April 30, 2023

Paula Martinelli

If you are planning your dream trip to Brazil and considering visiting Petropolis, then you have come to the right place! I have compiled the most comprehensive travel guide to visiting Petropolis, Brazil, including all the top things to do in this charming town nestled amongst magical mountains and forests.

Petropolis is a fascinating destination that you will absolutely adore, with its exuberant nature and various adventure options. Additionally, it makes for a great weekend trip from Rio de Janeiro . As someone who has explored this beautiful town a couple of times, I highly recommend including Petropolis in your itinerary.

Whether you’re looking to learn more about Petropolis or need help planning your trip to Brazil , this guide is your one-stop-shop. I’ve summarized everything you need to know , including the top attractions and activities to experience in Petropolis, best places to stay, how to get here and much more. So, sit back, relax, and let me be your guide to this incredible destination.

How to get around Petropolis?

Essential Tips to Visit Petropolis, Brazil

Why petropolis should be your next brazil destination.

Although Petropolis has a reputation as a romantic destination, there is also a lot of adventure tourism there for those who enjoy exploring trails and waterfalls. And the rich cultural side cannot be left out, after all, the city is a landmark in the history of Brazil.

The highlights include historical architecture, fascinating museums, and the amazing long trails for incredible hiking in the forest and mountains that surround the town.

Where is Petropolis located?

If you are planning to visit the wonderful city of Rio de Janeiro , make sure to include Petropolis in your Brazil itinerary plans and you can thank me later. Petropolis is a colonial town located within the state of Rio de Janeiro, just 44 miles (70km) from the city of Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis has attractions for all tastes.

From Rio to Petropolis: Planning Your Perfect Day Trip

Private Petropolis Day Tour from Rio de Janeiro

This is my top pick tour from Rio de Janeiro, as you get to go on a private tour to visit the city on your own pace and get to choose your preferences, and skip what you don’t want to visit. You will be on your private vehicle and guide, on a journey of approx. 9 hours, and at it is the most budget friendly tour!

Historic Petrópolis From Rio: The Imperial City –Palaces, Architecture & Culture

This is another great option for a private tour from Rio de Janeiro, where you will be able to dig deeper into Brazil’s history and cultural roots. Your guide will provide immersive and interactive commentary at each location for a more personalized experience, with your own private car . Total tour time around 10-hours.

Petrópolis the Imperial city

With this 8-hours private tour from Rio de Janeiro, you will get to see the highlights of Petropolis, plus you will travel through the Orgãos mountains and their green, rainforest landscapes with your private guide. Lunch is included and flexibility on the itinerary, what makes this tour a great opportunity to see and experience the best of Petropolis and its surroundings.

How many days do I need to visit Petropolis?

I recommend to visit Petropolis in 2 days and 3 nights, to allow the time you need to not miss any of the main attractions in Petropolis. If you are staying outside the center of Petrópolis, add as many days as you can in your schedule (and in your pocket) to enjoy the hotel and take tours around the mountains.

When is the best time to visit Petropolis?

Petrópolis can be visited all year round, but it is very popular destination during the cold weather of June, July, and August, which are also the driest months. In winter, the minimum temperatures can reach below 10ºC and 20ºC mid-day.

The summer is usually hot (around 25ºC, with lows above 15ºC) and very rainy. If you want to travel during this period, don’t go without first checking the weather forecast and the condition of the roads.

Petropolis’ Festivals: A Celebration of Brazilian Culture”

Bauernfest, the German colonist’s festival, is the biggest event on the Petrópolis calendar. It usually takes place between the end of June and the beginning of July. With typical dances, German food, a lot of beer (and a lot of people) around the Palácio de Cristal.

I visited Petropolis in the first week of July and the city was packed for the festival, making it hard even to find a restaurant to eat or a table at the bar to get a German beer. But if you like festivals and to meet cool people, this is the best time to visit Petropolis.

The best way to get around Petropolis is by car. If you are staying in the city center and your route is restricted to this location, the car is not necessary. On the other hand, if you intend to explore the city’s most hidden routes, I recommend renting a car to explore Petropolis.

In addition to these attractions, the City Center of Petropolis boasts Rua Teresa, the primary fashion hub of the city. It’s also home to some of the best breweries in the area, including Cervejaria Bohemia and Buda Beer.

