4. Phra Sumen Fort

The Phra Sumen Fortification dates back to the eighteenth century (1783 to be exact).

It was built by King Rama I to help defend the city against naval invasions.

Thailand’s capital is huge, there are many attractions and things to do in Bangkok that a week wouldn’t be enough. If you have never been to Thailand before, read our super travel guide for the first time in Bangkok . A romantic trip is all about spending time together, sharing moments and experiences. Here are our favorite things to do in Bangkok for couples, all of them tested by us!

Longtail Boat Ride on Chaophraya River

A boat tour on the Chaophraya River is a must and with a little effort, you can turn the traditional tour into a super romantic experience. Book a private longtail boat tour around 4 PM, take with you a basket with wine, champagne, or beers. Don’t forget to buy the traditional Phuang Malai Song Chai, a garland made of flowers to give to your soulmate showing respect and love. Tell the captain it is a romantic afternoon and that you want to stop by the river to appreciate the sunset. Believe me, the sunset in Bangkok is stunning and seeing it from the river is marvelous.

You can book the longtail tour online, at a local tourism agency in Bangkok, at our hotel, or walk to the Saphan Taksin Pier and negotiate directly with the boat captain. T his tour combines a boat ride, a visit to Wat Pho and a Flower Market .

There are several spas that offer couples massage, and you can choose from a full-day treatment or a few hours of bath and oil massage.

The treatments can be very creative with a milk bath, golden powder massage and holistic experiences. Book in advance and spend some relaxing time together.

Many romantic hotels in Bangkok have in-house Spa, talk with the receptionist and ask about the treatments. If you fancy going to proper Thai Spa we heard great things about Divana Spa .

Traditional Cooking Class

For me food is aphrodisiac, and I love to cook with Rob. There are many cooking classes in Bangkok, you can choose from trendy recipes to traditional Royal Cuisine. I recommend the Blue Elephant Cooking School  where you can book a private class, or join the daily group activities. There you not only learn how to cook some of the most delicious Thai dishes, but you also visit a local fresh market to buy the products and the Thai ingredients.

Romantic Brunch

If your romantic trip to Bangkok is during the weekend, then you can’t miss the Sunday brunch at The Peninsula Hotel . The view from the hotel is stunning, located on the banks of Chaophraya river the hotel has one of the most scrumptious brunches in Bangkok with oysters and champagne to start the day in the most romantic mood.

Your romantic getaway to Bangkok is during the week? Don’t panic! For weekdays my recommendation is the Claire Cafe at the Oriental Residence Bangkok . A French-style bistro serving delicious breakfast, a creative drink menu and even romantic afternoon tea.   

Stroll Around Lumpini Park

Go for a holding-hands walk at Lumpini Park. Located in the heart of the city, it’s a great break from busy Bangkok. If you are early birds, head to the park before 8 AM and you will witness the lively morning at Lumpini. Join one of the Tai Chi Chuan or yoga classes, or simply walk around the beautiful lakes and romantic bridges.

Pray for the God of Love

You are in Thailand and transcendental beliefs are everywhere, so why not take part in local tradition and guarantee long-lasting love for you two? In the middle of the shopping district, just beside the Central World Mall is the Trimurti Shrine. Known as the Shrine of Love, the place is famous among single, newly married and broken-hearted.

To receive the blessing from the God Trimurti you must follow a ritual:

• have with you 9 red roses or a rose garland, 9 red incense sticks, and 2 red candles, as you will be praying for a couple. Singles need only one red candle.
• then get down on your knees in front of the shrine and say the prayer that is written below it. Offer the roses to God and place the candles and incense in the big pot.

The legend says that the best day/time for a blessing is Thursday at 9:30 AM or 9:30 PM.

Go for a lovely ride at Bang Krachao

If you are an outdoorsy couple like us, you must go for a bike ride at Bang Krachao. It’s a green island in the middle of the Chaophraya River, a few minutes away from Bangkok city center. You can reach the island by metro + boat and enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Beside the boat pier there is a bicycle rental shop, get a bike, a map, buy some drinks and get lost in the middle of the green. A picnic in the park it’s also a good idea if you want to make the experience a bit more romantic!

