Norwegian Jade complete cruise ship tour (video)

I really love #NorwegianJade. It is my favorite cruise ship. Every time I visit it, it shares something new and it never seems to show its age. Originally built as Pride of Hawaii and launched in 2006, it changed its name in 2008 when it was taken over by Norwegian Cruise Line. In the meantime, it has been refurbished several times – most recently in 2022 – so it has something for everyone, including children, whose delight made us choose it several times. The size is just right to walk in any direction, whether you go to a show or go to the pool, you won’t feel tired at the end of the day. And what strikes me every time is the way they treat you. The smaller the ship, the greater the attention to detail.

So, let me take you on a virtual tour of the entire ship, starting with deck 6, and then let me know what do you think about it. Would you choose it for a cruise instead of a new and very large one?

Norwegian Jade Itineraries

Norwegian jade review, review of norwegian jade.

The 2006-built Norwegian Jade cruise ship is the 2nd of NCL Jewel-class liners, with sisterships Norwegian Gem , Norwegian Jewel , Norwegian Pearl .

The vessel (IMO number 9304057) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308416000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary company of the shipping corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). NCL was founded in 1966, headquartered in Miami (Florida USA) and publicly traded (NASDAQ) company listed on NYSE ( NYC ). NCLH's major shareholders are the corporations Apollo Global Management (American), Genting Group (Malaysian) and TPG Capital (American). In 2017, the brand NCL had a worldwide cruise market share 8,7% (passengers) and 8,4% (revenue). NCLH (shipowner) owns the brands NCL , Oceania and RSSC-Regent .

NCL Jade cruise ship

The 2200-passenger ship Norwegian Jade has a similar exterior appearance to the Norwegian Star (operational since 2001) and the Norwegian Dawn (2002). However, the interior design and amenities are quite different and merit Norwegian Jade having a Jewel Class design. All dining and entertainment options are almost the same on all ship owned by NCL. The unique thing on Norwegian Jade is that the vessel is definitely international. There are people from different countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Mexico, Japan.

Decks and Cabins

Norwegian Jade staterooms (1201 total, in 36 grades) include 181x Suites, 360x Balcony, 243x Oceanview and 417 Inside cabins. Most staterooms are sized 140-160 ft2 (13-15 m2). The largest accommodations are the 3-Bedroom The Haven Garden Villa (2320 ft2 / 216 m2, with terrace sized 1035 ft2 / 96 m2).

The boat has 15 decks , of which 12 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

All meals are open seating and the choice of food is quite unrivaled, including from a steakhouse and Tepannyaki to French, Italian, tapas, sushi, buffets and even a 24-hour cafe, complete with English breakfast. Alizar and Grand Pacific are Norwegian Jade's main dining rooms. Open seating breakfast and lunch are provided in one of the two, both are open for dinner, and walk-ins are welcome in the evening. An electronic system onboard Norwegian Jade cuts down on wait times and lines in the restaurants. Monitors throughout the corridors reveal how busy the eateries are, with a bar ranging from green (come on in) to red (crowded). This screen acts as an electronic hostess and lets guests know how long the wait is for a table for four, for example, and where parties are being accepted.

The entertainment options range from the standard song and dance review or cabaret to the more offbeat sing-along. There is a nightly variable 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. show, with one comedy or variety act and one standard Vegas or Broadway revue. One of the most exciting experiences is the crew variety show, always held on the final evening. High atop the ship is the secondary showroom, Jade's Spinnaker Lounge. It serves different purposes during the day. In the afternoon, passenger participation games take place. At night, The Second City troupe features a mixture of comedy, lounge music, and cabaret. The ship also has 7 jacuzzis and 3 pools (Sapphire Kid’s Pool). Entertainment options also include the NCL's FIREWORKS show (on each voyage), "Rock of Ages", "Cirque Dreams", "Illusionarium" (magicians show).

Itineraries

Norwegian Jade itinerary program is based on Mediterranean cruises from Civitavecchia-Rome and Venice to Turkey, Greece and the Greek Isles, and also to ports on the French and Italian Riviera coasts in the Western Mediterranean.

In 2017, for the first time ever, NCL homeported a ship (Jade) in Hamburg Germany . The itineraries were 6- and 8-night Western Europe, 8- and 9-night Norwegian Fjords, 11-night Norway and North Cape , and one 13-night Norway, Iceland and UK. Alternatively, roundtrip departures were offered from Amsterdam Holland and Southampton England .

