How To Spend the Perfect Day in Riyadh

Take a soul-affirming desert trip in Saudi Arabia

Enjoy a day of abundance, luxury and culture with this handy guide to spending 24 hours in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia’s capital city is one of the richest in the world, with a reputation for glitzy shopping malls and momentous new developments – but that doesn’t mean it’s a place that is devoid of culture. Delicious local food, historic sites and soul-affirming desert trips are all on hand to balance the indulgence. Take it all in with Culture Trip’s guide to spending a day in Riyadh.

Riyadh is famous for being one of the wealthiest cities in the world

Start your day with a hearty traditional Saudi breakfast

There are foul houses that serve traditional Middle Eastern breakfast dishes all over the capital, but we love no-frills Foul Tamis near the KFC in Al Wizarat. The service is fast, the food is delicious, and the prices are super-cheap. Your foul (stewed broad beans) is scooped out from a large, traditional, long-necked cooking pot, generously topped with olive or camel oil and lemon juice and garnished with fresh onions and shadda (chilli). Once the staple of the Bedouin, foul is eaten as a dip with complimentary khobz (bread), which is traditionally baked in clay ovens and is very, very large.

Pro tip: Hire a car, as public transport is practically nonexistent in Riyadh.

Start off your morning with a traditional Middle Eastern dish of stewed broad beans

From Foul Tamis it’s a short drive south to the Riyadh National Museum , where your education in Saudi culture and heritage begins. Excellent displays and artefacts are on offer, including an in-depth multimedia story of how the Saudi kingdom was born. There’s even a life-size re-creation of one of the tombs from the ancient Nabatean city of Madain Saleh in the country’s northwest – an enigmatic, soul-stirring sight.

Pro tip: Before leaving the museum, see if you can climb the nearby water tower for great views of the city.

For lunch, keep it light by stopping at the elegant White Garden Café in Al Olaya, as you cross the city to your next destination. Artisan coffee, great meze-style lunch platters and excellent kenafeh (sweets made from vermicelli and cheese) make this a great pit stop.

Pro tip: Remember that offices and shops all close briefly during the five daily prayers in Saudi Arabia.

Wander through Riyadh National Museum’s extensive collection of ancient Saudi artefacts and relics

Discover where the Saudi dynasty began

About 15 kilometres (nine miles) northwest of the White Garden Café, on the very edges of modern Riyadh, sits the UNESCO World Heritage site Diriyah, the ancient mud-brick city where it all began for the Saudi dynasty. It was here, in 1744, that Muhammad ibn Saud, the great ancestor of King Salman, formed an alliance with the local cleric Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab to establish the Emirate of Diriyah (or the first Saudi State).

Today, visitors wander around restored mud-brick palaces that feel like an ode to traditional Najd architecture, beneath which young princes and princesses once played, shaded by shuttered windows. Highlights of Diriyah include the towering, four-storey Salwa Palace (home of the first Saudi monarch), the decorated doors of the Al-Turaif Bath House and the Palace of Saad bin Saud. With its beautifully restored turrets and colourful wooden doors, it offers a fleeting glimpse of Diriyah’s glory days.

Pro tip: Avoid this site during the midday sun, as it’s all outdoors.

Explore the historic city of Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Riyadh

Dine like a Bedouin before scaling red sand dunes beneath the starry desert sky

For dinner, walk across Wadi Hanifah, a valley that cuts through the city, to a branch of Riyadh’s most famous traditional restaurant, Najd Village . Sit in a mock Najd mud house atop richly decorated carpets and lean back on armrest cushions as if in the desert. Traditionally attired waiters will then bring you the house special, in which you dine on their famous kabsa – succulent lamb or chicken in lightly spiced rice – served on a communal tray. Don’t wait for your own plate – you’re doing this Najd-style, so tuck into your corner of the platter, being sure to use only your right hand.

Pro tip: Those feeling energetic could head to Kingdom Centre to watch the sunset, as there is an equally good branch of Najd Village nearby in Al Mathar Ash Shamali.

Riyadh’s Kingdom Centre towers over the city

If you’re not experiencing a rice-induced coma by now, take a drive into the desert, making for the Red Sands southwest of Riyadh near Al Awsat. Find your own space and lay out a large rug beneath the starry sky. Listen to the silence of the desert, with the beautifully sculpted red sand dunes as your backdrop. If you still have energy left over from the day, hire a quad bike from a local Bedouin and scale the sandy dunes or race other city slickers who have made their way out to the desert.

Pro tip: Cheap picnic rugs are available to buy all over Riyadh. Keep one in the boot of the car at all times for stargazing.

Find your own space to lie down and gaze at the sky

Bed down in the most luxurious prison on earth

When you’re done stargazing, the route back to Riyadh passes the most luxurious prison in history: the uber-indulgent Ritz Carlton. Several Saudi politicians and businesspeople briefly found themselves under house arrest here during a national investigation into state corruption. The Ritz is no longer a prison but is now the palatial luxury hotel it was built to be. Pop into the classically European café for a coffee nightcap, brewed with beans sourced from the country’s leading roastery, the Roasting House. If your budget can accommodate it, spend a night in one of their classic, super-spacious rooms, where you can even have your own butler. There’s even a luxury spa on site to soothe away the aches and pains of a day of exploring. In the morning, you can wander the manicured, landscaped gardens and admire olive trees older than the city of Riyadh itself.

