A Caribbean cruise run by Tui has been brought to an abrupt halt – with passengers told to leave the ship and fly home early after what the firm says is “a technical issue with our catering facilities”.

David and Maria Hitchcock from Ormskirk were on a fortnight’s voyage aboard Marella Discovery 2 – comprising a pair of one-week back-to-back cruises – as part of his 60th birthday celebrations.

Six days in, they were told the first part, “Flavours of the Caribbean,” had been curtailed and was returning to its winter home port of Montego Bay “due to food issues”.

The second part, “Pride of Panama,” has been cancelled altogether.

The couple are currently out of communication contact in the Caribbean; they have decided to stay in Jamaica until their scheduled flight home on 7 February.

But David’s sister, Melanie Hitchcock, told The Independent : “They have been offered roughly a quarter of the total price of the trip back and some vouchers.

“They will never use the vouchers as this was a one-off trip for a special occasion. They prefer to holiday in their caravan with their dogs.”

Some passengers aboard Marella Discovery 2 have complained that the ship appears to be “running out of food”.

Tui rejects this assertion, saying “the ship is currently able to deliver our full food and beverage offering to customers currently on board”.

The ship set sail from Montego Bay in Jamaica last Tuesday, 24 January. She called at Cozumel in Mexico and the Cuban capital, Havana. But the ship is returning early to Montego Bay.

Passengers were offered the choice of staying in Jamaica until they were due to come home or flying back on planes sent to airlift them back to the UK.

They may not be able to travel direct to their intended airport, but coach transfers will be arranged as necessary.

The subsequent cruise, visiting Port Royal in Jamaica, Cartagena in Colombia, Colon in Panama and Puerto Limon in Costa Rica has been cancelled.

The company is offering a “a pro-rata per night refund” and a £300 holiday voucher “as a gesture of goodwill” to those who are on board the ship.

Those who were due to begin their cruise on Tuesday, 31 January, will receive a full refund and a holiday voucher.

A spokesperson for Tui said: “Due to a technical issue with our catering facilities on Marella Discovery 2 we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming Pride of Panama cruise.

“We understand how disappointing this will be and would like to apologise to our customers who have been impacted, and thank them for their patience and understanding at this time.

“Our customer teams are already in contact with those customers impacted and are supporting them with their future travel plans. All customers impacted have been offered future holiday vouchers as a gesture of goodwill.

“ Marella Discovery 2 is currently on day six of the seven-night Flavours of the Caribbean cruise. The Pride of Panama Cruise seven-night cruise, which has been cancelled, was due to commence on Tuesday 31 January.

“The next scheduled cruise on Tuesday 7 February is due to operate as planned.”

Ms Hitchcock told The Independent that her brother and sister-in-law “are terribly upset about this and have been put off the whole idea of going abroad”.

She said they had booked a hotel at a cost of £3,000 for the week when they should have been on the second part of the cruise.

More than 300 fall ill on Royal Caribbean ship; cruise cut short

(Reuters) - More than 300 passengers and crew members fell ill aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, many with vomiting and diarrhea, the Centers for Disease Control said on Sunday. Royal Caribbean confirmed the outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness, saying that the 10-day cruise would end two days early, with the ship returning to its home port in New Jersey. "New reports of illness have decreased day-over-day, and many guests are again up and about," Royal Caribbean said in a written statement. "Nevertheless, the disruptions caused by the early wave of illness means that we were unable to deliver the vacation our guests were expecting." The CDC said in a statement that 281 passengers and 22 crew members aboard the Explorer of the Seas reported becoming sick during the voyage. The ship was carrying 3,050 passengers and a crew of 1,165. The ship was on a Caribbean cruise after departing Cape Liberty, New Jersey on January 21. The CDC said the cause of the sickness was unknown but that an environmental safety officer and an epidemiologist would board the ship in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands to determine the cause of the outbreak and the proper response. The ship's crew increased cleaning and disinfection procedures and had collected specimens from those who reported being ill following the outbreak, the CDC said. "After consultation between our medical team and representatives of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we think the right thing to do is to bring our guests home early, and use the extra time to sanitize the ship even more thoroughly," Royal Caribbean said. The cruise line said it believes the illnesses are consistent with norovirus, a highly contagious virus spread from an infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces, according to the CDC. Passenger rescued after falling off 10th deck of cruise ship, Coast Guard says

