things to do in upstate new york

Ahh, Upstate New York. One of America’s most hidden gems. Most people, when they think of New York, they immediately assume New York City. But did you know that NYC is less than 1% of the landmass of New York State? There are endless things to do in Upstate New York, too! From cute small towns to breathtaking waterfalls to fun young cities. Here are our favorite Upstate New York hidden gems!

Fun Fact: The dictionary defines “Upstate” as whatever is north of you. Since most of New York State’s population lives in the NYC region, we’ll define Upstate New York relative to NYC. AKA: Everything north of NYC. From the Adirondacks to Buffalo to the Catskills. Don’t fight us on this one. In addition to the dictionary, even Wikipedia agrees with this definition !

Hiking & Farm Experience with Llamas/Alpacas

new york upstate places to visit

If you love a hands-on experience with animals, this is the perfect activity! Llamas and alpacas are soft and cuddly creatures with an exciting history. From homestead owner and educator Andrea , you can learn all about camelids (the biological family containing alpaca and llama members) while getting up close and personal.

Walk through magnificent pastures and fields, strolling alongside llamas and alpacas with a large or private group. Don’t forget to take a llama selfie with the countryside backdrop!

Farm Animal Cuddles

A piglet being cuddled by a woman

There are a ton of farm animal sanctuaries and small farms in Upstate New York. I would recommend avoiding sanctuaries that house wild and exotic animals without researching beforehand; look into how they procured the animals, the history of the establishment, whether they breed these animals, etc.

On the other hand, farm animal sanctuaries are generally small farms that have saved or purchased animals to keep them away from slaughterhouses or similar fates. These farms may breed and raise animals themselves, but their goal is to keep these creatures happy and safe. Animals housed here are generally comfortable interacting with humans, especially children, individuals with autism, or people who suffer from anxiety. Cuddling up with a pig or goat can really brighten your day–except when a goat is in a mood and turns mean!

Cool Off in a Swimming Hole

People swimming at Peekamoose Blue Hole

Lakes scattered across the Catskill Mountains are perfect places to rent a cabin for the weekend. There are tons of swimming holes and hikes in the region, perfect for cooling off in on a hot summer day. With swimming holes growing in popularity, keep in mind that they may get crowded. Peekamoose Blue Hole is the most well-known, making it one of the most sought-after spots for many travelers.

You can visit a few lesser-known swimming holes if you want to avoid crowds. Diamond Notch Falls lies at the end of several different hiking trails. Kaaterskill Falls is another great swimming spot requiring a steep hike, with a swimming hole below the waterfall; avoid this spot on the weekends to miss the crowds.

Otter Falls is another great swimming hole located at the basin of 30-foot cascading falls. In the wet months, the pool is 6 to 8 feet deep. The dry months leave a shallow pool that is still perfect for cooling off in after a hike.

Visit the Town of Woodstock

new york upstate places to visit

It may surprise you to know that Woodstock, NY was not the site of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. This famous spectacle actually occurred in Bethel, NY, 60 miles southwest. If you’re looking to attend a show on these infamous grounds, performances at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts are still running strong!

Aside from this misconception, Woodstock is still an amazing town worth visiting. The local shops, eateries, and cafes exude the same ideology and allure behind the draw of the Woodstock Music Festival. There are amazing boutiques on Main Street where you can support local artisans and artists of the Catskills.

Tour Option: There is a Woodstock Rock n’ Roll Tour if you’re into music history!

Rail Explorers Railroad Tours

rail explorers phoenicia ny

See the natural sights of Phoenicia, NY, with this unique railroad tour! Rail Explorers set you up on the tracks with an electric pedal-powered rail bike. Tours are offered at all hours (day or night), but I recommend a daytime tour to catch the views–unless it’s Halloween!

This experience is accessible to all and requires light exercise, which is perfect for doing with friends or family. While you may not get tired, paying attention on the tracks so as not to bump into the person in front or back of you is important.

I recommend booking the Golden Hour tour in the fall. Before your ride, hit the iconic Phoenicia Diner in town. Staying overnight? Hotel Mountain Brook in Kingston is a cute and cozy place to stay.

The Finger Lakes, NY

If you couldn’t tell by now, we LOVE the Finger Lakes region. This region has so many cute places to stay and even more things to keep you busy.

Explore Harriet Tubman’s Home

Harriet Tubman’s Home in Upstate New York

Step into the prior home of Harriet Tubman in Auburn, New York. This residence is where she spent the latter part of her life, and it’s now a United States National Park . Tours of the home are offered twice a day, and you must reserve a spot in advance. Harriet Tubman was one of American history’s most inspirational abolitionists, political activists, and female military leaders. Learning about her in her former home is quite the experience.

As of March 2022, tours inside the property were prohibited, and only outdoor tours were available. Call to check before making your tour reservation to confirm.

Join a Finger Lakes Wine Tasting Tour

A glass of wine being held with a vineyard in the Finger Lakes, Upstate New York in the background

The Finger Lakes tasting is fantastic, with three popular trails to choose from: Cayuga Wine Trail, Seneca Lake Wine Trail, and Keuka Wine Trail. There are over a hundred wineries across the region between these three trails, with endless samples of local creations. You can visit each location on your own (with a safe ride, of course, or by booking private transportation) or book a Finger Lakes wine tour.

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is one of our favorite wineries in the Finger Lakes, especially if you love sipping Rieslings. Rieslings rule the Finger Lakes region, so if you are a white wine drinker, this is where you want to be.

Go Kayaking or Boating on a Finger Lake

A boat on a lake in the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes is a kayaking paradise. You can kayak and boat most everywhere, with the most popular spots being Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake, and Canandaigua Lake. Boating is so popular in the region that most vacation homes will actually store kayaks for their guests to use on their trips. If that’s not the case, you can easily rent one at several local agencies .

If you own your kayak, you just have to get it out on the water! Ten launch sites are available across several lakes for visitors to use. For a full boat launch list , check with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation for details.

You can also book a boat tour with local operators who can often combine boat tours with winery visits and other fun activities. Ending your kayak or boat trip with a bottle of local Finger Lakes wine is the cherry on top of a fantastic day.

Dine at FLX Table in Geneva

New York City is not the only stellar food scene in the state. Foodies love the Finger Lakes for it’s amazing dining opportunities and unique cuisine. F.L.X. Table in Geneva is a small eatery with only 14 seats offering a 4-course, pre-set meal for dinner from Thursday to Monday. You get to share the space with the chefs crafting your meal in an intimate and charming atmosphere that connects everyone in the room. It feels like a personal dinner party!

I love that the prix fixe menu constantly changes, bringing fresh meal options to fit the season. Past favorites include dishes like Chicken Royal served with quinoa and burgundy truffle. Reservations can be tough at F.L.X., but there are other options to taste this cuisine through F.L.X. Bird for delicious fried chicken.

Horseback Riding Tours in Burdett

new york upstate places to visit

We love Watkins Glen State Park –its natural beauty is unparallel to any park you’ll find in most of the state.  Horseback riding allows you to explore the park from a unique vantage point, with tours available through Painted Bar Stables . Stroll by on horseback some of the best waterfalls in New York State! It won’t take long to see why this region is known for its natural wonders and great wine.

Horseback riding may be intimidating for some, but not to worry. Guided tours include expert riders who will help you along on your journey. Listen up because they’ll also share some pretty cool facts about the Finger Lakes area.

Hike to Amazing Finger Lakes Waterfalls

A woman at Buttermilk Falls State Park

Hiking in the Finger Lakes is epic, with so many state parks, outdoor areas, and a national forest to explore.  To find hiking options near you, check with the closest state park to where you’re staying for assistance. Hikes across this region will range in difficulty, so you want to ensure you find one to suit your ability.

Buttermilk Falls State Park is one of our favorites, with stunning waterfalls and gorges. We also recommend checking out Finger Lakes National Forest . This gem has 30 miles of trails scattered through lush woods and serene pastures that sometimes have cattle grazing depending on the season.

Shop at the Ithaca Farmers Market

A woman shopping at Ithaca Farmers Market in Upstate New York things to do

Tucked away on the shores of Lake Cayuga is the friendly young college town of Ithaca. We love this area, especially the Ithaca Farmers Market , which has been operating since 1973! You can peruse more than 130 vendors at the market selling produce and handmade goodies. If you’re looking to hike or horseback ride in the Finger Lakes, this is a great place to stop and grab some snacks for your trip. This is one of my favorite towns in the Finger Lakes !

During the summer months, the market is spread across a park on the Cayuga Lake waterfront with spectacular views to pair with your local finds. The market is set up in the winter months at the Triphammer Marketplace to allow growers a full year to sell. Check the website for changes.

Explore Corning’s Museum of Glass

Glasses at Corning's Museum of Glass

Corning may be a small city, but it has one of the world’s largest spaces dedicated to the art of contemporary glass making and design! The more museums I’ve visited in my travels, the more they feel the same–a little dark, full of paintings in ornate frames, room after room of an older grand old building once some famous or rich’s person’s home.  But the Museum of Glass in Corning truly blew me away.

This attraction allows you to get up close to the glass-blowing process, watching artists create before your eyes. You can even learn to make glass yourself by signing up for a short class ! Everyone in your group will enjoy the interactive galleries and exhibits teaching you about the history of glassmaking and the secrets behind this stunning art technique.

Ride on a Hot Air Balloon Over Letchworth State Park

A waterfall at Letchworth State Park with a hot air balloon flying over it

Letchworth State Park has some of the most gorgeous waterfalls in the entire country–there’s a reason it’s nicknamed “the Grand Canyon of the East!” One of the most amazing ways to experience the full beauty of this park is on a hot air balloon ride, soaring above the breathtaking views. Don’t like heights? You can hike and walk instead!

THE Adirondacks REGION

We ADORE the Adirondack Park. Between all the cute towns in the Adirondacks to visit year-round and the host of hidden gems in Upstate New York, you’ll quickly fall in love with this region too.

Lake Gorge Ice Castles and Caves

ice castles lake george

The Ice Castles and Caves in Lake George are an award-winning attraction every ice and snow lover has to experience. Kids and adults alike love to explore the ice mazes, slides, tunnels, fountains, and more. As the season continues, more is added to the Ice Castles, so you’re never visiting the same place twice.

It’s going to be cold in this frozen world, so dress warmly. You can purchase tickets online for the Ice Castles from the end of January to the end of February. The attraction could extend beyond these months if the weather permits.

