The Weeknd has finally detailed the new dates for his long-postponed North American tour, with the singer set to embark on his first-ever stadium tour this summer.

The first leg of the After Hours Til Dawn Tour begins July 8 with a hometown gig at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. After that, Abel Tesfaye will return to the football stadium confines of his Super Bowl halftime performance for 17 more shows at NFL venues spanning from Philadelphia to Los Angeles.

The Weeknd’s trek, then the After Hours World Tour, was originally set for 2020  and then  postponed until 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic; it was next rescheduled for early 2022 before the Weeknd opted to push the dates back again in order to bring his live experience to football stadiums.

Now dubbed the After Hours Til Dawn tour to incorporate his new LP Dawn FM , the first leg of the jaunt will now also feature Doja Cat as special guest. Check out the Weeknd’s site for ticket information.

The singer also launched his XO humanitarian fund in conjunction with the United Nations World Food Programme. The singer will donate one dollar from each ticket in addition to a $500,000 donation from the singer and an additional $1 million donation from World Food Program USA.

The Weeknd tour kicks off with an apocalyptic stadium rave in Philadelphia

after hours dawn fm tour

PHILADELPHIA – If The Weeknd’s “Dawn FM” album is the equivalent of a dance party in purgatory , his live show is nothing less than a rave before the apocalypse.

The emotionally intense singer-songwriter finally achieved liftoff with his After Hours Til Dawn stadium tour on July 14 at Lincoln Financial Field. The launch was not only a victim of COVID-19 postponements over the past two years, but also saw its initial kickoff date delayed last weekend in the performer’s hometown of Toronto, where a nationwide internet outage stymied venue operations.

That pent-up eagerness to perform emerged the moment The Weeknd, sporting a plastic face mask, rose from one of the burned-out building models erected as a part of a skyline on the main stage for “Alone Again,” from his massive 2020 album, “After Hours.”

From there, it was a blitz of chaotic lighting, beat drops and The Weeknd encouraging the sold-out crowd of more than 45,000 like an enthusiastic Peloton instructor as he poured his gorgeous upper range over a trio of “Dawn FM” tracks : “Gasoline,” “Sacrifice” and “How Do I Make You Love Me?”

Though no band was present (or at least seen), the music unfurled seamlessly and crisply as the man born Abel Tesfaye cavorted between the front stage and a runway that stretched the length of the field, often surrounded by mysterious dancers in full-body shrouds.

At 32, The Weeknd has already crafted record-breaking releases (in January, “Dawn FM” charted 24 songs on Billboard’s Global 200 chart),  headlined a Super Bowl halftime show , boycotted the Grammy Awards and now conceived an ambitious sprawl of a stadium spectacle that mostly flourishes.

The creative setup includes field seating that partially faces the runway rather than the main stage, giving the show an in-the-round vibe (a giant inflatable moon hangs at the other end of the stadium for reasons only The Weeknd could answer). Two small video screens attached to light towers faced those in the nether regions, but with the primary screen used only for aesthetics, more than half of the stadium was denied any close-ups of the singer.

But no one could refute The Weeknd’s unflagging energy, the scope of his catalog curated for the set list or his cool-guy vibe (after about six songs, he stripped off a black coat that had to be sweltering in Philly’s summer humidity, but retained the black gloves that matched the rest of his ensemble).

His appealing blend of New Wave and pop with smidgens of hip-hop and soul were sometimes mixed with dramatic accouterments, such as the church organ that introduced “Hurricane,” his song with Ye.

And while the exceptional lighting – which stuttered with teal shades during “Kiss Land” and the ensuing “Party Monster” – carried the visual aspects of the concert, The Weeknd threw in some rock trappings with giant puffs of pyro exploding along the catwalk and adding to the meltdown of the skyline during “The Hills.” A supply of plastic wristbands handed out to concertgoers upon arrival blinked faithfully during the gliding “I Feel It Coming,” which also featured a cameo of Jim Carrey’s smooth-groove DJ voice from the “Dawn FM” album.

