To do this, there are a few things you need to know and it might feel overwhelming. But don’t worry, I’ve done day trips from Malaga to Gibraltar multiple times and will share everything you need to know here.

In this guide, I’ll go through how to get there by car, public transport, or organized tour, border control, and what to do and see on a day trip to Gibraltar from Malaga to make the most out of your trip.

Get ready for impeccable views, wild monkeys (hold on to your valuables!), and Moorish remains. For being such a tiny territory (of only 4 square kilometers!) there are surprisingly many cool things to do in Gibraltar .

With only one day in Gibraltar, you won’t manage to squeeze in everything, but you’re guaranteed an unforgettable adventure from start to end. So get ready to plan an epic Gibraltar itinerary.

It’s perfectly possible to go on a day trip to Gibraltar from Malaga at any time of the year, but if you can choose the time of the year (and the weekday,) here are my recommendations.

Summer in southern Europe can get extremely hot, and Gibraltar and the Iberian Peninsula are no exceptions. If you can plan your trip from Malaga to Gibraltar outside the summer months, you’ll have a more pleasant experience than in the heat of the summer, which can reach 40 degrees celsius.

Especially the month of August is often sticky hot and with most of the Spanish taking their summer vacation, you’re guaranteed a large number of people will go for a day trip to Gibraltar during this month.

Besides the summer, weekends are usually busier than weekdays as Spaniards take advantage of their days off and you can meet a large number of people taking a Gibraltar day trip from Seville , Malaga, or Cadiz.

By the same token, it can be a good idea to keep track of the Spanish bank holidays (and remember that they move them to a Monday if they fall on the weekend.)

My favorite time of the year to visit Gibraltar is the winter and spring. That said, the autumn is just as good, I just usually find myself hiking at this time of the year.

How to go on a day trip from Malaga to Gibraltar

There are no trains from Malaga to Gibraltar, so you will have to use the bus or your own car unless you choose to go on an organized tour. Note that there are no parking options for motorhomes in Gibraltar.

I’ll go through the options here so that you can decide what works best for you.

If you plan on walking across the border, I highly recommend the Gibraltar Card which includes the bus to the city center, the cable car up to The Rock, and the Skywalk plus an entrance to all of Gibraltar’s main attractions.

Malaga to Gibraltar by car

Going on a Malaga to Gibraltar day trip by car is easy as you can travel in your own time and do stops along the way. Driving from Malaga takes between 1 hour and 40 minutes and 2 hours depending on the traffic conditions and the route you choose.

Taking the AP-7 toll road saves you a little bit of time, but will cost you. So if you’re on a budget, drive the A-7 instead, and save yourself the Euros. Note that the toll road will be considerably more expensive in the summer months than the rest of the year .

When you travel from Malaga to Gibraltar by car, you have two options. Either park at La Linea and walk across the border or drive across the border and park in Gibraltar.

I’ve always been warned against driving across the border because it is hard to find parking in Gibraltar. However, my personal experience after driving across the border various times is that I’ve always found free parking within a reasonable walking distance from attractions like The Rock.

Note that, as opposed to the UK, Gibraltar has right-hand driving, so you don’t have to worry about that.

Crossing the border by car or walking

Crossing the border with your car means you get in the queue and show your passport at the control boots. This is easy and carefree, though you might have to stand in a queue for a while so make sure you bring your favorite playlist to listen to while you wait or bring some cool games for the kids to stay occupied.

Walking across the border usually means a shorter waiting time to show your documents. Once you cross the border, you have to cross the Gibraltar Airport runway. There will be a red light if a plane is taking off or landing and a green light if you’re free to go.

The city bus no. 5 takes you to the city center or you can take the bus no. 10 straight to the cable car.

Bus from Malaga to Gibraltar

Taking the direct bus from Malaga to Gibraltar usually takes 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. Avanza buses run several times a day and the earliest departure from Malaga is at 6:45 in the morning and the latest return leaves Gibraltar at 18:30.

The easiest and most carefree way to go is by joining a full-day Gibraltar tour from Malaga with pick-up and drop-off at your hotel. There are several options including a local guide to show you around which will give you a better insight into Gibraltar and its history.

Gibraltar border control is one thing that I always get a lot of questions about, especially after Brexit. The good news is that according to Skift , Gibraltar is negotiating to enter Schengen so that passport holders from these countries don’t have to show their passport or ID card to enter Gibraltar.

However, until negotiations are settled, you can expect long queues to enter and exit Gibraltar from La Linea. Sometimes I’ve experienced 2 hours in queue with car and others, it has only taken about 20 minutes.

There are about 1600 Spanish workers crossing the border daily to Gibraltar, so it’s recommended to go after the morning rush hours to avoid waiting with them (and making the queue longer for those who have to go to work.)

Needed documents for crossing the land border between Spain and Gibraltar

If you’re an EU, Schengen, or UK resident, you need to show your EU ID card or passport to cross the border between La Linea and Gibraltar.

Some nationalities need a visa to enter Gibraltar, though if you have a Schengen visa, you might use that. You can easily check if you need a visa or not and the required entry rules for you by entering your passport nationality HERE .

As already mentioned, there’s no way you’ll manage to fit in everything there is to do with only one day in Gibraltar. Thus, I’ll list what I think are the most important attractions to visit on a day trip to maximize your Gibraltar one day itinerary.

Take the Cable Car to the top of The Rock

The cable car that goes to the top of The Rock is the perfect way to travel to the top when on a day trip from Malaga to Gibraltar as it saves you time compared to walking the steps (where, in my experience, you might be attacked by apes and have nowhere to escape.)

The cable car runs every day from 09:30 in the morning every 10-15 minutes. While the ride is only 6 minutes, you’re guaranteed spectacular views from the charming cable car wagons dating back to 1966.

