Fragility Tour Explained

The Fragility Tour was a concert tour in support of industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile album, which took place in late 1999, running until mid-2000, and was broken into two major legs, Fragility v1.0 and Fragility v2.0 respectively. Destinations included Europe, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and North America. [1]

The tour featured increasingly large production values, including a triptych video display created by contemporary video artist Bill Viola . [2] The images displayed on the triptych focused on storm and water imagery. "I don't want to do the standard 'rock band in a hockey arena' show", said Trent Reznor. "I want to up the par a little bit. I think our stage show has had a lot of thought put into it. It's not like a Korn or Rob Zombie show where they just go into the prop cupboard and pull out as much shit as they can. I hope, when people see our shows, they go, 'Fuck, that was smarter than that Korn tour I saw, but not in a pretentious way – it kicked ass.' On our previous tour the audience was our enemy but, this time around, we're best friends with the audience at the end of shows. Everyone's connected." [3]

Rolling Stone magazine named Fragility v2.0 the best tour of 2000. [4]

The Fragility v2.0 North American leg was filmed and recorded for the live album and double DVD tour documentary And All that Could Have Been , which was released in 2002.

On May 20, 2000, Nine Inch Nails performed their 500th gig (in count) at the Lakewood Amphitheater in Atlanta. [5]

Before several of the later performances, Recoil 's 2000 album Liquid was played over the PA system.

On July 9, 2000, the rest of the tour was cancelled due to "band illness". The most notable "illness" was eight days earlier when the band went to London for a concert, and Reznor almost died from a heroin overdose, mistaking the heroin for cocaine, which he was addicted to at the time. He went into and completed rehab in 2001.

Foo Fighters deliver a rock 'n' roll masterclass in the Home Of Metal

“ It's times like these, you learn to live again …” Given how many songs they’ve got about picking yourself back up after being knocked down, it shouldn't be surprising that Foo Fighters have rallied and rebuilt after circumstances that could have derailed a lesser band. The March 2022 passing of much-loved drummer Taylor Hawkins devastated the rock world, but also left internal scars that could clearly be seen when the band hosted their celebratory tribute shows in London and Los Angeles in September that same year.

But where those shows were marked with emotional fragility, the Everything Or Nothing At All tour sees Dave Grohl's band fired up and playing as if they've got something to prove. With Josh Freese behind the kit now, the Los Angeles-based collective kick off their tour-closing show at Villa Park tackling All My Life, No Son Of Mine, Rescued and The Pretender with explosive energy, Grohl shrieking with joyous abandon that grows even more excitable as a late evening downpour causes a rainbow to form overhead during Breakout .

After the all-star performances at Wembley in September 2022, the Foos have apparently decided that not only will they fill their sets with an astonishing array of their own hits and choice cuts, but they'll also chuck an array of covers into the mix, too. No Son Of Mine is cut with cheeky snippets of Paranoid and Enter Sandman, while a crowd emergency at the start of Walk prompts Grohl to start playing Stairway To Heaven , the crowd singing the whole first verse.

The hits just keep coming, too: Times Like These regains some of the triumphant edge after its more emotional renditions in recent years, while My Hero is turned into a piano ballad/rock anthem hybrid. But the best is yet to come.

"This is the final night of our UK tour and we like to do something special for those final shows," Grohl tells the crowd. "This guy grew up a couple of streets away from here, and has never seen a show here, let alone played one... Let me introduce, Geezer Butler!"

The cheers as Black Sabbath's bassist ambles onstage are thunderous and Grohl clearly has the time of his life doing his best Ozzy Osbourne impression for the ensuing cover of Paranoid , bouncing on the microphone and generally showing himself as the dyed-in-the-wool rock'n'roll superfan he's always been.

At its heart, that sense of a shared love for rock fandom is a key to the magic of a Foo Fighters show in 2024. Balancing big hits with fan favourites and new material keeps the set feeling fresh and vibrant, more recent songs such as The Sky Is A Neighborhood and Rescued fitting in seamlessly. An acoustic trilogy of Skin And Bones , Big Me and Under You offers a brief respite from the bells-and-whistles trappings of enormodome rock, but even in their indulgences Foo Fighters remain remarkably liberated.

