Seven weeks after firing Darvin Ham, the Los Angeles Lakers landed on their next head coach on Thursday: JJ Redick , the 15-year NBA veteran turned podcaster and broadcaster, league sources with direct knowledge of the situation tell The Athletic . Redick is signing a four-year deal worth in the neighborhood of $8 million per season with the Lakers, according to sources briefed on the deal.

Behind the scenes, the Lakers had been zeroing in on the 39-year-old Redick for the past four weeks, infatuated with his potential to be a coach for the present and future, beyond just the next couple seasons of LeBron James’ legendary career.

Redick had first interviewed with vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka for the Lakers’ head coaching job for about two hours during the week of May 13 at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago. Redick then entered the Lakers facility on June 15 to meet again with Pelinka, as well as owners Jeanie, Joey and Jesse Buss, the remaining key stakeholders in the organization.

Multiple sources with direct knowledge of the meeting described Redick as “impressive” during his visit to Los Angeles, diving deep into his offensive and defensive philosophies and displaying his passion for the sport that foreshadowed a willingness to submit himself to the countless working hours for the modern head coach.

He explained his decision-making process when it comes to strategy, how the analysis and empirical evidence would always guide his choices rather than preconceived notions or outdated beliefs. Redick described a system molded around this roster, focusing on elevating Anthony Davis’ involvement, particularly late in games, and alleviating the constant ballhandling duties on James by utilizing him more off the ball. Keeping James, who turns 40 in December, fresh down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs will be critical.

For these Lakers, Redick’s ability to access his stars in James and Davis could be seamless due to the stature he may bring as a respected former player, but how he unlocks the remainder of the roster and coaches top-down remains crucial to the job. Austin Reaves will surely be part of strong three-man attacks for the Lakers under Redick, who’ll be thrust into developing players such as Rui Hachimura , Max Christie and whomever the franchise drafts.

During his meetings with Pelinka and his visit with Lakers ownership, Redick showed promise, team sources said. But as with any first-time head coach, the true tests will come during the adversity of training camp and the season, the management of player relationships and the control of the locker room.

Redick has had a meteoric media rise since retiring from his playing career in 2021, running his podcast network, starting the “Mind the Game” show with James and serving as a color commentator during the NBA Finals all while simultaneously chasing a head coaching job. Redick interviewed for the Toronto Raptors’ top coaching job in 2023 and the Charlotte Hornets this year. He has never coached professionally — his only coaching experience to this point was with his son’s youth basketball team.

League sources briefed on Redick’s mindset say he badly wants to make the jump to NBA head coach and embrace the challenges the chair brings as he believes it is the natural transition of his basketball life.

As Redick watched these NBA playoffs, both as a commentator and viewer, he envisioned how he would utilize a potential James/Davis-led roster. Just a few years after ending his playing career, Redick has his next basketball challenge.

The Lakers underwent some turbulence in their coaching search.

Much of the process consisted of Pelinka meeting with candidates by himself off-site or virtually, not within Lakers headquarters. After his conversation with Redick, Pelinka met with Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego in Los Angeles on May 20. Several candidates — Boston’s Sam Cassell, Minnesota’s Micah Nori, Denver ’s David Adelman and Miami ’s Chris Quinn — conducted virtual meetings.

On May 29, Borrego became the first candidate to enter the Lakers’ facility to meet again with Pelinka and ownership.

In the days before and after Borrego’s second in-person visit, some Lakers stakeholders believed the focus of the head coaching search centered on Redick. Given the lack of a championship experience-driven hire after Mike Budenholzer went to the Suns and the Clippers kept Ty Lue long-term on a five-year contract extension, league sources briefed on the matter say Redick’s chances grew for the Lakers, a high-ceiling candidate tasked to balance winning and development and allowed to coach through early mistakes.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, came Dan Hurley. On June 6, ESPN reported that the coach of the back-to-back national champion UConn Huskies was the “target” of the Lakers’ search. Beyond Jeanie Buss and Pelinka, the pursuit was kept tight-lipped within the organization.

