne, and of course, wine–specifically rosé wine .

Things to Know about Rosé Wine in Provence

I’ve watched the reputation of rosé among the French evolve during my years living in Paris. Many French will turn up their noses at rosé, but once the temperatures rise, that all changes. From the beginning of May through the end of September, the supermarket shelves are stocked with countless pink bottles with nary a red to be found. On terraces, at picnics, and on péniches along the Seine, rosé wine is the only liquid that crosses the lips of Parisians.

So, what exactly is this pretty pink nectar of the gods? Like all things French, the answer to this simple question is not so easily explained. Thus, here are five things to know about rosé wine in Provence.

Geography & History of Wine in Provence

Located in southeastern France, with its boundaries being roughly the Rhône River to the west, Italy to the east, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south, Provence has a varied, yet primarily limestone landscape, with a climate that is sunny, hot, and dry, characteristic of the Mediterranean. Their famous Mistral winds ferociously sweep across the region from the Alps, which is welcomed during the summer months. It also protects the vineyards from diseases caused from humidity.

Marseille is much maligned by many French, but the capital of Provence is the birthplace of France’s wine industry. Phocaeans brought the grapevine to the area around 600 BC. The ingenious Romans came some four centuries later with their roads, arches, and numerals, spreading the wine growing tradition to other parts of France, which at the time was known as Gaul. When the Roman Empire died, so did the grapevines.

Thanks to the monks, the vines were resurrected during the Middle Ages. Later, the region’s nobility stepped in during the start of the 14 th century to further increase production of vin . Overproduction {who can fault them?} during the early 20 th century led to winegrowers creating a cooperative, which eventually led to Provence rosé wine being certified with an Appellation d’Origine Protégée distinction. Now, there are a whole lot of rules and regulations that go along with making rosé wine in Provence. Yay France!

Making Rosé Wine

Speaking of making rosé wine in Provence…it’s not just mixing white and red wines together. No, this is France. You should be aware by now that things are much more complicated than that.

Rosé wines are made from red grapes such as cinsault, grenache, syrah, cabernet-sauvignon, carignan, tibouren, and mourvédre. These grapes have dark red skins and white flesh that are crushed, which releases a light juice that is tinted by the ruby skins. The juice can remain with the skins anywhere from 2-20 hours before the fermentation process begins. Most rosé wines are kept in stainless steel vats, rather than barrels.

Finally, the winemaker takes at least two of the rosé batches and blends them together to make the wine. It’s important to note that the batches are made from single grape varieties. For instance, a varying amount of syrah can be combined with a tibouren to create the rosé. When I visited Provence in November, several of the winemakers I met were in the process of blending, so I got a sneak-peek of what we’ll be drinking this summer.

Tasting Rosé Wine

One of the great things about rosé wine, besides the deliciousness, is that it’s affordable. A good bottle of rosé in France should cost no more than 15 euros. This means that there’s no reason not to taste a whole bunch of them. Whether for an aperitif; with spicy food like Mexican, Thai, or Indian; standard American fare such as burgers and BBQ; or any sort of seafood, rosé wine pairs nicely.

Fresh, fruity, and floral, this wine is somewhere between a full-bodied red and a crisp white. Meant to be served between 46-53 degrees Fahrenheit {8-12 Celsius}, rosé wines are categorized in six colors: Gooseberry, Peach, Grapefruit, Cantaloupe, Mango, and Mandarin. If you’re unsure, look for a gold, silver, or bronze “Vins de Provence le Concours” sticker on the bottle. Each year, blind tastings result in approximately 100 medals awarded to the wines of Provence.

Provençal Rosé by the Numbers

One of the things I learned during my vin-filled week in Provence is that the 600+ winegrowers have had to fight to earn respect for their wine, especially around France. It hasn’t been just talk and marketing, however. The proof is not only in the product, but also the numbers.

In 2013, 30% of the wine consumed in France was rosé. Of the 146 million AOP rosé bottles produced in Provence each year, 84% of those bottles are sold in France, with 40% of that number sold in Provence. And another interesting little nugget I discovered is that rosé now outsells white wine in France. What those numbers say to me are that even the wine snobs of Bordeaux and Burgundy are throwing back plenty of Provence rosé.

A mind-boggling 88% of wine produced in Provence is rosé, with only 8.5% red and 3.5% white. Approximately 96% of all Provencal wines are made in three appellations: Cotes de Provence, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, and Coteaux Varois en Provence. Provence represents 39% of domestic rosé production and 5.6% of the world’s production. And, 16% of Provence’s rosé wine is exported, with the United States of America being the biggest buyer {USA! USA! USA!} followed by the Belgians.

