Also, remember to bring your ID and consider visiting during off-peak hours like weekday mornings to enjoy a more intimate experience and avoid the crowds."

What is Coors Brewery Tour?

The Coors Brewery Tour is a journey into the heart of one of America's most beloved beer brands, Coors Brewing Company, located in Golden, just a stone's throw away from Denver. It offers visitors an intimate look at the brewing process, from the selection of ingredients to the meticulous methods of producing their renowned beers. Participating in the tour, you're not just walking through an industrial facility; you're stepping into a slice of Colorado's rich brewing history.

Chicago might be referred to as the 'Second City', but boy, its architecture is first class and world-famous! Some of the most inventive architects...

As you navigate through the brewery, you're treated to sights, sounds, and smells that are both educationally stimulating and immensely pleasurable for any beer enthusiast. The tour culminates with some refreshing samples for those of age, providing a taste that's as fresh as it gets. It's particularly known for the quality of its water, which is sourced from the nearby Rocky Mountains and is a critical component of the beers' distinctive flavors.

History of Coors Brewery Tour

The roots of Coors Brewery stretch back to 1873 when Adolph Coors and Jacob Schueler opened their operation in Golden, Colorado. The brewery survived prohibition by diversifying their products and even now, it stands as a testament to resilience and innovation. The tour itself has become an institution, offering a window into brewing operations for generations of visitors.

What's fascinating is the continued balance of traditional brewing techniques with modern technology at Coors. Over the years, the tour has evolved, reflecting changes in the brewing industry and in public interest. But throughout all that time, the focus on quality and craftsmanship has been unwavering, which, I reckon, visitors can witness firsthand on the tour.

Why is Coors Brewery Tour Important?

Coors Brewery Tour is an emblematic part of Colorado's cultural and industrial landscape. The state is known for its robust beer culture, and Coors is a major player in that realm. For many, the tour is a rite of passage, an educational journey that highlights the significance of the beer industry in Colorado.

The importance of the tour also echoes the evolution of beer in America. Coors has been there through it all, surviving tough times and flourishing in good ones. Plus, it's not just about beer; it's about community, history, and the American Dream. Think about it, what does it take for a brewery to endure and prosper through a century and a half? That's a story worth telling—and tasting—on the Coors Brewery Tour.

Things to Do & See at Coors Brewery Tour

When you embark on the Coors Brewery Tour, you're in for a host of experiences. First off, there's the brewing process itself, which is a marvel of science and tradition. Watch the mash tun work its magic, turning malt and water into wort. Then there's the fermentation area, where yeast diligently crafts that wort into beer.

Don't forget the packaging side of things where an intricate ballet of machines fills, caps, and labels the beers at an almost dizzying pace. Imagine standing there as hundreds of bottles whiz by, soon to be enjoyed across the nation. Next, there's the historic aspect; you'll see historic photos, vintage bottles, and old advertisements that paint a picture of Coors' storied past.

And of course, you'll have the opportunity to taste a variety of beers at the end of the tour. Whether you're a fan of the classic Coors Banquet or you're more into the latest craft offerings from the Colorado Native series, there's something to please every palate. Just picture it: clinking glasses with new friends against the backdrop of the breathtaking Rocky Mountains. Now that's an experience that goes beyond your average brewery tour.

Coors Brewery Tour

Coors Brewery Tour – Golden

The largest single brewery in the world, Coors Brewing Company, is located in downtown Golden. Tours and tastings are offered year-round and are open to guests of all ages as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Explore a live working factory where every phase of the beer-making process is observed. The tours cost a fee and are self-guided with headsets available. There are learning stations around with pre-recorded descriptions. Reservations are required for all guests.

Hailing from Prussia, Adolph Coors, and Jacob Schueler established the brewery in Golden in 1873. The mountain on the Coors can is based on a Rocky Mountain peak in southwest Colorado.

Touring the Coors Brewery in Golden

There are two types of tours: self-guided (year-long) and guided tours (seasonally). The traditional 30-minute self-guided tour has educational stations and individual headsets. You get to enjoy a complimentary sample and three 10 oz beers afterward. During slower months, a live tour is given and they run for about 30 minutes.

You can also go on the Sampling-only tour where you go straight to the tasting room and try three complimentary beers. This is often what the locals do and you are free to partake in this tour daily. Enjoy some of Coors’s classic, seasonal, and even test-market beers. The whole operation lasts 1 – 1.5 hours including the shuttle, tour, and beer tastings. Drinking time may vary.

Getting There

Parking for the tour is located at 13th and Ford Streets, one block from the brewery. A free shuttle takes you downtown to the Coors factory and the driver usually tells you about the city of Golden on the way.