Looking for 'Love'? Think about going to see The Beatles' Cirque show in Vegas

The most major of The Weeknd’s hits – “Can’t Feel My Face,” “Starboy” and, toward the end of the 100-minute show, “Blinding Lights” – caused mini eruptions in the crowd as they screamed familiar choruses. But throughout the night, his fans, primarily the young men packing the venue, sang his words of love, lust and longing with gusto, The Weeknd their conduit for expression.

With his excellent “Dawn FM” album to still promote, The Weeknd naturally stoked the set list with current single “Out of Time,” a throwback ballad with DeBarge overtones , and the heavenly “Less Than Zero,” its spidery synthesizer inserts the perfect complement to the shimmery keyboards that propel “Save Your Tears,” which preceded it.

Last fall, The Weeknd decided to shift his tour from arenas to stadiums because he had a vision he wanted to present on a major scale. It was worth the wait.

Opening the show in lieu of Doja Cat , who announced in May that tonsil surgery would prevent her from joining the tour, were DJ/producers Mike Dean and Kaytranada (Swedish R&B singer Snoh Aalegra will join Dean on several dates in August).

Dean stood behind a bank of keyboards, presenting chill instrumentals with flecks of electric guitar for his 30-minute set as the crowd filed in. At 7:30 p.m., Kaytranada bounced onto the stage to work his DJ setup – a laptop and mixing board – and slowly elevated the mood as he danced behind his table to remixes of songs by Rihanna and Janet Jackson, while also showcasing his own beats.

Both openers served more as accompaniment rather than artists to engage with – creating even greater anticipation for The Weeknd’s arrival.

Doja Cat will be a special guest on The Weeknd's "After Hours Til Dawn" tour.

The Weeknd Just Announced A Must-See Tour With Doja Cat

I need a “You Right” live duet, please.

This summer, The Weeknd will be embarking on his first tour in nearly four years. He’s doing so to support his two most recent albums, 2020’s After Hours and this year’s Dawn FM . On March 3, the “ Take My Breath ” singer made the exciting announcement by sharing a poster for his After Hours Til Dawn tour on Instagram.

The poster revealed he’ll be performing in stadiums (yes, stadiums!) across North America starting in July. He’ll first kick off his concerts in Canada before heading to the United States, and the best part is Doja Cat will join him as a special guest.

The Weeknd was initially supposed to embark on an arena tour in June of 2020 ; however, due to lockdown restrictions, he was forced to postpone it a year . Then, in February of 2021, he postponed it again to January of 2022. In October, he postponed the tour a third time to this summer. In his Instagram post last fall announcing the postponement, The Weeknd promised fans he would be planning “something bigger” and hinted at stadium shows.

Now, The Weeknd has finally confirmed he’s getting ready to embark on one of his biggest tours yet, and his friend and collaborator Doja Cat will be his special guest. To make sure you don’t miss your chance to see the stars live in concert this summer, here’s everything you need to know about The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn Tour.

When will The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn Tour begin?

The Weeknd will begin his tour in his hometown of Toronto, Canada, on Saturday, July 8. His first show as part of his stadium tour will be at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

When do tickets go on sale for The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn Tour ?

Tickets for The Weeknd’s tour will go on sale on March 10. Fans can purchase tickets through Ticketmaster.

Who will join The Weeknd on his After Hours Til Dawn Tour ?

Doja Cat, who collaborated with The Weeknd on her 2021 song “You Right,” will be a special guest on his tour.

The Weeknd definitely wasn’t lying when he said he was planning a big surprise. Now, can we get him to perform in Antarctica next? That’d be an even bigger shock.

For over two years, The Weeknd has been on a musical journey cementing himself as one of the biggest pop performers in modern music history. In 2020, he released After Hours which helmed the record-breaking single “Blinding Lights” and found hits in “Heartless” and “Save Your Tears.” He kicked off 2022 with the release of Dawn FM , his conceptual fifth studio album about being trapped in a discotheque purgatory. Now, The Weeknd is combining these two worlds for the 2022 After Hours Til Dawn stadium tour.

