Kansas City, Missouri, is a twin city on the other side of the state line from Kansas City, Kansas.

To better discuss the two, we can use their nicknames KCMO (Kansas City, Missouri) and KCK (Kansas City, Kansas).

Together, the metro area has nearly 2.4 million people, but KCMO is home to 508,000 of those.

The cities (and states) are split by the Missouri River, which forms the state boundary.

North Kansas City is a separate city just north of KCMO.

Without Kansas City, the world might never have known about the creative mind of Walt Disney.

An initiative called Thank You Walt Disney is underway to preserve the history and influence Kansas City had on the man who brought the world of Disney to our daily lives.

Here you can take part in the great American barbecue war, which is really just a personal preference, but we like to make a big deal about it.

Kansas City Barbecue is known for its signature sauce that is thick, sweet, and poured on meat that’s been dry-rubbed and slow-cooked.

It’s a style so popular that Kansas is known as the Barbecue Capital of the World.

On both sides of the state line, Midwestern values reign, and the Chiefs might as well be the best football team ever created.

The Kansas City Royals MLB team brings in big crowds too.

I grew up across the state in St. Louis, so we’re sports rivals with KC.

It’s really important when visiting this area to make sure you know WHICH Kansas City is being referred to, so always look for the MO or KS after the address.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Kansas City

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

There's a medium to high risk in KCMO. The crime rates are exponentially higher than the national average based on recently released 2021 crime data. While there are pockets of the city to avoid and places that are safe, we'll investigate all the different options and statistics.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Ride KC offers fixed-route, express, and streetcars to get around the greater Kansas City region. It spans both states and offers easy routes no matter where you want to go. Taxis, rideshares, and rental cars are also available.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: MEDIUM

Of the 14,000 thefts in Kansas City in 2021, just 55 were pickpockets or purse snatchings. It's technically a low risk, but treat it as a medium risk because it's just too easy to get distracted and make yourself a potential target.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: MEDIUM

There's a medium risk here as KCMO gets storms throughout the year. Winter can be just as dangerous as summer, but there are also years you get mild seasons, and you'd never guess it's a disaster-prone area. You should also watch out for river flooding during periods of heavy rain.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The robbery rate is three times the national average, so there's another medium risk. Limit your exposure by not carrying around a large, dangling purse or wearing expensive jewelry.

TERRORISM RISK: MEDIUM

It's a major metro area, so yeah, there's medium risk. There's also law enforcement presence with Homeland Security support on both sides of the river.

SCAMS RISK: LOW

If you're looking to buy tickets to a sporting event, avoid buying them on third-party websites. I know you want a good deal, but a deal that is too good to be true usually is. You might even pay full price for tickets that aren't valid. Other than that, most scams are focused on residents.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: MEDIUM

Women have the same medium risk as men. The sexual assault rate is just more than twice the national average. This isn't a city to walk around alone at night, and you should always give your full attention to walking and situational awareness. Leave the headphones at the hotel.

TAP WATER RISK: LOW

The 2022 Water Quality Report shows full compliance with state and federal standards and gives in-depth explanations of where the water comes from and how it's treated. The only concern in this part of the country is lead in the water, which usually comes from aging pipes, not the treatment process.

  • Safest Places to Visit in Kansas City

VisitKC.com is the official tourism website for the region.

Note the word “region” because it includes KCMO, KCK, Johnson County, and all the other suburban cities.

If I get through this article without ordering BBQ, it will be a miracle.

While you really can’t go wrong with any barbecue, I’m going to avoid my own recommendations and let Kansas City Magazine take the blame/credit.

Their top three BBQ locations in KCMO (not a suburb or across state lines) are:

  • Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue
  • Big T’s Bar B Q
  • Gates Bar-B-Q

There’s an app called KC’s Barbecue Experience where you can see all the options available and earn badges along the way.

I can’t stress enough how much you should try the Burnt Ends at any place you visit.

Now that you’re full let’s go explore the museums of Kansas City.

You can find something for all your interests, from history to sports to art:

  • National WWI Museum and Memorial
  • Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
  • College Basketball Experience (with the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame inside)
  • American Jazz Museum
  • National Museum of Toys and Miniatures
  • National Airline History Museum
  • The Money Museum
  • Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum

Country Club Plaza, referred to as “The Plaza,” is a midtown shopping and dining destination.

