Effective Ways to Block Instagram on an iPhone

Learn how to block the Instagram app on an iPhone

Have you tried to uninstall the Instagram app from your iPhone, just to reinstall it a few days later? If so, you may have wondered whether it's possible to block the Instagram app entirely - without allowing you the possibility to reinstall it later on.

iPhone users seeking to reduce screen time  (time spent online) should be familiar with iOS's Screen Time settings. However, while Screen Time can technically be used to prevent you from installing an app, it's by no means the most effective way to do this. But how do you truly block the Instagram app?

• Go beyond Screen Time app blocking with more comprehensive blocking to disable both the Instagram app and Instagram website viewed in Safari.
• Block the Instagram app in a harder to bypass way with Apple's better Screen Time alternative .

In this guide, I'll start by walking you through Screen Time settings that will limit the Instagram app or prevent you from installing it again. However, if you want to truly block the app, I'll also go over more the advanced techniques that will block Instagram entirely.

How to Block the Instagram App on an iPhone

The most effective way to block Instagram is to use the Tech Lockdown DNS Content Policy to completely disable the app.

A DNS Content Policy doesn't prevent Instagram from being installed, but it will prevent the app from connecting to the internet. This can be useful if you want to schedule your Instagram usage, which we'll take a look at later on.

If you want to block Instagram specifically, you can easily create a Blocklist Rule to block both the application and website.

If you have  connected to Tech Lockdown's filter  with your iPhone, you might also consider installing it on your computer or home router - that way, you aren't tempted to use Instagram away from your iPhone. 

In addition to creating a DNS Policy, you can also use Apple's built-in parental controls to block Instagram.

You can start off by blocking the instagram.com mobile website, usually accessed in the Safari browser on iPhone.

Most people don't use the web version of Instagram. If you have the app version installed on your iPhone, you can use the Allowed Apps section of Screen Time External link icon toggle disable the Instagram app.

The problem with this standard iPhone app blocking approach is that the app has to already installed.

If you want to prevent Instagram from being installed in the first place, lets you prevent any new apps from being installed by setting Installing Apps to Don't Allow.

Unfortunately, this will completely disable the App Store. While this might sound like a good thing, it means that apps won't automatically update, which will eventually cause some apps to stop working correctly.

A better approach would be to use Apple's alternative to Screen Time to create App Blocklists. This alternative is called supervised mode .

If you want to disable the entire App Store , you can do this in a better way compared to screen time by still allowing automatic app updates.

Supervising a device can be a confusing process, but we make step-by-step instructions available to Tech Lockdown members.

Scheduling Instagram Access on an iPhone

Instead of blocking Instagram completely, you can schedule its usage on your iPhone.

You can schedule Instagram access using the same DNS Content Policy we talked about earlier.

I've enabled a scheduled DNS rule  for distractions so that I won't be distracted by Instagram outside my lunch break.

This rule preset includes Instagram, but you can also create a rule specifically for Instagram as well.

If you combine Screen Time settings with your scheduled block rule, then you can further improve your blocking solution by setting an "App Limit" for the Instagram app:

I strongly recommend combining both options to get the best possible scheduling option for your iPhone. Screen Time settings alone aren't going to be the best option for you if you're self-managing . Screen Time as been designed for productivity, not content blocking.

Use a Passcode to Prevent Changing Screen Time Settings

Screen Time lets you set a Passcode to lock your settings, however, we don't believe this is very effective:

• The passcode to lock screen time is very easy to remember, being only four digits long.
• The passcode can be easily reset by tapping "Forgot my Passcode".

Screen Time was designed to improve productivity - not block apps outright. To get around these limitations, you can use a secondary Apple ID to lock your iOS settings.

First, you'll need to create your secondary Apple ID External link icon .

After you have a secondary ID, a passcode, scroll down on the Screen Time page. When prompted, select the option that says "This is My Child's iPhone".

Going Further with Bypass Prevention

When it comes to dealing with addictive content online and the subsequent bad habits, I've found that a multi-layered approach is essential. Crafting effective blocking systems is what we focus on at Tech Lockdown.

However, you might need to go further in some cases with more of a focus on bypass prevention.

Here's what I mean by that. For iPhone:

• Screen Time is  fairly easy to bypass , especially if you are self-managing.
• Some people are highly motivated to get around blockers to access addictive content

While there are some sites that I find don't like Safari for various reasons, this particular issue is only seen on Instagram.

I have done all the things on the list but unfortunately no change.

5. Temporarily Disable VPN

Ein anderer Nachteil: Die Erweiterung kann leicht entfernt werden. Hier finden Sie, wie Sie damit Instagram auf Firebox blockieren:

• Suchen Sie Block Site . Wählen Sie das erste aus den Suchergibnissen aus.