The first leg of the extensive tour will begin in North America with 18 shows supported by pop powerhouse Doja Cat . The tour kicks off in The Weeknd’s hometown of Toronto on July 8 and makes stops in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Atlanta, Denver, Las Vegas, Seattle, and more before wrapping with a show at Los Angeles’ Sofi Stadium on September 2. Additional international dates are to be announced.

Ticket sales for the North American leg of the After Hours Til Dawn tour will begin on Thursday, March 10 via The Weeknd’s official website . Fans who purchased tickets to the After Hours arena tour, originally scheduled for 2021 then rescheduled to 2022 before being canceled entirely for a shift towards stadiums, will receive first access to tickets for the newly announced dates via an exclusive presale beginning March 4.

The Weeknd After Hours Til Dawn Tour 2022

What Songs Is The Weeknd Playing On The ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ Tour?

Derrick Rossignol

The pandemic made it so The Weeknd couldn’t tour behind 2020’s After Hours immediately following its release, but he didn’t want that to stop him from putting out another album. He ended up doing just that, dropping Dawn FM earlier this year. That didn’t put an After Hours tour to rest, though. Instead, The Weeknd is supporting both albums on his ongoing After Hours Til Dawn tour .

The trek kicked off in mid-July and so far, The Weeknd has six shows under his belt (as of August 4). At those concerts, what songs has he been performing most?

The answer right now is all of them, according to data from Setlist.fm , the most comprehensive resource for concert setlists available online; For each show, he’s had the exact same 29-song setlist, which makes sense given how early into the tour he is.

Setlist.fm also has an “average setlist” for the After Hours Til Dawn tour , which is based on setlists from previous shows, so it’s an indication of how an upcoming The Weeknd show might be structured. This one was probably pretty easy to figure out.

As for album-by-album representation on the setlist, Dawn FM has the most songs included, followed closely by After Hours . Then, it’s Starboy , Beauty Behind The Madness , House Of Balloons , My Dear Melancholy , and Kiss Land . If all the “covers” (songs The Weeknd performs on but isn’t the primary artist of on the album version) were considered an album, they’d go after Starboy in the rankings and before Beauty .

Find The Weeknd’s most played songs on After Hours Til Dawn tour below, as well as the tour’s average setlist. Check out The Weeknd’s upcoming tour dates here .

The Weeknd performing at Coachella

The Weeknd has revealed dates for the global leg of his After Hours Til Dawn stadium tour. Set to kick off in 2023, the expansion covers Europe and Latin America with stops in Stockholm, Amsterdam, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and more before wrapping up in Santiago, Chile. Additional dates are still being announced according to a press release.

Through a personal donation of $500,000, funds raised through ticket sales, proceeds from an exclusive tour t-shirt, tour sponsor Binance’s $2 million contribution and additional partnerships, the award-winning performer was able to donate millions to the cause he represents.

An initial $2 million grant will be going toward providing emergency food and nutrition assistance to the most food-insecure regions of Ethiopia, reaching more than 75,000 people. The Weeknd presented a check to World Food Program USA during a private event at his After Hours Til Dawn concert last weekend (Nov. 27) in Los Angeles.

“We are deeply appreciative and humbled by The Weeknd’s steadfast support, as well as that of his loyal fans and partners,” expressed Barron Segar, World Food Program USA president and CEO. “Abel is an inspiration to us all, and through his efforts, thousands of families will have food security and hope for a better future.”

The Weeknd And SZA May Finally Release Their “Die For You” Remix

The Weeknd will be joined by Kaytranada and Mike Dean on all European dates. The After Hours Till Dawn tour highlights music from The Weeknd’s 2020 album After Hours as well as his acclaimed 2022 release Dawn FM.

