Some people of my age (82) want to try Parachuting, Bungee Jumping or some other daring pursuit while still on this planet but my greatest wish was to go to a live concert of that amazing band, The National!
I was so lucky to be in Brighton last Saturday (7th Dec) to have my wish granted and the whole experience was fantastic - they even played my very favourite song, ‘Light Years’. The song list was well chosen, full of contrast in mood and tempo and the audience responded happily to singing Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks!
Our group included three generations, myself, two daughters and a granddaughter, all National fans.
The Brighton Centre is an excellent venue and the audience was so receptive and enthusiastic. I think Matt himself must have realised that, considering his many ventures down to the front row. At one point, he stumbled and my younger daughter held out her hands to steady him - unfortunately he stood on her toes but all is forgiven, Matt!
Report as inappropriate
I had heard they were a life changing show prior to going, but I was skeptical due to how hyperbolic people tend to be about that kind of thing, but HOLY SHIT.
They had a bit of a rocky start, but once they got their groove on (and Beringer got sufficiently drunk) 2-3 songs in, it was one of the most surreal shows I've ever had the pleasure of attending.
their music is often noted for being a bit mellow, but this show couldn't be less so. when it they weren't reaching swans-level volumes with songs like Mr November, they were delivering some satisfyingly visceral takes on classics like "Don't Swallow the Cap" or "Fake Empire"
seriously, though, this show was insane & I highly recommend seeing them to anyone if they're in your area.
They are absolutely incredible live. Between Matt's shrieking during The Pull of You and the intensity of Bryce and Aaron during rockers like Day I Die (during which Matt waded deep into the crowd) and System, this was certainly not a boring affair! Even the quieter numbers (Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks, Light Years, etc) had a coiled intensity. Matt is super funny on stage, telling clever anecdotes and giving away the mic stand at the end of the concert. The only caveat to the performance was that the whole field reeked of weed, so strong it was making me and my SO sick. Most of the fans just stood there smoking instead of actually having fun and dancing. The band itself was awesome though!

1. Location
The National Gallery of Ireland is located on Merrion Square West, Dublin 2, south of the River Liffey. It’s a 3-minute walk from Merrion Square , an 8-minute walk from Trinity College and an 11-minute walk from St Stephen’s Green .