In summer 2018, the ship had scheduled Norway, Iceland and North Cape cruises from Southampton and Hamburg. In 2018-2019, the ship offered Southern Caribbean itineraries from homeport Miami (Florida USA) - 11-day and 14-day roundtrip Panama Canal cruises from Tampa and Miami.

Following the Coronavirus crisis, in early-April 2021, NCL announced new schedules for the ships Jade (7-day Mediterranean-Greek Islands from Piraeus-Athens /starting July 25), Joy (7-day Caribbean from Montego Bay Jamaica /starting August 15) and Gem (7-day Caribbean from La Romana Dominican Republic /starting August 15). Previously, the boats were planned to restart as follows - Joy (October 19, 2021/Caribbean from Miami ), Gem (Oct 29, 2021/Bermuda from NYC ), Jade (January 2, 2022/South Africa from Cape Town).

The ship's winter 2021-2022 program (December thru February) was canceled. It featured NCL's first roundtrips from Cape Town South Africa . A 12-day "Extraordinary Journeys" included visits to Namibia ( Luderitz , Walvis Bay ) and Durban , with overnights in Richards Bay and Cape Town. NCL Jade restarted operations on March 3, 2022, in the Mediterranean.

Norwegian Jade Wiki

Between 2006 and 2008, this vessel served in the NCL America company’s fleet under the name "Pride of Hawaii". In NCL America's fleet, it had as a fleet mate the sistership Pride of Aloha (now Norwegian Sky).

The NCL Jade ship was christened on May 22, 2006, in a ceremony at San Pedro Pier in LA, California. The selection of Senator Inouye as "Godfather" of NCL Pride of Hawaii, was an innovative step by Norwegian since this role is traditionally played by women.

JADE is of the Jewel-class Norwegian vessels. Her sisters in the fleet are the NCL ships Gem , Jewel and Pearl . The initial intent was JADE to have a design similar to that of Pride of America but later was decided to be enlarged (NCL Jewel-design).

In 2007 the NCL company announced they will permanently relocate the vessel from Hawaii due to substantial revenue losses. In early 2008 NCLH deployed the ship in Europe. Its last Honolulu departure was on Feb 4, 2008. The vessel went to dry-dock for some changes (new livery, casino, new name) to become "Norwegian Jade". However, she still keeps her Hawaii-themed interior decor (many flowers and landscapes throughout onboard venues and public spaces).

JADE's Inaugural Cruise (Maiden Voyage) was on February 16, 2008 ( Panama Canal from Los Angeles to Miami ). The ship's first Captain was Frank Juliussen.

NCL Jade refurbishment 2017 review

Ship's 2017 drydock (March 7 - April 3) was in Freeport Bahamas and resulted in the following deckplan changes:

Atrium's décor was changed. The old chandelier was replaced with a new one.

Over 2250 new artworks were installed throughout the ship (including in all cabins).

All staterooms were updated and upgraded with new furniture, carpeting, flat TVs, bed headboards (with USB outlets for device charging).

The Haven suite complex' Haven Courtyard was refurbished (new finishes on outdoor deck areas, swimming pool, hot tubs). New deck furniture and cabanas were added.

Main pool deck areas were also updated.

Spinnaker Lounge (deck 13) was upgraded, as well as the Fitness Centre (deck 12, new TechnoGym equipment).

The Haven suites and villas were all renovated with new furniture, finishes, wallpapers, carpeting, drapery, artworks.

2 new restaurants were added - O’Sheehan's Bar and Grill, Sugarcane Mojito Bar, The Cellars (Mondavi Family Wine Bar), Los Lobos Cantina (Mexican restaurant), The Pit Stop (poolside grill, deck 13).

Moderno Churrascaria (Brazilian steakhouse restaurant) was moved from deck 8 to deck 13. The restaurant was redesigned and outfitted with floor-ceiling windows and glass-door entrance.

Bliss Ultra Lounge (nightclub) was added on deck 7.

All other onboard eateries were updated (new carpeting, artworks, upholstery, window treatments), including La Cucina (Italian restaurant, deck 12), Cagney’s Steakhouse (deck 13), Teppanyaki Room (deck 7), Jasmine Garden (deck 7), Garden Cafe (deck 12). Cagney’s Steakhouse now has additional seating and a new virtual fireplace. La Cucina has a new wine wall.

