Here is what's in store for you

This private wine tour will allow you to discover Montalcino, a small village famous for producing Brunello wine, one of the most prestigious red wines in Tuscany.

Departing from Florence, you will drive through the stunning Tuscan countryside of South Siena for a splendid day of sightseeing and wine tasting. Admire the breathtaking scenery while you reach Montalcino – cypress trees, fields, and livestock with extraordinary combinations of green, grey, and brown. The famous Brunello wine is produced here with the local Sangiovese grapes. Every activity in the town revolves around wine production.

Walk in Piazza del Popolo in the town center and Palazzo dei Priori nearby, a building from the 1300s. Three churches here worth a visit, built between the 13th and 15th centuries: Sant’Agostino, Sant’Egidio, and the Cathedral. From the towers of Montalcino’s large fortress, there is a splendid view of the surrounding Orcia and Arbia valleys. Beyond southern Tuscany, catch a glimpse of the beginning of the region of Latium.

Brunello wine is one of the finest and most prestigious wines produced in the whole world. Your second stop will be a typical Brunello winery, where you'll learn all about the ancient roots of the winery. Discover the history and origins of Brunello and other wines produced by the estate. Walk through vineyards and cellars. Finally, end your visit with a tasting of 2/3 wines and learn how to enjoy and appreciate excellence.

Montalcino also offers many options to taste a selection of local, traditional recipes. Delicious fresh pasta with savory sauces, wild mushrooms soup, pici pasta with meat sauce, ravioli stuffed with ricotta cheese, roasted meats, wild boar in a casserole, fresh vegetables…the list goes on!

In the solitary Valle d’Orcia is located the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, one of Italy's most beautiful Romanesque monastic monuments. Legend has it that Emperor Charlemagne founded it in 781. It is said that on their way back from Rome along the ancient road Via Francigena, most of the Emperor’s army came down with the plague. When the Emperor’s prayers were answered and the pestilence ceased, he founded the Abbey.

If desired and time allows it, after your visit to Sant’Antimo your driver can bring you to another winery for a second wine tasting paired with local products famous all over the world (An additional 40€ for a tasting of 2/3 wines).

Private tours, montalcino wine and history.

Perfectly preserved, fully fortified medieval hilltown with a fairytale castle Montalcino is the home of world-famous Brunello red wine. Immersing in the picturesque Val d’Orcia, this unique village gives its visitors the opportunity to enjoy some of the top-quality wines on the market observing the breathtaking beauty of this marvelous area.

Montalcino hasn’t practically changed its look since the 16th century. In the 1400’s the town became rich for its fine red wines, but the priceless recipe of Brunello was invented by its author Ferruccio Biondi Santi only at the end of the 19th century.

Montalcino Wine Tasting Tour

Made purely of Sangiovese grapes, the Brunello di Montalcino has become a “younger brother” of the Moscadello di Montalcino, sweet white wine produced in this region. Having been awarded at the Agrarian Exhibition of Montepulciano in 1869 Brunello for the first time was officially recognized as high-quality wine. Very soon it had become the favorite Tuscan red of many wine lovers.

Before this wine can be legally labelled Brunello it must age for at least 2 years in oak barrel and 4 months in bottle, but most producers still follow the traditional aging period of 5 years before releasing it to the market since to fully appreciate this wine it should age even longer, as it is only after at least 10 or 15 years that its unique qualities reveal to the maximum. During your private or small group Montalcino wine tour you will sample different vintages of this King of the Wines to understand and enjoy how the quality features of Brunello increase with time. The long aging period required for Brunello is one of the key elements that makes it so different from those other wines not suitable for aging because of their composition.

Reviews about us

Me and my group were extremely happy with every tour. We used Tuscany wine tours twice during our May trip. The drivers were very kind and hospitable throughout the time together, they were helpful in giving us information and setting up lunches and wine tasting. Our experience with this company was 5*. Everything was just great and wouldn’t change a thing.

We had a very tight schedule for our only day in Tuscany and Tuscany wine tours was our only hope to allow us to visit the Chianti for a few hours and get to our cruise ship in Livorno later in the day. We had a group of 5 people and had reserved the minivan. This company truly made our single day in Tuscany perfect literally. I truly felt spoiled and will use them again if the opportunity arises.

Thank you for all the accommodations and last minute changes/requests. You made our vacation easy and stress free. We have fallen in love with Tuscany and we would recommend your services to anyone visiting Italy! And when my family and I come back, I will be sure to use your services again. Thank you for everything!

Chauffeured Tours in Montalcino

We take pride in offering you Montalcino wine tours with a private driver or as a part of a small group. In both cases you are going to visit 2-3 renowned wineries for the wine tasting, have a light lunch and enjoy the history and medieval beauty of the village as well as stunning landscapes of the surrounding territories where on the rolling hills vineyards alternate with wheat fields that play with the wind like green waves of an ocean. Climbing up the impressive Rocca of Montalcino built in the 14th century gives the opportunity to appreciate this area 360 degrees. On your day trip we also stop in Montepulciano for the Nobile di Montepulciano wine tasting. For those interested in Montalcino private wine tours there are no limitations and we can also suggest visiting of such sights among which the first option should be Pienza, the ideal Renaissance city commissioned by Pope Pius II to Bernardo Rossellino who was given carte blanche to express here the most advanced criterias of architecture of that magical period. We can gladly provide you with the services of Driver Guide if you enjoy richer cultural and historic information on your tour.

An afternoon visit to another top-rated Brunello winery will complete the tour. Usually, we combine a small family-owned business winery with a larger one, just to give you a broader view of what Montalcino and its wines have to offer.

Recommended for...