The “Starboy” singer will also continue his partnership with the U.N. World Food Programme to contribute funds from the worldwide trek to the XO Humanitarian Fund. €1 from each ticket sold across Europe, £1 in the UK, and the $1 equivalent in countries across Latin America will be donated to this important cause.

Additional ticketing information for The Weeknd’s global tour can be found on the official website. Take a listen to Dawn FM below.

The Weeknd Dazzles Philadelphia With High-Tech ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ Tour Opener: Concert Review

The Weeknd tour

It’s difficult to imagine that an intensely theatrical performer like the Weeknd — whose videos, concerts, 2021 Super Bowl Halftime performance and lyrics are loaded with vibrant, at times disturbing imagery — would launch his first-ever stadium tour without spectacle.

And thankfully, after several  incidents of unwanted drama — including two Covid-related delays, the postponement of the tour’s intended opening date in Toronto last weekend due to a Canada-wide wireless outage, and original opening act Doja Cat dropping out due to tonsil surgery — for the belated first night of his “After Hours Til Dawn” tour in Philadelphia, the theatrics were all onstage.

The concert took place on a humid July night in Philadelphia, which had a temperature of 87 degrees as the show opened with sets from producer-artist Mike Dean and Canadian electronic act Kaytranada, but it had cooled down by the time the Weeknd’s headlining set began at around 9 p.m. The Weeknd’s best music traffics in mood, nuance and a mixture of ecstasy and darkness, and that carried over onto a sprawling, technically complex stage, which broadly resembles a towering, crumbling cityscape and spanned much of the Lincoln Financial Field’s grounds. For the two-hour set, the singer, decked as usual in black, was accompanied by a gang of sheathed dancers  — and a crowd of nearly 70,000 people, many of whom were devotees in red jackets and bandaged noses, in emulation of his “After Hours” look .

Related Stories

What netflix learned from ‘fallout’ success apparent in new synced-up games & unscripted strategy, smart (display) sale: the best-selling echo show 8 is under $95 for the first time ever, popular on variety.

Rising onto the set’s centerpiece with his shrouded dancers below, the Weeknd emerged wearing a clear face mask and a car-length coat, easing into an oscillating, electro take on the “After Hours” opener “Alone Again” with a clear, warm voice that conveyed both despondence and a world-weary ennui.

Dropping down to stage level, he followed his dancers into a new-wave-inflected take on “Gasoline,” picking up the pace and dancing, holding out his arms to the audience even as the lyrics held them at bay.

The set that followed was heavy on his two most recent albums, this year’s “Dawn FM” and 2020’s “After Hours,” with his earlier hits dropped in strategically to keep the crowd hyped — although the arrangements of many of the songs were revamped. His angelic voice soared through the Swedish House Mafia remix version of “Sacrifice,” a disco-fied “How Do I Make You Love Me?” and a jittery version of “Can’t Feel My Face” that featured a break reminiscent of vintage New Order. Those three tracks, performed as a medley, turned the venue into an apocalyptic dance party, with the Weeknd as its jovial, devilish host.

Although musicians were not visible on the sprawling stage, they certainly made their presence heard: Mangled guitars and wheezing church organs dominated his recent hit “Take My Breath” and “Hurricane,” followed by the sultry “Often.”

He brought the energy level down with spacey takes on “Starboy” and “Heartless,” with cobalt-blue lighting adding to the cool atmosphere; the ambient R&B songs acted as a cooling agent to the heated emotions and red hues of the night’s first half.

That mood continued through the evening’s more ruminative second half as the Weeknd moved gently but no less theatrically through the ‘90s-Motown vibes of “Out of Time,” a celestial “Less Than Zero” and a cinematic “Save Your Tears.” Through these songs, which were filled with bluesy guitar licks and soulful synths, he brought down his voice an octave, adding to the lovelorn emotions of the lyrics.