One of the attractions of the city is gastronomy, which has an excellent variety and quality. With German colonization, you can find great options for this cuisine, starting at Casa do Alemão (German’s House)is a mandatory stop on the way up the mountain.

Fondue, cheese, and wine are also popular in winter. Below I will provide a list of the best restaurants in Petropolis that I recommend to visit.

3. Visit the Imperial Museum of Brazil

The Imperial Museum is an imposing palace that features a neoclassical style.  It is located in the Historic Center of Petrópolis, and is today one of the biggest tourist attractions in Petrópolis.

During your visit, you will have access to thousands of historical items (furniture, clothes, documents, paintings, sculptures and pictures).  The exhibitions are organized in well-preserved rooms, referring to that period of the Second Reign.

You can also visit the stunning gardens and have a coffee and a Brazilian pastry at the cafe located at the gardens of the palace!

If you’re someone who loves the great outdoors and adventure, then Serra dos Orgaos is the perfect destination for you. This stunning location boasts an extensive network of hiking trails that spans 200 kilometers and features numerous waterfalls and mountain peaks to explore at your leisure.

One notable highlight of Serra dos Orgaos is the Dedo de Deus , a rock formation resembling a finger that serves as a prominent landmark in the area. Additionally, visitors can climb the Serra do Mar which towers 2,275 meters above sea level and features the awe-inspiring Pedra do Sino, or Bell Rock.

Terezopolis Brazil

6. Wax Museum

Wax Museum has the same supplier as Madame Tussauds. The Museum uses hyper-realism in its sculptures, and it is well worth dedicating a few hours to visit.

You will find sculptures of many Brazilian personalities. The museum opens from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. On Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm.

PRO-TIP: At the end of the tour you can make the sculpture of your own hand in the museum shop and keep it as a souvenir.

7. Koeler Avenue to see the Palaces

Begin your walk at the Casa da Princesa Isabel, the first house on the street, before continuing to the Sérgio Fadel Palace , currently used as the City Hall, and the stunning Solar Dom Afonso , a 19th-century neoclassical building that has been converted into a charming hotel with an exquisite garden.

As you continue along the avenue, you’ll arrive at the Rio Negro Palace , built-in 1889 by the Baron of Rio Negro, a coffee producer. Now a museum dedicated to the memory of the Republic of Brazil, it showcases photographs, objects, and records of the republican presence in the Imperial City.

HOW TO VISIT IT: Best of all, admission is free, and the museum is open to visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm.

8. Cathedral of Petropolis

Step into a slice of Europe in Brazil at the São Pedro de Alcântara Cathedral ! This stunning cathedral features French neo-Gothic architecture and lavish details both inside and out that will leave you breathless. Don’t miss the impeccably preserved stained glass windows and Carlos Oswald’s masterful paintings.

Take your time exploring every nook and cranny of the Cathedral, including the altar with relics from St. Magnus, St. Aurelia, and St. Tecla brought directly from Rome. Plus, pay your respects to the imperial family as their remains are interred here, including Dom Pedro II, Dona Teresa Cristina, Princesa Isabel, and Conde D’Eu.

HOW TO VISIT IT: Admission is free, and the Cathedral is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm. Make sure to stop by at Rua São Pedro de Alcântara, 60 – Centro.

9. Cervejaria Bohemia (Brewery Bohemia)

In addition to a lot of history, Petrópolis is also known for being the city where the first brewery in Brazil is located, Cervejaria Bohemia. Founded by the German Henrique Kremer in 1853, Cervejaria Bohemia had the first Pilsen beer to be produced in Brazil. To tell this whole story, Bohemia decided to create a tour inside its factory: the Tour Cervejeiro.

The brewery also has a rooftop restaurant and a small bar with a delicious menu to accompany the various beers brewed there.

Petropolis Brazil

10. Visit the Vale do Amor (Garden of Love)

Escape to the Vale do Amor, an open-air sanctuary designed to unite the symbologies of different religions. Created by Sérgio Fechar, coordinator of the Universal Cosmic Fraternity, the sanctuary is a perfect spot for meditation and spiritual connection.

It doesn’t matter what you believe in, the Vale do Amor welcomes everyone who seeks a deep encounter with themselves. The Franciscan altar (also known as the Sanctuary of Francisco and Clara) and the Yin-Yang Gardens are two of the most popular attractions.