Brunello di Montalcino is a full-body wine and produced using only the Sangiovese Grosso grape. This elegant red wine is well appreciated mostly by those who love wines that are bold in flavor and rich in aroma. The wine tour departs from a central square of Florence's city and will take about 2 hours long to get to the Montalcino wine region so we recommend having a good breakfast in the morning. If the tour doesn't reach a minimum of 4 participants we will contact you with alternatives.

montalcino wine tour from florence

The perfect day to explore the  Brunello di Montalcino wine growing region! My friend and I vacationed in Italy and while in Florence took the Big Red tour.  Our host/guide Matteo was fabulous.  Not only, as a sommelier and Tuscan native,  was he able to teach us about the wines and their features, but he also gave us knowledge of the rich Tuscan heritage and food.   The wineries we visited were wonderful and the food we had at lunch was amazing.  A great day and highly recommended.

Pierpaolo was an awesome tour guide! We were fortunate to have him to ourselves that morning to lead this beautiful Brunello di Montalcino wine tour. Having his knowledge of not only the wines (he is on his way to becoming a sommelier) but the region, Italian history, and other fun facts really enriched our experience on the tour. We stopped at two Brunello wineries - one medium-sized and one smaller. It definitely helped that we had done other wine tours and tastings in the past, as Brunello is grown and aged with higher standards than most other wines. We learned a lot, and more deeply appreciate why Brunello is both so delicious but also more expensive than other wines imported here to the States. It will change your views on wine and allow you to appreciate them more. Also, the three-course lunch at the second winery was to die for! The fettuccine with boar and beef ragu was perfect. And the view was amazing as well. We hung out, sipped some wine, walking into the 'strawberry grape' room/ No further description, just do it. Worth the trip no matter how many days you are spending in the Tuscan area.

We recently took the Brunello Wine Tour with Italy and Wine. It was the best wine tour we have ever experienced! Matteo was our guide, and he was outstanding. He was friendly, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. All of the guides from Italy and Wine are sommeliers who will tailor your experience to your level of interest. We learned so much in our day with Matteo and visited three different wineries with different production methods which were so interesting. We had an incredible lunch at the second winery and tasted delicious wines and olive oils throughout the day. It was an unforgettable day! We highly recommend Italy and Wine!

My wife and I did the Brunello Montalcino wine tour leaving from Florence and had an amazing time! It was interesting getting to stop at a family-owned winery and also see a bigger more commercialized one and how they differ in production and size. The food on the tour was some of the best we’ve had in Italy and all the wines were top tier as well. Over guide, Pierpaolo was great and gave us some restaurant recommendations for after the tour which turned out to also be some of the best food we had in Florence! Would definitely book again!

  • Brunello wine tasting
  • Take in the breathtaking scenery as you enjoy a typical Tuscan lunch at one of the wineries.
  • Stroll through the picturesque medieval village of Montalcino on a short visit.

Description of the Brunello di Montalcino wine tour:

Brunello di Montalcino is a full bodied, structured, and complex red wine produced with 100% Sangiovese grapes. The wine is aged in oak barrels for five years before bottling.

One of the most famous wine regions of the world, the Montalcino area also produces Rosso di Montalcino . It’s considered the little brother of the Brunello, made from the same grapes, but aged for only one year. It’s a pleasant wine, lighter and less complex.

At the first winery we visit, you’ll meet one of the youngest organic Brunello producers, who will show you the process behind his wines, from the vineyard to the aging in oak barrels. It’s a fascinating story!

The second winery is a very famous one in Montalcino, where we’ll have a tasty homemade lunch, paired with at least four wines.

At the last winery, you’ll meet another young owner who will guide you inside his world of wine and other surprises.

You can read here what some of our clients had to say about our tours. Imagine what we could do for you!

My wife and I took Angie’s Castle & Wine tour in late May. We had a fun, small group with Barbara as our guide. Barbara was very genuine and truly expressed an interest in wanting all of us to enjoy our day, as well as our time in Tuscany Would I recommend the tour? Yes, without a doubt. If you are a red wine drinker, these are smaller producers that you are most likely not able to purchase in the U.S. They make excellent wines, so treat yourself and send some home Our wines arrived in four weeks. Grazie Mille Angie and Barbara for a terrific day!

We had an excellent wine and castle tour day. Federico was an exceptional guide and we had a wonderful time touring and tasting wine and olive oil. We would like to also mention the fantastic lunch we had it was memorable. We would highly recommend this tour.

An amazing day touring the Tuscany wine region! I would especially like to thank Francesca for making my 50th birthday a memory I will treasure forever! Her knowledge of wines, the countryside, olive oil, etc. was extraordinary! The wineries and the owners (Stephania and Marco) were excellent hosts and provided us with samples of the most amazing wines and olive oils. I would highly recommend your company to anyone visiting the Tuscany region! Again, thanks!!!

I went on a wine tasting tour with Angie a few years ago and because of the great experience I booked again for May 2013. Angie’s tour was already fully booked so we were in Olivia’s group, another awesome day! The whole region is beautiful and there are plenty of tour operators but for me Angie’s personal service and small groups make her the go-to company for your Tuscan wine tasting tour. A bonus with the smaller groups is that Angie takes you to small and medium sized wineries, not the giant mass production places, so you really get face to face time with the owner/winemakers.

Brunello Wine Tour and Montalcino from Florence

Brunello Wine Tour and Montalcino from Florence

Brunello Wine Tour and Montalcino from Florence. On this wonderful wine tour of Tuscany, we discover the outstanding Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most famous wines in the world.

We arrive in the land of Brunello by travelling along with one of the most panoramic routes of Tuscany, crossing the Chianti region and the Siena wine area.

You can expect a very private, non-touristic experience as we venture into the culture of the region to learn about winemaking directly from the farmers.