Of course, the two-hour show wound to a close with the biggest of his many hits, the ‘80s inflected global smash “Blinding Lights,” a song that in many ways summed up the contrasts of the show, the music and the performer: an avant-garde superstar, an aloof lover man, a combination of beauty and madness, all contained in a concert that somehow felt intimate in a football stadium with nearly 70,000 fellow devotees.

The Weeknd Kicks Off “After Hours Til Dawn” Tour in Philly, Flies Out Young Canadian Fan: Video + Setlist

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The post The Weeknd Kicks Off “After Hours Til Dawn” Tour in Philly, Flies Out Young Canadian Fan: Video + Setlist appeared first on Consequence .

The Weeknd ’s “After Hours Til Dawn” tour finally launched on Thursday (July 14th) at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field. The tour is scheduled to take place through early September, and you can get tickets to the rest of the upcoming dates via Ticketmaster .

The show marked the start of a long-planned tour long-plagued by setbacks. Originally, the trek was supposed to take place in summer 2021 before being rescheduled to early ’22 because of the pandemic. Then those plans got pushed due to “to constraints of arenas and the desire to do something bigger and special for fans that will require stadiums.” Even once the stadiums were booked, supporting act Doja Cat was forced to pull out following throat surgery . When it finally came time to kick things off in Toronto last week, the show was postponed at the very last minute due to an outage at Canada’s main telecommunications company — Rogers Telecommunications, which just so happened to have its name on the stadium The Weeknd was set to play.

Finally , after all that, The Weeknd was able to officially bring the much anticipated tour to the stage. It surely looked like a show worth the wait — and that goes double for young Canadian fan Phoenix Prince. The six-year-old was seen in a viral image from the canceled Toronto show, dressed in the “Blinding Lights” outfit, devastated that the concert had been called off. When The Weeknd saw the photo, he asked for help tracking down the young Prince. He was ultimately successful, flying Prince and his father down to Philly with all-access passes, a meet-and-greet, and even signing his little red jacket, as seen in images posted to Blake Prince’s Instagram .

The Princes also got a hell of a show, as the “After Hours Til Dawn” stage looks massive, with a full cityscape (occasionally lit by pyro) set up behind The Weeknd. Stretching out from the main stage is a runway reaching almost the full length of the stadium floor, with circular stages in the middle and at the end, “blinding lights” running along either side. Hanging over the final platform is a giant moon that is illuminated in different colors as the mood called for.

While eating up that vast space, The Weeknd delivered a hit-filled 29-song set. The setlist was heavy on tracks from Dawn FM — including the live debuts of “Is There Someone Else?”, “Less Than Zero,” and “Take My Breath” — and After Hours (opener “Alone Again,” the smash “Blinding Lights,” and another live debut in “After Hours”). While mixing in his features on tracks like Kanye West’s “Hurricane,” Drake’s “Crew Love,” and Future’s “Low Life,” Canadian superstar also dropped the first performances of “Kiss Land” since 2013 and “Die for You” since 2017.

Check out the complete setlist below, as well as videos of The Weeknd’s Philadelphia tour kick off.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

Energy cooperation in focus during pm imran's meeting with russian president putin.

after hours dawn fm tour

Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is on a two-day visit to Moscow, held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday during which the premier reaffirmed the importance of the Pakistan Stream gas pipeline as a flagship economic project between the two countries, his office said.

The Kremlin issued a brief statement, saying that the two leaders discussed the main aspects of bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on current regional topics, including developments in South Asia.

In a handout, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said that the two leaders held wide-ranging consultations on bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.

"Recalling the telephone conversations during the recent months between the two leaders, the prime minister expressed confidence that the positive trajectory of bilateral relations will continue to move forward in the future," the handout issued late on Thursday said.

PM Imran expressed the hope that the trust and cordiality marking the relationship would translate into further deepening and broadening of mutual cooperation in diverse fields.

He also reaffirmed the importance of the Pakistan Stream gas pipeline as a flagship economic project between the two countries and also discussed cooperation on prospective energy related projects.