During drydock 2017, NCL Jade was retrofitted with new "scrubbers" (exhaust gas cleaning systems). The new scrubber technology reduces the equivalent of approx 1500 tons of the poisonous gas Sulfur Oxide. NCL was the first cruise company to retrofit with a scrubber hybrid system vessels while in service. The new in-line scrubbers (5 units) are lightweight and able to operate in a dry mode, as well as in open and closed loops.

Drydock 2017 was part of NCL's "Norwegian Edge" program for fleetwide upgrades (2-year project budgeted USD 400 million). Each drydock costs around USD 35-40 million.

NCL Jade refurbishment 2011 review

The list of deck plan changes after the ship's 2011 drydock refurbishment includes:

  • (Deck 8) the new "Moderno" restaurant replaced the old “Paniolo’s”.
  • Stardust Theater was renovated and technically updated and enhanced.
  • All passenger and crew cabins were upgraded with new flat TVs. Wheelchair-accessible rooms were also updated.
  • The onboard Wi-Fi coverage was upgraded to shipwide.
  • A new aerobics room was added in the Spa-Gym complex.
  • Among the other renovations are new carpeting and tiling, silk plants.

NCL Jade Obstructed Ocean View advice

I have searched for recommendations on the obstructed ocean view cabins on deck 8,  but I’m struggling to sort out the information. I believe some windows have now been completely obscured.

Obviously not all the cabins will be available, and I will avoid the ones over the lounge/nightclub. Any advice on best obstructed view cabins for location and view would be very much appreciated

Hi Notts, Our first NCL cruise was on the Gem in 2009. We were on deck 8 in an inside but we had occasion to peak into the obstructed OV cabins across the corridor from us. We have since sailed on sister ships Jade and Pearl and we really like this class of ship.

I am sure you are aware that the obstruction is the life boat that will be directly outside your window. I am at a loss to understand what you mean by "I believe some windows have been completely obscured". I am ignorant of any changes in this regard.

My suggestion is to try to book one of the sideways cabins near the midship stairwell. I believe they are numbered 8090,8092,8094, 8590,8592,8594. The nice thing about these cabins is that you will have two windows instead of just one providing more light and possibly more view angled between lifeboats. This is also a very convenient location, close to stairs and elevators midship.

We were on the Jade in cabin 8086 which had two windows and was situated between life boats so it wasn’t totally obstructed. It was a great cabin!

B1E200A0-86A6-47D8-8A5A-ED96A84D6537.jpeg

As a general rule, we prefer port side for obstructed oceanviews on the Dawn/Jewel/Gem class ships (haven't been on the Pearl) if booking one - there is one sideway cabin toward the front of the ship, which seemed to be above the Bliss Lounge (although, music & party usually quiet down after 11 pm or midnight, not an issue unless you go to sleep early ...)

Otherwise, I recommend 8566/8066, 8568/8068 and the cluster like 8574/8576/8578 or 8074/8076/8078 as those are in the middle of that quiet corridor, with inside cabins across the hallway - don't worry about the "big" white space, those are storage/hotel & housekeeping service closets where items are kept by the room stewards.

If noise is a concern, I would avoid the last 3 sideway cabins nearest to the midship elevators, as noises from O'Sheehans (whatever it's being called these days) and the Atrium lobby below will bounce & "travel" up and you will possibly hear that ... again, typically till 11 pm to no later than midnight (the final evening prior to disembarkation the next morning is often a bit "busy")

Starboard side is best for people watching during embarkation, port stops & tendering (for late-returning pier runners) whereas, for tender ports on some itineraries, some of the ship's own lifeboats are lowered & launched for use, including crew-only safety drills & exercises (not always) - and for those few lucky hours, you get a fully unobstructed oceanview toward the horizon.

Lastly, the first 2 or 3 pairs of obstructed OV in the front (assuming that they aren't shaded/tinted out) will be less obstructed on the upper window, as it is where the smaller, fast rescue boats are situated vs. the "regular" & larger lifeboats.

don't-use-real-name

don't-use-real-name

One B-I-G distraction with the OBV cabins is when deploying the life boats

IS THE NOISE

This happens at ports where the life boats are used as tenders

The boats are hoisted out and away from their concealed davits

and lower to the ocean surface - a whole lot of groaning creaking

a symphony of kaledioscope of musical machinery needing oiling.

AND then too when hoisting them back into place.

The crew when deploying the boats can look into the OBV cabins

and guests on the Promenade deck 7 can look up into the cabins

with the life boats now removed.