Methode 3. So blockieren Instagram auf dem Windows-Computer mit Hosts File

Instagram will not load in Safari

Anyone know why this might be happening? When I load instagram, the page doesn't load properly and instead I just get a white page with the instagram logo in grey in the center of the page. I use Wipr to block ads, but even if I completely turn it off in extensions and quit and reload Safari, same thing. I don't know what else to do at this point. I've cleared website data, history, etc, I've tried restarting, nothing works. Any ideas?

reboot your modem/router? then your mac? or change your dns settings... something's up, instagram works on both my macs in safari, always. & maybe someone else has an idea...

All of a sudden i got the same issue today, after updating to 12.2.1, just a blank screen and an insta grey logo in the center. On firefox works fine.

Same happening here. Started around 4PM (Brazil/SP Time) and still got the same blank page with grey logo. Started on Monterrey 12.2 and persists, even after updating to 12.2.1 Anyone knows how to fix this? Seems like and M1 issue, since 2 mates with M1 had this, and one with intel mac doesn't  

Forgot to say instagram works well on Chrome, this only happens when using Safari  

Same here (Germany), must've started in the last few days. Also on a 2020 M1 MBP with 12.2 and now 12.2.1.

Check for any errors in the Javascript console. It can be activated by: enabling the Develop menu under Safari -> Preferences -> Advanced -> 'Show Develop menu in menu bar' Then Develop -> Show Javascript console It may give a clue as to what is happening

Now 8 hours later (Mac was on Sleep during the time) it magically works again. The JavaScript console didn't show any errors when it didn't work, by the way.

Similar issue here. Instagram loads, but when I try to log in (with the correct password saved in Safari), I get the following error message in red: "There was a problem logging you into Instagram. Please try again soon." This happens only in Safari. If I switch to Firefox (which I don't prefer), I can log in to Instagram. I've tried disabling all extensions, and Private Relay is off. This is nuts.

Instagram won't load links from other websites - I get a flash of Instagram then it redirects and I get a blank screen. It's frustrating as am developing website and need to check links - again only happens with Safari. I made a new thread on Mac Community https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254411847 I too cleared all caches, history and disabled content blocker. Instagram itself loads and I discovered that Safari will only load links to other Instagram accounts IF I am logged into instagram.

„Dein Konto wurde vorübergehend gesperrt“ – was mit einer vermeintlich harmlosen Nachricht beginnt, wird für passionierte Instagram-Fans schnell zur Tortur. Ist der Instagram-Account gesperrt, dauert es im besten Fall nur 24 bis 48 Stunden bis zur Freigabe. Manche Konten bleiben aber dauerhaft gesperrt. Im schlimmsten Fall bedeutet das: Die gesamte aufgebaute Reichweite, die vielen Follower und natürlich auch der produzierte Content – alles ist weg.

Mit der richtigen Vorgehensweise ist es aber möglich, eine Instagram-Sperre aufzuheben . Dieser Beitrag zeigt, wann Instagram ein Konto sperrt und welche Möglichkeiten Betroffene haben, Instagram zu entblocken.

Instagram-Accounts werden dann gesperrt, wenn die Social-Media-Plattform einen Verstoß gegen die Nutzungsbedingungen, Gemeinschaftsrichtlinien oder die Branded-Content-Richtlinien feststellt. Liegen schwerwiegende Vergehen (z. B. Terrorismus, Gewaltverherrlichung, Hatespeech , Verkauf von Schusswaffen oder Drogen, Angebot von sexuellen Dienstleistungen) vor, sind sich die Kontoinhaber ihrer Schuld häufig bereits bewusst.

Viele Verstöße passieren hingegen aus Unwissenheit oder sogar unbemerkt. Typische Beispiele:

• Angebot von Babykatzen aus dem eigenen Haushalt zum Verkauf
• Verdacht einer Phishing-Attacke (Login von einem öffentlichen Gerät oder vom Ausland aus, Nutzung von Drittanbieter-Erweiterungen mit Phishing-Verdacht)
• Posten mit einem Fake-Profil
• Urheber- oder Markenrechtsverletzung (z. B. Nutzung eines Fotos ohne Zustimmung des Urhebers )
• Posten von Nacktbildern oder anstößigen Fotos
• Kauf von Abonnenten
• Hackerangriff auf das Konto (Sperre, um weiteren Schaden abzuwenden)

Eine Instagram-Sperre kann außerdem verhängt werden, wenn der Algorithmus der Plattform Spam vermutet . Dieser Eindruck kann auch durch eine vermeintlich normale Nutzung von Instagram entstehen, nämlich wenn das Verhalten eines Nutzers von seinem sonstigen Verhalten abweicht. Etwa wenn sehr viele Direktnachrichten auf einmal verschickt werden, vielleicht sogar noch mit identischem Inhalt. Oder wenn sehr viele Beiträge innerhalb kurzer Zeit gepostet, geliked oder kommentiert werden.