Bangkok nightlife for couples

The ping pong shows, the girls’ bars, and the cheap booze are some of the famous attractions of Bangkok nightlife, but don’t let this image put you away from exploring what Bangkok has to offer during the evening.

Sunset cocktails, fine dining, picturesque bars, VIP movie theaters and funfairs are some of the romantic things to do in Bangkok at nighttime. Here are our favorite romantic places in Bangkok:

Sunset at a rooftop bar

Bangkok has many rooftop bars and they are insanely high and beautiful. Watch the sunset from the top of the city is a must, but don’t get trapped by visiting only the super touristic rooftop bar. Lebua became really famous after the movie Hangover 2, the restaurant is stunning, but if you are going there only for sunset drinks it’s not the best option.

On our last romantic trip to Bangkok, we went to Octave Bar on the 45th floor of the Marriott Hotel and love it. A 360º view of Bangkok framed by golden sunsets. The crowd is a mix of expats, locals and some tourists, with great cocktails and fair prices.

Another rooftop bar that is on our list of romantic places in Bangkok is Hi-So at So-Sofitel . Overlooking Lumpini Park you have gorgeous views, nice music and extravagant drinks. The place has a fashion touch, modern and intimate.  

Fine dining, romantic restaurants in Bangkok

The list of good and romantic restaurants in Bangkok is huge, you can choose from international cuisine to Thai specialties. For an out of ordinary romantic dinner in Bangkok, I suggest booking a table at the Iron Fairies , a picturesque resto-bar with a unique design. Decorated as an ironsmith workshop, it has some dark alcoves, hidden tables, and little iron fairies decorating the walls.

For Thai flavors, the best bet is Nahm , an award-winning restaurant that mixes traditional recipes, Thai street food with sophisticated taste and presentation. For French cuisine lovers, the  Savelberg restaurant is a great option. The Michelin-awarded Chef Henk Savelberg brought to Bangkok delicious recipes, an amazing wine menu, and of course a super romantic dining atmosphere.

Funfair, food & drinks

Asiatique is another Bangkok attraction for couples. The open-air shopping mall is a mix of good restaurants, local designers’ shops and a funfair. Located by the Chaophraya river it’s perfect for couples that want to eat and shop in only one place. After a few drinks go on the Ferris Wheel to see Bangkok from a vantage point. Don’t forget the romantic kiss when the wheel stops at the top.

Nightclubs in Bangkok for couples

If you want to stretch your night out and go for some drinks and dance, my suggestion is Maggie Choos Bar , in the basement of Novotel Silom . The sensual decor will take you back in time, to Shanghai in the 1930s. Definitely a unique and a bit kinky experience, place in Bangkok for couples.

Romantic movie date in Bangkok

Looking for something more relaxed to do with your lovebird? So go on a movie date at the super luxurious Embassy Diplomat theater. It’s the ultimate VIP cinema experience, where you can have your private sofa-bed or a cocoon chair made with real leather, pillows, and blankets. What a well timed article. When we were in Bangkok our most romantic night was dining on a rooftop bar overlooking the Wat Arun. It was being remolded so the lights were off but romance was in the air. We enjoyed flaming drinks and watched the dinner cruises travel up and down the river. We capped off our night with a stroll past the Grand Palace. Bangkok is a city for lovers and your list makes it easy to know why.

Some good spots here. With rooftop bars (there are a lot to choose from) I would also go for Vertigo and Moon Bar (Banyan Tree) and on Sukhumvit I would go with Above 11 for a more affordable option 🙂 And while I’m not a huge fan of the cheaper Chao Phraya Dinner cruises the more high end are definitely up there on the romance charts.

The drivers may seem crazy at first but don’t worry, they’re always careful, and the last thing they want is to damage their own vehicle, so take it easy and enjoy the ride !

Tours generally start at Sam Yan MRT Station, so you’ll have to make your way there – I recommend booking a taxi with Grab .

