A Comprehensive Guide to Mashhad’s Hotels

Time to read:  , last updated: .

The second-largest and perhaps most religiously important city in Iran in Mashhad. The stunning, enormous, and constantly expanding Haram (shrine complex), which honors the martyrdom of Shi’ite Islam’s eighth Imam, Imam Reza, in AD 818, is the city’s main attraction and reason for existence. Over 20 million pilgrims visit this site annually to pay their respects, demonstrating how personally felt the pain of Imam Reza’s passing more than a millennium later. Ahead of the Iranian new year (Nowruz) and other significant holidays, almost all lodging and transportation will be sold out. After one of the Shi’ite Imams was buried here, the tiny village of Sanaabad started to draw Shiite pilgrims, and it soon became known as Mashhad (‘place of martyrdom’). But the city only gained prominence in the area of Khorasan after Tamerlane destroyed many neighboring cities in the late 14th century. Before then the nearby town of Tus and Nishapur hold much greater importance.

Tamerlane’s son Shah Rokh and his extraordinary wife Gohar Shad, after whom the main mosque at the Haram is named, enlarged the shrine complex in the early 15th century. Shah Abbas I of the Safavids rebuilt the new core of the Holy Shrine in 1612 after the Safavids made Shiism the official religion of Iran. Mashhad then became the most important pilgrimage destination in Iran and under Nader Shah, whose 18th-century empire was centered in Khorasan, Mashhad reached its political apex.

Bali tourist’s ‘stupid’ stunt goes viral

A tourist has copped major flak online after engaging in an “embarrassing” act at a luxury resort in Bali.

The British traveller was believed to be staying at the 5-star Apurva Kempinski hotel in Nusa Dua, considered the island’s most luxurious location, when he decided to put his face in a large metal bowl filled with water and flower petals.

Bali tourist's idiotic stunt goes viral

In the viral TikTok, which has amassed more than 33 million views, he could be seen approaching the decorative bowl where the woman filming can be heard saying, “OK put your face in it”.

He grabs either side of the bowl and leans into it before it tips towards him with water gushing all over the floor and on his clothes.

Furious viewers were quick to comment, branding the man’s actions as “stupid” and reaffirming why tourists get a bad rep on the island.

“You come to Bali without bringing your brain? Why do you have to destroy everything in someone else’s country?” one person wrote.

“Omg money can’t buy brains,” said another.

A third added: “Well that’s just lovely isn’t it, so careful and respectful and cultured.”

However, among the more than 22,600 comments, many chimed in to defend the man.

“I mean it’s just a bowl of water and flowers. Nothing broke it’ll be OK. Just say you’re sorry,” one person said.

“Am I the only one who feels bad for him,” another wrote.

Others got into a heated discussion about the positioning of the decorative bowl.

“To be fair that should have been secured better idk,” one said.

It ended up falling on him with water gushing all over the floor. Picture: TikTok/milzo09

Other viewers admitted they would be “mortified” if it had happened to them.

“I would just lay on the floor like I passed out,” one joked. “I would leave the country,” another wrote.

It’s not clear what happened afterwards but many were hopeful the tourist helped staff clean up the mess.

Russian tourists appear to be the new Bali bogans

The man’s stunt comes as the Island of Gods continues to combat unruly tourists.

Bali’s peak tourism body, Wonderful Indonesia, recently released new guidelines titled Travel with Respect highlighting local laws and customs for visitors.

Tourists are being urged to respect local customs, traditions and beliefs. Picture: Agung Parameswara/Getty Images

“For Balinese locals who welcome visitors as guests with open hearts and arms, it’s a sacred land where ancient traditions and modern life intertwine,” the guidelines read.

“To truly enjoy the magic of this island paradise while you’re here, it’s essential to understand and respect local customers and way of life.

Tourists slammed for launching scooter into Bali villa pool

“Trust us, a little bit of understanding goes a long way in ensuring that your Bali adventure is filled with incredible memories, meaningful connections, and unforgettable experiences.”

Speaking to reporters this week, Bali’s tourism board chairman, IB Agung Partha Adnyana, said: “The stigma of a free Bali must be changed, yes … the dos and don’ts must also be tightened again.”

The list was released in 2023 with a flyer put into passports on arrival.

“Indeed, it was already there visually (in the form of a billboard, announcements, web pages), but many people didn’t see it afterwards. Now we are trying again as before, manually,” Mr Adnyana said.

He wants to see the flyers reintroduced and the do's and don’t communicate more broadly, according to the Bali Sun .