4. A fine spot to spend a rainy afternoon

About the National Gallery of Ireland
The National Gallery of Ireland is the finest of the many art galleries in Dublin for good reason, but where did it all begin?!
When the railway magnate William Dargan organised and underwrote an art exhibition in 1853, it proved so popular it was decided to set up a permanent public art collection in Dublin.
The building was completed and opened to the public in 1864. When it opened its door, there was no established collection, and it only had 112 paintings, but an annual purchase grant was set up, and a substantial donation by the Dowager Countess of Milltown resulted in the building of a further wing.
Other contributors included Hugh Lane , who left a substantial number of paintings and part of his estate and George Bernard Shaw, who left a third of the royalties from his estate in thanks for the time he’d spent at the gallery as a youngster.
The gallery needed further extension in 1962, and it was granted the paintings given to the nation by Chester Beatty in 1978.
Other acquisitions include paintings by Picasso and Jack B Yeats. In the 1990s, a lost Caravaggio, The Taking of Christ, was discovered in a Jesuit house of study in Dublin and was exhibited in the gallery.
Things to see and do at the National Gallery of Ireland
One of the reasons that a visit here is one of the best things to do in Dublin is due to the volume of things to see and do.
Below, you’ll find info on the various collections and displays, along with what areas to look out for while you’re there.
1. The National Art Collection
Photo by James Fennell via Ireland’s Content Pool
There are more than 16,300 works of art in the National Art Collection, which spans the history of Western European art from the beginning of the 14th century to the present day, with artists such as Mantegna, Titian, Monet and Picasso represented.
As well as paintings, prints and drawings, sculptures, photography, archival and bibliographical materials are there too.
2. The Gallery archive
Photo courtesy Cathy Wheatley via Ireland’s Content Pool
If you’re interested in the history of the gallery, the Gallery archive holds the official records for the institution, including detailed archives about how it came to be established and the books that record the minutes of the board meetings.
There are also records that depict the development of the collection, registering when paintings, prints and sculptures were acquired, and papers about the Gallery’s directors and staff. Archive three contains an architectural plan of the building.
3. The collections most popular pieces
There are many highlights in the National Gallery, reflecting the enormous range of styles and fashions in art. Caravaggio’s The Taking of Christ, painted in 1602, depicts the moment Judas identifies Christ by kissing him so that the temple guards can seize him.
The painting is extraordinary because it offered a new visual approach to the biblical story thanks to its close-up on the figures and the use of dark and light contrast. In addition, the Degas picture, Two Ballet Dancers in a Dressing Room, painted about 1880 is a visitor favourite.
The richly coloured pastel shows the ballerinas at rest just before they go on stage. A Ship Against the Mewstone by Turner was painted circa 1814 and is well-known for its lifelike depiction of the waves that toss the boat, the Mewstone a dramatic natural feature near Plymouth that claimed many lives over the centuries.
4. National Portrait Collection
The National Portrait Collection was set up in 1875 and has grown substantially in the years since, with paintings, drawings, watercolours and sculptures added, representing prominent Irish people who have contributed to Ireland’s civic, social and cultural life.
The gallery runs an annual portrait prize, which has also contributed to the collection. One recent addition is the portrait of writer Edna O’Brien by Mandy O’Neill, the winner of the Zurich Portrait Prize in 2018. Theatre directors, dramatists, poets and others are all featured in the collection.
5. Painting and Sculpture
As you might expect of a gallery in Ireland, many local treasures make up the collection, including the much-loved The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife by Maclise and The Meeting on the Turret Stairs by Burton.
Other Irish artists include Barry, Hamilton, Henry, Hone, Leech, Osborne, O’Conor and Orpen. There are more than 380 sculptures, including busts of notable Irish figures.
6. The Yeats Archive
Jack B Yeats’ niece Anne donated the prestigious collection of work to the National Gallery in 1996, and it includes the artist’s sketchbooks, covering more than 50 years of his career.
It contains books from his library, a journal collection, original manuscripts and theatre programmes and his easel. There is also material relating to other Yeats family members, such as WB, John Butler Yeats, his sisters Susan, Elizabeth, and Anne.
Places to visit near the National Gallery of Ireland
There’s endless places to visit a short stroll from the National Gallery of Ireland, from more museums and art galleries to quirky tours and more.
Below, you’ll find everywhere, from the Long Room Library and one of the finest parks in Dublin to old-school pubs.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Ireland
Incredible trip. Very well planned. Helpful and accommodations where spectacular. Don't worry about luggage!
This was my first time in Ireland. I absolutely loved everything about this trip. Tour guide and bus driver were amazing. Totally worth every penny. Would go back in a heartbeat
I had an incredible week on the Overland Great Atlantic Adventure tour! I went as a solo traveller in my 20s and, despite being nervous at first as the rest of the group were all travelling in pairs, had the best experience I could’ve asked for. We all had a great time together - I found the tour perfect for couples, family, friends and solo travellers alike. Our tour guide David was amazing, very kind, friendly and knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure the tour worked for everyone. If you join an Overland tour, you’ll be lucky to have David as your guide, he’s the best! All of the B&Bs/hotels were of great quality with breakfast included every day. The van is very comfortable and has plenty of space for a small group, much better than a huge coach full of 60 people (in my opinion). There was a fair bit of driving but it is inevitable with how much ground is covered. The places we visited and activities were all incredible. The only slight negative I have is that sometimes there were activities on the itinerary that we simply didn’t have time for - e.g. a 2.5 hour hike at the cliffs of moher, and with so much packed in you really don’t get much time to see some places. For example, we arrived in Westport around 7:30pm and left before 9am the next morning, but again that is inevitable with so much packed into such a short space of time. My highlights of the trip were kayaking in Dingle (I absolutely loved Dingle in general and am very glad we had 2 nights there) as well as climbing Croagh Patrick on our last day! The climb was tough but I would definitely recommend it if you’re able - an amazing experience. All in all I’m so glad I booked this trip and truly had the time of my life, I would definitely recommend Overland!