It’s worth noting that these tours are among the most popular in Bangkok and sell out pretty fast, so I recommend booking as soon as possible.

One of the best ways to get to know the heart and soul of a city is by wandering through its local markets and Bangkok got plenty of markets to explore. Our favourite market of all is the colourful and vibrant Chatuchak weekend market which is one of the largest markets in the world.

In this massive 35-acre maze of little sois, paths and streets filled with over 8000 market stalls you can find absolutely everything money can buy! From clothes, shoes, books, kitchen utensils, pets, souvenirs and furniture to delicious food, antiques and even a good Thai massage – it’s a shopaholic’s dream come true and a place where you can literally “shop till you drop”. But make sure to get here early if you want to beat the crowds!

6. TAKE A BIKE RIDE AROUND BANG KRACHAO

You don’t think of Bangkok as an outdoor lover’s dream? Well you might be surprised and in for a treat if you’re an outdoorsy couple like us who love to fill their days with some more action and adventure than just walking through the city streets!

What about exploring a tranquil oasis amidst the city jungle during a fun-filled bike adventure ? Sounds good? Then head to BANG KRACHAO !

Bang Krachao – also known as the green lung of Bangkok – is a lush, green peninsula just a few minutes’ drive from the hectic city centre and can easily be reached by metro and boat with several bikes for rent right at the Bang Krachao Pier.

However, as the small pathways on this peninsula can be quite a maze and hard to navigate around we recommend to go for a guided bike tour ensuring you only have to take care of one thing – HAVING A BRILLIANT GOOD TIME.

We decided to go with the “GREEN TOUR” offered by Bangkok Bike Adventure* and had a blast. It is a half day tour taking you in small groups from their office in the city centre to the jungle pathways on Bang Krachao (boat ride included! 😊) while also stopping at a beautiful park and a local market along the way.

7. PAK KHLONG TALAD – WANDER THROUGH A FLOWER WONDERLAND

Giving flowers to express human emotions goes all the way back to the middle ages and even today gifting flowers to the woman you love is still one of the most romantic gestures. But who needs a single bouquet of flowers when you can have a whole market hall full of it?

So to all the prince charming out there: Forget the idea to order an over-priced (and usually very ordinary) bouquet at your hotel to surprise your special lady and take her for a walk around the wonderful Pak Khlong Talad Flower Market instead.

Pak Khlong Talad is a massive flower market in the heart of Bangkok open 24-hours and walking through the colourful, sweet-smelling lanes packed with all kinds of flowers you could possibly imagine is definitely a unique and very romantic experience.

The air is filled with all kinds of beautiful scents and aromas and blossoms in every colour of the rainbow. Just follow the lead of your nose to explore this magical flower wonderland and don’t forget to put together your own special bouquet of all her favourite flowers you find along the way, she surely will love you for it!

8. HAVE A SUNDOWNER ON THE CHAO PRAYA RIVER

One of the best views of Bangkok’s most famous attractions and temples is from the Chao Praya River that runs right through the heart of this buzzing city and there are tons of operators with their boats (public and private, big and small, modern and traditional) that happily take you and your partner for a ride on the river.

However, one of the most romantic ways to experience these stunning views, treat yourself to a chic sundowner or dinner cruise on the Chao Praya River , it’ll sure be an experience you won’t forget.

However, in our opinion the views are even more spectacular when night-time falls and when the city below comes to life. The mix of lights and sounds that you can admire from the distance create a very special atmosphere.

• Vertigo at Banyan tree – Offering an absolutely gorgeous view of the city (but only a bit of the river)
• Sky bar at Lebua – Bangkok’s highest bar which got even more popular after being featured in the Hangover 2 movie!

However, don’t get trapped by visiting only the well-known and super touristic rooftop bars. Prices for drinks are usually very expensive and there are many other bars offering the same if not even better views for much less. Our personal favourite is CLOUD 47 as it offers a more casual setting and atmosphere. Views are fantastic and prices are still reasonable compared to most of the other touristic rooftop bars.