Other than that dealing with the passageway maze forward and aft

of O'Sheehans deck 8 midship it is just a cabin with a degree of

more daylight than an Inside cabin.

We had cabin 8594 on the Jade for a British Island Cruise. It was our first cruise in a outside inside cabin. We always get a balcony. I loved the cabin! It was close to everything! The obstruction wasn't that bad and we had a view of the gangway. It depends on where you're cruising to, also, but as far as location it was the best! Go to youtube  and you could get a good idea.

Thank you for your great advice.

I read somewhere that someone’s cabin had something coated over the glass so they couldn’t see out of the glass at all, but I can’t find the comment now, and can’t remember the cabin number. I was flicking around haphazardly at the time, unfortunately.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and giving information and great advice 😊

We were on the Gem in sideways cabin 8566.  The room felt so much bigger because the window was on the side of the bed instead of in the back.  When we first got on there was no lifeboat by the window and we were elated.  But sometime during the cruise they put a lifeboat in that space.  It still wasn't so bad because we were still able to look through the lifeboat's opening into the water.

lambs2

We have sailed the Jade twice. First time in 2009 on a 21 day B2B in port side obstructed view cabin 8064.  Loved that cabin and we had a decent view from a place on the right side of window. I remember being able to see the ports each day if we were facing them and we were port in more than half the time. The view of Malta was particularly memorable. We had always sailed in inside cabins on previous sailings so this was a real treat for us.

In November 2019 we sailed the Jade again. That time, our last cruise until - hopefully - this November, in a 9th floor balcony cabin, again a 21 day sailing.  Love the Jade!

We've had deck 8 obstructed view staterooms on several cruises on the Jade and the Star.  The location is our favorite, mid-ship, quick to get to O'Sheehans for breakfast or a drink.  If a balcony is out of our price range on a particular sailing, we'd nearly always chose this location.  For us the window is more about natural light than about sitting and looking out and these staterooms tic that box for us.

Several years ago we had cabin 8060 on the Jade. We loved the location but would not book that cabin again. The only way you could see over the lifeboat was by standing on the bed and could then only see a glimpse of the sea.

On 5/6/2021 at 8:50 PM, Notts1964 said: Hi I have searched for recommendations on the obstructed ocean view cabins on deck 8,  but I’m struggling to sort out the information. I believe some windows have now been completely obscured. Obviously not all the cabins will be available, and I will avoid the ones over the lounge/nightclub. Any advice on best obstructed view cabins for location and view would be very much appreciated

My personal experience (at least for the Jade) is that the location of the various obstructed ocean view cabins on deck 8 is very similar to what you can see on the deck plan regarding lifeboats and where the various cabins are situated. 3 times on the Jade we have had one of the obstructed OV type cabins on deck 8, and before contacting my PCC to make a reservation, I just do a "mock" booking to see which OV cabins that are available to choose from. I then chose on all three occasions a cabin (different cabin number each time) that seemed to be situated more or less "between" two lifeboats instead of "behind" one, and that has turned out to be the case on board as well. Not as obstructed view as many of the other OV cabins on the Jade.

I sailed in 8066 on Jewel once (Jade's sister.)  The sideways cabins do feel roomier with the bed against the wall rather than under the window.  Be aware that you can awaken from a nice afternoon nap & be startled by a worker doing maintenance on the lifeboat right outside your window  😲

I believe at one point either the Jewel or the Pearl had a coating applied to the windows of the obstructed view rooms that made them look frosted, but it was only the one ship and never extended to the others in the fleet.  I do not know if the coating was later removed or not.

We have been in 8094 twice - on the Jade and again on the Jewel. We loved that cabin - so handy and convenient for us Oldies! No noise whatsoever. Yes it's close to O'Sheehan/The Local but the bar is further away from the entrance.

We were in 8094 for 19 days on the Singapore-Sydney cruise and we didn't miss the balcony at all. We were able to see the water and sky though - they told us what kind of weather ... go to the pool deck or not.

Photos of 8094 on the Jewel. Post-2018-dry-dock. First ones upon embarkation and latter ones during the cruise. Separating the beds sure gave us space!

DSC08652.JPG

We're fans of this kind of cabin (sideways close to elevators on deck 8 on the Jewel class ships - will book again. For longer cruises with many sea days (like TAs) we go for balcony or mini-suites.

Ocean view cabins are the way to go when you're on budget and/or the itinerary is a port intensive one.