This oasis isn’t just a beautiful spot for natural visitors, it’s a place to engage in religious dialogue, spiritual medicine, and environmental awareness. So, come and create memories in this serene setting!

Petropolis Brazil

11. Go Shopping in Petropolis

There are three excellent fashion centers in the Petropolis, so it’s worth taking a few hours out of your day to get to know one of them and do some shopping.

Rua Teresa is in the Center and is the best known of them . Prices are very attractive, especially if you are using dollar or euro. In addition to Rua Teresa, there is also the Bingen fashion center, located very close to the bus station . The Itaipava Market is another option for shopping.

12. Casa Santos Dumont

Step into history at “A Encantada” – the last home of Santos Dumont. Despite the unsuitability of the land, Dumont designed this unique house, which now serves as a museum to celebrate his legacy. Don’t miss out on the chance to see where the father of Brazilian aviation lived and worked.

FUN FACT: Santos Dumont was a prominent inventor, aviator, and one of the pioneers of aviation in the world.

13. Casa de Chocolates Katz

The Katz House was born out of a relationship between Anne Katz and Ruth Bucki, German and Austrian, respectively. Founded in 1953, the artisan delicacies stand out, with quality raw material.  To this day, it is a highlight among visitors as a good option for what to do in Petrópolis, Brazil.

14. Palácio de Cristal (Crystal Palace)

Discover the “Crystal Palace” – a stunning glass and iron structure gifted by Conde D’Eu to Princess Isabel. Originally built in 1844 to exhibit flowers and birds, the palace was inspired by similar models in Porto and London, but both were dismantled.

FUN-FACT: Today, the palace is a popular cultural venue in Petrópolis and hosts events like the traditional German festival, Bauernfest .

Stephan Zweig’s House is a unique museum that pays tribute to the life and legacy of the Austrian Jewish writer who fled Nazi Germany during World War II. Here, visitors can explore the former home of Zweig and his wife, Lotte, and learn about their literary contributions.

The house serves as an exile memorial and honors the countless other artists, scientists, and cultural producers who arrived in Brazil seeking refuge. It was also where Zweig produced some of his most influential works before tragically taking his own life in the face of a darkening Europe in 1942.

FUN-FACT: Today this place honors hundreds of other artists, scientists and cultural producers in Brazil who, like Zweig, arrived as exiles or emigrants.

  • IMPERATRIZ LEOPOLDINA : This is the best place to get breakfast in town, and is famous for its colonial cafe in a refined atmosphere. Located in the city center inside the Hotel Solar do Imperio , this place really makes you feel like in the royal time. The city became a popular destination for nobles who built their own palaces, many of which are now preserved as historical heritage sites that you can visit today.

The Ultimate Guide to Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro

Serra dos Órgãos National Park

Petrópolis is the mountain escape for Rio de Janeiro ‘s residents when the summer’s unforgiving heat arrives. The peaks – carpeted with forests and the mountainous ridge of Serra dos Órgãos National Park – provide a much cooler climate, and the city’s culture and tourism offer much to explore, centred around its colonial heritage and history. Read our in-depth guide to Petrópolis and learn where to go when it’s too scorching to stay in the city.

Attractions.

Known as the Cidade Imperial (the imperial city), Petrópolis is rich in theatres, museums, and palaces from the colonial era. Palacio de Cristal ( Crystal Palace ) is a large building made entirely from glass as a gift to Princess Isabel from her husband, Conde d’Eu. The construction was built and designed in France before arriving in Brazil in parts to be reconstructed in Petrópolis. It was in this building that the end of slavery in Brazil was celebrated in 1888, by the leaders that authorised its abolition.

Crystal Palace

The Museu Imperial ( Imperial Museum ) was built by emperor Dom Pedro II as a summer retreat for himself and his family to take refuge from the tropical sun. The striking interior is a clear reminder of its noble heritage and guests are provided with slippers at the entrance to protect the original wooden floors. On display at the museum is a gold pen encrusted with rubies that was used to sign the Lei Aurea which stopped slavery in Brazil.