Afterwards, take in a private serviced movie on a daybed for two, complete with a private butler at the luxurious Embassy Diplomat Theater . Continue relaxing by going for a drink at one of the most romantic spots in town, sunset at the Banyan Tree's rooftop Moon Bar , featuring a 360 degree panorama of all Bangkok, or else gazing out at the sunset with a glass of fine bubbly at CRU Champagne Bar  or even hidden away in the city's most intimate speakeasy The Champagne Bar in the luxurious Waldorf Astoria. The Moon Bar

No romantic visit to Bangkok can be complete without a sunset on a rooftop with a 360 degree cityscape panorama. The Moon Bar, perched on the rooftop of the Banyan Tree Hotel, offers one of the most stupendous panoramic views of Bangkok, and a sunset here is a memorable occasion, well worth the price of a cocktail. The bar sits in a stylish roof garden, seemingly sprawled out across the sky. Long divans and comfortable tables surround the bar, each with their own unique stunning view. The cocktails are as astronomical as the views, running 350 baht per drink, but are actually a pretty fair deal, as they are well mixed, strong on the alcohol, and served with complimentary dishes of cashews, wasabi peas, and chips. The drink menu is extensive, featuring mango margaritas, golden paradise concoctions with passion fruit juice and triple sec, and plenty of other exotic creations

Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because : For the city's best and most romantic view, you cannot top the Moon Bar

Lumpini Park

Created by King Rama VI in 1932, and named after the birthplace of the Buddha, Lumpini Park is an urban oasis, one of the city's largest parks located smack in the middle of central Bangkok. Besides offering plenty of shady trees under which to picnic or nap, and being a great respite from the city chaos and heat, the park's jogging and bicycle paths are a big hit with the city slickers, and couples come here for courtship rituals. You can also rent paddleboats to head out on the lake which is in the center of the park, plenty of fun for the whole family, and there are also playground areas for the kids and even rudimentary outdoor gym facilities (free weights and exercise stations) for mom and dad. Other than getting a workout in or just relaxing on a bench or the grass with a good book, there are a few other things to do in Lumpini. The park is home to large monitor lizards, who look a lot scarier than they really are, as well as plenty of birds, squirrels, and other small critters for you to observe. Lumpini is also home to the "Concert in the Park" series, where you can catch classical music performances by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra during the cool season, as well as the annual Bangkok Street Show, which features performance artists from around the world.

Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because : For a hangout popular with couples, Lumpini Park is an urban oasis.

Yunomori Onsen

Enjoying a hot spring bath and massage is certainly a great way to spend a romantic outing in Bangkok. While men and women can't bathe together, you can still meet up after your soak for massages and drinks. This Japanese bathhouse takes all the traditional love of bathing from Japanese onsen (hot spring) culture and brings it to Bangkok. At Yunomori Onsen, bamboo and finished wood surrounds several hot spring water baths where visitors can spend hours soaking and relaxing. There is a carbonated soda water pool, a jet pool, and an onsen pool with 43 degree mineral water trucked up from the famed Raksawarin hot springs in Ranong, whose water is extremely clear and without any sulfurous odor. Additionally, there is a large spa treatment area upstairs where one can have aromatherapy or traditional Thai massage treatments after relaxing in the baths.

Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because : For a hot spring experience, Yunomori Onsen is Bangkok's only choice.

Dave's expert tip : Take advantage of the package treatments combining spa and hot spring while here, they are well worth it. There is a also a beer garden, coffee shop, and Japanese restaurant on premises, so plan on spending half the day here.

