Louis Oosthuizen What's In The Bag?

Apparel/Shoes

Louis Oosthuizen is one of South Africa's most successful golfers, winning on multiple Continents, most notably the 2010 Open Championship at St Andrews. Throughout his professional career, Oosthuizen has primarily used Ping clubs with the South African occasionally using the odd alternative. Here, we take a look at what is currently in his bag.

Louis Oosthuizen Hits His Driver

Over the last couple of years the South African seemed to be switching his driver a fair amount. At one point, he had the Ping G425 Max in his setup, and then next week, the Ping G400 went back in. What we can say though is that, at the most recent event he played in, Oosthuizen had a Ping G400 with a Project X HZRDUS Smoke Green 60 6.5 shaft.

TaylorMade SIM2, Ping G

Once again, Oosthuizen has chopped and changed the clubs in this area a number of times. Over the last year or so, he has had a Ping G425 3-wood and 5-wood, which replaced his i25 and G410 models. However the South African had a TaylorMade SIM2 in the bag along with a Ping G model in the bag of late.

Louis Oosthuizen Strikes An Iron

The irons are where we see Ping return to the bag for Oosthuizen, with the Ping Blueprint featuring in a four-iron down to pitching wedge. Again, depending on the course and conditions, the South African will bump up the set to include a three-iron.

Once again though, Oosthuizen has occasionally swapped out different makes of Ping irons. He was pictured at the start of the 2021/22 PGA Tour season with Ping i210's , irons designed to offer forgiveness, especially at the upper end of the bag. One common theme, is that the irons are fitted with True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shafts.

Ping Glide 4.0, Callaway Mack Daddy PM Grind

Ping Glide 4.0 Wedge

Oosthuizen's wedge situation also changed. He had been using three Callaway Jaws MD5 's, and then went through a phase of using Ping Glide 2.0 Stealth models. However right now it appears he has three Ping Glide 4.0 wedges with 50, 54 and 60 degrees of loft, although we believe he often puts a Callaway Mack Daddy PM Grind 60 degree model in the bag as well .

Ping PLD Voss Prototype/Ping PLD Anser 2

Louis Oosthuizen Hits A Putt

The club that has been in the South African's bag for the longest is the Ping PLD Voss Prototype, which, looking at the sweetspot, has been his choice of flatstick for a number of years. That being said he has been spotted with a newer Ping PLD Anser 2 model as well.

Looking at the specs of his usual gamer, we believe it to be a Stability Shaft Tour, with a Ping PP58 midsize full cord grip.

Titleist Pro V1

Louis Oosthuizen WITB

The most popular golf ball on the Tour has been Oosthuizen's ball of choice for many, many years now. One of, if not, the best golf ball on the market, the Titleist Pro V1 provides superb all-round performance with impressive distance in the long game, excellent control into the greens and high levels of consistency throughout with a soft feel.

Louis Oosthuizen Walks Down The Fairway

For a number of years Oosthuizen has used Izod apparel, an American brand that has been around since 1938. In the footwear department, the South African has been spotted using FootJoy shoes, wearing the Pro/SL's . Oosthuizen also has his own clothing line called Louis57, which includes shirts, branded sunglasses, caps, belt buckles and even alcohol like wine, gin and brandy.

Louis oosthuizen reportedly declines pga invite because of personal commitments.

The PGA of America unveiled on Tuesday most of the 156-player field for next week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla.

Among the commitments were each of the top 103 players in the Official World Golf Ranking. LIV Golf also boasts 16 players in the field, including world No. 644 Talor Gooch, who received an invitation.

One notable absence is Louis Oosthuizen, a LIV member and current world No. 125, who has finished first, first and second in his last three non-LIV, world-ranked starts dating to last December’s win at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Oosthuizen is also fourth in LIV’s point standings through seven starts.

According to the AP’s Doug Ferguson, Oosthuizen was offered an invitation to compete by the PGA, but he turned it down because of “personal commitments.” Ferguson added that the specifics of those commitments were unknown.