Departing from Florence with your professional and experienced guide by car or van, you will reach the famous town of Montalcino , a medieval village surrounded by beautiful hills, famous for Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino wine located in the heart of Val d’Orcia, in the southern part of Tuscany.

The first visit to the farm includes a tasting and a guided visit to a boutique winery, where you will learn about winemaking in the area as well as the specific processes involved in making Brunello wine . Also, enjoy a visit to the ancient underground cellars where all the traditional wooden barrels used to age the wines are kept.

You will then be escorted into town for a free visit to Montalcino and its charming and scenic streets and a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside hills.

The second part of the tour will take place in a Winery which has been run by the same family since 1865. Here we will enjoy a tour of the cellars guided by the owner and a multi-course Tuscan lunch with wine tasting, usually prepared with love by the “grandmother” of the family.

Experience the real Tuscany lifestyle!

  • Visit the town of Montalcino
  • Traditional Tuscan farm lunch
  • Taste excellent organic wines
  • Visit two family-run boutique wineries
  • Round trip transfer

The first family-run winery

The first family-run winery

Having reached the family-run winery in the heart of Montalcino, we enjoy the first guided tour to discover the long history and tradition of this small Brunello winemaker. We taste four different kinds of wine and we visit the cellars, learning something about the origin and production process of this amazing wine. A visit to this estate is an extraordinary journey into the world of Brunello. You will become familiar with the Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino wine through the tasting experience!

The historical town of Montalcino

The historical town of Montalcino

After the first visit to a Brunello winery, we take a walk in the charming and lovely streets of Montalcino. In the historical center, we can still see the fortress and the original defensive walls. In fact, this old village is one of the best-preserved examples of medieval architecture in the Val d’Orcia area. Strolling around the fascinating stone streets, we take a peek at the crafts shops, wine bars, cafes and much more.

The second estate

The second estate

We continue our tour to reach the second family-run winery. Here, the view opens onto the stunning valley of the vineyard hills. We sample some developing wine straight from the cask and taste Brunello DOCG and Rosso di Montalcino DOC together with an abundant traditional multi-course Tuscan lunch. This includes a starter with the main course, a dessert, and a cafè with a wine tasting of two/three different kinds of Brunello. It’s our aim to provide you with an authentic experience in the area of Montalcino.

Montalcino: A Wine Tasting Itinerary

The unmistakable flavor of brunello.

Wines to Taste & Vineyards to Visit

The Italians would surely cringe, but the story of Tuscan classic, Brunello wine, and the American classic, Coca Cola, have some striking similarities: both “invented” by pharmacists who both wanted a new and improved type of beverage. Of course, to sum-up Brunello as a “beverage” is a bit reductive.

Below we offer to take you on a tour of this Tuscan classic with a brief introduction to where the wine producing zone is situated, what constitutes a Brunello wine, and a list of vineyards that make for a great wine tasting itinerary. Once you have explored the area around Montalcino  and savored your first sip then you can judge for yourself if it is more than “just a beverage.”

Brunello Wine Itinerary near Montalcino

The Land of Rich & Plenty

Located less than 50 km south of Siena, the road to Montalcino passes through some of the most picturesque landscapes of Tuscany including the hills of the Val d’Orcia and the Creti Senesi .

The altitude and climate of the Montalcino region has provided an area where Sangiovese ripens more fully and consistently than anywhere else in Tuscany. These factors contribute to the body, color, extract and tannins commonly associated with Brunello di Montalcino.*

Positioned on a hilltop, the town of Montalcino dominates the valley with its medieval walls and the fortress from the late 1300s . It stretches to include the enchanting Abbey of Sant’Antimo to the south, with San Quirico just to the east of its borders and Bagno Petriolo just to the west.

The territory of Montalcino needs no coaxing to produce quality wines, in fact, archeological findings suggest that even the Etruscans were aware of the intrinsical delicious qualities of the land . The position permits ideal sun exposure which ripens the grapes perfectly for a product that is particularly suited to long periods of aging with a superior flavor, fragrance, and appearance.

The wine growing region of Montalcino covers 24,000 hectares and the square-shaped territory is bordered by the rivers Ombrone, Asso, and Orcia, however, only 15% (approximately 4,000 hectares) is cultivated with vineyards supporting over 200 producers!

What Makes a Wine worthy of the name Brunello

A fairly new “invention”, the Brunello wine was “created” in the mid-1800s after Clemente Santi decided to diversify the wine production in the area which concentrated mainly on a sweet white wine called Moscadello di Montalcino. His experiments resulted in a “bruno” or brown colored wine, thus the name Brunello.

It was in 1869 at the Agrarian Exhibition of Montepulciano that his wine, "a select red wine (Brunello) of 1865," was mentioned and received an award . For many, this is the date which marks the birth of the Brunello wines, standing out from other Sangiovese based wines due to its inclination towards longevity.

It quickly entered into the wine market becoming a worldwide symbol of quality "Made in Italy" .

Requirements

Brunello di Montalcino is made 100% from Sangiovese.

You really can’t get more basic than that. No other grapes are allowed in a Brunello wine , thus making it singular and different from the Chianti wines which require only 85% Sangiovese and permit a blend of other types of grapes.

In 1998, the requirements were set and these dictated that a Brunello wine be aged for 2 years and at least 4 months in a bottle before release on the market. Perhaps one of the unique characteristics of Brunello is, due to the climate and composition of the grape it is a wine high in tannins, and it actually requires aging ( sometimes up to 20 years ) before it is enjoyable to drink.  This is a striking difference to other wines, which are either not suitable for aging or are better when drunk "young".

What to expect when you taste a Brunello?

As the Italians would say, you should expect “un vino importante” in other words, a wine of prestige, superior quality with the ability to age well  for long periods of time.