Hike the Mountains of the Adirondacks

A woman sitting on rocks at the summit of Whiteface Mountain

  • Indian Head Hike : You can still catch killer views of the Adirondacks without scaling the high peaks. Indian Head has a rocky overlook with stellar views of the Lower Ausable Lake without putting too much effort into getting there. It’s not an easy breezy hike, but it’s certainly not the most difficult around.
  • Cobble Lookout : If you want more of a walk than a hike, the trail to Cobble Head is only 2 ½ miles and great for leisurely stroll. It only takes about an hour, and you’re still rewarded with picturesque views.
  • Whiteface Mountain : For hiking enthusiasts looking for a challenge, Whiteface Mountain is a popular area to challenge your skill. Hiking on Whiteface is open all year round, rain or shine, ice or snow. Make sure you’re prepared for this hike and start early to get the most out of your day.

Tour the Ausable Chasm

new york upstate places to visit

Ausable Chasm is an exciting canyon in the Adirondacks with a ton of activities to keep you busy. You must pay a fee to enter; even the hiking trails cost a fee, but they’re worth it. Paying for a tour will get you a package of tube rides, a guided tour of the canyon and caves, and more.

We recommend taking the day to explore the Ausable Chasm. It’s the perfect attraction for New Yorkers who want to experience the natural beauty in their own backyard.

Snowshoeing in the Adirondacks

A woman snowshoeing in the Adirondacks things to do in Upstate New York

The Adirondacks are one of the best places for an Upstate New York winter getaway if you love to ski. If you’re staying in or near Lake Placid, you have to check out Cascade X-C Ski Center. This place has everything you need, from rentals to apparel to equipment, and 12+ miles of trails! They also have a restaurant and lodging accommodations at the bunkhouse.

Renting an iconic cabin in the mountains is a dream, but it’s not always affordable. Staying at the bunkhouse is a great way to pay discounted rates at the ski center while getting that traditional Upstate New York lodging experience.

Winter Wonderland Lodging Experience

Mirror Lake Inn in the winter

Some of our favorite cute cabin and lodge rentals in Upstate New York are right in the Adirondacks. They range from grand to cozy, but all give you that Great Camp vibe.

  • Whiteface Lodge : Staying at the Whiteface Lodge is experiencing Lake Placid at its finest. This luxury hotel and spa are in the heart of the mountains. It’s surrounded by hiking trails to keep you busy all day, allowing you to end with a massage or a 3-course meal. (Nightcaps are available too!)
  • Other favorite amenities include a two-lane bowling alley and a small movie theatre. This is a wonderful accommodation for those who want to relax for a few days, with tons of onsite entertainment available.

  • Mirror Lake: If you love Mirror Lake as much as we do, you must try staying a night or two at Mirror Lake Inn. Their restaurant + bar is hands down one of our favorite places to eat in Lake Placid!

Swimming/Kayaking in the Adirondack Lakes (Like Lake George)

Lake George with an island and mountains in the background in Upstate New York

Visiting Lake George is the perfect long weekend getaway from New York City and the ultimate Upstate New York experience. Try renting a cabin by the beach for the ultimate lake vacation in the summer. There are a ton of boat tours in the area and places to rent kayaks and water skis, with lessons available to book.

When it gets hot, try grabbing a cool treat from Lake George Ice Cream in town. This is especially perfect for those spending the day at Million Dollar Beach. If you’re looking for a hiking trail to pass the time, Lake George is the gateway to the Adirondacks and has plenty.

Bonus : In the winter, Lake George offers several outdoor opportunities as well. And even hosts a Winter Festival , which includes an ice castle.

The Hudson Valley

Grab a drink at the cider house.

In the fall, the Hudson Valley turns into apple country. And every apple has the capability to turn into a tart, crisp, delicious cider. While not everyone has tried apple cider, this was certainly a popular drink back in the day. Hudson Valley cider mills are bringing back the hype around cider, and there are dozens of places you can go to sample the goods.

Kettleborough Cider House is one of our favorites and has a spectacular view of Shawangunk Ridge. Twin Star Orchards is another premier spot, often providing live music and food to buy. Some cider houses also double as an orchard or farms where you can pick apples!

Take a Private Helicopter Tour in the Hudson Valley

The fall foliage in the Hudson Valley is breathtaking, especially from a bird’s eye view. You can book a Private Fall Foliage Helicopter Tour of the Hudson Valley that will take you high above the tree tops to soak in all the natural fall colors. This trip leaves right from Manhattan and takes about 30 minutes total, perfect for a quick trip out of New York City.

Persue Art at Dia Beacon Museum

A woman visiting Dia Beacon Museum, one of the best things to do in Upstate New York

Love contemporary art? Dia Beacon is a hub for contemporary artists set on the shore of the Hudson River.  The museum itself is in an old Nabisco box-printing favorite, with ethereal nature lighting you must see to believe. Art displays range from the 1960s to the present day and feature a number of rotating exhibits.

If you want to ditch your car (or don’t have one), you can take the Metro-North Hudson Line train from Grand Central Station all the way to Beacon. The museum is within walking distance from there and close to tons of cafés, shops, and restaurants on Main Street. Our favorite places here are All You Knead Artisan Bakers and Reserva Wine Bar .

Visit Hudson Valley Wineries

There’s another way to explore the natural beauties of the Hudson Valley without having to hike around–visiting wineries. Wineries in the Hudson Valley are sprawled across acres of stunning fields, with mountain backgrounds, sometimes with views of lakes and rivers Not to mention, wineries in this area of the state know how to craft a delicious glass of wine!

Robibero Winery near New Paltz has stunning views of the Shawangunk Mountain range–the drive here from New York City is simply gorgeous. Robibero was voted one of the best wineries in the Hudson Valley for handcrafted batches. Other popular spots include Benmarl Winery in the rolling hill of Marlboro with views of the Hudson River and Magnanini Winery, Restaurant & Distillery in Walkill.

Hike Through the Hudson Valley

A girl sitting on a rock, on a hike in Upstate New York, with the trees below as the background

  • Anthony’s Nose : This is a perfect route if you want an easy out-and-back hike you can complete in under 4 hours. Anthony’s Nose boasts fantastic views of the Hudson River, Bear Mountain, and Bear Mountain Bridge. You can take one of two paths up the mountain; my favorite part is the way back!
  • Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze : Set on the Mohonk Preserve, this unique hike and rock scramble is challenging. You have to put in a lot of effort to get the reward of the view, but it’s worth every second. The viewpoint overlooks Shawangunk Ridge and its beautiful surroundings.
  • Mount Beacon : Mount Beacon checks all the boxes for me when it comes to a perfect hike. This is not an easy breezy hike by any means, but it’s not a grueling struggle either. The views from the top are breathtaking, and it only takes a half day to finish, so you can enjoy some food in downtown Beacon when you’re done.
  • Taconic Mountain : Hiking the Taconic Mountains is challenging, but the reward is worth the effort. This trail is nestled in Dutchess County, where New York meets Connecticut and Massachusetts. When you get to the top, you can see views of the Berkshires, Catskills, and the Hudson River. The trail is rugged and steep. Spikes are recommended if you have them, and bring lots of water.

Exploring the open-air museum at Storm King Arts Center is out of this world. It beats an old stuffy, dark museum by far and offers visitors access to the country’s largest collection of contemporary outdoor sculptures!

Take your time here wandering around the grounds and really taking in works of art like Suspended or the Three-Legged Buddha . These sculptures are so large you’re barely going to notice any of the other visitors while you are transfixed on all the beautiful pieces.

Central New York Region

Hiking in chittenango falls state park.

Central New York has just as many opportunities to splash in the water as the Finger Lakes and Great Lakes regions.  Just southeast of Syracuse, visitors can stop at Chittenango Falls State Park, where they can have a picnic lunch, take a stroll, or hike to a dazzling waterfall.

We love this small park because it’s easy to walk around and access the waterfalls. It doesn’t take a lot of time or preparation to visit Chittenango Falls State Park, and they’re even a little footbridge for a casual stop.

Shop Around at Syracuse Antiques Exchange

If you love antiques, you have to spend some time at Syracuse Antiques Exchange , featuring four floors full of treasures. Commonly known as ‘The Bluffs’ in communities across Central New York, Chimney Bluffs State Park is a picturesque scene on the shores of Lake Ontario with dramatic spikey “bluffs” along the waterfront. Visiting this park on a summer day was one of our favorite things to do in Oswego when we were students there! The bluffs are so dramatic and look stunning on the shore.

There is a myriad of trails along The Bluffs you can walk along. It’s not uncommon to find students from SUNY Oswego or other local colleges soaking up a little bit of warmth on the sand before the cold hits Central New York.

21 Best Places to Visit Upstate NY

  • In the City / New York / Outdoors / USA

Looking for a getaway from the city? These are the best places to visit Upstate NY.

I wrapped the duvet around myself to conserve the warmth as I listened to the pitter-patter of the rain outside our campervan. I dozed in and out for another 45 minutes before finally sitting up. Esther still laid curled up under the covers, and I was not about to wake the beast. As I dressed, I couldn’t help but smile in excitement for the next few days of exploring upstate.

During our trip, we mostly left it as a bed, and used the picnic table in our campsites. The back also opens up to a kitchen, with a camp stove, hand pump sink, and all the cooking items needed.

The Adirondacks region is the best place to go in Upstate New York if you want to enjoy scenic views, crisp mountain air, and exhilarating adventures. Specifically, we recommend visiting Lake Placid.

16. Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow

You may have heard of Sleepy Hollow in the context of ghost stories thanks to Washington Irving, but visiting Sleepy Hollow is actually a very pleasant experience!

Hudson Highlands State Park has some of the most picturesque views and best hiking trails in New York, in our opinion.

If you don’t feel like hiking, you can get in touch with your artistic side at Hudson Beach Glass or Dia: Museum .

If you have time for a meal in Beacon, we highly recommend reserving a table at The Roundhouse , which was built during the 1800s and has a fascinating history and a modern menu based on American cuisine. You can also book a room here if you want to stay overnight.

Niagara Falls

Upstate New York's most famous sight makes a dramatic impression on visitors. Niagara Falls is a thrilling and awe-inspiring natural wonder, the largest of the waterfalls in New York State and one of the most beautiful.

