PGA Tour releases 2022-23 schedule, including major changes to the FedEx Cup

PGA-Tour-Logo.jpg

Icon Sportswire

The PGA Tour released its full 47-event schedule for the 2022-23 season, the last wraparound campaign before the tour switches back to a calendar-year-based schedule beginning in 2024.

Notable changes include the BMW Championship moving from Wilmington Country Club in Delaware back to the Chicago area, with Olympia Fields playing host to the second of three FedEx Cup playoff events after staging a fan-less BMW in 2020. Just 70 players will qualify for the first playoff event next season, the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, down from the 125 that have made it to the postseason since the FedEx Cup began in 2007 . These 70 will be fully exempt for the following season, while players outside the top 70 will compete for FedEx Cup points and additional status in a series of fall events.

Fifty players will advance from the FedEx St. Jude to the BMW, with the top 30 qualifying for the season-ending Tour Championship, which wraps on Aug. 27.

The top-50 finishers in the FedEx Cup playoffs—so, those who qualify for the BMW Championship—will be eligible to compete in a series of international events. Details of this international series are expected to be released later this year, but the tour’s release says the limited-field, no-cut events also will be open to the top performers in the fall series.

MORE: The PGA Tour's new plan for keeping its stars

Both of the first two FedEx Cup playoff events will see their purse increase from $15 million to $20 million, part of widespread increases in prize money payouts for events throughout the upcoming season. The Sentry Tournament of Champions will have a purse of $15 million, up from $8.2 million, and the three player-hosted invitationals—the Genesis Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday—as well as the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play will offer $20 million in prize money, all up from $12 million. The FedEx Cup will once again feature a $75 million prize pool, while the Comcast Business top 10 will pay $20 million to the top 10 finishers in the FedEx Cup regular-season standings. The Player Impact Program will include $50 million in total bonuses.

The match play is the only World Golf Championship event on the schedule after the cancellation of the WGC-HSBC Champions event in China.

MORE: The latest FedEx Cup points standings heading into the 2021-22 regular-season finale

The season once again begins at the Fortinet Championship (Sept. 15-18) in Napa, which will take place the week before the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. The CJ Cup, which was held in South Korea from 2017-19 before moving to Las Vegas for 2020 and 2021, moves to Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina. The RSM Classic (Nov. 17-20) will be the last PGA Tour event of 2022, with the season picking up again at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii after New Year's. After two events in Hawaii the tour heads to the west coast for The American Express and the Farmers Insurance Open, which will finish on a Saturday for the second-consecutive year. The following week will see Phoenix play host to both the WM Phoenix Open and the Super Bowl.

The rest of the schedule looks almost identical to that of 2021-22, with notable exceptions including the Rocket Mortgage Classic moving to late June and the 3M Open sliding one week later and serving as the penultimate event of the FedEx Cup regular season.

A few things to know about the pga tour schedule in 2022, share this article.

uspga tour schedule 2022

The calendar has flipped and we leave 2021 in the rearview mirror. Bring on 2022.

So what’s new and different in the new year for the PGA Tour?

There’s a new TV and streaming deal in place, so keep that smart TV remote handy. There’s a few tournaments with new dates on the calendar—but the Waste Management Phoenix Open will still ride shotgun with the Super Bowl. And the two major men’s tours are co-sanctioning an event for the first time.

There’s still some familiarity with the schedule. The Players will be in March, the Masters is a fixture in early April, the PGA Championship returns to May for the third time in the last four years, the U.S. Open has its traditional spot in June and all eyes will be on the Old Course for the Open Championship in July.

But there’s plenty of other changes to note, so check them out here.

New media-rights deals in place for CBS, NBC, ESPN+

On January 1, 2022, a new nine-year domestic media rights deal goes in to place for the PGA Tour that will feature a change to PGA Tour Live and how the FedEx Cup Playoffs are televised each year.

CBS Sports is set to broadcast 20 events and begin network coverage with the Farmers Insurance Open. NBC Sports gains rights to all three FedEx Cup playoff events for the first time and remains the Tour’s cable partner via Golf Channel, which will carry early-round and lead-in weekend coverage of every FedEx Cup event. ESPN will debut as the Tour’s digital partner with ESPN+ serving as the distributor of PGA Tour Live beginning at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Farmers Insurance Open has a Saturday finish

The Farmers Insurance Open, to be played the last week of January, will have a Saturday finish. With the NFL expanding its season, the NFC and AFC championship games will be played Jan. 30, forcing the PGA Tour’s hand.