Brunello di Montalcino is a visibly limpid, brilliant wine, with a bright garnet colour. It has an intense perfume, persistent, ample and ethereal. One can recognize scents of undergrowth, aromatic wood, berries, light vanilla and jam. To the taste the wine has an elegant harmonious body, vigorous and racy, it is dry with a lengthy aromatic persistence.**

Other Wines in the Area

Long before there was Brunello, there was Moscadello di Montalcino DOC , a wine that has been praised by several famous persons, demonstrating that it was recognized both in Italy and abroad and it is a part of the history of the area. It is produced in three different types: Still, Sparkling and Late Harvest and it is a white wine made with 100% Muscat Blanc grapes .

Moscadello di Montalcino - a wine from the Montalcino area in Tuscany

Another specialty wine is the Sant’Antimo DOC , which is made with any white or red grape variety authorized to grow in Tuscany as single-varietal wine or blend (labeled Bianco/white or rosso/red). In addition, the grapes must come from the Montalcino area and it must be bottled within the province of Siena. In fact, it is a very wide-ranging denomination that covers many wines both red and white as well as vin santo .

And then you also have a Rosso Montalcino , which similar to the Brunello is 100% Sangiovese. The main difference is that even though it can be aged, this is a wine designed to drink young. This is an excellent alternative to the more prestigious and complex Brunello and you can expect a flavor which is “harmonious and dry, with vigor and freshness and good persistence.”

Who to Add to your Itinerary

With over 200 producers in this specific area - it is (almost) impossible to even think about visiting them all. Though we wouldn’t fault you if you want to try!

However, if you are traveling with limited time then, perhaps you might want to narrow it down just a bit.

Community Museum & the Story of Brunello

Where: Hours: TUESDAY to FRIDAY 3:30pm - 7:00pm SATURDAY – SUNDAY & HOLIDAYS 11 am -1 pm to 3:30pm - 7:00pm from March 26 to October 31, 2016

Before heading straight to the vineyards, you want to stop by the " Museo della Comunità di Montalcino e del Brunello ".  Carved out of an old stable on the farm of Fattoria dei Barbi, this museum will guide you through the story of not just the wine, but the community, the people, their culture and their traditions .  This tour through time will give you a new perspective with which to access the scenery, the vineyards, and the locals as you tour through their homes.

The selection below is by no means the only ones to visit, they are just a few of the ones we found interesting. Booking a tasting is always highly recommended , you can try just stopping-in, but be advised that these are working farms and they don’t always have someone available to show you around and assist with a wine tasting. If you have your heart set on any one of these cellars or if you really want to taste the wines on the property, then call ahead and save the date .

Biondi-Santi

This is the founding father of Brunello and still using traditional harvest methods, the vendemmia is carried out entirely by hand and carried in baskets to the end of the row of vines, where pickers select the grapes, bunch by bunch. Unfortunately, the winery is no longer open to the public and tastings have to be planned elsewhere of their wines (in the wineshops in town). The website now reflects info on their wines.

Brunello Wine Tour

Come with us to discover the untouched landscape of Montalcino, land of the famous Brunello wine: the countryside, the small villages, the wineries, and the locals. Meet real people, dine at their tables, and taste their wines.

Private tours

Wine intensive, transportation.

Brunello di Montalcino wine tasting tour by the cellar

The Brunello Wine Tour: a wine-intensive day led by locals along the rolling hills of Tuscany. Come with us!

On our private Brunello Wine Tours we visit two or more wineries, Sant’Antimo Abbey and the old town of Montalcino. We also stop in the middle of the vineyards to understand the work of the vignerons.

We go off the beaten paths, literally! We’ll take the narrowest dirt roads, “Strade Bianche”, through the olive groves, vineyards, and forests of Montalcino to reach the most interesting people of this beautiful wine region in Tuscany.

We start in the morning around 10am . Our English-speaking driver guide pick you up directly at your accommodation in a luxury and very comfortable Mercedes Benz vehicle. On board, free water and wi-fi internet connection will always be available.

During the transfer to the first vineyard, your guide introduces you to the territory, its history, and its winemaking tradition.

At the winery , you have a private tour where you will meet the owner or one of the staff, a wine expert who guides you through the estate: vineyards, facilities, and aging cellar. At the end of the tour, we have our own reserved area for the tasting , usually with a view.

Here you taste 3-7 wines (it depends also on the size of the estate) guided by the owner or by an expert, such as a sommelier , who tells you the story of these wines, their characteristics, and best pairings. If necessary, your guide will also provide a brief introduction to the correct way to taste wines as well as an explanation of how the Italian system of wine denominations works.

During the morning we also stop in the old town of Montalcino with free time to stroll along the cobbled narrow lanes of this typical Tuscan village. Here you could take some nice pictures, sip a glass of wine at one of the old cafés, or just do some shopping.

Time permitting, we could also visit Sant’Antimo , an incredible 1200-year-old abbey in the middle of the countryside. If you are instead more interested in wine, we can plan to visit an extra winery in the late morning.

Depending on our itinerary, we stop either in Montalcino or at a small farm with a view of the valley where you can taste local farm to table delicacies for lunch . Usually we have an appetizer, a pasta course, and dessert.

In the afternoon, we tour another great Brunello producer where we have the possibility to visit the olive grove and taste his extra virgin olive oil in addition to his wines.

During the day, you have the possibility to buy wine directly at the estates at the most reasonable price. We also provide a service to ship the bottles directly to your home . We will take care of your wine by storing it in a refrigerated depository until you get back at home to receive it.

At the end of the day, we will transfer you back to your accommodation around 5pm .