Only Pelinka and Jeanie Buss met with Hurley when he and his wife, Andrea, came to the Lakers facility on June 7.

Hurley left Los Angeles after being offered a six-year, $70 million contract, according to league sources briefed on the matter. He returned home to Connecticut to mull his decision while the basketball world waited.

On June 10, he announced he was staying with the Huskies. Hurley’s new contract with UConn is expected to make him the highest-paid coach in college basketball — six years and upwards of $50 million, league sources said.

Even though the Lakers moved quickly to offer Hurley a contract that would have made him one of the highest-paid coaches in the league, several people inside the Lakers organization and externally wondered about the true overall genuineness of the pursuit and whether the franchise had been used by Hurley to get more money to stay at Connecticut. The Hurley situation was seen by one team source with direct involvement in the search as a Hail Mary attempt.

This much is clear, though: When it came to the Lakers’ ultimate decision-maker, Jeanie Buss, team sources said she was highly motivated to make Hurley their next coach and was genuinely disappointed when the attempt fell short.

Hurley himself told Dan Le Batard, as he made the media rounds, that the Lakers’ interest started on June 5. He denied needing the leverage to get a raise at UConn on “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz” when asked about it, then later said the school’s name, image and likeness collective and his staffing payments still needed to be increased going into the Lakers’ process.

Just like that, Hurley was out of the picture almost as quickly as he’d entered it.

The Lakers’ brass regrouped on June 11, the day after Hurley’s announcement, and finally went all in on their top choice in Redick, according to team and league sources. After meeting with the Lakers on June 15, Redick spoke on the phone with Davis on Monday, a critical relationship in the years to come, the sources briefed on the situation said.

The decision to choose Redick came as the Lakers, led by Pelinka, prioritized Davis’ voice in the process and ensured that he understood the shared vision. Other key players were supportive of the hiring, those sources said.

Los Angeles is confident that Redick will be the long-term coaching solution that has eluded the franchise for over a decade.

Since Phil Jackson’s departure in the summer of 2011, the Lakers have now had seven different head coaches (eight if counting Bernie Bickerstaff’s five-game interim tenure in 2013). Winning hasn’t always equated to job security in Los Angeles: Frank Vogel won a championship in 2020 and was fired two years later. Ham made the Western Conference finals in 2023 and was gone one season later.

But the 39-year-old Redick checks many of the boxes on the Lakers’ extensive checklist for their next coach . He’s drawn internal comparisons to a young Pat Riley as a coaching prospect who jumped from playing to the broadcast booth to the coaching chair (though Riley spent two years as a Lakers assistant before taking the top job). Los Angeles is confident he can be its version of Erik Spoelstra or Steve Kerr — a culture-setter who can grow with the franchise for over a decade. There have been far more former-player, first-time head coaches who failed to meet expectations than those who succeeded, though, with the most recent examples including Steve Nash (Brooklyn), Derek Fisher ( Knicks ), Jason Kidd (Brooklyn) and Ham.

Multiple sources briefed on the matter said one person who became a respected unofficial resource for the Lakers during the process is legendary former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, whose deep knowledge of candidates, such as Redick and others, provides a lens into the culture the organization wants and the characteristics of a potential staff around the next head coach. Krzyzewski’s history with the Lakers goes back to 2004 when Dr. Jerry Buss made a strong yet unsuccessful offer to hire Coach K. Redick played for Krzyzewski at Duke from 2002 to 2006.

Assistant coaching candidates for Redick’s staff will include former head coach and recent Trail Blazers assistant Scott Brooks, former Lakers guard Rajon Rondo, ex-Laker and current Dallas Mavericks assistant Jared Dudley and Cassell, according to league sources.