Thus, the annual gathering on the South Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course (with one the first two rounds played on the North Course) in San Diego will be played Wednesday through Saturday, with the final two rounds being aired on CBS and both featuring an 8 p.m. ET finish.

Patrick Reed is the defending champion.

Pebble Beach, Phoenix Open switch spots

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (Feb. 3-6) and the Waste Management Phoenix Open (Feb. 10-13) traded spots in the schedule, as the PGA Tour’s event at TPC Scottsdale remains in its traditional date of Super Bowl week. Super Bowl LVI is will be at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles Feb. 13 due to the NFL’s new 17-game regular-season schedule.

PGA Tour will co-sanction a DP World Tour event

abrdn Scottish Open

For the first time, the PGA Tour is co-sanctioning a DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) event, the Scottish Open.

The player field will be a split between members of both Tours and competitors will earn FedEx Cup points — a first for a European Tour event. Likewise, European Tour competitors will have access to the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship and Barracuda Championship opposite-field events and the field will earn points in the DP Tour’s Race to Dubai for the first time.

WGCs go from four to two

Jordan Spieth

The World Golf Championships will be sliced in half from four to two, as the WGCs will now be the Dell Match Play Championship and the HSBC Championship in China. The FedEx St. Jude Championship is now the first of three FedEx Cup Playoff events while the Mexico Championship is now a “regular” full-field event.

First visit to Delaware

The 2022 BMW Championship will be played on Wilmington Country Club’s South Course, the first PGA Tour event in Delaware. Exact dates have not been determined, but it will likely be in late August.

It marks a return of professional golf to Delaware. The LPGA Championship had been held at DuPont Country Club in Rockland in front of huge galleries from 1994 through 2004, following the LPGA McDonald’s Championship being there from 1987-93. The Bell Atlantic Classic on the Senior (now Champions) tour had been held just across the Delaware border at Hartefeld National Golf Club, in Avondale, Pennsylvania, in 1998 and 1999.

The PGA Tour’s most lucrative cash grab—the FedEx Cup bonus pool—will lavish even more money on top players, jumping to $75 million from $60 million last season and the next FedEx Cup champion will receive $18 million. Patrick Cantlay won $15 million for his victory in August.

Other bonus schemes designed to reward elite players will also see sharp increases in ‘22. The controversial Player Impact Program grows to $50 million from $40 million. The Comcast Business Tour Top 10—which bonuses top-performing players at the end of the regular season and before the FedEx Cup playoffs—will double its riches to $20 million. The Tour has also created a new bonus scheme from which most members stand to gain. The Play15 program will give $50,000 to every player who makes at least 15 starts.

The PGA Tour's Signature Events Had Worthy Winners in 2024, But Still Need Some Work

I t is nearly impossible for the PGA Tour and its signature events to deliver the type of outcome intended for these tournaments that are meant to enrich the players while bringing together as many of the best in the game as possible for the enjoyment of the fans.

Scottie Scheffler did his best to do his part.

Scheffler’s playoff victory over Tom Kim on Sunday at the Travelers Championship gave him four victories out of the eight signature events, which saw their first year in this format come to an end, with revisions surely to come.

These big-money, small-field events that were borne out of the need to compensate the best in the game at a higher level—and in five of the eight cases offered guaranteed money—have largely met their goal.

Not every tournament will be compelling, not every event will have a big-name winner.

But in seven of the eight signature events—albeit it four of them won by Scheffler—a previous major champion was the winner.

Chris Kirk, who captured the Sentry in January, was the only non-major winner to prevail. Wyndham Clark, who won the 2023 U.S. Open, captured the shortened AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama won the Genesis Invitational.

After that it was all Scheffler (Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Memorial and Travelers) except for four-time major champion Rory McIlroy, who won the Wells Fargo the week prior to the PGA Championship. Scheffler did not play that week. McIlroy skipped this week.

