Well, if you have just head to the Q1 Building. It’s the only beachside observation deck in the whole of Australia, and you won’t regret taking the lift (or climbing) to the top of this amazing piece of architecture.

What to do there: There’s plenty you can do at the highest landmark in The Gold Coast. Of course, start off by taking in the awe-inspiring views and make sure you get a few killer shots for Insta! If you’re feeling really brave, then this also offers the highest building climb in Australia. Reach the 270m summit of the skyscraper which offers unparalleled views of the Gold Coast and out to the ocean. If you’re travelling with a friend but you’re not so crazy on heights, you can always wait for them inside the restaurant, which is one of the best places to eat in The Gold Coast!

#5 – Wet ‘n’ Wild

Why it’s awesome: If there’s one thing that screams holiday more than anything else, it’s a water park. And since the Gold Coast boasts the best one in Australia, we simply had to put it on our list! Everyone knows Wet ‘n’ Wild – it’s famous all over the world. And this one has everything you’d expect – relaxing lazy rivers, huge adrenaline junkie slides, and lots of places for the little ones if you’re travelling with family! It’s the perfect place to keep mum, dad, and the kids entertained.

What to do there: Get wet! Get wild! It’s the perfect place for a fun day away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Just make sure you keep topping up your sunscreen during the day, as the heat can get pretty relentless here. There’s more than just slides too. The Skycoaster is an adrenaline-fuelled activity that should only be attempted by the bravest! The FlowRider is a cool way to test out your surfing skills in a totally safe shark-free environment!

#6 – Springbrook National Park – A beautiful outdoor place to visit in The Gold Coast

• Spot different birdlife in the National Park
• One of the major points of interest in Queensland

Why it’s awesome: So, this one isn’t actually in the Gold Coast, but we couldn’t overlook such a beautiful spot. You don’t even need to drive out into the Gold Coast Hinterland for an hour to find this absolutely stunning national park. Swap the golden sands for lush green rainforest to have a real outdoor adventure and a break from the hustle and bustle of the city! Springbrook gives you a chance to add wildlife watching, hiking, and a whole host of other activities to your Gold Coast itinerary!

What to do there: It’s good to plan a little in advance for your trip to Springbrook, as there a few things that you may not have considered bringing! First up is your swimsuit. The National Park has some of the coolest swimming spots in Queensland and you’ll not want to leave without taking a dip. Binoculars are a must-have for ornithologists, as Springbrook has diverse birdlife which you’ll be lucky to see outside of captivity! Of course, one of the best ways to see the park is on foot, so bring some comfy boots and get out onto the hiking trails!

#7 – Miami Marketta – A must-see for foodies

• Head here on a weekend to try a range of street food
• Enjoy music and cocktails too!

Why it’s awesome: Want to transport yourself to the markets of Bangkok? How about a Barcelona tapas bar? Australia is pretty far away from anywhere by plane, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get authentic and tasty food from across the globe! Miami Marketta just happens to be the best place in the Gold Coast for that. There are over 25 food vendors to choose from, so your Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday dinner is sorted. There’s sure to be something that’ll tickle your taste buds!

What to do there: It’s a great spot for foodies, so why not spend the first half hour or so just wandering around and taking in the different aromas before settling on your final option. Although the good thing is you can order loads of little small dishes from the range of different choices on offer! That’s definitely what we’d do… To accompany the delicious food, why not sample a cocktail or just enjoy the great live music that’s always on. Miami Marketta really is a feast for the senses!

#8 – Burleigh Heads National Park – A beautiful and scenic place to check out in The Gold Coast

• Pick up some artisan souvenirs from the arts and crafts market
• A great spot for a picnic when visiting the Gold Coast

Why it’s awesome: If you liked the sound of Springbrook National Park but it seemed a bit of a hassle to get to, there’s one much closer that is another gorgeous outdoor space within a stone’s throw of the city! Burleigh Heads is wedged between Surfers’ Paradise and Coolangatta (where you’ll find some of the Gold Coasts best hostels if you’d like to stay in the area), and it’s a popular spot with locals as well as tourists. Spend the day here to escape from the concrete jungle of The Gold Coast and come back feeling refreshed and recuperated!