The main set ends with Best Of You , the melodic stadium-wide sing-along continuing long after the band leave the stage. It's testament to the night's electric atmosphere that even when the band come back on with 10-minute album cut The Teacher, Grohl's tribute to his late mother, the crowd still respond rapturously, setting up a colossal closing one-two that includes a guest appearance from Taylor Hawkins' son Shane behind the kit on This Is A Call and an utterly enthralling Everlong, the stadium lighting up as the night's closing song hits its crescendo.

Amidst such joyous scenes, it feels like the band have truly turned a corner. At this point, Foo Fighters aren't just putting on a show, they're putting on the biggest rock'n'roll celebration on the planet, a three-hour, 27-song masterclass that truly sets a standard all rock bands should aspire to.

A Moscow Free Walking Tour of the Iconic Red Square

Updated March 10th, 2020

This post might contain affiliate links. That means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, if you buy through my site. I appreciate your support of my site.

No visit to Moscow, Russia is complete unless you take a walk around the famous Red Square and see the iconic sights of the city. One of the best ways to see all the famous landmarks in Moscow and learn a little something about them too is on a free Moscow walking tour through the Red Square.

Continue reading for a sneak peek at what you will see on your free tour in Moscow and for tips on both the tour and visiting the sights. Make sure to save some time during your trip to go inside of the magnificent buildings because you will not be going in the buildings during the tour.

The State Historical Museum

Moscow State Historical Museum

The Moscow free walking tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum . You can’t miss this massive red building. The museum’s interior is almost as spectacular as the artifacts you can see within. Read my post dedicated to the museum here to find out more on what you can see and tips for visiting. Admission is free with the Moscow City Pass .

The Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin

Behind the walls of the Kremlin lie the working offices of Russian’s government and president. When visiting the Kremlin you can see the Armory Chamber, Cathedral Square, the Patriach’s Palace and many more cathedrals. You definitely want to buy tickets ahead of time so you avoid the long-lines. You can get free admission with the Moscow City Pass . It’s also worth it to take a guided tour if you don’t speak Russian so you have more of an understanding of what you are seeing.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral

If asked to conquer up an image of Moscow, St. Basil’s Cathedral might just be the most likely image you picture. The cathedral has a museum that you can visit at a later time. You can buy tickets at the ticket kiosk outside the cathedral or receive free admission with the Moscow City Pass .

Moskva River

Moskva River

Next up on the tour is the Moskva River which runs through the center of Moscow. A cruise on the Moskva River is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

GUM Shopping Mall

Who would think a mall would be one of Moscow’s most well-known attractions? GUM shopping mall across from the Kremlin makes up one of the four sides of the Red Square. The stores might be a bit too pricey for shopping, but the gorgeous interior is worth a visit. If that doesn’t convince you, the mall has some of the best ice cream! GUM is the only building you go inside during the free walking tour. There are pay bathrooms you can use while you have a few minutes of free time.

Kazan Cathedral

Moscow Kazan Cathedral

Located on the northeast corner of the Red Square, the Kazan Cathedral is another impressive dome-shaped building in Moscow that is also an active place of worship. Entering the cathedral is allowed, but remember to be respectful if people are worshipping.

Bolshoi Theater

Moscow Bolshoi Theater

Contrary to the previous buildings, the Bolshoi Theater isn’t along one of the four sides of the Red Square. Located a few minutes away, the theater is one of the best theaters in the world. Make sure to come back for a guided tour of the inside or make reservations far ahead of time to attend a ballet or opera.

Alexander Gardens

Moscow Alexander Gardens

The tour ends near the Alexander Gardens , a free public park located along the western Kremlin walls. The garden’s green lawns, sculptures and water fountains offer a nice place to take a stroll or relax a bit after some busy sightseeing.

Moscow Red Square

You can visit all these sites on your own, but the best part of doing the Moscow free tour is that you learn more information and have the potential to meet new people!

During my tour I started to talk to a woman from Malaysia and she invited me to join her and her friends for a Russian meal afterwards. It’s these little impromptu meetings and opportunities that I love most about traveling and add more to the sightseeing experience. While I was a little hesitant about going to the tour myself I told myself it would be a great opportunity to possibly meet new people. I love when things work out like that!