CRU Champagne Bar

For a romantic night out, it doesn't get much better than this, combining dazzling cityscapes, fine drinking, and suave nightlife venues. CRU Champagne Bar is an elegant elevated bar which is now the highest drinking spot in town. The Red Sky Bar several floors below it is nice enough, but you'll need to pop into the private elevator and head up another three flights to access this skyline gem. The bar has teamed up with GH Mumm and is the only place in Bangkok you can get their #1 edition pink champagne, or if you dare, a bottle of Bollinger James Bond 007 Spectre Limited Edition. You can toast to the heavens with this fine bubbly, or else opt for the cool signature drinks such as the Perfumed Lady, mixed with Beefeater gin, passion fruit, lime, mint, and vanilla foam, or a Bangkok Bellini, concocted with mandarin Absolut vodka, mango, ginger, and champagne. The views up here are beyond sublime, with all of Bangkok spread out in front of you on all sides. You can see the Golden Mount, the Grand Palace, the Chao Phraya River, all of downtown's major skyscrapers, and the nearby Baiyoke Tower II even looks on equal footing. Come here for sunset, sprawl out on the comfy seating, and if you get hungry, there are foie gras yakitori chicken skewers, caviar, cheese platters, and plenty of other snacks to get you through the transformation from day to night in Bangkok's most lofty drinking zone.

Embassy Diplomat Screens

A romantic movie date in Bangkok doesn't get much better than this. The ultra-luxurious Embassy Diplomat theater complex has several screening rooms that offer couples the ultimate in ambience. There are full day bed sofas for two, making you feel like you are in the bedroom at home, all of which come with blankets, pillows, and personal lighting and control panels. Another cinema comes with cocoon chairs made of real leather which resembles business class seating on an airplane, fully reclinable and with leg rests, not to mention bag hangers, ice buckets, and more perks. Even better yet, you get a free personal butler with private call service button while in the theater, free high end snacks and wine/champagne in the lounge, and even mini-bars in some of the screening rooms. Who cares which movie is showing with such pampering, but don't get too comfy, you might fall asleep!

Le Normandie

For a truly romantic night out in Bangkok, treat yourself to dinner at Le Normandie. This classy French restaurant on the top floor of The Oriental Hotel is a Bangkok institution, and the second Michelin Guide to Bangkok made it one of only four restaurants to get two stars. Fois gras and roasted Sisteron rack of lamb are just some of the menu highlights prepared by the visiting French master chefs in residence here, all taken in amidst elegance with views of the Chao Phraya River to boot. While dinner here is an absolute bank breaker, the set lunch provides a way for paupers to dine like princes and indulge in Bangkok's most sophisticated restaurant.

If you aren't staying at the Oriental, the best way to get here is to take the Skytrain to the Saphan Taksin station and then hop aboard the Mandarin Oriental's free boat service along the Chao Phraya from the ferry pier.

The Champagne Bar

Featuring beautiful yacht like cruise ships, the Grand Pearl is a mainstay in the Chao Phraya cruise industry. The company runs trips up to Ayutthaya, Nonthaburi, and other day excursions, but the highlight feature of the Grand Pearl, and one that shouldn't be missed by any visitor to Bangkok, is a romantic dinner cruise up the river at night. All of Bangkok's prominent river landmarks are lit up at night, Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn), the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, the various bridges, as well as the old luxury hotels that line the river such as the Mandarin Oriental and Shangri La. In addition the sights, an international and Thai buffet dinner is served, along with Thai classical dance and a live band for guests entertainment.

Enjoy a romantic dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya River

There are plenty of places for a romantic dinner in Bangkok but why not enjoy a private dinner cruise down the Chao Phraya River, such as the Banyan tree’s Apsara.

By choosing a smaller cruise, it gives a more intimate and romantic experience , it is will however going to be a bit more expensive as it would be if you went to a 5 star restaurant but well worth it.

Otherwise if you don’t want feel like a dinner cruise you can also jump on one of the tourist boats or hire one of the small thin boats to take you along the river (keep a look out for the fish, they come to the surface and rub their bellies on the top of the water).

Devour a rooftop dinner or private dinning experience

There are certainly no shortage of rooftop bars in Bangkok, my personal favourite is Vertigo at Banyan tree, it has a great view of the city (but only a bit of the river).

If you would prefer a view of the river, Sky bar /Sirocco is probably your best bet. I don’t believe private dinning is possible in these are restaurants (unless you are very wealthy and can afford to book out the whole restaurant) however you can still enjoy a romantic evening surrounded by other couples.

If you would like private dinning, your best bet would be to contact your hotel reception and I’m sure they will be able to assist, most hotels have several private dining experiences.