A Royal Caribbean passenger was rescued this week after having fallen overboard from the 10th deck of a cruise ship near the Dominican Republic, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Officials were alerted to the rescue of the 42-year-old woman, an American citizen, at about 5:44 p.m. Sunday, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The Mariner of the Seas cruise ship was about 27 nautical miles south of Punta Cana on its way to Willemstad, Curaçao, when the passenger went overboard, the statement said.

“The passenger was recovered alive and reported to be in good health, after reportedly falling into the water from 10th deck of the ship," it said. "No medical evacuation of the passenger was requested by the cruise ship. The passenger was being kept on the cruise ship’s medical facility and later transferred to the Hospital in Willemstad, Curacao for evaluation."

The Coast Guard said it is investigating.

In a statement Wednesday, Royal Caribbean confirmed a passenger went overboard Sunday close to the Dominican Republic.

“The ship and crew immediately reported the incident to local authorities and began searching for the guest. Thankfully, the guest was successfully recovered and was brought on board. Our Care team is now offering assistance and support to them and their traveling party. Out of privacy for the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share,” the statement said.

The ship continued the trip as planned, Royal Caribbean said.

Matthew Kuhn, who was on the cruise ship with his family, told WOFL -TV of Orlando , Florida, that he watched rescue efforts from his balcony.

“I think it was amazing to see everyone was on their balcony. Everyone was trying to help, and the crew was very receptive to everyone,” he said.

Kuhn said that he didn’t expect the passenger to be found alive and that he was pleasantly surprised he was wrong.

“Holy crap, they found her, and she’s alive,” he told WOFL.

Kuhn, who declined to comment to NBC News on Wednesday, shared some videos he posted on Twitter of the rescue efforts.

In one of the v ideo s , a small boat can be seen in the distance and people aboard the cruise ship are heard clapping, whistling and cheering.

10 Ways to Get Kicked Off a Cruise

By Matt Meltzer

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Boat Cruise Ship Ship Dock Port Water Waterfront Pier Human and Person

Getting kicked off a cruise is a lot easier than you think. Those ships are private property, and even if you’ve paid for the trip in full , you at some point signed an agreement that allowed the cruise line to kick you off if it deemed your removal necessary for the safety and comfort of other passengers. Royal Caribbean , for example, states it “may remove any guest from its vessel, when such refusal or removal of the guest is reasonably necessary in the Cruise Line’s sole discretion for the guest’s comfort or safety, for the comfort or safety of other guest or the Cruise Line employees, or for the prevention of damage to the property of the Cruise Line or its guest or employees.”

That, of course, is pretty broad. So we dug a little deeper and found ten specific things that will get you kicked off a cruise.

Not Having the Paperwork

Typically, a cruise is a trip to a foreign country, which means you’re going to need a passport to get onboard. If you don’t produce one at check-in, typically, you won’t be allowed entry. It’s not so much getting kicked off, as not being allowed on.

You’re Banned from a Country

Let’s say you booked a cruise with a stop in Istanbul, and failed to mention to the cruise line you’d been banned from Turkey for some reason you’d rather not go into publicly. If Turkish immigration alerts the cruise line, it will toss you from the ship prior to arrival in Istanbul .

Miss the Muster Drill

This isn’t like sleeping through the safety demonstration when a flight attendant is teaching you how to fasten a seatbelt. The muster drill is the one thing on a cruise where attendance in mandatory, and back in 2012—shortly after the Costa Concordia disaster in Italy—both Holland America and Seabourn had highly publicized incidents where passengers were removed for “ non-compliance ” because they skipped the muster drill.

Practice Poor Time Management

Few things in this world are more hilarious than watching a group of sunburned cruise passengers weighed down by bags of 3-for-$10 t-shirts, sprinting after a cruise ship that’s slowly pulling out of port. Cruise employees call this the Run of Shame, and it happens when passengers visit a port, lose track of time, and miss the ship’s debarkation. The ship will leave without you, and if you’re late getting back, your choices are either meet it at the next port or go home.