In solchen Fällen werden oft erst einmal nur die betreffenden Instagram-Handlungen blockiert . Der Nutzer kann dann etwa nichts mehr posten oder keine Direct Messages verschicken. Im Wiederholungsfall kommt es aber oft zu längeren Sperren oder dem dauerhaften Ausschluss .

Übrigens behält sich Instagram als Teil von Meta vor, Accounts auch dann zu sperren, wenn es eigentlich nur zu Problemen mit dem Facebook-Konto gekommen ist. So muss die Sperrung gar nicht zwingend mit dem Verhalten auf dem Instagram-Portal zu tun haben.

Hat Instagram ein Konto gesperrt, kommt es bei der richtigen Vorgehensweise darauf an, ob es sich um eine temporäre oder eine dauerhafte Blockierung handelt.

a) Instagram-Account vorübergehend gesperrt

Eine temporäre Sperre dauert gewöhnlich nur 24 bis 48 Stunden . Betroffene können also im einfachsten Fall diese Zeitspanne einfach aussitzen. Kam es jedoch in der Vergangenheit bereits mehrfach zu Blockaden, kann die temporäre Sperrung bis zu 30 Tage andauern.

Um die Instagram-Kontosperrung aufzuheben , empfehlen sich diese Verhaltensweisen:

• Beim Verdacht einer Phishing-Attacke fordert Instagram den Kontoinhaber auf, sich zu verifizieren und für mehr Sicherheit die Zwei-Faktor-Authentifizierung zu aktivieren. Dieser Vorgabe sollte er Folge leisten. Der Nachweis der Identität kann auch über die Verknüpfung des Kontos mit dem Facebook Business Manager erfolgen.
• Manchmal führt die Anmeldung von einem anderen Gerät aus oder die Neuinstallation der App in Kombination mit dem Löschen aller Cookies zum Erfolg.
• In der Kontenübersicht des Instagram-Kontos gibt es oft mehrere verknüpfte Konten. Finden sich Unbekannte darunter, sollten diese entfernt werden, ebenso wie die Berechtigungen für nicht benötigte Drittanbieter-Apps .

b) Instagram-Account dauerhaft gesperrt

Schwieriger wird es, wenn ein Instagram-Account dauerhaft gesperrt wurde. Dann sollte der Kontoinhaber zunächst über das offizielle Formular Einspruch gegen die Kontosperrung einlegen. Dabei empfiehlt sich eine Stellungnahme, warum die Blockade des Instagram-Kontos aus seiner Sicht nicht gerechtfertigt ist.

Leider bringt der Einspruch in der Praxis oft nicht den gewünschten Erfolg – das Instagram-Konto bleibt gesperrt . Betroffene können sich dann direkt an den Instagram-Support wenden und ihn per E-Mail und unter Fristsetzung zur Entsperrung des Kontos auffordern.

Tipp : In der Regel werden gesperrte Instagram-Konten nach rund 90 Tagen endgültig gelöscht . Die Aufhebung der Sperre und die Wiederherstellung der Inhalte ist dann auch mit rechtlichen Mitteln nicht mehr möglich. Schnelles Handeln ist deshalb wichtig. Instagram räumt sich das Recht, Accounts oder einzelne Handlungsoptionen zu sperren, in den eigenen Nutzungsbedingungen ein. Hier heißt es:

„Wenn du gegen diese Nutzungsbedingungen oder unsere Richtlinien verstößt, wenn du wiederholt die Rechte am geistigen Eigentum anderer verletzt oder wenn wir gesetzlich dazu verpflichtet sind, können wir – unbeschadet unseres Kündigungsrechts aus wichtigem Grund – die Bereitstellung des Dienstes für dich ganz oder teilweise verweigern oder einstellen.“

Trotz dieses recht allgemein gehaltenen Hinweises und ihres „Hausrechts“ dürfen die Macher von Instagram nicht ohne Grund Sperren verhängen . Dies hat etwa das Landgericht München II entschieden: Bei einer unberechtigten und nicht ausreichend begründeten Blockade kann Instagram verpflichtet sein, das Konto wieder freizugeben (Beschluss vom 16. Dezember 2020, Az. 11 O 5166/20).

Kommen Betroffene mit ihrem Einspruch und der Kontaktaufnahme zum Instagram-Support nicht weiter, sollten sie einen Anwalt einschalten . Dieser kann oft schneller und wirkungsvoller eine Kommunikation mit der Social-Media-Plattform herstellen und eine Entsperrung des Accounts erreichen .

Falls Instagram die Sperre nicht aufhebt, kann der Weg bei unberechtigten Sperren über den Erlass einer einstweiligen Verfügung führen. Dies ist jedoch nur möglich, wenn der Antrag innerhalb eines Monats ab Kenntnisnahme von der Kontosperrung gestellt wird. Ist die Frist bereits verstrichen, ist auch der Klageweg möglich.