He wants to try and stop the stigma of Bali being a destination that can be disrespected by foreigners who are under the misguided belief that criminal, culturally disrespectful, reckless, and irresponsible behaviour will be blindly tolerated; it won’t, the publication reported.

At least 550 people have died during a mass gathering, with temperatures rising over 50C and motionless bodies seen on the roadside.

A hiker has captured the shocking moment two tourists jumped a safety fence at a notorious waterfall just to take a selfie, leaving onlookers in disbelief.

It has only been a year since the Titan imploded - killing everybody on board. Now there has been an unbelievable development.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A missing Dutch tourist was found dead early Saturday on the eastern Greek island of Samos, local media reported, the latest in a string of recent cases in which tourists in the Greek islands have died or gone missing. Some, if not all, had set out on hikes in blistering hot temperatures.

Dr. Michael Mosley, a noted British TV anchor and author, was found dead last Sunday on the island of Symi. A coroner concluded that he had died the previous Wednesday, shortly after going for a hike over difficult, rocky terrain.

Samos, like Symi, lies very close to the Turkish coast.

The body of the 74-year-old Dutch tourist was found by a Fire Service drone lying face down in a ravine about 300 meters (330 yards) from the spot where he was last observed on Sunday, walking with some difficulty in the blistering heat.

Authorities were still searching for four people reported missing in the past few days.

On Friday, two French tourists were reported missing on Sikinos, a relatively secluded Cyclades island in the Aegean Sea, with less than 400 permanent residents.

The two women, aged 73 and 64, had left their respective hotels to meet.

A 70-year-old American tourist was reported missing Thursday on the small island of Mathraki in Greece’s northwest extremity by his host, a Greek-American friend. The tourist had last been seen Tuesday at a cafe in the company of two female tourists who have since left the island.

Mathraki, population 100, is a 3.9-square-kilometer (1.2-square-mile) heavily wooded island, west of the better-known island of Corfu. Strong winds had prevented police and the fire service from reaching the island to search for the missing person as of Saturday afternoon, media reported.

On the island of Amorgos, authorities were still searching for a 59-year-old tourist reported missing since Tuesday, when he had gone on a solo hike in very hot conditions.

U.S. media identified the missing tourist as retired Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Albert Calibet of Hermosa Beach, California.

Amorgos, the easternmost of the Cyclades islands, is a rocky 122-square-kilometer (47-square-mile) island of less than 2,000 inhabitants. A couple of years ago the island had a record number of visitors, over 100,000.

Some media commentary has focused on the need to inform tourists of the dangers of setting off on hikes in intense heat.

Temperatures across Greece on Saturday were more than 10 degrees Celsius (18 Fahrenheit) lower than on Thursday, when they peaked at almost 45 C (113 F). They are expected to rise again from Sunday, although not to heat-wave levels.

A Texas man has died after he was electrocuted in a hot tub at a resort complex in northwest Mexico this week.

Jorge Guillen, 43, died and his wife, 35-year-old Lizette Zambrano, was injured after they were both shocked by “electric discharge” in the jacuzzi at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Peñasco around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The couple, who were identified by CBS affiliate KDBC, had traveled to Sonora from El Paso, Texas.

A witness who spoke to Telemundo said bystanders made frantic attempts to pull the couple out of the water but were stymied by the electrical current. One woman was even shocked herself as she tried to enter the hot tub. Videos posted on social media show the chaotic aftermath of the tragedy, with witnesses screaming as they tried to help the couple.

When authorities arrived at the complex, Guillen was found submerged under the water.

Jorge Guillen, 43, died and Lizette Zambrano, 35, was injured after they were electrocuted in a jacuzzi in Sonora, Mexico this week

The complex has reportedly shut down all hot tubs in the complex, one of the witnesses said.

The attorney general’s office for the state has launched an investigation into the matter to determine Guillen’s official cause of death. Officials are also working to determine what caused the electric discharge.

A GoFundMe had been established to help support the couple’s family. The fundraising site is asking for donations to help bring the man’s body home and support the woman’s medical expenses.

Following the incident, Zambrano was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

“Jorge had a heart of gold and was always there for family and friends,” the page reads. “The love they shared was one for ages.” By early Thursday afternoon, the fundraiser had raked in more than $30,000.