Tours and imbibing at the bar get busy during peak season, so plan weekdays and off-peak times when possible.

Coors Brewery Tour – Tour Information and Tips for Visiting

Coors brewery tour bus

As a Minnesotan, and one from the land of sky blue waters, it’s sacrilegious for me to claim my love of the beer which is born in the Rocky Mountains — Coors Light. But, I unabashedly continue to order my silver bullets and after a visit to the Coors Brewery in Golden, Colorado, I am even more of a patron today.

Coors Brewery Tours – Golden, Colorado

Tours are about $20 per person. Check the website for hours. You can make reservations online or over the phone. It’s really better than I had anticipated and I think you’ll have fun, too!

Booking Reservations for a Coors Brewery Tour

The first and most commendable thing I noticed when I booked my brewery tour (over the phone) was the tour booker told us we’d need to present ID and vaccination card upon check in. After traveling extensively in LA this summer and fall, I had been waiting for the time I’d have to pull out my vax card, but it never came. Here, we did get carded for both age and vaccination. The information upfront was extremely helpful for planning.

Brews from the Coors Brewery

If you have a larger group, book NOW. Do not wait! Luckily, there were only two of us, and we were super flexible, so we were able to find a two-person slot. Otherwise, it was booked out for a few weeks. That was in April. It will only get worse with tourist season underway.

New Tour, Different Flow

There are only about a dozen patrons on each Coors Brewery tour. A tour guide is with you at all times and tours last about an hour. You get three 8 oz. beers throughout the tour (if you are legal to drink, children are allowed on tour, but are given a different bracelet to designate them as underage.) The beers are perfectly paced with the information and duration of the tour.

Banquet Coors tour bus

Bonus: You get to keep the recycled Coors cups from your experience as fun souvenirs.

This is a different model than previous tours, so if you’ve done it before and didn’t’ love the experience, try it again. This was really a GREAT date for an afternoon of fun. Everything is streamlined and clean and the pace is perfect.

Coors Brewery Tours are Perfect for an Afternoon Date

We weren’t sure that we wanted to do a Coors brewery tour. After a weekend in Denver and the surrounding cities, trekking all over the front country and into the Rockies, we agreed this was one of the most carefree and simple fun memories we made. If you’re a beer enthusiast, this is a great time. Lots of bite-size history tidbits and sips of the cold, fresh beer made a great date! The beer is made with Colorado Rocky Mountain water. They keep it local, proudly. (Don’t worry: I asked–it’s NOT made from the stream on location.)

Coors brands

If you ARE coming from Denver, before you enjoy the tour, enjoy this amazing street taco joint we found which sets up the afternoon for success! Golden is a short drive from Denver (about 40 minutes from the Denver International Airport), but it’s worth the trip to experience the Coors brewery tour.

The largest brewery in the world at Golden, Colorado

  • by Ric Garrido
  • June 18, 2012

The brewery has a capacity of 22 million barrels of beer and a barrel of beer is 31 gallons. That means a barrel of beer can fill about 330 bottles or cans of 12 oz. beers. The brewery production capacity is something like 7 billion beers a year. And I drank three of those 7 billion beers during the tour.

You must be 21 years of age to tour the brewery and have beer samples, although children are apparently welcome (see comments) as long as you don’t share your beer with the minors. And if you are in a hurry, you can rush through all the brewery educational displays and just focus on the free beer samples at the end of the tour.

TBEX Denver 1 094

Hey, I am admittedly a beer snob. While I am highly unlikely to drink a Coors or Coors Light beer if there are other options, I was surprised to learn that the brewery makes some lesser known beer brands that I can honestly recommend to people who like more flavorful and hoppy beers.

TBEX Denver 1 047

This was the second stop on our TBEX Beer Road Rally and the brewery tour space did not have many other visitors at 10am on a Friday morning.

TBEX Denver 1 053

The ingredients of pure beer.

TBEX Denver 1 058

Hops give beer a bitter flavor. The acids in hops also help stabilize beer by acting as an anti-microbial agent.

TBEX Denver 1 059

Personally, I prefer European Noble hop varieties due to the lower acid levels than most American hops. Thirty years of drinking beer has made me less tolerant of high acid Cascade hop beer common to American microbrew beers.

Hops grow in climbing vines. Most hops in the US are grown in the Cascade  Mountain region valleys of Oregon and Washington. Sonoma County in California used to be a major hop growing region in the mid-20th century, but I think wine grape production turned out to be more profitable and replaced the hops.

TBEX Denver 1 050

Barley is the other key ingredient for beer.

TBEX Denver 1 056

The German beer purity law from 1516 limited beer ingredients to water, hops and barley. The rationale was to keep cereal grains like wheat and rye reserved for bakers and prevent price competition for grains between bakeries and brewers. Coors Golden Brewery uses 500 tons of barley per day.