Rory McIlroy’s time off ‘exactly what he should be doing,’ PGA Tour commissioner says

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — No hard feelings, Rory.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said he understands why Rory McIlroy withdrew from the Travelers Championship — the final signature event on the calendar — to recover from a late-Sunday meltdown at the U.S. Open .
“Sometimes you just need to focus on what you need,” Monahan said on Wednesday, a day before the tournament at TPC River Highlands outside of Hartford. “And that’s what he’s doing and that’s exactly what he should be doing because that’s what he thinks is the right path.”
McIlroy twice had a one-shot lead at Pinehurst No. 2 before he bogeyed three of the last four holes, missing a pair of par putts from inside 4 feet. Instead of McIlroy’s fifth major championship — and his first in 10 years — Bryson DeChambeau claimed his second .
On Monday, McIlroy said on social media that he would be taking three weeks off to “build myself back up.” He is planning to return July 10-13 for the Scottish Open, where he is the defending champion, followed by the British Open the following week at Royal Troon in Scotland.
Without him, there will be 71 players teeing off on Thursday in the limited field, no-cut signature event at the TPC River Highlands. McIlroy is the only one in the top eight in the world ranking or the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings who will miss it.
“You look at the quality of the field that we have this week, we’re going to have a great Travelers Championship,” Monahan said. “And I’m looking forward to getting Rory back in Scotland.”
Enemy territory
The Travelers Championship is the one week of the year that Keegan Bradley has bragging rights over world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
Not only is Bradley the defending champion at the TPC River Highlands, but the native New Englander can remind his Texan rival how the NBA Finals turned out. Bradley’s Boston Celtics beat Scheffler’s Dallas Mavericks in a Game 5 clincher on Monday night.
Asked about arriving in Celtics country so soon after Boston won its unprecedented 18th NBA championship, Scheffler joked, “Do I have to answer that question?” Scheffler said he hasn’t heard any razzing on the course but one fan asked him to sign a Celtics hat.
He declined.
“I don’t blame him,” Bradley said. “I wouldn’t want to either if I was a Dallas fan.”
Bradley grew up in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts as a fervid Boston sports fan and married the niece of baseball Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk. At a Fenway Park news conference last fall to introduce the local franchise in the new, high-tech TGL circuit, he described the thrill of seeing the Red Sox clubhouse and giving Englishman Tyrrell Hatton a tour of the ballpark.
The Travelers presented Bradley with one of Fenway’s wooden seats at the tournament’s media day in April.
“It’s one of the coolest gifts I’ve ever gotten — probably the coolest gift I’ve ever gotten in my life,” he said. “To have a seat from Fenway Park in your house is pretty spectacular.”
Paris preview
The Travelers will feature 22 players out of the 60 who have qualified for the Paris Olympics , including all four Americans: Scheffler, defending gold medalist Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa.
Others include Ludvig Aberg (Sweden), Viktor Hovland (Norway), Hideki Matsuyama (Japan) and Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood and Matthew Fitzpatrick. Although they will be playing for their countries, the Olympics is a 72-hole, stroke-play tournament will award medals to the individuals with the low scores.
“There is no team aspect of it. It would be cool if there was,” said Morikawa, who finished fourth in Tokyo, losing in a seven-man, sudden-death playoff for the bronze medal on the fourth extra hole. “Caddies are definitely going to scout the course together, they’re going to do you all the prep together, a lot of sharing information, just as if it were a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup kind of in that sense. But when it comes down to it on Thursday, it’s our event, it’s our own individual event.”
That doesn’t mean there’s no patriotism involved.
“I’m not necessarily going to go out and try to play too many practice rounds with somebody from a different country,” said Scheffler, who will be making his Olympic debut and confessed he hadn’t really thought about it. “We’re trying to go over there and earn a medal for the USA so it will probably be a closer-knit circle as we go over there.”
The rankings to determine Olympic spots were finalized with the conclusion of the U.S. Open. Countries are limited to two players, unless their third- and fourth-best players are ranked within the top 15 in the world.
Golf was in the Olympics early in the last century before it was dropped from the program for more than 100 years. It returned in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, making this the third go-round.
Scheffler said he is excited to be a part of the Summer Games and check out other sports, including basketball and tennis. He also wanted to make a trip to the Olympic Village to watch the other athletes train.
“I grew up playing a ton of sports, and so to be able to see the best in the world at their craft would be pretty special,” he said.