Pro tip: If you’re visiting on a special occasion, tell the hotel, and you’ll get an extra-special reception.

FACT’s ultimate itinerary for 24, 48 and 72 hours in Riyadh

Kohinoor Sahota - Deputy Editor

Tick off the bucket list – here are the biggest and best things to do in Riyadh across one, two and three days.

Whether you’re on a layover, holiday or just a local looking to have your own  Ferris Bueller’s Day Off  in Riyadh, we’re here to help you make the most of the city.

Saudi Arabia is one of the final frontiers when it comes to tourism. The Kingdom only started issuing tourist visas in 2019, which makes it appealing for the intrepid traveller who wants to visit rarely-seen sights.

Riyadh derives its name from the word garden and refers to the small oasis towns in the area 500 years ago. The city is a whopping 1,973 kilometres squared and is largely flat on a grid system. Tip: the best way to get around is through Uber.

Today, Riyadh is a fast-paced, ever-expanding capital. Combining the old with new, UNESCO World Heritage Sites sit alongside ultra-modern developments. The city boasts a population of more than seven million people. Plus, since more than 70 per cent of people are under 30 years old, it creates exciting energy.

While Riyadh is still conservative – dressing modestly is a must, and arms and legs should be covered – rapid change is underway. His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is seen by many as a reformer. Once banned activities, from cinemas to concerts, are now flourishing, and there is a buzzing cultural scene.

So, whether you’ve got 24 hours, 48 hours or 72 hours, this is how to make every second count. Note: the working week runs from Sunday to Thursday, the weekend is on Friday and Saturday, and many places are closed on Friday morning.

Here’s our curated Riyadh itinerary featuring must-visit cafés, galleries, restaurants, bars and beaches. The city awaits.

Day one: 24 hours in Riyadh

Travel back in time and walk in the footsteps of Saudi’s royal family. Across UNESCO World Heritage sights, historical palaces and traditional souqs you can learn about the kingdom’s unique history.

Watch the sunrise at The Edge of the World

Road trip time. The Edge of the World is located about 90 minutes outside of Riyadh, and can be accessed via hiring a car or a group tour. The soaring rocks date back millions of years. Put on your hiking boots for the steep climbs and rugged terrains, but you are rewarded spectacular view. Visit at sunrise or sunset, as it’s cooler. Car rental services include Budget Rent a Car, Hertz Car Rental and Lumi Car Rental. Note: guests can currently only visit on weekends.

24 hours in Riyadh

Have a traditional Saudi breakfast at Give Me Five

If you’re after a relaxed breakfast, then head to Give Me Five . The affordable menu includes classic Saudi dishes, plus Middle Eastern favourites, which range from shakshouka to foul jarra. The quirky décor includes brightly coloured seats, indoor trees and pots hanging from the ceiling. The photographs of Saudis in traditional dress give it an old-school edge. The karak will help kickstart your day. Plus, it serves breakfast from 4.30am to midday.

24 hours in Riyadh

Visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Diriyah

Diriyah is steeped in history and is located in the Al Turaif district, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1727, it was the kingdom’s capital and the seat of power for the Al Saud family. Today, there are plans to redevelop the area into an even bigger tourist destination with luxury shops, restaurants and hotels.

Diriyah

Visit Riyadh’s oldest mall, Taibah Souq

Get ready to haggle. As one of Riyadh’s oldest shopping centres, you can pick up traditional items. We’re talking scarves, spices and street food. Plus, there is jewellery ranging from diamonds to gold.

Taibah Souq

Lunch like a local at Najd Village

No trip to Saudi Arabia is complete without sampling the national favourite. Kabsa is essentially a rice and meat dish, which is served on a sharing platter. The meal is like a biriyani, mixing together long-grain rice with chicken, lamb, camel or fish. Najd Village is one of the oldest restaurants in Riyadh serving Najd cuisine – so go old school and sit on the floor. There are multiple locations in the capital, and the nearest on this trail is in Olaya.

Najd Village

Get a glimpse of royalty at Al Murabba Palace

If it’s good enough for King Abdul Aziz, it’s good enough for us. Visit the King’s ancient palace, which was built in the traditional Najdean style. The King’s personal belongings are on display, from his glasses to a Rolls-Royce gifted to him by Winston Churchill. Plus, in 1948, the first-ever lift in the city was installed in this very building, as it helped the King who was suffering from arthritis. Note: double check the seasonal opening hours.

Al Murabba Palace

Learn history at the National Museum of Saudi Arabia

Here are your keys to the kingdom. The museum tells the nation’s story, and is a great way to learn about its heritage. The exhibitions range from Neolithic rock art to replicas of old Jeddah, plus there are guided tours for all ages.

24 hours in Riyadh

Travel back in time at Al Masmak Fortress

The 150-year-old clay and mud fortress is a great example of history in the heart of the capital. In 1902, King Abdulaziz captured the fortress and took control of the city. It was from here that King Abdulaziz united the provinces, and modern-day Saudi as we know it today was created.

24 hours in Riyadh

Watch an auction at Souq Al Zal

It’s time to go old-fashioned and watch an auction in action – Saudi style. While these largely take place in Arabic, they are thrilling to watch. The auctions are part of Saudi tradition, and here’s your chance to watch it in action – and grab an antique.