I am actually in this very cabin in May, do you have any other pictures of the room?

These were from our 2019 Cruise. We are sailing on her again in April. 😀

How was the location of the room?

We once had cabin 8060 on the Jade. Having light in the cabin was a plus but the only way to get a glimpse of the ocean was to stand on the bed.

The 9 best Bahamas cruises for every type of traveler

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with the latest information.

The best Bahamas cru ises take you away from the daily grind, transporting you to theme park-like private islands and beach-lined paradises. Cruise choices include new and jazzed-up ships sailing an array of short and weeklong Bahamas itineraries. Cruising to the Bahamas is so easy you may even be able to go without a passport .

Family-friendly lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line, offer cruises focused on the Bahamas all year. So do newcomers Virgin Voyages, with its adults-only sailings, and Margaritaville at Sea, offering short two-night hops and longer cruise-and-stay packages. The winter and early spring seasons bring a handful of itineraries on premium lines like Celebrity Cruises and Holland America.

The only cruise lines that don’t regularly offer Bahamas cruises are the luxury lines. But don’t worry, luxe lovers: Many of the ships we included on our list of the best Bahamas cruises offer suites that come with concierge services, private enclaves or special spa privileges. If a luxury cruise to the Bahamas is your goal, look at the top suite options on a mainstream or premium line.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Whether you’re looking for a quick and cheap getaway or a week at the beach, here are the best Bahamas cruise itineraries to start your search, in order from shortest to longest.

2-night cruises on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise from Palm Beach, Florida

Though cruising is relatively new to the Margaritaville travel and hospitality franchise, cruise line Margaritaville at Sea is essentially a rebranding of the old Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. Its refurbished ship, Paradise, originally debuted in the 1990s for Costa Cruises.

One Jimmy Buffett-themed makeover later, the ship is a perfect fit for the laid-back vibe of the Bahamas. Grab a drink or a bite to eat from the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, try your luck at the Par-A-Dice Casino and enjoy plenty of entertainment, including the musical production, “Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy’s Ship Show.” There’s a kids club, a teen club, a spa and two pools stocked with beach balls and inflatable parrots.

The two-night cruise itinerary includes one day in Freeport, where you can shop, hit the casino, enjoy water sports or chill on the beach. The ship offers shore excursions, or you can explore independently. Margaritaville at Sea also offers cruise-and-stay itineraries of either four or six nights (including the two nights onboard the ship). These packages let you choose between two partner hotels in Freeport, where you’ll stay two or four nights on land, then hop back on the ship for your return night at sea.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise carries around 1,300 passengers in an assortment of inside and ocean-view cabins, all around 176 square feet, which is larger than the average for those categories on most mainstream ships. Ten suites with balconies are also available, with 524 square feet of space.

Who should go? Obviously, Parrotheads are gonna want to try this ship, with all its Jimmy Buffett-inspired themes and decor, but it’s also a good trial run for anyone on the fence about cruising. Pricing makes this a great cruise to enjoy an escape without spending a fortune. We found weekday sailings that begin at $99 per person based on double occupancy for an inside cabin.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas from Miami

This itinerary may be the best overall short Bahamas cruise. Both the three- and four-night cruises have stops at Nassau and Royal Caribbean ‘s massive private island — Perfect Day at CocoCay . Those two stops combined give cruisers the opportunity to enjoy water sports, spend some time at the beach and experience a bit of Bahamian culture.

Freedom of the Seas has plenty of onboard fun to occupy travelers of all ages on sea days. It’s loaded with top-deck slides and water features, specialty restaurant choices and more entertainment options than you can take in on a short cruise. Carrying around 4,000 cruise guests, Freedom of the Seas is big enough to impress without being overwhelming.

Plus, logistics for cruising out of Miami are simple enough for even first-time cruisers. From flight choices to pre- or post-cruise hotels, it’s a city that caters to tourists, especially the cruising ones.

Who should go? From first-timers to veteran cruisers, anyone looking for a short but fun-filled hop to the Bahamas should give Freedom of the Seas a look. Families looking for a quick escape will find entertainment and activities for toddlers to teens. The ship is also ideal for family reunions, bachelorette parties and birthday cruises. Couples will love the adults-only Solarium with its extra-large hot tubs looking out over the sea.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas from Port Canaveral, Florida

When Royal Caribbean’ s giant Utopia of the Seas debuts in July 2024, it will offer a bevy of short sailings, including three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida. The 236,860-ton, 5,669-passenger vessel will be the second-largest cruise ship in the world and offer more exciting amenities than any other cruise ship sailing short itineraries in North America.