And therein lies one of the potential issues with the signature events—the schedule. In an effort to avoid isolating regular events between the biggest tournaments, the PGA Tour sought to make sure there was at least a run of two such smaller events preceding a signature event—one as a vehicle for qualification but also so a tournament such as the RBC Canadian wouldn’t be stuck between a signature event (the Memorial) and a major (the U.S. Open.)

And yet, that brought on its own problems. It means, for example, that players not in the signature events or the U.S. Open had no place to play the last three weeks.

It also put someone like Scheffler, who tied for 45th at the U.S. Open, in the position of having to decry winning at the Memorial because the event might have compromised his abilities at the major championship.

That issue has already been dealt with as the Memorial is moving to two weeks prior to the U.S. Open next year.

And the Tour has already said that going forward, signature events will have a minimum of 72 players.

Which leads to another discussion point. Why not more?

Why limit these events to so few players when you could easily justify a more robust field?

It’s been suggested that all of the signature events should have 100 players with a 36-hole cut. If the compensation issue is a problem, figure out a way to pay everyone who misses the cut.

That big of a field seems a non-starter so the Tour should at least assure 78 players, something easily accomplished via the current FedEx Cup points list, current-year Tour winners and even the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

The Tour gives up its “everyman” mantra with these signature events and has upset many of the rank-and-file who are now competing in regular events that pay less than half of the $20 million purses and also significantly less FedEx Cup points (750 to the winner versus 500). At least let a few more of them into the big-time events and see if the schedule can’t be a bit more reasonable so as not to burden the best players.

“It’s been a lot,” said Collin Morikawa, who finished second to Scheffler at the Memorial and also has been a frequent contender recently. “I feel like this year has just felt a little bit more of a sprint, let's call it. But I think that's just because of the season, not having a fall portion or at least not having a fall portion that's counted towards this season.

“I think that's an adjustment, but I have nothing wrong with it. Every other sport they're playing every day, every few days. Granted, our weeks are a lot longer and, we get pretty drained as well, but a lot of these tournaments I would have played no matter what, wherever they were on the schedule, and you kind of work them in. So it kind of worked out in my favor where I wanted to play the week before a major, a lot of 'em lined up like that. So just kind of continue that.”

Bryson's victory tour

Bryson DeChambeau crammed a lot into the week following his U.S. Open victory, including visits to the Today show in New York along with various other appearances where he took the U.S. Open trophy.

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , he took the trophy into the audience.

And then he brought it to Lower Broadway in Nashville in advance of the LIV Golf Nashville tournament, which started Friday and concluded Sunday.

By Saturday, DeChambeau was admittedly running out of energy, even if his golf had not fallen off.

“My brain is not fully functioning so I’m not able to speak coherently all the time,” he said. “But the fans have been fantastic. They’ve been brilliant. Very gracious to have them out there supporting me like that.”

Tyrrell Hatton proved too much on Sunday, winning his first LIV Golf event by six shots. DeChambeau tied for third, seven strokes back in what was a solid effort given the enormity of his victory a week ago and all that transpired.

It was his best finish in nine LIV events this year and only his second top five.

But he was tied for sixth at the Masters and second at the PGA Championship prior to his U.S. Open win.

“I’m impressed,” said Jon Rahm, when asked about the inevitable post-major hangover. “Especially taking into account that he went and did the whole New York news shows. I didn't do that. I played the week after (his 2023 Masters win) in Hilton Head and it was quite difficult and tiring.

“But we saw Scottie (Scheffler) win the week after (the Masters at the RBC Heritage) this year, and Bryson seems to be a guy who naturally has a lot of energy. I would never question him being able to perform.

“I think it becomes more a mental thing, right? Can you focus on still playing good golf even though you’ve accomplished something incredible? I think he’s in good enough shape physically that he can handle it, it’s just being able to do it mentally.

“I think one of the things that is never really talked about enough about players ... obviously like Tiger (Woods) or Jack (Nicklaus), is the fact that they were able to win multiple majors in a season consistently, and I don’t think most people understand how demanding that is mentally, just to get that done, the media obligations you have afterwards amongst all those things.

“It’s definitely impressive to see what some other players have been able to do.”

The last player to win two majors in the same year was Brooks Koepka (U.S. Open, PGA) in 2018. Jordan Spieth (Masters, U.S. Open) did it in 2015, and Rory McIlroy (British Open, PGA) did it in 2014. Prior to that, Padraig Harrington (British and PGA) was the last in 2008.