"The prime minister underscored Pakistan’s commitment to [forging] a long-term, multi-dimensional relationship with Russia," the PMO said.

During the meeting, PM Imran also underlined the need for addressing the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and preventing a potential economic meltdown in the war-torn country.

"The prime minister reiterated that Pakistan would continue to work with the international community for a stable, peaceful and connected Afghanistan. In this regard, he underscored the ongoing cooperation and coordination between Pakistan and Russia at various international and regional fora, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation."

In regard to South Asia, the prime minister highlighted the human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and underscored the need for a peaceful resolution of the issue.

"The prime minister also highlighted the developments detrimental to regional peace and stability and stressed the need for measures that would help keep the regional balance," the statement said.

According to the PMO, PM Imran "regretted" the latest situation between Russia and Ukraine and said that Pakistan had hoped "diplomacy could avert a military conflict".

"The prime minister stressed that conflict was not in anyone’s interest and that developing countries were always hit the hardest economically in case of conflict. He underlined Pakistan’s belief that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy."

The premier also expressed concern about rising extremism and Islamophobia in the country and stressed the need for interfaith harmony and coexistence.

"Appreciating President Putin’s understanding of the respect and sensitivities that the Muslims attach to the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), the prime minister said that interfaith harmony and respect for all religions was imperative for peace and harmony within and among societies," the PMO said.

After the meeting with Putin concluded, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak and Energy Minister Nikolay Shulginov called on the premier along with a delegation.

Earlier today, PM Imran laid a floral wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow in a tribute to the casualties of World War II.

'PM to return to Pakistan as per schedule'

Before the meeting between PM Imran and Putin, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry — who is part of the Pakistani delegation in Moscow — confirmed that the premier was on his way to meet President Putin, debunking "speculation" regarding the premier's visit being cut short amid Ukraine-Russia tensions.

after hours dawn fm tour

The information minister also said the premier's "visit is proceeding and that he would return to Pakistan tonight as per schedule".

Chaudhry's clarification came after a report by Associated Press claimed that the prime minister was ending his Moscow trip.

According to Dawn News correspondent Adil Shahzeb, who is currently in Moscow, the PM's "important meeting" with Putin was extended to three hours, which was earlier scheduled for an hour.

PM Imran arrived in Moscow yesterday on a two-day official visit, where he was greeted by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov upon his arrival. He was also presented a guard of honour.

Qureshi meets Lavrov

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow as both the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, according to a statement from the Foreign Office.

Qureshi said Pakistan attaches special importance to bilateral relations with Russia. He said relations between Pakistan and Russia have gradually strengthened.

"Pakistan pursues economic priorities and promotes regional ties in the light of PM Imran Khan's vision," Qureshi told his Russian counterpart.

Lavrov congratulated Qureshi and Pakistani leadership on the success of the OIC's Council of Foreign Ministers on Afghanistan held in Islamabad in December last year and also expressed best wishes regarding the upcoming meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Islamabad next month.

The last Pakistani premier to visit Russia was Nawaz Sharif in March 1999, while former president Asif Ali Zardari came to Moscow in 2011.

PM Imran's visit is viewed by many in and outside Pakistan with much anticipation though the Pakistan government terms it a prelude to greater relationship in strategic, energy and regional connectivity.

The timing of the visit has been discussed threadbare but top Pakistani government officials term it one of the rarest opportunities for the energy-starved country to make headway in energy, regional connectivity and role in Afghanistan post US withdrawal.

National Security Adviser Moeed Yusuf, however, had rejected the notion about the timing of the visit. “Yes there is a global tension but our visit is of bilateral nature and the similar path was taken in the visit to China where economy, economic indicators and connectivity was at the heart of that tour,” he had said.

Russian FM Sergei Lavrov begins Africa tour

after hours dawn fm tour

By Africanews

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Guinea on Monday on the first leg of a three-country African tour aimed at boosting support for Moscow.

Russia's foreign ministry announced the visit on the Telegram social media app.