Why? The newest, biggest ships in the world typically sail longer cruises. Offering short cruises on its humongous Oasis Class ships is new for Royal Caribbean; sister ship Allure of the Seas will test out the concept before Utopia launches.

Families with kids will definitely go bananas over the choices on board the new ship. The top deck alone will feature three separate pool areas, a surfing simulator, a kiddie splash zone, a basketball court, two rock walls, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The ship will also boast an extensive selection of restaurants, bars, lounges and shops. Additionally, there will be an indoor skating rink, a spa and a showroom with Broadway-style shows.

Utopia of the Seas’ inaugural voyage is set for July 22, 2024, and will be a four-night cruise to Nassau and the line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. The second sailing will be a three-night cruise to the Bahamas that departs on July 26, 2024.

Who should go?  Short sailings on this new ship will appeal to all sorts of cruisers. Historically, new ships are reserved for longer itineraries, so this is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a snack-size sampling of a brand-new ship without spending the money on a longer sailing.

Families craving a quick getaway where the entire brood is satisfied will not be disappointed. In addition to seemingly endless kid-friendly amenities and top-notch children’s programming, Utopia of the Seas will feature a casino and adults-only spaces.

3- or 4-night cruises on Disney Wish from Port Canaveral, Florida

Disney waited a decade to build its next new ship, but Disney dreamers had their wish granted in 2022. Even better, the new Disney Wish cruises to the Bahamas. Designed to be the perfect complement to a visit to Orlando’s Disney theme parks, these short cruises visit Nassau and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The four-night itinerary adds a sea day to enjoy the ship.

Disney Wish is designed to immerse cruisers in the various Disney worlds through technology. An onboard augmented reality game turns the Disney Cruise Line Navigator smartphone app into a virtual spyglass that lets cruisers participate in a fantasy adventure with Disney and Pixar characters. The AquaMouse waterslide combines a splashy tube ride in a two-seater raft with a pre-adventure tale told through screens at the beginning of the ride. Diners at the Worlds of Marvel restaurant take part in an interactive Avengers-themed experience through videos and special effects.

Wish carries 4,000 passengers in cabins and suites designed to simplify cruising with kids. But never fear, adult Disney fans; you’ll also find your spot on board. From the “Star Wars”-themed Hyperspace Lounge to the Quiet Cove adults-only sun deck, Disney manages to cater to grownups as well as kids.

Who should go ? This is obviously the best Bahamas cruise for lovers of all things Disney, including “Star Wars” and Marvel fans.

3- or 4-night cruises on Celebrity Reflection from Fort Lauderdale

Beginning in April 2024, Celebrity Cruises will sail three- and four-night voyages round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, year-round.

The 3,046-passenger Celebrity Reflection will offer a consistent rotation of three-night weekend cruises (departing each Friday and returning each Monday morning) and four-night weekday sailings (departing each Monday and returning each Friday morning).

Itineraries will include stops at Key West in Florida and Nassau and Bimini in the Bahamas.

Celebrity appeals mostly to the 40-plus set sans small children. It’s light on the kid-centric attractions (such as waterslides, go-karts and laser tag) that other big-ship lines include. The line offers instead lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas. (If you do have kids in tow, you can take advantage of the extensive children’s program, Camp at Sea. It provides supervised activities daily for children ages 3-12 in dedicated spaces.)

Celebrity Reflection is the line’s last and largest Solstice Class cruise ship. The Solstice C lass ships feature some of the most stylish outdoor pool decks at sea, with indoor, adults-only pool areas that, notably, are topped with glass panels embedded with solar panels that contribute to the ship’s power grid. You’ll also find large spas, casinos, showrooms and a nice selection of restaurants on board.

This ship also boasts one of the most spectacular suites in the cruising world — the 1,646-square-foot Reflection Suite. It was the first two-bedroom suite on a Celebrity Cruises vessel.

Who should go? This an ideal cruise for older travelers who are new to cruising and want to sample one or frequent cruisers who might prefer a shorter time at sea. Although Celebrity doesn’t draw many families with young children, the shorter Bahamas itineraries are also perfect for multigenerational family groups seeking an affordable cruise that appeals to all ages.