Turns out PGA offered Oosthuizen an invitation. He turned it down because of personal commitments. Not sure what those were. — Doug Ferguson (@dougferguson405) May 7, 2024

Oosthuizen owns one major victory, the 2010 Open Championship, plus six runner-up finishes in majors, including at the 2017 and 2021 PGAs. He only played two majors last year following his June 2022 signing with LIV; he withdrew from last year’s Masters and tied for 23rd at last summer’s Open Championship.

Also, Ferguson reported that Doug Ghim is currently the first alternate. Two spots in the PGA field are open for winners of this week’s two PGA Tour events, the Wells Fargo Championship and Myrtle Beach Classic, assuming they are not already exempt. With just four players in the Wells Fargo field also not currently in the PGA (Matt Kuchar, Seamus Power, Webb Simpson and Kevin Tway), Ghim’s chances of qualifying off the alternate list are good.

Louis Oosthuizen is Comfortable With Playing Less, But Still Covets One Event

  • Author: Alex Miceli

NORTH PLAINS, Ore. — Louis Oosthuizen is finishing a stretch of four weeks on the road that is culminating with his second LIV Golf event in Portland.

From London to Boston to Munich and to Portland, the 39-year-old needs a break, which he will get after the British Open at the Old Course at St. Andrews, the site of his only major win in 2010.

Oosthuizen has a career six runner-up finishes in majors, two of those coming last year at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open , which he then followed with a third in the Open Championship.

Having only one major victory on your resume may be frustrating to some, but for Oosthuizen, failure in three successive majors eventually determined his path and influenced his decision-making process in leaving the PGA Tour and joining the insurgents at LIV Golf

The losses weighed on Oosthuizen and when he returned to play in February on the PGA Tour, he was just going through the motions with no energy or interest.

In January, when his agents were contacted by LIV officials to gauge his interest in making the leap, Oosthuizen decided he was not ready.

But after a very mediocre spring with his best finish a T14 in Phoenix, Oosthuizen sat down with his wife and discussed his future.

The South African knew he was playing more golf than he was interested in playing and while he wanted to play better, he lost some of himself last year in those major defeats.

Just before the Masters , the LIV people came back to Oosthuizen, and the deal was consummated.

“I've got no plans on going back playing PGA Tour golf, so for me it was a very easy decision,” Oosthuizen said during his Wednesday practice round in Portland. “When I spoke to Jay (Monahan, PGA Tour commissioner), I told him that straight, it's nothing against the product you have, it’s just It's my time to do something else.”

That something else may be a few events in South Africa or in Asia, but no longer any on the PGA Tour or DP World Tour.

Oosthuizen played in his last event on the DP World Tour last week at the BMW International Open and then promptly resigned his membership as he had done on the PGA Tour just before teeing it up in the LIV event in London.

Before resigning, Oosthuizen talked to DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley, with the discussion from the DP World Tour side being more on Oosthuizen’s timing of his resignation as the Tour wanted it to come after the event, presumably to avoid any noise or distraction.

For Oosthuizen, he was relatively sure he was dropping his membership, but wanted to know how the fines would work. He was told that each fine would be determined on a case-by-case basis.

That lack of clarity sealed it for Oosthuizen, and his decision was cemented.

Having resigned from both the DP World and PGA Tour, the only tour Oosthuizen is a member of is the Sunshine Tour, based in South Africa.

And that is what Oosthuizen hopes will make the difference when the Presidents Cup team is determined in September.

Resigning from the PGA Tour before he played a shot in the first LIV event in London, Oosthuizen talked to International Team Captain Trevor Immelmann.

“I'm going to be honest with you, this decision is not going to be on whether I can play or not play Presidents Cup,” Oosthuizen said of the subject of the discussion. ”I'm going to do what's best for me and my family and where I am now in my career, you know that that's a decision I'm gonna make. But hopefully I can play -- I can't see why not.”

Oosthuizen’s argument is a simple one, he resigned before hitting his first shot on LIV, meaning he was not a PGA Tour member when he played in London.

But what is the difference if he resigned one week or four years ago?

Richard Sterne played in the 2013 Presidents Cup and was not a PGA Tour member, but a Sunshine Tour member as is Oosthuizen now.

When the Presidents Cup started in 1994, the PGA Tour has always had complete control of who was selected on both sides, leaving the International Team with very little autonomy.