Souq Al Zal

Dinner at Suhail

Suhail translates to shining star in Arabic, and this restaurant may well be one on the Riyadh dining scene. The restaurant gives traditional Saudi food a high-end upgrade and serves mouth-wateringly good lamb shoulder, lamb kabsa and pumpkin ravioli. The interiors are inspired by AlUla’s landscape, and there are private enclaves where you can sit.

Suhail

Day two: 48 hours in Riyadh

Riyadh is a bustling metropolis with soaring skyscrapers, celebrity chefs, luxury malls and architectural wonders. This is well and truly a global city, so it’s time to visit the blockbuster sights. It’s time to go large.

Have a hero’s breakfast at The Ritz-Carlton, Riyadh

Perhaps the most famous hotel in the capital, The Ritz-Carlton, Riyadh puts on a showstopping breakfast and brunch. Indulge in a sumptuous spread of Middle Eastern and international dishes. The breakfast is served daily from 6.30am to 11am, and the brunch is served on Fridays from 12.30pm to 5pm.

The Ritz-Carlton RIyadh

Go exploring in Rock Park

Go international and visit the Diplomatic Quarter, also known as Al Safarat. There’s an international feel to this area, as it is home to embassies from around the world. Rock Park is great for all ages, as there are walking trails, picnic spots, climbing frames and football pitches. Plus, look out for the walking trail around Tuwaiq Garden, which has views of the outstanding Wadi Hanifa valley.

24 hours in Riyadh

Refresh yourself at Press’d Juicery + Kitchen

After all that walking, refuel with a freshly pressed juice. This nearby juice bar has fruit on display, plus indoor and outdoor seats. The juices range from Beeting Heart with beetroot, orange, apple and ginger, to Berried Alive with mixed berries and lime.

Press'd Juicery

Relax in a private suite at Al Faisaliah Spa

If you look at Riyadh’s skyline, you’ll spot the Al Faisaliah Tower. The architectural wonder includes a round orb inside a soaring skyscraper. If you’re after some me time – all that sightseeing wears you out, after all – then spoil yourself and visit the spa. The signature royal hammam treatment includes a steam, scrub, massage and mud wrap. Go grand and book the opulent private Imperial Spa Suite.

Al Faisaliah

Have a leisurely lunch at Al Faisaliah Hotel

Make the most of being in Al Faisaliah Tower. Mamo Michelangelo can be found in  Al Faisaliah Hotel , and brings Italian hospitality and Provençal charm from Antibes, France, to Riyadh. A charming setting, colourful crockery and an ingredient-driven menu combine to create an instantly memorable meal full of Italian charm. Unmissable dishes from the menu include the creamy burrata from Napoli, lamb shoulder perfectly cooked in the wood-fired oven, and the signature truffle focaccia.

Mamo Michelangelo

Hit high-end shops at Via Riyadh

Drop some serious riyals at this luxury mall, which is home to top designers and brands. The swanky stores at Via Riyadh sound like a Fashion Week line-up – Dolce and Gabbana, Elie Sab and Tom Ford, anyone? Plus, you’ll have stars in your eyes, thanks to the sparkling range of jewellery and watch brands. Via Riyadh also boasts celebrity chefs, state-of-the-art cinemas, world-famous fashion brands, and a five-star hotel – The St. Regis Riyadh, no less. Translated: that’s 23 shops, 17 restaurants, 7 cinemas and one hotel.

Via Riyadh

Stop by the world’s largest coffee shop, Al Masaa Café

Sample coffee culture, which fuels so many workers in Riyadh. Have a cup (or three) at Al Masaa Café . The venue is the world’s biggest coffee shop, as it has 1,050 seats and can serve 1,000 people at a time. The menu includes classics and creative twists on the classic cup of coffee.

The Kingdom Center is one Riyadh’s most iconic buildings. The soaring tower is 300 meters high and is a must-visit tourist attraction on the 99th floor. The observation deck and glass walkway are a great way to get your bearings and a snap (or reel) for the gram. Plus, on the 77th floor is the King Abdullah Mosque, which is the highest mosque in the world. Tip: visit at sunset for a spectacular view.

Kingdom Centre

Have dinner at world-class restaurants

Plus, there are international favourites, from contemporary Japanese at ROKA to modern Chinese at Mr Chow.

LPM Riyadh

Watch live entertainment at Soho Club

Let live musicians, DJs and singers entertain you. Inspired by London’s Soho, you’ll feel like you’re in the West End. Crowds with men and women –  and  female performers – were once not allowed, but are now the norm. The drinks include classic mocktails – grab the mojito which comes in a mint, berry and passion fruit flavour. With a night (and day) this showstopping, you’ll want an encore.

24 hours in Riyadh

Day three: 72 hours in Riyadh

Riyadh may well be one of the hippest cities in the Middle East. Ever since it opened up its cultural scene, there has been a wave of new cinemas, concept stores, and concerts. Get your cool on.

Breakfast at Wabi Sabi

Make like a millennial and visit Wabi Sabi . The hipster vibes are real, thanks to the jungle chic interiors and vegan menu. The breakfast dishes include banana, blueberry and chocolate chip pancakes. Plus, overnight protein oats and chia pudding. Don’t miss the hidden concept store – it’s upstairs! – and sells fashionable abayas and artwork.