See the views from The Rock of Gibraltar

The top of 426 meters high The Rock of Gibraltar offers breathtaking views of the port, the tiny peninsula, and the Spanish mainland. But if you turn around, you’ll also see Morocco on the African mainland across the Strait of Gibraltar.

On a sunny day, you’ll get a postcard-perfect image of the entire Spanish coastline behind the iconic rock. Make sure you take a picture to memorize this view for the rest of your life.

I love how Gibraltar is so small that from the top, it looks like you can hold it all in the palm of your hand. Yet there’s so much to this rocky peninsula.

Gibraltar is the only place on the European continent where you’ll see wild monkeys. Originating from Morocco, these imposing animals have become iconic to Gibraltar and one of the main tourist draws.

Malaga day trips to Gibraltar are often mainly planned because travelers want to see the monkeys, and rightly so. But keep in mind that these are wild animals, and I’ll say it again:

• Don’t feed the monkeys (actually keep all food or snacks inside a locked bag)
• Avoid touching the monkeys
• Watch your belongings
• Don’t chase the monkeys
• If the monkeys approach you, stay calm and avoid confrontation – they can bite!

Yes, I have seen monkeys steal tourists’ bags, ripping them apart, and grabbing snacks from inside them. Yes, I have seen monkeys attack tourists. And yes, I’ve seen tourists trying to feed them to get them to come close to get a selfie with them before happenings like that.

Sometimes the monkeys might jump on your shoulder because they feel like it, so don’t freak out, but keep the above in mind so you get a positive experience. Because though they’re cheeky creatures, they’re totally adorable!

On top of the Cable Car stop, there is a perfect restaurant for lunch with views of the Rock and the Spanish coastline. When visiting Gibraltar in one day, this is the best option to not waste time going into the town center looking for a place to eat.

Visit St. Michael’s Cave

After lunch, head to the spectacular St. Michael’s Cave where you’ll immerse yourself in the stalagmites and stalactites that have been built over millions of years inside the cave.

Legend says that the cave has no bottom and priorly it was believed that the cave was the mouth of an underwater tunnel across the Strait of Gibraltar reaching Morocco on the other side.

Inside the main chamber of the cave, you’ll find a massive stalagmite that has fallen off the cave ceiling, probably thousands of years ago shaking the entire Rock of Gibraltar.

Colorful lights are used to light up the inside of the caves giving it a light show spectacle.

The St. Michael’s Cave is open every day from 09:00 to 19:15, though last entry is 30 minutes before closing time.

Visit the Moorish Castle

Gibraltar’s Moorish Castle was originally built in the 1100s but was later destroyed during the Spanish re-conquest 200 years later. The tower, known as the Tower of Homage, was later rebuilt and together with the remains of the fortified walls, it towers above Gibraltar’s epic sea views.

Throughout the years, the castle has housed Dukes, protected the population against pirates, and served as a prison. today, it’s one of the most interesting historical sites in Gibraltar.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday: 09:00-19:15. The last admission is 30 minutes before closing time.

Stroll around the town center

If you have the time, round off the day with a stroll around the town center, walk down Main Street where you find several high-end British shops, and take a selfie in one of the red, British phone boots. Take a peek into old book stores, and have a coffee or a beer at any or the bars.

I highly recommend taking a guided tour with a local guide to see the main spots. A guide will also provide you with all the interesting history of Gibraltar’s old town.

Ape's Den in Upper Rock Nature Reserve, Gibraltar

The Gibraltar day tour that I went on is organised by VisitandDo.com, a reputable tour operator that runs various tours in the Malaga area.

What I love about their tour is that they have numerous pick-up points along Costa del Sol - so Malaga is not the only starting point which is super convenient. On this visit, I was based in Benalmadena so it was a no-brainer for me to select the nearest pick-up point in Benalmadena for my trip.

So if you’re looking for a Benalmadena to Gibraltar tour, this is a great option. Same goes if you’re based along Costa del Sol - just see the tour information page here and check if there’s a pick-up/drop-off point near you.

The drive from Malaga to Gibraltar typically takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and the specific starting point. The tour utilised a comfortable, air-conditioned coach, ensuring a pleasant journey. There was also a tour guide onboard who took care of us.

The route to Gibraltar wound through the various towns along the Mediterranean coast, with one toilet stop before we arrived at the Gibraltar border.

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory, so entering from Spain involves a border crossing. It's usually straightforward, but can vary in terms of waiting time, particularly during peak travel seasons.

To ensure a smooth crossing:

• Non-EU nationals must check if you need a visa to enter Gibraltar. (There was a group on my tour that were unable to enter as they needed a visa so this is an essential thing to do!)
• You'll need your passport or national ID card (for EU citizens) to enter Gibraltar.
• Be prepared for Customs checks. While these are generally quick, be ready to show your passport and answer any questions about your visit.

Once you’ve crossed into Gibraltar, the adventure really begins. The territory, while small, is densely packed with attractions, shops, and cafes. Your tour guide will inform you about the day's schedule, including meeting points and times for group activities or free exploration.

If you don’t opt for any activities, you’ll typically have about 5 hours to explore Gibraltar on your own. There are also local tour operators on the ground or you can hire a taxi to take you around. If you’re added on a tour (more on that below!) or a dolphin-watching excursion, you should have about 2 hours of free time.

A popular option when visiting Gibraltar is to do the Rock Tour. You’ll spend 1.5 hours with a local guide who’ll take the group around the territory on a mini-bus, visiting a few key attractions. It’s a fun and easy way to discover the best of Gibraltar in a short amount of time.

Wear comfortable shoes as you’ll likely do a fair amount of walking. It’s also a good idea to bring water with you to stay hydrated (especially during the summer!). Be sure to pay attention to your guide’s instructions, especially regarding meeting times and places.