Bringing Drugs Onboard

You don’t have to be like the fine young ladies who mistook the MS Sea Princess for a really slow-moving cigarette boat, and tried using it to smuggle $23 million worth of cocaine . Just tipping off the drug dogs (which often come aboard at a new port) will get you the boot, and possibly a few nights’ stay as a guest of the local government. And U.S. search and seizure laws don’t extend to ships either—refuse to have your room searched, and cruise lines will kick you off as well.

Throwing Anything Overboard

Tossing anything overboard—food, errant plates, a spouse who just can’t master the concept of breathe-right strips—is a big no-no. One poor Aussie reportedly had his cruise ended by simply flicking a cigarette butt off the deck in Bali. But honestly, throwing stuff in the ocean is a pretty crummy thing to do anyway, so nobody will have sympathy when you’re forcibly removed.

Impersonating Crew

You wanna wear your favorite Captain Stubing outfit on dress-up night to give your friends a good laugh? That’s fine. You wanna pose as a cruise doctor and spend five years treating passengers you don’t have authorization to treat? Not fine. Pretending to be a crew member—whether it’s the captain or just someone who makes colorful animals out of bath towels—will get you thrown off a ship instantly.

Getting Ill

Obviously, someone with a highly contagious disease shouldn’t be traveling on the giant floating incubator that is a cruise ship. And if you’re found to be patient zero in a dysentery outbreak, you’re out. But cruise lines will also eject passengers they feel are gravely ill, more for their own safety than that of other passengers.

Cruise lines don’t even care if you’re an F-list reality TV “star,” as Bad Girls Club ’s Judy Jai learned in 2015 when she was thrown off a cruise in Jamaica after getting into a fight with her cabin-mate AC Style. Or Trace Adkins, who left a ship and checked into rehab after getting into a fight with a passenger who was apparently butchering his songs at karaoke . Moral of the story: Use some restraint if you disagree with someone aboard ship. They’re not worth losing the rest of your vacation.

Throwing a Fit, or Otherwise Being Verbally Abusive

You don’t even need to get physical to get thrown off a cruise ship. Causing a commotion with words will also rate an ejection. Just ask Foxy Brown, who back in 2011 got so enraged when the onboard salon couldn’t accommodate her manicure —after she showed up three hours late—that she was booted when the boat docked in the Cayman Islands.

10 Things That Can Get You Kicked Off a Cruise

Things That Can Get Cruisers Kicked Off a Cruise Ship

Sharing is caring!

Have you ever wondered if people can get kicked off a cruise ship? The answer is yes!

Although it’s not very common, there are some things that can get cruise passengers booted off the ship. We all agree to a cruise contract when we embark on a cruise, which includes a guest conduct policy.

There have been some highly publicized and lesser known times that people have been “disembarked” before they planned.

In this post I share the 10 biggest reasons people can be kicked off a cruise ship, and what happens.

Things That Will Get Cruisers Kicked off the Cruise Ship

passenger kicked off cruise ship

1. Refusing to Attend Muster Drill or Complete Safety Briefing

All cruise passengers are required to attend the muster drill or complete a mandatory safety briefing, usually before the cruise ship leaves on embarkation day.

While I’ve never heard of anyone not doing it, since this is mandatory, this is a reason that cruisers can get kicked off the cruise ship.

2. Fighting or Disruptive Behavior

passenger kicked off cruise ship

Disruptive behavior, which includes fighting on cruise ships, is never a good idea and can result in people being disembarked at their own expense. In fact, after some cruise ship fights made it into the cruise news, some cruise lines are reinforcing their code of conduct policies for guests.

On Carnival Cruise Line’s website , they state that “disruptive behavior is not tolerated and any guest whose conduct affects the comfort, enjoyment, safety or well-being of other guests or crew will be disembarked at their own expense and banned from sailing on Carnival in the future.”

In addition, violations can result in a $500 fine and a reimbursement of expenses incurred by the cruise line.