The timing of Redick’s hire is notable, as he will join Los Angeles’ roster-planning ahead of the NBA Draft on June 26-27 — the first day the Lakers can trade their three tradeable picks (2024, ’29 and ’31). It also puts a leader in place ahead of James’ looming free agency. The 39-year-old superstar must decide whether to exercise his $51.4 million player option for the 2024-25 season by June 29. The Lakers are open to any contract structure that will keep James in Los Angeles, league sources told The Athletic .

James’ decision, and how the Lakers reshape their roster around him and Davis, will determine Los Angeles’ direction next season. But Redick’s arrival is a significant bet on an unproven coach — one the team is confident can bridge the gap into the next era of Lakers basketball.

‘Are you the Queen?’ Camilla asked during visit to primary school

The Queen was asked: “Are you the Queen?” by an excited seven-year-old pupil during a visit to a primary school on Wednesday.

“That’s me!” she cheerily responded as she chatted to the Year Two pupils at Christ Church CofE Primary School in Chelsea, west London.

Her Majesty also met a young Charles and a Kamilla during the visit and expressed mock surprise as she came face-to-face with a mosaic of the King at his Coronation .

“Oh my goodness, that’s my husband!” she laughed as she admired the children’s work.

The Queen, who wore a floral black and white Fiona Clare dress, was visiting the school to hear about a literary festival in which pupils are sponsored to read books. She heard about the various activities the school is using to promote reading for pleasure among its young pupils.

She told the children they “must keep on reading forever and ever” and that if they did so, by the time they were grown up they would be “stars”.

The Queen was met on arrival by two Year 4 pupils, Marina, nine, and Lexi, eight, who had been practising their curtsies.

“So you’re showing me around, are you?” she asked them. “Excellent.”

The Queen, 76, was in the playground chatting to pupils about the book The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch when Yemariam, seven, called out: “Are you the Queen?”

Her Majesty appeared amused as she confirmed that yes, she was indeed.

In the reception classroom, she asked various groups of young children what they were drawing.

“Can I sit on your table?” She asked one group as she perched alongside them. “It might break! If you see me go down, there might be a crash. Will you pick me up again?”

As she waved goodbye to the children, one boy called out: “I’m Charles!”

“Are you? That’s what my husband is called,” she said. “Just the same name.”

There was another reminder of her husband as she stepped outside, where Year 3 pupils were waiting to show her a mosaic they had made depicting the King on the day of his Coronation, wearing a crown and his velvet robes and holding a staff.

The mosaic was titled “King Charles III” with May 6 2023 below.

“It looks pretty good to me,” the Queen said, as two Year 4 pupils, Leo and Hannah, both nine, told her all about it.

“Did you do bits of this?” she asked. “It’s very clever. I think that’s brilliant.”

The two children pointed out which tiles they had stuck on. The mosaic was designed from sketches drawn by the children, which were combined by the school’s visiting mosaic artist.

In the Year 4 classroom, the children were making felt butterflies, which the Queen dutifully admired.

One girl told her that she was called Kamilla. “You are called Kamilla?” the Queen responded. “Hello Kamilla, from another Camilla.

“Have you got a Kamilla butterfly here? How do you do it? Lots of different steps.”

The teacher said she had never heard the children so quiet. “The minute I go out of the door, the noise will escalate,” the Queen laughed.

Outside, she met various groups of children in the playground, some of whom were learning about The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch.

The Queen asked whether they had learnt any new words, one of which was “industrious”.

“Are you made to spell it as well?” she asked. “That is going to be really hard.”

Another word was “devour”, which the Queen said: “That explains a lot of eating, doesn’t it.”

Sponsored to read

The school’s literary festival, which began on June 10 and runs until July 5, encourages children to be sponsored by family and friends to read as many books as possible.

Marina, one of the girls who was showing the Queen around, told her that her father was sponsoring her £4 a book.

“Is he? That’s pretty good,” she replied. “So how many books have you read?”