Relax with a couples massage

This is a no brainer! Most hotels have fantastic spa areas that can cater to every need or want to assist with your relaxation, although the services at hotels can be quite expensive. Bangkok has many well known day spa you could try instead.

Request a couples massage or treatment, relax and be pampered together otherwise you can get the hotel concierge to book you into the one of the best couple spa in Bangkok at the “So Thai Spa”.

VIP cinema experience

Bangkok has a lot of giant air conditioned movie cinemas and yes you can watch a movie in English. I bet you are wondering how this is romantic and what’s the difference between watching a movie at home or in Bangkok?

The difference is that you can book VIP seats in the luxury cinema’s , these are much smaller than the normal cinema’s with comfortable seating, that in most cases recline and in some cinemas you can chill out in bean bags!

Hot Tip: Don’t forget to stand up during the Royal Anthem at the beginning of the movie.

#1 – The Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Why it’s awesome: The Grand Palace is definitely a top place to visit in Bangkok. Built-in the 1780s by King Rama I, it has long been the official home of the Thai monarch. Made up of a number of halls, buildings, and pavilions, the complex has beautiful courtyards, gardens, and lawns too. The revered Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) is also within the extensive grounds. It’s one of the top tourist attractions in the city for a reason.

You’ll notice that there are many different styles, largely thanks to the various monarchs that made their marks on the Grand Palace over the years. It’s still a working palace and, while several parts of the site are closed to the public, visitors can admire many of the glorious buildings, absorb a strong sense of history and culture, and get a feeling of how Thai royalty lives.

What to do there: Marvel at the majesty of the Grand Palace complex, many fine architectural details and the playful sunlight that shimmers through the roof. Large mythical giants, known as yants, guard gateways and the mythical bird-like garudas perch on many ledges. Admire the various statues throughout the well-tended grounds, the smaller but fascinating details, and take many awesome pictures .

You’ll notice that there are Buddha statues in all postures—find out which Buddha correlates to your day of birth and make merit. Watch as Buddhists give offerings and pray and see the small but impressive Emerald Buddha statue. Actually made from jade, the green statue is Thailand’s most sacred Buddha statue.

Be sure to dress conservatively when planning to visit the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha—the dress code is very strict and you’ll be refused admission if you’re dressed inappropriately. Make sure that your legs are covered to at least the knees (men should wear long trousers) and your arms to at least the elbows. Closed shoes are also a must when you visit the Grand Palace.

Why it’s awesome: One of the biggest markets in the world (and therefore one of the coolest places to visit in Bangkok), the Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok (also known as JJ Market) has around 15,000 stalls spread between almost 30 sections. Huge, but fairly easy to navigate, there are sections dedicated to art and crafts, clothes and accessories, ceramics, plants and gardening, books, antiques and World War II memorabilia, home décor, and more. It’s often said that if you can’t find what you’re looking for at Chatuchak Market then it’s not worth having!

Around 200,000 people visit the enormous market every weekend making it one of the most popular places in Bangkok. Open since the early 1940s, the market has grown into the mammoth that it is today, with places to rest, eat, and drink if you need to take a break from all the retail therapy.

What to do there: Wear comfortable shoes and shop, shop, and shop! Whether you’re looking for exquisite Thai silks, cheap t-shirts, handmade soaps, typical souvenirs, carved wood, amulets and religious memorabilia, kitchenware, or something else, you’re sure to find it at Chatuchak Market.

Although prices are generally reasonable, the weekend market is the perfect place in Bangkok to improve your haggling skills for even greater pocket-friendly prices. Don’t miss seeing the clock tower, built-in 2007 to commemorate the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 60 th birthday.

Many of the statues were brought here from the ancient capital of Ayutthaya when the city fell to the Burmese, and there are also statues from the former capital of Sukhothai and other places around Thailand. Wat Pho is one of the oldest temples in Bangkok, older in fact than the capital and a major tourist attraction you just can’t miss.