One of the interesting facts I heard on the tour is the used barley and grains at the brewery is sold off for cattle feed. In high snow winters the brewery donates used corn grain mash to feed wildlife in the Rockies when there are low food sources. This was a statement made by the brewery tour guide for our group, but interestingly this article from the Denver Post states Coors did not respond to their request for an article on beer mash recycling.

In the US other cereal grains like corn and rice are often used for beer flavor. These grains are far cheaper than barley.

TBEX Denver 1 057

The process of beer making is relatively simple. Producing a consistent flavor is the challenge, especially when production is large scale industrial production of a lager beer like Coors and Coors Light. Slight flavor differences between batches of brew are not a major issue in a microbrewery, but when you have a global product like Coors, then any variation in flavor is a major issue for a global product. While I might not care for the flavor of Coors, I respect the quality control processes in place to produce a consistent flavor over billions of beers produced annually.

TBEX Denver 1 062

One of the travel writers in my tour group commented on how the smell of fermenting mash is an enjoyable sensation. The aroma brought back memories of my homebrew days. Each kettle shown here holds 600 barrels.

TBEX Denver 1 066

Each brewery in Germany historically had a unique heraldic lion with a distinct tail. Here is the lion herald for Coors.

TBEX Denver 1 075

From 1985 to 1989 I worked in a dairy food processing quality control laboratory in Sacramento, California while I earned my B.S. degree in fermentation science from the University of California, Davis. Many of my classmates went to work in California wineries and the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Fairfield, California.

TBEX Denver 1 072

Coors Brewery has over 200 quality taste testers. Sounds like a great job  – right? I was a quality control taster for ice cream for several years. I couldn’t eat ice cream for a decade after that job. I am glad I didn’t have a taster job at a brewery.

Here are examples of 21st century beer packaging.

And finally we made it to the tasting room.

TBEX Denver 1 102

Batch 19 and Colorado Native were two beers I think I could drink all day. I particularly enjoyed Batch 19 pre-prohibition style lager beer. The recipe for Batch 19 was discovered in 2004 in the Coors Brewery archives for a beer style produced prior to Prohibition in 1919. Batch 19 beer won the Silver Medal at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival.

TBEX Denver 1 095

Of the 1,568 breweries in the U.S. operating in 1910, only 750 reopened after 1933 when the Prohibition Act was repealed. In Colorado the sale of beer was illegal from 1916 to 1934.

The Coors family business survived the 18 years of Prohibition by producing porcelain cooking ware and scientific equipment in Golden, Colorado. The brewing kettles were used to make malted milk and other food products.

Coors Light is currently the #2 beer by sales the U.S. at 18.2 million barrels for 2011. Bud Light is #1.

TBEX Denver 1 096

At least there is still real craft beer being brewed for beer connoisseurs at the world’s largest single-site brewery.

TBEX Denver 1 105

Thanks to the great group leader representatives of the Colorado Tourism Office for this TBEX 2012 Beer Road Rally.

For a MUCH smaller and more genuine experience – plus far superior beer – don’t miss Great Divide Brewery right in the heart of Denver 🙂

' src=

@Robbie – This Coors Golden Brewery tour was followed up by a tour of TommyKnocker Microbrewery in Idaho Springs, Colorado where we watched a woman handfilling bottles into cases and carrying them across the floor to stack on a pallet.

I plan to offer a microbrewery view of the beer brewing production process in another post.

' src=

I was fortunate to receive a private tour of the brewery back in the early ’80’s. As a non-beer drinker, I still found it quite impressive. Are they still doing/giving the sample of “pre-taxed beer”?

' src=

I don’t work for Coors but I do work for the City of Golden and I’m stationed AT the Coors Tour parking lot. You do not need to be 21 to take the tour; people bring their kids all the time. Obviously, they can’t enjoy a beer but they can still enjoy the tour.

Also, like Robbie said, there are much more intimate experiences in Colorado beer. Great Divide (and Tommyknocker) is still pretty big, actually, when you compare it to places like Denver Beer Co., Renegade Brewing Company, River North Brewery, Wit’s End Brewing Company, CAUTION: Brewing Company, and Golden’s second-biggest brewery Golden City Brewery.

@Chris – thanks for correcting me on the 21 years of age terms. There were no children present when we toured the brewery and the staff were careful to check all our identification.

Highly recommend this tour if you are in Denver. If you are into how beer is made, it is fun to walk through. The only downside is the wait. We went on a Saturday around 11, and the line was about an hour to get through. You can not walk or drive directly to the plant. You will park in a lot, and wait in line where you are given a "golden ticket", they will then shuttle you to the plant. Ultimately the best reason to go are the 3 free beers you get at the end. They had a stout called "Naptime Stout" that was great.