Really enjoyed our trip to the National Stud (wish we had something similar in England!). Luke was an excellent and knowledgable tour guide. Highlight was meeting the retired legends (especially Faugheen!) and being able to wander about and see the size of the stud. Obviously not many horses about because of the time of year but still excellent. The Japanese garden was quite small but like a maze so felt much bigger. Definitely recommend a trip if you’re that way, and very reasonably priced!

A fabulous layout, the gardens are intricate and interesting. There are lots of fun surprises in the layout of the Japanese gardens too, we had small children with us and they were safe and able for all the steps and climbs. I would say some of it isn’t suitable for prams or wheelchairs but a lot of the grounds are. The plant diversity was wonderful. The food in the cafe on the grounds is more dinner food, it is quite expensive but the portions are big and the food is well worth it. The staff are polite and the cafe and grounds are very clean.
The place is amazing. Relaxing place to be with plenty benches around. Beautiful Japanese Garden Unfortunately some people don’t respect this place by throwing trash on the grass and leaving paper cups around.
Beautiful grounds to walk and the cafe on site has lovely food too. Great for a nice day out, very tranquil and relaxing place to be. Plenty of benches to sit down and enjoy the wildlife and scenery. Really great spot, ample parking too

Great family day out. Despite being very busy, full car park and overflow, it never felt crowded. Lots to do and see, great value for a family of 5. We’ll be back.

Have seen Halloween event for free if you buy day entry. Avail it but wasn’t able to come on time 11am-3pm for the Halloween event. But the place itself was very nice for a family day out. They have horses out , fairy trail , big long walks , Japanese gardens , playgrounds and cafe when you come in the end of your walk and have a cafe near the playground too. Highly recommended to wear rain boats for the kids on our weather lately. They have guided tours too . I think they have more just didn’t suited our kids age. Check out website for more information about the tours . 😊

Well I think it was a good idea to go here early on a Monday as it beat the late risers and some school tours..it’s 14 euro entrance fee and 11 euro if you’re an old ager..I took a guided tour around the Stud Farm which was very enlightening..and then had lunch in the restaurant..food was very nice and tasty and reasonably priced and staff were very helpful ..I finished off with a walk around the Japanese gardens which is always relaxing
Gardens are amazing, nice afternoon spent wandering about, taking pictures and having a picnic, the Japanese Gardens were especially good. Beautiful flowers and trees and the intricate walkways were lots of fun for adults and kids alike. National stud was interesting too. Great day out for all the family.

Stunning horse stud & gardens
Easy to get from the M7 (exit 13) and great parking availability which is free / not chargeable.
The grounds & Gardens are so well kept and it’s very scenic.
Extremely nice place to go for a walk and to appreciate the horses on site, but also the amazing gardens including the Japanese styled gardens.
They also have a cafe/restaurant here and they also offer tours at different times.
Definitely would recommend to see this amazing estate. 👍

Leigh-Anne announces first ever solo UK and Ireland tour for October 2024
"I couldn't hold this one in any longer - I'm doing some MORE shows later this year"
Former Little Mix singer Leigh-Anne has confirmed she will embark on her first headline tour in venues across the UK and Ireland this October. Find ticket details below.
Having recently performed an intimate headline show at London’s Lafayette , the former Little Mix member has expressed her excitement as she begins her solo career and plays additional dates this autumn.
“I couldn’t hold this one in any longer – I’m doing some MORE shows later this year including one at the legendary KOKO in London,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I’m so excited to see you all so sooooon!”
The new tour dates come on the heels of the release of recent single ‘Stealin’ Love ‘, the first in a collection of songs she’s set to release soon.
Leigh-Anne’s upcoming UK and Ireland headline tour dates are below. Tickets are on sale now and available here .
OCTOBER 25 – Dublin, Academy Green Room 27 – Birmingham, O2 Institute 2 28 – London, KOKO 29 – Manchester, Club Academy