3. Throwing Things Overboard

Cruise passengers are not allowed to throw anything overboard! These days, cruise lines take seriously their responsibility to protect the ocean and communities where they sail. Guests are not permitted to throw things overboard, no matter how big or small.

Throwing things overboard could result in a large fine and getting kicked off the cruise ship at the next port of call.

There is one possible exception, a burial at sea, tossing the ashes of a loved one from the cruise ship. However, there are requirements for this, and cruise passengers should contact their cruise line if they wish to inquire and make arrangements.

4. Offensive Language & Verbal Abuse

passenger kicked off cruise ship

Let’s face it, when you’re on a cruise ship you are part of a community that needs to live together for at least a few days. So, every guest is expected to behave in a way that doesn’t make things unpleasant and that is generally respectful towards others.

Cruise passengers shouldn’t be verbally abusive to other passengers or cruise ship crew.

There are some obvious things not to do on a cruise ship, that will be disrespectful or offensive to crew or other guests. However, less obvious, but best avoiding, is wearing offensive graphic t-shirts with swear words ect.

5. Medical Reasons

Unfortunately, cruise passengers who become seriously ill may need to be disembarked so that they can get the appropriate medical interventions. This is never something we like to think about, but one of the reasons everyone should get travel insurance for a cruise .

6. Smoking in Non-Designated Areas

passenger kicked off cruise ship

Cruise ships take anything related to fire safety very seriously. This is one of the reasons why most cruise ships do not allow smoking on cruise cabin balconies. Smoking cigarettes is allowed in certain designated smoking areas only.

Related: 63 Things Not to Do on a Cruise (rules, guidelines & cruise etiquette)

7. Theft or Any Crime

Commit a crime on a cruise and expect to be detained and possibly arrested at your next cruise port of call. Cruise ships actually have a brig, or small jail, which they can use if needed.

8. Bring Illegal Drugs Onboard the Ship

Bringing illegal drugs onboard a cruise ship is not allowed , and is likely to result in being denied boarding, without refund or compensation.

These days, many people wonder about Marijuana, especially since it may be legal in some jurisdictions. However, cruise lines adhere to Federal laws, and therefore do not allow weed or other marijuana products (even medicinal) to be brought onboard cruise ships.

9. Climbing on Cruise Ship Railings

passenger kicked off cruise ship

Cruise passengers should never engage in dangerous behaviors, and this includes climbing on the interior or exterior cruise ship railings.

Dangerous and reckless behavior, like taking selfies on cruise ship railings, can get you kicked off the cruise ship!

In fact, 2019, there was a woman who was removed from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship for taking an Instagram photo by standing on her balcony railing. The cruise line took it so seriously, that they banned her for life.

Sadly, there have been cruise passengers who have fallen and the situation didn’t end well, and other stories similar to this.

10. Disturbing Behaviors

This seems to need a category of it’s own, as there are a variety of disturbing behaviors that can get people booted from a cruise ship.

While in many cases, some passengers who misbehave may get a warning or a good talking to. There have been cases where people who exhibit disruptive or disturbing behaviors on a cruise are left off at the next port of call.

Couple Kicked off Tui Cruises Mein Schiff 5

Some recent examples include a case where a couple claim they were kicked off a cruise ship for being intimate “too loudly” on a cruise. Apparently they forgot they left their cruise ship balcony door wide open and it seems that their “passion” created a disturbance for others.

YouTube Stars Kicked Off Cruise for Pranks

On Celebrity Summit, YouTube pranksters, The NELK Boys got kicked off after just 20 hours onboard. They document it all in a video on their channel. However, the gist is the YouTube stars went on this cruise and “pranked” passengers and crew with some rude and disruptive language and behavior.

The final straw came when some members of the group heckled the cruise director, a comedian, and the Captain of the cruise ship.

10 Foolish Mistakes that Can Get You Kicked Off the Cruise Ship Immediately

Are you going on a cruise? Don’t do any of the things below that can immediately get you kicked off the cruise ship!

Bringing Guns and Firearms to the Cruise

One way to get yourself kicked off a cruise ship and, worse, arrested at the port is to bring guns and ammunition on a cruise ship. You’d think no one would be that stupid to do it.