If you have already seen the iconic sights of the Red Square and are looking for other things to do in Moscow check out my What to Do in Moscow post that gives more off-the beaten track things to do in Moscow!

Moscow Free Walking Tour Visiting Information

Moscow Free Walking Tours

How to Get There

The Moscow Free Walking Tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum (a large red building). The website shows a map with the exact meeting point.

To get to the red square area you can take the blue 3 metro line to the Ploshchad Revolyutsii stop, or the green 2 line to the Teatralnaya station or the red 1 line to the Okhotny Ryad station. For more on how to use the metro read my Moscow Metro Guide .

Tours every day at 10:30am – 1pm in English

If you need a toilet before the start of the tour the Okhotny Ryad and GUM shopping malls are both close to the start of the tour. You will need to pay to use the toilets. There is a quick break mid-way through the tour at the GUM shopping mall where you can use the toilet if needed.

During the mid-way break in the tour you can buy some ice cream at the GUM shopping mall. There aren’t many other options or time for anything else. After the tour there are a lot of restaurants in the area. There are a couple of Varenichnaya №1 locations nearby if you would like some authentic Russian food. Their speciality is Russian dumplings. Another classic choice nearby is Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago. While you can try traditional Russian foods like borscht and Olivier Salad, you may need a reservation. GUM has several restaurants, including a couple of buffets upstairs.

Recommendations

While I would start off your visit to Moscow with a tour of the Red Square, make sure to come back to each place to tour the inside. If you are visiting several sights consider buying the Moscow City Pass  to save money on admissions.

Other Tour Options

Another company  Moscow Free Tour  does a similar free walking tour in the Red Square. Check the site for the details on the starting point and times. If you prefer a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral included check out this tour . For a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to the Kremlin included you may want to take this tour or this one . Even if you don’t typically take tours, I would recommend taking tours as much as possible in Moscow. Many people do not speak English and most information is not in English either.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Find somewhere to stay in Moscow near the Red Square so you are convenient to all the sights!

I would love to take the walking tour to get a good coverage of the area! The tip about paying for the bathrooms is great. That’s something I didn’t realize when I went to Europe for the first time from the US.

I have been to St. Petersburg but never to Moscow. I think that these kind of tours are very useful to gather many information but I second your suggestion to visit the palaces inside as they have stunning interior decor and art treasures.

Yes, I think both going on tours and getting an overview and touring the inside of places are good to do.

An art and food tour celebrating artistic and culinary creativity at SM Aura

Promote greater accessibility and appreciation for art.

Explore contemporary art and culinary creativity like never before as chef and food writer Angelo Comsti brings together a feast for the senses with "Life as we know it," an art and food walking tour at SM Aura ongoing until July 14, 2024.

1.jpg

More than a destination for shopping and dining experiences, SM Aura continues to delight by reinventing urban art spaces with initiatives to promote greater accessibility and appreciation for art.

Curated by Comsti, the art and food walking tour features seven contemporary Filipino artists: Joshua Limon Palisoc, Michael Sagaran, Vincent Diñoso, Bryant William Cuison, Belle Dinglasa, Jefre Figueras Manuel, and Archie Oclos. Located in various spaces around the mall, the works depict slices of everyday life—whether a particular moment in history, a daily chore, key society figures, or the evolution of gender identities. For a thoroughly immersive experience, five off-the-menu specialties inspired by the artworks have been created by the mall’s restaurants and cafes: Gelato by Chef Miko, Puffy’s Soufflé Pancake Café, Teakha, Lé Chon Prime, and Yardstick Coffee.

MB.jpg

Sculptor and visual artist Joshua Limon Palisoc’s "Sa Bingit ng Pagbabagong Anyo ng Diwata" portrays Diwata as a spirit of nature epitomizing courage, freedom, and a boundless capacity to transform. Made with stainless steel, LED lighting, and found objects, its oneness with nature is manifested in a half-man, half-woman body adorned with animal features like fins, wings, and horns. It holds up a Bahagharing Ahas (Rainbow Snake), a potent symbol of healing and rebirth, with the rainbow connecting worlds, differences, and genders. Enjoy a heavenly scoop of fior di latte gelato topped with colorful hundreds and thousands sprinkles and candy bits inspired by Palisoc’s work at Gelato by Chef Miko.

