Those high-tech belt accessories at the Hero? Here’s what they’re for

They look like clunky beepers from a bygone era, but, in fact, those devices attached to the back of players’ belts at the Hero World Challenge this week are packed with new-age technology.  

Rickie Fowler was wearing one Friday. Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth , too.

In a few words, they’re GPS trackers. In a few more words, they’re what the PGA Tour hopes will be a key tool in its efforts to expand and improve its ShotLink system, a sprawling network that collects and disseminates players’ scoring and statistical data in real-time.

At most Tour events, ShotLink is powered by a small army of volunteers who gather data from sensors — a combination of radar, cameras and/or lasers — that capture the path and movement of every shot. Distance, flight apex, proximity to the hole: you name it, ShotLink tracks it, beaming the intel almost instantaneously to golf fans, bettors and stats nerds all over the world.

Trouble is, the technology is cumbersome and expensive, meaning it’s not available at all events. Overseas tournaments, for example, aren’t wired for ShotLink. Nor are all the courses at events with multiple host sites (i.e., the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am). The more portable tracking devices — with which ShotLink administrators already have been experimenting on the Korn Ferry and Champions tours — could solve for these challenges. And wouldn’t it be wonderful to also see the tech in use on the LPGA Tour?    

“The few pros I asked about it on Wednesday seemed intrigued by the idea and not overly bothered by the clip-on device,” my colleague, Dylan Dethier, reported earlier this week . “But the Tour will undergo more testing before putting the tech into play for tournament rounds.”

The PGA Tour did not immediately respond to a query about the goal of this week’s experiment. But the devices — or “bugs,” as the ShotLink staff calls them — did make a cameo on the Golf Channel broadcast Friday, with roving reporter John Wood noting: “They’ve been in R&D for a couple of years. They take a reading of the players’ location every three seconds, plot it on a graph and then when they get to their ball — once they hit — the walking scorer will hit a button and that gives them their yardage.”

Among endless other data points.

Nifty stuff.

How much prize money will the winner, top finishers of the Memorial Tournament get?

The winner of this year's Memorial Tournament will take home a larger prize than ever before. 

Just how much money does the winner of the Memorial Tournament get to take home?

Last year, Viktor Hovland earned not only a trophy and a new title but brought home $3,600,000. That is a nearly $1.5 million increase from 2022 winner Billy Horschel’s earnings.

According to PGA TOUR , this year’s purse amount matches last year’s at $20 million total. Only, the winner of the 2024 tournament will take home 20% of the purse this year, which equals $4 million.

This year's Memorial at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin takes place from June 6 through June 9.

The Memorial has a 36-hole cut to the top 50 players and ties, in addition to any players within 10 strokes of the 36-hole lead, according to PGA TOUR.

The final field for the tournament was announced by officials on Monday. 

Seventy-three players will compete for the top spot. Six of those players are past winners of the tournament, one being reigning Masters champion and current World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Here's the final field.

How to Watch the Golf Channel Without Cable

Peacock is the official streamer for NBC Sports and since the Golf Channel is a division within the sports group, Peacock will be livestreaming the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, USGA events as well as Golf Channel Academy. You’ll need a Peacock membership in order to watch the Golf Channel without cable. Already a Peacock member? Just log into your account and you’ll be able to instantly watch many of the Golf Channel programs on Peacock.

If you’re not subscribed, Peacock doesn’t offer a free trial but the platform provides two affordable plan options starting at just $5.99 a month .

There are two plans you can pick from: Peacock Premium and Peacock Premium Plus . A Premium membership is the cheapest option and ad-supported at $5.99 a month or you can get 12 months for the price of 10 with an annual subscription of $59.99 a year. The plan includes live sports and events coverage (including some from the Golf Channel) as well as access to the entire streaming library of new and original shows as well as content from Bravo and NBC. In addition, you’ll also be able to watch more than 50 always-on live channels.

Besides the Golf Channel, you’ll also be able to watch other live sports such as Sunday Night Football, the 2024 Olympics, WWE matches, Premiere League and IndyCar as well as everything in the Peacock library like Apples Never Fall, New Girl, Community, Parks & Rec, The Office , Bel-Air , Vanderpump Rules and Poker Face .

How to Watch the Golf Channel Without Cable for Free

Besides Peacock, there are a few live TV streamers that are offering free trials that’ll let you stream Golf Channel online.

DirecTV Stream

New users can score a five-day free trial when you sign up for one of the four packages from DirecTV Stream . Plus, right now you can get one month of its Sports Pack for free when you bundle one of the packages. Only three plans include the Golf Channel: the Choice package , Ultimate package and Premier package . Plans start at $99 (reg. $124) for more than 125 channels including local channels, unlimited DVR storage and the ability to stream on up to three devices simultaneously.

FuboTV is offering a seven-day free trial for new users who sign up. There are four packages to choose from that start as low as $80 and each package includes the Golf Channel. You’ll receive more than 185 channels, the ability to livestream channels, 1,000 hours of DVR and the option to stream on up to 10 devices simultaneously. Upgrade to the Elite or Premier packages for 4K quality as well as Paramount+ with Showtime included for no added cost (only included in the Premier package).

Hulu + Live TV

Looking for even more content options? Hulu + Live TV can be bundled with Disney+ and ESPN+ that’ll let you watch exclusive sports coverage offered on ESPN and more.

Is the Golf Channel on Peacock for Free?

Peacock provides live sports coverage through NBC Sports and the Golf Channel when you sign up for one of its two subscription plans. You don’t have to pay anything additional to your plan in order to watch live sports, you’ll have automatic access to the PGA Tour and more golf events after logging in.

Is Golf Channel on Hulu?

A Hulu subscription won’t give you access to the Golf Channel — you’ll need to upgrade to Hulu + Live TV in order to get access to live TV channels (including the Golf Channel). In addition to live channels, a Hulu + Live TV subscription will also let you watch everything within the Hulu library including the streamer’s original and new content as well as FX and ABC shows the day after they air.