What to do there: Where to start?! There are some fantastic swimming spots in Burleigh Heads . The protected waters are a lot quieter than those further north at Surfers’ Paradise, so you’ve much less chance of having to dodge a rogue surfboard! Another great activity is taking the walk track from Burleigh to the stunning Tallebudgera Creek. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for Aussie wildlife such as koalas, echidnas, and even the odd sea eagle!

#9 – Gold Coast Wax Museum and Chamber of Horrors – Quite the quirky place in The Gold Coast

• Enter the chamber of horrors if you dare
• One of the more unusual things to do in The Gold Coast!

Why it’s awesome: So, first of all, we should state that this isn’t on your standard Gold Coast itinerary. But we’re going to tell you why this intriguing place should be on yours! Like the famous Madame Tussaud’s in London, it’s filled with waxworks of world leaders and some of the most famous people of our time. However, this bizarre attraction in The Gold Coast has a bit of a twist which will leave you chilled to the bone! Probably…

What to do there: After you’ve posed for photos or taken a selfie with Gandhi, Jack Sparrow, or the British Royal Family, it’s time for the chamber of horrors. In here, you’ll find Dracula, Frankenstein, and loads of werewolves. Of course. If that’s not enough, there are genuine torture devices and waxwork recreations – it’s often hard to tell them apart! If you’re a horror movie fan or looking for a touch of the macabre, don’t miss this weird Gold Coast must see!

#10 – Cable Park and Southport Cable Hut – An unknown (but awesome) place to visit in The Gold Coast!

• Relax in the shade of the palm trees
• One of the lesser visited points of interest in The Gold Coast

Why it’s awesome: Just a short walk from Main Beach, you could be forgiven for not really noticing this place. And sure, it’s probably not a place to visit for the aesthetics. However, when it comes to history and feats of engineering, this little non-descript hut might just be the most impressive place in the Gold Coast. The reason it’s so special is that this hut housed the Pacific cable, which ran 4,000 miles from Australia to the US. Even more surprising is that it was laid on the ocean floor with no problems!

What to do there: Visiting the Southport Cable Hut and Cable Park is more of a quick activity. Do it on the way to Main Beach or to catch a bit of a break from the sun, sea, and sand. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting Gold Coast landmark and there is some information in the park where you can find out more. Astoundingly, this little hut played an important role in news and information being transmitted in both World War One and Two!

A Two Week Itinerary for Brisbane and the Gold Coast

Within a hour’s drive of Brisbane, you’ll find so much to do from a metropolitan getaway, to lush mountains and crystal clear waters. Find somewhere to base yourself in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast and explore from there. Bring your walking shoes, swim wear and sunscreen – you’ll need them all!

You’ll most likely be flying into Brisbane, so start by picking up a Go Card from a train station and you can have access to all trains and buses to get you around. For your first couple of days in Brisbane, follow our 48 hour guide to Brisbane. It will cover you for some seriously good local eats and a trip to the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art.

Hire some camping gear and head out of the city to D’Aguilar National Park for a couple of days of camping. You’ll get a somewhat ‘outback’ Aussie experience out here even though it’s so close to the city. Beautiful country views, walking tracks and you can even have a swim in the local reservoir – what more could you want?

Head back to the city for a couple of days of touristy goodness. Visit the Brisbane City Hall, Museum of Brisbane, see the clock tower and learn the history behind Anzac Square. Pop across the river and visit the Queensland Museum and learn about Australia’s most interesting animals and cultural history.

Hire back some camping gear and head south to the ‘Great Walk’ on the Gold Coast – it will take you a good three days. Be sure to plan it out before hand for a smooth (approx. 54km) journey. You will pass the Gondwana Rainforest, Lamington and Springbrook National Parks and Numinbah Valley. There are plenty of great camping grounds along the way.