Visiting Vineyards in Provence

With over 600 winegrowers in Provence, there’s no shortage of vineyards to visit. And in such a huge area, it would be impossible to get to them all. Thankfully, the region created the Provence Wine Route in 2011. Sponsored by the Provence Wine Council {CIVP} and the PACA Regional Chamber of Agriculture, the route has made organizing a wine-fueled road trip to Provence much more manageable.

Almost 430 winemakers have joined this wine tourism initiative and welcome visitors for tastings and tours. Along highways and tiny hidden roads, look for the lavender “routes des vins de provence” signs directing you to the next taste of rosé. Maps are also available and highly recommended {as is a GPS!}. Places I can personally recommend include: Domaine du Clos d’Alari ; Château de Berne ; Château de Saint-Martin ; Le Clos des Roses ; Commanderie de Peyrassol ; Coteaux Varois en Provence Wine Center found at Hostellerie de l’Abbaye de la Celle; and Chateau la Coste .

I don’t believe in overthinking wine. If it tastes good then I’ll drink it. I don’t necessarily want to blabber on over the notes, tannins, and all that other jazz. This is one of the things I loved about my wine trip to Provence. It was a bit sassy compared to other grape-growing regions of France. In this regard, I’d say that wine from Provence is a direct reflection of the people who grow it, and that’s a great compliment. Make your own rules and embrace your differences. In its rosé wines, Provence has done just that

Interesting! And some of those places…stunning! I would love to learn more about roses in France someday. I’ve been getting an education in roses here in California, where they are making a comeback and are being carefully crafted by boutique winemakers with grapes that are rather unusual here in CA (cinsault is one of them).

Rosé wines are taking France by storm. I’m not sure that I’ve tried any from California. It would be interesting to compare the two. How about this: you come to France with a bottle of California rosé and we’ll hop a train to Provence. How does that sound?

The sommeliers I speak to actually say the best rose’ comes from The Gard region. a little West of Provence but bordering Uzes where Provence begins. Especially the Gris’ which is very pale and delicious on a long hot summer day.

For me there are three wonderful rights of spring in Philadelphia. The first fresh cut of grass on the golf course, baseballs opening day, and the first warm afternoon to relax and enjoy a bottle of rose on the front porch with a honeyed goat cheese and some smoked almonds all mean that summer is just around the corner!! Provence sounds like a magical and necessary yearly trip!!

Now, that sounds like a great ritual. And, yes, Provence is a yearly trip and probably more!

Château La Gordonne ‘La Chapelle Gordonne’ Rosé in the vineyards

A stunning, impressive woman drove up to an enchanting Provençal estate surrounded by wild herbs, lavender and Mediterranean trees. As she stepped out of her vehicle, the sun illuminated her golden hair and her eyes sparkled like gems as she energetically made her way inside the gorgeous limestone château that was perfectly accented with cream-colored wrought-iron balconies. She could not wait to show her winemaker the new babies she brought for the cellar…. three Italian egg-shaped sandstone vessels that would bring their fantastic Provence rosé wine to a much higher level of excellence.

But this wasn’t just any impressive woman; this was Madame Nathalie Vranken, co-owner and CEO of Champagne Pommery , and in 2006, she and her husband purchased a wine estate in Provence, France, Château La Gordonne . It is an estate that goes back to 1654 and has ideal soils (made up of clay, schist and limestone, deemed as the “Golden Triangle” of terroir) to express minerality in Provence rosé wines. Among the 815 acres of vineyards lies a section of around 80 acres of old vines which makes up their ‘ La Chapelle Gordonne’ rosé which is a wine that gives the delicacy and beauty one expects from Provence yet it has a depth and complexity that makes it a top selection among its peers.

Nathalie Vranken is never content to sit back and accept that she is already making wonderful wines; she’ll go to any length to constantly improve. For example, in 2009, she led the way to manually harvest at night, preserving pristine aromas and flavors and retaining fresh acidity. But she was ready to make another giant leap in quality that focused on expressing their fantastic soils -those egg-shaped sandstone vessels were the key, and she knew her very talented young cellar master, Julien Fort, was up for the task. He was always driven to push the boundaries of traditional winemaking to unlock a wine’s most remarkable qualities.