Told it was ten, she exclaimed: “That’s a lot of money!”

The Queen watched some children recite passages from their favourite books before being offered a slice of cake, which was decorated with the names of books.

“I was wondering who had made that delicious cake,” she said. “I’ll take some and eat it later.”

The Queen then watched the school choir perform two songs, The Secret Owl Society and Hallelujah, in the hall before presenting the school with a selection of books, including The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Hairy Maclary, Swallows and Amazons and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

‘Brilliant idea’

Delivering a brief, off-the-cuff address to the school, she said: “I’d just like to say to you all that I think it’s a brilliant idea to have a literary festival. I’m so impressed by your reading and just remember you must keep on reading forever and ever.

“It’s going to take you off on millions of adventures all over the world and the more you read as you grow up, it will be bigger and better for all of you. So keep on reading and by the time you are grown up, you are all going to be stars. So well done and thank you very much for having me.”

The Queen was presented with a posy of flowers from the school garden and posed for photographs with the whole school before leaving.

Next up is a question from Steve.

We're an island - why can't we easily close our borders?

Sir Keir Starmer answers first, explaining that the biggest threat to the UK's borders at the moment are small boat arrivals in the Channel.

"There are record numbers - since Rishi Sunak became prime minister 50,000 people have come across by small boats, and the government has effectively lost control of our borders."

Sir Keir adds this is now a "national security issues".

He says that "nobody" should be making this journey across the Channel, reiterating his plan to "smash the criminal gangs".

Over to the prime minister, who says it is "completely unfair what is happening" with small boats in the Channel.

He adds that progress has been made, claiming that there needs to be a "deterrent" - the Rwanda scheme.

"Do not surrender our borders to the Labour Party," Mr Sunak says, to applause.

Sir Keir hits back, pointing to the "huge expense to the tax payer" of the Rwanda flights, which he claims would only deport a few hundred people.

"I notice you called the election by the way before any flights could get off," the Labour leader quips. "Interesting timing."

But what would Sir Keir do?

"We've got to process the claims," he says.

"At the moment 100% of them are effectively being granted asylum in this country, because they can't go anywhere."

Mr Sunak comes back, questioning how Sir Keir would make return deals for asylum seekers.

"Are you going to try and do a deal with the Taliban?" he asks. "It's completely nonsensical. You are taking people for fools."

Within minutes, this debate descended into a shouting match, with Rishi Sunak doing most of it - even drowning out the referee, Mishal Husain.

The PM wants to talk about tax, while Sir Keir wants to talk about politicians gambling. There'll be yellow cards at this rate.

Mr Sunak brings up a Telegraph report claiming Labour's shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, Darren Jones, said in a leaked recording that the party's net zero plans would cost billions.

Oh dear, it's all very shouty.

So far, it's a bit like watching England in the Euros. Disjointed, negative and short on flair. Are we heading for a 0-0 draw?

Then Sir Keir has a Jude Bellingham moment amid the midfield stalemate.

"If you listened to people in the audience more, you might not be so out of touch," he says - and is rewarded with a round of applause.

The next question comes from audience member Beverley, who asks how the next prime minister will ensure people with disabilities are not punished by benefit sanctions.

Rishi Sunak is first to answer - he says he believes in a "compassionate" welfare system that "supports everyone who needs it".

He points to his record during COVID, saying he got support "to the most vulnerable".

Mr Sunak said the Conservatives would make sure people who can work are supported into employment, including reform of the sick note process. He adds that people shouldn't be allowed to turn down jobs that they are able to do.

PM 'out of touch', says Starmer

Asked if he thinks Mr Sunak is wrong on this point, Sir Keir Starmer says he isn't.

The prime minister immediately chimes in that the Labour leader opposed the sanctions programme when he announced it.

"If you listened to people in the audience across the country more often you might not be so out of touch," Sir Keir replies, to applause from the audience.