Wabi Sabi Riyadh

Grab a juice to go from Signature Juice Bar

A short walk away, you’ll find this cool kid’s juice bar. The juices include fresh grapefruit, pomegranate and watermelon juice. The Signature mocktail comes with mango, strawberry, avocado, banana, kiwi and pomegranate. Plus, there are Oreo, mango, strawberry and banana shakes.

Signature Riyadh

10.30am

… or a coffee from Half Million

A short taxi ride to Olaya, you’ll find this trendy homegrown brand. Created by two friends, there are outlets scattered across the city. Settle into one of the seats in industrial chic décor. Drinks include americano, cappuccino, espresso and latte, plus iced drinks and mocktails. Sweet treats include Nutella donuts, cookies, lotus cake, and pistachio eclairs.

Half Million Riyadh

Check out the concept shop 83 Store

Concept stores just keep coming in Riyadh, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. This concept store fuses tradition with modernity, as the Middle Eastern items all have an edge to them. Great for females, the range includes abayas, kaftans and scarves in bold prints.

24 hours in Riyadh

Find your next read at Jarir Bookstore

New York has Barnes & Nobles, London has Daunt Books, and Saudi Arabia has Jarir Bookstore. Founded in 1974 by Saudi’s Abdulrahman Nasser Al-Agil, it was originally a small establishment selling books and art. Today, it is the largest retailer of books in the kingdom .  The nearest branches on you trail are located in Panorama Mall and Olaya.

24 hours in Riyadh

Eat, browse, shop, and repeat at Panorama Mall

In true Riyadh fashion, a mall is never  just  a mall. Panorama Mall is a funky building with an undulating roof and rollercoaster running through the food court. Pick up modern brands including adidas, DKNY, Fred Perry, FILA and Sketchers. Warning: there are no changing rooms in Saudi malls. Try not to get too distracted and grab a bite at one of the many restaurants: Urth Caffé has organic vegan and vegetarian options; BB Social serves modern Asian food; and EL&N is an Instagrammer’s dream.

Panorama Mall

Start art hopping at L’Art Pur

Founded in 1999, L’Art Pur is one of the largest galleries in Saudi Arabia, as it comes in at 540 meters squared. This a great spot to learn about upcoming Saudi talent, as the gallery is committed to supporting young talent.

24 hours in Riyadh

Continue your art trail at Naila Art Gallery

This contemporary art gallery aims to provide a platform for local and international artists. Bringing together sculptures, fine art, video, digital and conceptual art, its past exhibitions have covered everything from Arabic calligraphy to Saudi National Day. Plus, there is an online store where you can buy artwork.

Naila Art Gallery

End your art tour at Lakum Artspace

This contemporary art space is all about accessibility and has become a cultural hub. The venue includes a gallery, library, shop and café. The previous artists exhibited include Abdullah Alothman, Ahmed Mater and Fahad Almajhadi.

Lakum Artspace

The clothing collection includes oversized T-shirts from XO, bright hoodies from EJ and statement jumpers from Studio 23. Plus, there are caps, glasses and plenty of gift ideas.

Number Nine Concept Store

4.30pm

Grab coffee at the steampunk-inspired Pandemic Coffee

Another  coffee shop? Stay with us. Coffee shops in Riyadh don’t get quirkier than the homegrown Pandemic Coffee. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped in an episode of  The Crystal Maze , as there are staff in boiler suits and glass domes with seats. Dishes are presented in whacky ways, too – there’s a pink mannequin head with a wig of candyfloss, and on a tray with a cake and sweets.

24 hours in Riyadh

Partake in a once-banned activity – and go to the cinema

Going to the cinema might sound like a strange thing to do when you’re on holiday, but trust us. As cinemas in Saudi Arabia only reopened in 2018, a visit is unlike anywhere else in the world.  Black Panther  was the first-ever movie in the kingdom after the 35-year ban. In The Esplanade, you’ll find Vox and Muvi.

24 hours in Riyadh

Strut your stuff down stylish U Walk

This trendy stretch of café, restaurant and shops comes alive at night. The 900-metre-long stretch is lit up and has seats sprawling onto the terrace. Pop into the concept stores, which cover beauty and perfume – lookout for We Cre8, which has Saudi-inspired gifts. If you’re hungry now, choose from Loft, Hoka, Khanin, and the salt sprinkling pro, Nusr-Et.

U Walk

Feel the vibes at Boulevard Riyadh

The city should now start to feel electric. Boulevard Riyadh in the happening Hittin is packed with energy on the weekends. If you haven’t eaten dinner, choose from Sultan’s Steakhouse, Morini Riyadh and High Joint. If you have eaten, grab dessert at Madeleine Boulevard – sit upstairs, if you want a quiet spot.

24 hours in Riyadh

Watch (or join) an open mic night at Syrup Lounge

Let out your inner Kelly Clarkson. Syrup Lounge is ground breaking, as it was one of the first entertainment venues to open in Riyadh. The highlights include the weekly karaoke nights and open mic nights. You’ll be impressed by the local talent, which includes singers in English and Arabic. While your trail has been leading north, this venue is located on the northwest outskirts.

Get your midnight munchies at Al Baik

Did you think Saudi’s biggest export was oil? Think again. It may well be Al Baik, the much-loved homegrown fast-food chain, which garnered queues around the block when it was launched in Dubai. End on a popular note – the four-piece chicken meal deal. Thank you, Saudi Arabia and goodnight.