At first, the plan was to make one rosé bottling from the top selection of around 80 acres of the old vines, which would only be around 8 acres, and age the rosé wine in the eggs. Julien says that the shape of the egg helps to rotate the wine while it still has the residual yeast left over from fermentation, helping to bring out more of the sense of place, aka terroir, and giving it a bit more texture. There is a slight exchange of oxygen as the sandstone has pores, just like a barrel. Yet, there is no residual oak aroma, only a pure expression of the grapes and their soils that is enhanced by a small amount of oxidative aging for around six to eight months. This new rosé top selection is called ‘Le Cirque des Grives.’

Nathalie Vranken and Julien had their expectations surpassed when they tried this new rosé bottling of the old vines in the egg vessels. They decided to take their 80-year-old Vermentino white grapes, known locally as the Rolle grape, and were ecstatic with the incredible results. And so another exquisite wine was born with the name ‘Semaphore.’

So, Madame Vranken would give her cellar master a seemingly impossible task: to make a red wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvèdre and 25% Grenache, the first three being very tannic grapes. The caveat is that the red wine must have the overall delicate beauty of their rosé wines yet still keep the richness and complexity expected of a high-caliber red wine.

Keeping the Power and the Magic

Julien was thrilled to be given the challenge and quickly started experimenting with his team. The idea was to figure out how they could extract all the pure essence from these red grapes and still have that overall graceful quality to the texture that dances across the palate. Finally, they arrived at the perfect, although extremely laborious, method of hand-picking each grape berry off the grape bunches after they had been brought to the cellar and placing the individual grape berries without any juice into the eggs.

“They look like caviar,” remarked Julien when it came to him describing how they look when they are first within the sandstone vessels. Then, through rotating, the slight impact starts to ferment the grapes slowly, and that is their extraction, more like an infusion, one of the gentlest extractions one could do when making a red wine. The result is phenomenal as it is a red wine filled with depth, richness and complexity. Still, it has a wispy overall sensation that fits its place of birth, an enchanting estate in one of the most magical wine regions in the world. The red is named “Les Planètes”.

Today, they have 30 egg-shaped sandstone vessels in their cellar and later this year, all three wines—the rosé, white and red—will be released as “The Trilogy.”

Champagne Pommery has always had strong women at the helm with Madame Pommery taking over in 1858 to Madame Vranken, making it one of the most innovative Champagne houses, and now, bringing that innovation to an estate in Provence that is 370 years old, and she is doing it with her daughters Maïlys and Pauline. All these women are turning how people think about Provence rosé on its head as it is rare to go to such measures to pick out particular plots and give tons of resources to express such an isolated sense of place, as simply the words “Provence rosé” will sell out all the wines before the summer is finished.

But that isn’t enough for the Vranken women as they want to show the world that Provence is so much more. They have a historic property ideal for showcasing the hidden wealth within the area’s soils.

2023 Château La Gordonne ‘Vérité du Terroir’ Rosé, Côtes de Provence, Provence, France: 50% of Grenache, 20% Vermentino (Rolle), 20% Cinsault, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% Tibouren coming from vines between 20 to 30 years old. A quick note about the Tibouren black-skinned grape as it is native to the Provence area, and although an unknown variety, the Vranken family is committed to keeping this historical grape that goes back to the 6th century. The Drinks Business

A dozen luxury rosés for fine wine drinkers.

Fine pink wines are a newly-expanded area of the drinks world, and an exciting and indulgent one too. Following our Global Rosé Masters tasting competition, we pick out 12 of the best examples money can buy – taking in bottles from South Africa and Spain, Portugal and Italy, as well as, of course, Provence – although our ultimate rosé comes from the Languedoc.

As for the bottles below, these are not just delicious rosés, but great drinks, proving that being pretty and pale doesn’t preclude wine from being fine.

CHÂTEAU MINUTY 281, 2023

• Producer: Château Minuty
• Region: Provence
• Country: France
• Grape varieties: 90% Grenache, 5% Rolle, 5% Syrah
• Residual sugar: 0.51g/l
• Approx. retail price: £55

One of the highest-scoring wines of this year’s competition, this top-end expression from Château Minuty – called 281 after the Pantone number for the blue on the bottle – uses a prized plot of old-vine Grenache, complemented by a touch of Rolle and Syrah. The combination yields a wine with depth, featuring lovely peachy notes, along with white cherry and wild strawberry, complemented by some zesty grapefruit and delicate, white pepper-like spice. A bone-dry, persistent and intense rosé with plenty of flavour, but delicacy and elegance too. (Patrick Schmitt MW)

YSIOS ROSÉ, 2023

• Region: Rioja
• Country: Spain
• Grape variety: 100% Garnacha
• Residual sugar: 1.6g/l
• Approx. retail price: £40