It combines a laid-back vibe with elegance seamlessly.

If you get a chance to be here for the Christmas lights, you won’t regret it.

While you have various restaurant options here, it’s a great place to try a Kansas City steak.

Crown Plaza downtown is outside the headquarters of Hallmark and gives that “Hallmark Movie” vibe.

Stop by the Hallmark Visitor’s Center, LEGOLAND Discovery Center, and SEA LIFE aquarium.

It’s touted as a “City Within A City,” so this could be a good location for booking your hotel.

Visit the KC Film Office to schedule a Film History Tour or a Queer Eye for the Straight Guy Season 3 tour.

You’ll be amazed at how much Hollywood history is nestled here in the middle of the Midwest.

  • Places to Avoid in Kansas City

There are a lot of places that light up as high crime areas on crime distribution maps!

In general, east of Highway 71 and south of Independence Avenue are home to the highest crime rates.

Any neighborhood with Marlborough in the name should be avoided, Knoches Park too.

Swope Park is near the Zoo, but the neighborhood itself isn’t too safe.

Just go to the zoo and then leave the area on major streets or interstates.

There aren’t any crime rashes at the zoo, but be sure to lock the car door when you park.

I really can’t stress this one enough – know which Kansas City you are booking a hotel in and double-check before finalizing the purchase.

The Kansas City Marriott could be one of many locations on both sides of the state line.

  • Safety Tips for Traveling to Kansas City
  • I was able to pinpoint some of those dangerous neighborhoods by looking at the KCMO Police Department’s interactive crime map. It’s a great tool to see crime trends closer to your visit. I would recommend searching the crimes of robbery (look for strong-armed or armed street incidents), vehicle thefts, thefts from vehicles, homicide, and aggravated assault. Don’t click on just “thefts” because that will overwhelm the map.
  • You can add this number to your phone directory to get the police department information line – (816)234-5000. Each area has its own patrol division, and there are two community interaction officers.
  • The Police Department posts an annual report each year where you can read crime details, challenges, and successes. The website has two sites that claim to be for annual reports, but you want the one under the MEDIA tab, as it is the most updated.
  • The Greater KC Crime Stoppers program covers the entire metro area. If you have information about a crime that already happened, call (816)474-8477. You can remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward. If there is a crime in progress, always call 911. There is also a form on the police department’s website where you can report suspected drug activity without putting in any personal information.
  • Look for the Crime Prevention Handbook on the police department’s website too. It’s an extensive list of every type of crime and best safety practices.
  • If you are on one of the main roads (not interstates) between KCMO and KCK, don’t be surprised if the street name changes. This is quite common (and poor planning, if you ask me). For example, West Bannister Road in KCMO turns into W 95th Street if you cross into KCK. Yet, just south of there, 103rd Street keeps the name as you go across the state line.
  • Keep up with traffic by downloading the KC Scout app. You can see real-time traffic information, construction zones, and accidents. It covers the entire KC metro area.
  • For those enjoying the nightlife in KCMO, you can take the free streetcar to get around, but it does stop service at midnight. Some bars are open past that. Make sure you have a rideshare or other way to get home. Don’t walk back to your hotel that late at night.
  • Looking to save money and avoid pulling out your wallet in KC? Sign up for KC Savings through the tourism website. You can get hotel, shopping, parking, and restaurant discounts. The pass is free to everyone as a way for KCMO to introduce you to “The New Midwest.”
  • Do not attempt to swim in the Missouri River. It’s muddy, swift, and full of debris. Then there’s the water quality issue, assuming you get past all those other challenges.
  • So... How Safe Is Kansas City Really?

The violent crime rate is more than three and a half times the national average.

That’s enough to convince some people it’s REALLY not that safe.

Perspective is important, however.

As I mentioned, I’m from St. Louis, and I laugh when I think that Kansas City is “SO DANGEROUS.”

That’s not to make light of crime at all, it’s just that St. Louis is a pretty dangerous city (and larger).

KCMO and St. Louis are always near each other on the “Most Dangerous Cities” list.

You’re doing the right thing by researching this because I can’t tell you the awesome things you’d miss if you were scared off by crime numbers.

It’s knowing what parts to explore, what parts to avoid, what’s safe day vs. night, etc.