Excellent Day Trips From Riyadh

Take a break from the hubbub of the city.

With the sweltering sun tucked away and a calming breeze out to play, the Najdi winter is the perfect time to head on a day trip. Owing to Riyadh’s central location, a day trip from the city can unlock so many historical sites and nature’s marvels of the Saudi hinterland. Here we sum up some of the best day trips from Riyadh.

Explore Al Qassim’s Rich History

Head to the village of Oyoun Al Jawa, which is one of the oldest inhabited places in Al Qassim. Wander through the old town with its well-maintained adobe houses standing as a stark contrast to the new town that developed around it. There’s a historic souq nearby so don’t forget to buy those heaps of dates that Qassim is famous for.

Understand Arabia Of The Past At Ushaiger

Immerse yourself into traditional Arabian life at the charming village of Ushaiger. What’s best about the place is that the historic village owes its current well-preserved state to its residents who took on the task of preserving the dwellings of their ancestors upon themselves. Uncover facets of old Arabian life as the proud people of the village retell glorious stories of their forefathers.

Discover One of Najd’s Hidden Canyons

Wadi Mawan, the canyon stretches for miles and is an astounding natural wonder. It’s best seen after rains where one can see the rainwater meandering through its crevices.

The BEST Saudi Arabia Itinerary: 1-Week Riyadh to Al Ula Road Trip

Saudi Arabia Itinerary

In recent years, Saudi Arabia relaxed their borders inviting many international tourists of varying backgrounds (and not just for pilgrimage) . Until June 2018, Saudi Arabia was the only country in the world that forbid women to drive cars. Because the country is slowly changing every year, now is a better time than ever to discover the hidden gems before any crowd does too. Yet deciding where to go in such a large country is not easy!

Between the sheer size of the country and its differing terrain, there aren’t many other means to explore Saudi Arabia that enlightens the true sense of adventure other than hiring your own car. However, understandably so, the routes, rental cars and rugged landscapes can become quite overwhelming even throughout the planning process of your independent tour. Try not to be intimidated; a road trip in Saudi Arabia is totally doable!

Table of Contents

Independent road trip, riyadh to al ula tour package, can i drive from riyadh to al ula, how far is it from riyadh to al ula, is it safe to drive across saudi arabia, are foreigners allowed to drive in saudi arabia, how many days are enough for saudi arabia.

Don’t have time to read this now?  Pin this blog for later .

The BEST Saudi Arabia Itinerary: 1-Week Riyadh to Al Ula Road Trip 7

Saudi Arabia Itinerary (1-2 Weeks)

The very idea of an independent road trip around Saudi Arabia, and the stamina that would be required to follow through with the itinerary, may seem like an enormous undertaking. Nonetheless, being on the road is an adventure in itself! Accomplishing your own independent road trip would allow for so much more flexibility; you’ll find many more opportunities to stop for photos, eat where you fancy and take detours wherever your heart desires. Although you should look away now if you aren’t great at long distances…

For your reference, the mileage of my entire journey (part of this Saudi Arabia itinerary) reached over 2,775 kilometres – that’s 1,724 miles . Each mile of this personal figure was split between Dammam, Riyadh, Buraydh, Hail, Ul Ala, Al Taif, Riyadh and then the ‘Edge of the World’. This sequence of destinations and Saudi Arabia itinerary will be most suitable for 10 days to a fortnight, whereas, in my experience, I completed the route in one week. This would depend on many factors, one of them being the number of drivers your group will have to share the miles.

This table should give you a rough idea of how much driving will be involved…

Potential Route

Depending on the flight costs, you could begin your journey in Dammam, Riyadh or Jeddah. Each city and town has many car rental companies. This enables customers to drop off their vehicles in a separate location from the collection.

Riyadh (1-2 nights)

As Saudi Arabia’s capital city, the options for accommodation in Riyadh are endless (though not without a demanding price tag) . Remember to save time for a day trip to the mighty Edge of the World, too.

Buraidh (0-1 night)

Buraidh is the capital of the Qassim province; a place that claims to have the best dates in the country! Although I personally did not stop for too long, you could use this as an excuse to break up the journey.

Hail (0-1 night)

Hail’s central-northern location enables the city as a gateway for travellers in the region. It’s a good stopover between Jubbah, AlUla and Riyadh. The province also contains two UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Al Ula (1-3 nights)

Deep in the desert of the north-western region of Saudi Arabia lies Al Ula, home to the country’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a bucket-list destination for our planet that is growing in popularity.

Jeddah (1-2 nights)

As the traditional gateway to Mecca, with a coastline of dive sites and a year-round warm climate; Jeddah is a fascinating major city. With an international airport, you could even finish your trip here.

Taif (1-2 nights)

Situated 1,700 metres above sea level, Taif is like any mountainous city; it’s home to one of the most scenic roads in Saudi Arabia, leading to a tranquil setting often characterised by clouds and cool weather.

The BEST Saudi Arabia Itinerary: 1-Week Riyadh to Al Ula Road Trip 8

Saudi Arabia is built for the convenience of travel with vehicles so there are plenty of car rental shops in every city. Ideally, you’ll want a 4WD (or any vehicle higher from the ground) to truly experience the country between the cities. However, for money’s sake, we believed that our 2WD Toyota was sufficient for the journey.