Lavrov is expected to continue his tour in Chad and Burkina Faso, according to reports by Russian state media.

Russian isolation

The trip comes as Moscow looks to bolster support from countries on the continent, amidst Russian isolation on the world stage.

After its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia saw its relations with the West plummet.

While the African Union and several African capitals opposed Russia's stance, more than half of African countries, including Guinea, abstained from UN resolutions calling for a withdrawal of Russian troops.

Boosting African ties

In July last year, Russian president Vladimir Putin hosted several African heads of government at the second Russia-Africa summit in St Petersburg.

During the summit, Russia made promises focused on delivering grain to a number of African countries, while also declaration an intention to strengthen economic and security cooperation between Moscow and the continent.

Russia's main economic interests in Africa have centred on its grains, arms, extractives, and nuclear power exports.

More than 70 per cent of all Russian trade with Africa in 2021 was carried out in just four countries—Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, and South Africa.

Himars strike destroys air defences inside Russia as Kremlin warns of ‘fatal consequences’

Aftermath of a Ukrainian Himars strike on a Russian air defence system in Belgorod

Ukrainian troops have used US-supplied Himars missiles to destroy an advanced air defence system inside Russia , as the Kremlin warned Washington it could suffer “fatal consequences” for backing the cross-border attacks.

Several missiles are understood to have hit an air defence installation in the Russian city of Belgorod that was equipped with S-300/400 surface-to-air missiles.

Photos of the aftermath of the attack, which is believed to have happened on Sunday, show vehicles on fire and billowing out smoke.

On Monday, Sergei Ryabkov, Moscow’s deputy foreign minister, said that the US would face “fatal consequences” if it allowed Ukraine to use American weapons for attacks inside Russia .

The US has so far allowed Kyiv to hit targets within Russia only if they pose an immediate threat to Ukrainian forces.

It’s not clear if the strike on Belgorod breaches the limits the US has imposed on the weapons, but Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, has requested permission to use US munitions for long-range strikes.

On Monday, those wishes were echoed by Dmytro Kuleba, the foreign minister, who told his Estonian counterpart that Ukraine was pressing its allies “on expanding the scope of its application”.

“It is not 100 per cent, you know, clearance. It comes with some rules that need to be followed,” he said at a press conference.

‘Don’t underestimate the rebuff’

Ukraine has argued that in not allowing it to fire long-range weapons into Russia, its allies are hamstringing its defence.

Mr Zelensky said: “So they have these weapons there and they do not remove them because they know that Ukraine cannot target them with Western weaponry even if they fire against us.”

Ukraine’s supporters fear striking inside Russia will drag them closer to direct conflict with Moscow .

Mr Ryabkov warned the US to take a more serious approach to conflict, risking miscalculation if they don’t.

“I urge these figures [in the US] ... to spend some of their time, which they apparently spend on some kind of video games, judging by the lightness of their approach, on studying what was said in detail by Putin,” Mr Ryabkov said.

“I would like to warn American leaders against miscalculations that could have fatal consequences. For unknown reasons, they underestimate the seriousness of the rebuff they may receive,” he added.

Vladimir Putin said the West would be directly involved in any use of its weapons by Ukraine to strike deep inside Russia , because such attacks would require its satellite, intelligence and military help.

Attacks over the border have stepped up dramatically in recent weeks after Russian forces launched a renewed ground offensive into Ukraine’s north-east.

Ukraine has responded with attacks of its own. Among the most recent was one with drones that destroyed a convoy of 15 Russian trucks, according to footage recorded by the brigades involved in the attack.

On Monday, Mr Kuleba said Russia was trying to dissuade countries from participating in a Ukraine peace summit to be held in Switzerland later this month.

He said Russia was aiming to discredit the summit publicly, convince countries not to participate and urge those intent on going to send low-level representatives.

Russia bars more British ‘establishment figures’ in latest sanctions

Though the names of those sanctioned have not been published, Russia’s foreign ministry said it included journalists, politicians and experts.