Now that you’ve worked hard on your three-day hike, take a couple of days off to enjoy the luxurious and restful options that the Gold Coast has to offer. Stay in one of the best luxury hotels and enjoy the on-site spas, bars, pools and restaurants while you recuperate.

27 Best Day Trips from the Gold Coast & Map

The Gold Coast is located 1 hour south of the Queensland capital, Brisbane. This is where we have an extremely high tourist hub and more than 10 million tourists visit each year. But, sometimes you just want to escape the city and why I have this post today on the best day trips from the Gold Coast.

I’ve been a local to South East Queensland for more than 20 years and spent many weekends and holidays exploring this area. It contains lots of hiking, adrenaline, water sports, finding waterfalls, or swimming.

So, please read on to explore these options and start planning today!

What are the Best Day Trips from the Gold Coast?

I have a huge selection of activities below, together with a specially curated Map to help get you out of your hotel room for the entire day. Whether it’s for a few hours, or several items, I’m sure there is a few things that resonate with you.

1. Lamington National Park

The Lamington National Park was UNESCO World Heritage listed for part of the Gondwana Rainforest in 1994 and is where you’ll find tours to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat . After your scenic drive, you have several different hikes on offer and a popular retreat to visit for a day trip.

The free Tree Top walk (Booyong) is a big favourite, and only 800 metres return along the suspended bridge. It consists of nine suspension bridges around 16 metres above the ground.

2. South Stradbroke Island

Can you believe that South Stradbroke Island is just a short distance from the city life? There are no cars, but it is accessed by water transportation like Boats, riding a Jet Ski , and kayaks. You also will find some nice clear waters, areas to yourself, and beautiful white sandy shores.

You can snorkel here too, but with a lacking of coral around, the underwater creatures can be very random. One popular stop would be visiting the Couran Cove Island Resort, which is located on the west side.

3. Moreton Island

There is a Ferry to Moreton Island leaving from either Pinkenba or from the Brisbane Port. Day trip tours can differ from snorkeling and exploring the wrecks, or spending the day at the Tangalooma Island Resort .

This is your chance for an beachfront escape on the third largest sand island. Along with so much to do, from Snorkelling or diving the wrecks, swimming on the beach/pools, the nightly Wild Dolphin feeding or parasailing. Additionally, on land, you can enjoy the sand dunes, four-wheel driving, or having some cocktails at the bar. 

4. Whale Watching

Check out this seasonal activity around May to November, with the Annual Humpback Whale migration. Each year, some 1,200 humpbacks make an epic 5,000 km journey between Antarctica and Australia and then back again.

Therefore, you have the unique opportunity to venture out on the water and experience this marvel first hand. Enjoy a tour on a comfortable catamaran out on the open water. Ultimately, watching the Humpback whales breach the surface and hopefully put on a show.

5. Theme Parks

All the different Theme Parks are what draw thousands of families and holidaymakers to the region. You have so many Parks to choose from, with their own draw cards and unique attractions and each park will need a whole day to visit. This comes down to water slides, rollercoasters, thrill rides, animals, and plenty of other entertainment.

Purchasing passes from each individual park can be rather costly, but there are ways to save some money with Combo tickets and included transfers . This means SeaWorld, Wet N Wild, Paradise Country & Movieworld are one company, and Dreamworld, White Water World is the other.

6. Lady Elliot Island

Lady Elliot Island is one of your first points to access the The Great Barrier Reef, one of the wonders of the world. And, access to this area, comes from flights that leave Coolangatta. The trip can be expensive, but you can take advantage of the opportunity if you’re not travelling further north on your own.

A day spent at Lady Elliott Island happens to be one of best snorkelling sites , a and chance to swim with turtles, and other marine life. On land, you can explore and learn about the history of the Island, The Lighthouse, and Bird Habitat.

7. Australia Zoo

If you’re a fan of the late Steve Irwin and his family, this zoo is definitely worth visiting. It was founded by the Irwin family and still carries on their legacy today. I think it limits time with a day trip from the Gold Coast, but there are plenty of people who do it. You can even book a tour with transfers , but you definitely have more time in the park with your own car. 