Unfortunately, recently, there was a man who got arrested in Grand Turk for bringing in ammunition. He claims that the ammos were inadvertently left in his backpack, and he forgot to take them out before going on the cruise. If convicted, he faces 12 years in prison sentence for bringing ammunition since Turks and Caicos has strict firearms and ammunition rules.

Bringing Drugs

Bringing drugs on a cruise ship will get you kicked off the ship immediately. Even if the drug is legal in your port or home state, it is still not allowed on cruise ships. Despite its legalization in many states, marijuana is considered an illegal drug on cruise ships.

A woman was banned for life from Carnival cruises for bringing in CBD gummies on the cruise. She had CBD gummies in her backpack, which she claimed she used as an occasional sleep aid. The security team in Miami discovered the gummies. Despite the gummies being legally purchased and CBD being conditionally legal in Florida, Carnival cruise lines prohibit all CBD products, regardless of local rules in the cruise port.

As a result of this seemingly minor mistake, she was banned from all Carnival cruises for life! Better to be safe; don’t even try bringing any drugs onboard the ship!

Standing on the Balcony Railings

Doing stunts that endanger your life can get you immediately kicked off the cruise ship. A woman foolishly stood on a balcony railing during a Royal Caribbean cruise. Although she didn’t fall, another passenger captured her dangerous act on camera. The ship’s staff discovered this and promptly instructed her to disembark at the next port!

Jumping off the Cruise Ship

You’d think this is obvious, but jumping off the cruise ship can get you kicked off the cruise. A man and his friends were goofing around on a Royal Caribbean cruise, trying to film a stunt for social media. The man ended up jumping off the ship from a railing, hoping to create a viral video. Luckily, he survived the jump without serious injuries, but both he and his friends were promptly asked to leave the cruise.

Fighting on the Cruise

Getting into a fight or getting too drunk on a cruise can land you in the ship’s jail. Yes, cruise ships actually have a small jail on board. If you’re not sent to jail, they might confine you in your cabin, which is like being on “cabin arrest” – you’re not allowed to leave. Or, in the worst case scenario, they could even kick you off the ship at the next port.

Unsafe behavior

Be careful of what you post on social media because a passenger got banned from Carnival Cruise for posting unsafe behavior while on a cruise. A passenger was banned from Carnival cruise lines after sharing her dubious money saving tip on social media.

The passenger uploaded a brief video demonstrating how she drank the water in her cruise cabin. To avoid paying for the bottled water in the room, she filled it with tap water and sealed the cap with glue. The post quickly went viral, resulting in the passenger being banned from Carnival Cruises!

Smoking

Smoking can get you kicked off the cruise ship. Some cruise ships have designated smoking areas, but if you smoke outside these designed areas, you can find yourself getting kicked off the cruise ship. Smoking on your private balcony is a big no-no and can get you kicked off the ship.

Remember, if you’re a smoker, play it safe and check with the cruise staff exactly where you are allowed to smoke so you don’t get in trouble. Also, make sure to properly extinguish your cigarette bud since fire is a major hazard on a cruise ship.

Tampering with Emergency Equipment

Cruise lines take safety as a number priority. Don’t tamper with safety equipment that is for emergency use only, such as life jackets. Don’t think about pulling the fire alarm; you’ll be immediately kicked off the ship. The lifeboat is also off-limits. Don’t touch it or, worse, climb into it—you’ll be asked to leave the cruise ship!

Underage Drinking

Underage drinking is a big deal on cruise ships. Just because you are sailing on international waters does not mean there is no minimum drinking age. Most cruise lines that are based in the US will impose a minimum drinking age of 21 years old, while other cruise lines will have a lower minimum drinking age of 18 years old.

Double-check with the cruise line to make sure you are not breaking any rules. Even if you’re found buying alcohol for an underage drinker, you are also guilty and will be kicked off the cruise ship!