Our car rental cost 1477 SAR (393 USD) for six days with unlimited mileage, insurance and the ability to drop off the car at another destination (which in our case was Riyadh Airport) . Any additional drivers would be chargeable.

In order to save money, and hours of boredom, find a small group of people to split the car, fuel and accommodation costs.

For other information, check out the guide on renting a car in Saudi Arabia .

The process of refilling your vehicle will be straightforward in Saudi Arabia. In fact, you will not even have to leave your car! Simply drive next to a pump with an attendant, open the tank from within  (if necessary)  and state how much fuel you’d like to purchase. Regardless of the difference in language, most attendants will understand basic words, such as “full”.

Thankfully, fuel is gobsmackingly cheap in Saudi Arabia, especially in comparison to the rest of the world – although this additional cost to your budget will vary depending on the size and type of car. To pay, debit and credit cards are widely accepted but the likeliness of this convenience decreases the further you drive away from the major cities. Take enough cash – just in case!

The Driving

If you’ve travelled to other Middle Eastern countries, being the passenger of a car in Saudi Arabia will not feel too dissimilar to the chaos you may have experienced before. However, from the driver’s seat, it can be intimidating and overwhelming for a number of reasons – learn more here .

There are a minimal amount of checkpoints along Saudi Arabia’s network of roads. Compared to Iraq and Syria, they are a breeze! In fact, the guards don’t seem to be interested 90% of the time.

For more information, including tips on driving in the country, check out the Beginner’s Guide to Renting a Car in Saudi Arabia .

Accommodation

You are most likely to find the cheapest accommodation for Saudi Arabia on Booking.com . Plus, in some instances especially in my personal experience, booking online was even cheaper than negotiating in person.

Overall, you’ll notice that the ratings and reviews for hotels in Saudi Arabia can be low, even though the quality of the places themselves isn’t noticeably as bad as they describe. Arabs have a tendency to review harshly, so don’t feel frightened into booking a pricier hotel. Once you’ve arrived, the Saudi receptionists tend to offer a viewing of the room before you commit too, although I personally never felt it to be necessary.

There is one other important note for those travelling with genders other than their own…

In Saudi Arabia, unmarried couples are not permitted to live together in the same household; they aren’t even allowed to share the same hotel room. If you arrive with a group of differing genders, the hotel staff will likely ask for a marriage certificate during the check-in process. You should book separate rooms to avoid any hassle.

From the glitz of the Ritz to the tranquillity of Habitas in Al Ula, here are some recommended hotels…

Riyadh –  We were comfortable at the Rose Garden . If riyals aren’t an issue, see the Al Faisaliah Hotel or the Four Seasons ; they are the most prominent buildings in the city!

Buraydh – The Towers Hotel is an affordable option with breakfast. If you are in need of an entire place; stay in a chalet at the Tuba Resort along this Saudi Arabia itinerary.

Hail – The Olive Suites will serve the best value for money in the city of Hail but the Millennium Hail Hotel boasts three different swimming pools. Both are great options!

Al Ula – Habitas AlUla offers panoramic views and instagrammable Bedouin interiors amongst the sand and stars. Alternatively, there are plenty of Airbnbs to choose from too.

Taif – For budget travellers and small groups, the Gate Hotel Suites were more than sufficient (for us) . Though if you’d prefer, the Velar Inn Hotel has a pool and a fitness centre as well!

Jeddah – From the luxuries of Crowne Plaza to a night with good value for money in the Mirage Hotel , both hotels are centrally located for a convenient stay along this Saudi Arabia itinerary.

Cost Breakdown

Saudi Arabia is, unfortunately, not a great destination for budget travellers.

The official currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR). It is common to make payments with credit and debit cards in major cities, and ATMs are widely available too. As you travel further afield, you should be prepared with cash instead.

Below is an example of the big expenses of our trip…

What to Pack

There are many shopping malls and supermarkets in Saudi Arabia, so you wouldn’t be short of any place to buy supplies or missing items. On the other hand, you could be prepared in order to save your precious time for the road ahead.

Cigarette Charger

With a driver, co-driver and passenger, there will be plenty of devices to be charged time and time again. Increase the number of charging ports by utilising the cigarette socket too.

Toilet Paper & Tissue

Saudi Arabia is a land of little toilet paper, but bum guns all around. Stock up on tissues if you wouldn’t like to make a pitstop without them; there’ll be few places to find them otherwise.

Filtered Water Bottle

The water in Saudi Arabia is not drinkable. Therefore, visitors will have to rely on plastic bottles. To avoid the over-use of single-use plastics, travel with a filtered water bottle.

Mobile Plan

It’s highly recommended that visitors pick up a local SIM card before leaving their first city, you could even pick one up at any international airport. This will be invaluable for navigational purposes and staying connected during emergencies.

STC, the mobile network company, offer the best coverage across the country; there’ll rarely be moments without any signal. An STC SIM card can be purchased at international airports upon arrival, or at any branch within the cities. In order to do so, you will need your passport and your visa paperwork.

If convenience is your ultimate goal, check out Airalo for either a local, regional or global eSIM. Airalo is the world’s first eSIM supplier. You can purchase the most suitable prepaid data plan without visiting any shop or swapping physical SIM cards. This is the technology we digital nomads have been waiting for!

Are you feeling overwhelmed? Navigating the roads of this Saudi Arabia itinerary can be a headache, culture shock, time-consuming and expensive, especially if you are managing the journey as a solo traveller. Thankfully, there are plenty of organised tours that will enable you to experience all of the above with much greater simplicity.