The range of animals in the park has grown over the years, and I really enjoy the lemurs, elephants, and tigers. You can also get your photo taken with a koala or feed the kangaroos, which is a must in Australia! The crocodile show is always a big hit and the last time I visited, I even witnessed a poisonous snake shedding its skin.

8. North Stradbroke Island

The Island of North Stradbroke (or Minjerribah) is a little different from Moreton Island, where you have over 2000 people permanently living there. Therefore, you have plenty of options to get around, beaches to explore, places to eat and drink, public transport, and accommodation.

If you only have the day to explore , then you could start with the following. Hanging out on the beach, surfing, or completing the  Gorge Walk at Point Lookout  would all be a great start.

9. Natural Bridge

Marvel at Natural Bridge, located in the Springbrook National Park and about 1 hour inland from Surfers Paradise. This is a different kind of waterfall where you can watch from above, with the water disappearing into a big hole. Along with underneath, where the waterfall crashes into the waterhole.

Ultimately, rain is always a factor with any waterfall, but this one seems to be running all year round. You can take an easy one-kilometre walking path with a slight elevation and some stairs, but easy for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

10. Purling Brook Falls

The complete Purling Brook Falls hike is about 4 kilometres in length and will take about 2 hours to complete. The track is formed, but there is a steep elevation to get back to the car park. There is a lookout at the top to see the waterfall, but a better view below from the gully.

It’s a loop track, with the waterhole about halfway. However, the waterfall is more prominent in the summer months after the rain. It’s a beautiful walk passing through the eucalypt forest in the Springbrook Plateau and crossing over a suspension bridge.

11. Southbank, Brisbane

Enjoy this trip to Brisbane and go North for a popular entertainment district. The Suburb of South Bank is located straight across the river from Brisbane City and is visited by millions of tourists each year.

You’ll find the Arts district with Museum, the library and stage theatre. Markets are held every weekend, along with special events and festivals. A variety of food and drink options with many cafes and restaurants. Furthermore, catering for those inner-city beachgoers with the man-made, patrolled Street’s Beach.

12. Mount Tamborine

Mount Tamborine National Park is 30 minutes from Surfers Paradise and the perfect spot to include in a short road trip from the city. If you’re seeking a green change and a place to admire the Mountains, then immerse yourself in the local food and arts.

Go chasing waterfalls like Cedar Creek or Curtis Falls, soar above the sky in a Hot Air Balloon, or try some delectable wines. Additionally, there is the Tree Top challenge experience, or strolling along the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk.

13. Mount Warning

Mt Warning is located across the border in New South Wales and 1.5 hours from Surfers Paradise. It’s another activity for those Hiking fans and very challenging to those that aren’t used to elevated walks or lots of stairs.

It’s almost 9 kilometres return and requires a good level of fitness to get up. The track is nicely formed, heaps of stairs, and you might need to stop a few times to catch your breath. Once at the top, the views are amazing and well worth the effort you just put in to get there.

14. Glow Worms

You can  find the incredible glow worms  in the Gold Coast hinterland. This is possible at the Natural Bridge waterfall within Springbrook National Park (only at Night) and around Mount Tamborine (during the day). The glow worms create a magical atmosphere with their bioluminescent glow, making evening tours an enchanting experience. 

The best way to view these natural wonders is on tours with expert guides that offer fascinating insights into their unique lifecycle and habitat. However, you can see them for free (in your own time) at Natural Bridge. But please remember to bring a camera, as the sight of thousands of glow worms illuminating the dark surroundings is unforgettable.

15. Scuba Diving or Snorkelling

Snorkelling or diving in this area is a wonderful way to experience a different side of the Queensland coast – Being Underwater. Obviously, snorkelling is a little more accessible and done anywhere, but the closest I have come to any snorkelling was South Stradbroke Island, which was part of a Kayaking trip from Southport.

Apart from that, If you do have the opportunity to dive, then you are going to come across much more marine life. Learning to dive really changed my life and can open up a whole new world.