That all changed when Ernie Els took over the reins for the 2019 cup. Els changed the culture, the logos, and the ethos of the team and after a 19-11 drubbing in 2017 at Liberty National, the 16-14 narrow loss at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia provided the Internationals with hope for Quail Hollow in September.

Now Immelman is in charge, and he is facing a depleted squad with Brandon Grace, Charl Schwartzel, Abraham Ancer and Oosthuizen potentially ineligible for the team either by points, which Oosthuizen would qualify on, or a captain’s pick.

“All the International players who went to LIV were well aware that it could jeopardize their chance to play in the Presidents Cup,” Immelman said by text on Wednesday. “With that and other things in mind they went ahead and made the decision they thought was best for them. It’ll be an interesting few months ahead.”

The PGA Tour took a similar tack when asked specifically about Oosthuizen’s status, with an official saying "at this time, he would not be eligible for Presidents Cup.”

Reading between the lines, neither Immelman, with his “could be jeopardized” and the Tour saying “at this time,” is a definitive no and seems to leave the door open.

“To me, the look of it just doesn't feel right,” Oosthuizen said of the PGA Tour's control over the Presidents Cup. “It's basically the PGA Tour picking the International side, which, you know, are they going to pick the Ryder Cup team on the Europe side?"

No matter if Oosthuizen does or does not play in Charlotte in September, he has made a four-year commitment to LIV Golf and will play the odd Sunshine Tour and Asian Tour events along with the majors he is eligible for.

After that he is not retiring, because he will play the odd event in South Africa or wherever he wants, but most of his time will be spent on his ranch just outside of Ocala, Florida.

While many players say it’s not about the money, but more about free schedule, for Oosthuizen it is about exactly that.

He’s given enough and now it’s about enjoying life, not again, but in a different way.

“I'm going back for a 10-day hunting trip with friends,” Oosthuizen said of how he is spending his first August not playing golf, instead hunting Springbok and Antelope in South Africa. “Something I haven't done; I can't remember since I was playing in Europe.”

US Open: Oosthuizen says he "doesn't understand" the fuss about LIV Golf

Louis Oosthuizen says it's a "pity" that politics has cast a shadow over LIV Golf and PGA Tour drama.

Former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen says he “doesn’t understand what everyone is on about” when asked about the topic of LIV Golf ahead of the US Open.

Related: Abraham Ancer forced out of US Open

South African Oosthuizen, 39, is the second highest-ranked player in the world who has decided to participate in the mega money LIV Golf Invitational Series which debuted at Centurion Club last week.

Oosthuizen picked up $560,000 for finishing T-10 in the first $25million event plus another $750,000 as StingerGC won the team format. It is unknown what his lucrative signing-on fee was.

The 2010 Open champion told Sky Sports that the reaction from other PGA Tour players at The Country Club at Brookline has been “fine” and that he wasn’t anticipating boos from the Boston crowd.

Phil Mickelson is playing his first major since returning to the golf world following the fallout from his comments that were published in February about working with the Saudis.

Mickelson has received a warm welcome from the crowds so far.

“I think the players know what it’s all about,” Oosthuizen told Sky Sports. [It’s] about golf and playing and it’s a pity there is just so much politics involved.”

Louis Oosthuizen believes that the PGA Tour and LIV Golf Series can coexist but says he is grateful to the PGA Tour for his career up until now pic.twitter.com/mvfnvKvhof — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) June 15, 2022

Oosthuizen was asked if he could see a future where the PGA Tour and LIV Golf can co-exist.

“I don’t see why not. I mean, I made my decision where I want to play and, you know, I’m grateful for everything that the PGA Tour did for me and meant for my career.

“I honestly don’t see what everyone is on about. At the end of the day, this is a great championship that we all work hard to be and play here and we’re going to be focussed on that this week.

“It’s just bad that something else has taken that away from this tournament.”

Oosthuizen’s comments echo that of Brooks Koepka’s, who grew frustrated with the media on Wednesday. Koepka claimed the story was putting a “black cloud” over the US Open.