MB (1).jpg

Michael Sagaran’s Taal Volcano 2020 Erupting immortalizes the historic Taal Volcano eruption, which the artist witnessed firsthand. Capturing the power and beauty of nature with acrylic on canvas, Sagaran’s work is also symbolic of the cycle of life, with its seasons of challenges and triumphs. An exquisite strawberry mochi souffle pancake representing the unpredictable yet awe-inspiring majesty of a volcanic eruption, and indeed of life, has been specially created by Puffy’s Soufflé Pancake Café.

MB (2).jpg

Emotion through Motion by Vincent Diñoso is an engaging, two-sided painting on gauze that depicts the motion of the human body to evoke a sense of emotion. Utilizing layers of the delicate and translucent medium of gauze, the artist deftly explores the intricacies of human movement to capture the fleeting and multifaceted nature of human life, the interplay between joy and melancholy, strength and fragility. Lé Chon Prime deliciously captures the essence of Diñoso’s artwork with their Lechon Porchetta Bao made of fluffy white bao bun, porchetta slice, fresh vegetables, and original sauces. This innovative dish is a fusion of Filipino, French, and Chinese flavors, and just like the artwork, which is made of multi-layered gauze, the dish is also made of layers of different flavours and textures.

MB (3).jpg

Abstract artist and contractor Bryant William Cuison’s Resonance features a series of circles resembling the view through a door peephole. Each circle offers a glimpse into a different possibility, a different perspective, inviting viewers to think about the many options in their own lives, the power of choice, and to imagine what lies beyond the threshold. Teakha’s sweet and sour prawn balls with tofu takes its culinary inspiration from Cuison’s work with the contrasting flavors of sweet and sour mirroring different perspectives all in a beautiful blend of possibilities.

MB (4).jpg

Azucarera, photograph in black and white by Belle Dinglasa, features Lolo Melchor, the artist’s late grandfather, who kept a post as a maintenance worker in a sugar milling company in Talisay, Negros Occidental in the 1960s. His primary job was to make sure that the train used to transport the harvested sugarcanes, also known as tubo, into the processing plant was always in tip-top shape. The juice extracted from the sugarcanes was boiled and the residue that remained was then called muscovado sugar. Hence, Negros Occidental, where this shot was taken, is popularly known as the sugar capital of the Philippines. Yardstick Coffee’s secret menu concoction, Monochrome, is a café latte with activated charcoal capped with sea salt foam inspired by Azucarera.

The tour also invites participants to rediscover gems in SM Aura’s permanent collection by internationally acclaimed Fil-Am artist Jefre Figueras Manuel also known as “Jefre.” His ‘Contour Sculpture Series’ composed of four works at SM Aura is his first sculpture commission in the Philippines.

Jefre’s green Tarsier installation welcomes shoppers at the mall’s entrance 2, while his other sculptural installations include the endangered Philippine eagle at the mall courtyard, while the red carabao and blue rooster can be found at the mall’s Skypark and chapel garden, respectively.

MB (5).jpg

In addition to Jefre’s works are a number of murals along the mall’s Grand Staircase. One of the tour’s featured artists is Archie Oclos, whose works celebrate the country’s national treasures, iconic Filipina women Lang Dulay, the T'nalak weaving master of the T'boli cloth, and Apo Whang Od, the legendary hand tap tattoo artist of Kalinga's Last Mam-babatok.

Register for ‘Life as we know it,’ an art and food tour at SM Aura via the SM Malls Online mobile app https://click.smmallsonline.com/DFqS/ARTINAURA for a free DIY tour of the artworks and art inspired dishes.

"Rotation" is an unreleased track from 1999's The Fragile . Stated in an interview with the Nailed Podcast, Charlie Clouser believes that it is an early iteration of " The Big Come Down ", but could not say for certain.

No track of this name was on the 2017 release The Fragile: Deviations 1 , which was a compilation of instrumentals and extended or unused tracks from The Fragile sessions.

It is one of two tracks that feature in background photos from this era that remain unreleased, the other being " Stained ", which may be a working title for " Underneath It All ".