While hinting about a possible debut solo album last year, she opened up about the rocky transition to becoming a solo artist, saying: “It’s incredible what Little Mix have done and what we’ve achieved, we’ve absolutely killed it. But now I am on my own and not all of the Little Mix fans are going to come along with me, I have to build a new fan base. Yeah, so I do feel like a new artist to some extent…”
In a more recent statement, Leigh-Anne shared that she had been “dying to do a show of my own for the longest time” and was looking forward to bringing her latest project, ‘No Hard Feelings’ to the stage.
“London holds so many special moments & memories for me so it felt fitting to start here,” she said of last week’s (June 11) show. “So before we announce any more shows I wanted to stay true to my home city and do something intimate with my legion. I can’t wait to see you all!”
The singer has previously shed light on the strain of being in a band, revealing in memoir Believe that Jesy Nelson’s exit from Little Mix was so tumultuous that the remaining members sought therapy after her “traumatic” departure .

Buttigieg tours Mississippi civil rights site and says transportation is key to equity in the US
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has toured the home of assassinated civil rights leader Medgar Evers in Mississippi’s capital city
JACKSON, Miss. — Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Friday toured the home of assassinated civil rights leader Medgar Evers in Mississippi’s capital city, saying afterward that transportation is important to securing equity and justice in the United States.
“Disparities in access to transportation affect everything else — education, economic opportunity, quality of life, safety,” Buttigieg said.
Buttigieg spent Thursday and Friday in Mississippi, his first trip to the state, to promote projects that are receiving money from a 2021 federal infrastructure act. One is a planned $20 million improvement to Medgar Evers Boulevard in Jackson, which is a stretch of U.S. Highway 49.
Evers’ daughter, Reena Evers-Everette, talked to Buttigieg about growing up in the modest one-story home that her family moved into in 1956 — about how she and her older brother would put on clean white socks and slide on the hardwood floors after their mother, Myrlie, waxed them.
It’s the same home where Myrlie Evers talked to her husband, the Mississippi NAACP leader, about the work he was doing to register Black voters and to challenge the state’s strictly segregated society.
Medgar Evers had just arrived home in the early hours of June 12, 1963, when a white supremacist fatally shot him, hours after President John F. Kennedy delivered a televised speech about civil rights.
After touring the Evers home, Buttigieg talked about the recent anniversary of the assassination. He also noted that Friday marked 60 years since Ku Klux Klansmen ambushed and killed three civil rights workers — Michael Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman — in Neshoba County, Mississippi, as they were investigating the burning of a Black church.
“As we bear the moral weight of our inheritance, it feels a little bit strange to be talking about street lights and ports and highway funding and some of the other day-to-day transportation needs that we are here to do something about,” Buttigieg said.
Yet, he said equitable transportation has always been “one of the most important battlegrounds of the struggle for racial and economic justice and civil rights in this country.”
Buttigieg said Evers called for a boycott of gas stations that wouldn’t allow Black customers to use their restrooms, and Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama.
U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, who toured sites in his Mississippi district with Buttigieg, said the majority-Black city of Jackson has been “left out of so many funding opportunities” for years, while money to expand roads has gone to more affluent suburbs. He called the $20 million a “down payment” toward future funding.
“This down payment will fix some of the problems associated with years of neglect — potholes, businesses that have closed because there’s no traffic,” Thompson said.
Thompson is the only Democrat representing Mississippi in Congress and is the only member of the state’s U.S. House delegation who voted for the infrastructure bill. Buttigieg also said Mississippi Republican U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker voted for it.