Stealing is a major offense that can get you kicked off the cruise ship. Even if it’s a joke, it will not be tolerated. The cruise line will not hesitate to ask you to leave the cruise at the next port. Check out:  11 Anti-Theft Cruise Tips that Every Cruiser Needs to Know

Are you going on a cruise? Don’t do any of the things below that can immediately get you kicked off the cruise ship! Bringing Guns and Firearms to the Cruise One way to get yourself kicked off a cruise ship and, worse, arrested at the port is to bring guns and ammunition on a cruise […]

10 Things That Will Get You Kicked Off A Cruise Ship

yes you can get kicked off a cruise ship

You've planned your cruise to the West Coast for a long time. It's all you've thought about for months. The plans to see Catalina Island and all the other destinations there have you obsessing so much that people are starting to think you met someone new. Now it's the big day. You begin your cruise and then one of these things happens. Then you find yourself heading back home. Here are the ten things that can get you kicked off a cruise ship.

Forgetting Documents

The first thing that can get you kicked off your cruise ship is one that prevents you from boarding. You must have the correct documents at all times. Of course, heading to the West Coast doesn't have the same requirements as international cruises. You still need certain documents to board. You'll always need a government-issued form of identification. Make sure the picture on it is current. Keep them in a little bag with you. Many passengers buy bags that go under their shirts, accessible at the front. That can also protect you from pick-pockets at port stops.

Skip the Muster Drill

The votes are unanimous for the second thing that can get you kicked off a cruise ship. Boarding the ship requires a muster drill, so you know the rules of the seas for safety. If you fail to show up, you could face the consequences. While you might not get booted from the ship, do you want to take the chance? Regulatory agencies do this on the sea, and so do cruise ships. They give you one make-up chance. Blow it off twice, and the next port could be your final destination.

Getting Sick

The third thing isn't about you doing anything wrong. It's still something that can happen to anyone. If you get sick on the trip, you could find yourself placed in quarantine until you're better. That could mean several things along the way. Unless it's simple, you could very well find yourself on a plane back home at the next port. There are some ways to make sure you don't get sick, of course. Make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date. Stay on a regular sleep schedule, and eat well. Even the healthiest people find themselves in this situation for no reason at all. It's bad luck. Stay away from people who have colds or places where exposure is more likely to occur. Keep your vaccination passport on you, too. You never know when it's needed. Remember to keep masks on hand as well.

Arrive Late

The fifth thing that can be a problem is a late arrival. If you don't show up when you're expected at the ship, they will leave without you. While that doesn't exactly get you kicked off, they typically won't wait for you. Your choice is to fly to the next port and board there. Far too many passengers find themselves at the port after port, running to try to board after the ship has left the port. Screaming won't make them stop. There are security protocols, and one of those is being on time. So always make sure you are.

Bad Behavior

Next on the list at number six is bad behavior. It's simple to avoid this. Unless you behave like those people who insist on behaving rudely, you'll be fine. There are so many stories of people getting kicked off their cruise ship because of this issue. One of the most common stories is how a passenger throws a fit over something and upsets another passenger. Smiling and being polite can help protect you against that other passenger that seems to go around picking fights with everyone. Just smile and ignore the people who try to start something. You can actually report them to the staff if you feel uncomfortable or think someone is trying to upset another passenger. The basic rule is to never be that person.

Disrespect the Staff

Number seven might upset you if your mode of communication is to demand things. When you go on a cruise, you're expected to behave respectfully to the staff. That includes things like trying to get into the staff's quarters. It might seem unbelievable, but some passengers try to go where they shouldn't. Don't make that mistake, or you could find yourself kicked off the cruise ship. Curiosity can kill the cat, and in this case, get you booted from your cruise.

Drinking Too Much

At number eight, you have drunken behavior. While you're more than welcome to have a few drinks and have fun, you better have that under control. If you get out of control, you'll find yourself kicked off. Watch your alcohol consumption, and only drink where it's allowed. Make sure to eat something when you drink as well. Some people try to enjoy one on an empty stomach. That's not a good idea.

Lewd Behavior

Number nine is something most people don't try. Some passengers try to do things they shouldn't in public places on the cruise ship. Any lewd behavior will get you booted from the cruise. Forget arriving at any destination on the West Coast. You might even get arrested in a foreign country. The stories are amazing. It's unbelievable how much trouble you can get yourself into if you decide to get frisky in the wrong places.