“I think that sucks,” the four-time major winner said.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan recently hopped on the CBS broadcast of the RBC Canadian Open to explain his decision to ban the LIV Golf rebels.

Monahan refused to elaborate further on what he anticipates will happen next. Nor did he reveal how long the players are suspended for.

Just this week, USGA CEO Mike Whan explained that he struggled to see how LIV Golf is good for the game, hinting that they could change their qualifying criteria in the future.

A stellar amateur career included a partnership with fellow future Major winner Charl Schwartzel as part of the winning South African team at the 2001 World Junior Team Championships – the pair teamed back up in the 2011 World Cup of Golf.

Highlight of his career was lifting the Claret Jug in 2010, cruising to a seven-stroke victory at St Andrews in just his ninth Major appearance.

Completed a ‘Career Slam’ of runner-up finishes in Major Championships when he came joint second in the 2017 US PGA Championship.

Many of those near misses remain highly memorable, from his play-off defeat to Zach Johnson in the 2015 Open Championship to his final round albatross at the 2012 Masters Tournament, which ultimately ended in a losing play-off to Bubba Watson.

Claimed an emotional victory in 2019, which broke a near three year winless drought, when he won the South African Open hosted by the City of Johannesburg for his ninth DP World Tour title.

Ended a five-year wait for his tenth DP World Tour title as he finished two strokes ahead of childhood friend Schwartzel at the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek.

2024 U.S. Open picks, odds, field: Surprising predictions from proven PGA golf model that's hit 12 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the u.s. open 2024 10,000 times and revealed its surprising pga tour golf picks.

rory-mcilroy.jpg

The third major championship of the calendar year is on the horizon, with the 2024 U.S. Open beginning on Thursday, June 13 at Pinehurst Course No. 2 in North Carolina. This will be the fourth time Course No. 2 at Pinehurst has hosted the U.S. Open. Scottie Scheffler headlines the 2024 U.S. Open field, as the world No. 1 will try to win his second major championship of 2024 and the first U.S. Open title of his career. Scheffler is the betting favorite at 4-1 in the 2024 U.S. Open odds. Other top 2024 U.S. Open contenders include Rory McIlroy (9-1), Xander Schauffele (10-1), Brooks Koepka (12-1), and Jon Rahm (12-1). Defending champion Wyndham Clark is a 22-1 longshot.

Scheffler's best U.S. Open finish came in 2022, when he finished in second place. Will this be the year he gets over the hump and joins the prestigious list of U.S. Open champions? Or will a longshot like Cameron Smith, Justin Thomas, or Hideki Matsuyama prevail? Before locking in any 2024 U.S. Open picks of your own, entering PGA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing U.S. Open props and U.S. Open Pick 6 or PrizePicks entries, be sure to see the 2024 U.S. Open golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including the last three Masters and 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now with the U.S. Open 2024 approaching, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 U.S. Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 U.S. Open: Brooks Koepka (12-1), a two-time U.S. Open champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top 10. Koepka has five major championships overall but he hasn't been much of a factor in major tournaments since that last victory at the 2023 PGA Championship. In his four majors since then, his best finish is tying for 17th at last year's U.S. Open. Koepka has finished outside the top 25 in each of his last three major starts, which is one shy of tying a career-long drought.

He's finished outside the top 15 in four straight appearances at majors and has struggled overall this season. Over his last eight tournament starts, he has twice as many finishes outside the top 25 (four) as he has inside the top 10 (two). Add in that he shot over par in his lone previous start at Pinehurst No. 2, and there are much better values to utilize U.S. Open 2024 bets on.  See who else to fade here .

Another surprise: Bryson DeChambeau, a 20-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win than his long odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. DeChambeau has proven to be at the top of his game at the Masters and PGA Championship this year. The 30-year-old finished in sixth place at Augusta National, which was by far the best performance of his career at the Masters, and he finished in second place at the PGA Championship, one stroke behind Xander Schauffele.