Established in 1885 with landscaping designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Niagara Falls State Park encompasses 400 acres, with excellent facilities: hiking trails, picnic areas, an aquarium, welcome center, gift shop, snack bar, and restaurant that overlooks the waterfalls. Open daily year-round, Niagara Falls State Park tops the list of tourist attractions in the town of Niagara Falls .

Within the park, the Prospect Point Observation Tower provides a viewing platform to admire amazing panoramas of the three falls (American, Bridal Veil, and Horseshoe).

To truly experience the grandeur of the scenery, try a Niagara Falls American Side Highlights Tour or a Maid of the Mist boat tour. Maid of the Mist boat tours begin at the base of the Observation Tower and travel past American Falls and into the basin of the dramatic Horseshoe Falls. Passengers marvel over the thundering cascades, and feel the refreshing mists.

For those seeking accommodations nearby, the city of Buffalo appeals to travelers who appreciate urban destinations. New York's second largest city, Buffalo brims with cultural attractions: top-notch art museums; a National Historic Landmark theater where musicals are performed; and a botanical garden designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who created Central Park in New York City.

Windham Mountain trail in the Catskills

The Catskill Park contains thousands of miles of hiking trails and features some of the most iconic scenery in Upstate New York. The Catskill Park's natural splendor has earned it a place among the list of best state parks in New York .

Kaaterskill Falls has been on the tourist circuit since the early 1800s and visiting this spot still ranks among the top things to do in the Catskills region . There are two different options for getting to Kaaterskill Falls: Take a short walk to a viewing platform, or hike down (1.4 miles round trip) to the falls. The trail down to the falls includes a staircase of natural rocks that get slippery from the waterfall spritz.

Note : Steep drop-offs close to the trail make this hike dangerous for those who stray from the path. Caution is strongly advised when hiking this path, as fatalities and injuries have occurred on the Kaaterskill Falls trail. Hikers should stay on the trail, away from the edges, at all times.

The Kaaterskill Falls hiking area (which includes a system of trails) is very popular. The parking lot often fills up. To avoid the crowds, arrive early or later in the afternoon. Additional parking is available off County Route 18 on Laurel House Road or Scutt Road in Haines Falls. It's also possible to pay for parking at the North-South Lake Campground and take a trail from there.

A less-traveled path nearby is the hiking trail to North Point (with trailhead at Scutt Road) despite being just a short drive from the usually crowded North-South Lake Campground , which has a variety of hiking trails with splendid viewpoints along the way.

Other less-crowded hikes are found past the village of Maplecrest in the Windham-Blackhead Range Wilderness .

Hudson Valley

A bucolic landscape of forested rolling hills, small farms, and apple orchards awaits visitors in the Hudson Valley , nestled between the Catskill and Taconic mountain ranges. This picturesque scenery inspired a new art movement in the 19th century.

Thomas Cole, the founding father of the Hudson River School , created glorious works of art depicting the beauty of the Hudson Valley and the neighboring Catskills region. In the charming Hudson Valley town of Catskill , tourists may visit the house where Thomas Cole lived and worked (Thomas Cole National Historic Site), which affords sweeping views of the Catskill Mountains from the porch.

The Thomas Cole National Historic Site displays a permanent collection of Thomas Cole's works and also hosts temporary exhibitions (on art and historical topics) on a regular basis. Guided tours are available on weekdays, and self-guided general admission on weekends (advanced reservations are recommended).

Another Hudson River School painter, Frederic Church built a Persian-inspired villa on a hilltop in nearby Olana. His former residence and 250-acre estate is classified as a National Historic Landmark and a New York State Historic Site. Olana State Historic Site presents the well-preserved interior decor of Frederic Church's home and displays a small collection of Frederic Church's artworks.

To continue the discovery of Hudson Valley art, head north to the Albany Institute of History & Art , one of the top places to visit in Albany , which is renowned for its collection of Hudson River School paintings.

The more adventurous can hike to the viewpoints where the artists created their works. The Hudson River School Art Trail lists these locations. The hikes range from easy to challenging. It's interesting to consider that the artists hiked difficult trails with their art supplies in tow.

Untermyer Gardens

The Hudson Valley also has many public parks and gardens. These include Untermyer Gardens , which includes an ancient Persian-inspired walled garden and terraced gardens; Innisfree Garden , inspired by Chinese and Japanese landscaping, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and the 68-acre Boscobel Gardens , a formal garden, apple orchard, and woodland on an elegant historic estate built between 1804 and 1808.

One of the top day trips from New York City , Storm King Art Center in New Windsor is a must-see destination for those who appreciate contemporary art installations. This 500-acre outdoor museum showcases large-scale sculptures along walking paths with views of the rolling hills, meadows, and forests. Storm King Art Center is near the little town of Cornwall , which has a great local coffee shop and a few casual restaurants.

Further north in the Hudson Valley, Art Omi is a 120-acre sculpture park in the town of Ghent. Over 60 art installations by contemporary artists are on display. Admission is free, but advance registration is recommended.

For a gourmet breakfast (including fresh-baked croissants and pastries), coffee break, or lunch, stop by the Bartlett House bakery/café nearby (a five-minute drive from Art Omi).

Steamboat on Lake George

Lake George is arguably one of the prettiest lakes in New York State , in one of the state's most beautiful regions. Densely wooded rolling hills of the Adirondack Mountains frame the glistening 32-mile-long expanse of deep-blue waters, which are dotted with islands and shaped along the contours of small coves and bays.

Since the mid 1800s, Lake George has been a premier vacation destination. Even before that, Thomas Jefferson praised the lake's beauty in a letter written in 1791.

A classic way to discover the beauty of Lake George is by taking a steamboat ride. The Lake George Steamboat Company has offered recreational boat rides for over a 100 years, and their boat cruises still rank high on the list of tourists' favorite things to do in Lake George . The company runs three different boats: the Mohican, built in 1908, which travels the length of Lake George in six hours; the Steamboat Minne-Ha-Ha, a traditional paddlewheel steamship; and the Lac du Saint Sacrement ship, which offers Sunday brunch, luncheon, and sunset dinner cruises.

The Lake George Steamboat Company operates cruises from early May until late October. Cruises on the Steamboat Minne-Ha-Ha are the most popular; during the summer season, the Minne-Ha-Ha one-hour narrated cruises are available daily on an almost hourly basis.

Cruises with the Lake George Steamboat Company depart from the Steel Pier in Lake George Village , which has a lively downtown and top resort hotels. Most acclaimed of the Lake George area resorts, The Sagamore has waterfront restaurants, an outdoor swimming pool overlooking the lake, a pampering spa, and its own small ship (the replica of a 19th-century vessel) that runs sightseeing cruises.

Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park

The Hudson Valley conceals an array of sprawling estates that were created for wealthy New Yorkers during the Gilded Age. Visiting these sites provides a window into the lifestyle of affluence during that era, while staying at nearby luxury resorts allows travelers to further experience Gilded Age opulence.

Set on a leafy 67-acre riverfront parkland, Lyndhurst reveals an appreciation of nature that was influenced by 19th-century Romanticism. This magnificent Gothic Revival landmark was commissioned in 1838 by William S. Paulding Jr. (New York City mayor during the 1820s) and in 1880 was purchased by railroad tycoon Jay Gould who only updated the interior slightly. Similar to Paulding, Jay Gould resided at the country estate part-time when seeking a retreat from NYC.

The Lyndhurst estate is designated as a National Trust Historic Site . The mansion has been well preserved and is still adorned with the original antique furnishings and decorative objects. A noteworthy collection of art is on display throughout the mansion.

Visitors may take a guided Mansion Tour at Lyndhurst to admire the lavish interior. It's also possible to take a Landscape Tour for a guided outdoor walk, or purchase a Daily Grounds Pass to explore the estate's parkland without visiting the mansion.

The Lyndhurst estate is open from April through December. The estate hosts summertime outdoor jazz concerts. During the holiday season, the mansion is magnificently decorated with dozens of Christmas trees.

Kykuit Mansion near Sleepy Hollow

Nearby in the quaint historic village of Sleepy Hollow , the Kykuit mansion embodies the essence of Gilded Age grandeur. John D. Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil, built the Kykuit mansion between 1906 and 1913. At the time, Rockefeller was America's wealthiest man, and the interior was designed by renowned American decorator Ogden Codman Jr.

The mansion later become the residence of four generations of Rockefellers. Grandson Nelson Rockefeller added a superb collection of modern art (currently displayed in a gallery at Kykuit). The Kykuit estate is still maintained by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, one of the family's philanthropic programs.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has designated Kykuit as a historic site. The Kykuit mansion is open to the public for guided tours from the end of May through mid-November.

Another extravagant Gilded Age country estate is found in the Hudson Valley town of Hyde Park. The Vanderbilt Mansion , a gem of understated Neoclassical architecture, was purchased by Frederick Vanderbilt in 1895 and used as a seasonal residence. As one of America's wealthiest and most esteemed families at the time, the Vanderbilts brought to this summertime retreat their enviable aristocratic lifestyle of house parties and outdoor recreation. The family enjoyed tennis, golf, and carriage rides.

Today this iconic 54-room mansion is designated as a National Historic Site. The 200-acre estate features vistas of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. The Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site is open to the public daily year-round, except on holidays. A guided tour is required to visit the interior of the Vanderbilt Mansion. Guided mansion tours are available Thursday through Monday.

Kayaking in the Adirondacks

Nature lovers and outdoor adventure seekers, rejoice! The six-million-acre Adirondack Park , the largest wilderness preserve in the contiguous United States, is packed with breathtaking landscapes: soaring mountains, expansive forests, pristine rivers, rushing waterfalls, sheltered valleys, and thousands of freshwater lakes.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation maintains more than 2,000 miles of hiking trails in the Adirondacks. Other recreational opportunities include boating, kayaking, camping, and fishing.

One of the region's highlights, Lake George draws many visitors for its water sports and outdoor activities, such as camping on the lake's island campsites. Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake are great for canoeing. The Ausable River is renowned for fly-fishing and whitewater paddling.

The Adirondacks region is one of the best getaways in Upstate New York , especially for those who love hiking and camping. For those who don't like roughing it, the solution is simple: Plan to stay at a cozy rustic-chic hotel or an upscale lodge, for welcome accommodations after long days of vigorous outdoor activity.

To get the classic "Adirondack Great Camp" experience, try Great Camp Sagamore , a National Historic Landmark on Raquette Lake . If money is no object, spend the night like Gilded Age houseguests at The Point resort, a sumptuous five-star Relais & Châteaux property on Saranac Lake that delivers the ultimate in Adirondack Rustic luxury and is considered one of the region's top resorts .