Sir Keir says Labour want to bring down the number of people who are economically inactive.

He notes that hospital waiting lists are a symptom of the rising number of people out of work - garnering another round of applause.

Sunak: Starmer not being upfront with voters

Mr Sunak accuses Sir Keir of not being "upfront" with people about Labour's stance on the Tories' approach to welfare.

"You don't think my approach is the right one, you're going to have higher welfare under you, and that's why you can't deliver tax cuts the way that I can," he says, getting his own applause this time.

We've moved on to another question from an audience member, Mary.

She says she's worked two jobs her whole life, and asks the candidates what they'll do to get more people off benefits and back to work.

Sir Keir Starmer references his father's job in a factory as a toolmaker and underlines the importance of hard work.

"If you can work, you should work," he says, adding Labour has several plans to help tackle the number of people on benefits in its manifesto.

Rishi Sunak says he "strongly agrees" that people are better off in work.

He says the number of people on benefits is too high and references what he describes as a "comprehensive plan" that he outlined months ago, making the criteria required for welfare stricter.

The first question in today's leaders' debate comes from a member of the audience, Sue, who points to a lack of integrity and honesty in politics.

She asks how Sir Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak would restore trust in government, in light of a scandal over betting on the date and result of the election.

Mr Sunak says again that he was "furious" to hear the allegations of informed betting on the date of the election, with two Conservative members suspended.

As he speaks, protesters can be heard outside the hall (see previous post).

Sir Keir then picks up, saying he would like to "reset politics, so that politics returns to public service".

He also says there is a "question of leadership", pointing to "partygate" and the COVID contracts.

Sir Keir notes that when a member of his party was implicated in the betting scandal, they were suspended quickly.

Meanwhile, the Labour leader says Mr Sunak was "bullied into taking action".

Hitting back, the prime minister says it was important that these matters were "dealt with properly".

Starmer: I expect the highest standards

Sir Keir is then asked about a Labour candidate, who bet on himself to lose his seat on 4 July.

He says that the member was suspended as soon as an investigation was confirmed.

"My candidates know I expect the highest standards," the Labour leader says.

But does Sir Keir know other candidates haven't made similar bets?

He says he has made clear the consequences of doing so.

By Tim Baker , political reporter, in Nottingham

As the debate gets under way, a pro-Palestine demonstration can be heard echoing through Nottingham Trent University.

A group was seen gathering outside the venue several hours ago - but it was only a couple of people at that point.

These events have happened at many of the leaders events during the election.

But despite that, the Middle East has not come up much during the debates.

It's extremely audible here, though, as the leaders speak.

The crowd can be heard cheering after one of the speakers at the protest says they can be heard on the broadcast.

A night of consequence awaits

As Mishal Husain delivered her intro to tonight's events, a hush fell in the spin room.

You can tell tonight is going to be one of consequence.

The debate is being played to the waiting pack of journalists through TVs scattered around the room.

But as the horns of the introduction music plays, the hubbub returns as copy gets written and people discuss how they think the night will go.

The final round of head-to-head debates between Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer is now under way, held by the BBC in Nottingham.

The clash is due to last 75 minutes, held in front of a live audience, that has been chosen by pollster Savanta, rather than the BBC.

It will include Conservative and Labour supporters, in addition to undecided voters.

We'll bring you live updates throughout - stay tuned.

It's now or never for Rishi Sunak.

The final leaders' TV showdown in this general election campaign is the underdog PM's last chance to fight back against runaway frontrunner Sir Keir Starmer.

This is number seven in the series of clashes, five of which have involved Mr Sunak and the Labour leader.

The other two, with seven combatants, involved Penny Mordaunt for the Conservatives and Angela Rayner for Labour.

The first Sunak vs Starmer head-to-head, on ITV, was memorable for the PM hitting Sir Keir with a relentless onslaught on tax, claiming Labour is poised to mount a £2,000 tax grab, and for the Labour leader's sluggish response.