DeChambeau won the 2020 U.S. Open and has gained notoriety for his training methods and jaw-dropping length off the tee. His playing style and length may give him a leg up on the field in what is traditionally one of the longest and most difficult events of the year.  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 U.S. Open picks

2024 U.S. Open odds, golf picks: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy predictions from model that nailed the Masters, PGA

U.s. open 2024 picks for tiger woods, rory mcilroy, brooks koepka and more 2024 u.s. open golfers.

tiger-woods-pga-golf-usatsi.jpg

The 2024 U.S. Open begins on Thursday, June 13 from Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. The third major of the year offers 22 criteria to qualify, and Tiger Woods met none of them due to his inactivity and results over the last few years. However, the 15-time major winner received a special exemption to the 2024 U.S. Open field, which he readily accepted. While it has been five years since Woods notched a top-25 in any major, he finisedh second and third in his two previous U.S. Open starts at Pinehurst No. 2.

Still, Woods is a 125-1 longshot in the 2024 U.S. Open odds, just ahead of longtime rival Phil Mickelson (150-1). Scottie Scheffler is the 4-1 favorite, with Rory McIlroy (9-1) the only other golfer with single-digit U.S. Open 2024 odds. Xander Schauffele is 10-1 coming off his first major victory, while two-time U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka is 12-1 to deploy in 2024 U.S. Open predictions. Before locking in your 2024 U.S. Open picks or entering any PGA DFS tournaments on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, be sure to  see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including three straight Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2024 U.S. Open is approaching, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising.  Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2024 U.S. Open leaderboard .

2024 U.S. Open predictions for Brooks Koepka, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy

One shocker the model is calling for at the U.S. Open 2024: Brooks Koepka (12-1), a five-time major winner and the U.S. Open champion in 2017 and 2018, struggles and barely cracks the top 10. Koepka's last major victory came at the 2023 PGA Championship, but he hasn't come close to winning another major since then. He placed outside the top 25 at both of the first two majors this year, and he's on a streak of four majors without even a top 10 finish, which ties the longest drought without a top 10 in his career.

Koepka has had lots of success in recent international tournaments but has struggled domestically. Over his last 10 starts in the United States, none have resulted in top 10 finishes, despite many of them having smaller fields where it would be easier to make a run up the leaderboard. Additionally, Koepka has played Pinehurst No. 2 once before, and he could only break par just once over his four rounds of play.  See who else to fade here .

The model has also locked in its projection for Tiger Woods (125-1), a 15-time major winner. This will be Woods' first U.S. Open start since 2020, when he shot 10-over-par and missed the cut. Since then, he's made six starts at majors, making two cuts, missing two cuts and withdrawing twice. He missed the cut in his last start at the PGA Championship, but he also noted a physical improvement in how he felt, saying, "I need to clean up my rounds but also know physically, yes, I am better than I was a month ago."

With another month having passed since that comment, Woods should, theoretically, be in an even better physical state for the U.S. Open. His past success at Pinehurst should also bring optimism with a pair of top-three finishes at the course when it hosted U.S. Opens in 1999 and 2005. It's been 10 years since Pinehurst No. 2 hosted any PGA Tour event, so much of the U.S. Open 2024 field will be competing at it for the first time. Woods' experience at the course can't be overlooked, so he'll look to lean on that rather than his recent results at majors.  See where every golfer finishes here .

On the other hand, the model has examined Rory McIlroy's (9-1) chances to win his second U.S. Open after being victorious in 2011. The Irishman was runner-up at this tournament last year, which extended his streak of top 10s at the U.S. Open to five years. He played Pinehurst at the 2014 U.S. Open and was in the top 10 entering the weekend before shooting seven-over-par over the last two rounds to finish 23rd.

McIlroy has two wins on tour this year, claiming the team event Zurich Classic and a signature tournament in the Wells Fargo Championship. However, he's been a bit of boom-or-bust as he has just two other top 10s this season to give him a total of four. With the season more than halfway over, McIlroy seemingly won't come close to the 13 top 10s he had last year. His win at the Wells Fargo is his only top 10 at a major or signature event this season, so McIlroy will look to elevate his level of play to be in contention at Pinehurst.  See the full U.S. Open projections from the model here .

How to make 2024 U.S. Open picks

The model is targeting three golfers with 2024 U.S. Open odds of 20-1 or longer who will make surprising runs. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's 2024 U.S. Open picks here .