Woods won multiple majors in a year in 2000 (U.S. Open, British, PGA); 2002 (Masters, U.S. Open); 2005 (Masters, British) and 2006 (British, PGA).

Nicklaus won two majors in a year in 1963 (Masters, PGA), 1966 (Masters, British), 1972 (Masters, U.S. Open), 1975 (Masters, PGA) and 1980 (U.S. Open, PGA).

Arnold Palmer: American hero

Scottie Scheffler is on an amazing roll, having won his sixth tournament of the year on the PGA Tour and matching a feat not accomplished since Arnold Palmer in 1962: six victories prior to July 1. Tiger Woods never did that, nor did Jack Nicklaus.

But Scheffler has a little ways to go in order to match an interesting feat that Palmer accomplished at the Masters: he was in eight consecutive green jacket ceremonies from 1958 through 1965.

Think about it: Arnie won the Masters in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964. That made him part of giving the jacket to the winner the following year: to Art Wall in 1959, Gary Player in 1961, Jack Nicklaus in 1963 and Nicklaus again in 1965.

Martin Davis highlights this and many other aspects of Palmer’s life and career in his large book called Arnold Palmer: American Hero . Stripped across two pages are photos of Palmer from each of those Masters ceremonies.

This is the seventh such book Davis has done in a large 11-by-14-inch format that is filled with essays and photos, some never seen before. The book weighs eight pounds and follows other books he’s done in similar fashion on Ben Hogan (two), Byron Nelson, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and the Ryder Cup.

“We always wanted to do this and I thought it just was the wrong time,” said Davis of a book on Palmer, who died in 2016. “This just seemed like the right time while people still remember him fondly.

“What we do with these books are what I would call love stories. There’s no heavy criticism. They’ve all been formatted the same way, with essays on different aspects of their lives.”

Among them were stories written by players such as Gary Player, Nancy Lopez and Peter Jacobsen, Palmer’s good friend and former LPGA commissioner Charlie Mecham and by his longtime assistant and former newspaper writer “Doc” Giffin, who worked for Palmer for more than 50 years.

In all, there are more than 20 essays in 272 pages with more than 300 photos, which include an analysis of his swing and his putting.

“One of the joys of the book is all the photos. Where do you find them?” Davis said. “A lot of them you’ve seen before, like throwing his hat in the air at the ’60 (U.S.) Open (at Cherry Hills) when he won. There’s a lot of them that have never been published and we probably looked at more than 2,500 photos. And we try to set ourselves apart with very high production values.”

Davis said he worked on the book for more than four years and the end product is chock full of anything and everything related to Palmer’s golf and life.

Among the neat aspects is a section on Palmer’s letter-writing habit that he got into, sending a note of congratulations after players won various events. There’s the telegram he sent Jack Nicklaus after the Golden Bear won the 1986 Masters at age 46 that offered congratulations and also said: “Do you think there’s hope for a 56-year-old?”

One that is particularly poignant was written in September 2016 and addressed to Paul Broadhurst, who Palmer was congratulating on Broadhurst's senior victory at Pebble Beach and sent to his home in the United Kingdom. It was dated just six days prior to Palmer’s death.

A few more things

Scottie Scheffler became the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to win six times on the PGA Tour prior to July 1. The win at the Travelers Championship gives him victories at the Masters, the Players and four signature events. He’s now won 12 times in his PGA Tour career, all since the start of 2022. He is also the first player with six wins in a season since Tiger Woods in 2009.

Scheffler will take a few weeks off prior to the British Open. He is not planning to play the Scottish Open the week prior as he did last year. After that it’s the Olympics and then the FedEx Cup playoffs. He has earned more than $27.6 million in prize money this year, surpassing the $21 million record he set in 2021.

LIV Golf has a few weeks off before its next event in Spain at Valderamma. That is the week prior to the British Open. Its U.K. event follows the British.

Dustin Johnson turned 40 on Saturday but there wasn’t much to celebrate regarding his golf. His 72–70–75 weekend in Nashville saw him post his worst LIV Golf finish in 29 individual events with a tie for 51st. His previous worst was 37th last year in the season-opening event in Mexico when he was coming off an injury. Johnson, a two-time major champion, has missed the cut in three of his last four majors and his best this year is a tie for 43rd at the PGA.