A fantastic find from Spain, this pure Garnacha rosado from Rioja’s Bodegas Ysios comes in a beautiful bottle that’s completely clear to show off the pale pink liquid – a much lighter shade than one would expect from Iberia. Taste-wise, it’s rich in flavours from white cherry to sweet red berries, with a touch of pomegranate too, while the finish features lingering characters of pink grapefruit, peach, then redcurrant and lemon zest. Intense and fruity, but bone-dry and deliciously refreshing. (Patrick Schmitt MW)

LE CIRQUE DES GRIVES, CHÂTEAU LA GORDONNE BIO, 2022

A magnificent rosé using very old-vine Cinsault and Grenache from the great organic Provençal estate that is Château La Gordonne. Layers of flavour feature, from ripe melon to white-fleshed peach, lemon zest to orange blossom, along with a touch of white pepper and redcurrant. While zesty and slightly chalky in texture, this refreshing rosé has plenty of fruit to make the mid-palate full and soft, without any sweetness. Delicious. (Patrick Schmitt MW)

WOMEN OF THE WORLD, PINOTAGE ROSE, 2023

• Producer:  Aaldering Vineyards & Wines
• Region: Stellenbosch
• Country: South Africa
• Grape varieties: 100% Pinotage
• Residual sugar: 1.2g/l

A magnum-only limited-edition rosé from the Western Cape, this wine proves the quality potential of the Pinotage grape as a source of serious, salmon-pink refreshment. Stylistically, it’s an intense and fruity rosé – more so than one would find in Provence – but manages to combine such power with a lovely mouth-watering, bone-dry finish, to ensure it’s both fruity and bright. Flavour-wise, it mixes notes of strawberry jam and sweet cherry with some white-fleshed peach and double cream, followed by a touch of ruby grapefruit, and lemon-zest too. A versatile rosé that would match grilled meats, as well as white fish. (Patrick Schmitt MW)

ROSA 32 LEVANT, 2022

• Producer: Rosa 32
• Region: Côte-de-Provence
• Grape varieties: 35% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 25% Rolle (Vermentino)
• Residual sugar: 2g/l
• Approx. retail price: £35.00

Located in Provence, Rosa 32 produces wines in accordance with organic processes and the terroir factors, the most important here being the ‘levant’ winds. This example is based on 4 of the 18 varieties grown: Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle. Pale peach in hue, the light-bodied wine shows lively acidity framing red cherry, pomegranate and cranberry fruit. Mineral and chalky notes add interest to the beautifully defined palate. The wine will form a perfect complement to sushi, the hint of astringency adding grip to counterbalance the richness of the fish. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)

ROSA CÉLESTE BY QUINTA DA GAIVOSA, 2021

• Producer: Alves de Sousa
• Region: Douro
• Country: Portugal
• Grape varieties: 80% Tinta Cão, 20% Touriga Nacional
• Approx. retail price: £25

This wine’s name, Rosa Céleste, comes from an ancient shrub rose plant with grey-green leaves and sweet-scented, pale pink flowers. The wine is appropriately named. Delicate, with a very pale rose-gold hue, it exhibits white and red cherries, accented by hints of vanilla pod. Dry, the palate has racy acidity and a hint of tannin giving a little grip to support the deep, concentrated and elegant flavours. This is an exceptional wine that indicates what careful vinification and well-judged oak can do for top-class rosé wines. A revelation, the wine will work well with mushroom-asparagusgreen pea risotto or Beijing Chinese dim-sum. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)

BY CAVES D’ESCLANS, ROCK ANGEL, 2022

• Grape varieties: 48% Grenache, 24% Rolle, 13% Cinsault, 6% Tibouren, 3% Syrah, 3% Carignan, 3% Mourvèdre 
• Residual Sugar: 0.3g/l
• Approx. retail price: £26.50

Sacha Lichine, from a long-standing internationally-renowned wine family, produces fantastic wines. This wine is no exception. Pale peach-pink in colour, the wine has strawberry, raspberry and cranberry fruit with gently used creamy oak and a crushed yellow rose petal accent. Just dry, the mid-weight palate is beautifully balanced between fruit, oak and lively acidity. Textured and layered, this wine is exemplary. A really good choice for Provençal bouillabaisse. MARCHESI FRESCOBALDI, AUREA GRAN ROSÉ 2022

• Producer: Marchesi Frescobaldi
• Region: Tuscany
• Country: Italy
• Grape varieties: 70% Syrah, 30% Vermentino
• Residual sugar: 2.3g/l
• Approx. retail price: £30