Drugs Are Bad

Number ten involves the use of drugs. If you bring them on the ship and get caught, then you can expect to leave at the next port. It's not exactly what you want for that cruise that you dreamt of for months. You won't get to see anything on the West Coast if you try to do drugs on your cruise.

All these things are really just common sense. It's amazing how often you hear stories of people fighting on cruises. They end up being forcibly removed from the ship. There are so many things that are basic rules that people don't even think about. For example, only children that are potty-trained can go in the pool. The basic rule of thumb is to remember your manners and don't drink too much. Oh, and wear a watch.

Royal Caribbean Passenger Kicked Off Ship For Dangerous Selfie

A Royal Caribbean passenger who climbed over the railing of a balcony in order to snap selfies was booted from the ship at its next stop. Since then, some have suggested the woman should not be given any more attention. But there’s a reason to make sure as many people read about the incident as possible, even while we avoid naming the shutterbug.

Passenger Banned For Life

low AL Aerial008

In the wake of the episode which took place aboard the Allure of the Seas , Royal Caribbean released a statement to various media outlets addressing what had happened. “A guest was observed recklessly and dangerously posing for a photo by standing on her stateroom balcony railing with the help of her companion,” said Jonathon Fishman, manager of corporate reputation for the cruise line. “Security was notified and the guests were later debarked in Falmouth, Jamaica, as a result of their actions and are now banned for life from sailing with Royal Caribbean.”

The whole thing came to light thanks to fellow passenger Peter Blosic, who saw the woman’s antics, snapped a photo and then showed it to the guest services staff. He also posted the photo to social media, captioning it, “Just witnessed this on Allure . What an absolute idiot. You cannot fall off of a ship unless you are acting like a moron!”

Paying The Price For Bad Behavior

Over the past few years, stories about people behaving dangerously, usually in order to capture the moment on camera, have become almost commonplace. Too often, those stories wind up bringing the person exactly what they were hoping for in the form of clicks, likes, views and attention. Think of it as a modern take on that old saying about there being no such thing as bad publicity.

Celebrity Summit

But it’s important to note that in nearly every one of those cases, including the one cited here, the end result was the person (and often their traveling companions) being booted off the ship. Royal Caribbean’s Guest Conduct Policy very specifically addresses unsafe behavior. “Sitting, standing, laying or climbing on, over or across any exterior or interior railings or other protective barriers,” it reads in part, “is not permitted.”

In a section titled, appropriately enough, “Consequences,” Royal Caribbean outlines what will happen to those violating the policy, including the following:

“Removal from a ship at the next port of call. Guests removed from a Royal Caribbean International ship pursuant to this policy are responsible for their own accommodations and transportation home, at their expense. Documentation requirements for re-entry into the guest’s home country are also the responsibility of the guest.”

In the case of the unnamed photo-snapping woman, she and her traveling companion were disembarked in Jamaica and left to find their own way home at their own expense and, as previously mentioned, banned from the cruise line for life.

Reporting on the punishment, not the act itself, is what those of us who love cruising should make sure is spread far and wide whenever incidents such as this take place. Because the type of people who will see these stories not as cautionary tales but tips on how to become famous on Instagram or YouTube should be made to think twice before taking the risk.

Given the mindset of people who attempt these stunts, it’s unlikely to make a difference. But maybe, just maybe, a few will be made to think twice. And maybe, just maybe, that will be enough to prevent someone from undertaking the kind of moronic stunt that could easily result in serious injury or death.

Oceania cruise ship rescues 68 migrants from stalled fishing boat, 6 dead

MADRID - A luxury cruise ship  rescued 68 migrants trying to reach the Spanish Canary Islands in a fishing boat that had stalled in rough seas, Spanish authorities and the cruise operator said on Thursday.

Six people died in the incident.

The archipelago has become the main point of entry to Spain for illegal migrants from Africa in recent years and the route is also the deadliest. Migration rights group Walking Borders said last week that nearly 5,000 migrants died at sea on that route during the first five months of 2024.