Tom Hoge and Christiaan Bezuidenhout earned spots in the British Open via the top 20 in the FedEx Cup standings after the Travelers at 18th and 20th, respectively. The exemption is for anyone in the top 20 not already exempt, up to five players.

After 'really tough road,' Bhatia, 21, wins 1st PGA Tour title

  • Associated Press

TRUCKEE, Calif. -- Akshay Bhatia birdied the closing hole in regulation then capitalized in sudden death when Patrick Rodgers found a divot in the fairway. It was enough for Bhatia to win his first PGA Tour title at the Barracuda Championship on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Bhatia, who turned pro at 17, earned full status on tour and a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs. He had been playing under special temporary membership since his runner-up finish at the Puerto Rico Open in March.

"It's obviously been a really tough road," Bhatia said. "I've had a lot of up, a lot of down. A lot of good, a lot of bad. But I knew I was going to get here. It was just matter of time. For it to happen this year with special temporary membership and now to get to play all these events and to get it done today was, I can't even describe it."

Bhatia converted a birdie from about 15 feet on the par-4 18th hole at Tahoe Mountain Club to finish with 40 points under the modified Stableford scoring system that awards five points for eagle and two for birdie while deducting a point for bogey and three for double bogey. The slender left-hander had nine points Sunday.

That was good enough to match Rodgers, who missed a birdie attempt from roughly the same distance on the 18th and scored six points in the final round.

In the playoff, Rodgers' tee shot on the 18th settled in a divot and he chunked his approach. His pitch was well short and he two-putted for bogey. Bhatia left his birdie putt just short and tapped in for the victory.

"I knew that if I got into a position like this, I could do it. I've done it at every level. Man, that felt uncomfortable out there," Bhatia said. "That putt on 18 in regulation was just, man, it's a crazy feeling. I as telling my caddie, like, your brain and everything, you can feel all this adrenaline, all this shakiness. It's pretty crazy."

Rodgers remains winless in 246 PGA Tour starts. The 31-year-old former Stanford star failed to convert a 54-hole lead for the fifth time.

The tournament was co-sanctioned by the European tour, and two players from that circuit tied for third. Julien Guerrier scored 20 points Sunday to finish with 37 alongside Jens Dantorp , who had 15 points in the final round.

Ryan Gerard , also a special temporary member, was fifth with 36 points. He totaled just six points over the final two rounds.

Bhatia largely struggled his first three years after bypassing college to turn pro. He won in the Bahamas on the Korn Ferry Tour at the beginning of 2022 but still fell short of earning a PGA Tour card.

Now he's eligible for some of the richest events in golf, including the PGA Championship.

"I'm in the playoffs now, which was a huge goal for me," he said. "I mean, I'm just excited. I love playing golf, I love playing on the PGA Tour and it's just a dream come true to have it."

Seth Waugh is stepping aside after 6 years leading the PGA of America

Seth Waugh is leaving the PGA of America after six years as CEO, a period marked by a sharp boost in golf participation and PGA membership and moving headquarters from Florida to a massive complex in Texas.

Waugh was the CEO of Deutsche Bank Americas when he joined the PGA of America board as an independent director and then was hired to lead the 30,000-plus members in 2018.

His contract was up for renewal on June 30, and Waugh decided not to renew.

“It feels like the right time, not only personally but professionally,” Waugh said. “We’ve accomplished an awful lot in the six years. The game has never been in better shape. Participation is at an all-time high. It’s growing in all the ways we hoped it would.

“The fastest growth is women and people of color. We try to make the game look like the rest of the world, and maybe have the world behave more like our game.”

Waugh will stay on with the PGA of America in a senior advisory role. He will be at the British Open and Paris Olympics and plans to be part of the Ryder Cup next year at Bethpage Black.

The PGA of America said it has begun a search for CEO including candidates from inside and outside the association. Kerry Haigh, the chief championships officer and a key executive since 1989, will be interim CEO but will not be a candidate.

Image

“We are grateful for Seth’s leadership and for all that he accomplished for our members, our game, the business and our people,” PGA of America President John Lindert said. “He skillfully led us through incredibly challenging times and was always a great partner. We are fortunate to be able to call on him going forward for his always helpful advice and counsel.”