It doesn’t hurt that there’s a lot of exciting newness in hospitality throughout both perennial hot spots and quieter cities that are now being thrust into Swifties’ consciousness. Because Europe is so easy to get around — remember those trains! — a pilgrimage to see the megawatt singer is also an invitation to explore further. For example, even if you missed her recently in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital is a worthwhile side trip as a slew of hotels are all ultra-attractive newcomers, including 100 Princes Street ( 100princes-street.com or via priceline.com ), the W Edinburgh ( marriott.com ) and the soon-to-open inland surfing destination Lost Shore Surf Resort .

Here, we round up a dozen of the most beautiful new hotels along Swift’s upcoming European tour dates .

Liverpool, England: June 15

The Halyard Liverpool Hotel : Just opened in March, this IHG Vignette Collection boutique hotel sits in the center of the city’s boho Ropewalks district for easy access to everything, including art, music and bazaars in Victorian warehouses. Charming and lush, the property features plenty of touches that reference the area’s mercantile history, but it’s also perfectly modern with amenities such as Temple Spa night creams and bath oils in the 133 rooms. The Halyard Liverpool, 123 Duke St., rooms from $273/night .

Cardiff, Wales: June 18

London, England: June 21, 22 and 23

Broadwick Soho : One of London’s buzziest — and most flamboyant — new hotels is this independent 57-room entry from November 2023, designed by illustrious Swedish interior designer Martin Brudnizki (Pendry West Hollywood, The Beekman). Its West End location makes it feel like an instant icon and its design references range from Jazz Age to disco era fabulousness with some English quirk. Among eating and drinking outlets there’s a basement-level, modern-meets–classic Italian restaurant and also a top-floor terrace bar, Flute. Broadwick Soho , 20 Broadwick Street, rooms from $757/night, via booking.com .

The BoTree : Not far from there is butler-staffed The BoTree, which opened in September 2023 with 169 vivid rooms and 30 opulent suites (think Dyson hairdryers, cocktail stations and balconies) all embodying an ethos of conscious luxury. The BoTree , 30 Marylebone Lane, rooms from $839/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Art’otel London Hoxton : Another appealing new getaway that opened in April with rooftop yoga, art workshops and aqua aerobics. Art’otel London Hoxton , 1-3 Rivington St., rooms from $391/night, via radissonhotels.com and booking.com .

Amsterdam, Netherlands: July 4, 5 and 6

Avani Museum Quarter Amsterdam : This just-opened hotel combines the best of Amsterdam — a canal-side location in the museum district — with a heavy art influence via Stedelijk Museum to create a unique and colorful atmosphere behind a brick and glass facade. A ‘60s vibe pervades the 163 guest rooms, which are equipped with yoga mats. Perhaps even more enticing: the partnership with Girls Who Magazine that has produced experiences including a street art tour and a standup paddleboard adventure down a canal with stops for pizza and craft beer plus a local swimming spot. Avani Museum Quarter Amsterdam , Hobbemakade 50, rooms from $210/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Zurich, Switzerland: July 9 and 10

Milan, Italy: July 13 and 14

Park Hyatt Milano : Fresh off a multimillion-dollar renovation, the Park Hyatt Milano debuted its refresh in late March, just in time for its 20th anniversary. Much inspiration for the chic new look came from the nearby legendary Duomo Cathedral, while Milanese architectural details are visible — from the facade to the bright, airy guest rooms. Fine dining is on offer at Pellico 3 Milano. However, the prettiest space may just be Mio Lab Cocktail Bar, where every great night should end. Park Hyatt Milano , Via Tommaso Grossi 1, rooms from $1,745/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Munich, Germany: July 27 and 28

Rosewood Munich : Before last October, Munich hadn’t seen a new luxury hotel in more than a decade, so the Rosewood opening in two Old Town landmark buildings (one a grand aristocratic residence) with interiors by Tara Bernerd & Partners was anticipated, to say the least. The gracious hotel spans 73 generous rooms, 59 suites and five exclusive houses that are sumptuous odes to the Bavarian royal family. See-and-be-seen outlets include an Alpine-esque brasserie and a bar with live music, while the Asaya Spa takes up two floors and offers integrative wellness experiences. Rosewood Munich , Kardinal-Faulhaber-Strasse 1, rooms from $869/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Vienna, Austria: August 8, 9 and 10

Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection : This May 2024 opening takes its theme and name from its building’s 19th-century origins as the Austro-Hungarian military’s equestrian school. It was later a cinema, and now it’s home to 342 bedrooms that feel contemporary and warm, along with a lush green space in the Garden Palace Harrach’s former orchards. A 4,800-plus square foot wellness area, including an indoor swimming pool, gives guests ample opportunity to relax. Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection , Ungargasse 60, rooms from $270/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .
