Tested by mum Nicola Widger for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this steriliser to other mums because it's quick and easy to use. It is big enough for one bottle, and you can choose to either microwave or cold water sterilise. It even comes with free tablets to use. The instructions are very clear to understand. It is also not big and bulky to carry around! A great product!

How did this product make your life easier?

This steriliser has been my new best friend! After breastfeeding my daughter for a few months, we decided to try giving her a bottle or two a day. Having to unpack a big bulky steriliser to do one bottle a day was annoying so when this arrived on my doorstep it was fab! This small handy steriliser has been perfect for popping in the microwave, either here or at other people's houses.

Would you choose this product to win?

This item has been perfect for our needs. The brand name is well-known and it's a well-built item that has not let us down even after being used so often. The shape of the product is good, you can stand or lie the product down and the air vent on the top is a great idea.

What changes would you make to this product?

The only one thing I would change about this product is maybe the lid as there has sometimes been some leakage. Apart from that I loved it!

Tested by mum Belinda White for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Yes, mainly because it’s a good size for travel, it’s sturdy and doesn’t leak. I was amazed at how simple and easy it was to use, it fills up really quickly. Therefore, I would recommend it to friends and family because it’s definitely worth the money.

This product makes life so much easier when going on a long journey as the water stays sterilised for 24 hours. The bottle really has been a lifesaver! I would definitely buy one and recommend it to others.

I really love this product and love the Milton brand. It should definitely win and I will do what I can to make more mums aware of this product, as me and my friends were not previously aware of it.

The only thing that could potentially change is the lid, which is sometimes a bit tricky to get on and off the bottle. Otherwise the product is fabulous!

Tested by mum Rhiannon Welch for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

I would recommend this purely for the simplicity. Also because it offers two different methods of sterilising which will suit a range of families. It’s small enough to transport and made to a decent standard and quality. You can also trust that the items have been properly sterilised. I really loved the fact that one solution lasts a whole 24 hours.

Life was easier given that there were two ways to sterilise, either hot or cold. Cold sterilising was very easy and quick to set up and hot was equally as straightforward, as long as the steam vent was left closed. Both methods ensured that the bottle stayed sterilised for 24 hours which was unbelievably handy for travelling and when out and about.

I would choose this item to win a Mother & Baby award, due to the size and the quality. It is simple and easy to use, and suitable for every mum. It would be ideal for those who go camping, for example, because it gives families more time with each other as there is less time spent in the kitchen. I’m really impressed with the overall design.

I don’t think this product needs to change! Maybe a bigger range of colours or sizes? Or a little carry handle might be a useful design feature.

Tested by mum Stevie-Jade West for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

I would recommend this to other mothers who travel a lot throughout the day, as I think it may be most useful to them. This is because the bottle is small enough to fit in a baby bag and convenient on the go. The product is also fairly easy to use and you feel like your bottles remain hygienic for baby to use.

For me this product wasn't hugely useful because you can only sterilise one bottle at a time and I found it easier having several bottles ready. Having said that, I understand how it may help mums who are on the go a lot!

I don’t think I would choose this product above others on the market as I wouldn't use it enough to justify buying it. However, the size really stands out to me size as it's easy to carry around.

I would not say this product is a necessity for me, and therefore cannot really comment myself. But I am certain that other mums would find it very beneficial to their needs.

Tested by mum Lucy White for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

I would recommend this Milton Travel Sterilizer because of how compact and well-made it is. The plastic feels very strong and the lid fits on tightly so there is no worry of it leaking. It is ideal for going away as, if you don't have a microwave available, it can be used with just cold water and a sterilizing tablet.

When going on holiday or away for a couple of nights, the thought of sterilising bottles is always a worry. With this travel steriliser, you can sterilise bottles wherever you are because there are two methods available, either hot or cold sterilisation. I also found it useful for sterilising teething toys!

I think that this product should win as it is nice and compact and feels like it will last a long time. It is the ideal size for a travel steriliser as it's not too big, but will fit in any size bottle. The lid fits on very securely and it is microwave safe. It is a simple design and even more simple to use.

I wouldn't really change anything about this product. My one complaint was about the Milton sterilising tablets that come with it, as they left a chemical residue on the bottle. It says there is no need rinse before drinking, but I wouldn’t want to drink out of it knowing there was residue still there. Therefore, I feel this could be improved, otherwise the product is great!

Tested by mum Nancy Paterson for the M&B Awards 2016:

Why would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow mum?

It's perfect for taking away with you! I took it with us when we went to stay with my parents and it was fab! It's very easy to use and does the job well. It looks good and is designed well. I was very impressed and will be taking it on holiday with us this summer.

How does this product make your life easier as a mum?