Waugh’s involvement in golf dates back longer than his time with the PGA of America. He was behind bringing a PGA Tour event to the TPC Boston in 2003 — PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan was the first tournament director of the Deutsche Bank Championship — and he has been a key voice in business and golf along the way.

“Seth’s voice on important issues has been steady and stellar as the golf world has gone through unprecedented change during his tenure,” Masters chairman Fred Ridley said.

Among his chief goals when he became CEO was supporting the professionals that spend long hours teaching the game. That includes a deferred compensation retirement plan for PGA of America members.

“The first time in 110 years anyone figured that out. I borrowed from my own background to help with that,” Waugh said. “But our membership satisfaction is at an all-time high.”

He said the average salary for a professional has exceeded $100,000 for the first time, and membership has surpassed 30,000, another benchmark.

Waugh had been been dropping hints since April that he was nearing the end. He signed up for a four-year term as CEO — he compared four years to a college or presidential term — and felt that would be enough time to make changes. He agreed to two more years in 2022 after golf made it through the COVID-19 pandemic with spikes in participation.

Most notably to Waugh was the age of those playing.

“We’re not declaring victory by any means, but the greatest statistic is 48% of all golfers are under the age of 35,” he said. “That’s generational growth, people from 25 playing until they’re 75, as opposed to playing from 65 to 75. It’s such a sea change.

“You realize this generation wants to do things with purpose, and golf has purpose,” he said. “You’re a teacher, a coach, and you have a mission to make lives better. The whole premise why I took this job was I felt I’d never have a chance to have more impact on more lives.”

He had no immediate plans after his board duties at the Olympics.

“I have often said that golf is one of the great engines of good on Earth,” he said. “I am perhaps the biggest all-time beneficiary of that good and I want to thank the membership, my colleagues, all the various board members, past presidents, our extraordinary partners, my peers at all the other golf bodies, as well as everyone who plays and loves our beautiful game for all the support and friendship during this journey.

“What a gift that has been.”

2024 Travelers Championship leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler first since Tiger Woods to win six events in season

Scheffler continues cleaning up at signature events while becoming the fourth golfer since 1983 to win six or more tournaments in one season.

It appears as if last week's U.S. Open was the exception and not the rule as it relates to Scottie Scheffler's level of play this year. The No. 1 golfer in the world had won five of his eight prior events before nearly missing the cut last week at Pinehurst No. 2, ultimately placing T41 for his worst finish since the fall of 2022. Scheffler has immediately rebounded by winning a sixth tournament across his last 10 starts on Sunday at the 2024 Travelers Championship.

The fourth round itself was mostly straightforward for Scheffler ... until the end. His card was clean with five birdies and no bogeys, another 65 in a season full of them. He finished at 22 under, one off of Keegan Bradley's scoring record of 23 under from a year ago. But a disruption on the 72nd hole in the form of protesters -- just before Scheffler lined up a potential tournament-winning birdie putt -- briefly threw the event into chaos.

The scene was cleared quickly, though Scheffler's ensuing putt settled just inches from the hole. That allowed 18-, 36- and 54-hole leader Tom Kim to drain a birdie on the last hole of regulation, forcing a playoff. PGA Tour officials cut a new the hole location amid debris left over from the protestors, and the golfers returned to the 18th to begin the sudden death playoff.

Scheffler took care of business in short order with a par, but Kim's approach landed in a bunker and ultimately led to a bogey.

Over the last 19 holes at TPC River Highlands, Scottie Scheffler did what Scottie Scheffler does. He made good decisions and finished second in the field from tee to green. He let everyone around him fall by the wayside until he was the only one left standing in the end. This is not always how it goes -- sometimes Kim will make birdie in the playoff instead of bogey -- but this is basically how it's gone for most of 2024 for Scheffler.

This week's win for Scheffler was historic. All of them are at this point in his season. Since 1983, only three other golfers have won six times in a year. With two months left in the season and around five events remaining on his expected schedule, Scheffler has a chance to move even further up that list.

Impressively, all of Scheffler's victories in 2024 have come at big-time events. Of the 13 best field in golf this year, according to the Official World Golf Rankings, Scheffler has won six of them (46%).