Just 19% of the violent crimes were against strangers, and 55% of violent crimes happen in homes.

That’s enough to lower the risk for a tourist without making them nonchalant about the inherent risks.

30% of highway robberies are in public places, which lowers the risk of a person being robbed vs. a business.

On a somewhat positive note, the robbery rate is down 64% since five years ago, so there is progress being made.

You just have to see the forest through the trees.

Treat this city as you would any major metro area.

Stay in the entertainment districts and avoid dangerous neighborhoods.

It can be that easy, along with situational awareness, common sense, and standard safety practices.

  • How Does Kansas City Compare?
  • Useful Information

A U.S. Travel or Work Visa is required to enter through Customs. You can also check the State Department's website to see if you qualify for a Visa Waiver. You can travel freely between KCK and KCMO without having to show proof of your visa.

The U.S. Dollar is the only currency accepted throughout the metro area and both Kansas and Missouri. You can exchange currency at many banks and through airport services. Avoid using a public ATM to get cash if you can.

There are all four seasons here, so dress for the season, but don't be surprised if the weather changes. Midwestern weather is notorious for its fluctuations. One day might feel like spring, and the next day you're in bone-chilling cold. Summers will be hot and humid, so don't wear clothing that can't have sweat stains washed out.

Kansas City International Airport (KCI) is on the far north side of town on the Missouri side. Plan 30 minutes for travel time, but check traffic maps to see if there are delays during rush hours.

Travel Insurance

It's smart to protect your travel investment and your belongings with travel insurance. Make sure you know how severe weather or snowstorm delays will impact rescheduling or refunding flights.

Kc resident.

As a Kansas City resident, I believe KC to be similar to other cities in terms of safety. There are areas that you avoid, but overall, I feel very safe going places. Over the past 20 years, downtown has been transformed from a place that emptied out on weekends to a destination for tourists and residents alike. We have world class restaurants, art museums and cultural venues. You can get almost anywhere in forty minutes without the hectic traffic prevalent in other, larger cities. The cost of living is low and the suburban school districts are excellent. I moved here 22 years ago and love the city and all it has to offer.

Safty is not a problem its just being over taxed

I love Kansas City and have lived here for over 35 years, but what I do not like is the jackson county assessment on homes, It has made it unrealistic to own a home here because the taxes are totally unresonable. If I had known how bad this was I would have not purchased a home here and bought a home in overland park Kansas Instead. When I am ready to retire I will have to move out of this crazy town.

I’ve been a KC native my entire life and my parents and grandparents before them. And to tell you the truth, my grandparents moved her from the south in the 60’d because KC was diverse, with out racism. This comment “ There are shootouts at the bars, high-way shooters and white supremacists planning terrorist attacks on synagogues, mosques or just shooting up people that don’t look white.“ is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS, and clearly from a writer who is only read the news and not experienced a beautiful city. Don’t state out past 1am in any city or your asking for trouble.

S TOWN STAND UP

KC is terrifying brah. I’d rather walk around Mogadishu Somalia at night trying to pick up hookers than visit the Power & Light district after 7 PM

You must have had one bad experience because I have lived in KC my entire life and nothing bad has happened to me nor have I seen something happen to another person like always stay safe after dark, but your analogy is ridiculous!

KC is quite safe unless you are MU fan and forget to breathe. However, that could happen anywhere.

Kansas City is generally safe, except when the cattle trains come into town and the cowboys go crazy. Lots of six guns and arm wrestling when that happens. Indian raids are always a risk, but increasingly rare, especially in cold weather. White Supremacists can be warded off by giving them the white salute if cornered, which involves placing your hand over your heart and yelling “Sucotash” loudly. Beware the hinterlands, which are plagued by roaming bands of suburban youth gangs, such as the Leawood Gourmands, the Overland Park Nantucket Reds, and the MIssion Hills Gucci Guys. They are recognizable by the fashion neckwear they sport. Also, US currency is no longer acceptable in most areas of KC, which now take only bitcoin, barbecue, or swiss francs. Good luck.

Love this! LOL!

The one who said that white supremacist (whatever that means) is crazy. KC is a safe and beautiful city

Wow, I think this account of KC is actually more accurate than the article! Awesome!!!

What? Are you talking about?