What's included

  • private transportation in a luxury, fully licensed Mercedes Benz vehicle with a/c, free water, and wi-fi
  • local, fluent English-speaking, food & wine expert driver guide who will accompany you during the day explaining the secrets of the Montalcino terroir

We had a wonderful tour of the estate and the wine cellar which dated back hundreds of years and was so amazing to see! We bought a couple of bottles and Mario assured us him and Giovanni could ship the bottles home to us. Then Mario took us to Costanti. the woman who gave us the tour ( I forgot her name but she was lovely) also did the tasting and the wine was great. We bought another couple of bottles. Mario took some great photos for us in front of the vineyards and Montalcino town. He was a great guide and so knowledgeable about the town because he grew up there. This made the experience very personal which was great! Then he took us to lunch at Locanda Demtra which is owned by Gio and his brother. Wow. As soon as you walk in he kitchen and grounds they smell amazing and they cooked us a fantastic authentic local dish served with great wine overlooking the Tuscan hills. This place also offers cooking classes which unfortunately were booked but the people we met highly recommended them! Our last stop was the smallest winery but to me the most special because of Gemma- one of the owners. She runs it with her father and does everything from harvesting the grapes, to labeling the bottles and running the marketing. She took us through the vineyards and told us her father hand picks every grape for each harvest. Then we went inside for a tasting. At the end of the tasting she offered us her family batch of Vin Santo which made us feel so special and as if she was welcoming us into her home. We bought a few more bottles and our tour came to an end. Mario was so accommodating. He even stopped at a convenience store so my husband could buy some Advil. We left our bottles with Mario to ship home to us. Before dropping us off he recommended one of his favorite local restaurants Il Pozzo and helped us make a reservation. Then gave us his cell phone number in case we needed recommendations the rest of the trip. We ended up texting Mario the next day when we went to Pienza and he recommended a great farm for lunch that also has a cheese factory! Mario truly was a great tour guide from start to finish and we hope to return in the future to do another tour with him! Two days after we arrived home from Italy our wine arrived safe and sound in the US! Truly 5 star service!! This is a must do for your next Italy vacation! Thanks Giovanni and Mario!!!!

I booked a full day in Montalcino with Giovanni in advance of a family trip to Italy (me, my wife, and both sets of our parents). I reached out to a number of tour operators, but many would not do a day trip to Montalcino due to the distance (we were staying at a villa about an hour south, on the border of Tuscany and Umbria). Giovanni ensured us that it would not be a problem and that we would have a fantastic, full day. He could not have been more right.

We were picked up early by our driver for the day, Mario, in a clean, spacious van. Mario was THE BEST – no better resource for a day of being in Montalcino. He has spent his life in and around Montalcino (his grandfather was the fireman, his father the postman, and his brother the Mayor).

Mario took us to two fantastic wineries, to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, which was absolutely beautiful. We also had an amazing lunch in Montalcino and spent some time walking around the town. On our way back to the villa, Mario insisted that we make two additional stops, first was to see the villa that was featured in Gladiator, and then a stop in Pienza for the pecorino.

All in all a great day and highly recommended!

We just returned from a fabulous 3 week trip to Italy. Montalcino Wine Tours were there for us each leg of our trip. From transfers Venezia to Cinque Terra, stopping in Verona for lunch; Cinque Terra to Firenze stopping for a tasty lunch on the way. Mario was a very good driver, sensitive to my car sickness! On to our Villa Fonntelle in Montalcino, Giovanni took us for our best day of the trip. Wine tasting and a scrumptious lunch at his restaurant, beautiful view and the best food we’d had in the three weeks! Truffle hunting was another great day, never ending fun with these guys. Mario was a lot fun on our Cortona day trip, they all really went above and beyond a regular tour company.

We visited a nice mix of places, from very small family-run farms to midsized wineries. Each place had a unique brand and take on the wine process so it was nice to see the differences in the process each family does. We loved all the wines, he made purchasing and shipping product home incredibly easy. I hope to get the chance to take this tour again on our next trip to Tuscany.

We enjoyed an all day wine tour with Giovanni in September during a 4 day stay in Tuscany. We were were traveling with our daughter and her husband, who had hired Giovanni two years previous, so we knew we were in for a treat. He arranged 2 different winery visits and tastings in the Montalcino area, plus a delicious Al Fresco lunch overlooking his own vineyard. One winery was a small scale, personal operation, and the other a more sophisticated larger scale winery, both with tours by the proprietors. The wineries were nicely curated for our interests, and we were delighted with both. The tours were fascinating, in depth and inspiring. We were picked up promptly in a spacious van, and Giovanni was quite personable and engaging and easy to talk with. We thoroughly enjoyed his company and would highly recommend his tours.

If in Montalcino, not to be missed. Giovanni and Chiara coordinated with us prior to our arrival to understand our interests to customize our day. We were looking for smaller wineries.

Giovanni picked us at 9:45. We visited two wineries in the morning. We spent time walking in the vineyards and cellars talking about the wine growing process and the special policies for cellaring and bottling the Rosso and Brunello de Montalcino wines. And of course tasting the wines. We met the winemaker at the second winery.

Next up was lunch at Locanda Demetra, a small restaurant and cooking school located just outside the city with beautiful views of the countryside. We ate outside and had an appetizer sampler, two small pasta dishes, a pork medallion, a bottle of Rosso de Montalcino, dessert of chocolate cake and gelato, and coffee. All part of the tour costs.

After a leisurely lunch, we visited the Abbey at San Antimo for a quick visit and off to one last winery.

We finished the day around 6:15 pm. We never felt rushed. We had time to soak it all in, ask questions, and really enjoy the whole experience. We bought wine along the way. All of the wineries ship back to USA. We decided to take our wine and let this company ship them all back together. Quite reasonable for international shipping. All of the wines from this region are of high quality and very reasonable comparing to Napa Valley for similar quality wines.

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that is a wine enthusiast.