Other historic Adirondack Great Camps include White Pine Camp , once the summer residence of Calvin Coolidge and now a lodge that's open year-round, and Great Camp Santanoni , a former private compound (classified as a National Historic Landmark) set on a 13,000-acre forest preserve. Great Camp Santanoni offers guided tours (from July 4th until Labor Day), hiking trails, horse-drawn wagon rides, canoeing, and backcountry camping sites in the summer, and during Winter Weekend events allows access to cross-country ski trails and the main lodge.

Aerial view of Fort Ticonderoga

Fort Ticonderoga brings American history to life in a fascinating way. This 18th-century fort in the Adirondacks region was an important site during the American Revolution and presents special events, such as soldiers' dinners, weapons and musket maintenance demonstrations, and military music that allow visitors to imagine the realities of the war.

The 2,000-acre site includes the historic fort; a farm-to-table restaurant, America's Fort Café , with views of Lake Champlain; take-out food options; picnic tables; the six-acre King's Garden , formerly the military garrison gardens; a corn maze; and a museum with a collection of Revolutionary-era exhibits. From August through October, visitors may participate in apple picking at the orchard of the King's Garden.

From early May through the end of October, Fort Ticonderoga is open from 9:30am to 5pm Tuesday through Sunday. From November through April, Fort Ticonderoga is closed except when living history programs are held here (check the website for details).

Autumn in Upstate New York dazzles visitors with its glorious beauty. From the Catskill Mountains to the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley and the Finger Lakes region, fall enlivens the New York landscape, transforming the foliage into a stunning spectacle of vibrant hues.

The scenery begins to change in late September or early October and continues through October until around early November, with a gradual procession of leaves changing from green to brilliant gold, amber, and rust tones. The profusion of bursting colors is especially marvelous on sunny days and in the countryside.

Beautiful leaf-peeping drives include the 52-mile Scenic Byway on New York State Route 28 from Shokan to Andes in the Catskills; the shorter Durham Valley Scenic Byway on New York State Route 32 and Route 23 from Greenville to Windham in the Catskills; the 30-mile High Peaks Scenic Byway in the Adirondacks; and the Seneca Lake Scenic Byway in the Finger Lakes Region.

An especially picturesque drive begins in the town of Geneva and follows alongside the sparkling blue waters of Seneca Lake until reaching the village of Watkins Glen . As the largest and deepest lake in the Finger Lakes Region, Seneca Lake reveals dazzling cobalt hues when the sun is shining.

On Route 14 , which follows the contours of Seneca Lake from Geneva to Watkins Glen, there are some places to stop for a gourmet lunch while admiring views of the lake: Lancellotti 's restaurant, which overlooks the lake and formal gardens at the Geneva on the Lake resort hotel; and the Stonecutter's Tavern , a casual pub-style restaurant at the upscale Belhurst Castle boutique hotel, one of the best resorts in the Finger Lakes Region.

At the southernmost end of the drive along Seneca Lake is a rewarding place to visit: Watkins Glen , a lovely waterfront village with a historic downtown. Horse racing at Saratoga Springs

A prestigious horse racing heritage and a continued tradition of thoroughbred horse races gives Saratoga Springs a special allure. The Saratoga Race Course holds the horse races during six weeks every year from mid-July until Labor Day.

The Saratoga horse races draw crowds and are known for the old-fashioned ambience . Many horse-racing enthusiasts get into the spirit by wearing stylish outfits and flamboyant hats.

Opened in 1863, the Saratoga Race Course track facility has retained its Victorian architectural details. Of course, the facility has been updated with modern amenities such as snack bars and well-maintained restrooms. Several clubhouse restaurants offer a sit-down dining experience.

The summer is the most popular time to visit because you can enjoy several more activities here from hiking, rafting, tubing, bouldering, and more!

  • Niagara Falls

winter-at-Niagara-Falls-from-the-New-York-side-of-the-falls

One of the top tourist attractions in the United States (and North America) is Niagara Falls! Without a doubt, this is also one of the best natural wonders of New York !

You should definitely plan around spending time on both the United States and Canadian side of the falls. The Canadian side offers plenty of incredible hotels with views of the falls and many of the attractions surrounding the falls.

The US side offers a fantastic park with incredible, close-up views of the waterfall. Until Scott and I went recently, I hadn’t been since I was a child. It made my knees tremble looking at the top of the falls and seeing the sheer volume and force of the water plunging over the top.

During the warmer months, you’ll want to take a Maid of the Mist boat tour for an up-close experience with the falls! Niagara Falls is also one of our favorite leaf-peeping spots in Upstate New York in the fall.

There are great walking trails throughout the park and on Goat Island that offer great views of the falls. And for even more sightseeing, the historic Observation Tower is a must-visit spot.

beautiful homes in Hudson New York in the Hudson Valley

The town of Hudson is probably one of our favorite towns in the Hudson Valley near NYC! If you love great antique shopping, excellent food, and historical sites you’ll find plenty of stuff to do in Upstate NY right here.

Start on Warren Street, which is Hudson’s charming downtown area. You can enjoy an easy 1-mile stretch lined with clothing boutiques, the coolest record shop, bookstores, and one-of-a-kind eateries.

I’m always looking for vintage treasures when we travel, and antique shopping alone is one of the best things to do in Hudson ! Hands down, The Antique Warehouse is an essential stop and if you’re like us, you’ll need at least a few hours to really explore!

Warren Street also features its share of antique stores that will not disappoint.

If you’re a fan of cool-looking lighthouses, one of the cutest is located in Hudson in the Hudson River. Or if you love old mansions, you’ll love the Olana State Historic Site nearby, another one of our favorite things to do in Hudson Valley . This 19th-century estate is a special piece of Hudson River Valley history that you can tour on the weekends.

  • Lake George

pretty lake george scene in the fall in new york adirondacks

Another one of our favorite places to visit in Upstate New York in the Adirondacks region is Lake George. While this is one of the most famous summer lake vacation spots in New York , Lake George is stunning in the fall during fall foliage.

There’s no shortage of things to do in Lake George , in the fall it’s a MUST to do the scenic fall foliage boat rides. In the winter, less things are open, but the town does invite the winter tourists looking for an Adirondacks winter getaway including skiing at West Mountain.

No matter when you go, Lake George is a blast, with all the local breweries, wineries, and distilleries. If the weather’s good, there are also a surprisingly fun number of mini-golf in the area! And if you love American history, there are some fascinating 18th-century forts nearby including Fort William Henry in town!

View of Montauk Point Lighthouse from Camp Hero State Park Bluffs in the Hamptons New York

Located at the northern tip of Long Island, often referred to as “the end of the world,” Montauk is a dreamy Hamptons getaway.

Some highlights include the misty Montauk Point Lighthouse (the oldest lighthouse in New York!), the gorgeous beaches, and local spa resorts if you’re looking to splurge.

There’s also a cool downtown area, where you’ll find the Montauk Brewing Company and other great restaurants!

During the summer, there are tons of amazing things to do in Montauk , between the plethora of seafood restaurant options and beaches with their exciting surfing scene.

Or visit Camp Hero State Park, which will fascinate everyone, from outdoor lovers and World War II enthusiasts to conspiracy theorists as well! (the conspiracies are said to be the inspiration behind the plot of Stranger Things!)

But we recommend visiting Montauk during the less-crowded shoulder seasons, which is also nice. We visited in April and it was really nice to enjoy not only Montauk, but all the other cool things to do in the Hamptons without the crowds!

  • Letchworth State Park

Letchworth State Park waterfall and trail in New York

Letchworth State Park should be on your bucket list if you love waterfalls. It’s a stunning park along the Genessee River in the Finger Lakes region featuring a few of the largest and most dramatic New York waterfalls .

It boasts around 50 different waterfalls, 66 miles of hiking trails, and the nickname “Grand Canyon of the East.”

Come here if you’re looking for outdoor things to do in Upstate New York during the summer or fall. That’s when this breathtaking park shines!

There’s also kayaking, guided walks, horseback riding, fall foliage hikes, and much more. And May through October, you can see the park in a whole new way on a hot air balloon ride over the falls.

Winter offers its own magic, with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities (though a lot of trails close this time of year).

And if you plan your trip in the spring through summer, you can book a stay at the Glen Iris Inn right at the waterfalls! This is something that’s been on our to-do list for awhile now! One of these years we will do it!

  • The Roxbury Experience

the upstairs bedroom at Cinderella's Gown at the Roxbury Experience in Roxbury New York

The town of Roxbury is set in the rugged Catskill Mountains and has been the inspiration of artists, nature lovers, and winter athletes for two centuries. But one of the coolest things this area is known for is The Roxbury Experience!

One of the most memorable places to visit in Upstate New York is the quaint town of Roxbury at the Roxbury Motel, a themed hotel that is worth basing an entire getaway around!

The Roxbury is made up of two very different sites: a renovated motor lodge in town with themed rooms and an elegant 19th-century estate a few miles away that has incredible themed cottages as well as rooms in the historic, original Inn at the Roxbury at Stratton Falls.

Stay at the Roxbury Motel for campy (but also elegant) themes, like “The Final Frontier” and “Tony’s Dance Floor!” We stayed at “Cinderella’s Gown” and “Dracula’s Fangs,” both of which were INCREDIBLE and unforgettable!

At the Roxbury at Stratton Falls, has an actual waterfall that’s gorgeous to visit along with the spa and a few wooded walking trails.

Hawk’s Nest

Hawks Nest scenic drive and road along the Delaware River near Port Jervis New York

Let’s get one thing straight. Upstate NY has no a shortage of scenic drives and one of the most dramatic is for sure the Hawk’s Nest Lookout drive. You’ll find the stone overlook along Highway 97, a winding road with hairpin turns that follows the Delaware River.

We’ve mentioned it as a stop if you’re exploring the towns and villages speckling the Catskills because it’s worth going out of your way to experience!

Whether you need a break from the summer heat or want to enjoy a scenic fall foliage drive, the curving highway drive through the mountains presents amazing views of lush mountain forests and the river below.

Plus, Hawk’s Nest gets its name because of the hawks and eagles that make their nests here in the early fall. As they migrate south, this is where to go in Upstate New York to see the birds of prey in all their glory.