Don,t have a clue what this reviewer is talking about. No white supremacists running around. Been hanging in bars 40 years no shootouts yet, not been shot at while driving either. Admittedly some places in southeast I would not go too. But if you are a tourist and do tourist type things you are fine. Who ever wrote the bullshit has no clue…… He or she is a dumbass

FREINDLY BLACKS

Took the Bus in KC as a Visitor Black Bus Driver friendly, so was Black Passengers.

Great way to see the City !

Love Living in KC

Like every big city, KC is diverse and complicated. In some parts, like City Market, the diversity shines and people from many different backgrounds come together to shop, sell, and experience each other’s culture in a positive, fun, and engaging way. In some other places, not so much. Unlike what “Lifelong” stated yes there are plenty of bigots’ and depending on your skin color you could have problems with law enforcement. But the museums, West Bottom’s antiques, restaurants, shops are great. It’s pretty easy to get around. Don’t forget to check out the Kansas City Speedway across the river in KC Kansas (also where Sporting KC, the soccer team, plays). Lots more shops and restaurants. My wife and I love living in KC (I’m from Colorado and she’s from Texas). Safety is average for an American big city, but well worth the visit.

Kansas City Meh

The people that grow up in Kansas City love it, but I lived there for five years and I thought it was absolutely meh. The City is okay, not impressive but some nice things to do, generally overpriced. The people were just a bunch of angry libs and spoiled kids, especially on the Kansas side, not to mention having a huge chip on their shoulders. Compared to other bigger Cities its very overrated. It is fun to watch your favorite baseball team go there and destroy the royals. BTW any mention of St. Louis and you’ll find that they have a general unsolicited hate or disdain for the STL, you’ve been warned. The BBQ and the Mexican food is great, most other cuisines weren’t too good besides a small handful of mom and pop restaurants. I would rate it a 4/10. Just about anything in this town can be found in other cities and done better, stop at one of those cities instead. Bottom line if you’re Liberal and you’re tired of bigger cities you’ll probably love it, everyone else its not worth your time.

Having spent time in Pella, I can confirm it’s a safe and welcoming town. The picturesque surroundings and the genuine hospitality of the locals contribute to a pleasant visit.

Relaxed and safe

I appreciate hearing honest perspectives on KC’s safety. I was surprised during my visit, a peaceful and secure town that’s perfect for a relaxed getaway.

Travel website design for KC Abroad! Sand, seashells, stunning structures, and sunsets. Definitely some of my favorite things, and I cannot think of a more inspiring mood board as a foundation for this luxurious brand.

When Krissy came to Girlboss Designer, she was ready to chase her passion for travel and launch her new travel advisor business. She believes in a life well-traveled, and we couldn’t agree more. She wants to build connections with her clients, give them confidence in her services, and leave them feeling inspired and excited about their upcoming travels.

Krissy’s branding pulls the sandy neutrals of a white sand beach and the blush tones of a destination sunset together to create a feminine and professional feel. This light and airy brand is grounded by the darker gray color, and we chose to focus more on the neutrals through the website over the blushes to make sure the brand didn’t feel too overly feminine.

For the KC Abroad website, Krissy chose our ShowIt template makeover service, using the Bella template , which is now available in the GBD Shop . You can check out the website reveal here!

“Our commitment is to building long-standing relationships with both our clients and our industry partners worldwide.”

Regions of operation: Africa and the Middle East

Countries of expertise: All of Africa

Special categories: Adventure Travel, Over the Top Trips, Destination Celebrations

What do you do that competing specialists can’t/won’t:

Our commitment to building long-standing relationships with both our clients and our industry partners worldwide. From the very first phone call with a client to their arrival back home, we spend countless hours fine-tuning their itinerary to ensure every detail of their trip is designed to fit their specific travel interests and expectations. We travel extensively each year to personally vet all of the partners within our global network to ensure the highest caliber of service and social, cultural, and environmentally responsible practices. We bring our clients a long list of preferred travel partners through our personal experiences in destination, getting to know them and the quality of the product and services they can provide our clients.

Do you think the events of recent years have permanently changed the role of the specialist/agent? Any forever pivots that you've made?

Yes, travel is extremely complex and it is more important than ever to provide our clients with support throughout their travels. We play a very important role in making sure our clients have seamless travel experiences.

How do you deal with unforeseen issues on the ground?