Imperial Museum

The Catedral de São Pedro de Alcântara ( cathedral of São Pedro of Alcântara ) is an impressive construction with large, arched windows and towers in typical French and German gothic style. The Teatro D. Pedro ( D. Pedro Theater ) was built in 1933 in a giddy mix of architectural styles, most notably art deco. It is one of the biggest theatres in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The Casa de Santos Dumont ( Santos Dumont house ) is a standing legacy to the Brazilian pioneer who had a significant impact on air travel development. His house has turned into a public museum, with past belongings still on display around the property. Palacio Quitandinha ( Quitandinha Palace ) is a strikingly large hotel-mansion that is decorated with a classic Hollywood theme and has had its share of famous guests such as Carmen Miranda and Walt Disney.

Enjoy the surrounding nature at the Serra dos Órgãos National Park which offers several hikes including a three-day hike to the nearby city of Teresopolis. The Vale das Videiras (Videiras Valley) provides great views of the rolling green hills.

Serra dos Órgãos National Park

One of the most popular attractions is the Cervejaria Bohemia , ( Bohemia beer factory ) a local brewery that produces the Brazilian beer brand, Bohemia. A tour of the factory includes touch-screen pads, 3D videos, and interactive displays, and finishes at the bar and shop where visitors can purchase various types of beer, taste samples and drink Bohemia beer on draft.

Held to honor the legacy of German immigration to the area, Bauernfest is the largest festival in Petrópolis and one of the largest German festivals in Brazil – it is second only to Oktoberfest in Blumenau, in the south. It celebrates with typical German cuisine, draft beers and German music and dancing.

Petrópolis also hosts smaller festivals that celebrate local immigration, such as the Serra Serata in honor of Italian culture and Bunka-Sai, a tribute to Japanese culture.

Eating and Drinking

For bars and partying, the nearby region of Itaipava is the most lively. What Petrópolis lacks in nightlife, it makes up for with a solid selection of good restaurants. Petit Palais Casa de Cha is a cozy tearoom that serves a wonderful breakfast and brunch menu; however, the classic afternoon tea that comes with hot drinks, cakes, croissants and different pâtés best captures the regal surroundings. Majorica Churrascaria serves some of the finest cuts of meat in town at this typical Brazilian barbecue house. Its generous serving sizes come with enough food for at least two people. Lastly, Las Delicias is a budget friendly, buffet-style restaurant offering pasta, salad, beans, rice, fish and meat.

1. Where to Stay

Hostel, Hotel

Budget travellers should head to Albergue da Juventude Quitandinha , a simple, cheap hostel with wooden exterior and exposed brickwork inside. There are several 4-bed dorms and a no-frills – yet substantial – buffet-style breakfast. Fore a more upscale experience, the large glass exterior of Hotel Petrópolis Inn echoes the Crystal Palace in form and offers great views over the city and surrounding countryside. The modern hotel includes a large, breezy reception and small yet clean and light-filled rooms. Pousada 14 Bis is well-located near the city centre and bus station; its understated rooms provide a clean and quiet place to stay, and the friendly staff creates a welcoming atmosphere.

As a customer in the gas station today, I witnessed a cashier make a condescending and embarrassing comment to another cashier. A young lady cashier tripped over something in the walkway behind the counter. She was clearly embarrassed but remained professional. An older female cashier found it acceptable to laugh at her and snap "didn't they teach you how to walk in kindergarten?!" How humiliating for the younger girl. She looked like a teenager. She didn't respond to the other cashier's nasty comment and continued with her task. I took a look at older cashier's name tag and I am pretty sure it was Lisa. I guess she was never taught if you have nothing nice to say, to say nothing. The cashier that tripped was Mari? Or something along that line. She has curly hair. Is this the behavior this company supports? Condescending, humiliating, harassment and bullying of younger worker by older workers. I hope management sees this and takes this seriously. It was unacceptable and very unprofessional behavior. That lady needs corrective action. Who knows what she says when no one can hear! She clearly felt comfortable bullying a young girl in front of customers. Do better in your hiring Petro, because this made me never want to return.

If you are driving into Spokane and your car is getting close to needing a fill up, this stop is an easy one and the gas prices are definitely reasonable! If you are leaving Spokane and realized that your gas tank is a little low, this is also an easy stop. You can also grab a coffee in the same lot for your road trip. I know that it's hard to believe but I actually only filled the gas tank! At night, this is very well lit.