Bulk carrier Philipp Oldendorff sighted the boat adrift 440 nautical miles (815 km) south of the island of Tenerife on Wednesday and provided first assistance to the migrants, while the Insignia cruise ship was diverted to the area to pick up the survivors, the Spanish Coast Guard said in a statement.

The Insignia, which is owned by Miami-based  Oceania Cruises , also recovered three bodies from the boat. Bad weather prevented the recovery of another two bodies so the ship left a locating device to facilitate the search.

The small luxury cruise ship, which has a capacity of 670 passengers, is undertaking a 180-day trip around the world that started in January.

"Safety of life at sea is of paramount importance for all seafarers," said a spokesperson for Oceania Cruises, which is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

"We can confirm that the Insignia rescued 68 people from a vessel in distress between Cape Verde and Tenerife, brought them onboard for medical assistance and provided food, drinks, clothing and a safe place to rest," the spokesperson added.

A Spanish Coast Guard vessel was en route from the Canary Islands on Thursday to meet the Insignia and then locate the shipwreck.

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - The Hoffmann Family of Companies has bought yet another big Mackinac Island transportation businesses. It announced the purchase today of the Mackinac Island Ferry Company, formerly known as Star Line.

With this purchase, the Florida-based private equity firm now owns both passenger ferry companies that service Mackinac Island. The Hoffmann group bought Shepler’s ferry service in 2022.

The private firm also purchased the island’s Sip n’ Sail boat cruise company earlier this year, and also owns the local newspapers, including the St. Ignace News, which was the first to announce the sale today.

Passenger prices for both ferry lines are set by contract with Mackinac Island officials and do not change during the season.

Mackinac Island Ferry Company is known for its summer Hydro-Jet ferries that have the showy rooster-tail water sprays behind them. In the winter, the company holds the sole winter contract for ferry service with its thick-hulled Mighty Huron.

“Joining the Hoffmann Family of Companies heralds a new era for Mackinac Island Ferry Company,” Jerry Fetty, CEO of Mackinac Island Ferry Company, said in a statement released by the new owner. “Our diverse fleet, including Hydro-Jet ferries, catamarans, classic ferries and pirate ship, will complement their marine division while maintaining our unique identity. We are optimistic about the future, dedicated to maintaining our high standards of service, contributing to the thriving Mackinac Island community and continuing to invest in our future.”

Just recently, the company kicked off another season of its Good Fortune Pirate Ship ferry, which does daily runs between the island and the mainland. It also offers family-friendly and Nauti Pirate cruises in the evenings.

No terms of the deal or a sale price has been disclosed.

The Hoffmann Family of Companies put out a statement on the sale today, emphasizing how buying this second ferry company expands their firm’s lucrative holdings in the Mackinac area, including the island, St. Ignace and Mackinaw City.

“With this expansion, HF Companies now owns more than 116 parcels of land, including docks in Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island, and St. Ignace, 51 buildings and 6,500 parking spaces,” the company said in a statement posted on its website. “This makes the company the largest owner of real estate parcels in the area and employer to 500 people in the Mackinac area.”

Jenny Gezella, president of Hoffmann Marine, will be on the island this season to ensure a good transition, Co-CEO Greg Hoffmann said. Between the two ferry companies, there are about two dozen boats that are in daily service.

Mackinac Island Ferry Company also has the Mackinac Marine Services shipyard, set up in 2019, under its marine umbrella. With this second ferry company acquisition, it brings Hoffmann Marine’s fleet to 46 vessels stretching across seven states.

“We are thrilled to acquire the Mackinac Island Ferry Company, further expanding our presence in the Mackinac community and marine industry,” Gezella said. “Our commitment to providing first-class, efficient transportation remains steadfast, and we look forward to continuing to serve both residents and visitors to this special island.”

The Hoffmann Family of Companies’ owners have backgrounds in real estate and private equity investments. According to the company, it has 9,000 employees spread across its business interests in 30 countries. This includes a wide array of holdings like Hertz Arena and the Florida Everblades hockey team, and vacation-based transit companies like The Naples Princess & Miss Naples boats and Naples Transportation & Tours.