16. Kondalilla Falls

Kondalilla Falls is one of my favourite waterfall hiking trails. Located in the stunning hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, the trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and physical challenge. The hike itself is moderately difficult (with a lot of stairs), winding through lush rainforests, towering eucalyptus trees, and scenic lookout points. 

As you make your way down the well-maintained path, the sound of rushing water grows louder, culminating in the breathtaking sight of Kondalilla Falls cascading into a tranquil rock pool below. It’s a brilliant spot for a refreshing swim on a hot day, and the abundant wildlife makes it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. 

17. Scenic Rim

The Scenic Rim encompasses a range of eclectic towns, including Rathdowney, Boonah, Mount Barney, Aratula, and Beaudesert. Each of these towns offers its own unique charm and attractions. Rathdowney is known for its laid-back rural atmosphere and historical museum, while Boonah boasts vibrant arts and crafts communities. 

With its towering peak, Mount Barney is a hotspot for hikers and nature lovers. Aratula is a gateway to several national parks and offers quaint cafes and artisan shops. Beaudesert, the largest of the towns, provides a bustling market scene and a rich history tied to Queensland’s agricultural roots. 

18. Girraween National Park

If you like hiking, then the Girraween National Parks walking trails will be well worth it. There are two different hiking trails that I would recommend, and best to start them both in the mornings. Don’t forget to take enough supplies for the day including, a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, snacks, and a good pair of hiking shoes.

The Pyramid Track is shorter of the two, extremely elevated, and if you can make it to the top, you will see some amazing views and the famous Balancing rock. Alternatively, the Sphinx and Turtle rock hike has elevated sections, but a lot easier for those that can’t do the Pyramid Track. Listen out for a mass amount of cicadas!

19. Queen Mary Falls

Queen Mary Falls , located in the Main Range National Park, is a phenomenal sight that’s easily accessible for almost everyone. The waterfall itself drops 40 meters into a lush, green valley, and the short, well-maintained walking path to the viewing platform ensures that everyone can take in the stunning views. 

For those hiking lovers who seek a bit more adventure, the trail down into the gully offers a closer look at the waterfall’s base and the surrounding rainforest ecosystem. The cool mist from the cascading water and the sweet sounds of the birdlife make this a serene and refreshing experience.

20. Winery Tours

Are you a wine lover looking for a new adventures? Look no further than winery tours (or maybe a craft beer tour)! There are tour options for small and large groups, and they can be tailored to your specific tastes.

This includes romantic tours for couples to group tastings with friends. You’ll get the chance to visit beautiful wineries, learn about the winemaking process, and taste some delicious wines.

21. Hot Air Balloon Ride

A Hot Air Balloon experience is something you’re not going to forget quickly. Expect a very early start and at least 4 to 5 hours to complete. The morning will have you witnessing the setup, blowing the balloon up, enjoying the ride, and finally, packing everything up. This all takes time, but it’s interesting to learn how it all comes together.

Unless your purchase a tour with included transport, you’re probably going to need your own vehicle, or at least hire one. This means most Hot Air balloons leave from open grassy areas and are well away from the big city’s.

22. Surfing

Have you ever wanted to learn to surf or want to find the best places to go surfing for the day? Then look no further and you have so many different beaches stretching over 50 kilometres down the city skyline. Obviously, the waves are dependent on the daily tides and wind, but you will find the locals are always out there somewhere, giving it a go.

As a suggestion, you can find some of the best surfing spots at Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Currumbin Alley, Snapper Rocks, Burleigh Point & Duranbah Beach. These are obviously not your only options and depend on how big you want the waves.

23. Mount Ngungun

Mount Ngungun is a hiking adventure that takes about 45 minutes to reach the summit, but the views from the top are nothing short of spectacular. It’s located in the Glass House Mountains, and this moderately graded hike is perfect for those looking to experience the great outdoors without committing to a full-day trek. 

The trail winds through lush forests and rocky outcrops, offering glimpses of the surrounding landscape along the way. Once at the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the hinterland and ten other neighbouring peaks. 