  • The Site of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival

site of Woodstock music festival in Bethel New York

If you want to visit the original Woodstock Music Festival Site, you won’t go to Woodstock, NY . No, you’ll go to Bethel, about 50 miles southwest! While Woodstock is surely one of the coolest towns to visit in the Catskills , it’s much further from the actual festival site despite the name, that’s another story but essentially the festival was meant to be in Woodstock, and it wasn’t.

The infamous 1969 festival was held in a field at a dairy farm in Bethel, and today you can visit the plaque commemorating the event along with visiting The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, which includes a museum dedicated to this legendary event!

One of the best things to do in Upstate New York, this art complex honors the memories of the 1960s and the impact the Woodstock Music Festival had on the era. The indoor and outdoor exhibits are moving and memorable.

After exploring Bethel, you’ll be hungry, so stop at Kev’s BBQ! Their award-winning ribs must be experienced. Kev’s is open May through mid-November, offering picnic-style dining from their food truck.

  • Beacon & Bannerman Castle

Bannerman Castle on the Hudson River near the town of Beacon New York in the Hudson Valley in the fall

Art, antiques, good food, nature, and a castle on the Hudson River? Yes, please! Set on the banks of the Hudson River, the walkable town of Beacon is the perfect weekend getaway.

The art museum Dia: Beacon is a must, the amazing hiking trails out of town are mind-blowing, and downtown Beacon is so cute full of charming shops, restaurants, and historic storefronts!

With tours leaving from Beacon, Bannerman Castle is truly a gem to visit! If you love unique Hudson Valley history, you’ll love exploring this interesting 18th-century Scottish-inspired castle that served as a military surplus warehouse sitting on top of Pollepel Island in the Hudson River.

April through October, you can choose from a boat or kayak tours. Once there, you can explore the wooded paths around the castles, as well as learn about the castle ruins themselves, which is a fascinating story! We went this last fall and it was such a memorable experience!

  • Seneca Falls

Seneca Falls NY sign home of the womens rights movement

Seneca Falls, a town packed with historical stuff to do in Upstate NY. History lovers will find countless things to do here. Seneca Falls is best known as the birthplace of the Women’s Rights Movement and modern feminism, and also as the inspiration for Bedford Falls in the Frank Capra film, It’s a Wonderful Life!

There are all the moving women’s rights sites, including the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Wesleyan Chapel in the Women’s Rights National Historic Park. And you can explore the charming It’s a Wonderful Life Museum before taking a walk on the famous bridge from the movie.

Plus, Seneca Falls is set between Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake and offers access to exploring the whole Finger Lake region!

  • Hop Around the Hamptons

megan reading a newspaper under the windmill in Sag Harbor Hamptons New York

Located on eastern Long Island’s South Fork, the Hamptons offer visitors a string of darling (and luxurious) beachfront towns and villages to explore.

While the Hamptons can be visited every season of the year, it should be no surprise that the towns of the Hamptons are hopping during the summer!

Some essential stops include the charming town of Sag Harbor, a former whaling village. It’s full of fascinating historical sites, a top-notch dining scene, and one of the prettiest Main Streets we’ve seen!

We also recommend visiting East Hampton at the end of the summer for its white-sand beaches, local art galleries, and dining and shopping opportunities on Main Street.

Southampton is another must-see destination, with even more amazing shopping and the original Tate’s Bakeshop! Take a drive along Billionaire’s Lane, and while you’re here, you’ll want to go wine tasting and check out the gorgeous white-sand beaches.

Ithaca Falls in downtown Ithaca NY

The catchy slogan for Ithaca is, Ithaca is Gorges! And it’s no wonder why boasting 150 waterfalls within a 10-mile radius in the heart of the Finger Lakes! Beyond the incredible waterfalls in Ithaca , you’ll find as well as the beautiful Cayuga Lake, and the lovely downtown that’s home to both Ithaca College and Cornell University.

Some of our favorite things to do in Ithaca (there are a lot) include hiking trails to see one cascading waterfall after another at Buttermilk Falls State Park and Robert H. Treman State Park.

Further out, take a scenic drive a few minutes along Cayuga Lake to see the 250-foot waterfall at Taughannock Falls State Park. And that’s just a few of our favorites!

Just make sure in between chasing waterfalls that you spend time exploring downtown and enjoying the amazing dining and drinking scene here!

  • Fort Ticonderoga

Fort Ticonderoga in New York

If you’re looking for historic sites and things to do in Upstate New York in the Adirondacks, consider a visit to Fort Ticonderoga. Set on a peninsula overlooking Lake Champlain, this area along the New York/Vermont state line is ripe with American history.

Fort Ticonderoga is a beautifully preserved 18th-century fortress built by the French that saw both the War of 1812 and the Revolutionary War. It was seized at different times by the English and then Americans. The fort is open seasonally, offering guests a variety of experiences, including different tours, demonstrations, events, and more.

Today, the fort is in a very rural area (and offers amazing views of the lake!). The greater area around Lake Champlain and nearby Plattsburgh offers a variety of fun things to do throughout the year.

downtown New Paltz New York town

Another amazing Upstate New York destination for American history is the 300-year-old town of New Paltz. Start your exploration in the cute downtown area. The hilly Main Street is lined with colorful 19th-century storefronts featuring fun shops, antique stores, fusion restaurants, ancient delis, and more!

Make your way down to the historic Huguenot Street, a National Historic Landmark District that dates to the 1600s. You can explore the 7 houses, the church and graveyard, and the Esopus Munsee Wigwam that make up the district. There’s a visitors center and some of the homes are open as museums.

While you’re in the area, don’t miss the opportunity to at least visit the stunning Mohonk Preserve and explore the trails (or stay at the famous Mohonk Mountain House ). New Paltz is also a good place to head out on a hike into the rugged Minnewaska State Park.

view of downtown rochester new york

Rochester is a bustling city on the banks of Lake Ontario that offers visitors tons of the best stuff to do in Upstate NY. We were blown away during our first trip, which made us come back for more of the amazing things to do in Rochester . Dare I say it’s one of the most underrated cities in the US ?

The city of Rochester is packed with culture, whether you’re coming for their Fringe Fest in the fall or visiting all the museums like the George Eastman Museum to learn about the founder of Kodak. Great Camp Sagamore on Sagamore Lake in the Adirondacks New York

This next pick for where to go in Upstate New York is a personal favorite. Tucked away in the Adirondacks region is Great Camp Sagamore, this historic lodge dates back to 1895 and involves the likes of the Vanderbilts!

We visited during the pandemic and didn’t get to go inside, but we did enjoy the absolutely stunning lake loop trail. It’s a pretty easy trail but it traverses through the forest and the flora and fauna changes dramatically throughout the trail. It was honestly just so beautiful and we both agreed it was one of our favorite walks we’ve done in nature together!

Hiking around Lake Sagamore on aan Adirondacks road trip in Upstate New York in the Fall

It’s definitely worth a visit, whether you’re stopping for a few hours or plan on staying a weekend. May through October, you can take educational tours of the 27 different buildings at Great Camp Sagamore, all designated National Historic Landmarks.

When Is The Best Time To See Fall Foliage In Upstate New York?

Generally speaking, the best time to see fall foliage in Upstate New York is between the last week of September through mid-October. However, this can vary greatly depending on what region you’re in. Remember, New York State is rather big, and terrain and average temperatures can vary quite a bit.

If you’re looking to experience peak fall foliage in places like the Adirondacks or the Catskills (basically, higher elevation locations), I would say the first week of October hits the sweet spot, and is generally safe to plan a visit around that time for peak foliage.

Peak foliage time in Upstate New York in the fall varies, depending on which region you're looking to visit. Be sure to check reports for the area you plan to visit, but generall, the first week of October is a good bet.

In the central and western New York regions (Buffalo, Finger Lakes, Syracuse, Albany), as well as the Hudson Valley, mid-October is typically peak foliage (although it can trend later in October in the Hudson Valley).

In the down state region, including Westchester, New York City and Long Island, peak foliage is usually mid to late October, sometimes coinciding with Halloween.

The Adirondacks are one of the best places to see fall foliage in Upstate New York.

As with anything nature-related, this can change from year to year depending on weather patterns. It’s good to stay flexible, or if you have to book your trip in advance, know it’s possible you could miss peak foliage time. But just remember, even if you miss peak foliage, you’ll still see lots of fall color everywhere if you come within the general timeframes, so you definitely don’t have to stress too much about it.

Where Is The Best Fall Foliage In New York?

Fall foliage can be seen all over New York State, even in NYC, but there are definitely some areas where the leaves are especially striking. Below is a list of some places with the best fall foliage in New York.

  • Adirondacks
  • Finger Lakes
  • Hudson Valley
  • New York City (while this list is focused on Upstate New York in the fall season, I wanted to mention NYC because there’s something very special about Central Park at peak foliage).

The Adirondacks is packed with amazing hiking trails that will display so much color in Upstate New York in the fall.

Best Things To Do In Upstate New York In The Fall (2022)

Everyone’s definition of Upstate New York varies, and there is no official defined area for this region. One thing to keep in mind as you go through this list is that I consider everything north of Westchester & Rockland counties to be Upstate New York – so basically, start in Hudson Valley, and work your way up to the rest of the state. But this is a big region spanning hours of driving time, so for each suggestion, I’ve also listed additional things that are close by to allow you to maximize your time in each destination.

1. Explore Watkins Glen State Park

Located in the Finger Lakes region, Watkins Glen State Park is a great destination year-round, I think it’s one of the best things to do in Upstate New York in the fall season because it’ll be covered in fallen leaves. This park has 19 waterfalls to see and miles of scenic walking and hiking trails. You could easily spend a whole day here to admire the foliage views, and have an adventurous day exploring all the waterfalls.

Watkins Glen State Park is amazing to visit in all seasons, but I think fall is the best.

Location Tip : This park is in an excellent location, and close to two other parks on this list, as well as Ithaca (also featured later in this post!). You can easily base yourself in this region, and visit Watkins Glen, Letchworth and Taughannock waterfalls/state parks, and Ithaca.

2. Hike The Indian Head & Rainbow Falls Trail

In the Adirondacks, one of my favorite fall hikes, and one of the best things to do in Upstate New York in the fall is the Indian Head and Rainbow Falls Trail. This trail is really popular in summer and fall, but I think fall is the best time to do it. Clocking in at around 10 miles, this moderately challenging trail makes for an awesome fall foliage day hike.

One of the best hikes to do in Upstate New York in the fall is the Indian Head trail.