The six wins: Four signature events, a major championship (the Masters) and The Players Championship. The six winner's checks have Scheffler earning nearly $28 million for the year , $7 million more than he picked up a year ago when he previously set the all-time record for money earned in a single season.

The craziest realization (and best compliment) about Scottie is that this has become rote. Another week, another Scheffler win. Yawn. That has become a bit of the disposition of golf fans toward what is happening. The numbers belie the routine nature of what he is doing though because the numbers tell the following story: This simply never happens.

It's happening this year, though, and Scheffler is architecting one of the great seasons in PGA Tour history with a chance at a second major championship in just under a month and another Tiger-laden step up the historic ladder.  Grade: A+

Here are the rest of our grades for the 2024 Travelers Championship.

2. Tom Kim (-22): It was a tough weekend for Kim, who led this tournament for so long before losing to his birthday buddy and friend, Scheffler, in that playoff. Still, this was Kim's best event of the year by far. He nearly accomplished what nobody else has seemed capable of accomplishing by pulling back even with Scheffler on the 72nd hole and sending the event to a playoff. He now has some confidence built for the summer as he heads to the Open Championship looking to improve upon his T2 finish a year ago. Kim is playing his best golf, and for the last month, he has been the iron player everyone thought he could become a few years ago when he first got going on the PGA Tour. I am broadly neutral on his long-term outlook but impressed by his last several starts. The ceiling is not as high as some might think, but the floor could certainly be higher than I believed. Grade: A+

T3. Tom Hoge, Sungjae Im (-19)

T5. Akshay Bhatia (-18): Bhatia has the look, the charisma and the ball striking ability of a future superstar. It's easy to forget with players like him and Im, who have been on tour since they were teenagers, they are still in their early 20s with decades to go. But Bhatia is four years younger than Viktor Hovland right now. He's making a real leap this year as a player, and he has the numbers to prove it. He's gone from basically being an average (or strokes gained 0.0) PGA Tour player to gaining 1.0 strokes per round on average PGA Tour fields. In other words, that is basically the difference between Martin Laird and Shane Lowry. A big win could be on deck for him.  Grade: A

T9. Cameron Young (-17):  For a while, it looked like 59-59 was in play for Young. As it was, he still took a look at the all time weekend scoring record of 122 set by Ludvig Aberg at the RSM Classic in a win last fall. Young eventually settled at 125 shots for the weekend. He's had an up and down year to date with some moments of good but a lot of bad in between. For example: He has three top fives worldwide this year but no top 20s since the Masters. This is a good jump start for him going into the summer as he tries to contend, like he did the last two years, at the Open Championship. Grade: A

T27. Ludvig Aberg (-11): The finish was not there, but a week after contending for the U.S. Open, Aberg finished 5th in a field of the best hitters in the world in strokes gained tee to green. He seems to be getting more consistently better as his second year progresses, and it does feel like a monstrous victory is on deck. Grade: B

Scottie gets No. 6 and another signature event trophy. Kyle Porter and Greg DuCharme recap the 2024 Travelers Championship. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Scottie wins it with a par at the first playoff hole!

Kim has 36 feet for par after getting out of the front bunker. If he doesn't make it, this tournament is over.

Kim is in a horrible position on his second shot with a fried egg in the front bunker. Scheffler has what looks like 10-15 feet for birdie and a probable win.

capture-2024-06-23-154035.png

Kim and Scheffler in good shape off the tee

Both players hit good tee shots off the 18th tee and should be in good position for a look at making birdie and winning the tournament on the 18th hole.

Travelers Championship playoff rules

Sudden death starting on the 18th hole. If they're still tied, they'll head back to the 18th hole and play it again. After that, it's No. 17 and then 18 again after that.

They are cutting a new hole on No. 18.

capture-2024-06-23-152731.png

It sounds like they might be cutting a new hole for the Travelers playoff between Scottie and Tom Kim, which is wild and not something I've ever heard of a tournament doing. The reason? Protesters throwing smoke bombs onto the green at the 18th hole of regulation.

Tom Kim forces playoff

Wow, Tom Kim just got up and down from the 18th fairway to force a playoff with Scottie Scheffler at the Travelers Championship. Absolutely incredible clutch shot.