LIV Golf comes to Houston. What's different about the tour beyond the big names?

RangeGoats, Crushers, Ripper, Fireballs, HyFlyers, Iron Heads. What do these names have to do with professional golf?

Throw in Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson and it becomes clearer.

These are a sampling of the team names and individuals in LIV Golf, which debuted in June 2022. Backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund with at least $2 billion, LIV is coming to the Golf Club of Houston in Humble this week.

This season, 54 players and 13 teams are competing in 14 regular-season events with two titles (individual, team) at stake with a total $405 million to be awarded. The individual winner receives $4 million of the $20 million at each venue and the winning team gets $3 million of the $5 million.

In addition to larger purses, LIV Golf separates itself from traditional golf tours. The format of the livelier LIV is 54 holes, no cuts, and shotgun start.

“A cool thing about LIV, your name is up there if you’re (walking) by a scoreboard and it will say what position you are in individually, but at the bottom it will (read team score),” said Reed, a resident of The Woodlands. “The missing link that you’ve had playing on another tour, some guys would kind of pack it in, focusing on the following week. Out here you are always playing for something. There’s no quit and guys are always grinding.”

The tour is in its second full season. LIV Houston is the series’ eighth tournament this year and first appearance in Texas. A global tour, this year’s international schedule includes stops in Mayakoba (Mexico), Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Andalucia (Spain) and United Kingdom.

Music is a component of LIV Golf events, welcomed by players as well as fans in an effort of attracting a younger fanbase than many other golf circuits. “Golf, but louder” is a slogan the tour embraces.

In Houston, the interactive Fan Village and Birdie Shack off the 16th green will be places fans can gravitate for entertainment and family-friendly experience. The Birdie Shack is the party hole, featuring a disc jockey

“There’s more activities out there, you got music going so you can bring your kids,” Reed said. “It’s not just hey, sit down, be quiet. You can still hold normal conversations and see the fun side (of golf).

“You can hear the music. Fans are going to show up and they’re going to be like, this is completely different and new. Once they come out and see the whole event and experience the whole week, they’re going to love it and I hope they do. We love it the way it is.”

Big-name golfers dot LIV Golf rosters. Names that even casual golf fans are familiar with. Fourteen-major champions are competing. Rahm is in his first season on tour, captaining expansion Legion XIII. Among those joining Rahm, Koepka (Smash), the first player to win four LIV Golf tournaments, DeChambeau (Crushers), Reed (4Aces), Johnson (4Aces) and Mickelson (HyFlyers) are Sergio Garcia (Fireballs), Bubba Watson (RangeGoats), Louis Oosthuizen (Stinger) and Cameron Smith (Ripper).

Talor Gooch (Smash) won the 2023 individual championship. Last year’s team champion Crushers are captained by DeChambeau. Anthony Kim is returning to the city of his last triumph. Kim won the 2010 Houston Open in a one-hole playoff over Vaughn Taylor at Golf Club of Houston. Kim is competing season long as a wild card in pursuit of full-time status after more than a decade-long hiatus in professional golf. He joins Hudson Swafford as the two wild-card players competing against LIV’s 13 four-player teams.

Each of the league’s teams have an identity. All four Rippers are comprised of South Africans. The all-Australian Ripper squad has won the past two tournaments, including their hometown event in Adelaide, where close to 100,000 people attended the three-day event.

“Having that camaraderie, that team aspect is amazing,” Reed said. “The Europeans, they play a lot of team golf growing up. For us, it was high school golf team, college, and then when you got on PGA Tour, there was Presidents Cup, Ryder Cup.

“You didn’t have all this team golf. And those were the events you looked forward to throughout the years and now having that every week is awesome. Having that team aspect is amazing.”

LIV derives its name from the Roman numeral for 54, the total number of holes played in each of its events. The unique tour has not been operating long, but rivalries are already forming.

“You look at Torque, Ripper, and the Crushers. Those are the guys you’re always trying to get after,” said Reed, part of the 4Aces that won the inaugural 2022 team championship. “The South Africans, the Stinger (Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, Dean Burmester), you don’t want to lose to the Stinger because they let you hear it every time. They’re an amazing group of guys and fun to be around, but if you lose to them you hear about it. You try to clip the Stingers as many times as you can.”