Photo of John B.

Easy on and off before getting to Spokane from the west or after you have just left Spokane going west. And you can also grab a Starbucks coffee to go, right in the parking lot. The gas is competitively priced. The convenience store is relatively similar to most freeway stops. If you are heading to the Northern Quest casino, this is your exit.

I used to ride with my dad sometimes when he drove truck, and some mega truck stops that are almost like a mall for truckers. Everything the road weary frieght hauler could need, including a shower, could be gotten at one of these places. While I don't ride in my dad's semi any more, I still have good memories of these kinds of places. We'd load up on some fruit and milk, a loaf of bread, sandwich meat and Miracle whip for the road. After we put that stuff in the cooler, we'd go into the cafe there and get some big dinner to last us the miles (or breakfast depending on the time of day). My dad would always flirt shamelessly with whatever waitress came to handle our orders, even if she needed a shave worse than him. He once told me every girl deserves to be flirted with at least once in their life. Yeah, I know, but he meant well. Anyway, to the present. Imagine if 7 Eleven tried to be like a Wal Mart Supercenter. That is the scale that their convenience store is on. There is also a Subway, which does a good job and is very efficient. If you want a "sit down" style meal there is Iron Skillet. I haven't eaten at the Iron Skillet but the good smells and smiles that come from that way tell me they must be doing a good job. The convenience store actually has pretty reasonable prices. Someone must have figured that truckers really don't have tons of money to spend like some people think, so they don't try to make them drop it all at this stop. Their selection is just awesome. I have seen energy drinks there I have never even heard of or seen anywhere else. I even once saw, no joke, and actual can of Whoop Ass. Was tempted to buy it but since everyone warns me not to make them open one, I decided it probably tasted like it's name. Gas prices are also reasonable. One of my favorite things: a lot of the staff calls everybody "hun". Call me a redneck if you like, but that is just comforting, and I can't even explain why. One final note. The restrooms are always very clean, which impresses me mightlly. I grew up around some of the nastiest slobs running loads this country has every known. When they got done in a restroom it could be an EPA Superfund sight. I have never seen the restrooms looking worse than slightly recently used here. The average person may be just heading into or out of Spokane and may not want to stop so soon into or to the end of the trip. I say, "Hey, life is too precious to rush everywhere. Stop and get you a donut and some trucker coffee and revitalize a little." Give it a try.

Our first visit to Spokane and we were thrilled to find a Petro! Shower time! The water pressure was good and the temp was hot! Feeling so much better! Got our laundry done and had our first sit-down meal in a week, with fruits and vegetables, eaten with a knife and fork. Happy campers! Easy truck parking, we were able to get a good spot, close to the building. Food was good. Shower was good. Two thumbs up all around!

High gas prices and rude employees. The deli food is disgusting. Not sure why everyone that works here is so put off and hates their job.

We came in for a oil change before 11am , told can't get to us until two pm .. went in side no restraint , so we wanted out of deli , told can't help you without a mask ! They are behind the counter 5 ft away ! Told to use a mask on the table were everyone touches ? Yuck ! No thanks I'll cook in the truck ! Better food anyway .

NEVER stop here if your in a hurry! I have waited in line for 10-12 minutes more than once. The plus side? They are open 24 / 7. The downside? The are always busy! They do have a hot deli that does a decent job, a huge variety of sodas, teas, etc. Their beer selection is very small, but it's a truck stop. They also have a diner / buffet restaurant attached to them that does a pretty good job overall, and also a Subway sandwich shop inside. They sell fudge by the pound, and anything else you can expect from a truck stop. The restrooms always seem to be dirty. Staff are pretty friendly, they deal with the business and lines well.

We stopped here on our way into Spokane specifically because they had a Starbucks attached. I believe there's only a few other Petro's that have one attached in the country (2, I believe). We definitely appreciated that as it can be hard to find a Starbucks (or really any other coffee shop) with truck parking nearby. The prices inside were obviously pretty high, both in the store and the Starbucks. But, that's to be expected with truck stops. There was ample truck parking, and there were still plenty of spaces late into the night. The area also seems pretty nice, and there weren't any characters roaming around which is always a positive. If we ever find ourselves up in the Spokane area again, we will definitely consider stopping back in here.