Gibraltar uses the Sterling Pound, not the Euro. Most places accept credit and debit cards, so it’s not necessary to exchange your Euros. But if you need to, it’s easy to find exchanges on Main Street in Gibraltar.

In total, day tours from Malaga to Gibraltar are a full-day excursion, taking 8 to 10 hours, depending on your pick-up and drop-off points. So it is a long day with an early start, but you can relax on the bus journeys.

My Malaga to Gibraltar Tour Experience with VisitandDo.com

Gibraltar Bay

A day tour from Malaga to Gibraltar has an early start, with pick-ups beginning at 7.00am in Malaga, with staggered timings across the towns in Costa del Sol. As I was based in Benalmadena, I had a 7.55am start time at the pick-up point closest to me.

I arrived at the pick-up point about 10 minutes beforehand and there were already other travellers waiting there. Do note that many tour operators use the same pick-up points, so don’t get on the wrong bus! Be sure to check with the tour guide before you hop on any bus.

Right on schedule, the bus by VisitandDo arrived and we got into a line to check off our names with the tour guide before getting on. We each also received a free tote bag to hold any shopping we might do in Gibraltar.

Once everyone was aboard, the bus went on to pick-up other tour participants along the way. There are a fair number of stops, but each pick-up was pretty quick and efficiently handled. I enjoyed the opportunity to just relax on the bus and enjoy the scenery.

When all the guests were on board and we were less than an hour away from arriving in Gibraltar, Susanna, our tour guide, introduced herself and the driver and gave a quick rundown of the day’s schedule.

She also shared historical information about Gibraltar, setting the scene for our arrival and time in the British territory.

For those who had only purchased the “Visit Only” option, there was a last-minute opportunity to sign up for either the Rock Tour or the dolphin-watching excursion as there were still vacancies on the activities. From my pick-up in Benalmadena to arrival at the Gibraltar border, the journey took about 2.5 hours.

Soon enough, we arrived at the border crossing and Susanna provided clear instructions about what to do and where everyone would regroup after going through immigration. Susanna would stay at the back of the group, just in case anyone had any issues getting through.

If you’re an EU national, you can zoom through the crossing using the automated gates. For the rest of us, there’s a separate line that moves pretty quickly. And as you cross into Gibraltar, there’s another UK officer who’ll look at your passport/ID.

It was all pretty quick and efficient, but during peak periods, this process can take longer.

As instructed, the group waited in an area just after the crossing and once Susana came through, she led us back to the bus where our Gibraltar adventure would begin. During the short journey from the immigration to the Main Street area, Susana gave us the key timings that everyone had to mind; most importantly, that the bus would depart from Gibraltar at 4.00pm sharp.

As I had already signed up for the Rock Tour, my time in Gibraltar would begin with the tour which is about 1.5 hours long and then I’d be able to enjoy some free time before we had to return to Costa del Sol.

For those who were going dolphin watching, they had about an hour of free time before having to reconvene for the excursion. Then afterwards, they’d also have some free time before getting back on the bus.

Some tour participants had not signed up for any of the activities and so, their time in Gibraltar was fully in their hands. Susanna provided some general information about what to do and advice on how to spend the day. But, if you decide on this option, I think it’s best to do your own research beforehand and create your own plan to avoid the stress of just winging it.

I really appreciated having the different options available as each traveller can pick the type of tour that most suits them. For me, I opted for the Rock tour as it covers many of Gibraltar’s highlights without me having to plan anything. It was nice to just sit back and enjoy the day, instead of worrying about logistics!

In total, we had about 5 hours to spend in Gibraltar.

The 1.5 Hour Rock Tour in Gibraltar

After arriving in the coach parking lot in Gibraltar and having a toilet break, the small group of us that were doing the Rock Tour were gathered together and Susana handed us off to our local guide, Louie, and the mini-bus that would take us around the territory.

Born and bred in Gibraltar, Louie was fun and personable which made the tour feel like it was with a friend rather than a tour guide. He shared information about Gibraltar’s history and architecture and also some unique insights of Gibraltar as a military base as he used to serve in the military himself.

As we travelled through the narrow streets of Gibraltar, Louie would point out historical buildings and share interesting facts.

Europa Point, Gibraltar

The first stop on our Rock Tour was Europa Point , one of Gibraltar's most breathtaking and historically rich experiences.

As the southernmost point of Gibraltar, it provides unparalleled views of the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and on clear days, the coast of Africa is visibly striking, presenting a tangible connection between two continents.

The panoramic vistas from Europa Point are simply unmatched. The area offers several viewing platforms where you can take in the majestic scenery. The meeting of two mighty bodies of water, coupled with the view of Africa’s Rif Mountains, creates a spectacle that is both humbling and awe-inspiring.

Dominating the landscape of Europa Point is the Europa Point Lighthouse.The lighthouse, with its iconic design, has been a symbol of guidance and safety for mariners since its inception in the early 19th century.

Europa Point is also home to a diverse array of religious and cultural monuments, reflecting Gibraltar's multicultural heritage. Notably, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe, a place of pilgrimage and worship that dates back to the Middle Ages, embodies the spiritual significance of the area.

Additionally, the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, a gift from King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, stands as a testament to the Islamic heritage of the region. These sites, along with the Hindu Temple and the Roman Catholic chapel, highlight the peaceful coexistence of diverse faiths in Gibraltar.

We only had 15 minutes here; I wished we had more time! There was just enough time to take in the views, snap a few photos, and marvel at the Rock of Gibraltar and the lighthouse. Sadly, it was a cloudy day so the views to Africa were obscured.

After that quick stop in Europa Point, we hopped back into the mini-bus as Louie took us further up the cliff and into the Upper Rock Nature Reserve to our next stop: the magical St Michael’s Cave .