Tour guides lack knowledge. Took family twice and hoped the second time we would have had a more knowledgeable guide. Nope, was worse than the first. If you're going to charge, train your guides more and test their knowledge.

Photo of Huey N.

If you like spending a total of 2-3 hours to wait to look at placards and listen to a pre-recorded guide, then this is your jam. If the point of the shuttle is to stagger the guests coming in, I guess that kinda makes sense. They need to do a better job of communicating that you can't bring in any kind of purses or bags. People were being turned away at the door left and right. This is a silly rule anyways. This tour cost us 3 hours of our vacation time that could have been spent doing things other than waiting for a five minute shuttle ride. PS. I still prefer PBR.

Golden, CO reminds me of some small towns back in GA. It's a beautiful town, but it stands out since it happens to be home to one of the biggest breweries in the nation. There is a reason touring Miller-Coors is a must during a visit to Golden. There is a large parking lot for the shuttle to the brewery and tour center. Admission is $10 for non CO residents, $5 for residents. For the price of admission, you get to learn all about the interesting history behind Adolph Coors's vision, the process of what goes into making the beer, 3 free drinks of your choice, a sample of Coors Banquet or Light, and a commemorative glass. You get your money's worth as an out-of-state tourist and a steal as a resident! This is a fun tour I would recommend at least once if you are interested in beer, big business or history. I give 4 stars since it is Coors and, while good, does not stack against some of the craft breweries throughout the state. I visited at the close of touring on Sunday, and they will start anyone who shows up before the parking lot closes. Just mind the tour times and plan to have a great experience!

I'm a Coors fan now!! What's not to love about locally brewed beer from the source using the mountain spring water filtered through! Me and a couple close friends decided to check this out while in golden/Denver area. It's a free tour and free parking. Make sure you check the website for tours hours and parking/shuttle information. It wasn't crowded on a weekend I went and it is a self guided tour. They give each individual a remote like phone to push a button at each station to listen to each display. At the final end of the tour you arrive to the taproom to enjoy two free beers on tap. Kids are allowed as long as they are accompanied by an adult. The experience from learning the history to the actual brewery process (huge steel cans), lab, assembly line canning process, and taproom were great!! Note to self next time: plan for extra time to drink the brews instead of rush.

Great and the price is right. Free!!! The tour is informative. They give you audio sets and you go at your own pace. Staff is super pleasant. You also get three FREE full size beers to drink. If you are not a drinker they have free sodas and lemonade. No backpacks or purses allowed so leave in the car. But don't forget your ID. ENJOY

Worst welcome Process ever. Was greeted with a person that said we had to leave because we had a purse ... We walked all the way back to our hotel room in Golden and turned around and came back and saw the same people saying we can't go on the tour because we didn't go over where the bus station to get a bus ticket which was never told to us when we first walked in and told to leave. and that we could pay the same $10 toward him in and spend money and then get three pairs that you don't even feel to the top I will not recommend this place as it is a process of negativity instead of warmth and welcome Lots of complaining from the crowd Perfect you entrance process and inform people of your NoBAG rules.

What's better than a nice cold beer and a free tour when you are visiting Colorado, this place! Love that you can hear about Golden, CO and their history. It's only 20-30 mins away from Denver, CO. It's best to go early in the morning because the line to the tour will be an hour wait or more depending on the days. The tour around the facility is self audio tour. You get to learn about the Coors and its origin. Once you are done with the tour, you get 3 free beer tastings. Who doesn't like nice cold free beer? Definitely worth the time.

2) There is not enough available space for your group size on any of our available tour or sampling times.

3) We are closed or not offering brewery tours or that day.

4) Tour reservations have not yet released for that date.

Can I still come in if you are sold out?

Children under the age of 3 are free, while visitors ages 3-21 cost $10 per person. The tour covers a variety of topics that include manufacturing, agriculture, history, business, sustainability, and science that visitors of all ages will find interesting. Can I show up even though I booked my reservation for a different day?

We can only honor reservations on the time and date for which they were booked. We may not be able to accommodate guests who arrive at a different date or time from what was reserved.

Do you do private events?

Unfortunately, our facilities are not available to rent for private, non-company events. We highly encourage anyone looking to host an event in Golden to patronize some of our outside local businesses with event space.

We are running late, or our group is not all present. Can we still go?

We are not able to hold brewery tours for late or incomplete groups. Refunds will not be issued for groups who arrive late or incomplete. Due to high demand, we are typically unable to reschedule brewery tours for the same day or weekend.