24. Currumbin Sanctuary

You’re definitely going to have fun at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary . I found this to be a very good park for animal interactions and fewer cages restricting the animals. If you looking at seeing a lot of Australian animals, then this is a great place to start. Plenty of Kangaroos , Emu’s, Birds, Snakes, and so much more.

Additionally, the Lorikeet Bird Feeding happens at 8am and 4pm every day, outside the park. They are wild birds and come down from the local bushland to feed, which is free to watch, or a gold coin donation to help feed.

25. Toowoomba

Toowoomba is the largest inland city in Queensland and offers plenty to do while maintaining a charming, country laid-back feel. Known as the “Garden City,” Toowoomba is famous for its beautifully maintained parks and gardens, with the iconic Queens Park and the Japanese Gardens being top highlights. 

The annual Carnival of Flowers event (September) is a must-see, drawing visitors from all over the country to witness the stunning floral displays and participate in family-friendly activities. The city’s vibrant arts scene includes galleries, theatres, and live music venues, adding a cultural flair to its appeal. 

26. Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a city on it’s own, with it’s beaches, local arts and crafts, diving at Julian Rocks and a backpacker haven. This is where you will be crossing the border and heading down the M1 highway to this well-known hippy town.

The Cape Byron Lighthouse happens to be the most Eastern Point in Australia. So, If you’re keen, there is a nice beachside, elevated hike up the mountain to visit. It’s also full of Unique shopping and dining experiences, and popular staged music festivals.

27. Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is located on the northern side of Brisbane and about two hours away from the Goldy. The  Sunny Coast is very similar to the Goldy , but there is less people and less skyscrapers. It’s known for its beautiful beaches, boutique shopping, and trendy cafes and restaurants. Notable towns on the Sunshine Coast include Noosa, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, and Caloundra, each offering their own unique charm and attractions. 

The main beaches can get quite busy during peak season, but other quieter beaches are nearby, such as Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach. Alternatively, there are shops and  Rockpool  swimming, or you can take the scenic drive along the coast with ocean views and the possibility of spotting dolphins or whales during migration season.

The Great Escape: 4 Days in Brisbane, Gold Coast & Sunshine Coast

Stressed? Burnt out? Bogged down in the winter blues? Prescribe yourself an extra long weekend in Queensland . In four days, I got the dose of sunshine, blue skies and blessed humidity that I’ve been missing in chilly, drizzly Melbourne.

Before last weekend, I’d never considered squeezing in time in Brisbane , the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast in one trip. I live in Melbourne, but grew up in Brisbane, and have always visited those regions individually.

It’s funny how we get so set in our ways, when it comes to our hometowns. I spent four days in Queensland last week and visited Brisbane and both coasts back to back. It was easy and totally doable in a short break, not to mention an overload of South East Queensland’s natural beauty.

You could fly into Coolangatta airport and spend a day or two enjoying the Gold Coast   before driving or getting the train from Robina to Brisbane. Spend a day or two in Brisbane and then drive to the Sunshine Coast for some more beach hopping – either fly out of Maroochydore airport, although it might be cheaper to return to Brisbane and fly out from there.

I took advantage of the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday and took a day of annual leave on Monday to make up an extra long weekend. As it happened, Brisbane had a public holiday on Monday – a belated Queen’s Birthday holiday. Or a belated labour day holiday. No one was sure which  public holiday had moved to October, but no one was complaining.

Annual leave magic. Four day weekend and a fortnight of four-day work weeks. Wooooohoooo!

The Gold Coast: Returning to childhood favourites

I have so many happy childhood memories from the Gold Coast, particularly from  this chilled out lagoon in Labrador. It was at this lagoon that I caught my first ever fish, a huge flathead that my Nanna and I cooked for dinner. Some say I’m a natural fisherwoman, others say that the lagoon is actually a no fishing zone and the poor fish had their guards down.

In my defence, we saw the strict “no fishing” sign the day after our fishy feast.

Fast forward fourteen years, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the water is bluer and cleaner looking than I’ve ever seen before. A flock of pelicans have also moved in, clearly having caught wind of the unsuspecting fish in the lagoon. Despite finding birds bone-chillingly creepy, I enjoyed watching them swoop in over the lagoon and bob around in the water.