4-night cruises on Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady from Miami

Virgin Voyages aimed to be a disrupter in the cruise market from the beginning — creating a product designed to please even those who claim they would never set foot on a cruise ship. Yet the itinerary for this four-night Bahamas cruise on Scarlet Lady is fairly ordinary. Ports of call include Key West and a private beach club on the Bahamian island of Bimini.

It’s the ship itself that sets this cruise apart from the pack. You’ll find unique cabins (with balcony hammocks), brash red livery and one-of-a-kind onboard activities, such as tattoo parlors, drag shows and ‘80s-themed fitness classes, to keep its 2,700 sailors (as Virgin calls its passengers) entertained.

Who should go ? This is the best Bahamas cruise for the non-cruiser who is either young at heart or young and eager to party aboard this glitzy ship. If you’re easily offended by loud music, round-the-clock partying or sexual innuendo, this is not your Bahamas cruise.

4-day cruises on Norwegian Jade from Miami

Norwegian Cruise Line offers four-day sailings from Miami aboard Norwegian Jade. Ports of call include Key West and Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island.

Port diversions consist of touring the Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum and the Key West Aquarium, shopping along Nassau’s Bay Street and exploring the white-sand beaches and pristine waters on Great Stirrup Cay.

The 2,402-passenger vessel is part of the line’s Jewel class of ships. Though the ship launched in 2006, it received a substantial refurbishment in 2017 that included a cabin remodel, new and expanded dining and a design overhaul.

Norwegian Jewel might not have the extensive top-deck attractions of newer ships, like Norwegian Prima, or as many restaurants and bars. However, passengers will find plenty to occupy their time onboard with scheduled activities, a casino, spa and pool areas.

Who should go? Families, couples and friend groups will appreciate the unstructured nature of a Norwegian cruise. The line’s “freestyle cruising” mantra — cruising without rigid dining schedules, dress codes and formal nights — is perfectly suited for short sailings. With a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times, passengers have lots of flexibility for their limited time at sea.

Related: Best time to cruise to the Bahamas

5-night cruises on Carnival Sunshine from South Carolina

I am a huge lover of five-night sailings. They are long enough to scratch the cruise itch and short enough to account for travel time to and from the port without adding any extra vacation days. Plus, the slightly longer itineraries are less popular with hard partiers who can be disruptive on shorter Bahamas cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line offers 10 different five-night sailings from Charleston, South Carolina, aboard the 3,002-passenger Carnival Sunshine. It’s currently Carnival’s oldest ship (it debuted in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny). However, in 2013, the line gave it a $200 million bow-to-stern glow-up and renamed it Carnival Sunshine. The overhaul produced a new top-deck WaterWorks water park, a comedy club and several bars, lounges and restaurants.

Depending on which itinerary you choose, you can chill out on the beaches of Bimini, shop Nassau’s iconic straw market or go horseback riding by the shore of Carnival’s private island, Half Moon Cay. Consider a pre- or post-cruise stay in Charleston to take in the city’s historic landmarks, epic dining and charming cobblestone streets.

Who should go? These cruises are the best Bahamas sailings for those who prefer the intimacy of an older ship and don’t care about flashy amenities and onboard attractions on newer vessels. Plus, they’re ideal for travelers who live north of Florida and are looking for a more convenient drive-to departure port.

8-night cruises on Carnival Venezia from New York City

The 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia is a bit of an outlier in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet. Originally built for Italy-based Costa Cruises and launched in 2019, it joined the Carnival family in May 2023. (Carnival Corporation is the parent company of both Costa and Carnival.)

The ship was renovated to add many of Carnival’s signature venues. However, many of its Costa-aligned, Italian-themed designs remain, including a real gondola “sailing” down the middle of its main dining room and a pool deck built to look like a Venetian boulevard.

Guests might feel like they’ve been whisked away to Italy thanks to regional touches like the handmade Italian gelato at JavaBlue Cafe and the Italian liqueur-infused concoctions found at many bars.

Two eight-night voyages out of New York City include stops at Freeport, Nassau and Half Moon Cay.

Who should go? This Bahamas cruise is ideal for anyone looking for a different Carnival experience during a weeklong cruise. It’s almost like traveling to Italy and the Bahamas in one trip.

Bottom line

The best Bahamas cruises offer something cruisers can’t quite get enough of — whether it’s beach time or party time. While short sailings are still the most popular Bahamas itineraries, you can find options for almost every cruising style. The key is identifying the cruise that fits your style, preferred activities and vacation budget.
