paithan maharashtra tourism

Paithan is a city in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra . Paithani is 56 km south of Aurangabad on the banks of Godavari River. It known in the ancient times as 'Pratishthan', the capital city of Satavahana dynasty and major hub of commerce at that time. Paithan is also the birthplace of Sant Eknath - one of the greatest saints of Maharashtra.

Today's Paithan has fewer but definite signs of the old glory it once carried. The Archeological Survey of India has found remnants from 1st and 2nd century CE around Paithan.

This place is well known for the exquisite saris. It was a trade centre earlier and also the capital of the Satavahanas. Here was a weaving centre where the traditional art is still practiced. It has formed a very important excavation site. - Of the few attractions found nearby, the Jayakwadi dam is a treat to the eyes of the avid bird watchers. Next is the Dnyaneshwar Udyan , which is supposedly Maharashtra's largest garden planned and landscaped on the lines of the Vrindavan gardens at Mysore.

Paithan is 56 km south of Aurangabad . As most people would want to continue to Paithan from Aurangabad, the best way to reach it is by road from Aurangabad which is a state highway. When coming from Pune, one can take the SH60 till Ahmednagar and proceed to Paithan via Shevgaon. Shortest route from Mumbai will be SH2 which starts from Kalyan and goes through Murbad, Malshej Ghat , Aale Phata and Ahmednagar.

The nearest railway station and airport are in Aurangabad.

Paithan is a small city and you can get around on foot. Cycle could be yet another option.

  • Eknath Maharaj Temple Shrine of Sant Eknath that devotees flock during Nath-Shashthi.
  • Paithani Kendra Paithani silk saris are renowned with exquisite zari borders. A visit to the weavers workshop is fascinating and one can order a customised saree as well.
  • nathsagar dam - Dam on River Godavari - Largest river in Southern India. The reservoir is called Nath Sagar.
  • Jayakwadi bird Sanctuary has attracted many species of resident and migrant birds. Almost 200 species of birds can be found in this region, which includes more than 70 species of migratory birds. Out of these, 45 chief species are of international migration. Notable amongst migratory birds are Cranes, Flamingos, Pintails, Wigeon, Shoveller, Brahmany Duck, Pochards, Teals, God Wit, Shauces, Glossy Ibis, etc.
  • Dnyaneshwar Watika - built on the lines of the famous Vrindavan Gardens in Mysore, Pinjore in Haryana and the Shalimar in Kashmir. The musical fountain show is noteworthy. Do not miss the museum that houses remnants found in the excavation done around Paithan. It is at the far end of the garden.
  • Visit Paithani Kendra - Paithanis are exotic, hand-woven saris which is speciality and uniqueness of Paithan.
  • Bird Watching around Jayakwadi Dam and the tail waters of River Godawari
  • Take children to Jnyaneshwar Watika that has puppet and musical fountain show.

A city with many facets, Paithan has played host to a number of important dynasties, movements and aesthetic cultures. It is also the birthplace of Sri Nimbarka, the founder of the Nimbarka Sampradaya tradition of Vaishnavism. The city was also home to Sant Eknath Maharaj, whose samadhi is located here. Devotees flock to the city during the Paithan Yatra, also known as Nath Shashthi. Paithan is important as a Digambar Jain Atishay Kshetra. A beautiful black-coloured sand idol of the 20th Jain Tirthankar, Bhagwan Munisuvratnath, is installed in a temple here.

Tourists can also visit Jayakawadi Dam, which is the first in the world to be made with sand. Nath Sagar Reservoir is an ideal spot for birdwatchers who can spot a number of migratory birds taking shelter here. Archaeologically, Paithan is an important city as a number of antiquities from different historical periods are available on the surface of the mounds here. Excavated antiquities include a variety of beads, terracotta, bangles and coins from the Satavahana period.

Paithan is also popular for the Paithani saree. Every saree is a regal creation of pure silk decorated with threads of pure gold and silver in traditional designs.

Tour: Paithan

Paithan: between nature, tradition and history

Paithan is a small town located at south of Aurangabad.

A peaceful village which was the capital of the Satavahana Empire . This empire ruled the Deccan region between the 2nd century BC and the 2nd century AD. From this glorious past, today only the Paithani sari remained, which are the richest and most renowned saris in India.

According to legends, Paithan was built by King Ila . Ila, who was the king of Bahlika, lost his way in the forest of Shiva during a hunting trip. Shiva furious with this incursion curses the king. He therefore transformed into a woman. Thanks to his prayers to Parvati, the wife of Shiva, He remained alternately man and woman each month but not remembering the events of a stage in the other. As a woman, he married Budh (Mercury, one of the nine planets the “Navagrahas”) with whom he had a son (Pururavas). Helped by her husband who prayed a lot to Shiva, Ila regained his state of man. He left Budh and Bahlika to create the city of Paithan. After him, Pururavas became the king of Paithan.

Paithan city is a historical city in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra and was formerly the capital of Shalivahan King. Paithan gained the religious significance during the reign of King Ramdevrai Yadav. Paithan came to be known as Dakshin Kashi. Around 1312, the Yadava kingdom came to an end and Paithan came under the control of the Mughals. At that time, thousands of Hindus were converted. Until the post-independence period, Paithan was under the jurisdiction of the Nizam.

Paithan has given the world many gems such as Bhaskaracharya, the mathematician who discovered zero, Saint Bhanudas, Saint Eknath, Kavi Mukteshwar, Saint Gavoba, Niranyasindhukar Bhattoji Dixit, Gagabhatta, who coronated Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the descendant of Nath Ramchandrabuva who was specilized in singing and Mayaabuva, Chayaabuva, Kashinathbuva. Similarly, senior Congress leader in the political arena and former Home Minister of India Late. Shankarrao Chavan and others are included in it.

At present, the city of Paithan is making its mark on the world map due to Saint Eknath and its importance is increasing as a place of worship for millions of devotees. The number of devotees who visit for the Darshana of Nath every day is around two to three thousand. And at every Shuddha Ekadashi around one lakh devotees and at Vadya Ekadashi about thirty thousand devotees do come for the Darshana of Nath at Paithan. Eknathashthi is the main festival and five to six lakh devotees from all over Maharashtra come to Paithan for this three-day festival. There are many temples in Paithan. And hundreds of Warkari students study and live in Paithan.

The city has got the status of a tourist area because of the Sant Dnyaneshwar Udyan, Nathsagar, Paithani Saree Kendra etc. The Government of Maharashtra has set up a SantPeetha (Saint University) and it is expected that this project will be made available to public soon.