Labrador is about a ten minute-drive from Surfers Paradise yet has managed to stay a sleepy beachside suburb. Before we returned to Brisbane, we walked along the Broadwater and had lunch at Marine Sushi.   All sushi train plates are just $2.99. I was too busy in my sushi frenzy to take a photo – if that’s not a seal of approval, I don’t know what is. 

The Eumundi Markets: A bright & early start

Our family bundled into the car at 6:15 sharp  6:45am, bound for the Eumundi Markets in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Not to be confused with the Gold Coast an hour south of Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast is a smattering of beach towns along the coast about 1-2 hours north of Brisbane.

Getting on the road early was essential – it saved us from being stuck in the notorious school holiday traffic.

The Eumundi Markets is the biggest art and craft market in Australia, with more than 600 stalls winding along the terraced market grounds in the township of Eumundi.

One of my favourite things about Queensland is the open-air markets. From the Davies Park Farmers Markets that I used to visit every weekend before I moved, to the quirky Kuranda Markets just outside Cairns to the sprawling Eumundi Markets, there’s nothing like doing a bit of light shopping beneath a canopy of trees.

My sister and I bought almost-matching bracelets from a jewellery designer and everyone in my family went a little nuts for fresh mandarine juice – I’m not sure how I’m ever going to go back to plain old orange.

Crushing on Noosa National Park

I haven’t been to Noosa, the largest (and most touristy) beach town on the Sunshine Coast in at least ten years. It’s drop dead gorgeous, so when I saw that the Eumundi Markets is only 15 minutes inland from Noosa Heads, I made my case. My family very kindly humoured my Noosa whim and were also pretty patient when my navigation skills made the 15-minute trip take more than 20 minutes through clogged up backroads.

We bypassed overcrowded Hastings Street and Main Beach, in favour of Noosa National Park.   None of us wore exercise gear, so we just wandered a little way along the first path we found, which led us down to the water. I could have sat and stared at Laguna Bay and the Glasshouse Mountains all day and I’d love to go back and walk the Coastal Track this summer.

When we arrived we saw a humpback whale briefly in the distance, before it disappeared. When I was editing my photos later, I found another humpback in this photo! (It’s in the top left corner). Humpback whales can be spotted up and down the Southeast Queensland coast from June to November, it’s a shame that I won’t be back in Queensland in time for another whale watching tour this year.

Brisbane: Discovering the new kids on the block

Brisbane is growing up fast. Every time I come home, I like to visit a few new bars and cafes that have popped up while I’ve been away. On Sunday, my sister and I went into Fortitude Valley to check out the recently-opened Bakery Lane and Brisbane’s first laneway precinct, Winn Lane.

Unfortunately, at 3pm on a Sunday most of the retail stores were closed and both laneways were pretty quiet. I would have loved to poke around Sunday Social in Winn Lane and a cool homewares store in Bakery Lane. We had a drink at APO in Bakery Lane and went to Winn Lane for a burger at Ben’s Burgers, a much-hyped up American-style burger shop.

Bakery Lane is super cute, and I can imagine it would be gorgeous after dark with people spilling out of the bars that open out into the tiny plaza. Unfortunately, it’s closed off at night and is more of a morning destination. This being the case, I’d love to see a cafe in Bakery Lane, as well as slightly more hangover-friendly opening hours from the retailers – it is in the Valley, after all!

On my last day in Brisbane, I had brunch with my best friend from high school at The Brass Barrell in Rosalie. I had the broccoli & corn fritters with maple bacon, poached egg and charred corn salsa, which I would 10/10 order again. I didn’t make it to my favourite Rosalie haunts on this trip, Moga and Gelateria Cremona , but it’s not long until my next visit.

South D’Aguilar National Park: A picnic with a view

Brisbane is surrounded by mountains and national parks. The rainforest walks on Mt Glorious are some of my favourites, but as far as scenic picnic spots go, Jolly’s Lookout in South D’Aguilar National Park takes the cake.