Mid-Range Tour

Riyadh, Ushaiqer, Buraidah, Medina, Al Ula

Begin your tour in Riyadh to finish in Jeddah. The Explorer Tour will be unforgettable if you so choose to embark on the 9-day tour . It includes hotels, flights, transport and more!

Luxury Tour

Riyadh, Edge of the World, Jeddah, Al Ula

Start and finish in Riyadh along a 10-day luxury tour (with an exhilarating helicopter ride in between) . This includes the hotels, an expert guide, meals, transport and more!

The BEST Saudi Arabia Itinerary: 1-Week Riyadh to Al Ula Road Trip 9

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch (or post in the comments below) .

Yes, it is possible to drive between Riyadh and Al Ula. The entire journey will take approximately 11 hours via Buraydah and Hail. For more information on hiring a car, read the Beginner’s Guide to Car Rentals in Saudi Arabia .

It is approximately 1,050 kilometres (650 miles) from Riyadh to Al Ula. Don’t forget you’ll have the drive back too though!

Whilst the roads are in generally good condition, the safety standards of the local people aren’t as high a standard. Fortunately, they are improving as the police are patrolling the busier routes and many speed cameras are on watch. Click here to learn about the potential dangers of driving in Saudi Arabia .

Foreigners are permitted to drive in Saudi Arabia if they hold a valid driving license with an accompanying International Driving Permit (IDP).

It isn’t impossible to gain an insight into the country’s incredible landscapes, history and hospitality within a few days, but visitors will have a much more valuable experience with a well-planned Saudi Arabia itinerary. You wouldn’t see much without at least a week in Saudi Arabia considering each city, or place of interest can easily be anything from a 6 to 10-hour drive away. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia is an expensive country. Therefore, you should find a suitable amount of time between 1-4 weeks that matches your value of time and money.

June 28 girls camp trip day #1.

56a3ee69 81c1 4395 a6bc 558d4ef8b430.jpg?ixlib=rails 2.1

Yesterday marked the first Girls Camp Trip day, filled with excitement and adventure for everyone. Our freshmen had a fantastic day in Old Forge, enjoying pizza, watching “Inside Out 2,” and doing a little shopping. The sophomores explored the Wildlife Center in Tupper Lake where they explored different animals, such as fish, turtles and otters, and went on nature walks. The walks included a jungle gym that the girls had a blast climbing. Our juniors were busy practicing for their performance for Friday night, fine-tuning their acts and getting ready to shine on stage. The seniors had a blast at the Enchanted Forest Waterpark! The girls did not let the chilly weather get in the way of their fun splashing down water slides, spinning on amusement rides and shopping for their new camp sisters. After dinner, we all gathered for the much-anticipated Dutch Auction. campers filled a pillowcase with items they expected to be called at the auction. Each bunk earned points for having the called items, and the excitement in the air was palpable. SUPY won the night by just one point. Congratulations to the winning bunk!

Where do Floridians go to escape summer heat? 10 Florida day trips to help you stay cool

The heat of Florida’s summers can sometimes make outdoor activities like hiking or the beach unpleasant.

If you’re looking for a way to have fun and stay cool, Florida’s many freshwater springs or an indoor adventure might be your best bet.

Here’s a roundup of 10 fun things to do in Florida that you can make a day trip out of and will keep you cool in the summer heat.

Where do Floridians go to escape the summer heat?

Of course, where you go to beat the heat depends on who you are and what you prefer. But many Floridians head for Florida’s freshwater springs when the ocean water starts getting warmer in the middle of the summer.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Here’s a list of 10 places where beating the Florida heat can be fun, from Northwest Florida, to the Southeast coast.

North and Central Florida:

  • Caverns State Park , near Tallahassee: There are tons of caves in Florida, but most of them are full of water, making them unenjoyable to explore for people who aren’t willing to don diving gear and get into some higher-level spelunking. Florida Caverns State Park is unique because its geographical positioning (an elevation of 180 feet) makes it possible for regular tourists — or Floridians looking to beat the heat — to enjoy a cave tour without taking a swim. There are very few state parks with dry caves in Florida and Florida Caverns State Park is the only one that offers cave tours to the public, according to Visit Florida .
  • Admission to Ichetucknee Springs is $6 for a vehicle of up to eight people, $4 for a single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle and $2 for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Admission to Ginnie Springs is $15-$20 for each adult ticket, depending on the time of year. Tickets for children ages 5 through 12 are $5 each and kids 4 and under get in free.
  • Admission to Devil’s Den requires an online reservation and costs $18 per person from Monday through Friday and $25 on weekends and holidays. You can bring your own snorkeling gear or rent some at Devil’s Den, but a mask, snorkel and fins are required to explore the spring.
  • It’s free to park and enter Dezerland. Each attraction is individually priced and prices for each activity range from around $15 to around $50.
  • Visiting the Kennedy Space Center for one day costs $75 for adults and kids ages 12 and up and $65 for kids ages 3 through 11.

Southeast and Southwest Florida:

  • Children under the age of 3 are not allowed to swim in the pool. Admission to the Venetian Pool is $22 for adults and kids ages 13 and older and is $17 for kids ages 3 through 12.
  • Visiting Weeki Wachee State Park is $13 for adults, $8 for kids ages 6 through 12. Kids ages 5 and under get free admission.
  • The price for admission to The Florida Aquarium can vary by a few dollars from day-to-day. It usually costs around $40 for adults and $35 for kids.