There are not enough words to explain how wonderful of an experience we had with Mario on our honeymoon. By the end of our trip, we didn’t consider Mario a tour guide, but a good friend, and one that we knew we would be back to visit. His tours are so customized and personal, you feel like you are getting the true insiders view of Tuscany. His family has lived in the region for generations- he speaks about his home with pure contagious compassion. I will never forget the day he dropped us off for our next destination and how sad we were to part ways- we wish we could have had his guidance and company for the entire trip! We can’t wait to go back.

We hired this company for a transfer from Milan to Tuscany and a tour of the Modena and Parma on the way. Originally we were planning on a wine tour in Montalcino with them, but we ran out of time. Unfortunately our plane from the US was several hours late, but we found Giovanni easily at the airport. He had booked a tour of a cheese farm that we also missed sadly. He got us to Modena in time for lunch and a tour around town. He also stopped by a modena balsamic vinegar facility spontaneously, and we were able to get a private tour and pick up our first Italy souvenirs. He drove us to our hotel in Greve and gave us all sorts of Italy info on the way. He is very likeable and easy to talk to on long trips. He is an outdoor enthusiast and I’m sure we be great on an outdoor adventure. If you want a tour of the famous Brunello wineries, I’m confident this would be the group to do it with. They were all from the area and well connected.

Wow! I can’t say enough good things about this tour! We were in Tuscany for a wedding and a group of 13 of us booked this tour. Giovanni and Chiara picked us up at our Villa in 2 really nice, air conditioned vans. Then we were off to our first winery and tasting. We learned so much about the area, wine, weather and any other question we could throw at them!😊. They are so incredibly knowledgeable about the area. The first winery was fantastic, we learned so much about the process and tastes amazing wines. Then they took us to a tour of an Abbey which was so inspiring and beautiful, and then to lunch on their family farm. Holy smokes!! Alessandro, Giovanni’s brother and their family hosts an incredible lunch….you might as well be part of the family as that’s how you feel as soon as you sit down at the table! After a lunch that is so tasty, you are off to another vineyard and tasting. Another great choice! All the staff at both wineries are so friendly and make the tastings so much fun! Then they drove us back to our Villa…we were with them the entire day but it flew by as we were having so much fun learning about wines and the entire Tuscany area. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour! You will be treated to a fantastic day!

We can’t possibly recommend Montalcino Wine Tours enough! Our whole experience with them was absolutely fantastic. On the planning side, Chiara was so incredibly helpful and always available to answer questions and give us options for the things we wanted to do. She even helped us arrange transportation out of Montalcino, which isn’t the easiest thing to do. And then the experience itself was perfect. We did a Brunello wine tour with Giovanni, who is extremely knowledgeable about both the Montalcino area and winemaking (we learned more about wine in those hours with Giovanni than we have anywhere else), and it was everything we hoped it would be. Great wine, beautiful lunch, informative, and so much fun. Just tell Chiara and her team what you want to do, and they will make it all happen for you. Thank you SO much, Chiara and Giovanni! Our time in Montalcino was magical and everything we needed to relieve the stress of the last few years.

You tell her what you are interested in and let her do her magic. There isn’t a reservation she can’t book. Total access and you will not only enjoy the tastings but the ride and conversation with her is worth the trip as well. She should be the Mayor of Montalcino. In any case she has my vote. 🙂 Also, if you have not done a deeper dive vineyard and food tour in Montalcino, then make it a priority. Just the best!

We had the most amazing and memorable day in Montalcino thanks to Giovanni!! My boyfriend and I scheduled a private tour with Giovanni, and he was punctual, knowledgeable, warm, and created the most perfect day for us in this small wine country city. He picked us up from our hotel, and we headed to our first winery. This was a small winery, that took the time to give a tour of their vineyard and their facility. It gave us such an appreciation of the wine we enjoyed later that visit. We met the winery owner and his daughter, and got know them and their experience as a winery owner in Italy.

From there we went to a medium sized winery and then a large one. Each appointment was set up in advance by Giovanni, and they were ready and expecting us. It was such a neat experience and not at all like the herd feeling we get when wine tasting in the US.

In between we went to lunch at a small restaurant in Giovanni’s village – which was so quaint – only 53 people live there! The food, wine, and service were amazing!

Giovanni was so knowledgeable, professional, and warm. He made this experience an experience of a lifetime and I would refer him and go back to him in a heartbeat!

We actually did the cooking class with his brother the next day, I’ll be sharing a review with them as well. Another absolute must while in Montalcino!!

Thank you Giovanni for the memories of a lifetime!

From beginning to end Montalcino Wine Tours was absolutely perfect! We started with email correspondence with Giovanni. We only had one day for a guided tour, so he helped us by organizing the best day. Our guide Chiara was so knowledgeable! She was professional, but also personable and made us feel right at home. Our day began with a truffle hunt with Paolo (and his dog Millie). If you are in Tuscany during truffle hunting seasons, you must book this with Montalcino Wine Tours, specifically Paolo. Again, so knowledgeable. And an unforgettable experience. Our lunch was DIVINE! We had a little extra time in the afternoon, as we were ahead of schedule. Not a problem – Chiara drove us to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo to explore. A beautiful spot to walk off our lunch and take pictures of the gorgeous scenery. We ended our day at La Fornace Winery and sampled their delicious wine! We will definitely be recommending Montalcino Wine Tours to friends and family travelling in the area. It was our favorite day of our entire vacation. Thank you!!

Most enjoyable day touring the Montalcino vineyards! Chiara was our guide, and was awesome! Her passion for wine, and her knowledge of Montalcino and local wine were very evident. We communicated in advance so she could find out our wine background, interests, and preferences. We did the six-hour, 2 vineyard tour with lunch included.