It’s only a twenty-minute drive from the middle of Brisbane up into the mountains. The picnic site was fairly busy when we went around lunch time on Sunday but we lucked out and got the best picnic table at the lookout.

Brisbane photography walk: Seeing the city with fresh eyes

On my last morning in Brisbane, Dad and I got up early and went on a photography walk in the city. We parked in West End, just behind GoMA, and made our way across the controversial Kurilpa Bridge towards the city.

I have to admit, this view of this end of the Brisbane CBD is not the most attractive one.

The further we got towards the city, the better view we had of Southbank behind us. Once in the city, we walked along George Street until we reached Reddacliff Place.

The city was sleepy at 8:00am on a public holiday. I appreciated how calm it felt – I’m not sure if the streets of Melbourne ever feel this calm. We crossed the river again, this time across the Kurilpa Bridge. The sun emerged from behind the clouds and seemed to shine on Southbank.

The pretty Southbank waterfront is such a contrast to the part of the Brisbane city directly opposite. We spent a little while photographing the old arch from a long-gone bridge, the new Brisbane sign along the water and my favourite Brisbane subject, the pink bougainvillaeas adorning the arbour, a walkway that weaves through Southbank. I’ll be posting more photos and notes on this Brisbane photography walk as well as a few others soon!

Last but not least, unsolicited photos of our new puppy!

Our beautiful dog Dash passed away this year, which was the reason for an emergency 24-hour trip home in May. It was a really sad time, so it was bittersweet to return home to meet the newest member of the family – a fluffy ball of unconditional love called Casper.

Our other dog, Heidi, has found having a puppy around takes a bit of getting used to…but secretly enjoys the company.

Since I moved to Melbourne last year , I’ve rarely been home for more than 48 hours. It’s hard to spend quality time with my friends and family in such a short time, so I was super excited to have four full days at home. I was able to spend time with my parents, brother and sister, as well as my grandparents and not one, but two friends! My parents run their own business, so they were able to rearrange their schedules to have Friday off with me. They did an amazing job of planning a variety of ways to enjoy the great outdoors up and down the Southeast Queensland coastline.

Verdict: Most successful trip home to date.

Brisbane has been named as Australia’s happiest city, but here’s what the locals think

Queensland’s capital was one of five Australian cities to make the Happy City Index in 2024

Want to start your week with a smile? A fresh ranking of the happiest cities on the planet has been released, and five Australian capital cities made the cut. We were pretty stoked to see our friends in Brisbane having their time in the spotlight, ranking as the happiest city in Australia and the 21st most cheerful in the entire world – but it seems like the locals aren’t fully on board with the hype.

Curious about how Brisbane snagged such a high spot? Every year, the Happy City Index reviews 250 locations worldwide, assessing them on thousands of quality of life factors across five categories: citizens, governance, environment, economy and mobility. Cities are then ranked by their total score and awarded gold, silver or bronze status. 

This year, 37 cities earned the prestigious title of 'Golden Happiness Cities', with Europe claiming the entire top 15. The happiest of them all was Aarhus in Denmark, followed by Zurich in Switzerland and Berlin in Germany. Minneapolis in the US was the only non-European city to crack the top 20, with Brisbane landing just outside in 21st place. 

The future Olympic host city is loved for its laid-back charm, year-round sunshine and lively music scene. However, some locals were surprised at the high ranking, with users quick to share their thoughts on a post made by the Brisbane Facebook page . One user commented, “The weather is great in Brisbane, but the city is boring, so much more to do in Melbourne or Sydney.”

Another added, “What a joke, how can someone be happy after spending 80 per cent of their wages [on] housing.”

Facebook users also called out Brisbane’s high rates of youth crime and the homelessness crisis. However, these issues aren’t exclusive to the Sunshine State, with one person defending the study, stating, “All [these] nonsense comments about housing, crime, price of living is everywhere in the world!”

So sure, Australia has a rep for being expensive , but there is still plenty to be happy about if you live here. Speaking of which, here are the best free things to do in Brisbane right now .