It is easy to use and looks good. It made sterilising my babies bottles really quick and easy. I don't like the smell of sterilising tablets and don't want to have to take my big microwave steriliser away with me when I go away for a few days - I have enough baby things I have to take as it is! I was confident they were sterilised properly and would definitely use it again.

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

I wouldn't change anything - it's perfect! Just the right size for one bottle and not too big to transport. It's really simple to use and a clever design. I like the flat side of the steriliser so it can lie flat in the microwave and not roll around!

Tested by mum Stefania Fleming for the M&B Awards 2016:

I really liked how compact the steriliser was. I found it the perfect size for me and my baby as we mainly breastfeed and only occasionally use bottles, I could see how some mums who have more bottles to sterilise would prefer to have a bigger steriliser. It would be useful to pack in your changing bag for a day out if you needed to sterilise things on the go but maybe a bit small to take on holiday for example for bottle fed babies. I also like that you have the option to use it as a cold water steriliser or a microwave one.

The steriliser is easy to pack in a changing bag and transport. If you don't have access to a microwave you can use it as a cold water steriliser.

I've noticed that some of Milton's other sterilisers come with a few sterilising tablets to get you started before having to buy a pack. It would be useful if a few were included with the steriliser.

Tested by mum Shilo Moody for the M&B Awards 2016:

This travel steriliser is a brilliant product. Fantastic for nights away at a friend’s house or when you are going on holidays. It’s much easier to pack/carry than an electric steam steriliser or a large microwave steriliser (which you then have to ensure where you are going has a microwave!).

I like using this steriliser when away as I have an older child and by not needing steam I don't have to worry about my older son potentially burning himself if he touches it. It’s less bulky than traditional sterilisers which take up valuable packing space when going on holidays.

While sterilising time is relatively quick, it would be great if there was a slightly bigger version which would accommodate 2 bottles at once in the solution for families who have twins/triplets etc.

2015 – Bottle Feeding Award

Milton’s Solo Travel Steriliser is not only great for holidays or day a day out but also as a quick ‘n’ easy to gadget to use around the house. It has dual purpose functionality, sterilising not only bottles but teething toys, pacifiers and other small bits – in the microwave or with cold water and a tablet.

The steriliser is a convenient travel size but it does have a tendency to leak (ever so slightly) when not standing upright – otherwise, a really useful, value-for-money product.

2014 – Shortlisted for 'Best Travel Product Under £25' Award

The Milton Solo Travel Steriliser is designed for ‘out and about’ travelling. It’s water tight and easy to store but can be a bit of a faff to use. It fits only one bottle and teat (not the bottle cap) and requires a quarter of a Milton tablet for the sterilisation process, which is fine, except the tablets don’t snap along the lines (annoying!) and it means carting around a container to store the rest of the tablet, or throwing it away (a waste!). There are also no tongs to remove items and it would be good if details re times and amounts were written on the steriliser somewhere as it is probably going to be used away from home.

However, it is worth remembering that the product is intended as a ‘solo steriliser’, presumably to save on space when travelling; there are other sterilisers on the market that would sterilise more than one bottle, if that’s your preference.

The steriliser can also be used in the microwave, which makes it versatile, and it does work quickly.

Highly recommended.

Reader Wendy Armstrong, 34, from Cumbria, mum to Aurora, tested the Milton Solo Travel Steriliser and says:

‘Microwave for two minutes, plus cool-down time, or use as a cold water steriliser for 15 minutes. The contents stay sterile for 24 hours. It holds one bottle, so is handy for a short stay or overnight trip. It’s quite bulky, though, and didn’t fit into my change bag as easily as the others tested.’

Milton Cold Water Steriliser review

Milton’s cold water sterilising solution has retained its foothold in the market for 70 years, even when competing with the design advances of electric steam and microwave models. There’s a simplicity and low-tech flexibility about it that lends itself well to scaling up for large piles of gear – one of the reasons it’s popular on maternity wards and with parents of multiple babies.

By Rachel Jeffcoat | Last updated Apr 17, 2024

milton cold water steriliser

Good for parents who

Have multiple babies, use a lot of bottles per day or want to sterilise a variety of items including breast pumps , toys and dummies

Want a solution that doesn’t affect the energy bill

Can be easily scaled up and down for different quantities of equipment and equipment in awkward shapes

Inexpensive to buy and maintain

Items remain sterile for 24 hours and can be added and removed as necessary

The large bucket should be kept out of reach when in use and will take up the sink or a reasonable amount of counter space

The sterilisation fluid smells strongly of chlorine – so will the baby equipment and your kitchen

Materials: Plastic

Included: Container and weighted grid

Available from a wide range of retailers, including Boots and Amazon

RRP: £17.50 – sterilising tablets sold separately at £1.50 for 28

We used a Milton Cold Water Steriliser - it was so easy.