Moscow said the decision was made due to the individuals’ “hostile” actions, and urged Britain to stop its support for Ukraine.

Ukraine kills 1 after shelling civilian areas in Belgorod, Russia says

The Ukrainian military shelled several towns and villages across the Belgorod region, killing one and injuring 13 others, according to the district’s governor.

“A munition detonated in the Korocha district, as a result of which one person was killed and three were injured,” Vyacheslav Gladkov, the Belgorod governor, said in a post on his Telegram channel.

Mr Gladgov added that residential buildings and infrastructure sites were damaged during the strike.

Russian strike in Donetsk kills 2, including 12-year-old boy

A double Russian strike killed two people, including a 12-year-old boy, in the village of Mykhailivka in Donetsk, the region’s governor reported.

“Tomorrow, Ukraine will commemorate the Day of Remembrance of Children who died due to the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, and today another name was added to this sad list,” Vadym Filashkin, the regional governor, said.

According to Ukrainian media, the Russian military hit the town early on Monday with a guided aerial bomb before repeating the strike an hour and a half later. At least five buildings were reported to have been damaged.

Russian FM in Guinea to boost Moscow’s influence in Africa

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, has arrived in Guinea as Moscow continues to try to boost its influence in Africa.

TASS, the Russian state-run news agency, reported that Guinea would be the first stop as part of a larger African tour, but did not specify which other countries Lavrov intends to visit.

In July, Vladimir Putin invited African leaders to a summit in St Petersburg where he said they agreed to promote a multipolar world.

Russia has expanded its reach in central African countries in recent years, particularly in the Sahel region, and is understood to be now looking to coastal nations such as Guinea.

Zelensky says Trump risks being ‘loser president’

Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Donald Trump risks being a “loser president” if he wins the next US election and gives Ukraine a bad peace deal.

The Ukrainian president said that he had not yet developed a strategy for what to do if Mr Trump retakes the White House. However, in an interview with the Guardian, he revealed that Boris Johnson had offered to approach Trump on his behalf.

Should Trump win, he is expected to cut off or reduce military support to Kyiv.

‘1.5 million men’ register with Ukrainian conscription office

1.5 million military-age Ukrainian men have registered their personal data for potential conscription, Ukraine’s defence ministry said.

The announcement came after a new mobilisation law was enacted in May that gave draft-eligible men 60 days to update their personal data so that the military could find them.

The ministry also said that 14,000 Ukrainian men living abroad had registered for service.

Ukraine suspended consular services for military-aged Ukrainian men living abroad in April. However, draft-eligible men are now able to apply for the services if they provide a document confirming that they are registered with the military.

Zelensky will attend G7 summit

Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, will attend the upcoming G7 summit in Italy, his spokesman said.

On the agenda for the summit is the issue of using frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.

Sergiy Nikiforov, the president’s spokesman, could not confirm whether Mr Zelensky would attend in person or online but said that “there is no doubt that he will be there”.

China denies pressuring countries not to attend Swiss peace summit

China has denied Volodymyr Zelensky’s accusation that it was acting as an “instrument” of Russia by pressuring other countries not to attend a Swiss-organised peace summit on the war in Ukraine.

“China’s position is open and transparent, and there is absolutely no instance of us putting pressure on other countries,” Beijing’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

On Sunday, the Ukrainian president said “Russia, using Chinese influence in the region, using Chinese diplomats also, does everything to disrupt the peace summit”.

The conference is scheduled to be held in Switzerland in mid-June. Swiss authorities had hoped China would attend, but China said it would not do so without Russia being present.

Civilian killed in Russian missile strike in Kharkiv

An overnight Russian missile strike in the Kharkiv district of Ukraine killed one and injured two, the region’s governor said.

According to the official, the strike hit the town of Zmiiv, which is located around 26 miles south of the city of Kharkiv.

Kharkiv and the surrounding area has come under increased bombardment in recent weeks after Russia launched a new offensive in the area in early May.