As we got off the mini-bus, Louie handed us each an entry wristband which is actually the entry ticket for the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and all its attractions (this ticket is included in the Rock Tour). So, for anyone interested, you can still visit the other attractions after the tour with that same ticket.

A site of natural beauty, historical mystery, and cultural significance, St. Michael's Cave is a network of limestone caves deep within the Rock of Gibraltar. Its vast chambers and intricate formations draw visitors from around the world, making it a must-see destination on any trip to Gibraltar.

I was very excited to visit it and we had 30 minutes to explore and enjoy.

Archaeological evidence suggests that St. Michael's Cave has been known and used by humans since prehistoric times. It was long believed to be bottomless, giving rise to legends that it was a gateway to the underworld.

During World War II, the cave was prepared as an emergency hospital, although it was never used for this purpose. The network of tunnels and chambers was expanded during this time, adding to the cave's intriguing human history.

Today, the experience at St Michael’s Cave is enhanced with a light show that illuminates the natural beauty of the cave, creating an otherworldly ambiance that captivates visitors.

Multi-coloured lights are carefully positioned to highlight the intricate details of the stalactites, stalagmites, and other geological features. The play of light and shadow, coupled with the natural shapes of the cave, creates vivid images and an almost dreamlike setting that feels like stepping into another world.

The cave itself was just stunning and the light show added a fun dimension to the experience. In the Cathedral Cave, the largest chamber within St. Michael's Cave, there’s a seating area set up so that you can enjoy the light show in comfort.

Outside the cave entrance, along the street where the minibuses were parked, were Gibraltar’s most endearing attraction: its Barbary macaques.

These wild monkeys are not just a delight for visitors but also hold a unique place in Gibraltar's cultural and natural heritage, being the only wild population of monkeys in Europe.

The Barbary macaques have been residents of the Rock for hundreds of years, with many legends surrounding their presence. One popular belief is that as long as the monkeys remain on Gibraltar, the territory will remain under British control.

This legend was taken so seriously that during World War II, the British government took steps to ensure the monkey population was maintained, even amidst the pressures of wartime.

Outside St Michael’s Cave, scores of curious tourists were taking photos and videos of these cute monkeys. Even I wasn’t immune to their charm!

Some people got very close to them, taking selfies next to them and such but remember: while the monkeys are accustomed to human presence, they are wild animals. Despite their generally playful and inquisitive nature, they can become aggressive if they feel threatened or if they're seeking food.

We spotted more Gibraltar monkeys on our next stop, Ape’s Den , which lived up to its name.

But aside from the monkeys, this is a fantastic place to enjoy panoramic views of the town and Gibraltar Bay from the top of the Rock.

After about 15 minutes at Ape’s Den, we were back in the mini-bus and Louie pointed out other key attractions in the area like the Great Siege Tunnels and the Moorish Castle as we headed back to town.

While the Rock Tour is listed at 1.5 hours, our tour actually took almost 2 hours, with us being back in town at about 1.30pm. Time just flew back, and it definitely didn’t feel like 2 hours at all!

If you opt for the Rock Tour on your Malaga to Gibraltar day trip, you may want to spend more time in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve as there is so much to see and do in that area and you already have an entry ticket.

What you can do is to let the tour guide know that you’d like to stay up there and you can just stay on the tour until the last stop at the Upper Rock. After that, you can walk to the attractions in the Upper Rock that you’re interested in visiting.

My suggestions would be visiting the Great Siege Tunnels and the Moorish Castle which are downhill from Ape’s Den.

And you’ll have to walk back down to town as well. If you opt to do this, be sure to factor in walking time back to town and the departure meeting point.

I certainly wished I had more time to explore the Upper Rock Nature Reserve but instead I decided to explore the town itself.

Free Time in Gibraltar

Our Rock Tour ended where it started, the coach parking lot, which is about a 10-minute walk to Main Street.

The first order of business for me: lunch! And when in Gibraltar, what else should one have for lunch but fish and chips? Roy’s is the popular fish and chips place in town but I ended up walking in the opposite direction from it. So instead, I picked a local English pub (recommended by our guide Louie) for lunch.

After fuelling myself, it was time to explore Main Street.

​​Main Street in Gibraltar is the vibrant artery that runs through the heart of this unique territory. As the central hub for shopping, dining, and leisure, it offers a fascinating blend of British and Mediterranean influences, reflected in the architecture, the retail offerings, and the culinary delights available.

Walking down Main Street is like taking a step into a cosmopolitan blend of history and modernity. The street is lined with buildings that showcase Gibraltar’s rich past, from colonial-era facades to traditional Genoese and Spanish homes.

It was really interesting to observe the variety of building styles which is one of a kind.

The dining scene on Main Street is equally eclectic, offering a taste of local Gibraltarian cuisine alongside international dishes. From quaint cafes serving traditional English tea and scones to lively tapas bars echoing the flavours of Spain, there’s something to satisfy every palate.

Main Street is also a shopping paradise where you can find everything from luxury brands to locally crafted souvenirs, all duty-free, making it a haven for bargain hunters and fashionistas alike.

I managed to walk the entire length of Main Street, from Prince Edward’s Gate and the South Bastion all the way to Grand Casemates Square, just taking in the vibe of Gibraltar.

Casemates Square, situated at the northern end of Main Street, is a lovely place for a coffee break or simply to people-watch.

Known as Gibraltar's bustling entrance and one of its most iconic landmarks, this expansive, open-air square is encircled by historic buildings that tell the story of Gibraltar's rich and varied past, making it not just a popular gathering place but also a significant cultural and historical site.

Originally designed as a barracks and later used for executions during the Spanish period, today's Casemates Square has transformed into the vibrant heart of Gibraltar’s social life. The square's name itself is derived from the British-built casemates — bombproof barracks — that line one side of the square, a reminder of Gibraltar's military significance through the ages.