The venue was ITV's studios in Salford. The spin room was in Granada's Coronation Street experience and the showdown was the first episode in a six-week election soap opera that reaches its climax tonight.

Next came a BBC seven-way debate, coming in the week of Mr Sunak's astonishing D-Day blunder when he left the Normandy ceremony early, which Ms Mordaunt slammed as "completely wrong". Not exactly, helpful.

Then came Sky News' The Battle For No.10 in our target town of Grimsby, when Sir Keir struggled to answer questions from Beth Rigby on why he backed Jeremy Corbyn in the 2019 election and said: "I always knew we wouldn't win."

From Grimsby, it was back across the Pennines to Salford for an ITV seven-way debate which saw a jubilant Nigel Farage celebrating an opinion poll which suggested his Reform UK had overtaken the Conservatives for the first time. "We are now the opposition to the Labour Party," he declared.

At York University, a BBC Question Time saw Mr Sunak, Sir Keir, the SNP's John Swinney and the Liberal Democrats' Sir Ed Davey each given a half-hour grilling from a hostile audience.

It was here that Mr Sunak broke his silence on the gambling scandal, on the day it was revealed that Tory candidate Laura Saunders and her husband, party campaign chief Tony Lee were named.

He was "incredibly angry" he said - and anyone guilty would be "booted out" of the party.

Then on Monday, on the 17th floor of the News Building overlooking the Thames, at The Sun's Election Showdown, Mr Sunak came out fighting on "stop the boats", claiming migrants were "queueing up in Calais waiting for a Starmer government".

Why do these highlights from the six previous clashes matter?

Because these issues are bound to come up again in the final showdown, as Mr Sunak attempts to damage his Labour rival on tax, Jeremy Corbyn and illegal migration and Sir Keir hits back on D-Day, gambling and the Tory "chaos" of the past 14 years.

Many people will have already cast their vote by post.

But polls suggest many are still undecided.

So, with barely a week left before 4 July, it's Mr Sunak's last chance. Now or never, in fact.

By  Tim Baker , political reporter, in Nottingham

One of the inherent dangers of the spin room is the hard work of organisation and logistics usually taking place behind the camera is there for all to see.

Crouching down and waving to get someone's attention for a microphone? That will go out on the broadcast.

Necking the dregs of a Diet Coke? Thousands of people can see you do it.

The messages are already coming in...

But the chaos is closely co-ordinated with perspiring advisers dragging politicians from one camera to the next on tight deadlines.

Producers and floor managers are doing the opposite as they convince the ministers and shadow cabinet members to do their show as well.

It's situations like these that demonstrate the hard work that goes into producing television shows like the Politics Hub.

Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer have arrived in Nottingham ahead of this evening's election debate.

They were greeted in Nottingham by BBC director-general Tim Davie, who shook both men's hands as they arrived.

The debate gets under way at 8.15pm.

Come explore the crown jewel of The Met's American Wing in spherical 360° video. Float in mid-air among the sculptures, including cheek-to-cheek with the gilded sculpture of Diana on its tall pedestal. Try tipping your view over the upper balcony's edge to witness the crowd below in time-lapse—all using your mouse, track pad, or smartphone. You can even peek at the easels of two artists at work.

Flanked by stunning Tiffany stained-glass windows, The Charles Engelhard Court in The American Wing houses some of the Museum's most iconic sculptures, mosaics, and architectural elements.

Arms and Armor Galleries

Visit The Met's distinguished collection of arms and armor from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and America. Experience the galleries from above and take a closer look at some of the key objects of sculptural and ornamental beauty—all in 360. This may be the only time you’ll ever get to stand in the middle of a parade of armored soldiers on horseback. No matter where you turn—from the flags overhead to the weapons gleaming below—you'll find unprecedented access to these masterpieces of original design and traditional craftsmanship.
