However, if you are overwhelmed, don’t know where to start, or only have the time to do one or two Cancun private tours during your Yucatan itinerary, the ones I would recommend are the early morning tour to Chichen Itza and Ik Kil cenote, the private tour to 4 cenotes, or the private tour of Izamal, Valladolid, Chocolate Museum and Tequila Factory.

Cenotes are a highlight of visiting Southern Mexico for a lot of people and a must-have experience while you’re in the Yucatan. Cenotes are natural freshwater sinkholes that were formed when the Chicxulub meteor crashed into the earth some 65 million years ago. 

(Yes, the same meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs and more than 90% of other life forms on Earth!) The meteor caused the earth’s surface to weaken and collapse. 

The result was the creation of more than 7,000 sinkholes (cenotes) across the Yucatan peninsula. This private tour will take you to the stunning Ecoparque Cenotes Zapote nestled in the heart of the lush, tropical jungle.

We felt safe, well cared for and better educated on the fascinating Mayan culture thanks ti your efforts!

This archeological site was on my bucket list for decades and knowing that the site is a 2-1/2 to 3 hour drive from our resort still did not make it appealing to take a bus ride round trip. So it was a no brainer for us to spend more and reserve a private vehicle and guide with “Make Your Own Tour”. Our driver, Miguel, was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge for the Yucatan peninsula and Mayan people. His narration during the round trip made the long drive seem much shorter. Before entering the park we stopped road side at a Mayan food cart and ate breakfast tortas along some of the local people. At Chichen Itza, Miguel allowed us to spend as much time as we wanted viewing all the archeological structures. Then we had a two hour stop at a Cenote for a swim and a buffet lunch. The cenote swim and lunch was included in the cost of the tour along with the admission tickets for Chichen Itza, The only additional expenses we had was our breakfast and souvenir we purchased. We were not on a schedule and Miguel asked if we wanted to visit a Mayan cemetery to compliment his narration of the Mayan culture. We took him up on this offer after being reassured that doing so is completely acceptable in their culture. There were plenty of stops for “Los Banos” and Miguel would always let us know how far away the next bathroom stop would be. His SUV was equipped with a cooler with bottled water and juices for us. He asked if there were any other sites we wished to stop at during our return trip but we felt we already had a full day and just went back to our resort. This will be a full day excursion so set your expectations to depart around 6:00 – 6:30 am and not return until about 4:00 pm. Miguel was punctual for our departure. We only brought our phones, some cash, towels and wore swim suits under our clothing with Teva sandals. Wish we had waterproof bags for our cellphones to take selfies while swimming in the cenote. Scheduling this in the middle of our week stay at an all inclusive resort was a great way to have one day outside the resort and still be back for dinner. Highly recommend this tour and vendor.

Gabriel did an amazing job. He guided my wife and I on what we consider the best part of our Mexico vacation. He was courteous and accommodating. Made a special stop at Starbucks for the wife! His knowledge and familiarity with Chichen Itza was impressive. Afterwords we decided to skip the planned meal for a different place off the beaten path. A true authentic Mexican dining experience. Worth every Penny to skip the group tour and experience it privately. Highly recommended and I’d do it again.

A five-star experience, I must say! Captain Bertrand was an incredible host, a true bon vivant, and an absolute master in the kitchen. We snorkeled, paddleboarded, and swam in stunning locations, far from the  crowds. We were even fortunate enough to encounter some tortues sauvages along the way. The reason why I love private tours more is that you have more space for yourself on the boat or the bus and you can adjust the schedule at your convenience within certain limits, of course.

Also, you don’t need to depend on other people’s needs and you can ask your guide all the questions you want.

In the case of a boat, you have more space to move around and sit where you want. In my case, as a photographer, it’s my main priority to be able to move around as I please.

Resorts tend to make deals with one specific company only so your choice is limited. Also, unless it’s a private tour, the resort tours tend to be more crowded, although not always.

Is Chichen Itza worth it from Cancun?

Yes, totally worth it, especially if you have never seen it. You could also rent a car and go on your own, choose a group tour or a private excursion from Cancun. Whatever suits you best, but Chichen Itza is a must-visit!

Do excursions get cheaper closer to the date?

Generally, they don’t but it can be the case when they need people to fill the bus. It’s less likely that it happens for private tours, though.

Which site is best for booking trips?

I always use either Viator or in the case of Chichen Itza, I use Chichenitza.com .But I always check the reviews first and I would book all those that have at least 4 stars or more.

Is it cheaper to pre-book excursions?

I don’t think it’s cheaper, but it gives you the chance to secure the tour in the day you want to do it before it gets full. So if you have limited time I would pre-book a tour to make sure you can do it when you want. If you are more flexible it’s not that necessary but, still, I love to be organized.

Even if you don’t want to brave the often powerful waves, travelers can go on crocodile boat tours through the mangroves, witness the glowing bioluminescent plankton in two of the nearby lagoons at night, or visit Casa Wabi, a contemporary art and architecture museum. 

Isla Holbox

If you’re really itching to escape the crowds, head to Isla Holbox, a 26-mile-long car-free island located right off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. While the island has grown in popularity and therefore development, it still offers travelers a secluded beachside retreat. Travelers can wander the streets, which are paved in sand, barefoot or in golf carts – the main mode of transportation on the skinny island. To get there, travelers fly to Cancun International Airport then travel by car for two hours to Chiquila to board a 15-minute ferry ride to the island. While it may take more effort to visit Isla Holbox over Cancun or Cabo, it’s well worth it. The resort town ranks high for natural beauty, including bioluminescent lagoons and whale shark tours, and safety. 

Those seeking out the sun and sand will find Huatulco to be paradise with its 36 beaches and nine bays, and endlessly sunny weather. Less developed than Puerto Vallarta and Cancun, the small resort town offers activities like kayaking, hiking waterfalls or scuba diving, and is bordered by the Huatulco National Park. Of course, travelers can just relax on the beach as well. To get there, travelers can fly into Bahias de Huatulco International Airport, a short hour-and-a-half flight from Mexico City. “The international airport is only 10 minutes away, and the area attracts tourists looking for a more authentic Mexican experience and small-town feeling,” said Brent May, founder and CEO of Bayside Real Estate.

However, it still has much to offer travelers, ranking high for culture and safety by Far Homes. “This charming coastal town is best explored by bicycle,” said Gaby Ortiz, sales manager at Maya Ocean, a local real estate broker. “As you pedal through its scenic streets, you can lose track of time, immersed in the natural beauty and tranquility of your surroundings.” To get to Mahahual, travelers can fly into Chetumal International Airport and drive for about two hours. Travelers eager to experience vibrant marine life will find Mahahual to be the perfect destination. Spanning nearly 72 miles, the largest barrier reef system in Mexico and the Caribbean, Banco Chinchorro, is just an hour-long boat ride away. The UNESCO biosphere reserve is home to coral, American crocodiles, rays, turtles, nurse sharks and even sunken ships. On land, travelers can visit the Museum of Costa Maya and the Chacchoben Mayan ruins to learn more about local history and culture. 

Todos Santos 

About an hour’s drive from Los Cabos International Airport on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, Todos Santos is known as a haven for artists and creatives as well as its colonial architecture. Nestled between the coast and the desert, the town ranked highly for natural beauty, safety and culture with Far Homes.