Now, Casemates Square is alive with the energy of cafes, bars, and restaurants that spill out onto the square, offering a diverse array of dining options (including the famous Roy’s!).

By this point, my day in Gibraltar was winding down and it was almost time to head back to the coach parking lot to get on the bus back to Costa del Sol.

This Gibraltar tour merely whetted my appetite to visit again. I found Gibraltar very intriguing and there’s still so much that I wasn’t able to see and do. That’s usually what happens on day trips, right? With limited time, you can’t do everything… but I’m glad that I managed to learn more about the history and culture in Gibraltar and see a handful of its main attractions.

I got back on our bus about 10 minutes before departure time and the bus was already half-full. I suspect that everyone else had also had a full day in Gibraltar and were ready to rest and relax their feet!

Sharply at 4.00pm, with everyone accounted for, we headed to the border crossing to re-enter Spain.

It was a similar process: we had to get off the bus with all our belongings and go through immigration. EU nationals could use the automated gates or were waved through after an immigration officer examined their ID.

For other nationalities, there was a fast-moving line where they would scan and stamp our passports once again.

Then, we were back on the bus where we could comfortably rest on our journey back to Costa del Sol. Just like the morning, the bus stopped at the various pick-up points and it took about 2 hours for me to arrive back in Benalmadena.

Overall, despite it being a long day, I had a great time on this Malaga to Gibraltar tour.

I loved the convenience of it, as I didn’t have to worry about any planning or any logistics at all. The Rock Tour is a good way to see Gibraltar’s highlights when you have limited time and having free time to explore afterwards was relaxed and lovely.

Every aspect of the tour was well-communicated, from the pre-tour communications via email and WhatsApp to how our tour guides on the day communicated to the group. Everything was handled in a smooth and professional manner.

I do wish that we had more time in Gibraltar itself but it already is a long day, so I think that in the end, it’s a nice balance and 5 hours is sufficient time to get to the essence of the territory. And well, it’ll just entice you to return again for a longer visit!

If you’re looking for a hassle-free and enjoyable way to visit Gibraltar on your Costa del Sol holiday, this is definitely one of the best options to do so.

You must hold a valid passport to enter Gibraltar, and it must be good for your stay.

With the United Kingdom no longer in the European Union, Gibraltar is no longer a part of the EU Common Customs Territory. 

This means that the amount of some goods (tobacco and alcohol) you can take into and out of Gibraltar is limited.

When returning to Spain, you should declare any duty-free goods to Spanish customs officers.

If you are from a country in the European Union, all you need to show is a valid national identity card. 

All other nationalities, including citizens of the United Kingdom, must show a valid passport. If you need a visa to enter the United Kingdom, the same applies to Gibraltar.

The best way to travel from Malaga to Gibraltar is by car, taking the AP-7 motorway. Having your own vehicle or renting one allows you to move at your own pace and gives you the ability to stop off in places like Marbella and Estepona. – Check out car for rent here .

From Malaga to Gibraltar by Bus

• Price : Either 19€ or 15€ one-way depending on what bus you take
• Schedule : From Malaga buses depart at 08:30, 11:30, 13:15, and 14:30. From La Linea buses depart for Malaga at 07:45,11:45, 12:35,16:30, and 20:00

If you want to know how to travel from Malaga to Gibraltar by public transport, the only option for getting from Malaga to Gibraltar is the bus.

There are no buses between Malaga and Gibraltar, but you can travel from Malaga to La Linea and then walk across the border. 

Spanish bus company Avanza has five buses a day from Malaga, Estación de Autobuses (Malaga Bus Station). – Check tickets here.

The first bus leaves Malaga at 08:30 and arrives in La Linea at 10:50. The last bus back to Malaga departs La Linea at 20:00 and arrives back in Malaga at 11:05. 

Tip : During the summer seats sell out fast, so be sure and book your ticket well in advance to avoid disappointment.

From Malaga to Gibraltar by Car

Driving is easily your best option given the short amount of time you would have in Gibraltar if you traveled from Malaga to Gibraltar by bus. 

Also, by driving, you can stop off in places like Marbella and  Estepona. If you do not have a car of your own, consider renting one from the car rental companies at the airport. – Check out car rentals here

From Malaga or Malaga Airport, get on the Autovía de Circunvalación de Málaga/MA-20 via the ramp in the direction of the airport, Torremolinos, Algeciras, Cadiz.  

Merge onto the AP-7 motorway and stay on the highway until exit 119. Continue on CA-34 to your destination.

Tip : Driving and finding a place to park in Gibraltar is a big hassle; plus, with the UK no longer in the EU, border checks take a long time. 

Better to park your car in the Spanish town of  La Linea de la Concepción and walk across the border. Expect a total journey time of around 1hr 30 mins.

From Malaga Airport to Gibraltar

If you want to take a bus from Malaga Airport to Gibraltar, follow the instructions above.

There is also a direct bus from the airport to La Linea, from where you can walk across the border into Gibraltar. 

There are no train to Gibraltar from Malaga Airport, too.

The buses are operated by Avanza and depart Malaga Airport at 08:35, 13:40, and 18:05.

From Malaga Airport to Gibraltar by Train

There are no trains between Malaga Airport and Gibraltar.

You can, however, take a bus from the airport to Gibraltar or the central bus station in Malaga.

From Malaga Airport to Gibraltar by Bus

• Price : 10€ or 16€ one-way, depending on which bus you take.
• Schedule : The buses are operated by Avanza and depart Malaga Airport at 08:35, 13:40, and 18:05. Buses from La Linea to Malaga Airport depart La Linea at 07:45, 11:05, and 12:35. 

Here are instructions on getting to Gibraltar from Malaga by bus:

Avanza Grupo operates a bus from Malaga Airport to La Línea de la Concepción three times daily. 