We do our best to provide our clients with realistic travel expectations and always have a backup plan in place to rely on if necessary. We work very closely with our global travel partners and are in constant communication when our clients are traveling so we can resolve any unforeseen circumstances quickly. For example, I recently had honeymoon clients taking their long anticipated, delayed honeymoon from 2020. They were going on a once-in-a-lifetime safari trip across South Africa and ending their honeymoon relaxing on the beaches of Mauritius. The day before they were scheduled to fly from South Africa to Mauritius, the country of Mauritius closed its borders to travelers from South Africa due to the pandemic. My partners in South Africa notified me prior to the official announcement being released, which provided me the opportunity to put a new plan in place. I had new flights and travel logistics arranged in time to share the information with my client while simultaneously having a bottle of wine delivered to their room.

There appears to be an ongoing outage with international roaming across multiple cellular networks, with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile customers abroad complaining about the issue on social networks and cellular community forums .

verizon

Based on feedback from customers that have managed to contact support, the providers are aware of the issue with international roaming and are actively working on resolving it, although there have been reports that this could take several hours. We'll update this article as soon as we learn more.

Update 2: Bloomberg reports that a Verizon customer service representative who was contacted from the UK on Thursday said that it's an ongoing issue that engineers are working to address.

I'm always curious with issues like this, do people seriously think that a vendor is just going to sit around and not work on the problem? While their networks aren't as robust as they like us to think, they are going to resolve these issues if nothing else to avoid government hassling them for causing an outage.

This screwed me so bad yesterday in Mexico City. Carrier left us out to dry. I’m leaving Verizon over this. What I went through yesterday when this randomly happened in a random neighborhood of CDMX I will never forgive this company for.

I love how all of these people are disagreeing with me like I didn’t have a horrible experience in Mexico City over this issue. It’s actually a personal thing and you people shouldn’t really have an opinion at all. Pretty rude.

Why choose the Travel and Immunization Clinic?

You may ask, “Why do I need to visit the Travel and Immunization Clinic when I could go to my own doctor to get my shots?”

The answer is simple: Most family doctors are not as experienced or equipped with the detailed knowledge necessary to make accurate travel health recommendations as is our team of travel specialists at The Travel and Immunization Clinic. Travel medicine is a complex field and has now become a true medical specialty. Travel medicine is performed best by those who practice that specialty exclusively. In addition, your primary care physician will not have all of the exotic vaccines required to prevent travel illnesses such as Typhoid fever, Yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, polio or rabies.

Travel Consultations

A comprehensive assessment gathers specific information regarding:

  • Personal health history
  • Prior immunizations
  • Prior travel
  • Current Travel itinerary
  • Climate and altitude at your destinations
  • Travel and lodging conditions
  • Seasonal disease-bearing insect activity
  • Rural vs. urban location of planned activities and excursions

This information then allows us to provide advice about the necessary immunizations, medications and travel products that will be helpful in ensuring a healthy trip.

In addition to the verbal information provided during your office consultation, each traveler will receive printed fact sheets containing the most current status of active health risks, basic country facts and U.S. State Department advisories and helpful contact information for each destination on the itinerary. We will also provide you with vaccination documentation certifications and special exemption letters as appropriate.

Immunizations, Prescriptions & Lab Tests

During your office visit, the clinic staff will provide the recommend vaccinations and prescriptions for any necessary travel related medications. All vaccines for routine preventative health needs as well as those necessary for international travel health—even exotic ones such as polio, typhoid, Yellow Fever Japanese Encephalitis, and rabies vaccines—are available in our office. See our full list of vaccines here .

It is often appropriate to prescribe preventative and/or treatment medications for altitude illness, motion sickness, malaria, traveler’s diarrhea, jet lag and traveler’s insomnia. With both physician and R.N. members on our staff, our clinic is able to write prescriptions during your office visit—unlike the local Health Department clinics , which do not have a physician available to write medication prescriptions. When appropriate, our physician can also order and interpret any necessary lab and x-ray testing.

Travel products and supplies

For your convenience, our clinic provides on-site many essential travel products for all your travel health needs. All items have been selected and approved by the clinic’s medical director, a board certified Internal Medicine physician, and by the International Society of Travel Medicine. See a list of our travel related products.