The first part of the trail is an easy few miles along a scenic carriage path walk through the woods with tons of fall color, and then you’ll start a moderately challenging hike for about 3 miles up to Indian Head lookout. Once you get to the top of Indian Head, you’ll be rewarded with incredible lake views surrounded by colorful fall foliage. You’ll definitely want to budget some time to sit and enjoy the view (and maybe even pack a lunch to enjoy here!).

The rest of the trail is also very enjoyable and scenic, and another great stop is Rainbow Falls, which I recommend doing if time allows.

If you do the Indian Head trail, be sure to add on Rainbow Falls, which is so beautiful (and much taller than you think!).

This is an out and back trail, so you’ll end up right back where you started.

Parking Tip : This trail is very popular, and on weekends, the small parking area fills up quickly. I once arrived for this trail on a Saturday in October at 6am, and the lot was full. There is roadside parking in the area, and you should be able to find a spot as long as you arrive early on weekends. Weekdays will be less crowded.

Location Tip: The Indian Head & Rainbow Falls hike is only about 30-40 minutes from Lake Placid, making it easy to combine these two into one trip. Rent a cozy little cabin (which is later on this list!), and hike all day in the mountains, and enjoy the quaint little downtown in Lake Placid the rest of your time.

3. Head To Letchworth State Park

Another amazing option when planning out what to do in Upstate New York in the fall is to visit Letchworth State Park. This park is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the East because of its deep gorges and impressive waterfalls. I also think the best time to visit this park is in the fall season, surrounded by foliage.

One of the best things to do in Upstate New York in the fall is to spend a day at Letchworth State Park.

There are over 60 miles of hiking trails and scenic walks at this park, as well as 3 waterfalls to see. I highly suggest packing a nice lunch to enjoy in the park and making a fall day out of it.

Location Tip : This park is located about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Watkins Glen, and is also close to Ithaca and Taughannock Falls State Park, which is next on this list! You could also easily work in some Finger Lakes wine tasting.

4. Visit Taughannock Falls State Park

Lastly for the Finger Lakes region, Taughannock Falls State Park is another one you should definitely consider when planning your perfect day in Upstate New York in the fall. The main attraction at this park is the 217-foot tall waterfall, which is really exciting to see. The entire park is a bit smaller than the others mentioned in this post at only about 750 acres, but the walk to the waterfall is very easy and peaceful, and will be dripping in fall foliage. It’s definitely worth adding to your itinerary if you’re in the area.

Taughannock Falls is one of the smaller parks to visit in the fall season, but the walk to the waterfall is very scenic and packed with fall foliage.

Expert Tip : A great place to hang out before or after your walk to Taughannock waterfall is the park right across the street from the trail parking lot. It’s right on Cayuga Lake, and it’s really lovely and scenic, and worth a few moments of your time.

Location Tip: This park is about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Letchworth State Park, and about 30 minutes from Watkins Glen. It’s also close to Ithaca, making it easy to see all these sites in one trip, and also explore the Finger Lakes wine trail.

5. Drive The Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway

A great scenic drive to consider in Upstate New York in the fall is the Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway. The entire drive is just over 50 miles, and it takes you right through the middle of the Catskills region, providing incredible fall foliage views along the way. During the drive, you’ll also pass through four quaint little towns that are worth stopping in: Olive, Shandaken, Middletown and Andes.

A scenic foliage drive is one of the most fun and relaxing things to do in Upstate New York in the fall.

The two starting points of the byway are the eastern and western entrances. If you’re coming from south of the Catskills, you’ll want to start the drive at the eastern entrance and you’ll want to get off Exit 19 from the thruway, and drive about 12 miles west (look for signs). If you’re coming from north of the Catskills, you’ll start at the western entrance, and you’ll want to get off Exit 14W on Interstate 88, and drive about 33 miles east (again, look for signs).

There’s also a great audio tour you can download before your drive, which will share history of the area, as well as tips on where to eat and great hikes to take.

6. Taste Locally-Made Hard Cider At Wayside Cider

In the Catskills at the western entrance of the Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway, you’ll find Wayside Cider , which is another awesome place to visit in Upstate New York in the fall. This is where you can taste some of the best locally-made cider in the area. While visiting Wayside, you’ll be able to kick back and relax at one of their two renovated barns, where the taproom can be found. They also serve great food with a focus on locally-sourced ingredients and farm-to-table dining.

Location Tip : As mentioned, you can find Wayside Cider along the Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway, and it’s also located in the adorable town of Andes, making this an especially great place to stop during your drive. In Andes, you can also swing by Weaver Hollow Brewery to sample the local beer at their taproom.

7. Stay In A Cozy Cabin In The Adirondacks

One of the most fun things to do in Upstate New York in the fall is to rent a cozy cabin and just unplug for a while (and, you know, enjoy the incredible foliage scenery all around you). There are so many amazing little cabins to rent all over the region, and all will be accessible to awesome hiking trails and great restaurants. Below are some suggestions for you, and I usually recommend looking in areas that are about 30 minutes or less from Lake Placid, so you can easily enjoy the cute little downtown there.

With a stay in an Adirondacks cabin, you'll have access to countless fall foliage hikes in the area.

This cabin is centrally-located to all the best things to do in the Lake Placid area of the Adirondacks, including Whiteface Mountain, Au Sable Chasm and downtown Lake Placid. You’ll also only be 5-minutes from a great swimming hole and covered bridge. But at the cabin, you’ll have a quiet and secluded getaway in the woods with a fire pit for evening camp fires and s’mores.

Click here to book your stay at this centrally-located cabin!

This romantic and riverfront cabin is perfect for a couple, and it’s also pet-friendly if you’re hoping to take your pup with you on your Upstate fall getaway. The cabin offers spectacular views of the mountain vistas, and is right on the river. You’ll also have a small deck with Adirondack chairs to admire the foliage views, and a fire pit for evening camp fires and s’mores.

8. Find The Perfect Pumpkin At Pumpkinville

Located in the western part of the state you’ll find Pumpkinville , which is a really fun place to go in Upstate New York in the fall. You’ll easily be able to spend a few hours here not only searching for the best pumpkins, but also eating, shopping and just having a great time. At Pumpkinville, you’ll be able to grab some food from their grill, and also snack on fall favorites like cider donuts, fresh apple cider, caramel apples and baked goods.

You’ll also find shops with all kinds of goodies to take home including crafts, fall decor, homemade jams, maple syrup and tons more. Kids will also enjoy the farm animals and play areas, and adults will be excited to spend some time in the beer garden. It’s really a one-stop shop for everything fall, so it’s worth the journey out here.

Location Tip: Pumpkinville is very close to Ellicottville, and about an hour from Southern Tier (which is the next suggestion on this list). You could easily make a day trip to this region and do all three attractions for a wonderful fall day.

9. Taste The Most Amazing Fall Beer At Southern Tier Brewing

So I’m a little bias because my husband grew up right by Southern Tier Brewing Company , and it’s one of our all-time favorite breweries, but I can honestly say that their Warlock beer is hands down my favorite beer ever, even though it’s a limited release each fall season. If you’re in the area, it’s worth venturing over to their really fun taproom to grab a fresh Warlock imperial stout. While they’re most known for their pumpkin beer, Pumpking, I actually think Warlock is better (although, it’s a close call since both are honestly amazing).

The good news is, these beers are widely distributed all over the country, so you don’t have to visit the taproom to try them. But if you’re in the area, it’s especially fun to swing by and try a fresh batch at an outdoor table on a crisp, fall day.

10. Get Lost In A Corn Maze

There are some great corn mazes to visit in Upstate New York in the fall, and options vary from family-friendly to haunted. Below is a list of the best corn mazes to visit in Upstate New York.

You'll find tons of corn mazes in Upstate New York in the fall season.

Long Acre Farms Moonlight Maze (Rochester) – For something that’s a little more spooky than a daylight corn maze, but not anything super scary, an awesome option is the Moonlight Maze at Long Acre Farms. In addition to the corn maze, you’ll be able to spend a few hours here enjoying the kid’s playground area, grabbing delicious foods like wood-fired pizzas and cider donuts, going on wagon rides and sampling some of their wine! Of course, you can also tackle the maze during the day.

Location Tip: This corn maze and farm can be combined with a trip to the Finger Lakes region, as it’s only about 45 minutes from Letchworth State Park.

Stoughton Farms (Newark Valley) – An awesome corn maze can be found at Stoughton Farms, and in addition to the maze, you’ll also find hay rides and all kinds of activities for kids, as well as apples, pumpkins, seasonal produce and baked goods.

Location Tip: This corn maze and farm can easily be worked into a Finger Lakes fall trip, as it’s only about 30 minutes from Ithaca and an hour from Watkins Glen State Park.

Kesicke Farm (Rhinebeck) – In addition to their corn maze, you’ll find a fall festival celebration here on weekends from late September through October, which includes kid’s play areas, wagon and hay rides, a petting zoo and, of course, cider donuts.

Location Tip: This farm and corn maze is in Rhinebeck, which is a really lovely little town to visit in the Hudson Valley. This would be an easy day trip from NYC as well, and you could easily do the farm and corn maze, and spend some time in downtown Rhinebeck for a lovely fall day trip.

Tucker Farms (Gabriels) – The Great Adirondack Corn Maze can be found at Tucker Farms, and they also do flashlight maze nights after sunset. After going through the maze, you can sit by a bonfire and roast marshmallows for s’mores. The farm also does pumpkin patch tours, and allows visitors to pick pumpkins right from their farm.

Best Things To Do In Upstate New York In The Fall Close to NYC

If you’re in New York City and looking to plan a fall getaway upstate (or maybe even a day trip), everything on this list is less than 2 hours from NYC. You will need a car to explore most of these options, but I guarantee you, it will be more than worth it.

11. See The Great Jack-O-Lantern Blaze In Croton-On-Hudson (Near Sleepy Hollow!)

One of the most exciting things to do in Upstate New York in the fall is to experience the Great Jack-O-Lantern Blaze in Croton-on-Hudson, which most people combine with a trip to Sleepy Hollow since they’re only about 20 minutes from one another. At the Jack-O-Lantern Blaze, over 7,000 pumpkins are hand-carved by local artisans and illuminated along a walkway for a mystical, Halloween-inspired stroll.

One of the best things to do in the Hudson Valley in October is experience the Great Jack-O-Lantern Blaze.

The little town of Croton-on-Hudson is also very charming, and a great place to stop before or after the experience to grab a bite to eat.