You can purchase tickets from the kiosk near the exit, pay the driver on the bus or buy them in advance here.

Tickets cost €10 – €16 one way, and the journey takes 1hr 55mins. The bus stop is located just outside the Malaga airport arrivals hall.

Taxi from Malaga Airport to Gibraltar

If you want to know how to go from Malaga to Gibraltar by taxi. Know that the taxi rank at Malaga Airport is located outside the arrivals hall.

All Malaga taxis are metered and accept payment by credit card. 

Depending on whether or not it is a weekend or holiday and what time of the day it is, you can expect to pay between 162€ to 195€ to get from Malaga Airport to Gibraltar.

During the peak summer months, you may have to wait up to an hour to get a taxi. 

A much better and less expensive option is to rent a car from Costa del Sol Airport Malaga to the Gibraltar-Spain border with car rentals services like Kiwitaxi 

Prices start from 189 $ for an economy car, and after you’ve entered Gibraltar you need a local taxi to drive you to your final destination.

How to get around Gibraltar

Despite only occupying 2.6 square miles, Gibraltar can be pretty arduous as getting too many of the attractions is an uphill slog. 

With no hop-on-hop-off-bus, you can still get around the Rock using red public buses from Casemates Square. 

With the cable car to the top of the Rock and entry to the nature reserve expensive, not to mention the long queues in Summer, the best way to see Gibraltar’s attractions is by taking a taxi tour. 

The two-hour tour, including admission to the attractions, costs £22 ($28) per person and takes you to the  Pillar of Hercules, St Michaels Cave, the top of the Rock where the apes are, and the Napoleonic tunnels.

One of the must-do things when you travel to Gibraltar for the first time is to go to the top of the Rock, and the easiest way to get there is by cable car. 

Built in 1966 by Swiss cable car manufacturer Von Roll Holding,  the cabins can hold 30 passengers and an attendant.

The journey up to the station takes six minutes, and once at the top, you have incredible views of Spain and the Rif Mountains in Africa.

Cable cars run every ten minutes throughout the day and cost 34€ ($37) for adults and 22€ ($24) for children; the ticket includes entry into the Nature Park and all the attractions at the top of the Rock.

Going on an eco-friendly Dolphin tour is a great way to see these marine aquatic mammals up close. 

The Bay of Gibraltar has two species of dolphins, the short-beaked common and striped dolphins. 

It is possible to see bottlenose dolphins migrating whales, and the endangered Loggerhead turtle during the summer.

How to Get From Malaga to Gibraltar

Gibraltar is famous for being the last remaining British colony in mainland Europe. Ceded by Spain to Great Britain in the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, the three-square-mile peninsula was an important British military base in the western Mediterranean Sea for many years.

Its strategic importance waned with the 20th century, and today Gibraltar's status draws mixed reactions. Spain wants it to be Spanish, though many Gibraltarians want to remain British. The United Nations lists Gibraltar as a Non-Self-Governing Territory.

For travelers, Gibraltar is home to the Rock of Gibraltar, cute monkeys, and some great places for cheap shopping.

Border Control: Do You Need a Passport?

Passports are required for all visitors to Gibraltar, except EU nationals with valid national identity cards. As a general rule, if you need a visa for the U.K., you will for Gibraltar, too.

Gibraltar's border controls are strict, and lines can be tediously long whether you're crossing overland from Spain or flying to Gibraltar International Airport (GIB). 

Guided Tours From Malaga

For the most trouble-free visit to Gibraltar, take a guided tour. There are several guided tours from Malaga, Spain to Gibraltar. These involve bus transport to the border, where you will be dropped off (with your guide) and accompanied into Gibraltar.

After exploring Gibraltar all day, your driver will be waiting for you. This is infinitely more convenient than having to book a bus from the Spanish side, as you can never know how long the border crossing will take.

Some guided tours are billed as "shopping tours," which can often be a no-thrills shuttle service to get you to and from Gibraltar. There are also "sightseeing tours," which usually include a tour of the Rock of Gibraltar and a visit to see monkeys.

How to Get There by Bus and Train

If you're heading from Gibraltar into Spain, Spanish buses will take you as far as La Linea de la Concepción, the town on the Spanish side of the border with Gibraltar. From there, you can walk across the border into Gibraltar. Coordinating your bus with the time-consuming border controls is logistically awkward.

The bus is run by Portillo and takes about three hours from Malaga to Gibraltar (very slow compared to a guided tour bus).

If you're traveling by train, you can go as far as Malaga, where you'll need to switch to four-wheeled transportation.

How to Get There by Car

Driving from Spain to Gibraltar is not recommended—a car can be a hassle on The Rock. Take a bus instead. But if you must drive, the 130-kilometer drive from Malaga to Gibraltar takes over one-and-a-half hours, traveling mainly on the AP-7, a toll road.

The Costa del Sol separates Gibraltar from Malaga, so you can stop along the way at beach towns, or take a detour via Ronda to see the spectacular El Tajo gorge. However, this adds quite a lot of time to your journey and would require overnight accommodation in either Ronda or Gibraltar.

Heading out on a Gibraltar day trip from Málaga or Seville is one of the most unique and interesting places you can visit from these Southern Spanish cities. A little slice of Britain located at the tip of Southern Spain, Gibraltar is a fascinating destination that makes for an excellent day trip option when visiting the Costa del Sol.

Known for its rock and its monkeys, there is enough things to do in Gibraltar to occupy a couple of days. However, it is also compact enough that you can cover quite a bit of ground in just a day.

Whether you want to visit this unique British Overseas Territory from Málaga or Seville , spending one day in Gibraltar will you a great introduction to this unique place!