What’s the Milton Cold Water Steriliser like to purchase and assemble?

The Milton Cold Water Steriliser is widely available from retailers like Boots and Amazon. It’s 25 × 16.5 × 24.5cm, so not impossibly bulky and the packaging is minimal – just a cardboard sleeve containing the instructions, which is more environmentally-friendly than many of the best sterilisers we tested like the plastic-wrapped Dr Brown's Deluxe Bottle Steriliser and the Nuby Natural Touch Steriliser and Dryer.

There’s no assembly required – a bucket is rather self-explanatory, after all – but be aware that it will need sterilisation tablets or fluid, and the steriliser doesn’t come with any.

Our tester, Maisie, felt that this was rather a missed opportunity for Milton to promote their own products and might catch people out, especially if they’re buying online. The tablets are £1.50 for 28, which isn’t excessive, but there are some other own-brand tablets that are cheaper still. Tesco, for example, do a 56-pack for 75p.

You won’t need to wash the container before first use as the fluid you’ll fill it with is, itself, sterile.

Is the Milton Cold Water Steriliser safe?

The container is made from a sturdy plastic that won’t degrade and should stand up to any amount of rough handling.

It comes with a lid that locks closed and a spout to make emptying it easier. It will be heavy when full so it should be lifted carefully if necessary and kept out of reach of children so that it can’t be pulled over onto a child’s head.

There’s an online instruction video on Milton’s website, which gives the relevant volumes of water and sterilising fluid/tablets if you lose the instructions. The website also includes a lot of information about sterilisation and best practice in general, which is reassuring – their FAQs page is particularly good.

The sterilising solution’s active agent is sodium hypochlorite, which is a bleach, but Milton manufacture it using a purification process that removes the heavy metal ions.

This means that the sterilisation solution isn’t toxic or unstable – if a child ingests it, Milton advise giving them a drink of milk to help ‘neutralise’ the solution and contacting a GP if you’re very concerned. As always, it’s best to keep the unit well away from little fingers.

What’s the steriliser like in day-to-day use?

Milton's five-litre container fits six baby bottles of any brand, plus breast pump parts and toys in any configuration. Items can be taken out or put in as required so there’s no need to wait to run a cycle or leave things out because they don’t fit.

The process involves dissolving tablets or fluid into the container of water and submerging items in it for 15 minutes as per manufacturer guidelines – the NHS recommends 30 minutes . More items can be added as and when they’re used.

The weighted grid supplied keeps all the items under the water so they remain sterile for as long as they’re in the container (up to 24 hours). It’s important to make sure that there are no air bubbles trapped in the bottles or teats before leaving to sterilise.

If you wanted to, you could also use any volume of water in any clean container – as long as you use the correct number of tablets for the volume of water added.

Overall, the Milton Cold Water Steriliser is incredibly straightforward and flexible for those using up a lot of bottles or expressing full-time. Just be aware that the solution will make your kitchen smell like a swimming pool, whether or not the lid is closed.

Once the required 15 minutes are up, each item can be shaken and used without further rinsing – though our tester found her baby equipment smelled of chlorine afterwards and felt hesitant about giving it to her baby (it’s perfectly safe to do so, but the smell is rather off-putting).

As the Milton Cold Water Steriliser isn’t electric, it can be kept anywhere from the sink to the garden. It can also be thrown into a kitchen unit, the under-stairs cupboard or bathroom for storage, which our tester found appealing.

It could easily be transported without damage, but it is large so may not be the best choice for travelling.

The best steriliser for me has been the Milton's Cold Water Steriliser. Definitely the easiest and most convenient as you can add and take things out when needed and it will all stay sterile.

Is the Milton Cold Water Steriliser easy to keep clean?

Milton recommend cleaning the unit with soapy water and drying well once a week.

In practice, the container doesn’t have any nooks and crannies and doesn’t collect dust, so it’s low-maintenance in the extreme.

How does it look?

Alas, there aren’t many ways to dress up a bucket and, sensibly, Milton haven’t tried.

It’s basic and utilitarian, coming in white and grey, and is unlikely to be out on the counter when not in use.

Is it good value for money?

The steriliser costs £17.50, and is often on sale from various retailers, so it’s a small initial cost.

Milton’s branded tablets will set you back another £1.50 per month – and other, own-brand tablets are cheaper still – so ongoing expenses are minimal.

Final verdict

There’s no need to run multiple ‘cycles’, it won’t add to your energy bill and can be scaled up for large quantities of equipment.

Seven decades on, the Milton Cold Water Steriliser remains a gratifyingly simple and adaptable solution for families of all shapes and sizes.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