Location Tip : This makes for a very easy day trip from NYC, as the event is only about an hour away. You can easily combine it with spending time in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, or turn it into a fun overnight getaway from the city.

12. Stay A Night (Or Two!) At Mohonk Mountain House

One of the best splurges to make in Upstate New York in the fall is a stay at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY. Of course, it’s a great destination year-round, but the fall is especially magical. Mohonk is a Victorian castle that’s surrounded by a stunning lake and over 4,000 miles of forest. Mohonk is an all-inclusive property where meals are included in your stay (some services, drinks and experiences are extra), and it’s the perfect getaway to rest and recharge your batteries.

Mohonk Mountain House is an amazing place to stay in Upstate New York in the fall season because you won't have to go far to take in beautiful foliage views.

On-site at Mohonk, you’ll have access to miles of stunning hiking trails, on-site restaurants, a spa, an ice cream shop, outdoor cocktail bars and so much more.

For those looking to visit just for the day, you can also get a guest day pass, with different options for hiking the trails, dining or visiting the spa. And with it being only 2 hours from New York City, it’s a very easy fall escape to make.

13. Hike At Minnewaska State Park

Minnewaska State Park is located in the Hudson Valley in Kerhonkson, and provides over 80 miles of scenic walking and hiking trails, as well as waterfalls, cliffs and sky lakes. During the fall, all of these natural elements are surrounded by gorgeous foliage, making this one of the best things to do in Upstate New York in the fall.

Gertrude's Nose Trail is one of the best hikes you can do at Minnewaska State Park in the fall season.

One of my favorite fall hikes at this park is Gertrude’s Nose Trail, which is just under 7 miles long, and makes for a great half-day hike (usually about 4 hours or so at a leisurely pace). There are so many places to admire fall foliage on this trail, and also lots of awesome photo opportunities out on the cliffs. You’ll even be rewarded with beautiful lake views, so this trail has a little bit of everything.

Location Tip: Minnewaska State Park is only 15 minutes from New Paltz, making it easy to combine these two destinations.

14. Visit The Angry Orchard Cidery

Located in Walden in the Hudson Valley, you can find the Angry Orchard cidery, which is actually really nice to visit year-round, but fall is specially fun during apple harvest season. While Angry Orchard ciders can be found all over the U.S., here at their Walden location, you’ll find beautiful tasting rooms and barns, a gorgeous outdoor patio with fire pits and really good food. Of course, you’ll be able to do tastings of their ciders, take guided tours of their facility, and also tour the orchards.

Location Tip: Angry Orchard is only about 25 minutes from New Paltz, so you can easily combine this with a day of cider tasting at the taproom, followed by hiking and exploration in New Paltz (or vice versa).

15. Hike The Storm King Mountain Trail

A great fall hike in the Hudson Valley is the Storm King Mountain Trail in Cornwall-on-Hudson. This trail is about 2.4 miles long, and offers incredible pay off with amazing fall foliage views and lots of lookout points for photos. The big pay off at the end is an incredible view of the Hudson River and mountain vistas.

This hike does require some rock scrambling, and I would definitely recommend some sturdy hiking boots to prevent injury.

Location Tip: Croton-on-Hudson has a cute little downtown that’s worth visiting after your hike to grab a bite to eat and relax. Another nice stop to make in town is Thompson’s Cider Mill to sample some great, locally-made hard cider. Lastly, you can also squeeze in a trip over to Croton Gorge to see the impressive New Croton Dam. All of these make for an awesome fall day trip from NYC.

16. Hop On A Haunted Headless Horseman Hayride

For a night of spooks and screams, you’ll want to head over to the Headless Horseman Haunted Hayride in Ulster, which has been named one of the best haunted hayrides in the country by outlets like USA Today , and has also been featured on the Travel Channel .

On the grounds, you’ll not only find this amazing haunted hayride, you’ll also be able to walk through several haunted houses and a haunted corn maze. This is the ultimate haunted house and hayride destination in Upstate New York in the fall! Just remember, these haunted tours are really, really scary, and not for the faint of heart.

17. Bike The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail (And Stop At The Secret Cafe In The Woods!)

The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail in Ulster County is such a fun way to see foliage in Upstate New York in the fall. The 22-mile bike path is very easy and flat, so it’s definitely a more relaxing bike experience, and takes you through the towns of Gardiner, New Paltz, Rosendale and Ulster. One thing to keep in mind is that the path isn’t entirely paved, but it still makes for an easy ride.

But the best part of the bike path? The secret cafe along the route! Well, it’s probably not super secret now, but it’s also not as well-known as many things on this list. The Rail Trail Cafe in New Paltz is right in the woods along the bike path, and can be found at Stone Mountain Farm. The cafe caters mostly to bikers that stop along the path, and they serve up amazing drinks, and farm-to-table foods like wood-fired pizzas, salads, sandwiches and more.

*If you’re hoping to get some wood-fired pizza, be sure to call in advance, as they only offer pizzas during events. The Rail Trail Cafe is only open Thursday-Sunday.

Right by the cafe, you can also rent a bike to head out onto the rail trail. Click here to go to the Happy Trails Bike Rental page for more info!

Location Tip : You can easily combine the rail trail and cafe with a trip to the Hudson Valley region, as the trail goes through a few towns in the area. If you’re staying at Mohonk Mountain House for a weekend, this is a great little side excursion.

Best Apple Picking In Upstate New York

Not only do they have awesome fields of apple orchards and scenic nature trails you can explore, they also have an on-site cidery, cafe and bakery that serves freshly-made cider donuts, as well as lots of other sweet treats.

Indian Ladder can get very busy on the weekends in the fall, so plan accordingly. I suggest getting there early to pick apples, and then secure a table at their restaurant/cafe to enjoy a nice lunch and to sample their cider.

Location Tip: To make a day of visiting Indian Ladder Farms, you could spend the first part of your day here, and then make the 30-minute drive to Esperance, NY to experience the Night Terrors Haunted Farm , which has been named one of the best haunted houses in the area.

19. Beak & Skiff

Beak & Skiff in Marietta is one of my personal favorite apple orchards to visit in Upstate New York in the fall, partially because I grew up near here, and it holds a special place in my heart. It’s also come a long way since my childhood days, and has expanded its apple orchards to now include a cidery, distillery, cider mill, general store, cafe and bakery. You’ll easily be able to spend several hours here!

The seasonal cider flavors here at Beak & Skiff are really good, and I enjoy their Cider Donut cider in the fall. It’s a little sweet, but for some reason, it works in my opinion. I also highly suggest stopping by their distillery for a spirits tasting.

Location Tip: Beak & Skiff is a short 15-minute drive to Skaneateles, which is an awesome little lakefront destination that would be great to combine with a trip to Beak & Skiff. It’s also only a 15-minute drive from Crazy Daisies , which is a cafe and flower market that offers awesome food, mimosa flights and will have plenty of fall flowers to decorate your porch.

Click here to read my guide on all the best things to do in Skaneateles!

20. Twin Star Orchards

Twin Star Orchards in New Paltz is an awesome place to visit in Upstate New York in the fall season. The Warwick AppleFest is a great option for those coming Upstate from NYC because it’s only an hour from the city. And even better, admission to the festival is completely free, making this an awesome festival for families to attend. AppleFest has been named the best fall festival by Hudson Valley Magazine , and you could easily spend the entire day here because of all the activities offered.

At AppleFest, you’ll find over 200 craft vendors, tons of food vendors, live music, a carnival for the kids, an apple pie contest (where you can buy slices from the participants!) and a farmer’s market. Visitors will also be able to stroll through Warwick’s charming downtown.

The Sharon Springs Harvest Festival usually takes place in mid-September each year, and the town was made famous by the Beekman Boys, and their shop, Beekman 1802. In town, you’ll also find the Beekman 1802 flagship boutique, which is absolutely stunning and worth popping into.

Location Tip : Sharon Springs is just under an hour from Indian Ladder Farms, and many apple varieties will be at their peak picking time during the Harvest Festival.

25. WalktoberFest Makers & Farmers Market (Hudson Valley)

WalktoberFest Makers & Farmers Market is especially fun because it takes place on the Walkway Over the Hudson & Hudson Valley Rail Trail, so the scenery is going to be lovely. The event usually takes place the first weekend in October, and over 120 local restaurants, distilleries, wineries, breweries and artists will line the walkways offering tastings and samples, as well as feature their artwork. There’s also a designated children’s area to make it a family outing.

26. Fishkill Farms Harvest Festival (Hudson Valley)

The Fishkill Farms Harvest Festival takes place every weekend from mid-September through October, and this is a great festival to attend if you want to pack all your favorite fall activities into one festival.

There’s something for everyone in the family at this one.

The Lake George Oktoberfest & Fall Festival usually takes place on Columbus Day weekend each year, and you’ll be able to find a true German-inspired Oktoberfest and Bavarian street fair celebration, complete with Bratwursts, a beer garden, German polka music, carnival rides and tons more. And since this event is in Lake George, you’ll also be able to stroll through the adorable alpine-inspired downtown to visit the local shops and eateries. And of course, don’t forget to take in the gorgeous Mirror Lake views.

This New York State Region Is One of the Best Places to Go in 2022 — With Wineries, Waterfalls, and Charming Hotels

We've heard it's 'gorges.'

Jessica Ritz is a Los Angeles-based journalist with a professional background in architectural history and historic preservation. Her design, culture, food, and travel articles have appeared in Architectural Digest , Travel + Leisure , Metropolis , and Los Angeles Times , among other publications.

The Best Times to Visit the Finger Lakes

The best things to do in the finger lakes.

  • Visiting the Finger Lakes' Waterfalls

The Best Hotels in the Finger Lakes

Camping in the finger lakes, the best restaurants in the finger lakes.

Named one of the best places to travel in 2022 by Travel + Leisure editors, the Finger Lakes region in central New York maintains a distinct identity. The "centrally isolated" geographic positioning of FLX, as it's been dubbed in recent years, means denizens take great pride and intentionally invest in this dispersed assortment of towns and sites full of rich, diverse histories. Ever since Ukrainian immigrant Dr. Konstantin Frank planted his first vitis vinifera vines in 1958 on 188 sloping acres along western Keuka Lake, the Finger Lakes' profile as a wine region has quietly been on the rise. A new generation of restaurants and hotels is evolving into a robust hospitality ecosystem, making the range of Finger Lakes experiences on offer better than ever.