The original temple is thought to date back to the late 1600s or early 1700s, although the temple underwent large renovations and restorations in the 1780s. There’s a Thai medicine school within the grounds and the temple is where traditional Thai massage originated. It’s the perfect place to experience Thai culture.

Brought to Thailand from China, some of the interesting statues have European features. Khmer-style statues stand at the pagodas at the corners of each courtyard; their job is to guard north, south, east, and west. You’ll see chedis and pagodas in all shapes, sizes, and colours; there are four large chedis plus almost 100 smaller chedis.

Why it’s awesome: Wat Arun (also sometimes known as Wat Chaeng) is a stunning temple on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River and a great place to visit in Bangkok for history fans. Nicknamed the Temple of the Dawn, Wat Arun is rather unique in its designs and not like other temples around the Thai capital. A temple has stood at the same site since the Ayutthaya period – which is a pretty long time!

The main prang of Wat Arun is in a Khmer style and bedecked with broken pieces of porcelain and shells for a whimsical and colourful appearance. Statues of animals and Chinese figures stand around the base. Chinese-style pavilions sit next to the river and there’s a large Buddha statue within the giant-guarded Ordination Hall.

What to do there: Admire the glorious temple from across the Chao Phraya River before taking the ferry to get up close. Climb up the central prang (built by King Rama II), admiring the views as you pass up the three symbolic levels. Feel small as you stand in front of the fearsome statues at the entrance to the Ordination Hall and see the main Buddha housed from within. Relax in one of the salas (pavilions) and soak up the river views. Try and visit Wat Arun at night time too when it is illuminated against the inky sky, the reflections shimmering on the water in a beautifully captivating way.

#5 – Wat Yannawa – Quite the quirky place in Bangkok!

Why it’s awesome: Wat Yannawa is an ancient temple that can trace its roots back to the Ayutthaya period and before the founding of Bangkok as the Thai capital. Located close to the Chao Phraya River, the temple was built on the orders of King Rama III. It was designed to resemble a traditional Chinese junk (sailing vessel), helping to preserve maritime heritage.

This “temple” is definitely not what you’d expect, so it’s a really interesting place in Bangkok. There are several other impressive buildings throughout the complex, including an ancient wooden structure and an air-conditioned room with a dazzling array of Buddha images and other religious ornaments and memorabilia.

What to do there: Pass through the large entrance gate and stroll along the wide pavement up to the boat-shaped structure. Buy a floral offering before stooping to pass through the low passageways and climb the steps inside the boat to reach the upper small shrine. Light incense and pay your respects at the shrine and make merit by placing flowers in the Buddha footprint.

#6 – Lumpini Park – One of the most beautiful outdoor places in Bangkok

Why it’s awesome: Lumpini Park covers 142 acres (57.6 hectares) and it’s located in the city centre close to several BTS and MRT stations. Named after the birthplace of the Lord Buddha, the large green park has various activities and attractions for visitors to enjoy. What to do there: Follow the walking trails around the park and look out for gigantic monitor lizards swimming through the lakes, skulking across the grass, and lazing in the tree branches. Birds twitter in the trees too, and the park is home to some 30 types of birds. #7 – Wat Saket – A great place to see in Bangkok if you love architecture

Why it’s awesome: Wat Sakat, also known as the Golden Mount, is one of Bangkok’s many beautiful temples. Sitting on an artificial hill, it is located at the highest ground point in Bangkok. The temple dates back to the Ayutthaya era and it contains a sacred Buddhist relic brought to Thailand from Sri Lanka. The present temple building was built from marble in the 20 th century. Each November the temple is the scene of a spectacular candlelit procession where devotees wind their way up the hill with their candles twinkling in the darkness.

What to do there: Admire the golden chedi from the base of the small hill before following the shaded pathway up to the top. There are many interesting statues alongside the path, with trees and plants adding to the attractiveness. As you’re near the top you’ll come to a wall of bells—ring these bells for good luck.

You can climb even higher for more terrific vistas and see various statues and murals. When you descend the mountain pay a visit to the ancient cemetery at the bottom, the final resting place for many victims of the plague.