College-bound students & International Aid Workers

Students can obtain meningitis vaccinations and any other immunizations they may require for college entrance. A more comprehensive assessment and all necessary immunizations are available for the traveling disaster aid worker or students preparing to study abroad.

Safety and Political Advisories

As part of the pre-travel office visit, the travel health specialists will provide you with detailed printouts of active travel risks on a country specific basis.

Floodwaters officially shut down I-29 in Iowa. How long it will last and where to detour:

kc abroad travel

Iowa Department of Transportation officials expect to reopen Interstate 29 next week after rising waters caused it to shut down in both directions on the west side of the state early Wednesday morning.

The rising Missouri River caused officials to close I-29 from 25th Street at the north edge of Council Bluffs to the I-29/880 interchange near Loveland. The portion of I-680 west of I-29 in Iowa also is closed.

Officials started the process of closing I-29 around midnight and were finished by 1 a.m., said Austin Yates, a DOT traffic operations engineer.

“Right now based on the current river level forecast we’re expecting water over the roads through Monday evening,” Yates said, but added re-opening could take longer depending on how much debris and damage is left behind.

“We’re hoping once the water recedes, we’ll open in one or two days,” Yates said.

More: Northwest Iowans work to save their homes as rivers overtop levees, force evacuations

He said they've seen encouraging reports from northwest Iowa as floodwaters start to recede after rivers reached historic levels over the last several days . The Missouri River at Omaha is expected to crest at moderate flood stage Saturday, according to the National Water Prediction Service.

Travelers should follow a signed detour that will start at the I-29/880 interchange near Loveland, continue east to the I-80/880 interchange, and then southwest on I-80 to Council Bluffs. If you are driving between Iowa and Nebraska, you should use I-80. Local traffic in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area should follow the signed detour.

Drivers are advised to not enter a water-covered roadway and not to travel around barricades or fencing.

I Get Amazon Delivered Wherever I Travel. Here's How

Commentary: Amazon ships to six continents. Here's what to keep in mind if you need to purchase something while traveling.

kc abroad travel

When I left the US eight years ago to live the life of a digital nomad, there were conveniences I thought I'd be giving up as I traveled globally. I've spent most of my adult life ordering and getting items from Amazon, and I assumed the sun had set on the amazingness of getting almost anything I wanted with just a few clicks and two-day shipping.

Meet industry creators, contributors and emerging thought leaders that have paired with CNET’s award-winning editorial team to provide you with unique content from different perspectives.

Medellin, Colombia, was one of the first countries I decided to live in long term. I could move there and live in the country as a foreigner because I applied for a student visa to study Spanish. I signed a lease for a fully furnished apartment in my favorite part of the city (Poblado), got a Colombian national ID, registered for the national health care system and decided to furnish my apartment and give it as much of a homey feel as possible.

What was incredible was finding out Amazon ships to Colombia! Through AmazonGlobal , I can get Amazon orders shipped to me on six continents. Having the comforts of home and specific tech needs available on Amazon gave me a bit more confidence that I could live a digital nomad life.

I've traveled to 88 countries and lived in a dozen. Here's what it's like to receive Amazon deliveries while abroad.

I can get the gadgets I need

I've gotten many great deals and gadgets through Amazon over the years. One of my favorite shopping events is Prime Day , because I can get what I want and need in a budget-friendly way. It was nice to shop on Prime Day and get some items I needed while being in another country.

Through Prime Day, I've been able to buy Anker extension cords , bamboo sheets (that I travel with everywhere now), an iPad Air , a laptop stand, AirPods and a webcam . I had these items shipped to me while I lived in Colombia, Malaysia and Japan. When I needed specific tools like microphones or webcams, I could order on Amazon when they were too expensive or country-specific locally (in either language or configuration).

Amazon makes it easy to get the  gadgets that help me work abroad and stay connected to family, and it does so in an easy way. As usual, I order on the app, and my Amazon items are shipped to me. I get notifications when the package is shipped, when it clears customs in the country I'm in, and when Amazon or its local partner is on the way to where I am with the delivery.

I can still get the comforts of home while working abroad

One thing no one tells you about living a digital nomad lifestyle is that you'll experience loneliness and miss the comforts of home. You come to miss your favorite restaurants, getting coffee at your local coffee shop, and the little items that make your living space feel cozy. When I discovered that Amazon shipped internationally, I ordered items that made me feel more at home.