Enjoy one of Florida’s many waterparks! No matter where you live in Florida, there’s probably a waterpark close enough to you to spend the day. And you don’t have to spend as much as you would at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon or Universal’s Volcano Bay.

In Jacksonville, there’s Adventure Landing’s Shipwreck Island waterpark . Panama City Beach has a waterpark by the same name , complete with a fake wrecked ship in a pool that you can zipline into. Rapids Water Park in Riviera Beach is a 30-acre water park with more than 40 slides and attractions and the park just added a new slide this year, called “Mega Mayhem.” And Florida is welcoming its first Great Wolf Lodge in 2024 , which will bring a huge indoor waterpark to the Naples area.

Costco travel discounts and deals

The warehouse retailer's travel arm offers everyday savings on top-quality, brand-name vacations, hotels, cruises, and rental cars, exclusively for Costco members.

Teresita Nino has used Costco to book vacation packages and told ABC News how she saved on international deals.

"My last trip that we booked was to Saint Lucia and we ended up booking the airfare and the hotel -- I ended up saving about $700," Nino said of her experience using Costco. "Nine out of ten times is Costco Travel is always giving me a better deal overall than other travel companies."

Access to Costco's travel deals require a paid membership as an extra perk for customers.

"The travel savings are the cherry on top -- but it's not necessarily the most lucrative benefit," McGrath said. "In these membership programs, you have to take the value of membership as a whole rather than just joining to save on travel."

Planning on traveling for the Fourth of July holiday? Here’s how to avoid the rush

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the travel rush is already heating up.

Millions of Americans are preparing to get out of town sometime in the coming holiday week. That will likely mean busy roads, as well as packed airports and train stations.

Motor club AAA projects that some 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more from their homes over a nine-day Independence Day travel period — surpassing pre-pandemic numbers for the U.S. holiday. And the Transportation Security Administration expects to screen over 32 million individuals in airports from this Thursday through July 8, up 5.4% from last year’s numbers.

Are you traveling for the Fourth? Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

When is the best time to hit the road for July Fourth?

Smooth sailing for travel around any holiday is never a given. But avoiding the most hectic times, when others are rushing out of town, is a good way to start.

If you’re traveling by car for the Fourth of July, it’s best to hit the road in the morning, according to transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Peak traffic congestion varies by location, INRIX data published by AAA shows, but the worst times to drive on, or leading up to, the holiday are generally between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Either way, be prepared for the roads to be jammed.

Image

“Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a prepared statement.

July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, and many travelers will likely take Friday July 5th off to extend their trip into a four-day weekend. Drivers in large metro areas can expect the biggest delays on Wednesday July 3 and Sunday July 7 — as travelers leave and return to town, Pishue added.

And if you’re renting a car ahead of July Fourth, the busiest pickup days will be Friday, Saturday and Wednesday before the holiday, AAA notes.

When will airports be busiest?

Airports will also likely be packed all week long — but the TSA expects most people will take to the skies on Friday.

It anticipates that it will screen more than 3 million individuals Friday. That would surpass the agency’s current record for most people screened on a single day, which reached just under 3 million last Sunday.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, adding that travel typical peaks around Independence Day.

Last year, the busiest day for Fourth of July air travel was also the Friday ahead of the holiday, TSA data shows. If past trends hold, travel will likely be higher on the days before and after the Fourth — particularly closer to the weekend. In 2023, for example, more than 2 million people were screened on the Fourth, which landed on a Tuesday last year, down from 2.88 million the Friday before.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or canceled?

Flights can be delayed or canceled for an array of reasons — from plane-specific mechanical problems to major storms impacting popular travel paths.

If your flight is canceled, airlines are required to provide refunds for customers, even if the cancellation is due to weather . Delays are trickier, because they typically have to meet certain criteria for relief, such as refunds or compensation — but carriers will often give customers to chance to switch to alternative flights, if available, at no cost.

In April, the Biden administration issued final rules that include requiring airlines to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. Those rules are set to take effect over the next two years, but the Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the commitments each airline has made for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Always check your itinerary before leaving home

It’s better to be stuck at home than locked in hourslong traffic or stranded in an airport terminal. Before heading out the door this holiday week, do yourself a favor and check the status of your travel plans.

Was your flight, train or bus ride delayed? Are there are traffic incidents set to disrupt your drive? And what about the weather? A quick look through your itinerary — such as trip updates on a carrier’s website — checking weather forecasts and monitoring traffic safety through services like the 511 hotline or your phone’s navigation apps can go a long way toward avoiding travel misery.

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

— Leave early: There are more people everywhere during a holiday week, so lines will be longer and roads will be busier. Give yourself more time to get to your destination or to make your way through airport security.

— Keep an eye on the weather — and not just for your destination: Look at the weather for your entire travel path. Even if it’s sunny skies both at home and the place you’re headed, it’s important to keep an eye out for any storms in between. You may need to do some rerouting.

— Be kind: A trip delay or cancellation can be really frustrating — but if you’re running into disruptions, chances are others are too. Customer service agents have a lot on their plate at this time of year, and it’s important to be patient and respectful as they try to help you.