There is no shortage of banter among players and fans. It is a good, healthy, friendly exchange. Especially in golf-crazed Australia.

“Go to Australia. Now you’re going into territories, you’re playing against different territories and the crowds get behind those guys,” Reed said. “It’s absolutely insane. When you go to London you have the Majestics (Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood, Sam Horsfield) and how much the fans are getting behind them. Then you have the crowd. They will heckle each team that comes through or each player that comes through that’s not at home.

“That is something that has been missing in golf, something you see in all the other sports. You have the home teams and away teams. It brings a different dynamic, try to get it a more fun, exciting sport, than just sit there and watch guys hit golf balls.”

Entering Houston, the Crushers (105.50) lead in points, followed by Legion XIII (94) and Ripper (90), which has won each of the past two events. Joaquin Niemann (Torque) leads individually in points (134.40), ahead of Rahm (98.17), the only player who has collected a top-10 finish in all seven events, and third-place Burmester (92.24).  Niemann has finished first twice this year (Mayakoba and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) and Burmester was victorious in Miami. The other tournaments were won by Koepka (Singapore), the Fireballs’ Abraham Ancer (Hong Kong), Johnson (Las Vegas) and the HyFlyers’ Brendan Steele (Adelaide).

Another aspect of LIV is the three-day 54-hole format. When a poor start or bad round could derail golfers of a solid finish.

“If you have nine holes that you are stagnant on, or don’t play that great, basically it shoots you out of the golf tournament,” said Reed, still seeking his first individual title in LIV after winning nine times on the PGA Tour. “So, it’s more of a sprint. You have to be on top of it right out of the gate and get going.”

Reed shared 53rd at 5 under in last month’s PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. Through seven events on LIV this year, Reed is 30th in points with one top-10 finish (ninth in Miami).

“My game’s been close, it’s a lot better than it’s showing,” Reed said. “The biggest thing is, if you take care of yourself and play well and get on the podium, that helps the team. With having that team leaderboard, even if you’re not having a good week, you’re always staying in it because you don’t know what can happen toward the end to help the team. Especially now on Sundays counting all four scores. We’re all leaning on each other.”

LIV Houston is a hometown event for Reed, the 2018 Masters champion who has also resided in Spring and Clear Lake, as well as spending a good portion of time in Dallas and San Antonio. As a member of the PGA Tour, Reed played at Golf Club of Houston, site of a PGA Tour event from 2003-2019.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing that golf course how it’s supposed to be played,” Reed said.

On many occasions, the Houston stop came one week before the Masters. The course was set up to resemble conditions at Augusta National, an attempt to luring more of the big-name golfers who would be playing the following week in the PGA Tour’s first major of the season.

“In previous years when the PGA Tour would come here, they would always shave it (making greens fast) and try to change the dynamics of the golf course for Augusta prep,” Reed said. “Now, to show the beauty of that golf course and play it how it normally is with the Bermuda rough and more penalizing if you get into it compared to how it is now.

“The crowds are going to be insane. I’ve been talking to so many people in The Woodlands and they’re all pumped and excited for it. Hopefully, it’s a huge turnout and get that Texas crowd behind us and turn some heads and make some noise.”

In addition to Johnson, Reed’s 4Aces includes Pat Perez and Harold Varner III.

A shotgun start is unique in professional golf. Many recreational golfers are familiar with the concept playing in outings where all players tee off the same time on different holes. LIV Golf sets a faster pace golf tournament. Friday and Saturday’s start at the Golf Club of Houston is 12:15 p.m. Sunday’s final round starts at 12:05 p.m.

“With a shotgun start, there is no such thing as a draw,” Reed said. “Everyone is (playing) on the golf course at the exact same time. You’re not going to have guys who all of a sudden are dealing with weather in the morning and not in the afternoon, and vice versa.

“So, everyone being on the golf course at the exact same time, the guy who wins that week is the guy who is playing the best golf that week, hands down, because everyone is playing at the same time.”

Patrick Reed says fans will like the play at atmosphere of LIV golf.