Málaga to Gibraltar Day Trip

Doing a day trip to Gibraltar from Málaga is incredibly easy, as the city is located only about 130 kilometres from Málaga .

There are a few different ways you can get from Málaga to Gibraltar, however, it’s worth noting that the train is not one of them. There aren’t train connections to the Gibraltar border (referred to as La Línea de la Concepción or, simply, La Línea).

By Organised Tour

If you want to take the planning and guesswork out of your day then going by organised tour is an excellent choice for you. Generally, this will simply allow you to get picked up, taken to the highlights of Gibraltar, and dropped off back in Málaga with nothing else required of you!

If this sounds like a good choice for you and your travel style, then this full-day tour from Málaga will pick you up from the city (or another destination on the Costa del Sol) and take you around the highlights of Gibraltar.

An alternative option is this day-long tour which also includes pick-up from a number of Costa del Sol destinations along with plenty of time enjoying all of the highlights of Gibraltar.

If you want to visit Gibraltar independently but also want to rely on public transportation, then going by bus is going to be your best bet.

There are a number of direct buses that travel from Málaga to Gibraltar daily and take you directly La Línea. Then, all you need to do is walk across the border and you’re there!

Buses are operated by the Avanza company and take about 2.5 hours to reach the border – so keep this in mind when travelling. It can be a good idea to get an early start in order to beat the crowds or long queues. The good news is that the first buses do leave quite early!

If you’re travelling independently, the easiest and quickest way to get from Málaga to Gibraltar is by your own vehicle. The drive from Málaga to Gibraltar is only about 1.5 hours (on the toll road – it’s a bit longer if you go toll-free) and driving does give you a lot of flexibility. You can browse car rental options here.

If you want to avoid both cross-border fees instilled by your car hire company and parking difficulties in Gibraltar itself, we recommend parking in the Santa Barbara car park which is located right next to the border. You can then walk across the border and rely on public transport while in Gibraltar itself.

Seville to Gibraltar Day Trip

While it’s located much further away (about 200 kilometres), it is possible to go on a Gibraltar day trip from Seville. However, keep in mind that you’ll be in for quite a long travel day – especially when you consider just how active a time in Gibraltar itself can be.

The absolute easiest way to get from Seville to Gibraltar is via organised tour. There are many different tours to choose from, as well, so you’re in good hands. If you’re not keen to hire a car and still want to visit Gibraltar from Seville, then this is going to be your best option.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, then this full-day tour from Seville is a great option. It’s a long day (11 hours in total), however, it includes pick-up and drop-off in Seville along with a guided tour all over all of Gibraltar’s highlights.

To put it bluntly, planning a day trip from Seville via bus isn’t a very good idea. Buses are infrequent and take about 4 hours to reach La Línea.

With the earliest bus departing Seville at 9AM, you won’t be arriving in Gibraltar until 1PM – much too late to do most of the activities in this itinerary

Then, keep in mind, that you also need to grab a 4-hour bus back to Seville – meaning that you’ll be planning an 8-hour travel day in total.

If you want to visit Gibraltar from Seville independently, then your best bet is to go by your own car. The drive will take about 2.5 hours so you’re still looking at a 5-hour travel day, however, you’ll have much more flexibility for when you leave and how long you can spend in Gibraltar.

If you’re driving, we still recommend parking on the Spanish side of the border and walking across. Parking in Gibraltar is a bit complicated and car rental companies also like to stick high cross-border fees on hires – which apply if you’re visiting Gibraltar!

Gibraltar Border & Transport Information

Now that you’ve figured out how you plan to get to Gibraltar, let’s briefly discuss how to get into Gibraltar.

Both of the independent options I’ve recommended take you to the Spanish side of the border (Frontera La Linea). This means that you’re going to need to walk across the border before you can begin exploring Gibraltar. Thankfully, this is a very quick and painless experience.

Make sure you bring your passport because you need it to cross the border before going to Gibraltar itself. Non-EU members will be stamped in and out by Spanish authorities. Once stamped, you’ll walk through the little customs checkpoint and out into Gibraltar proper! And one of the first things you will be greeted with is a classic red telephone booth.

You have a couple of options to get from the border to our first stop – the Gibraltar Cable Car. First off, you can simply walk. It’s a flat, easy stroll that takes you across the airstrip and through the city centre. However, it is also about 30 minutes and there is quite a lot of walking in your future, anyway.

You can also opt to take the bus. Bus lines 5 & 10 leaves from the border and will take you to the cable car in just about 10 minutes. You can purchase tickets in cash (in both Euro and GBP to make things easier) from the driver.

Finally, if you purchase tickets for the cable car online in advance, it purportedly gives you access to a shuttle service that operates from the border to the cable car station.

When we visited, we saw no such shuttle service (it was a Sunday, so that may have factored into it), so we can’t vouch for the reliability of this option.

One Day in Gibraltar Itinerary

Keep in mind that if you want to do absolutely everything this city has to offer, you may be better off spending 2 days here. However, you can definitely still cover a lot of ground and see the highlights of the Rock and the city centre during just a day in Gibraltar.

The first stop on this Gibraltar itinerary is at the cable car. This is the easiest way to reach the Upper Rock Nature Reserve at the top of the rock and still get to see everything.

The cable car ride is expensive, however, it is 100% worth it and a massive time-saver when compared to hiking up the rock (that will be a gruelling few hours and won’t give you enough time to see all there is to offer in the nature reserve).

We recommend getting to the cable car as soon as it opens or, if possible, even a bit earlier. Especially in high season, it can get very popular and it’s best to avoid queuing for a long time. You can purchase tickets online in advance, but keep in mind that this may not actually shorten your waiting time much.

There are a few different price points and options for the cable car and nature reserve, however, if you’re following this route, then we recommend purchasing the option that includes a one-way trip on the cable car plus entry into the nature reserve (which, at the time of writing, is £32 per person).