With a well-established history dating back to at least 1300, the Tuscan house of Frescobaldi has little to prove. This pristine gem is a tribute to the many artisans who have fashioned the Frescobaldi wines for centuries. Very pale peach in colour, the wine shows wild strawberry and vibrant red cherry fruit, accented by gentle, creamy oak. The mid-weight palate is well-defined, with fresh acidity and a hint of grainy texture adding interest. Concentrated and lingering on the finish, the wine will be an excellent match for chicken salad with red capsicum and celery in choux pastry. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)

CHIVITE COLECCIÓN 125 ROSADO, IGP RIBERAS, 2022

• Producer: Bodegas Chivite
• Region: Navarra
• Grape varieties: 57% Garnacha, 24% Tempranillo, 19% Syrah
• Residual sugar: 0.4g/l

Bodegas Chivite has been located in the Navarra town of Cintruénigo since 1637, and doing a cracking job of wine production for 10 generations. Renowned for rosados, Chivite lives up to expectations with this wine, which has a pale salmon colour with intense summer pudding fruits, and a soft meringue and vanilla pod overlay. Dry, the palate shows lively acidity supporting the well-defined flavours. Sappy and savoury and showing a little astringent tannic grip, the wine will suit grilled lobster with clarified butter. LES CLANS, 2022

• Producer: Château d’Esclans
• Grape varieties: 86% Grenache, 12% Rolle, 2% Tibouren
• Approx. retail price: £65

If you’ve never tried barrel-aged rosé, then you should give Les Clans a go. At first surprising, the aromatics are reminiscent of white Burgundy, or perhaps a fine Bordeaux blanc, with notes of ripe citrus mixed with toasted marshmallow. These are far removed from the typical scents of pink wine, let alone the delicate characters of Provençal rosé. But then, when you drink it, you see how high-quality oak and great Grenache-based pink wines can be a wonderful marriage. Not only do the white cherry and peachy flavours nicely complement the vanilla pod and white chocolate notes, but there’s also a lovely textural union, as fruit, oak and acidity combine to produce something fleshy, creamy and zesty. CHÂTEAU GASSIER, ELEVAE, 2019

• Producer: Château Gassier
• Grape varieties: 45% Syrah, 45%
• Grenache, 10% Rolle
• Residual sugar: 1.26g/l

This fascinating rosé, which is aged for two years in Austrian oak barrels, is a top expression from the great Château Gassier, and a notable addition to the world of ‘serious’ pink wines. Not only is the rosé already almost five years old, but it also employs a range of vessels, including wooden demi-muids, to ferment and age the wines. The result is a complex rosé with a very pale peach and salmon colour, and characters that are a mix of juicy berries and oxidative, dried fruit flavours too. In some ways reminiscent of a classic white Rioja, there is a combination of nuts and vanilla, with some peach and pear, then apple skin and a sour cider-like note on the finish, giving the rosé a refreshing and slightly bitter edge. GARRUS, 2022

The great barrel-aged rosé that is Garrus is still a benchmark in the niche world of fine, age-worthy pink wines. Loaded with lovely fruit flavours of white-fleshed cherry, juicy pear and ripe peach, along with redcurrant and ruby grapefruit, one can also expect to find oak-sourced characters of vanilla and toast, and even a touch of meringue, as well as some fine tannins to bring a pleasant, drying sensation to the finish. A delicious drop that’s pretty and serious at the same time. Perfect for summer salads, creamy fish dishes or just sipping in the sun with nothing more than a plate of grilled almonds. CLOS DU TEMPLE, 2023

The ultimate statement rosé, Clos du Temple is striking for its high price, distinctive packaging and powerful flavours. It’s the latter that gained it the title of Global Rosé Master in this year’s competition and, if one looks at the scores, the highest average of the tasting – making it our best pink wine of 2024. So, what do we love about this rosé? It’s a more-ish mix of grilled nuts, charred bread, creamy vanilla and then a combination of peach and lemon, wild strawberry and pineapple, redcurrant and white pepper. And it’s not just full in flavour, but texture too, with a lovely, soft, oily mid-palate mouthfeel, but a fresh finish, with a hint of bitter grapefruit to make you salivate. (Patrick Schmitt MW)

With high-quality judges and a unique sampling process, The Global Rosé Masters provides a chance for your wines to shine. The 2024 competition was judged on 2 May at Great Scotland Yard Hotel in London, employing experienced judges. The top wines were awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze medals according to their result, and those expressions that stood out as being outstanding received the ultimate accolade – the title of Rosé Master.