While in Japan, I ordered the bamboo sheets I always had in the States. In Malaysia, I got an iPad so I could watch TV in bed (using a VPN ) and FaceTime more comfortably with family. In Colombia, I ordered Christmas knickknacks to decorate my apartment for the holidays and relive a ritual I'd enjoyed for years.

Home can mean different things to different people. For me, home is wherever I'm traveling and living as long as I can make it my own. Local finds are great and make each place special, but I like that I can also lean on Amazon when needed for some everyday items.

Saving money on Amazon means I have more room in my budget

Amazon has great prices, especially during its Prime Day sales. I've been able to save money shopping on Amazon and use the savings for activities in the country I'm visiting. Living a digital nomad lifestyle has meant learning to manage my expenses well, especially with the costs of travel. I've kept expenses low, getting items on Amazon whenever possible.

If you want to be a digital nomad, already live that lifestyle, or just want what you need while traveling, consider using those AmazonGlobal perks. You can get almost everything you need at a good price, shipped to you in countries all over the world.

This Western State Is Leading the 'Relocation Wave' in the U.S. — Here's Where Everyone Is Moving

"Should I move to Australia" is a frequent search.

kc abroad travel

Courtesy of Giovanna Lambroia

Moving abroad is a thrilling proposition. I would know, I did it three years ago, emigrating from the United States to Portugal to pursue my PhD. And it appears I'm not alone in my desire to pick up and try something new. According to new research by the luggage shipping experts at  MyBaggage.com , thousands of Americans are also searching for how to relocate abroad . But no one is searching this more than those living in one particular western state — Wyoming.

To find out which states are searching for moving abroad advice more than any other, the company analyzed all 50 states and territories in the U.S. based on the number of times per month each Googles a term related to moving abroad. The team explained in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure that the data includes 285 keywords, such as “best countries to move to,” “ best European countries to live in ,” “minimum wage by country 2024,” “should I move to Australia,” and “legal requirements to move to Portugal.”

The number of searches for each term was then tallied up for a total score for each state. The researchers then compared the number of searches to the population to calculate the number of searches per 100,000 people. After looking at all this data, the research showed that Wyoming is the state "most eager to relocate," with an average of 115 searches per 100,000 residents and an average of 672 searches per month.

"Among Wyoming's top search terms are 'best countries in the world,' 'best countries to live in,' 'countries that speak English,' 'best countries for Americans to move to,' and 'move to Canada from the USA,'" the findings stated.

“Wyoming has been ranked the 5th best place to live, according to a recent study. However, Wyomingites seem most eager to leave the state and settle elsewhere," Paul Stewart, the managing director of MyBaggage.com, said. As for why they want to move, it's anyone's guess, but as Stewart shared, “Americans leave the U.S. for a number of factors, including better job prospects, a lower cost of living, better quality of life, studying abroad, better healthcare, marriage and relationship, or just travel and adventure."

In a close second is Vermont, with an average of 725 monthly searches and 112 per 100,000 residents. "Vermont residents are searching for the following phrases: 'countries that speak English,' 'move to Canada from the USA,' 'how to move to Canada,' and 'best countries for Americans to move to,'" the findings added.

Joining these two states at the top of the list is Alaska in third with 101 searches per 100,000 residents and an average of 738 searches per month, followed by North Dakota, Hawaii, Montana, Rhode Island, Delaware, Oregon, and Colorado, rounding out the top 10.

As for who is happy staying stateside, the research noted that Mississippi is the state that is least interested in moving abroad, with just 50 searches per 100,000 residents.

"If you are considering moving elsewhere, it is important to consider several factors. Understanding your tax responsibilities in both the U.S. and your destination country is recommended, as depending on the destination, you may need to file taxes in both places," Stewart said. “Legal and immigration requirements are also important, as you need to determine what type of visa or residence permit you need and the process for obtaining long-term residency or citizenship if that’s your goal.”

Though if this all feels too overwhelming, there's always another proposition: just move to a new state. According to a May study by the storage company PODS, South Carolina and North Carolina are the top destinations for Americans who want to relocate to a new state, with Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina, tied for first place as the most popular destinations. Warm weather, waterside spots, and happening cultural scenes? Sounds like a win-win to us without having to whip out our passports.