There is no need to buy a return ticket as the route that this itinerary follows winds you down the rock anyway and will eventually lead to the city centre. If you want to purchase the tickets for the cable car prior to arriving, you can book a combination cable car and dolphin-watching ticket here .

The ride only takes about 5 minutes and provides lovely views of the Rock, the Mediterranean and the Gibraltar city centre below.

Keep in mind that if it is particularly windy or there is otherwise inclement weather, the cable car does not operate. If you still want to get up to the nature reserve, then you’ll need to go on a taxi tour. You will see these advertised all over the city, however, you can also book a taxi tour online in advance .

You can check the Gibraltar Cable Car Twitter account to see if it is running on the day you plan to visit.

The first stop once you reach the Top Station is the Skywalk. Only a few hundred meters from the station, this area is situated near the very top of the rock and is where you’ll likely get your first glimpse of the Barbary Macaques – the famous monkeys in Gibraltar!

Originally from North Africa, these are the only wild monkeys that are found on mainland Europe and have been on the rock longer than the British have been settled in Gibraltar. En route to the Skywalk, you will pass one of the feeding stations for the monkeys where they all like to congregate.

The Skywalk itself provides excellent views of the Rock and of the city below. If you’d like, you can also walk a bit further up the Douglass Path to get even more incredible views (as far as Morocco on a clear day).

Or, you could simply stay at the Skywalk, watch the monkeys play and enjoy your surroundings before heading to your next stop.

St Michael’s Cave

The next stop is St Michael’s Cave, entry to this attraction is included in the nature reserve entry. The cave is located about 10 minutes from the Skywalk and it is a nice, paved, leisurely stroll to the cave.

The cave is fascinating and really beautiful, with fascinating rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites. There is also a light show every 7 minutes that mimics the formation of the cave itself. You only need about 10-15 minutes total to devote to the cave.

Windsor Suspension Bridge

From St Michael’s Cave, it’s just a short, downhill walk to the next attraction – the Windsor Suspension Bridge!

Set over a gorge in the rock of Gibraltar, this 70-metre-long pedestrian bridge gives excellent views and it is interesting to walk across. You can follow a pathway looking at the bridge on one side and walk across it going back.

From the bridge, you can get a panoramic view of the bay and city below.

After enjoying the suspension bridge, it’s not far of a (downhill!) walk to the next stop – the Apes Den. This is likely the last point where you can enjoy the monkeys of Gibraltar as this is yet another feeding station for the cheeky macaques.

The monkeys are great fun to observe but remember not to touch or feed them as they can get a bit aggressive if provoked. It’s also a good idea to ensure that you keep your bags closed and a good eye on them – they know how to open zippers if they suspect that you may have food!

The Great Siege Tunnels

If you’re interested in taking in a bit of history during your day, then you’re sure to love the next stop on this itinerary – the Great Siege Tunnels.

These tunnels were originally constructed during the Great Siege of Gibraltar from 1779 to 1783. In the tunnels (entry is included in your nature reserve ticket), you can see models and plenty of information regarding the history of these tunnels and how they offered shelter and protection to Gibraltarians during this time.

There was also more tunnelling and expansion to these tunnels during the Second World War when Gibraltar was under attack from Axis forces.

Moorish Castle

Gibraltar wasn’t always British and the next stop on our route (you’re almost at the bottom of the rock now, too!) is a site that predates the Brits in this city – the Moorish Castle!

This fortification was constructed in the 8th Century CE and is reminiscent of other alcázars and castles found in the region – though maybe not as grand as the Alhambra in Granada or the Real Alcázar in Seville.

You can tour the castle if it interests you and entry into the fortification is included in the nature reserve ticket.

Explore the City Centre

Not far from the castle, you will come across a staircase that will lead you down to the Gibraltar city centre. Though there are so many incredible sites in the nature reserve, it is definitely worth it to explore the highlights of the old town, as well.

This is where you will certainly feel like you’ve left Spain and are in a little Britain. In fact, aside from the palm trees and generally warm temperatures, you could feel as if you’re in any mid-sized British city centre while wandering around Gibraltar.

Make sure not to miss Casemates Square, the main square in the city and, especially since you’ve been so active, unwind with a pint in one of the many pubs you’ll find in the town.

If you’re looking for a great lunch option, we recommend heading to Monique’s , a lovely restaurant overlooking the harbour with great, continental fare.

Gibraltar Botanic Gardens

After lunch, take the time to wander around the Botanic Gardens in Gibraltar. These gardens are located at the base of the rock and include a lot of native flora for you to enjoy. They are also free to enter and are honestly incredibly tranquil – especially in comparison to the busy city centre.

The gardens are also home to the Alameda Wildlife Park and a visit to this zoo is a great option if you happen to be visiting with children.

Dolphin Tour or Europa Point

If you want to do even more to round out your time in Gibraltar then you have a couple of options. First, consider taking one of the famous dolphin tours! This 90-minute adventure will take you out on a boat to the Strait of Gibraltar where you can see a few different species of dolphin – perfect if you want to enjoy some marine life!

Another option is to head to Europa Point, the southernmost point of Gibraltar, and take in the Europa Point lighthouse. You can grab a city bus to the lighthouse as it is a bit of a trek from the city centre.

Of course, there are other things that didn’t make this itinerary that we didn’t get this when visiting Gibraltar in one day. Some of the other activities to do in the city include taking the time to take in the Pillars of Hercules monument, seeing the Jew’s Gate Cemetary and visiting some of the city’s many museums.

There is so much to do in Gibraltar in a day that you’re sure to enjoy your jam-packed day trip to this fascinating little British Overseas Territory. Filled with unique flora and fauna and boasting its own interesting history, a trip to Gibraltar is never a bad idea.