Chiara picked us up at our hotel right on time and in a comfortable ride. She took us to 2 small, family-owned vineyards where we got a tour of the vineyard and quality time spent with the winemaker. Chiara acted as translator at the first vineyard where the winemaker did not speak much English. We had nice tastings at each vineyard (in the homes of the winemakers) and the opportunity to purchase wine from each vineyard. Chiara handled the details for shipping back to the US.

After visiting the vineyards, we had a marvelous lunch at the local cooking school (Locandra Demetra). Amazing lunch with an amazing view!!

Highly recommend Montalcino Wine tours and Chiara as a guide!!

Having the day with Mario touring us around Montalcino was easily one of the highlights of our stay in Tuscany. Mario was a pleasure to talk with and was a wealth of information regarding not only the vineyards we visited that day but about the wines, other vineyards and the history of Montalcino. Obviously, with Mario being a native, we felt like we had an insiders view which he was very open in sharing. Brad, wanting to know as much as he could, about Montalcino vineyards, the different growing regions, Brunello di Montalcino and where the best restaurants & enotecas were… Mario had answers to All his never ending questions. While Molly & I had just met Mario that day, we felt we knew him as a friend by days end…which we didn’t want to end. What a fabulous, memorable day. Mario will gladly pick you up wherever you are staying, he’s prompt, his car is clean, and the anticipation for a day of wine tasting is next to none! Mario arranged for us to have private tours and tastings at each of the wineries we visited, and each one was just as fantastic as the one before. Mario is extremely knowledgable on all things Brunello wine….from how the location of the vineyard to how the grapes are processed and the impact on the flavor and quality of the wines.

Thanks to Mario, our wine cellar is full of many different Brunello wines, and each time we pop the cork, we travel back to exactly where the grapes were born. Absolutely, 100%, without a doubt, book Mario for your Montalcino wine tour!

Our day started with a little adversity with a vehicle, which resulted in getting started a little later than expected, which ultimately caused us to miss first vineyard. Chiara handled the situation perfectly and in no time we were back up and running with a replacement vehicle and we were off for a fantastic day!

Chiara made a few calls whist we were visiting our first vineyard, and was able to make arrangements for us to make a visit to a 3rd vineyard/winery at the end of our day. WOW, talk about going above and beyond!

After our first stop we were taken to lunch at an amazing restaurant right in Montalcino which included wine and whatever we wanted to eat. We were given amazing treatment and service by the owner Antinio and the food was incredible!

After lunch we headed for our 2nd stop was absolutely incredible and were intrigued with her passion for her wines, her family and the pride was evident. we LOVED this stop, highly recommend and the wine was fantastic and free to pour as much as we wanted!

Our final stop was Baricci. Although the production is VERY small, if you love Brunello you have to make it a point to stop in here (if you can get a visit) or at least try their wine while in Montalcino. Francesco, his brother Federico and father Pietro are very busy as they are the heart and soul of this family run winery and we were VERY lucky (thanks to Chiara no doubt) to be able to get a visit to see them just after harvest! Francesco spent so much time with us we couldn’t believe it, his passion is second to none and it shows in the amazing product that they produce there! The POS machine was down during the evening, so we went back the next day to conclude our purchase, the entire family was there again working away! (Side note: They ship to Canada, wooohooo)

Overall the experience provided by Chiara and Montalcino Wine Tours was truly amazing and I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who visits the Montalcino area.

Once again, thanks so much for having us!

We asked for a one-day tour of Montalcino wineries, and Giovanni put together the itinerary.

We were 7 travelers, wine lovers but not experts, stopping in Porto Santo Stefano aboard a SeaDream Yacht Club cruise. Our driver, Luca, picked us up at the port in a clean, comfortable, and spacious van. Luca was friendly, knowledgeable, and funny.

We went to a medium sized, well known winery in the morning. We toured the vineyard and cellar and tasted 6 great wines. And these were pretty generous pours for a tasting (this was a theme for the day). We lingered, drank, and ate, and liked the wine so much that we bought several bottles on our way out. With the strong US dollar, we were surprised by the reasonable prices for decently aged (2010, 2012, 2015) Riserva wines.

Montalcino Montepulciano and Pienza Wine tour from Florence

Wine tour from Florence, Montalcino - Montepulciano - Pienza

Private day trip from Florence to experience three wonderful cities in the heart of Tuscany: Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza , surrounded by the beautiful landscape of the Orcia Valley. Your day tour to Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza, begins in the morning with the meeting of your private driver in the lobby of your hotel in Florence. Your driver takes you to the Tuscan area south of Siena, where in the suggestive landscape of the Val d'Orcia are the three beautiful medieval towns of Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza, where you will have time to explore at your leisure and guided visit prestigious wineries in Montalcino and Montepulciano with guided tastings of their fine wines, including Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano.

Montalcino is a pretty village, where Romanesque-Gothic architecture prevails, dominated by the fourteenth-century Rocca Medicea which houses an Enoteca that offers for sale almost all the most representative Brunello of the area.

The vineyards are mainly cultivated with Sangiovese , a clone of Sangiovese known as Sangiovese Grosso , so called due to the thickness of the skin. Brunello di Montalcino was born from the inspiration of Ferruccio Biondi – Santi, who sensed the aging potential of Sangiovese grosso to obtain a full, structured and full-bodied wine: Brunello di Montalcino which has been one of the best Italian wines for over 150 years. Today the golden hill of Montalcino, thanks to its terroir, good climatic conditions and huge capital investments, represents the most successful reality in the Italian wine sector. Brunello - the crème de la crème of Italian enology - really shows its potential: wonderful elegance combined with excellent potency and concentration of taste and aroma, with hints of spice. Brunello never wants to be "a light drink".