#8 – Erawan Museum – An awesome place in Bangkok for half a day!

Why it’s awesome: The Erawan Museum, located in nearby Samut Prakan, is one of Thailand’s masterpieces by Mr Lek Viriyaphant. Built to be visually appealing, showcase art, and encourage people to question spirituality and their beliefs of the world and creation, it is definitely one of Bangkok’s most whimsical and amazing attractions. The centrepiece is a circular pink three-storey building that is topped with a huge three-headed elephant. Based on Hindu ideas of cosmology, the three levels represent the underworld, earth, and heaven.

What to do there: Feast your eyes on the fascinating building with its three-headed bronze elephant and stand at the base of the wooden staircase, admiring the encrusted stucco balustrade. Wander around the ground level where you’ll find carved wooden pillars that depict various scenes from several major world religions. The overall level of craftsmanship is incredible.

Climb the steps, and be blown away by the huge colourful skylight. Peek out of a small window for views across the site and continue skywards to reach the level that represents heaven. You can also see a large Buddha footprint and a grand historic wooden chair. In the lower level, there are many more statues and art pieces, along with diverse collections of rocks from around the nation.

Displays are well ordered and there are good explanations and descriptions in English. One of the biggest museums in the region, it dates back to the 1870s having been established by King Rama V to display gifts and memorabilia from his late father.

What to do there: Plan to spend a few hours discovering the various displays across the museum’s three main areas. Learn more about Thailand’s past in Siwamokhaphiman Hall, with items that go from the Sukhothai era right up to the Rattanakosin period, and see beautiful murals and a large Buddha statue in Buddhaisawan Chapel. Visit the chariot hall to see carriages that used to be used in royal ceremonies, see masks used in traditional Thai puppetry, admire ornate ceramics, view old clothes, and more.

Why it’s awesome: Established in the 1780s, Bangkok’s Chinatown is one of the biggest Chinatowns across the globe. #16 – Patpong – A wild place to see in Bangkok!

Why it’s awesome: It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Patpong is one of the best places to experience Bangkok’s famous adult side. One of the city’s major red-light districts, it is also a fun place for a night out. The house was built in the 1950s in a traditional Thai style using old teak buildings from various parts of the country. The old wooden buildings were reassembled and repurposed in their present Bangkok site. Surrounded by lush garden and alongside a canal, the charming buildings contain Thompson’s extensive art collection and Buddhist statues.

What to do there: Step into a green oasis in the heart of Bangkok, feeling as though you’ve been transported to a small jungle far from the city crowds. Wander through the verdant gardens and enjoy the calm and tranquil atmosphere. Watch as people demonstrate traditional silk weaving techniques and learn more about the silk production process, and see people performing graceful Thai dancing. Why it’s awesome: The Giant Swing is a towering red frame in front of the sparkling Wat Suthat and one of the lesser-visited places in Bangkok. The swing was once used in ancient Brahmin religious ceremonies and there are old pictures showing the swing in action. Built-in the 1780s, the swing was moved to its current location in 1920. It was used for religious rituals until the 1930s. Made from teak wood, the frame stands at more than 30 metres (98 feet) high. Wat Suthat is an impressive temple, though it sees fewer visitors than Bangkok’s major temples so still retains a peaceful and spiritual air. It has beautiful wooden carvings, striking murals, and large Buddha statues.

What to do there: Gaze up at the Giant Swing and let your imagination take you back to the times when it played a vital role in religious ceremonies. See black and white photographs showing the swing in use. Explore the handsome Wat Suthat, which is among Bangkok’s oldest temples, and admire the glorious murals that show scenes from the Ramakien. See the large golden seated Buddha statue in the main hall and more than 150 statues of the Lord Buddha around the walls of the cloister. What to do there: Catch a boat to Koh Kret island and explore by foot or rented bicycle. Follow the circular track around the island, pausing to visit several places of interest along the route. See stunning ceramics in the Kwan Aman Pottery Museum and watch all stages of the pottery-making process in one of the small workshops around the island. Purchase locally made terracotta items in the market or at one of the many shops.