From the base of the 1848 women's rights convention in Seneca Falls that catalyzed the suffrage movement to a comprehensive Native American heritage site and Harriet Tubman's home in Auburn, history buffs can investigate pressing questions related to the past and present. Nature lovers can explore the famed, glacially formed gorges and waterfalls and astonishingly scenic vistas around the 11 slender bodies of water — the largest three of which are Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga — located roughly in the triangle formed by the cities of Rochester, Syracuse, and Corning. Food and beverage enthusiasts can sate themselves touring the Finger Lakes' wineries (there are more than 100) and delving into the impressive culinary scene rooted in elevating local and seasonal ingredients.

The seasons express themselves intensely and fully in the Finger Lakes. With the exception of active winter sports destinations like Greek Peak Mountain Resort and Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua, winter travel is a niche preference that comes with challenges, namely, an obscene amount of lake-effect snow. (This climate, however, accounts for the world-class rieslings and other varietal wines that thrive in low temperatures.) Unsurprisingly, summer and fall are glorious. Both seasons allow for long hikes followed by invigorating swims, whether in a lake or waterfall, and vendors' stalls are piled high with colorful organic summer produce at the Ithaca Farmers Market . Fall ushers in the grape harvest and technicolor displays of fall foliage as the school year gets underway at Cornell University and other school campuses in the area.

Ambitious outdoors adventurers can consult the Finger Lakes Trail website for routes, itineraries, and other resources related to the 950-plus-mile-long network. Letchworth State Park , a.k.a. "the Grand Canyon of the East," contains myriad opportunities for adventure, from cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter to whitewater rafting and hot air balloon rides. Letchworth State Park is also home to the Autism Nature Trail , an innovative, neurodiverse-inclusive program.

For trails of a different sort, FLX has five established wine trails to help guide visitors eager to investigate the wineries around Canandaigua, Seneca, Cayuga, and Keuka lakes. If making your own itinerary, don't miss the tasting rooms of FLX OG winemakers Hermann J. Weimer Vineyard and the aforementioned Dr. Frank . And for a sense of how the art and science of wine has evolved here beyond the better-known (deservedly so) winter-friendly rieslings, labels such as Heart and Hands , Forge Cellars , and Red Tail Ridge Winery are making impressive strides with crafting red wines using FLX-grown pinot noir and cabernet franc, among other varietals.

Beyond the fruit of the vine, the Rochester/Finger Lakes Craft Beverage Trail highlights breweries, cider houses, and distilleries that have kicked into high gear in recent years, primarily in Ontario County. The world of cider is quite compelling, as visitors to Finger Lakes Cider House in Interlaken on Cayuga Lake quickly learn. The rustic-chic dining room also serves an outstanding menu with views of the Good Life Farm and the lake beyond. From its Seneca Drums gin to McKenzie whiskeys, Finger Lakes Distilling has put the region on the map for spirits production using locally sourced grains and fruits.

Outstanding among the other unique cultural institutions in FLX is the Corning Museum of Glass . The sprawling facility is an immersive look into the fascinating intersections of craft, art, and design, along with American industrial history. The glass company's unrivaled collection starts with ancient specimens and continues through contemporary cutting-edge art, while the institution pushes the medium forward through its education, research, and artist residency programs .

Finally, for a water-oriented outing toward the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes, the town of Skaneateles, at the northern tip of its namesake lake, is another enchanting destination. Book a cruise with Mid-Lakes Navigation , which offers cocktail and dinner cruises aboard different vessels.

Visiting the Finger Lakes' Waterfalls

"Ithaca is Gorges" is a well-known tourism motto and easy conversation starter when spotted outside of the town itself. This geologic feature is certainly worth bragging about and makes the surrounding area one of the most stunning destinations for hiking and swimming in naturally formed channels. Download the Ithaca Waterfalls Challenge digital passport to keep track of its 22 waterfalls and other natural attractions, from the more gentle slopes of Buttermilk Falls and Buttermilk Creek to the diving board perched over a deep swimming hole at Robert Treman State Park . The 215-foot waterfall drop at Taughannock Falls in Trumansburg is a perfect Kodak — OK, Instagram — moment.

Watkins Glen State Park near the southern tip of Seneca Lake merits dedicating several hours in order to extensively hike the dramatic trails that hug the glen and take in the breathtaking sight of its 19 waterfalls. (Much of the ingenious infrastructure here and at other nearby sites that carefully respect their contexts were built under the aegis of agencies created during the New Deal.) And the options are plentiful, since FLX counts over 200 waterfalls.

The Inns of Aurora on Cayuga Lake is a community and hospitality passion project from native Pleasant Rowland, founder of the American Girl empire. The five unique luxury properties that make up the Inns of Aurora each convey their own aesthetic and atmosphere (most are landmarked historic structures). The newest inn is the restored Zabriskie House, which blends retro styling with selections from Rowland's modern art collection and features 11 guest rooms. Inns of Aurora also has a brand-new wellness center, an on-site Ayurvedic counselor, a demonstration kitchen where guests can take cooking classes, and two restaurants.

The ultra-chic Lake House on Canandaigua signaled a shift in the FLX hospitality scene when its 125 guest rooms and suites in the re-envisioned retreat debuted in summer 2020. Third-generation family owners who operate the design firm Post Company (formerly Studio Tack) and development arm Brooklyn Home Company breathed new life into the site-sensitive buildings with a fresh take on understated, contemporary luxury. TLEE Spas designed the comprehensive wellness program at the Lake Houses's Willowbrook Spa , which opened in summer 2021.

Whether it's for a classic cocktail at Bar Argos , an evening with friends in the funky, welcoming Argos Warehouse outdoor lounge, or an overnight stay at the Argos Inn , any or all of these plans provide a taste of Ithaca's eclectic character. The creative reimagining of this historic house has been adapted into a modern bed-and-breakfast where no two spaces are alike.

Firelight Camps , situated just a short drive outside of Ithaca, is the best of both worlds, allowing guests to be close to nature but with the all stylish and creature comforts of a well-designed, modern, bohemian-inflected glamping site. Another perk: co-owner Emma Frisch's culinary expertise makes this your-not-so-typical camping excursion.

The camping options in the Finger Lakes run the gamut and can accommodate anyone, from camping veterans to novices. The Corning KOA Resort south of Watkins Glen splits the difference, with a campground and deluxe cabins, plus a pool and waterslide. Sampson Park at Seneca Lake Resorts in the town of Romulus (one of the many whose names evoke Greek and Roman history) hosts campers, cabin dwellers, and RV drivers. The New York State Parks system operates camping areas with fewer frills but no less awe-inspiring settings, including the Taughannock Falls , Watkins Glen , and Robert H. Treman State Park campgrounds.

Elevated homeyness of the best sort sets the tone at Hazelnut Kitchen in downtown Trumansburg. The menu is both sophisticated and hearty, whether you opt for fresh fish or a New York strip steak served with fries and caramelized onions. Alternately, the kitchen designs a tasting experience based on whatever is in season, and it's well worth trying if you're an adventurous diner.

F.L.X. Table in Geneva takes an experimental yet highly convivial approach to hospitality, curating prix-fixe menus designed for intimate groups of diners. This venture is part of master sommelier Christopher Bates and restaurant industry pro Isabel Bogadtke's ambitious F.L.X. Hospitality group, which operates multiple concepts including the Quincy Exchange in Corning's Gaffer District, F.L.X. Weinery in Dundee on Seneca Lake, and Roc Brewing Co in Rochester.

The Moosewood restaurant became a quasi-household — yet still niche — name thanks to its iconic, best-selling vegetarian cookbooks. Now, the physical space that launched an institution back in 1973 is onto its next chapter, under new ownership. Ithaca native Danica Wilcox, whose mother was a longtime member of the Moosewood collective, has revamped the beloved restaurant, located on the ground floor of downtown Ithaca's Dewitt Mall , as of early 2022. She and her team kept the warm, comforting touchstones of the space and the spirit of the menu intact, while evolving the food and beverage program to engage with the community and host events including FLX-focused wine tastings with local experts.

The laid-back vibe at Ithaca Beer Co. , home to award-winning brews like Flower Power and Apricot Wheat, make its brewery and taproom outside of town an easy pleasure. When the weather permits, the idyllic arrangement, with views of rolling green meadows and outdoor games, is ideal for families and large groups. Tasting flights pair seamlessly with the menu that's heavy on top-notch comfort food and bar classics.

The Stonecat Cafe in Hector reflects the best of FLX unconventional quirkiness, serving unpretentious, high-quality fare paired with a local wine and cocktail list. Visitors can also book a stay on the property.

morgan spurlock

Morgan Spurlock , a documentary filmmaker who captured his own psychological and physical symptoms from eating McDonald’s every day for a month in the Oscar-nominated 2004 feature “ Super Size Me ,” died Thursday in upstate New York due to complications of cancer. He was 53.

Spurlock’s family confirmed his death.

“It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan,” says Craig Spurlock, who worked with his brother on several projects. “Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas and generosity. Today the world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”

Popular on Variety

“Super Size Me” captured the zeitgeist when it released in 2004, grossing $22 million at the global box office and sparking a conversation about how the fast food industry encourage poor nutrition among the general public. McDonald’s discontinued its “super-size” option in the time following its release. Though the doc is still utilized as an educational aide in some school health classes, it has also sparked debate over its accuracy in the years since, with some criticism citing Spurlock refusing to publicly share his diet log from filming. Spurlock later disclosed that he struggled with alcohol abuse — a factor that some consider would’ve been a likely influence on the doc’s conclusions regarding liver dysfunction.

Born Nov. 7, 1970, in Parkersburg, W. Va., Spurlock was raised under the Methodist faith, though he identified as agnostic later in life. He graduated with a BFA in film from New York University in 1993.

In December 2017, as the #MeToo movement continued to gain traction, Spurlock wrote a lengthy social media post saying he was “part of the problem.” In the post, he admitted to serial infidelities and said he had settled an allegation of sexual harassment from a former assistant. He also said he had been accused of rape in college. The post effectively ended Spurlock’s documentary career, as Spurlock stepped down from Warrior Poets shortly after.

Spurlock is survived by his two children, Laken and Kallen; mother, Phyllis Spurlock; father Ben (Iris); brothers Craig (Carolyn) and Barry (Buffy); multiple nieces and nephews; and former spouses, Alexandra Jamieson and Sara Bernstein.