In Montalcino guided tour of a winery followed by a tasting of Montalcino wines including the famous Brunello. Between Montalcino and Montepulciano stands Pienza , a rare example of a Renaissance city in the heart of the Val d'Orcia. Director Franco Zeffirelli used the romantic city as a film set for Romeo and Juliet.

Strolling in the center of Pienza you will appreciate this town was completely redesigned by Pope Pius II , supported by the architect Bernardo Rossellino in 1459. This new vision of the urban space was realized in the superb square called Piazza Pio II and in the surrounding buildings: Palazzo Piccolomini, Palazzo Borgia and the Cathedral where Renaissance and Gothic styles merge. Montepulciano is an ancient Etruscan settlement , transformed into a fortified village in the Middle Ages and surrounded by walls and fortifications designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder in 1511 during the Medici domination. The town has an unusually harmonious aspect, the main square with the Cathedral; absolutely worth seeing are the elegant Palazzo de 'Nobili-Tauragi, the austere Palazzo Comunale and the splendid Renaissance Church of San Biagio. The town is known for the production of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, another son of the Sangiovese vine locally called Prugnolo Gentile, a full-bodied ruby red. The Vino Nobile is a vibrant intense ruby red, with a nose rich in cherry and raspberry fruit.  Your guided tour of a Montepulciano winery will be followed by a tasting of Montepulciano wines including the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

  • Why is Montepulciano so famous?

Montepulciano is famous for several reasons, primarily related to its wine, history, and picturesque surroundings: 1. Wine Production: Montepulciano is renowned for producing high-quality wine, particularly the red wine known as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This wine has a rich history dating back to the medieval times and is made primarily from Sangiovese grapes. The region's favorable climate and soil conditions contribute to the quality of the wine. 2. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: This wine has gained international recognition and is considered one of Italy's finest red wines. It has a deep ruby-red color, a complex flavor profile with notes of dark fruits, herbs, and spices, and a smooth, velvety texture. Its aging potential also adds to its allure. 3. Historical Significance:  Montepulciano is a town rich in history and culture. Its medieval and Renaissance architecture, including churches, palaces, and fortifications, attract visitors from around the world. The town's historical center is well-preserved and offers glimpses into its past, with notable landmarks such as the Palazzo Comunale, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and the Church of San Biagio. Montepulciano's strategic location in Tuscany also played a role in its historical importance, as it was situated along important trade routes and was a center of political and economic activity during various periods of history. 4. Cultural Heritage: The town hosts various cultural events, including festivals, concerts, and exhibitions, which celebrate its artistic and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore museums, art galleries, and theaters showcasing the region's rich cultural traditions. 5. Scenic Beauty: Montepulciano is situated amidst the stunning landscape of Tuscany, characterized by rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves. Its picturesque setting attracts tourists seeking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Italian countryside. 6. Culinary Delights: In addition to its wine, Montepulciano offers a diverse culinary scene, with traditional Tuscan cuisine featuring locally sourced ingredients. Visitors can indulge in authentic dishes paired with local wines, enhancing their overall experience. Overall, Montepulciano's combination of exceptional wine production and rich historical heritage has contributed to its enduring fame and popularity among travelers and wine enthusiasts alike.

  • What is the difference between Montalcino and Montepulciano wines?

Montalcino and Montepulciano are both famous wine-producing regions in Italy, but they produce different types of wine from different grape varieties. Montalcino is known for its Brunello di Montalcino wine, which is made primarily from Sangiovese grapes. Brunello di Montalcino is a robust and full-bodied red wine with rich flavors of dark fruit, earth, and spice. It is aged for a minimum of four years, with at least two years spent in oak barrels. On the other hand, Montepulciano is known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wine, which is made primarily from the Sangiovese grape variety known locally as Prugnolo Gentile. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is also a red wine, but it tends to be softer and more approachable in its youth compared to Brunello di Montalcino. It typically exhibits flavors of cherry, plum, and herbs, with a smooth texture.

Montalcino: The wines of Montalcino, particularly Brunello di Montalcino, are made primarily from the Sangiovese grape variety, known locally as Sangiovese Grosso. This grape is prized for its thick skin and rich flavor profile, contributing to the intense and complex character of Brunello di Montalcino. Montepulciano: Despite the name similarity, Montepulciano wines are not made from the Montepulciano grape variety, which is common in central and southern Italy. Instead, Montepulciano wines, particularly Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, are predominantly made from Sangiovese grapes, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. Other permitted grape varieties in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano include Canaiolo Nero and Mammolo.

  • Way of Production:

Montalcino: Brunello di Montalcino is known for its strict production regulations. The wine must be made entirely from Sangiovese grapes and aged for a minimum of four years, with at least two years spent in oak barrels. This extended aging process contributes to the wine's complexity, structure, and aging potential. Montepulciano: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano follows similar aging regulations as Brunello di Montalcino, with a minimum aging period of two years. However, the wine can be a blend of Sangiovese grapes (minimum 70%) along with other permitted varieties. The aging process in oak barrels helps to soften the wine's tannins and enhance its aromatic profile.

Montalcino: The history of winemaking in Montalcino can be traced back to the Middle Ages when the region was known for its wine production. However, the modern reputation of Montalcino as a premier wine-producing area is largely attributed to the success of Brunello di Montalcino, which gained international acclaim in the 20th century.

Montepulciano: Winemaking in Montepulciano has ancient origins, dating back to the Etruscans and later the Romans. The region's winemaking traditions were further developed during the Renaissance. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of Italy's oldest wine appellations, receiving official recognition in 1966 as one of the country's first DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) wines. So, in summary, the main difference lies in the grape varieties used and the style of wine produced. Montalcino produces Brunello di Montalcino from Sangiovese grapes, while Montepulciano produces Vino Nobile di Montepulciano primarily from Sangiovese grapes as well, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile.
